The stock market is vanishing

The stock market isn’t what it used to be.

As noted by Steven DeSanctis, equity strategist at Jefferies, the sheer number of companies listed on stock exchanges has been dropping off precipitously.

The number of firms with shares publicly listed in the University of Chicago’s Center for Research in Security Prices aggregate index has fallen to 3,267 from a peak of 6,364 in 1997.

This, in fact, is the lowest number of listed stocks since 1984.

There are a number of possible reasons for this. Here’s DeSanctis’ breakdown:

“Between the lack of IPO activity. the pick-up of M A, and buybacks, the US equity world is becoming smaller and smaller, and this could be one of many reasons why active managers are lagging behind their indexes. Companies may not want to come public due to the additional cost of Sarbanes-Oxley or the fact that the private market has become a bigger source of financing than it has been in the past.”

While the answer is probably some combination of these factors, DeSanctis also thinks that the declining number of stocks may be affecting the performance of many professional stock pickers.

The argument is that with fewer companies to choose from, active managers are forced to crowd into certain stocks. Crowding makes it impossible to differentiate returns and causes these managers, in DeSanctis’ mind, to fall short of their benchmarks.

Behind ecommerce s social and omnichannel evolution lie APIs, whether they be internal or 3rd party. Powering apps, widgets, sharing tools and content feeds, APIs enable systems to communicate with other systems, and empower you to expand your catalog and content experiences beyond a storefront.

For us non-techies, understanding the opportunity for using and monetizing APIs (application programming interfaces) can be best explained by real-world examples. Today s post is based on a section of slides from a presentation Open APIs: What s Hot, What s Not? by John Musser of ProgrammableWeb. We ve fleshed out the examples to provide context for each model.

Facebook offers its API free to any developer. However, the model is freemium like Apple and Google, it takes a cut of in-app payments, e.g. the purchase of Farmville Coins. Facebook charges a 30% service fee, plus any applicable sales tax or VAT, on each Facebook Payments transaction.

Developer Pays

Amazon Web Services is a cloud computing product, its appeal is its efficiency pay only for what you need to use. It can scale up or down as needed.

Developers can use the email marketing tool s API to create a customized UI or reporting dashboard, for example. Pricing depends on the usage tier you fall in (how many database calls you make in a month).

Compete offers a free and paid all access version of its data, similar to free anti-virus software and a premium edition.

Power-PPC managers may desire beefed-up functionality, such as auto-generated keywords, ad text, and destination URLs. Google Adwords prices its API access a bit like CPM developers are billed $0.25 per 1000 API calls.

For ecommerce sites that want to use PayPal transaction processing without exposing customers to the PayPal interface, the Direct Payment API allows developers to design and host their own checkout pages while the payment processor works behind the scenes. PayPal makes money off the transaction fees.

Developer Gets Paid

Google AdSense Host API enables community sites to share AdSense revenue with its users to incentivize content creation. Think YouTube channels.

There are a few affiliate models. Publishers who advertise Amazon products on their websites can earn commissions when referred visitors make a purchase. Shopping.com ads pay out per click.

Rdio is a recurring-revenue product, sharing the recurring spoils (subscription and mp3 downloads) with its affiliate partners through LinkShare. You can earn recurring revenue each month, for as long as a subscriber recruited by you remains an Rdio subscriber. You can also earn revenue each time someone purchases and downloads an MP3.

Jigsaw offers a unique way for developers to earn Jigsaw points by affirming or challenging the accuracy of Jigsaw data (helping Jigsaw improve its data quality).


Ebay s APIs support sellers with content population (e.g. create listings, upload data feeds) and management (leave feedback, update tracking information, manage disputes) which indirectly results in revenue.

Software vendors offer APIs for 3rd party developers to extend their platform. This helps the software vendor focus on the core product without complicating their road map with features not everyone needs. Extensions can be developed to enhance the product, make it more attractive to users who can add the apps they want, and save internal resources. Some software companies have a marketplace where apps can be discovered and downloaded.

Content publishers like the New York Times don t sell their API to syndication partners, but the API facilitates the syndication.

Internal use, consumer facing

Twitter s API is offered to 3rd party developers to improve the user experience with a broad range of Twitter experiences like Klout, Hootsuite, Clicktotweet and Twitalyzer. Netflix API enables it to be extended to mobile devices, increasing the attractiveness of the service.

Internal use, internal facing

Internal facing APIs are used on your back end to use your own data to build out your own features. Ecommerce APIs, for example, may be used to build a companion mobile app or connect social data to your ecommerce platform. NPR offers external API access to its radio programs that can be connected with its Transcript API, which it could also leverage internally, for example.

The principal value of a business broker is to act as a buffer between the buyer and the seller. A broker can say certain things to a buyer and certain things to a seller and wind up with a productive discussion. The broker can tell the owner the price is too high, relay what has to be done to make a deal–very openly and candidly–and discuss how the differences in viewpoint can be ironed out effectively.

