Many people dream of owning a business and see it as a way to control their own destiny. Starting a business is an exciting venture that offers many benefits. However, you should also analyze what it takes to run a successful business. Although no special skills are required, running a successful company takes determination, patience and an understanding of business principles. Not fully understanding the advantages and disadvantages of owning your own company may hinder your path toward successful entrepreneurship.

Salary Potential

When you work for an employer, you know your annual salary and little opportunity is available to earn more money on your job. Starting your own business gives you the potential to earn a high salary. Productivity, pricing and marketing plans are all under your control, and the income you earn relates to those activities. Although earning a high salary is not a guarantee, the potential to earn a lucrative income is available.

Do What You Enjoy

Owning a company gives you the opportunity to work in a field you enjoy. Working in an industry you re passionate about helps you better handle down times in your business. Owning your own business allows you to create and contribute, which gives you personal satisfaction. Most entrepreneurs working in a field they enjoy also bring their expertise, which allows them to offer innovative products and services to customers.

Business Control

Entrepreneurship gives you the control over your business. If you operate a sole proprietorship, you make the final management decisions regarding your company. Some individuals thrive in situations where they experience independence. Owning a business gives you the power to control how active you are in the business. You can participate in every step of the decision-making process, or you can hire competent people to make decisions in the best interest of the company.

Demanding Work Schedule

Many business owners work long and erratic hours, and some people view this as a disadvantage. Work schedules are the most grueling for new business owners, because they usually handle time-consuming administrative tasks. The responsibility of running the business ultimately rests upon your shoulders, so you may experience days when you need to stay in the office until the task is complete.

Financial Risks

A disadvantage of owning a business is that you must incur financial risk. Whether you used your own savings or borrowed money for startup costs, the money invested in your company is at risk. Some companies go out of business and cause business owners to lose their initial investment or default on business loans. Even with a solid business plan, economic volatility can cause your business to lose money and eventually close for good.

Liability

Depending on your business structure, creditors and customers may possess the ability to seek your personal assets if you default on your business obligations. If a customer or vendor believes you acted in error, he may file a lawsuit against you. To protect your company’s assets, you can seek liability insurance for your business, but some new business owners may find it difficult to afford insurance premiums.

The Advantages of Owning Your Own Business

Owning your own business

There are thousands of articles cautioning would-be self-employed types about the pitfalls of starting their own businesses, but almost nothing about how great owning your own business is.

One article certainly won t right the balance, but for the benefit of those who are thinking of plunging into the self-employed lifestyle and opening small businesses of their own, here is a summary of the best advantages of owning your own business.

When you own your own business:

1) You re the one in control.

Yep, the be your own boss thing is pretty great. I should lie to you and tell you that that means that no one tells you what to do, but people (customers, suppliers, government workers) will still tell you what to do all the time (and on bad days, might even tell you where to go, too).

The good news is that when you own your own business, you don t have to do what they tell you (most of the time). You have choices and you get to make the decisions.

2) You get to build something.

From one kid who loved Legos to another, you know how satisfying that is. Want to become a multi-national exporter? Or create a program that increases numeracy among children? Or turn people s yards into truly beautiful spaces? When you own your own business, you get to shape and flesh out your dreams.

3) You get to help people.

A TD Canada Trust Small Business Survey found that ninety-six percent of small business owners said that being able to help their customers and clients was one of the top benefits of owning a small business.

Small businesses also help people by creating jobs in their communities and being good community citizens.

4) You may have the option of a more flexible lifestyle.

For women, especially, owning your own business can give the lifestyle flexibility necessary to raise a family and still have a successful career.

Mompreneurs are a growing trend; according to the State-Owned Business Report, commissioned by American Express, the number of women-owned businesses has increased by 68% since 1997, with more than 9.1 million women-owned businesses operating in the U.S. in 2014 (Fox News).

But it s not just young(ish) women who can benefit from this advantage to owning your own business; people who are close to retirement or already retired may find owning their own businesses gives them both the chance to keep their hands in and to do something satisfying. (See The Best Business Opportunities for Retirees if you re of this age and want to get started.)

5) You might change the world.

You certainly don t have to think back very far historically to come up with the name of a business owner whose enterprise has changed the world. Mark Zuckerberg anyone? Bill Gates? And your business doesn t have to become the next Facebook or Microsoft to be the agent of powerful change. Ten years ago, for instance, Torben Vestergaard Frandsen came up with the idea of the LifeStraw, a personal, low-cost water purification tool that is being used to provide safe drinking water to millions of people.

