Preliminary Acceptance

Car insurance market faces overhaul

Exclusive pricing deals between motor insurers and price comparison websites will be banned, the UK competition regulator has said.

The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) said such deals were preventing insurers from making their products available more cheaply elsewhere.

But the CMA has ruled out a cap on replacement car and repair charges which it originally favoured.

It has been criticised by some for “inaction” following the inquiry.

The planned changes could reduce premiums by about £20 a year, the AA motoring organisation said.

But it questioned whether such a long inquiry was needed given it would make such a small difference to premiums.

Shopping around

The CMA and its predecessor have been studying the £11bn private motor insurance market since 2012, following a referral from the Office of Fair Trading (OFT). The inquiry is separate from new rules regarding whiplash claims. It believes that many of the 26 million private motorists in the UK are paying too much for their insurance.

Its research found most deals between insurers and price comparison websites called “price parity” agreements were restricting competition and leading to higher car insurance premiums overall.

More than half of all new car insurance business goes through price comparison websites, and up to 90% of this was priced according to these deals.

The deals stop insurers offering their products more cheaply elsewhere, and again ultimately push up the price of insurance, the CMA found.

“They certainly help motorists look for the best deal, but we want to see an end to clauses which restrict an insurer’s ability to price its products differently on different online channels,” said CMA deputy panel chairman Alasdair Smith.

It has ordered the agreements to end, a move welcomed by the Association of British Insurers (ABI). This is likely to take effect by early next year, unless there is an appeal against the order from members of the industry.

However, it will still allow agreements that mean the price quoted by insurers on their own websites will never be cheaper than on a price comparison website.

The CMA also recommended that the UK’s financial regulator, the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), should examine how insurers inform consumers about add-on products to car insurance policies.

“The way motor insurance-related add-on products are sold makes it hard for consumers to obtain the best value,” Mr Smith added.

The CMA said no-claims bonus protection was particularly problematic, with both the price of this product and its benefits often unclear to consumers.

“We are requiring insurers to provide much better information,” it said.

However, the CMA said it had been unable to find a way to resolve the issue of high car hire and repair charges for drivers not at fault in an accident.

Premiums are pushed up because the insurer of a driver who was not to blame in an accident arranges for a replacement car or repair, but the at-fault driver’s insurer foots the bill.

It said addressing the issue would require a “fundamental change in the law”. The CMA said its research found the extent of the problem was not as high as it first envisaged – amounting to an average increase on premiums of only £3 a year – meaning “it does not warrant such a radical measure”.

This conclusion was a relief for the Credit Hire Organisation (CHO), which represents companies that provide temporary replacement vehicles.

“We welcome the fact that, after a three-year investigation, the CMA has concluded that non-fault customers do indeed require our assistance in their hour of need, and their legal right to a replacement vehicle while their car is off the road has again been reinforced,” said Martin Andrews, director general of the CHO.

But James Dalton, head of motor insurance at the ABI, said: “[This] will be a bitter pill to swallow for honest motorists. Far from reducing the cost of car insurance, the CMA’s inaction simply entrenches the business models of some replacement vehicle providers who profit from inflating car hire charges at the consumer’s expense.

“The reality is that the CMA has ducked this challenge and when regulators fail, politicians need to step in to act.”

The British Insurance Brokers’ Association (BIBA) described the report as a “mixed bag”.

    Both of these images couldn t be further from the reality of network marketing. It s neither a hobby nor a get-rich-scheme but an opportunity for you to earn money running your own part- or full-time business.

    But what does it take to succeed in this industry? Vincent J. Kellsey, director of member services for the Direct Selling Women s Alliance. an organization that provides a variety of resources to women and men in the direct-selling industry, offers these tips for making it:

    Choose wisely. There are six key elements you should be looking for [when selecting an opportunity]. Number one: stability. How old is the company? Number two is excellent products or services that consumers will use and need more of.

    Number three is the pay plan–how even and fair and generous overall is the distribution? This is really crucial as the pay plan represents exactly how you ll get paid–or not get paid. There are really only two questions to ask [regarding this]: How many pennies out of each sales dollar get paid back to the distributors each month, and how fair is the distribution of these pennies between the old members and the new members?

    Number four is the integrity of the company and the management. As much as possible, [investigate] the experience of the CEO, [their] experience in the network marketing industry, and their background. [Have] they been successful in other companies in the industry? Do they have a good reputation?

    Number five is momentum and timing. Look at where the company s at, what s going on with the company, and if it s growing.