If you’re in the market to buy an existing business, a broker can help you find businesses for sale that fit your parameters, including location, industry and size. The broker will typically charge you a commission of 5 to 10 percent of the purchase price, but the assistance brokers can offer, especially for first-time buyers, is often worth the cost. They will also ensure that news of the sale remains confidential, that loyal customers, staff, vendors and suppliers find out only when you’re ready to let them know.

Then there are administrative issues. An experienced business broker knows what paperwork to file, and when. They also coordinate efforts between lawyers, CPAs, bankers, insurance agents and others.

seller and negotiate the details of the deal at a time when emotions can, and do, run high. A small business is often one of the biggest assets a business owner has, one which he or she has spent considerable time and money building. An experienced broker knows how to price a business and can toot the business’s horn in a way you might not be able to. The buyer can ask the broker pointed questions that might be difficult to ask you directly and get the answers he or she needs. The broker can also help answer any questions or resolve any problems that develop during the course of the sale.

When it comes to choosing a business broker, make sure there’s good chemistry between you and your broker and that the two of you communicate well. You’re paying your broker to look out for your interests, negotiate successfully on your behalf, and complete the transaction in a timely and professional manner.

To find a business broker to help you sell your business, take these steps:

  • Check newspaper ads under “Business Opportunities.” Look in your local and regional papers, as well as in The Wall Street Journal. In 2012, an estimated 5.1 million US residents traveled overseas for business. With the increasingly global economy, this number is expected to increase. Because of the nature of the trip, business travelers may face different health risks than do leisure travelers. Find out about some of the risks of business travel and what you can do to protect yourself.

You don t always get much advance notice before a business trip. CDC recommends seeing a doctor 4 6 weeks before a trip, but if you don t have that much time, even a last-minute visit can be useful. Some vaccines can be given on shortened schedules or may offer partial protection, even if you don t have time for all the doses. You can also talk to your doctor about health risks at your destination and what you can do to stay healthy (not all diseases can be prevented with vaccines). You might be frantically trying to pick up your suit from the cleaner and get someone to feed the dog, but while you re rushing around, don t forget to pack a travel health kit. Your kit should include first-aid supplies, any prescription medicines you take, and over-the-counter medicine for diarrhea. Pack some latex condoms in your kit as well, since sexually transmitted diseases may be common where you re going.

Leisure travelers may have time to be able to adjust to jet lag naturally, but business travelers often have to hit the ground running. If you have time, for a few days before you leave, try to shift your sleep cycle by a couple of hours earlier or later (depending on where you re going). Stay hydrated while you re traveling, and avoid alcohol and caffeine. Try to sleep on long flights; if you have trouble sleeping on planes, you might want to pack a mild sedative in your carry-on luggage.

Business travelers are frequently under a lot of work-related stress, in addition to the stress of traveling. To minimize the negative health effects of stress, eat healthful meals, exercise regularly, avoid alcohol, and get a good night s rest. On longer trips, to maintain your mental health, stay in regular contact with your friends and family at home.

Your hosts may want to take you out to toast your new business relationship, but be careful about drinking too much alcoholic drinks in some countries can be stronger than you expect. Be careful about tap water, ice, and raw fruits and vegetables, or you may end up spending much of the return flight in the airplane bathroom.

Some People Have a Therapist. I Have a Business Coach.

We all have issues. For many people, those issues tend to be related to personal goals and problems, such as relationships and the like. For me, my anxiety, focus, goals and frustrations seem to mostly be around business.

So, while many people hire therapists, I have the business equivalent: a business coach.

I have been working with my coach, Alan Roby. for close to six years. We meet via phone for an hour, usually twice a month. He has helped me to not only transition myself from investment banker to a media and entrepreneurial hybrid, but he is a constant source of support.

While coaches can vary in price — from less than $100 to several hundred dollars or more per session — price shouldn t be the deciding factor. You want to find a coach who understands you and your business and that you are comfortable with, but also one that will push back on you, too. Hiring a yes man (or woman) won t produce a good return for your investment.

Getting recommendations can be a good place to start on your search for a coach. Also do some research online and then try out a few in a complimentary or low-cost initial session (which most coaches offer) to get a feel with whom you think would be the best fit for your needs.

Here s why I think that this type of business therapy is helpful and how you and your business can benefit from it.

I pay to only talk about me and my business

I m an advisor — it s the role I play in life. That role is so prevalent that for a while, my nickname was Lucy (a la The Dr. Is IN from the Peanuts cartoon). Personally and professionally, I give advice to solve other people s problems.

This means that most of the time, I am not focused on or talking about my development.

By paying a business coach, I get, for a full-hour at a time, to talk about and focus on nothing other than me, my problems, my opportunities, my goals and did I mention me? It forces me to schedule time to work on my own business, time that I would likely have spent helping someone else. This discipline has been invaluable in morphing my professional life and growing my business endeavors.

