Start a Home Party Business

It’s a party at your home–or better yet, at someone else’s. Customers socialize, and you make money. Need more convincing?

Home parties now account for roughly 29 percent of the nearly $30 billion in U.S. direct sales, and 13.6 million Americans bought or sold goods from home in 2004. Direct sellers are hawking everything from organic gardening supplies to wine. Some are even hosting virtual parties online. And the numbers are growing, according to Amy Robinson of the Direct Selling Association in Washington, DC. “The majority of companies coming into [the] DSA are party plan companies,” she says. “In a lot of cases, they are smaller, newer companies started by entrepreneurs from their basements.”

Andrew Shure (below) is one of them. Nationwide, he has 1,300 consultants selling Shure Pets pet products, and he predicts he’ll have 2,800 by the end of 2007. “The only requirement at Shure Pets is a passion for pets,” says Shure, 43, who launched the Chicago-based business in 2003 and projects sales of $1 million for 2006. Another example is Newburyport, Massachusetts-based Anna William, which lets customers design their own handbags. Kristen Lee, 29, launched the million-dollar company in 2003 with Keek Bielby, 57; Rani Chase, 36; and Erin Hornyak, 33–and already has 125 consultants nationwide.

Be sure to thoroughly research any company you’re considering, and make sure you love the products. As Robinson says, “It’s no fun to sell something you’re not interested in.”

Getting Started
Hanging out at a party and selling stuff might sound like easy money. But there’s more to it than that:

  • If you’re buying into one, scrutinize the initial fee. What’s included in the startup kit? Amy Robinson of the Direct Selling Association in Washington, DC, advises, “Make sure what you’re getting in return for your money is worth it.” Look for plenty of samples, training materials and other tools that will help you host a successful party.
  • Ask whether there’s a buyback policy. Companies that are members of the DSA must agree to buy back inventory from consultants within 12 months of the date of purchase, at a minimum of 90 percent of the original net cost. That way, “if you decide it’s not for you, you can recoup most of that money, and there’s minimal risk involved,” says Robinson.
  • Make sure there’s a real product being sold. And make sure it’s not something that will leave you with a garage full of widgets. If you suspect it’s a pyramid scheme–where your time and money is devoted to recruiting and earning money off a downline, and there’s no actual product being sold or the product is worthless–keep looking.
  • Don’t feel pressured. Shady operators might try to convince you to “get in on the ground floor with this new opportunity,” notes Robinson. “But a good opportunity will be there tomorrow. You need to take your time and think about it–make sure you’re completely comfortable with it.”
  • Remember, the party is never really over. Hosting a home party isn’t just about the party, as fun as that might sound. You need to be willing not only to make the initial sale, but also to follow up, to develop relationships, to be the kind of salesperson who could sell chocolate ice cream to a woman in white gloves–and call her a few weeks later to see if she’d like some more. “This is a relationship business,” says Robinson. “It’s about service after the sale.”

However, there are times when your calendar might be a little bare due to the season or cancellations or you might not be able to do as many in home parties or demo s. There are many ways that you can build your direct sales or home party plan business outside of the home party. These ideas can be used for incremental sales every single month or to rev up your business when home parties are low.

Here are Seven Ideas to Build Your Direct Sales or Party Plan Business outside of the Home Party:

1. Host a Mystery Host Party at your house one night or afternoon! Everyone who attends and orders is entered to be the host of the party and get all the host credits and bonuses OR you could even draw for a winner of a FREE Business Kit use part of your commission from the sales to pay for the kit keep part of the host credits for yourself to gain a new recruit!

2. Set up a Stop n Shop party at your office or a local restaurant after work one day (or offer to do this for your customers, friends, hosts)!     Business banking is a company’s financial dealings with an institution that provides business loans, credit, savings and checking accounts specifically for companies and not for individuals.     Some People Have a Therapist. I Have a Business Coach.

    We all have issues. For many people, those issues tend to be related to personal goals and problems, such as relationships and the like. For me, my anxiety, focus, goals and frustrations seem to mostly be around business.