    Number six is support, training and business systems. You may have [chosen] a great company with excellent management, products that make a difference, a pay plan that s uniquely fair and very generous, and momentum and stability, but if you don t have a system in place that works, all of that [doesn t matter]. Most companies will have a transferable training system that they use, and that s where mentorship comes in.

    Practice what they teach. [To succeed,] you need to be willing to listen and learn from mentors. The way this industry is structured, it s in the best interests of the [MLM veterans in your company] to help you succeed, so they re willing to teach you the system. Whatever [your mentor] did to become successful, it s very duplicatible, but you have to be willing to listen and be taught and follow those systems.

    The higher-ups. It can be called various things, but the general term is the upline, meaning the people above you. How supportive are they? Do they call you? Do they help you put a plan in place? Are they as committed to your success as they are to their own? You should be able to relate to [the people in your upline] and be able to call them at any time to say I need some help. How much support there is from the people above you in the company is very important.

    Take up the lead with your downline. There s a term in the network marketing industry called orphans –when somebody is brought in and then the person who brought them in is just so busy bringing in other people that they don t spend the time to teach and train [the new person]. You should be prepared to spend at least 30 days helping a new person come into the industry–training them, supporting them and holding their hand until they feel confident to be able to go off on their own. You really need to ask yourself, are you willing to do that? Are you able to do that? This is really about long-term relationship building. It s not about just bringing people into the business and just moving forward. It s about working with these people and helping them to develop relationships.

    On the net. People are utilizing [the internet] as their main marketing tool. [You can set up your site] with autoresponders so when you capture leads, the autoresponder can follow up with that person. One of the greatest keys to success in this industry is follow-up. Many people will have someone call them who s interested or they ll call the person and say they re interested, but then they don t follow up with it. Automation on the internet has allowed a much more consistent method of following up.

    The only drawback with the internet is people who utilize it to spam. If there was one thing I could put forward to say, Do not do when utilizing the internet as a marketing tool, it s spamming because that can give a very bad reputation not only to you but also to the company you re working with.

    Taking care of business. This is a business, and just like if you were running a franchise or a storefront, you [should have an] accountant. You have all the same write-offs tax-wise that you have with running a [full-time] business, so it s very important to [do your research] prior to getting involved, before you start making money from it. How is that going to affect you tax-wise? What are your write-offs?

    It s important to set up a [support] team around you. I d suggest seeking out lawyers who deal in network marketing, so they re very versed in all the laws and how that affects [your business.]. There are also accountants who specialize in dealing with homebased businesses specifically in the direct-selling industry.

    Don t quit your day job. yet. Never leave your full-time position unless you re absolutely certain that the income that s coming in with this company is going to be there. [Be sure that] you ve been with the company [for awhile] and that you know it s a stable company, and the income that you re earning is equal to or greater than the income you re earning from your job before quitting.

A person with an alcohol problem may gulp or sneak drinks, drink alone or early in the morning, and suffer from the shakes. He or she may also have family, school, or work problems or get in trouble with the law because of drinking.

    The use of alcohol with medicines or illegal drugs may increase the effects of each.

    Alcohol abuse patterns vary. Some people drink and may be intoxicated (drunk) every day. Other people drink large amounts of alcohol at specific times, such as on the weekend. It is common for someone with an alcohol or drug problem to call in sick for work on Monday or Friday. He or she may complain of having a virus or the flu. Others may be sober for long periods and then go on a drinking binge that lasts for weeks or months.

    Someone with alcohol dependence may suffer serious withdrawal symptoms. such as trembling, delusions. hallucinations. and sweating. if he or she stops drinking suddenly (“cold turkey”). After alcohol dependence develops, it becomes very hard to stop drinking without outside help. Medical detoxification may be needed.



    Drug abuse includes the use of illegal drugs-such as marijuana. methamphetamines. cocaine. heroin. or other “street drugs”-and the abuse of legal prescription and nonprescription drugs. Some people use drugs to get a “high” or to relieve stress and emotional problems.

    Drugs like ecstasy (MDMA), ketamine, GHB, Rohypnol. and LSD, which are known as “club drugs,” may be found at all-night dances, raves, trances, or clubs. The use of club drugs accounts for increasing numbers of drug overdoses and emergency room visits. Inhalants like nitrous oxide may also be used at these clubs. Drugs come in different forms and can be used in different ways. They can be smoked, snorted, inhaled, taken as pills, put in liquids or food, put in the rectum or the vagina. or injected with a needle. Teens and young adults may be at risk for becoming victims of sexual assault or violent behavior in situations where these drugs are used.