Additional business knowledge

While I do have many friends who would oblige listening to me if I asked, many don t understand business. So, their help isn t so helpful in problem solving. Having a savvy business person in my corner gives needed perspective, such as seeing the forest through the trees, so to speak, from someone whose input is relevant.

Consistency and history

Having a history of working together allows my coach to see patterns or to reference things and opportunities that I have mentioned in the past that I may have overlooked or even forgotten, but that could be helpful in the present and the future.


Because my coach is a paid advisor and not a friend, he will call me on the few occasions where I need to be called out. Friends, family and even colleagues are often hesitant to do this because they have a multi-faceted relationship with me and want to keep up the warm fuzzies in our interactions. The coaching relationship is aligned around helping me to succeed, which gives my coach more freedom to be honest and helpful.

No judgment

On the other side of the coin, I am also brutally honest with my coach, because I know that there is no judgment. I don t have to worry about hurting someone else s feelings or being vulnerable. Not that I am one to really be anything other than brutally honest, but I still feel like I have more liberty to deep-dive into the nitty-gritty of my moods, challenges, etc. because I know that he will help me to work through those, without having to worry about it making family dinner awkward.

So, whether you are seeking discipline, a forum to vent or even a sanity check without judgment, I recommend that you invest in a business coach to help your business get to the next level.

Look for a business that has some connection to types of work you’ve done in the past, classes you’ve taken, or perhaps skills you’ve developed through a hobby. It’s almost always a mistake to buy a business you know little about, no matter how good it looks. For one thing, your lack of knowledge about the industry might cause you to overpay. And if you do buy the business, you’ll have to struggle up a steep learning curve afterward.

As you begin your hunt for the perfect company, consider starting close to home. For instance, if you’re currently employed by a small business you like, find out whether the present owner would consider selling. Other avenues to explore include newspaper or online ads, trade associations, real estate brokers, and business suppliers. Finally, there are business brokers — people who earn a commission from business owners who need help finding buyers. It’s fine to use a broker to help locate a business opportunity, but it’s foolish to rely on a broker — who doesn’t make a commission until a sale is made — for advice about the quality of a business or the fairness of its selling price.

Research the Business’s History and Finances

Before you seriously consider buying a particular business, find out as much as you can about it. Thoroughly review copies of the business’s certified financial records, including cash flow statements, balance sheets, accounts payable and receivable, employee files including benefits and any employee contracts, and major contracts and leases, as well as any past lawsuits and other relevant information.

This review (lawyers call it “due diligence”) will not only help you understand how the company ticks, but will alert you to potential problems. For instance, if a major contract like a lease prohibits you from taking it over without the landlord or other party’s permission, you won’t want to finalize the deal without getting that permission.

Don’t be shy about asking for information about the business, and if the seller refuses to supply it, or if you find any misinformation, this may be a sign that you should look elsewhere. Closing the Deal

If you’ve thoroughly investigated a company and wish to go ahead with a purchase, there are a few more steps you’ll have to take. First, you and the owner will have to agree on a fair purchase price. If you’re a small business owner, it’s easier than you may have heard to establish a web presence.

Google will help you get your small business up online

After launching the Get Your Business Online program several years ago, Google has now rebranded the effort and is calling it Let’s Put Our Cities on the Map. By logging on and selecting your state, you can have access to the following:

  • Free, easy-to-build website
  • Free customized domain name
  • Free web hosting for one year
  • Free online tools and training
  • Learn how to put more information about your business into Google
  • Get your company verified for Google searches
  • Add information such as location, hours of operation
  • Add photos to enhance the listing
  • Get a diagnostic tool to see how you can improve yourlisting and visibility

After the first year, you’ll have to pay $16 annually for your domain name and $6 a month for hosting. Additional email support is available after 12 months for a fee.

So the easy part is getting your site up and running. The hard part is getting traffic to your site and updating your info online all the time. Google is hosting free seminars across the country to help you with that part.

For example, if you’re a restaurant owner, you might want to post your daily special each day. If you’re a retail storefront, you’d probably want to post at least a weekly special. A static website that doesn’t get updated won’t engage people. They’ll visit once or twice online and never come back again.

Other options to get your small business online

While I like the Google options, my new favorite choice for small business websites is a pay service called SquareSpace.com. My second favorite choice is SmallBusiness.Yahoo.com. Check them out!

    As a small business owner myself, I know how important it is to stay up-to-date with the ever changing trends that the business world throws at us.

    Because I watch very little TV, and rely heavily on the internet for keeping up-to-date with the news, it s somewhat obvious that I d also use the online medium to learn, consume and also produce and market my own content. Bloggers (and increasingly, podcasters, as well as video producers and many are wearing all three hats!) have the ability to express themselves in somewhat ‘real time’, and in an evergreen way, by keeping their content fresh, and sharing their opinions with the world.