So okay, changing the world is a pretty ambitious target, but changing just a piece of it for the better is still a worthwhile effort that can be deeply satisfying.

6) You might make more money.

Some businesses make truckloads full of money. Some don t. Most successful small businesses provide their owners with a living, not a fortune. But the point is, owning your own business opens up the possibility of making more than you could possibly make as an employee.

Working on the assembly line that produces cat clocks will bring you in a certain wage but what if, for example, there s a huge surge of demand for cat clocks and the company s profits soar astronomically? As an employee, you won t share in any of those profits. Businesses generally have much more opportunity to make money than individuals do.

Other Advantages of Owning Your Own Business

The advantages of owning your own business listed above apply to all businesses with the caveat that those who choose to run retail businesses will find it more difficult to create a flexible lifestyle because of the demands of retail trade.

The 100 Startup, start business ideas.#Start #business #ideas

Start business ideas

Imagine a life where all your time is spent on the things you want to do.

Imagine handing a letter to your boss that reads, “Dear Boss, I’m writing to let you know that your services are no longer required. Thanks for everything, but I’ll be doing things my own way now.”

Imagine that today is your final day of working for anyone other than yourself. What if—very soon, not in some distant, undefined future—you prepare for work by firing up a laptop in your home office, walking into a storefront you’ve opened, phoning a client who trusts you for helpful advice, or otherwise doing what you want instead of what someone tells you to do?

All over the world, and in many different ways, thousands of people are doing exactly that. They are rewriting the rules of work, becoming their own bosses, and creating a new future.

Start business ideas

In The $100 Startup, Chris Guillebeau shows you how to lead a life of adventure, meaning and purpose — and earn a good living.

Still in his early thirties, Chris is on the verge of completing a tour of every country on earth — he s already visited more than 175 nations — and yet he s never held a real job or earned a regular paycheck. Rather, he has a special genius for turning ideas into income, and he uses what he earns both to support his life of adventure and to give back.

There are many others like Chris — those who ve found ways to opt out of traditional employment and create the time and income to pursue what they find meaningful. Sometimes, achieving that perfect blend of passion and income doesn t depend on shelving what you currently do. You can start small with your venture, committing little time or money, and wait to take the real plunge when you re sure it s successful.

In preparing to write this book, Chris identified 1,500 individuals who have built businesses earning $50,000 or more from a modest investment (in many cases, $100 or less), and from that group he s chosen to focus on the 50 most intriguing case studies. In nearly all cases, people with no special skills discovered aspects of their personal passions that could be monetized, and were able to restructure their lives in ways that gave them greater freedom and fulfillment.

Here, finally, distilled into one easy-to-use guide, are the most valuable lessons from those who ve learned how to turn what they do into a gateway to self-fulfillment. It s all about finding the intersection between your expertise — even if you don t consider it such — and what other people will pay for.

You don t need an MBA, a business plan or even employees. All you need is a product or service that springs from what you love to do anyway, people willing to pay, and a way to get paid

Not content to talk in generalities, Chris tells you exactly how many dollars his group of unexpected entrepreneurs required to get their projects up and running; what these individuals did in the first weeks and months to generate significant cash; some of the key mistakes they made along the way, and the crucial insights that made the business stick. Among Chris s key principles: if you re good at one thing, you re probably good at something else; never teach a man to fish — sell him the fish instead; and in the battle between planning and action, action wins.

In ancient times, people who were dissatisfied with their lives dreamed of finding magic lamps, buried treasure, or streets paved with gold. Today, we know that it s up to us to change our lives. And the best part is, if we change our own life, we can help others change theirs. This remarkable book will start you on your way.

Business Grants, Government Grant, business grants.#Business #grants

    Business Grants

    Business grants

During tough times businesses are encouraged to seek out and obtain a temporary business loan or business grant in order to receive grant money that they do not have to repay.

Starting or growing a business can be a costly undertaking and usually requires a great deal of cash. While there are a variety of ways to raise capital for your business venture, these can be both time consuming and difficult depending on the funds required. The US government and private organizations set aside millions of dollars every year through business loans and grants that help companies get started, increase their trade and stay afloat in hard times.

In times of financial hardship the last thing the federal government wants is for businesses to fail. This starts a domino effect that means job loss, decreased consumer spending and a flagging economy as well as a significant decrease in taxable dollars. These grants are targeted at future business owners, new businesses and established businesses. During tough times businesses are encouraged to seek out and obtain a temporary business loan or business grant in order to receive grant money that they do not have to repay.

