Start a Home Party Business

November 17, 2006

It’s a party at your home–or better yet, at someone else’s. Customers socialize, and you make money. Need more convincing?

Home parties now account for roughly 29 percent of the nearly $30 billion in U.S. direct sales, and 13.6 million Americans bought or sold goods from home in 2004. Direct sellers are hawking everything from organic gardening supplies to wine. Some are even hosting virtual parties online. And the numbers are growing, according to Amy Robinson of the Direct Selling Association in Washington, DC. “The majority of companies coming into [the] DSA are party plan companies,” she says. “In a lot of cases, they are smaller, newer companies started by entrepreneurs from their basements.”

Andrew Shure (below) is one of them. Nationwide, he has 1,300 consultants selling Shure Pets pet products, and he predicts he’ll have 2,800 by the end of 2007. “The only requirement at Shure Pets is a passion for pets,” says Shure, 43, who launched the Chicago-based business in 2003 and projects sales of $1 million for 2006. Another example is Newburyport, Massachusetts-based Anna William, which lets customers design their own handbags. Kristen Lee, 29, launched the million-dollar company in 2003 with Keek Bielby, 57; Rani Chase, 36; and Erin Hornyak, 33–and already has 125 consultants nationwide.

Be sure to thoroughly research any company you’re considering, and make sure you love the products. As Robinson says, “It’s no fun to sell something you’re not interested in.”

Getting Started
Hanging out at a party and selling stuff might sound like easy money. But there’s more to it than that:

  • If you’re buying into one, scrutinize the initial fee. What’s included in the startup kit? Amy Robinson of the Direct Selling Association in Washington, DC, advises, “Make sure what you’re getting in return for your money is worth it.” Look for plenty of samples, training materials and other tools that will help you host a successful party.
  • Ask whether there’s a buyback policy. Companies that are members of the DSA must agree to buy back inventory from consultants within 12 months of the date of purchase, at a minimum of 90 percent of the original net cost. That way, “if you decide it’s not for you, you can recoup most of that money, and there’s minimal risk involved,” says Robinson.
  • Make sure there’s a real product being sold. And make sure it’s not something that will leave you with a garage full of widgets. If you suspect it’s a pyramid scheme–where your time and money is devoted to recruiting and earning money off a downline, and there’s no actual product being sold or the product is worthless–keep looking.
  • Don’t feel pressured. Shady operators might try to convince you to “get in on the ground floor with this new opportunity,” notes Robinson. “But a good opportunity will be there tomorrow. You need to take your time and think about it–make sure you’re completely comfortable with it.”
  • Remember, the party is never really over. Hosting a home party isn’t just about the party, as fun as that might sound. You need to be willing not only to make the initial sale, but also to follow up, to develop relationships, to be the kind of salesperson who could sell chocolate ice cream to a woman in white gloves–and call her a few weeks later to see if she’d like some more. “This is a relationship business,” says Robinson. “It’s about service after the sale.”

Secured and unsecured business loans

Finance to keep your business one step ahead

Thousands of businesses including Motor Factor have accessed affordable finance through Funding Circle. Jason Farrugia used his unsecured loan to open two more distribution outlets for his motor company in Wales.

Loans at Funding Circle

Unsecured loans allow you to borrow money for your business without giving security on any assets. like your home for example. They are a quick and easy way to get an affordable cash injection into your business.

A personal guarantee will be required, which means that you ll be required to pay back the loan if the business is unable to. We do this to protect the investors who lend to you.

If you re thinking of refurbishing your shop or buying stock for next season, your business could borrow up to 200,000 from investors through Funding Circle. It s worth noting that you ll need to have been trading for at least 2 years to apply.

Typically up to 200,000

A secured loan could help you borrow more for your business as you can use business assets as collateral. Put simply, if your business can t pay back the loan in full, the proceeds from the sale of assets can be used to pay off the remaining debt.

This type of loan could be the best option if your business needs a larger amount, as you could borrow anything from 200,000 to 1 million, or 3 million if you re developing property.

The level of security required depends on the value and purpose of the loan.

  • Typically secured against all assets of the business
  • May require a personal guarantee

Property and large assets can also be used as security.

Typically up to 1 million

We also offer a range of small business loans. including working capital, asset finance and property loans for businesses in the property sector. This includes finance for residential and commercial development, commercial mortgages and bridging loans.

If your business needs finance for something else, just tell us in your application.

Typically up to 1 million 3 million for property development

The UK Government is lending 60m to businesses through Funding Circle, alongside thousands of people and other investors.

In March 2013, the Government began lending 20 million to small UK businesses through Funding Circle, as part of its Business Finance Partnership scheme.

In early 2014, the Government-backed British Business Bank Investment Programme decided to invest a further 40 million alongside other investors, to support economic growth by providing more efficient finance to small businesses.

Seven Ideas to Build Your Direct Sales or Party Plan Business outside of the Home Party

If you are a direct sales or home party plan consultant, you know that the power of your business lies in the party. However, there are times when your calendar might be a little bare due to the season or cancellations or you might not be able to do as many in home parties or demo s. There are many ways that you can build your direct sales or home party plan business outside of the home party. These ideas can be used for incremental sales every single month or to rev up your business when home parties are low.

Here are Seven Ideas to Build Your Direct Sales or Party Plan Business outside of the Home Party:

1. Host a Mystery Host Party at your house one night or afternoon! Everyone who attends and orders is entered to be the host of the party and get all the host credits and bonuses OR you could even draw for a winner of a FREE Business Kit use part of your commission from the sales to pay for the kit keep part of the host credits for yourself to gain a new recruit!

2. Set up a Stop n Shop party at your office or a local restaurant after work one day (or offer to do this for your customers, friends, hosts)! Set up your kit, set up some games and prize drawings and let your friends stop in and see the newest products, catalog and sales fliers and shop! If you have or can sell cash carry, bring some products and offer them as bonus buys with a minimum purchase amount.

3. Mini Parties! Get 12 friends or customers to collect $150 in orders for you. Put all the orders in one party order split the host credits between those who collected and submitted orders. Depending on how your host program works, each person would be able to receive $20-$50 in free items! (You’ll make a great commission from this too!)