    However, in the world of business blogging there s a lot of noise. A lot of content marketers are gagging to get your attention, and with only so many minutes a day to devote to learning and consuming content (personally, I put aside around 30-45 minutes daily), you’ve got to be very strict with who’s content you make time for.

    This is the reason why I’ve put this list together. This collection are the best small business blogs I know of right now. My personal favorite / go-to people in the world of small business blogging and online business building. Individually they strike a chord with me enough to keep me coming back for more, together they act as an ever-growing encyclopaedia of business brilliance.

    What is a ‘Business Model’

    A business model is the way in which a company generates revenue and makes a profit from company operations. Analysts use the metric gross profit as a way to compare the efficiency and effectiveness of a firm’s business model. Gross profit is calculated by subtracting the cost of goods sold from revenues .

    BREAKING DOWN ‘Business Model’

    During the dotcom boom analysts went in search of net income. The internet is a disruptive technology with the ability to revolutionize certain industries, but where was the cash flow? When analysts couldn’t find the cash flow, they settled for the business model to legitimize the industry. Instead of looking at net income, calculated as gross profit minus operating expenses, analysts concentrated on gross profit. If the gross profit was high enough, analysts theorized, the cash flow would come.

    Business Model Components

    The two primary levers of a company’s business model are pricing and costs. A company can raise prices and it can find inventory at reduced costs. Both actions increase gross profit. Gross profit is often considered the first line of profitability because it only considers costs, not expenses. It focuses strictly on the way in which a company does business, not the efficiency of management. Investors that focus on business models are leaving room for an ineffective management team. They believe the best business models can run themselves.

    Comparing Business Models

    As an example, assume there are two companies and both companies rent movies. Prior to the internet, both companies made $5 million in revenues and the total cost of inventory sold was $4 million. Gross profit is calculated as $5 million minus $4 million, or $1 million. Gross profit margin is calculated as gross profit divided by revenues, or 20%.

    After the advent of the internet, company B decides to offer movies online instead of renting or selling a physical copy. This change disrupts the business model in a positive way. The licensing fees do not change, but the cost of holding inventory is down considerably. In fact, the change reduces storage and distribution costs by $2 million. The new gross profit for the company is $5 million minus $2 million, or $3 million. The new gross profit margin is 60%, which is much higher than 20%.

    Company B isn’t making more in sales, but it figured out a way to revolutionize its business model, which greatly reduces costs. Managers at company B have an additional 40% more in margin to play with than managers at company A. Managers at company A have little room for error.

    9 Best Looking Business Websites

    There are many different types of businesses and there are also many ways to promote those businesses. A proper website is a must and an area no one should cheap-out on. No website is perfect and there are always decisions one may not agree with, however with solid designers and knowledgeable coders your website could compete with the diverse examples of great web design on this list.

    1. Pace Law

    Who would have thought a law office could have such a beautiful and trendy website? Most that I have come across are very old-school. It’s refreshing to see an industry like this have such an intriguing website. This design has a very solid theme throughout: beautiful photography, bold typography, appropriate line lengths, a flawless responsive experience, and a proper user experience that deals with a lot of written content.

    However, there are a couple things I dislike about this site. First, the contact link in the global navigation does not take you to a contact page, rather it uses the “mailto:” function which for me breaks the experience. I believe the better choice would have been a contact page with a simple form for users to fill out. Second, I dislike the slideshow at the bottom of the homepage because there are no user controls. It changes on its own and can be frustrating when you are trying to read. Overall though, this is a very nice website which should catch the eye of anyone looking for a lawyer. I know I would be interested, but that might just be the designer in me talking.

    2. Auger

    This mostly “flat” website has a great design and looks good on any device. By using solid bold colours and vector images they have the perfect recipe for a responsive site. I love photography on websites, however in the responsive world they can end up looking distorted and pixelated at certain orientations; flat colour and vectors seamlessly melt between devices.

    When you first land on the site you are presented a global navigation that sticks to the bottom of the landing area no matter how you orientate the window. When you scroll the navigation moves to the top perfectly. The services section is very well designed. There is a lot to talk about in this area and it is very well parcelled for the user. Each icon when clicked exposes important information. By hiding it behind each icon, the page is not cluttered with a thousand different facts which may overwhelm users. The user can take in what they want, when they want. They may have taken this concept a bit too far though, as I think the “a bit about us” and “Innovation and Technology” sections should be viewable without having to click. But as I said, you will never agree with someone’s design 100% of the time.

    3. Lexus

    The Lexus website is stunning. Very good photography and a proper user experience. There are some parts that are a bit too flashy for me personally, I like things to function a bit simpler but overall it’s very good. They really get customers interested in their cars. There are inspirational videos, awesome photos, and an easy to use “car builder.” The user can choose the car model and decide how they want it to look and function. They make each step in the process clear and they keep the user oriented while they are designing their vehicle. The user is clear how many steps there are and where they are in the process. I found the website to be a bit buggy on mobile devices though. This may have to do with that bulky, overly flashy mega-nav. As a whole though, this is a very nice website compared to most car companies.