    The Opportunity Fund

The Opportunity Fund is specifically for business owners in the Northern and Southern California areas. The Opportunity fund is the largest non-profit source of microloans and microfinancing in California as well as financing for commercial real estate ventures. Since 1995 they have invested over $200 million in small businesses and handed out almost $20 million in small business loans to businesses in need.

    The Opportunity Fund Loan Details

    • Small and micro loans from $2,500 $100,000
    • Fixed Interest Rates 8% 12%
    • Loan Terms 1 – 5 years

Visit the official website for The Opportunity Fund to see if you qualify.

Those who are not located in the qualifying areas may qualify for similar types of grants in their areas, and they can be found by doing an online search. They can also ask people they know if they are aware of any non-profit organizations that are offering funds to owners of small businesses in a program such as the Opportunity Fund.

The “Love a Local Business” Competition

The Love a Local Business Grant Competition gives customers and employees alike a chance to reward their favorite businesses by nominating them for this grant. This competition has awarded over $1.1 million to small businesses with just one business winning $25,000 in a hiring grant. This grant is NOT available all year round and you should check Love Our Local Business Competition homepage to see if the grant is currently available

    Small Business Association

The Small Business Administration, or SBA, is a United States government agency, funded by tax dollars, that offers guidance and loan programs to entrepreneurs and small businesses. In the United States, for SBA purposes, small businesses are defined as those having less than 250 categories. Caps on revenue to meet the definition vary by industry, for example, non-manufacturing companies with revenues of under $7 million dollars qualify as small.

Under the loan guarantee program, the maximum amount that can be borrowed is $5 million dollars. Another financing scheme from the SBA is the traditional fixed asset loan, which also have a cap of five million. This is a more traditional type of loan where companies borrow money to hard assets for their businesses, like equipment, vehicles or property.

The SBA is not a direct lender, but these loans are administered through authorized non-profits in a business community. Access to the non-profits can be obtained by contacting your local, or nearest SBA office.

    State Agencies and Local Agencies

People will not necessarily find a federal program that offers them general funds for their small businesses, but they may find them at the state agencies and local agencies in their areas. One example is a low-interest loan. People can find out how they can apply for these low-interest loans by contacting the economic development agency in their states.

    The United States Government

If people can meet requirements for specific programs, they can apply for federal grant money. For example, if they are developing a “green” product, they may be able to find a federal grant that is funding this type of research. Search our grants database for programs that are appropriate for your business.

Entrepreneurs have many other ways that they can obtain the money they need than just applying for grants. For more small business resources check out our Grant Resources page.

Nine jobs that humans may lose to robots

    Business careers

Are humans becoming obsolete in the workforce? All signs point to “yes.”

As IBM’s Watson proved on Jeopardy, robots are becoming smarter than people. They also make fewer mistakes and they don’t get bored.

By 2013 there will be 1.2 million industrial robots working worldwide — that’s one robot for every 5,000 people, according to Marshall Brain, founder of How Stuff Works and author of Robotic Nation.

Robots are currently analyzing documents, filling prescriptions, and handling other tasks that were once exclusively done by humans.

    Business careers

The next time you drop off a prescription order, you might see a robot behind the counter.

The UCSF Medical Center recently launched an automated, robotics-controlled pharmacy at two UCSF hospitals.

Once computers at the new pharmacy electronically receive medication orders from UCSF physicians and pharmacists, the robotics pick, package, and dispense individual doses of pills.

Machines assemble doses onto a thin plastic ring that contains all the medications for a patient for a 12-hour period, which is bar-coded.

The pharmacy system, which was phased in over the past year, so far has prepared 350,000 doses of medication without error.

This fall, nurses at UCSF Medical Center will begin to use barcode readers to scan the medication at patients’ bedsides, verifying it is the correct dosage for the patient. The automated system also compounds sterile preparations of chemotherapy and non-chemotherapy doses and fills IV syringes or bags with the medications.

    Lawyers and paralegals

    Business careers

Instead of paying an army of lawyers and paralegals to review documents, software can do the job in a fraction of the time for a fraction of the cost.

The New York Times reported that Blackstone Discovery of Palo Alto, CA provided software that helped analyze 1.5 million documents for less than $100,000.

“From a legal staffing viewpoint, it means that a lot of people who used to be allocated to conduct document review are no longer able to be billed out,” Bill Herr, a lawyer, tells the New York Times. “People get bored, people get headaches. Computers don’t.”

    Business careers

Google announced last fall that it was working on automated cars as a way to increase safety and help humans reduce the time spent commuting to work.