4. Set up an online party and share the link on Facebook, your website, networking groups, your customer email list Offer daily order specials, share product tips and gift ideas on the event. You could do a mystery host party through the online party too. (Be sure to personally invite people, don t just add them to the event and if you do this in a FB group, definitely do not add people without their permission!)

5. Hold a fundraiser for your church, school, favorite charity or family in need. If your company does not offer a Fundraising program, consider donation a portion of your commission to a worth cause.

6. Hold a special themed / seasonal sale sale! (back to school, valentines, labor day, etc…) Offer for customers to get 15% off any 1 item of their choice when they place at least a $15 order with you by a certain date OR everyone who places an order by a certain date gets entered to win a $25 surprise pack OR gets free shipping or a free gift… Get creative be excited (but don’t give away too much of your commission either you don t want to devalue your products or lose income).

7. Don t forget about vendor events look for festivals, bazaars, fundraisers, events you can set a booth up to work to get leads, meet new people and market your business. Read more about how to have Successful Vendor Events here.

The bottom line though is to Just do it ! We can do and achieve anything we put our minds to. If we want to make something happen, we will. Be excited, share the excitement and believe that you can earn all the great prizes promotions that your company offers plus a great income. Get to work! You can do this!

Same Day Approval Next Day Funding

We Are Small Business

Small business lending has been on the decline in the United States since 2007. Community Banks that once served this vital niche have been consolidated by big banks that no longer focus on the nuts and bolts of lending to small businesses.

After 3 years and over 100M in total loans, we have come to understand that business owners across the country simply needed a better way to fund their business. SnapCap was created to support growing businesses by providing credit when they need it -without the hassle. Our relationship will grow as your business grows.

Together we can achieve great things and we hope you will give us the opportunity to earn your business.

Testimonials

“We have been in business for 10 years with growth every year. We approached Ben at SnapCap and he really made the process easy. I am still amazed how professional and easy this process was. I would recommend to any business that needs funds quickly. I am looking forward to a mutual funding Partnership with SnapCap in the future.”

“We reached out to SnapCap after being turned down from our bank for a small business loan, even after proving to the bank that we has a super solid business doubling our annual revenues every year for the past four years. We needed a small influx of capitol to get us through the slow season and pay some huge insurance deposits. SnapCap came to the rescue, but not without jumping through some hoops that were to be expected.”

“This is by far the best service and performance I have received from and lending company! Professional and courteous, willing to help and move forward fast. Austin kept me up to date with the process, and the terms and deal was much better than my previous lender.”

“My loan officer went above and beyond in helping to navigate the complex process. His optimistic charm, professionalism, and dogged efforts were amazing. Some aspects of the process were a little challenging and stressful, but Franklin made it all work smoothly and was always available to help even when we were waiting to get approved. Simply put, Franklin and SnapCap are amazing!”

“We have been in business for 5 years and never had to take out a loan, but last year our landlord increased rent and removed affordable heating. We had to move our business and our large inventory and overhead put us in a bind. We researched SnapCap and found them to be professional, easy to work with, and they simply saved the day! We do recommend SnapCap if you need a loan.”

“As a small business owner looking for alternative ways to gain capital and grow, I was very skeptical on-line lending. My experience with SnapCap, and especially my loan officer, far exceeded not only my expectations, but any and all customer service I had ever experienced! The honesty, help, and follow up I experienced will make me life-long customer/partner with this company.”

“I’ve had multiple loans in the past and this is by far the best rate I have ever seen. Wonderful company to work with!”

“Had a great experience with this company. Needed a loan fast and they were able help and explained everything in a way even I could understand. I will definitely do business with them again!”

“From my initial application until the approval, everything was done in a quick and honest manner. Try it and I am sure you will be happy.”

“This company is so awesome! They offer alternative lending to people like me! There is not much emphasis on your personal credit and you don’t have to have collateral. It is just simply amazing!”

“Colin was the best loan officer I have ever spoken with regarding a loan. He was very responsive, a great listener, and his focus was on the client and their specific needs. He followed up with me on each e-mail as well as by phone. I was not expecting that kind of service. He was clear and concise which helped me through the loan process.”

“If you’ve ever want to take yourself or your small business to the next step, look to SnapCap for financial assistance. Great people to work with and the experience was way better than any meetings with banks and small business loan officers.”

“We had a boat break down during our high season. The replacement part to fix the engine was going to take 4 weeks to ship and would have hurt my bottom line. Got a loan through Snap and purchased a new boat. When the part arrives I’m going to sell the old boat and pay off the loan – happy I found these guys.”

    Business Banking

    What is ‘Business Banking’

Business banking is a company’s financial dealings with an institution that provides business loans, credit, savings and checking accounts specifically for companies and not for individuals. Business banking is also known as commercial banking and occurs when a bank, or division of a bank, only deals with businesses. A bank that deals mainly with individuals is generally called a retail bank, while a bank that deals with capital markets is known as an investment bank.

    BREAKING DOWN ‘Business Banking’

In the past, investment banks and retail/commercial banks had to be separate entities under the Glass-Steagall Act, but changes to the law made it so a single bank can deal with business banking, retail banking and investment banking. The Glass-Steagall Act is also known as the Banking Act of 1933, and was introduced to manage speculation. Parts of the act were repealed in 1999, making it no longer illegal for an investment bank to also engage in business/commercial and retail banking.

    Services Offered by Business Banks

Business banks provide a wide range of services to companies of all sizes. In addition to business checking and savings accounts, business banks offer a range of financing options and cash management solutions.

Bank Financing: Bank financing is a primary source of capital for business expansion, acquisitions and equipment purchases, or simply to meet growing operating expenses. Depending on a business’ needs, business banks can offer fixed term loans, short and long term, as well as lines of credit and asset-based loans. Banks are also a main source of equipment financing, either through fixed loans or equipment leasing. Some banks specialize in lending in certain industries, such as agriculture, construction and commercial real estate.