    So, while many people hire therapists, I have the business equivalent: a business coach.

    I have been working with my coach, Alan Roby. for close to six years. We meet via phone for an hour, usually twice a month. He has helped me to not only transition myself from investment banker to a media and entrepreneurial hybrid, but he is a constant source of support.

    While coaches can vary in price — from less than $100 to several hundred dollars or more per session — price shouldn t be the deciding factor. You want to find a coach who understands you and your business and that you are comfortable with, but also one that will push back on you, too. Hiring a yes man (or woman) won t produce a good return for your investment.

    Getting recommendations can be a good place to start on your search for a coach. Also do some research online and then try out a few in a complimentary or low-cost initial session (which most coaches offer) to get a feel with whom you think would be the best fit for your needs.

    Here s why I think that this type of business therapy is helpful and how you and your business can benefit from it.

    I pay to only talk about me and my business

    I m an advisor — it s the role I play in life. That role is so prevalent that for a while, my nickname was Lucy (a la The Dr. Is IN from the Peanuts cartoon). Personally and professionally, I give advice to solve other people s problems.

    This means that most of the time, I am not focused on or talking about my development.

    By paying a business coach, I get, for a full-hour at a time, to talk about and focus on nothing other than me, my problems, my opportunities, my goals and did I mention me? It forces me to schedule time to work on my own business, time that I would likely have spent helping someone else. This discipline has been invaluable in morphing my professional life and growing my business endeavors.

    Additional business knowledge

    While I do have many friends who would oblige listening to me if I asked, many don t understand business. So, their help isn t so helpful in problem solving. Having a savvy business person in my corner gives needed perspective, such as seeing the forest through the trees, so to speak, from someone whose input is relevant.

    Consistency and history

    Having a history of working together allows my coach to see patterns or to reference things and opportunities that I have mentioned in the past that I may have overlooked or even forgotten, but that could be helpful in the present and the future.

    No BS

    Because my coach is a paid advisor and not a friend, he will call me on the few occasions where I need to be called out. Friends, family and even colleagues are often hesitant to do this because they have a multi-faceted relationship with me and want to keep up the warm fuzzies in our interactions. The coaching relationship is aligned around helping me to succeed, which gives my coach more freedom to be honest and helpful.

    No judgment

    On the other side of the coin, I am also brutally honest with my coach, because I know that there is no judgment. I don t have to worry about hurting someone else s feelings or being vulnerable. Not that I am one to really be anything other than brutally honest, but I still feel like I have more liberty to deep-dive into the nitty-gritty of my moods, challenges, etc. because I know that he will help me to work through those, without having to worry about it making family dinner awkward.

    So, whether you are seeking discipline, a forum to vent or even a sanity check without judgment, I recommend that you invest in a business coach to help your business get to the next level.

It can be less risky and more affordable to purchase an existing business than to start one from scratch, but it is important that you do your homework to ensure that you buy the right business for you, and that you pay a fair price for it.

    Businesses for sale are often advertised in print media and online, but sometimes business opportunities can be misleading. Make sure to do your due diligence before you take action. Try trade publications or commercial investment magazines, or talk to a broker who specializes in a specific industry.     What kind of business should I buy?

    If you buy an existing business, you have two choices: franchise, or traditional (independent) business. There are advantages and disadvantages to both.

    • Proven track record This is an established business with a proven concept; there is less risk and less initial capital required than with starting something brand new. Similarly, when it comes time to sell, you may have an easier time finding prospective buyers for a known entity.
    • Built-in customer base People know what to expect from your business because they know the brand, and trust the product or service.
    • Setup, support and training Having a parent company means having the infrastructure and processes in place, from equipment to uniforms to corporate advertising, rather than having to develop them on your own. Other franchisees can also be a source of support.