With human supervisors in the passenger seat, seven test cars have driven 1,000 miles without human intervention and more than 140,000 miles with only occasional human control.

“Our automated cars, manned by trained operators, just drove from our Mountain View campus to our Santa Monica office and on to Hollywood Boulevard,” said Google engineer Sebastian Thrun. “They’ve driven down Lombard Street, crossed the Golden Gate bridge, navigated the Pacific Coast Highway, and even made it all the way around Lake Tahoe.”

    Business careers

Through a partnership with General Motors, NASA’s Robonaut2 is the latest example of android technology. Equipped with a wide array of sensors and dexterous five fingered hands, it will initially handle menial jobs such as cleaning the spacestation and assisting humans in space operations.

However, it could one day venture outside the station to help spacewalkers make repairs or perform scientific work, according to NASA.

    Business careers

Companies are increasingly looking for ways to sell more products with fewer employees. ATM machines reduce the need for bank tellers, virtual assistants can answer the phone 24 hours a day, and self-service machines are reducing the need for checkout clerks.

Retail employment has barely budged over the last year despite stronger sales at major chains. Meanwhile, $740 billion was transacted through self-service machines in 2010, up 9 percent from 2009, reported the Los Angeles Times. That number is projected to rise to $1.1 trillion by 2014.

    Business careers

Although soldiers have yet to be replaced by an army of robots, we seem to be moving in that direction as drones and other machines are increasingly being used in reconnaissance and combat missions.

One example is the the MAARS (Modular Advanced Armed Robotic System), made by Foster-Miller, which has provided armed robots in Iraq. According to Wired, the robot is equipped with a GPS monitor; it can be programmed to differentiate between fire and no-fire zones, to open doors, and even to drag out injured bodies.

    Business careers

If there’s anything we’ve learned from Hollywood, it’s that robots are not only deadly weapons, they are also great for entertainment.

Aeon Co., a major Japanese retailer, introduced a four-foot-tall yellow and white robot at a store in 2008 whose job is to babysit children while the adults shop.

Other models include the Hello Kitty robot, which is perfect for “whoever does not have a lot time to stay with child,” according to a vendor and NEC’s PaPeRo robot, which tells jokes, gives quizzes, and can track kids using a radio-frequency identification chip.

    Business careers

Robots can reach areas that are inaccessible to humans and provide crucial help in rescuing victims from natural disasters. Scientists such as Satoshi Tadokoro of Tohoku University, based in Sendai, have offered the use of their robots to assist in the rescue efforts that are underway in Japan.

Tadokoro has offered the use of a snakelike robot that can enter tight spaces and use a camera to survey them, which could be helpful in collapsed buildings.

For now, the most useful robots could be aerial drones that can provide aerial inspections or ROV’s, which can help locate underwater objects and determine the condition of bridges and pipelines, according to the Center for Robot-Assisted Search and Rescue at Texas A ?>

    • Set your thermostat a few degrees lower in the winter and a few degrees higher in the summer to save on heating and cooling costs.
    • Install compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) when your older incandescent bulbs burn out.
    • Unplug appliances when you re not using them. Or, use a smart power strip that senses when appliances are off and cuts phantom or vampire energy use.
    • Wash clothes in cold water whenever possible. As much as 85 percent of the energy used to machine-wash clothes goes to heating the water.
    • Use a drying rack or clothesline to save the energy otherwise used during machine drying.
  • Save water to save money.

    • Take shorter showers to reduce water use. This will lower your water and heating bills too.
    • Install a low-flow showerhead. They don t cost much, and the water and energy savings can quickly pay back your investment.
    • Make sure you have a faucet aerator on each faucet. These inexpensive appliances conserve heat and water, while keeping water pressure high.
    • Plant drought-tolerant native plants in your garden. Many plants need minimal watering. Find out which occur naturally in your area.

    • Walk or bike to work. This saves on gas and parking costs while improving your cardiovascular health and reducing your risk of obesity.
    • Consider telecommuting if you live far from your work. Or move closer. Even if this means paying more rent, it could save you money in the long term.
    • Lobby your local government to increase spending on sidewalks and bike lanes. With little cost, these improvements can pay huge dividends in bettering your health and reducing traffic.
    • If you eat meat, add one meatless meal a week. Meat costs a lot at the store-and it s even more expensive when you consider the related environmental and health costs.
    • Buy locally raised, humane, and organic meat, eggs, and dairy whenever you can. Purchasing from local farmers keeps money in the local economy.
    • Watch videos about why local food and sustainable seafood are so great.
    • Whatever your diet, eat low on the food chain [pdf]. This is especially true for seafood.