Cash Management: Also referred to as treasury management, cash management services help businesses achieve greater efficiency in managing the cash coming into the business, or receivables; cash going out of the business, or payables; and cash on hand, or liquidity. Utilizing the latest digital technology, business banks set up specific processes for businesses that help them streamline their cash management, resulting in lower costs and more cash on hand.

Banks provide businesses with access to Automated Clearing House (ACH) and electronic payment processing for accelerating the transfer of money in and out of the business. They also allow for the automatic movement of money from idle checking accounts into interest-bearing savings accounts, so surplus cash is put to work while the business checking account has just what it needs for the day’s payments. Businesses have access to a customized online platform that links their cash management processes to their checking and savings account for a real-time view of their cash in action.

    Some People Have a Therapist #business #plan #format

    #

Some People Have a Therapist. I Have a Business Coach.

We all have issues. For many people, those issues tend to be related to personal goals and problems, such as relationships and the like. For me, my anxiety, focus, goals and frustrations seem to mostly be around business.

So, while many people hire therapists, I have the business equivalent: a business coach.

I have been working with my coach, Alan Roby. for close to six years. We meet via phone for an hour, usually twice a month. He has helped me to not only transition myself from investment banker to a media and entrepreneurial hybrid, but he is a constant source of support.

While coaches can vary in price — from less than $100 to several hundred dollars or more per session — price shouldn t be the deciding factor. You want to find a coach who understands you and your business and that you are comfortable with, but also one that will push back on you, too. Hiring a yes man (or woman) won t produce a good return for your investment.

Getting recommendations can be a good place to start on your search for a coach. Also do some research online and then try out a few in a complimentary or low-cost initial session (which most coaches offer) to get a feel with whom you think would be the best fit for your needs.

Here s why I think that this type of business therapy is helpful and how you and your business can benefit from it.

I pay to only talk about me and my business

I m an advisor — it s the role I play in life. That role is so prevalent that for a while, my nickname was Lucy (a la The Dr. Is IN from the Peanuts cartoon). Personally and professionally, I give advice to solve other people s problems.

This means that most of the time, I am not focused on or talking about my development.

By paying a business coach, I get, for a full-hour at a time, to talk about and focus on nothing other than me, my problems, my opportunities, my goals and did I mention me? It forces me to schedule time to work on my own business, time that I would likely have spent helping someone else. This discipline has been invaluable in morphing my professional life and growing my business endeavors.

    Additional business knowledge

While I do have many friends who would oblige listening to me if I asked, many don t understand business. So, their help isn t so helpful in problem solving. Having a savvy business person in my corner gives needed perspective, such as seeing the forest through the trees, so to speak, from someone whose input is relevant.

    Consistency and history

Having a history of working together allows my coach to see patterns or to reference things and opportunities that I have mentioned in the past that I may have overlooked or even forgotten, but that could be helpful in the present and the future.

    No BS

Because my coach is a paid advisor and not a friend, he will call me on the few occasions where I need to be called out. Friends, family and even colleagues are often hesitant to do this because they have a multi-faceted relationship with me and want to keep up the warm fuzzies in our interactions. The coaching relationship is aligned around helping me to succeed, which gives my coach more freedom to be honest and helpful.

    No judgment

On the other side of the coin, I am also brutally honest with my coach, because I know that there is no judgment. I don t have to worry about hurting someone else s feelings or being vulnerable. Not that I am one to really be anything other than brutally honest, but I still feel like I have more liberty to deep-dive into the nitty-gritty of my moods, challenges, etc. because I know that he will help me to work through those, without having to worry about it making family dinner awkward.

So, whether you are seeking discipline, a forum to vent or even a sanity check without judgment, I recommend that you invest in a business coach to help your business get to the next level.

    Best Mobile Business Simulation Games

    Best Mobile Business Simulation Games

    Picture 1 of 14

The mobile gaming revolution has brought just about every gaming genre — from first person shooters to war games and empire builders — to our smartphones and tablets. But not all games are about battle and conflict, with some tapping into the constructive side of your inner gamer. Business simulations, city builders and other management games let you unleash your inner mogul. Found your own mega-corporation, build a town from the ground up, or sail the high seas in search of fortune with these 12 business and management games for your mobile device.

    Rollercoaster Tycoon 3 (iOS) ($4.99)

    Picture 2 of 14

Can’t make it to your favorite theme park for the spring break? No vacation leave banked up for the near future? Well, you can still have a bit of vicarious theme park fun with Roller Coaster Tycoon 3. an iOS game that has you in charge of a theme park, managing its attractions, designing rides and keeping your visitors happy. You can even take a virtual ride on your roller coasters and rides. Roller Coaster Tycoon 3 is a full premium game, which means no pesky timers and in-app purchases to get between you and the fun.

    Brass (Android, iOS)

    Picture 3 of 14

A mobile port of the hit eurogame, Brass (Android. iOS ) has players taking on the role of rival industrial magnates building up their many businesses, mines and factories in a newly industrializing England. Every turn, players play cards to either build or develop industries, build rail or canal connections between locations, or take on loans, jockeying for position with other players and attempting to take advantage of their own moves. The mobile version of the boardgame features a detailed tutorial, as well as numerous features to smooth gameplay. Players can engage in local or network multiplayer games with three to four players, or pit themselves against a moderately challenging AI.

    Hipster CEO (iOS) ($1.99)

    Picture 4 of 14

Hipster CEO is a tongue-in-cheek parody of the startup world that puts you in the shoes of a budding entrepreneur making your way in the world. Players start out by selecting a product (such as mobile gaming, dating apps or file sharing) as well as a target market, and then you get a small amount of seed capital and an employee, and then it’s up to you to get the ball rolling. As your startup evolves, you can hire more staff and specialists, train your personnel or spruce up the office and more, all while keeping an eye on the bottom line, while courting venture capital or holding out for buyout.