    Before deciding to buy a business, you should evaluate its condition and potential. Think about the following things:

    • What is the physical location of the business like? Is the office, warehouse, plant or retail space in good shape? What about any equipment or inventory?
    • If it s an online business, how well-designed is the website? Is it secure? Are there any metrics to study?
    • Does the business have a good reputation? You can check online for customer reviews.
    • How visible and easily accessible is the business? Is it located in an urban or rural area? You will have to consider expenses like increased shipping costs if you are farther away from your suppliers and customers.
    • Are the products or services generating revenue? Are sales increasing, decreasing or are they flat?
    • Does the business have a good working relationship with its suppliers and bank?

    If a business is doing poorly, examine what the potential causes are. It may be a case of poor management, or inadequate resources. If you think you can turn it around and make it profitable, you could stand to gain from your investment; on the flip side, you are taking a big risk if it doesn t work out.

    If a deal seems too good to be true, chances are, it probably is. Learn how to determine what type of business you should buy.

    How is the index score calculated?

    The overall rankings are determined by the agencies Best Places to Work index scores, which measure employee satisfaction and commitment.

    The index score is not a combined average of an agency s category scores. It is calculated using a proprietary weighted formula that looks at responses to three different questions in the U.S. Office of Personnel Management s Federal Employee Viewpoint Survey. The more the question predicts intent to remain, the higher the weighting.

    Why are agencies grouped by size?

    We group agencies by workforce size to provide comparisons of agencies that may face similar management challenges in terms of numbers of employees and locations. The groupings have undergone several changes over the years. In 2003 the rankings featured only one list of agencies, including agencies as large as the Department of Defense (over 600,000 employees) and as small as the Office of Management and Budget (450 employees).

    The number of employees was determined by using OPM s FedScope database. Our criterion was based on the number of permanent employees as of fiscal year 2014, unless otherwise noted.

    Why aren t past rankings shown?

    We have different numbers of agencies participating in the rankings. For example, in 2007, 222 subcomponents participated in the rankings and the median rank was 111. In 2015, 315 subcomponents participated in the rankings and the median rank was 157. We also have made changes to the ranking s categories. For these reasons, the rank is not the most accurate reflection of an agency s performance over time. We recommend focusing on score and quartile trends instead.

    Why would an agency not have scores in some categories?

    The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, Government Accountability Office, Intelligence Community, Millennium Challenge Corporation, Office of the Inspector General at the Tennessee Valley Authority, Peace Corps, Smithsonian Institution, and U.S. Army Audit Agency do not participate in the OPM survey but conduct comparable surveys that include our three index questions. These agencies may or may not include the questions required for the category scores.

    Why would an agency not have scores for some demographics?

    To calculate a Best Places to Work index score for a demographic group at an agency, we require at least 30 respondents in the category. If there were fewer than 30, we did not report a score.

    9 Best Looking Business Websites

    There are many different types of businesses and there are also many ways to promote those businesses. A proper website is a must and an area no one should cheap-out on. No website is perfect and there are always decisions one may not agree with, however with solid designers and knowledgeable coders your website could compete with the diverse examples of great web design on this list.

    1. Pace Law

    Who would have thought a law office could have such a beautiful and trendy website? Most that I have come across are very old-school. It’s refreshing to see an industry like this have such an intriguing website. This design has a very solid theme throughout: beautiful photography, bold typography, appropriate line lengths, a flawless responsive experience, and a proper user experience that deals with a lot of written content.

    However, there are a couple things I dislike about this site. First, the contact link in the global navigation does not take you to a contact page, rather it uses the “mailto:” function which for me breaks the experience. I believe the better choice would have been a contact page with a simple form for users to fill out. Second, I dislike the slideshow at the bottom of the homepage because there are no user controls. It changes on its own and can be frustrating when you are trying to read. Overall though, this is a very nice website which should catch the eye of anyone looking for a lawyer. I know I would be interested, but that might just be the designer in me talking.

    2. Auger

    This mostly “flat” website has a great design and looks good on any device. By using solid bold colours and vector images they have the perfect recipe for a responsive site. I love photography on websites, however in the responsive world they can end up looking distorted and pixelated at certain orientations; flat colour and vectors seamlessly melt between devices.