    Skip the bottled water.

    • Use a water filter to purify tap water instead of buying bottled water. Not only is bottled water expensive, but it generates large amounts of container waste.
    • Bring a reusable water bottle, preferably aluminum rather than plastic, with you when traveling or at work.
    • Check out this short article for the latest on bottled water trends.
  • Think before you buy.

    • Go online to find new or gently used secondhand products. Whether you ve just moved or are looking to redecorate, consider a service like craigslist or FreeSharing to track down furniture, appliances, and other items cheaply or for free.
    • Check out garage sales, thrift stores, and consignment shops for clothing and other everyday items.
    • Watch a video about what happens when you buy things. Your purchases have a real impact, for better or worse.
  • Borrow instead of buying.

    • Borrow from libraries instead of buying personal books and movies. This saves money, not to mention the ink and paper that goes into printing new books.
    • Share power tools and other appliances. Get to know your neighbors while cutting down on the number of things cluttering your closet or garage.

    Green business ideas

    Great for classrooms:

    • Buy in bulk. Purchasing food from bulk bins can save money and packaging.
    • Wear clothes that don t need to be dry-cleaned. This saves money and cuts down on toxic chemical use.
    • Invest in high-quality, long-lasting products. You might pay more now, but you ll be happy when you don t have to replace items as frequently (and this means less waste!).
  • Keep electronics out of the trash.

    • Keep your cell phones, computers, and other electronics as long as possible.
    • Donate or recycle them responsibly when the time comes. E-waste contains mercury and other toxics and is a growing environmental problem.
    • Recycle your cell phone.
    • Ask your local government to set up an electronics recycling and hazardous waste collection event.

    Make your own cleaning supplies.

    • The big secret: you can make very effective, non-toxic cleaning products whenever you need them. All you need are a few simple ingredients like baking soda, vinegar, lemon, and soap.
    • Making your own cleaning products saves money, time, and packaging-not to mention your indoor air quality.

GE shifts strategy, financial targets for digital business after missteps

NEW YORK (Reuters) – General Electric Co wants its industrial software business to cut costs and lift profits next year under new chief executive John Flannery, and is considering expanded partnerships and the possible sale of some equity in the unit, according to people familiar with the business.

Former chief executive Jeffrey Immelt spent six years and more than $4 billion transforming 125-year-old GE into a digital industrial company. But GE has had technical problems and delays with its software platform, known as Predix, which connects equipment like turbines and elevators to computers that can predict failures and reduce operating costs.

This spring, GE called an unusual, two month time-out to tackle the Predix problems, which have not been previously reported. With fixes in place, GE will now emphasize sales to existing customers in its energy, aviation and oil-and-gas businesses, and scale back efforts to sell to new customers in other sectors, three senior GE executives told Reuters.

Our resources will go to our fastest-selling markets, GE Digital Chief Executive Officer Bill Ruh said in an interview.

To help investors better understand Predix, GE also has redefined digital revenue to exclude $3 billion in hardware related to its gas-fueled power plants, providing a clearer picture of the pure software business and avoiding double-counting, Chief Financial Officer Jeff Bornstein said.

The company now expects $12 billion in digital revenue in 2020, compared with $15 billion under the old definition. GE s total revenue hit nearly $124 billion last year.

The changes mark an important course correction for GE Digital, which so far has not delivered the revenue investors wanted and is partly responsible for a 25 percent decline in GE s share price this year to a near two-year low.

GE estimates the industrial internet market will be worth $225 billion a year by 2020, and Flannery, who became CEO on Aug. 1, appears committed to Immelt s vision of being a major player, according to two people familiar with his thinking.

But the 55-year-old leader, known for finance skills and making tough decisions, is likely to press GE Digital to reduce costs and lift profits next year. He also may restructure how GE Digital operates, bring in more partners and possibly sell a minority stake in the unit, they told Reuters.

There was a lot of money spent on Predix, said a former senior financial executive at GE who worked with Flannery. They are going to tighten the grip and ensure there s a return.

GE declined to comment on Flannery s plans.

Immelt was among the first executives to spot the industrial internet wave nearly a decade ago, and positioning the company to catch it became one of his signature strategic moves in his 16 year term as chief executive.

This is an all-encompassing change, Immelt said last year, as GE increased its digital investment.

Analysts and investors see potential for Predix to deliver substantial sales and profits. It already has attracted some large customers, including power utility Exelon Corp and elevator maker Schindler Holding AG, and orders rose 24 percent to $2.3 billion in the first half of 2017.