    Game Dev Story

    Picture 5 of 14

Just as it says in the title, Game Dev Story (Android. iOS ) gives players the opportunity to craft their own story as a game developer. Granted, the “story” basically involves assigning staff members to craft a video game with stats driving the results. But it’s still fairly addictive, especially if you possess some knowledge of the video game industry and its history. This inside baseball element gives the game a lot of appeal, but what keeps you playing is that eager anticipation of results: waiting to see what your staff puts out and the fulfillment of critical praise (or the disappointment of a critical drubbing).

    Transport Tycoon (Android, iOS) ($6.99)

    Picture 6 of 14

Even with the addition of a modern touch UI, this is not exactly the most attractive game on our list. However, if you give it a fair shake, Transport Tycoon (Android. iOS ) will consume whole afternoons. With a business loan you need to pay soon, you’ll start buying vehicles and setting up the infrastructure on your journey to become the emperor of land, sea and air travel. Each level is a scenario with its own transportation problems to solve, but also act as open sandboxes to indulge in. If you love the freedom to experiment and have an obsession with details, Transport Tycoon is for you.

Fiz: Brewery Management Game (Android, iOS) ($1.99)

    Picture 7 of 14

Beer aficionados will work up a mighty thirst with Fiz: Brewery Management Game (Android. iOS ). As head of your own micro-brewery, you start out with a tiny operation selling small batches to local stores. As you grow in experience and develop new brewing recipes, you can make a name for yourself in brewing competitions, discover larger markets and improve your facilities and staff. Behind the cute pixelated exterior and the monotonous chiptune is a decent stat engine that allows you to fiddle with the quality of your beer, track sales figures and feedback, and run market research in your quest to become a powerhouse brewery.

Cook, Serve, Delicious (Android, iOS) ($3.99/$4.99)

    Picture 8 of 14

A different take on the business sim genre, Cook, Serve, Delicious! (Android. iOS ) demands business savvy and nimbleness. As the manager of an up and coming restaurant in a rundown business tower, you’ll serve and prepare food, flush toilets, wash dishes and more. In between opening hours, you’ll be buying food, upgrading equipment and improving your restaurant. ‘Menu rot’ will require you to keep things fresh by rotating items in and out of the menu. And when the day starts, you’ll be swiping meat cuts, tapping ingredients and pressing down drink levers. Cook, Serve, Delicious serves up a variety of things to do to make for a business sim that’s never dull.

    Wizards Wagons (Android, iOS) ($4.99)

    Picture 9 of 14

Ancient evils have been defeated and peace has returned to the land. As the land’s resident Hero, you’re now out of a job, and the only way to make a living is to buy low and sell high. Wizards Wagons (Android. iOS ) is a tongue-in-cheek combination of trading game, tower defense and RPG as players travel through the land’s many settlements in order to buy and sell goods, upgrade their wagon and gear, and take on odd jobs and quests from the world’s many strange inhabitants. Besides the trading, players have to manage space on their wagons, as well as fend off attacks by bandits and monsters as they travel down the road to wealth.

Star Traders RPG (Android, iOS) (Free)

    Picture 10 of 14

Following in the tradition of games like Elite and Privateer, the Trese brothers’ Star Traders RPG (Android. iOS ) sees you as an interstellar merchant trying to earn a buck through honest trading or pawning the loot you win from fighting other ships. The game is nominally an RPG with its level-based accumulation of character abilities and turn-based space combat. Still, it’s the galactic economy that forms the game’s meat and potatoes. It’s a unique combination that will have you shooting and looting for a long time, despite the game ‘s lack of audio and visual polish .

A Story of A Band (Android, iOS) ($2.57/$1.99)

    Picture 11 of 14

A Story of A Band (Android. iOS ) casts you as a disgruntled musician looking to gain revenge against other bands by becoming a band manager. By imparting your rocking wisdom to young musicians, you hope to show everyone up. The game is more in depth than you’d expect. You recruit band members, choose a music style and invest a lot of time and money in improving skills and purchasing gear long before you can start being even recognized by the press. Sustaining the kind of momentum you need to get big is challenging, but battles with other bands is the most rewarding chunk of this game.

Football Manager Mobile 2016 (Android, iOS) ($8.99)

    Picture 12 of 14

As much a business sim as it is a sports game, Sega’s Football Manager Mobile 2016 (Android. iOS ) puts you in the manager’s seat rather than right on the pitch, but that doesn’t mean it’s any less challenging than any tycoon game. Players will need to carefully manage their personnel and roster, deciding on coaching styles, configure your team’s tactics, all while trying to please fans and owners, as well as keeping an eye on funding and the bottom line. A more detailed (and pricier) version, Football Manager Touch 2016 (Android. iOS ), includes a more advanced match engine, more features, and cross-platform saves between the desktop and mobile versions.

    The Westport Independent

    Picture 13 of 14

Taking inspiration from Papers Please, The Westport Independent (Android. iOS ) is both a political parable and business sim that puts you behind the editor’s desk of a newspaper carefully dancing the fine line between telling the truth, selling newspapers, and appeasing the censors of the Loyalist Party. Each week, players choose a variety of stories to feature, as well as edit their content to make it more palatable, appealing, accurate or salacious. Once you’ve set your layout, fixed your advertising, and sent it to the presses, sit back and pay attention to how your staff writers react, as well as check out the mail, propaganda, and thinly-veiled threats from censors and readers. Can you avoid being shut down by the Loyalists? And can you shape the fate of Westport with the power of the news?

At Clatterbridge Cancer Research our approach is very much long term and that suits the ethos of BNC, it’s not about hard sell and more about long term relationships and building up connections. Buying a business – Canada Business Network #government #grants #for #small #businesses

    #buying a business

    #

    Buying a business

Buying a business can take time, energy and a fair bit of research. It can be less risky and more affordable to purchase an existing business than to start one from scratch, but it is important that you do your homework to ensure that you buy the right business for you, and that you pay a fair price for it.

    On this page:

Where to find a business to buy

Businesses for sale are often advertised in print media and online, but sometimes business opportunities can be misleading. Make sure to do your due diligence before you take action. Try trade publications or commercial investment magazines, or talk to a broker who specializes in a specific industry. Networking at business events can help get the word out that you are looking to buy.