    Some nonprescription medicines, such as cold medicines that have dextromethorphan as an ingredient, are being abused by teens and young adults as a way to get a “high.” Glue, shoe polish, cleaning fluids, and aerosols, are common household products with ingredients that can also be used to get a “high.”

    In the United States and Canada, approximately 40% of adults will use an illegal drug at some time during their lives. This does not include the use of alcohol or prescription medicines. Many people abuse more than one illegal substance at a time.

    Drug dependence or addiction occurs when you develop a physical or emotional “need” for a drug. You are unable to control your use of a drug despite the negative impact it has on your life. You may not be aware that you have become dependent on a drug until you try to stop taking it. Drug withdrawal can cause uncomfortable and sometimes dangerous symptoms. The usual treatment is to gradually reduce the dose of the drug until you can completely stop using it.


    High-risk groups

    Some groups of people are more likely than others to have problems related to alcohol or drug abuse. These groups include:

    • Teenagers and young adults. Approximately one-half of all high school seniors in the U.S. admit to having used alcohol or an illegal drug. Substance abuse in this age group increases the risk of involvement in crime, high-risk sexual behavior, accidents, and injuries. Teens that use alcohol and drugs are more likely to have poor school performance and have higher dropout rates. For more information, see the topic Teen Alcohol and Drug Abuse .
    • Women.
      • Although women are less likely than men to abuse alcohol, they are more likely to have alcohol-related health problems, such as liver disease .
      • Women are more likely to have problems with prescription medicines. More than two-thirds of all tranquilizers are prescribed for women. Tranquilizers, sedatives, pain medicines, and amphetamines are abused most often by women.
      • Alcohol and drug abuse in women increases the risk of developing other health problems, such as osteoporosis or depression .
      • Women who abuse alcohol and drugs attempt suicide four times more frequently than nonabusers.
    • Adults older than age 65. Drug abuse in this age group is a problem because of the high number of prescription medicines and the lack of coordination between doctors. Signs of alcohol or drug abuse may be mistaken for other disease problems or simply overlooked as a symptom of “aging.” Many older adults “self-medicate” with alcohol to help relieve sleep problems, depression. and other problems. Alcohol abuse is more common than drug abuse in older adults. Alcohol contributes to car crashes and other types of severe injury in this group of people.     • Low-income populations. Drug and alcohol abuse is a problem for many minorities, including disabled adults, the homeless, and minority populations.
    • Babies. Drug and alcohol use during pregnancy can cause birth defects and increase the risk of infant death. Babies are more likely to have learning disabilities and social and behavioral problems when their mothers use alcohol or drugs during pregnancy. Babies with mothers who use alcohol are at risk for problems from fetal alcohol syndrome .
    • Children. Studies show that children who are exposed to drug abuse in the home, especially methamphetamine. have higher rates of depression. anxiety. post-traumatic stress, anger, and alcohol and drug abuse. They also are more likely to have learning problems and do poorly in school.

    Recognizing a problem

    Alcohol is part of many people’s lives and may have a place in cultural and family traditions. It can sometimes be hard to know when you begin to drink too much.

    There is a strong connection between the use of drugs and alcohol and high-risk sexual behaviors. This increases a person’s chance of getting sexually transmitted infections (STIs). hepatitis B. and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) .

    Discovering business needs requires a technical and people focus

    To do this, Chris works closely with businesses to help them work out what they need. As a person who has never been able to just sit behind a computer, he enjoys the chance analysis work gives him to get out and work directly with people.

    “There are many challenges in this role that are not just technical; you have to be able to get the information you need from people.”

    Background in software development led to consulting

    Chris says he always had an inquisitive mind when it came to technology. He graduated as an electronic engineer and worked as a software developer before moving to consulting, where it became less development-focused.

    Chris now works in a senior consulting role and is intent on staying in IT. “I’m going in the direction of IT management and that is the way I see my future.”

    Shortage of business analysts

    While demand for business analysts is expected to remain strong, the number of IT trainees coming through is insufficient to meet demand.

    A survey of IT employers in February 2015 reported that 79% of employers were planning to hire additional staff. Business analysis was the top skill employers were looking for. However, 28% of employers also reported greater difficulty finding staff in 2015 than in 2014.

    As a result of these factors, business analyst appears on Immigration New Zealand’s long-term skill shortage list. This means the Government is actively encouraging skilled business analysts from overseas to work in New Zealand.