    4. Bienville Capital Management

    This is a very simple design that transitions to mobile perfectly. They keep the information concise and focused. One of my favourite sayings is “a website is like a first date, it’s about making a good first impression and giving them a bit of information.” If the user is intrigued, they will contact you to find out more details. A website should not be overrun with walls and walls of text that explain every single minute detail of your company. Let them discover that information over time. Give them the important information first.

    5. Emblem

    This website is all sorts of funky and fun. Lots of eye catching imagery and bright colours to pique a user’s curiosity. I particularly liked the services section. When the user arrives at the services page they are prompted to fill out a short quiz (which they assure you is quick) to help guide you to what services will be most helpful to you. Each question is presented on its own and is a simple “Yes” or “No” answer. Once you have taken the quiz it presents you with every appropriate service you may need. If you don’t want to take the quiz, you can skip it and get right to choosing what you think you need for yourself. And guess what? It’s responsive!

    6. Tigerlilly

    This website is beautiful and clean. It is very easy to use and they do a great job at explaining what they do. A mix of iconography, screen captures, and small amounts of text give you just enough detailed information without being totally overwhelmed. I love the typefaces used, the subtle animations, the icon based sub-navigation, and the fine use of white space. It has a consistent user experience from desktop to mobile and it just looks really pretty. I would hire them.

    7. Fisker Automotive

    Great website and even greater car. Not all websites need to be responsive and mobile friendly. Sometimes it’s just about making the best possible desktop experience. This website does just that. They really bring you in and make you want this car. Awesome photography, small amounts of text information, and very cool animations to help explain how this electric vehicle is like no other. This website really seems to understand that less is more. Wonderful use of whitespace and limited text information makes you feel a sense of relief and openness. The worst feeling is when you land on a page and you become overwhelmed with information that you just can be bothered to read.

    8. Brooklyn Soap Company

    One of my favourites in the list. I like the overall desaturated look this site has. The website reflects the products very well. Both the soaps and the website have a classy understated feel. Nothing is flashy about this company. They make quality products and they don’t have to dazzle you with crazy graphics and animations to get you interested. Not much to say except: job well done.

    9. Moment

    This site is almost the direct opposite of the Brooklyn Soap website. It is loud and proud with lots of imagery, textures, graphics, and videos. However, an extreme sport calls for this type of design. It fits perfectly. My favourite part of this website has to be the fact that no matter where you are on the site, there is a small tab below the global navigation that says “Ski Collection.” The user has access to the main product at all times, the skis. There is a lot of exciting lifestyle content to help establish the brand’s image, but they do a great job of keeping the main goal of the business in sight at all times.

    How is the index score calculated?

    The overall rankings are determined by the agencies Best Places to Work index scores, which measure employee satisfaction and commitment.

    The index score is not a combined average of an agency s category scores. It is calculated using a proprietary weighted formula that looks at responses to three different questions in the U.S. Office of Personnel Management s Federal Employee Viewpoint Survey. The more the question predicts intent to remain, the higher the weighting.

    Why are agencies grouped by size?

    We group agencies by workforce size to provide comparisons of agencies that may face similar management challenges in terms of numbers of employees and locations. The groupings have undergone several changes over the years. In 2003 the rankings featured only one list of agencies, including agencies as large as the Department of Defense (over 600,000 employees) and as small as the Office of Management and Budget (450 employees).

    Subcomponents, the subagencies, bureaus, divisions, centers and offices within agencies need to have at least 100 femployees.

    Why aren t past rankings shown?

    We have different numbers of agencies participating in the rankings. For example, in 2007, 222 subcomponents participated in the rankings and the median rank was 111. In 2015, 315 subcomponents participated in the rankings and the median rank was 157. We also have made changes to the ranking s categories. For these reasons, the rank is not the most accurate reflection of an agency s performance over time. We recommend focusing on score and quartile trends instead.

    Why would an agency not have scores in some categories?

    The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, Government Accountability Office, Intelligence Community, Millennium Challenge Corporation, Office of the Inspector General at the Tennessee Valley Authority, Peace Corps, Smithsonian Institution, and U.S. Army Audit Agency do not participate in the OPM survey but conduct comparable surveys that include our three index questions. These agencies may or may not include the questions required for the category scores.

    Why would an agency not have scores for some demographics?

    To calculate a Best Places to Work index score for a demographic group at an agency, we require at least 30 respondents in the category. If there were fewer than 30, we did not report a score.

    As a big fan of information, Knowledge is Power, I was very impressed with the Read to Succeed Seminar I attended at this publication s office. I know the title smacks of a literacy program, but it was actually an informative meeting on how to read the weekly publication to expand on networking and marketing.