Find buyers or find a business to buy based on algorithms allowing you to find the best match based on skills and goals.

Looking to buy or sell an existing business in Ontario? Use this online marketplace to find available businesses that match your search criteria.

What kind of business should I buy?

If you buy an existing business, you have two choices: franchise, or traditional (independent) business. There are advantages and disadvantages to both.

    • Proven track record This is an established business with a proven concept; there is less risk and less initial capital required than with starting something brand new. Similarly, when it comes time to sell, you may have an easier time finding prospective buyers for a known entity.
    • Built-in customer base People know what to expect from your business because they know the brand, and trust the product or service.
    • Setup, support and training Having a parent company means having the infrastructure and processes in place, from equipment to uniforms to corporate advertising, rather than having to develop them on your own. Other franchisees can also be a source of support.
    • Set of rules and regulations to follow When you operate a franchise, you have less control over the operations than if you own an independent business; you also have to pay a percentage of your revenues to the parent company, which reduces overall earnings.
    • More control and responsibility You have the autonomy to set your own rules, but the success or failure of the business rests solely on your shoulders.
    • No fees or royalties You keep all of your earnings without sharing any of the profits.
    • More opportunity and risk You can sometimes find a business that may not be doing well but has potential. If you are willing to do the work, you may reap the rewards; you must be prepared if things don t turn out as planned.

    Evaluating a business

Before deciding to buy a business, you should evaluate its condition and potential. Think about the following things:

    • What is the physical location of the business like? Is the office, warehouse, plant or retail space in good shape? What about any equipment or inventory?
    • If it s an online business, how well-designed is the website? Is it secure? Are there any metrics to study?
    • Does the business have a good reputation? You can check online for customer reviews.
    • How visible and easily accessible is the business? Is it located in an urban or rural area? You will have to consider expenses like increased shipping costs if you are farther away from your suppliers and customers.
    • Are the products or services generating revenue? Are sales increasing, decreasing or are they flat?
    • Does the business have a good working relationship with its suppliers and bank?

If a business is doing poorly, examine what the potential causes are. It may be a case of poor management, or inadequate resources. If you think you can turn it around and make it profitable, you could stand to gain from your investment; on the flip side, you are taking a big risk if it doesn t work out.

If a deal seems too good to be true, chances are, it probably is. Learn how to determine what type of business you should buy.

Know your options when buying a business. Consider the pros and cons of each business type, situation and stage.

If you need to know the value of your business, learn about the different approaches to business valuation.

What is a fair price to pay for a business? Read this article to learn how to estimate the value of a business.

Protect yourself when buying a business. This article outlines the steps you need to take before signing on the dotted line.

Determining how much to pay for the business

As a buyer, it all comes down to knowing what you can afford before negotiations start. You should be flexible in your negotiations, but also keep your budget and the value of the business in mind.

What is the value of the business?

    • You will have to determine the value of assets such as the building, equipment and products.
    • Further factors to consider are the business financial statements, annual reports and intellectual property (for example, patents and trade-marks).
    • Other valuable assets to any business are its reputation, customer lists, and quality of personnel.

Talk to clients who buy directly from the business. It is better to find out the reputation of a business before you sign on the dotted line. Banks are more receptive to a business that has a proven track record.

Find out how to access funding for your business.

    Final considerations

    • Take your time and verify all of the information you are given before you commit yourself.
    • Buy a business in an industry you know well and with products or services you are comfortable selling.
    • Buy based on the return on investment and not only the price. You don t want to leave yourself short of funds for future expenses.
    • Investigate suppliers, clients and the reputation of the business before you buy.

If you are buying a business and its inventory and assets, learn about some of the requirements, changing ownership and GST/HST considerations.

Small Business Administration – Best Places to Work #business #development #manager

    #small business administration

    #

How is the index score calculated?

The overall rankings are determined by the agencies Best Places to Work index scores, which measure employee satisfaction and commitment.

The index score is not a combined average of an agency s category scores. It is calculated using a proprietary weighted formula that looks at responses to three different questions in the U.S. Office of Personnel Management s Federal Employee Viewpoint Survey. The more the question predicts intent to remain, the higher the weighting.

    • I recommend my organization as a good place to work. (Q. 40)
    • Considering everything, how satisfied are you with your job? (Q. 69)
    • Considering everything, how satisfied are you with your organization? (Q. 71)

Why are agencies grouped by size?

We group agencies by workforce size to provide comparisons of agencies that may face similar management challenges in terms of numbers of employees and locations. The groupings have undergone several changes over the years. In 2003 the rankings featured only one list of agencies, including agencies as large as the Department of Defense (over 600,000 employees) and as small as the Office of Management and Budget (450 employees).

Number of Full-time, Permanent Employees by Group

    Large More than 15,000 Mid-size 1,000 to 14,999 Small 100 to 999

Subcomponents, the subagencies, bureaus, divisions, centers and offices within agencies need to have at least 100 femployees.

The number of employees was determined by using OPM s FedScope database. Our criterion was based on the number of permanent employees as of fiscal year 2014, unless otherwise noted.

Why aren t past rankings shown?

We have different numbers of agencies participating in the rankings. For example, in 2007, 222 subcomponents participated in the rankings and the median rank was 111. In 2015, 315 subcomponents participated in the rankings and the median rank was 157. We also have made changes to the ranking s categories. For these reasons, the rank is not the most accurate reflection of an agency s performance over time. We recommend focusing on score and quartile trends instead.

Why would an agency not have scores in some categories?

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, Government Accountability Office, Intelligence Community, Millennium Challenge Corporation, Office of the Inspector General at the Tennessee Valley Authority, Peace Corps, Smithsonian Institution, and U.S. Army Audit Agency do not participate in the OPM survey but conduct comparable surveys that include our three index questions. These agencies may or may not include the questions required for the category scores.

Why would an agency not have scores for some demographics?

To calculate a Best Places to Work index score for a demographic group at an agency, we require at least 30 respondents in the category. If there were fewer than 30, we did not report a score.

The Best Webite Design Company in Nigeria

With today’s mad rush by every company to get a business website, it is wise to advise companies about the fact that creating a website for your business may be essentially damaging your company’s reputation.