But some analysts and investors say the business has taken longer than expected to mature, and its current growth rate is too slow to hit GE s $12 billion target by 2020. Spending also soared under Immelt, which weighed on profits.

He gave Bill Ruh an endless checkbook, Nick Heymann, an analyst at William Blair Co., said of Immelt.

Case in point: GE has budgeted $700 million more in digital spending this year – to a total of $2.1 billion – to further develop Predix and its applications, and to boost sales efforts. GE executives noted this is likely to mark the peak for digital investment.

GE Digital Chief Financial Officer Khozema Shipchandler said the 2020 revenue target is within reach since recurring Predix subscriptions pile on significant revenue as time goes on.

    FIXING PREDIX

Immelt pushed GE to go digital sooner than other companies. But some early missteps cost time and money as GE s strategy evolved. Engineers initially advised building data centers that would house the Predix Cloud. But after Amazon.com Inc and Microsoft Corp spent tens of billions of dollars on data centers for their cloud services, AWS and Azure, GE changed course.

That is not an investment we can compete with, Ruh said.

GE abandoned its go-it-alone cloud strategy a year ago. It now relies on AWS and expects to be using Azure by late October, four months behind schedule, the executives said.

As GE pivoted away from building data centers, its engineers focused on applications, which executives now saw as more useful for winning business and more profitable than the platform alone.

That is probably the biggest lesson we ve learned, Ruh said.

GE also faced legacy challenges in adapting to Predix software. GE has many algorithms for monitoring its machines, but they mostly were written in different coding languages and reside on other systems in GE businesses. This makes transferring them to Predix more time consuming, people familiar with the system told Reuters.

The acquisition of Meridium and ServiceMax over the past 10 months gave GE well-known applications and added about $150 million to annual digital revenue, GE said. But the new products also brought more code that had to be converted to run on Predix, people familiar with the systems said.

The result: software installation sometimes took much longer than GE anticipated, the code had bugs and applications sometimes lacked features that customers wanted, these people said.

GE executives acknowledged Predix had experienced technical problems and was behind schedule in hitting some goals. During the time out in May and June, GE Digital s programmers made Predix more stable, they said.

The changes in strategy have come with a change in leadership. Predix chief Harel Kodesh and GE Digital Chief Commercial Officer Kate Johnson both left this year. Patrick Franklin, who succeeded Kodesh, called the time out to fix Predix.

Ruh said the leadership evolved with the business and that GE has the right people to keep Predix growing.

    RIVALS TAKE AIM

The competition is not standing still. Large rivals such as Siemens AG and a crop of nimble startups are pressing to gain market share in GE s main areas of energy, aviation, locomotives, health care and oil and gas.

Chicago-based startup Uptake signed a deal in March with subsidiaries of Berkshire Hathaway Energy to provide analytics on thousands of wind turbines, including those made by GE. C3 IoT, based in Redwood City, California, won a deal last year with French utility Engie SA, a GE customer. Engie later signed a digital partnership agreement with GE.

Stewart Stevenson, a maker of fracking pumps and other equipment, met with GE about Predix in 2015 but quickly decided against it.

They didn t seem to be able to customize to meet the needs of our customers, said Chris Harvell, the firm s chief technology officer. And if they did do any development, we d probably end up paying quite a bit of money.

The company chose Flutura, a 100-person, Houston firm started in 2012, for a pilot. Flutura lacked GE s scale, but could easily produce custom code, he said.

Ruh said that while GE faces competitors in every deal, many startups are not true competitors because Predix includes unique applications and is available globally.

No other competitor has these capabilities on their platforms, he said.

Inside GE, executives remain bullish. Predix will pay off handsomely if GE stays focused on building it and winning customers, said Joshua Bloom, co-founder and chief technology officer of Wise.io, an artificial intelligence firm GE bought last year.

But, he said, “doing that right and at scale is a massive challenge.

    • Because you KNOW you’re supposed to be making a HUGE difference in the world, and instead you’re playing “small” or slaving away working for someone else. What do you need to do to start playing the bigger game you know you’re meant to?
    • That you can’t seem to earn the sort of salary you think you deserve, or charge clients what you think you are worth, and therefore are barely scraping by.
    • Because you are having difficulty getting and keeping clients. What could you do to attract and keep more clients?
    • That YOU ARE YOUR BRAND, and not enough people have heard of YOU. Wouldn’t it be nice to have a brand name behind you. A brand name that people automatically knew, respected and that opened doors to new possibilities and clients?
    • That your coaching certification hasn’t opened the doors you thought it would.