    In these uncertain economic times, newspapers and jobs are falling by the wayside. Judd Walsh opened my eyes on ways to utilize many of the great sections to find sales leads, build market intelligence, and prospecting. He gave great tips and suggestions.

    Some of the most valuable info in the SFBT is in the form of The Lists published weekly and then at the end of the year in a large compendium. These Listings cover topics such as Best Places to Work in the Bay Area to The Top Wineries. Event announcements and articles on the different industries are excellent resources.

    Five top business ideas that made millions

    According to Paul Graham, investor and founder of Y Combinator, the best way to get a winning business idea is to not think of any. Instead, you should be looking at which problems you can solve.

    “The very best start-up ideas tend to have three things in common: they’re something the founders themselves want, that they themselves can build, and that few others realize are worth doing,” Graham said in a blog post in November.

    “Microsoft, Apple, Yahoo, Google and Facebook all began this way.”

    Now that the working year is well underway, there will be plenty of unfulfilled employees wracking their brains for that one business concept that will make them their fortune.

    Here are the stories of five great ideas that actually managed to blossom into highly successful businesses:

    1. Innocent Drinks

    Friends Adam Balon, Jon Wright and Richard Reed appeared to have been pretty well set after leaving Cambridge University.

    Two became management consultants. One moved into advertising. They all made good money and lived comfortable lives in London.

    But there was a shared nagging feeling that there was a bit more to life. On a snowboarding holiday in 1998, the trio did little else than throw around ideas for a new business.

    They realised there was a gap in the market for a new type of smoothie product, one based on natural ingredients and overtly ethical values.

    After spending six months blending different combinations of fruit at home, the trio set up a stall at a music festival to test the concept.

    The decision whether to continue was left entirely in the hands of consumers. A sign above the stall read “shall we give up our jobs to make these smoothies?” One bin read ‘Yes’, the other ‘No.’ Customers would make their judgement by throwing their empty bottles in either bin.

    Happily, ‘yes’ won. Balon, Wright and Reed went on to write and re-write their business plan 11 times, before being turned down by a succession of potential investors and banks for funding.

    A desperate email with the subject line ‘Does anyone know anyone rich?’ was sent to everyone the founders knew, resulting in Maurice Pinto, a wealthy American businessman, pitching in £250,000.

    Innocent Drinks made its first million in turnover in its second year and now sells around two million smoothies a week, commanding a 75% market share in the UK. In 2009, Coca-Cola took an 18% stake in the company for £30 million. A year later the beverage giant paid £65 million for a 58% stake.

    Reed says: If you re 70% sure about an idea then go for it. Because if you wait till you re 100% confident in business… you ll never make a decision, you ll never get anywhere.

    One of the things I like best about SiSense is how it’s out of the box ease of use has the ability to evolve into a much more advanced analytics tool with continued use. Plugins, custom javascript, upgrades, and new features ensure that I’m always improving the analytics I can do with the tool. Also the ability to set regular email reports, download dashboards as pdfs, and quickly push changes to the users lets us answer business questions on demand in a way we never could before.

    One of the things I dislike most about SiSense is their Elasticbue build process. As our data models have expanded we’ve found it difficult to manage the build times of our larger cubes which can take several hours to build. For instance, we cannot build changes to the cube while one of the regularly scheduled builds is occurring and the ‘stop build’ functionality has never been very responsive. It is my understanding that the next version will completely redesign the build process so I’m looking forward to seeing these changes.


    When evaluating BI software don’t worry about how ‘pretty’ the dashboards can be. While the flashy widgets and beautiful charts have an initial appeal you’ll quickly find that the most important information you can show the end users is KPIs and pivot tables supported by some graphs. Ease of use, the ability to transform data, and quickly publish dashboards to users is much more important in the long run. This is the reason we stopped using Tableau and are strictly using SiSense now.

    Some of the default machine (server) requirements are high, should be considered when expecting major expansion of the business.


    There are other solution out there and that haven’t got the chance to check, so I can’t compare.
    But. I must admit that I didn’t feel the need to change my BI solution and I believe it says a lot.

    Even though I had limited technical experience with database modeling, Sisense and team made it simple to get functional dashboards within the first 30 days. The dashboards look beautiful and the end users are thrilled with the results. So far, I have been able to field all requests from users without relative ease.

    Their forum/user support seems sparse, but I have been able to find support for pretty much everything I need.


    Make sure you have someone who understands your data structure on the onboarding calls.

    SiSense leverages two best paradigms of the modern computer world: an in-memory store and rapid, no fuss web-based insight delivery. I can see the vendor is proud of their product and understands modern BI well. Also, the support and sales staff members I dealt with are full of positively charging energy, which is rare these days.

    The new version of the product was not test driven long enough. The older version was chosen out of so many other BI offerings. It is hard to nitpick an area of improvement now. Every team member I polled in my company only has good words to say about SiSense.