    Why? How? You may ask

Did you know that if your business website is dormant, visitors (that is if you even have any visitors at all) may erroneously believe that your company must have become dormant as well. Maybe that is why the last update on your business’ official website is 1 and half years old. Trust me nothing could present you as being unserious with your business as this. Especially if your company is the type that requires frequent update like schools, hotels, religious organizations (like churches), etc.

For example, if you retail clothing and accessories, how do you explain to your potential customers online that the exact products displayed in your online business website 1 year ago are still the same products that are still in your store today. Don’t you think it would be safe to assume that you are no longer in business?

Or how would you expect me to believe you are still in business when I send you an email via the address on your business website and I get no response from your company after 1 month. This is very common with Nigerian company websites.

What most companies do not understand is that the internet is a very dynamic world and it is either you change and adapt or you die and get forgotten.

In conclusion, I would like to advise companies that if they must own a website for business, they must be willing to establish a department for managing their online presence or simply outsource that service to a professional web and social media management consultant.

    9 Best Looking Business Websites

There are many different types of businesses and there are also many ways to promote those businesses. A proper website is a must and an area no one should cheap-out on. No website is perfect and there are always decisions one may not agree with, however with solid designers and knowledgeable coders your website could compete with the diverse examples of great web design on this list.

    1. Pace Law

Who would have thought a law office could have such a beautiful and trendy website? Most that I have come across are very old-school. It’s refreshing to see an industry like this have such an intriguing website. This design has a very solid theme throughout: beautiful photography, bold typography, appropriate line lengths, a flawless responsive experience, and a proper user experience that deals with a lot of written content.

However, there are a couple things I dislike about this site. First, the contact link in the global navigation does not take you to a contact page, rather it uses the “mailto:” function which for me breaks the experience. I believe the better choice would have been a contact page with a simple form for users to fill out. Second, I dislike the slideshow at the bottom of the homepage because there are no user controls. It changes on its own and can be frustrating when you are trying to read. Overall though, this is a very nice website which should catch the eye of anyone looking for a lawyer. I know I would be interested, but that might just be the designer in me talking.

    2. Auger

This mostly “flat” website has a great design and looks good on any device. By using solid bold colours and vector images they have the perfect recipe for a responsive site. I love photography on websites, however in the responsive world they can end up looking distorted and pixelated at certain orientations; flat colour and vectors seamlessly melt between devices.

When you first land on the site you are presented a global navigation that sticks to the bottom of the landing area no matter how you orientate the window. When you scroll the navigation moves to the top perfectly. The services section is very well designed. There is a lot to talk about in this area and it is very well parcelled for the user. Each icon when clicked exposes important information. By hiding it behind each icon, the page is not cluttered with a thousand different facts which may overwhelm users. The user can take in what they want, when they want. They may have taken this concept a bit too far though, as I think the “a bit about us” and “Innovation and Technology” sections should be viewable without having to click. But as I said, you will never agree with someone’s design 100% of the time.

    3. Lexus

The Lexus website is stunning. Very good photography and a proper user experience. There are some parts that are a bit too flashy for me personally, I like things to function a bit simpler but overall it’s very good. They really get customers interested in their cars. There are inspirational videos, awesome photos, and an easy to use “car builder.” The user can choose the car model and decide how they want it to look and function. They make each step in the process clear and they keep the user oriented while they are designing their vehicle. The user is clear how many steps there are and where they are in the process. I found the website to be a bit buggy on mobile devices though. This may have to do with that bulky, overly flashy mega-nav. As a whole though, this is a very nice website compared to most car companies.

    4. Bienville Capital Management

This is a very simple design that transitions to mobile perfectly. They keep the information concise and focused. One of my favourite sayings is “a website is like a first date, it’s about making a good first impression and giving them a bit of information.” If the user is intrigued, they will contact you to find out more details. A website should not be overrun with walls and walls of text that explain every single minute detail of your company. Let them discover that information over time. Give them the important information first.

    5. Emblem

This website is all sorts of funky and fun. Lots of eye catching imagery and bright colours to pique a user’s curiosity. I particularly liked the services section. When the user arrives at the services page they are prompted to fill out a short quiz (which they assure you is quick) to help guide you to what services will be most helpful to you. Each question is presented on its own and is a simple “Yes” or “No” answer. Once you have taken the quiz it presents you with every appropriate service you may need. If you don’t want to take the quiz, you can skip it and get right to choosing what you think you need for yourself. And guess what? It’s responsive!

    6. Tigerlilly

This website is beautiful and clean. It is very easy to use and they do a great job at explaining what they do. A mix of iconography, screen captures, and small amounts of text give you just enough detailed information without being totally overwhelmed. I love the typefaces used, the subtle animations, the icon based sub-navigation, and the fine use of white space. It has a consistent user experience from desktop to mobile and it just looks really pretty. I would hire them.

    7. Fisker Automotive

Great website and even greater car. Not all websites need to be responsive and mobile friendly. Sometimes it’s just about making the best possible desktop experience. This website does just that. They really bring you in and make you want this car. Awesome photography, small amounts of text information, and very cool animations to help explain how this electric vehicle is like no other. This website really seems to understand that less is more. Wonderful use of whitespace and limited text information makes you feel a sense of relief and openness. The worst feeling is when you land on a page and you become overwhelmed with information that you just can be bothered to read.

    8. Brooklyn Soap Company

One of my favourites in the list. I like the overall desaturated look this site has. The website reflects the products very well. Both the soaps and the website have a classy understated feel. Nothing is flashy about this company. They make quality products and they don’t have to dazzle you with crazy graphics and animations to get you interested. Not much to say except: job well done.

    9. Moment

This site is almost the direct opposite of the Brooklyn Soap website. It is loud and proud with lots of imagery, textures, graphics, and videos. However, an extreme sport calls for this type of design. It fits perfectly. My favourite part of this website has to be the fact that no matter where you are on the site, there is a small tab below the global navigation that says “Ski Collection.” The user has access to the main product at all times, the skis. There is a lot of exciting lifestyle content to help establish the brand’s image, but they do a great job of keeping the main goal of the business in sight at all times.