    When you first land on the site you are presented a global navigation that sticks to the bottom of the landing area no matter how you orientate the window. When you scroll the navigation moves to the top perfectly. The services section is very well designed. There is a lot to talk about in this area and it is very well parcelled for the user. Each icon when clicked exposes important information. By hiding it behind each icon, the page is not cluttered with a thousand different facts which may overwhelm users. The user can take in what they want, when they want. They may have taken this concept a bit too far though, as I think the “a bit about us” and “Innovation and Technology” sections should be viewable without having to click. But as I said, you will never agree with someone’s design 100% of the time.

    3. Lexus

    The Lexus website is stunning. Very good photography and a proper user experience. There are some parts that are a bit too flashy for me personally, I like things to function a bit simpler but overall it’s very good. They really get customers interested in their cars. There are inspirational videos, awesome photos, and an easy to use “car builder.” The user can choose the car model and decide how they want it to look and function. They make each step in the process clear and they keep the user oriented while they are designing their vehicle. The user is clear how many steps there are and where they are in the process. I found the website to be a bit buggy on mobile devices though. This may have to do with that bulky, overly flashy mega-nav. As a whole though, this is a very nice website compared to most car companies.

    4. Bienville Capital Management

    This is a very simple design that transitions to mobile perfectly. They keep the information concise and focused. One of my favourite sayings is “a website is like a first date, it’s about making a good first impression and giving them a bit of information.” If the user is intrigued, they will contact you to find out more details. A website should not be overrun with walls and walls of text that explain every single minute detail of your company. Let them discover that information over time. Give them the important information first.

    5. Emblem

    This website is all sorts of funky and fun. Lots of eye catching imagery and bright colours to pique a user’s curiosity. I particularly liked the services section. When the user arrives at the services page they are prompted to fill out a short quiz (which they assure you is quick) to help guide you to what services will be most helpful to you. Each question is presented on its own and is a simple “Yes” or “No” answer. Once you have taken the quiz it presents you with every appropriate service you may need. If you don’t want to take the quiz, you can skip it and get right to choosing what you think you need for yourself. And guess what? It’s responsive!

    6. Tigerlilly

    This website is beautiful and clean. It is very easy to use and they do a great job at explaining what they do. A mix of iconography, screen captures, and small amounts of text give you just enough detailed information without being totally overwhelmed. I love the typefaces used, the subtle animations, the icon based sub-navigation, and the fine use of white space. It has a consistent user experience from desktop to mobile and it just looks really pretty. I would hire them.

    7. Fisker Automotive

    Great website and even greater car. Not all websites need to be responsive and mobile friendly. Sometimes it’s just about making the best possible desktop experience. This website does just that. They really bring you in and make you want this car. Awesome photography, small amounts of text information, and very cool animations to help explain how this electric vehicle is like no other. This website really seems to understand that less is more. Wonderful use of whitespace and limited text information makes you feel a sense of relief and openness. The worst feeling is when you land on a page and you become overwhelmed with information that you just can be bothered to read.

    One of my favourites in the list. I like the overall desaturated look this site has. The website reflects the products very well. Both the soaps and the website have a classy understated feel.     This site is almost the direct opposite of the Brooklyn Soap website. It is loud and proud with lots of imagery, textures, graphics, and videos. However, an extreme sport calls for this type of design. It fits perfectly. My favourite part of this website has to be the fact that no matter where you are on the site, there is a small tab below the global navigation that says “Ski Collection.” The user has access to the main product at all times, the skis. There is a lot of exciting lifestyle content to help establish the brand’s image, but they do a great job of keeping the main goal of the business in sight at all times.

    Charles Hibble never intended to make a career of repairing smartphones; he was just tired of replacing his wife s broken one.

    She dropped her iPhone and smashed it two or three times, and anothertime, it slipped out of her hands into a hot tub, he said. Hibble, who runs a real estate company in Clarks Summit, Pennsylvania, was burning through upgrades. So he figured out how to fix damaged smartphones himself.

    This started just to fix my wife s phone. Then word started to spread to friends and family members, Hibble said. It started to get so busy that we had to open a retail store. I had 50 or 60 people a month coming to me.