    Do your homework in terms of research, not by just looking at the Magic Quadrant. Gather the precise objectives a BI solution must deliver. Do not pick too many vendors, and do not start with polls like “What do you use for BI?” It will just make you read all the BI solution names. Then narrow down to 2-3 out of 5-7. And test drive each side-by-side.

    B2B websites can be sorted into the following categories:

    • Company websites. The target audience of many company sites is other companies and their employees. These sites can be thought of as round-the-clock mini-trade exhibits. Some company sites sell directly from the site, effectively e-tailing to other businesses.
    • Product supply and procurement exchanges.     Many B2B sites fall into more than one of these groups. Models for B2B sites are still evolving.

    1. Microsoft Office for Tablets (Free)

    Android tablet owners don t have to waste their time with Microsoft s super-limited Office Mobile apps, which were the only option for mobile office users until recently. Now Microsoft has launched a full-featured version of Office for Android tablets. The Android apps, which include Word. PowerPoint and Excel. are a lot like the full desktop versions, right down to the iconic options ribbon at the top of the interface. And they re optimized for touch devices, with large, easy-to-tap buttons. Plus, they integrate with Microsoft s OneDrive cloud-storage platform, so your documents stay synced across all your devices. The Office for Android apps aren t available for Android smartphones just yet, however.

    2. Google Docs, Sheets and Slides(Free)

    The best productivity suite for Android smartphones is still Google s own collection. The apps include word processor Docs. spreadsheet editor Sheets. and presentation maker Slides. Google s apps have more features and a cleaner, more attractive interface than competing office apps on the platform. They also offer better tools to insert tables, images, charts and other complex elements into your documents, and they re compatible with Microsoft Office files, so you can seamlessly transition between your desktop computer and your mobile device. And since you can edit offline now, you never have to worry about losing service.

    There are quite a few solid cloud-storage options available for Android, but Google Drive is our top pick, because this service comes built right into the operating system. Like similar services Dropbox, Box and OneDrive, to name a few Google Drive lets you store files and documents online, so they re backed up and accessible from anywhere on any Android device with an Internet connection. As a bonus, Google Drive is integrated with QuickOffice; just sign in with your Google account credentials to get access to all documents stored in the cloud. Plus, every edit you make in QuickOffice is automatically backed up to Google Drive.

    4. Microsoft Remote Desktop (Free)

    For small business owners, Microsoft s Remote Desktop app is a reliable and secure way to connect remotely to your work PC from your Android phone or tablet. It s also a simple way to use your Windows applications on the go. For example, you can take advantage of the full desktop versions of Microsoft Word or Excel right from your smartphone or tablet to view and edit documents from anywhere.

    Microsoft s OneNote has a few advantages over competing note-taking apps. For starters, we prefer its easy-to-use interface; Evernote may have more in-depth features, but it s not as user-friendly as OneNote. Plus, OneNote automatically syncs all your notes to OneDrive, so they re backed up and accessible via the cloud. We like the OneNote integration because it works with your existing Microsoft account, so there s no need to create and maintain another account. OneNote works best with a stylus-equipped device, such as those in Samsung s Galaxy Note line, so you can draw diagrams and write notes by hand. The app can even transcribe handwritten notes so they re searchable later on.

    6. QuickBooks for Android (Free with a Quickbooks desktop subscription, starting at $12.95)

    QuickBooks offers solid accounting tools to help you track and manage your finances. The Android app isn t a fully-featured, mobile version of the QuickBooks desktop application; think of it as a mobile companion app with useful tools to help you track sales, send out invoices and review recent payments when you re away from the office. It requires a QuickBooks subscription, but a free 30-day trial is available.

    7. Square Register (Free)

    No small business is too small to accept credit cards, and you don t need a lot of special equipment to do it. Once you download the Square Register app, you can sign up to receive a credit card reader dongle free in the mail. Just plug the dongle into the headphone jack on your iPhone, and swipe a credit card to start processing payments on the go. The app also allows you to enter credit card information manually. Square takes a cut of every payment, but face it: If your business doesn t accept credit cards, you are losing out on business.

    8. Expense Manager (Free)

    Expense Manager is a personal finance app with tons of tools for entrepreneurs. The app lets you categorize, record and track your small business s expenses with an easy-to-use interface, then organizes them into visual graphs to show you where your money is going.     If you need a solid video conferencing app to meet remotely with employees or clients, it s hard to beat the service that s synonymous with video chat.     Our favorite overall calendar app for business users on the Android platform is the innocuously named aCalendar. Plus, setting reminders for important engagements is a snap. On top of that, aCalendar has a bunch of business-specific features, like the option to schedule a meeting and invite attendees without leaving the app.

    How to Start a Blog and Make Money From It

    If you want to work from home and make money blogging, then you need to have the right tools, resources, and information to guide your way.