Then I have the SOLUTION for you. That is, if you qualify to become a part of my team.

In early summer of 2015 the Wall Street Journal and others reported that the home ownership rate in the U.S. had hit a 48-year low. And the reported home ownership rate – not seasonally adjusted – of a little over 63% is the lowest homeownership rate in this country since 1967 – almost 50 years ago! What’s up? Economists fear it could mean incomes are not keeping pace with the increase in home prices. So young people are having a harder time buying their first home. It may also be that some people are still recovering from the collapse in home values and resulting foreclosures. We would suggest that many people may be unaware of the deals and programs out there for homebuyers.

The government loves to encourage home ownership. There s plenty of news and promises about Government Grants To Purchase A Home – are they for real? Government agencies like Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and Federal Housing Authority (FHA) have many resources to help you buy a home. The latest is a program that lets you get into a new house with just 3% down … and some organizations will even contribute to that amount!

Did your home recently sustain damages in a natural disaster? Whether or not, every home needs continous upgrades and repairs. Grants For Home Repair can come from federal agencies (even the USDA), state programs, public utilities, private foundations, and other non-profit agencies. In fact there s a new non-profit created by Congress to help specifically with issues like Home Repair.

Finding money for a small business can be frustrating. We can t all take a company public or receive millions in funding from Venture Capitalists. Money is out there but it s in places you might not expect. Small Business Financing Opportunities describes all these as well as legislation that helps you.

Small business is so important that in 1953, a new agency, the Small Business Administration (SBA.gov), was developed to support entrepreneurs and small business. The administration has a budget of over half a billion dollars and focuses on capital, contracts, and counseling.

Free money for school is more than a dream. Determine your eligibility in two minutes to see if you Qualify for a Pell Grant. There s no competition for pell grants but funds are first come, first serve. If you qualify, as much as $5,730 is available for the 2014-2015 school year.

Every year current and prospective students should complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. Completing this free application is one of the required steps to receive a pell grant. Though it gets a bit personal, the benefits are well worth it. Scholarships, loans and aid are unlocked with the FAFSA.

    Business Grants

Grants for Business gives you a big-picture view of where and how to look for money for your business. There is more out there than you realize. A special $30 billion fund created to encourage more loans for small business is just an example.

For more specialized resources, Fund A Startup Business can help get your first business up and running. It reviews both traditional and newer, creative possibilities specific to a new venture. Words like crowdfunding and micro-financing may not have been around for long, but they – and others – are creating opportunities for entrepreneurs.

If you are an African American starting or growing your own business, Black Business Resources are available for you. Many agencies and private companies have new programs to increase the number and success of minority-run businesses. Women are also holding more and more top executive positions and starting new businesses at a fast rate. Find out more in Grants For Women-Owned Business.

    Federal Aid

Are you sitting there thinking, ”I Need Help”? Sometimes you don t have the time to wait for lots of paperwork to get handled. It s still up to you to make the effort, but there s help available in places you may not have looked. If you wish there were Grants to Pay Bills then continue reading.

The government gives out literally billions in assistance each year. It s important – and right – that you be sure you are receiving whatever you should be according to the law. Federal Assistance in the United States will help you understand – and get – all that is available.

The ultimate in “free money” is unclaimed money because it s money that is already yours. Examples are old bank accounts, utility deposits, and dividends you didn t get because you moved, and so much more. The states hold onto billions of it – and make money off it! General Business Liability Insurance – How it Works and What Coverage is

General Business Liability Insurance – How it Works and What Coverage is Right for You

If you’ve heard it once, you’ve heard it a thousand times: if you’re starting a business you’re going to need general liability insurance. But what does that mean? What protection does it afford? How do you determine your coverage needs? How does it work?

    What is General Liability Insurance?

Liability insurance (also known as Commercial General Business Liability) protects a company’s assets and pays for obligations – medical costs, for example –incurred if someone gets hurt on your property or when there are property damages or injuries caused by you or your employees. Liability insurance also covers the cost of your legal defense and any settlement or award should you be successfully sued. Typically these include compensatory damages, nonmonetary losses suffered by the injured party, and punitive damages.

General liability insurance can also protect you against any liability as a tenant if you cause damage to a property that you rent, such as by fire or other covered loss.

Finally, it can also cover claims of false or misleading advertising, including libel, slander, and copyright infringement.

Does your Business Need Liability Insurance?