Professional Business Cards To throw a spanner in to the works, let us think about the designer wants the entire card reverse created inside a solid process colour. One factor to indicate at the moment is laminated business card printing will never be created singly within the lithographic process, but created in ‘groups’ to help keep production costs low for that supplier.

Professional Business Cards Because the business card printing are created and then leave the press, they drop right into a single stack. As business card printing are put into the stack excess fat needs lower to the cards towards the bottom portion of the stack and when a lot of it has not dried completely. Anything you may hear, it’s really a fallacy that laminated cards really are a problem to create on, just grab a biro and check out it.

    Overview Business Process

A business process is a set of related tasks or activities performed to produce a product or service. Business processes exist in any type of company, independent of size or industry. Internal and cross-company processes are the nerve tracts of any given company. If they are clearly defined and also optimized on a regular basis, they will drive competitiveness in the long run. Customers must be provided with products and services before competitors can establish themselves, and the ability to respond to changing market requirements is a major factor of business success.

    A business process describes:

    • which activities are performed in the course of a process
    • which organizational units participate in process execution
    • what input and output data are used
    • what IT systems are involved, and
    • which events and risks occur during process execution

    Business process modeling

Business process modeling is the graphic representation of a company’s business processes. Process modeling aims at graphically describing the process flow and providing information on the company so that even complex processes remain transparent.

The most important method of modeling a business process is the event-driven process chain (EPC).

A simple business process may look as follows:

Figure 1: Example of a business process

Event-driven process chains are an industry standard in business process modeling. Experts can use this business-related notation for documenting and optimizing their workflows .

The free modeling tool ARIS Express supports the free modeling of business processes with its model type ‘Business model’.

The most common business process constructs such as branches or loops are provided as fragments in ARIS Express, thus enabling you to have an easy start to the world of process modeling and flow charting .

In a model of the “Business process” type, the process organization can be represented with its activity elements, data elements, and organizational elements. The sequence of activities in terms of a business process is represented in process chains. You can model the start and end events for each activity in the process. Events are both triggers of activities and results of activities.

As events define the state or condition that cause an activity to start as well as the state that defines the completion of an activity, the start and end elements of a business process are always events. An event may be the source of several simultaneous activities; on the other hand, an activity may result in several events. To represent these branches and processing loops in a business process, a rule in the form of a circle is used. However, the connections do not just act as a graphic rule, but also define the logical links of objects.

    Example business process

The following example shows a business process model that is directly embedded with the interactive model viewer. You can download it and edit it for free in ARIS Express. You can also use the video tutorials provided to find an easy way into the world of ARIS.

    Let’s start modeling business process

From here you can start to learn modeling a business process with ARIS Express. The required steps are: Download ARIS Express. check some model examples or video tutorials. start modeling, share your models and discuss them with other users, and if you haven’t joined the ARIS Community yet do it now 😉

A Few Broken Smartphones Lead to a Fix-It Franchise

iDropped retail stores fix broken smartphones and tablets for less than the cost of buying a new one. / Credit: Josiah Lewis

Charles Hibble never intended to make a career of repairing smartphones; he was just tired of replacing his wife s broken one.

She dropped her iPhone and smashed it two or three times, and anothertime, it slipped out of her hands into a hot tub, he said. Hibble, who runs a real estate company in Clarks Summit, Pennsylvania, was burning through upgrades. So he figured out how to fix damaged smartphones himself.

This started just to fix my wife s phone. Then word started to spread to friends and family members, Hibble said. It started to get so busy that we had to open a retail store. I had 50 or 60 people a month coming to me.

And so began Hibble s unlikely journey from real estate executive to franchise company CEO. He teamed up with a friend and business partner to open the first iDropped store in a mall inScranton, Pennsylvania,in 2011. The store was so popular thatthe team opened four more, all company-owned, and then sold its first franchise. Now, Hibble is focusing on franchising, with an aggressive plan to grow the business nationwide.

The demand has been overwhelming, said Hibble, who still serves as president of his real estate company, Weichert Realtors Hibble Associates. We re hoping to a have a few hundred locations in the next couple years.

Hibble may have fallen into this business, but he tapped an industry with high demand. A market research report by IBISWorld released in May said cellphone repair is now a $1.4 billion industry in the United States alone. The industry has grown about 5percent in each of the last five years, yet there are still no companies with a dominant market share. This large industry is made up mostly of sole proprietors and small businesses.

The cellphone repair industry has profoundly grown over the past five years due to several factors, including cheaper and more reliable mobile Internet and the exploding popularity of smartphones, which are more fragile and therefore more likely to need repairs, the report said. Smartphones also feature higher price tags, which have led consumers to repair [them] rather than replace them.

However, as smartphone replacement becomes less expensive and the market becomes more saturated, demand is expected to stall somewhat, the report said.

The cost of a repair at iDropped varies based on the type of phone and repair, Hibble said. Screen repairs, for example, cost an average of $99.99 for the iPhone 5 and $109.99 for the iPhone 5cand 5s. Hibble said prices are dropping almost monthly due to price decreases forparts. No appointment is needed for a repair, and work is guaranteed for one year.

Hibble s smartphone repair skills were completely self-taught. He had always been technically inclined, so he researched suppliers for Apple replacement parts and taught himself how to fix them. The company has since expanded to other types of cellphones, though it specializes in Apple products, including iPads, and the Samsung Galaxy series. Hibble has personally trained all of his 20 or so full-time employees toreplace screens, dock connectors, power buttons, volume buttons and batteries just about everything but the motherboard.

Hibble set out to make the stores lookappealing to smartphone customers. They are designed to be reminiscent of Apple stores, with clean layouts, bright lighting and no clutter.

iDropped has worked in the retail space, in partbecause malls nationwide are looking to fill vacancies, which has kept rental rates low. The U.S. mall vacancy rate reached a 12-year high of 9.4 percent in the third quarter of 2011, according to data from research firm ReisInc. It has fallen slowly since, but progress has stalled over the last year, with the vacancy rate remaining at 7.9 percent for four straight quarters.