    And so began Hibble s unlikely journey from real estate executive to franchise company CEO. He teamed up with a friend and business partner to open the first iDropped store in a mall inScranton, Pennsylvania,in 2011. The store was so popular thatthe team opened four more, all company-owned, and then sold its first franchise. Now, Hibble is focusing on franchising,with an aggressive plan to grow the business nationwide.

    The demand has been overwhelming, said Hibble, who still serves as president of his real estate company, Weichert Realtors Hibble Associates. We re hoping to a have a few hundred locations in the next couple years.

    Hibble may have fallen into this business, but he tapped an industry with high demand. A market research report by IBISWorld released in May said cellphone repair is now a $1.4 billion industry in the United States alone. The industry has grown about 5percent in each of the last five years, yet there are still no companies with a dominant market share. This large industry is made up mostly of sole proprietors and small businesses.

    The cellphone repair industry has profoundly grown over the past five years due to several factors, including cheaper and more reliable mobile Internet and the exploding popularity of smartphones, which are more fragile and therefore more likely to need repairs, the report said. Smartphones also feature higher price tags, which have led consumers to repair [them] rather than replace them.

    However, as smartphone replacement becomes less expensive and the market becomes more saturated, demand is expected to stall somewhat, the report said.

    The cost of a repair at iDropped varies based on the type of phone and repair, Hibble said. Screen repairs, for example, cost an average of $99.99 for the iPhone 5 and $109.99 for the iPhone 5cand 5s. Hibble said prices are dropping almost monthly due to price decreases forparts. No appointment is needed for a repair, and work is guaranteed for one year.

    Hibble s smartphone repair skills were completely self-taught. He had always been technically inclined, so he researched suppliers for Apple replacement parts and taught himself how to fix them. The company has since expanded to other types of cellphones, though it specializes in Apple products, including iPads, and the Samsung Galaxy series. Hibble has personally trained all of his 20 or so full-time employees toreplace screens, dock connectors, power buttons, volume buttons and batteries just about everything but the motherboard.

    Hibble set out to make the stores lookappealing to smartphone customers. They are designed to be reminiscent of Apple stores, with clean layouts, bright lighting and no clutter.

    iDropped has worked in the retail space, in partbecause malls nationwide are looking to fill vacancies, which has kept rental rates low. The U.S. mall vacancy rate reached a 12-year high of 9.4 percent in the third quarter of 2011, according to data from research firm ReisInc. It has fallen slowly since, but progress has stalled over the last year,with the vacancy rate remaining at 7.9 percent for four straight quarters.

    To succeed in the future, Hibble said he knows the company will have to adapt to the times. New devices are being released every few months, and the company will have to keep up with the technology.

    However, iDropped can already claim one success, aside from its rapid growth: curing Hibble s wife of her clumsy fingers.

In many exercises doing process mapping there are found to be elements that were necessary for the manual process of a much smaller company that no-one has questioned because it has always been done that way.

    Processes are the backbone of a procedures manual but not always shown as a map. If you understand the processes you can support your users better by streamlining business processes and systems to mirror process.

    How do you start to map your processes?

    The human element of many processes is not well documented and processes also cross departmental boundaries so it is important that if you are going to map them you get broad representation in the mapping team from all interested parties. If you can get all the “go to” people in your organisation in one place at the same time you will get a very good snapshot of your processes. The more processes there are the longer the job will take but if it can be achieved the benefits are many.

    The process maps are also beneficial to the business continuity plan. If there is a catastrophic event the maps allow for processes to run as originally intended rather than temporary staff trying to guess how a process should work.

    Processes are hierarchical

    The top level process has a series of sub processes. If you were to follow a recipe to make a cake there will be a list of ingredients and what to do with the ingredients but there will be no mention of the process to fetch the ingredients. High level processes make assumptions and detail comes at the lowest level it needs to and in the case of the recipe it assumes the ingredients fetch process has already occurred.

    Every business has its methods for getting work done. They evolve as the businesses change and they are people led but today we need to record information along the way, to monitor whether they are working well and to accelerate them.