    With an overwhelming amount of information on the web it’s often confusing figuring it all out. Listed below are some of the resources that I use, recommend, or that I’ve found helpful on my blogging journey.

    These tools will not only help get you started but they’ll make the process easier so you can start making money faster.

    First, grab my FREE Blogging e-book. it will teach you how to write great content, get tons of traffic to your blog and most importantly, how to make money from it!

    To start the process you ll need to choose a blogging platform; or in technical terms a content management system (CMS). There are many different CMS platforms to choose between, but I highly recommend WordPress. It s ideal for beginners as it s easy to use and modify, it has tons of functionality, and it s free to use all you need to do is purchase your hosting and domain name.

    WordPress is what I use for this site.

    A lot of people ask me about Blogger, Google’s blogging platform. I’ve heard it’s easy to use. But I also know a lot of people who started out on Blogger, but then had to make the switch to WordPress later on. Do yourself a favor and use WordPress from the beginning, you ll save yourself a lot of headaches down the road.

    Once you decided on a blogging platform you ll need to purchase a domain name and hosting. When choosing a hosting company you’ll want to make sure that you get one that’s reliable, affordable, and that has excellent customer service. Right now I m using a virtual private server (VPS) through, Liquid Web. They have a wide variety of hosting plans, which makes it easy to upgrade your service as your site grows. If I weren t using them, I would probably use Bluehost or Synthesis. as they were created with WordPress users in mind. Over the years, I ve had to switch hosting companies three times which is no fun.

    When I first launched my blog, I had a graphic designer create a custom design for me. And while I loved my design it was very expensive! If I were just starting out again, I would use Bluehost with their 1-2-3 easy upload and a template from StudioPress (which is what I m using now). Not only are these templates affordable (like $99), but they look great and they re super easy to modify. To help make your site stand out, I do suggest getting a custom logo designed. If you re launching your blog on a shoestring budget, try Fiverr where freelancers only charge $5 for their services. I haven t used Fiverr for logo design, but I have used them for other sorts of images, and I ve been happy with the results.

    To get traffic to your blog you’ll want to utilize social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Foursquare, Instagram, and Google Plus. Seem overwhelming? To help manage all of these social media platforms, I use HootSuite. I’ve tried other applications, but this one has the most functionality, and it is the easiest to use. You can schedule updates and manage all of your accounts in one place, and best of all it s FREE!

    The one network that you can’t manage from HootSuite is Pinterest. For Pinterest, I use BoardBooster to manage my pins. It s only $5 a month and so worth it! You can schedule pins and re-loop your pins so that they receive maximum exposure.

    To create pin-friendly images for your blog posts, I recommend PicMonkey or Canva. I started out using PicMonkey, which is easy to use, and it gives you professional looking images in a flash. But now I mostly use Canva. It has premade templates and font combos which help me create professional looking images quicker. Each platform is free for basic usage with permeium features costing just a bit more.

    For stock images I use StockFresh and DepositPhotos not only do they have high-quality photos, but they re affordable.

    Part of getting traffic is writing awesome content. To make sure your content is excellent you ll need to edit your posts for punctuation, grammar, and spelling. Now you can do this manually, but I ve found that even when I go back and proofread two or three times I often miss typos. Of course, you can hire an editor to proof your content, but that can get expensive. A more affordable option is to use an editing software or program. I ve tried a few different platforms out and by far my favorite is, Grammarly. It s easy to use and catches errors that word processing programs miss. It also tightens up your copy so you re using an active voice.

    From the first day, you launch your blog you need to make sure that you’re building an email list. SEO rules and social media platforms are constantly changing. But with an email list, it is something that you own, and that can always be used to reach your audience. Personally, I use Constant Contact I love them! They have lots of professional looking templates to choose from, it’s super easy to use, and they have added features like auto-responders. They even offer a FREE 60 trial so you can test them out without any obligation.

    Search Engine Optimization (SEO):

    The majority of my traffic comes from Google, and this is because certain keyword phrases on my site have ranked well with the search engines. Search engine traffic is free, and you’ll want to take advantage of it. I used to recommend Holly Klaassen’s e-book, 50 SEO Secrets for Mom Entrepreneurs, but she s no longer selling it.

    So to get familiarized with SEO here are some useful articles on the basics.

    I have read a ton of blogging books over the years, and these are the ones that have SERIOUSLY helped me on my journey!

    There are so many ways to earn money from your blog, from direct ad sales and ad networks, to affiliate marketing and digital earning so make sure to check out these must-read articles.

    As a career blogger, you ll need to keep meticulous records of your income and expenses. The first year I started out, I made the mistake of keeping all of these transactions in a spreadsheet which made tax time a nightmare. Since then I ve been using GoDaddy Bookkeeping (formerly, Outright) which has simplified the whole process because it automatically updates your transactions from your PayPal and checking account. The online platform is super easy to use, and I highly recommend it for all monetized bloggers.