To succeed in the future, Hibble said he knows the company will have to adapt to the times. New devices are being released every few months, and the company will have to keep up with the technology.

However, iDropped can already claim one success, aside from its rapid growth: curing Hibble s wife of her clumsy fingers.

Ever since I started this, she hasn t dropped her iPhone, he said.

Consequentially Limited IT in language you understand

    Business Processes

Business processes are a series of sequential steps that have to be followed to produce a product or service. There is a graphic notation system available BPMN to help map processes. The benefit of a process map for information flow is that it allows a visual overview of logic and the points at which data is written, amended or deleted. It allows a Change Management Board to look at proposed changes and get a clear idea of the impact of the changes. The visualisation also helps with re-engineering processes as it can highlight anomalies in the process.

It is entirely normal for a company to grow and automate their processes and this is a particularly good time to ask questions of the processes. The most important questions of a step in the sequence is does this step add value or need to be done. In many exercises doing process mapping there are found to be elements that were necessary for the manual process of a much smaller company that no-one has questioned because it has always been done that way.

Processes are the backbone of a procedures manual but not always shown as a map. If you understand the processes you can support your users better by streamlining business processes and systems to mirror process.

How do you start to map your processes?

The human element of many processes is not well documented and processes also cross departmental boundaries so it is important that if you are going to map them you get broad representation in the mapping team from all interested parties. If you can get all the “go to” people in your organisation in one place at the same time you will get a very good snapshot of your processes. The more processes there are the longer the job will take but if it can be achieved the benefits are many.

The process maps are also beneficial to the business continuity plan. If there is a catastrophic event the maps allow for processes to run as originally intended rather than temporary staff trying to guess how a process should work.

    Processes are hierarchical

The top level process has a series of sub processes. If you were to follow a recipe to make a cake there will be a list of ingredients and what to do with the ingredients but there will be no mention of the process to fetch the ingredients. High level processes make assumptions and detail comes at the lowest level it needs to and in the case of the recipe it assumes the ingredients fetch process has already occurred.

Every business has its methods for getting work done. They evolve as the businesses change and they are people led but today we need to record information along the way, to monitor whether they are working well and to accelerate them.

IT systems should be the framework for these methods, or processes, and understanding the processes builds strong resilient systems making business more efficient and effective.

Business process planning and analysis in strategic planning

Business process planning: Why process analysis is crucial for successful strategy development for any company

Most businesses typically spend time each 12 months acquiring new strategy goals and objectives. Goals are designed that reflect the complete strategy of the firm. Business objectives are then created along with the department level to assistance general
corporation goals. Goals are made to measure the progress in the direction of achieving distinct business objectives. And every single employee has goals that support complete tactics and strategies.

In a ideal world, there would not be any conflicting goals. All division goals would in actuality aid the business goals. Every employee would understand these objectives and recognize how to do the job he or she performs and contribute to the overall organization.

The corporation’s strategic plans would be executed flawlessly and the story would usually have a joyful ending. However, strategic objectives might be created in isolation. Department goals could be self serving and may not assist any other critical for business goals. Business departmental objectives could be in battle along with one or more objectives in reality.

Without proper strategic planning people will usually just see their own story or situation and have no thought what is going on outside their scope and activities.

The accumulation of processes, tools, resources and daily routines that take place in every single business organizational system is what finally determines an organization’s good or poor results. So business processes of any type of kind have to be analyzed so they support key business objectives.

Process analysis is specifically helpful in ensuring the accomplishment of business goals and objectives relating to client, consumer or customer service operations which is directly linked to profitability of the business.

A crucial key to transforming a business is the total comprehension of all the processes involved in it. This knowledge is necessary from any management approach to be of really worth, and it can be incorporated in overall good quality administration. Example of such a business systems and processes is ISO quality system which helps businesses identify, analyze and improve business processes, In adition audits like the Sarbanes Oxley allow managers to create better understanding of the company s operations.

Types of Business Degrees: From Marketing to Business Administration

As our economy becomes increasingly specialized and reliant on technology, degrees in business are quickly eclipsing liberal arts as the “do anything’” degree. With their focus on building relationships, innovation, and improving the bottom line, employers tend to view business degree holders as individuals who are ready to contribute to their organization and fulfill an array of roles, especially those at the management level. Adding a business degree to your credentials might help you move into higher levels of management or switch your career trajectory altogether. Learn more about the types of business degrees available to find out which direction in your business education is the best course to take.

    Business Degree Levels

Business degrees are provided at all levels of post-secondary education, from certificate programs through a Doctorate of Business Administration (DBA). Due to the broad variety, admission requirements can differ greatly. Certificate programs usually last less than two years and are open for individuals at both the undergraduate and graduate level. Two-year associate’s degree and four-year bachelor’s degree programs in business typically ask applicants to have a high school diploma or GED. Some undergraduate programs may also require standardized test scores, such as the SAT or ACT.

Both Master of Business Administration (MBA) and DBA schools require a four-year degree and might ask applicants to submit GRE scores. While most graduate business programs accept applicants from numerous undergraduate majors, students are often expected to have acquired a few years of real-world business experience prior to applying. Depending on the school, some doctoral programs may also require candidates to have first earned a master’s degree. MBA degrees usually take two years to complete, whereas DBA programs can take 3-4 years, but the exact timeline will vary by program.

    Business Degree Concentrations

In addition to the traditional business majors of business administration or business management, business degrees are also offered in a variety of specialized disciplines as separate majors within the business college, such as majors in finance, accounting or entrepreneurship. Additionally, many programs include concentrations within business administration programs, such as an MBA with an emphasis in human resources management, where students can take classes that will better help them in the particular field where the student would like to work. These types of programs have the benefit of providing not only a solid business foundation, but also a career-focused curriculum in a specific discipline within business. Among some of the more popular specialized business areas are:

    • Accounting
    • Entrepreneurship
    • Finance
    • Healthcare management
    • Human resources management
    • Information systems management
    • International business