We live in a litigious society and even if you think you’re unlikely to face a claim, getting insurance is a wise investment that doesn’t cost much – annual premiums range from $750 to $2,000 depending on your line of business and coverage needs. That’s certainly a lot less than the thousands, if not millions, of dollars you may need to spend fighting your case in court.

General liability insurance can be purchased on its own, but it can also be included as part of a Business Owner’s Policy (BOP) which bundles liability and property insurance into one policy. If you have a BOP, check it to see what your liability coverage limit is. You may find that it is quite low, in which case you may need additional coverage through a separate policy.

How to Determine Your Coverage Needs

The coverage you need depends on the type of business you are in and the perceived risk associated with it. For example, a building contractor will need more coverage than a web designer or consultant. Your business location is also another factor that comes into play. For example, some states tend to award more in damages to plaintiffs claiming personal injury than others. Talk to a licensed insurance broker for advice on this before you rush out and buy a policy.

As mentioned above, if you fall into the lower risk category, you may want to consider a Business Owner’s Policy (BOP) which combines general liability and property insurance at a cost-effective rate.

Confused about where to start? Take a look at SBA’s Five Tips for Buying Business Insurance which includes tips on assessing your risk, shopping around, BOPs, and maintenance of your policy.

    How General Liability Insurance Works

As with many insurance plans, your general liability policy will outline the maximum amount the insurance company will pay against a liability claim. So, if your small business gets sued for $250,000 for medical costs associated with an injury caused by a worksite hazard, plus an additional $100,000 in legal fees, but your coverage maxes out at $300,000, then you are responsible for paying the difference of $50,000.

If you are on the higher end of the risk scale and already have general liability insurance, you can also opt for excess insurance or umbrella insurance that increases your coverage limits. This will cover you in situations in which you’re worried that your existing coverage won’t cover all your costs should someone file and win a claim against you.

Be sure to do your industry research before you invest in any policy. Sometimes a client contract will require that your business has the appropriate coverage or umbrella insurance to perform work on their behalf. Likewise, some construction contractors may add you to their general liability policy as an additional name to be insured for the duration of the project.

If an incident occurs that may lead to a claim, you should notify your insurance company or agent immediately. Be prepared to explain what has happened in detail including the time, date, the names of any witnesses, and any other pertinent information.

What other Insurance do I Need?

Besides general liability insurance, most states also require that businesses with employees pay workers’ compensation insurance and state disability insurance. For specific requirements, read more about Insurance Requirements for Employers.

Depending on the nature of your business, you may also need auto insurance, home business insurance, alcohol liability insurance (if you sell or serve alcohol), product liability insurance, environmental and pollution insurance, and more. Read more about small business insurance requirements.

Women and visible minorities who own their own businesses may be eligible for a variety of grants. Learn how to find them and apply for them.

Women and visible minorities can take advantage of grants offered by private institutions and, less often, government agencies. The key to winning a grant is ensuring that your business goals are aligned with the purpose of the grant and that you submit a professional application. With a bit of study and practice, however, you can gain confidence and hone your grant-writing skills, allowing you to tap into the resources of organizations that promote female and minority entrepreneurship.

Select specific grant programs that match your business and personal situation. Take note of each granting organization’s name and contact information, and compile a list of all grants for which you are eligible. Select a range of options – grants for women only, minorities only or both – if you are both a woman and a part of a minority group; this will give you a wider range of possibilities. Begin your search at Grants.gov for federal funding, and SRA International or Business Owners’ Idea Cafe for private funding sources (see Resources).

Research the granting organization thoroughly. Visit its website and read any news articles or press releases related to the organization. Look into the types of organizations and projects that the organization funds, and research specific grant-winners, if possible. Focus on the exact purpose of the awarded grants. Grants may be awarded purely to promote female and minority entrepreneurship, for example, or they may be granted to organizations whose programs directly benefit women and minorities in general.

Contact the granting organization and ask for guidance in preparing your grant proposal. Ask a representative to speak with you about the grant proposal process, explaining such things as preferred submission formats and length, the organization’s specific areas of interest and any other grant opportunities for women and minorities that may be available. Keep your new contact’s name and information as you did with the notes you took in step one.

Create your grant proposal. The proposal should include a description of your organization, including its mission and product offerings, and a needs assessment that clearly explains the need your company serves. Focus specifically on how your organization will promote the goals of the organization that offers the grant.

Create a thorough description of your products, services and business model, and include it in your grant proposal. Add a budget, projected financial statements and a detailed summary of how you plan to spend the grant money. End the proposal with professional biographies of yourself and your top-management team. List the names of any women or minority associations or groups of which you are a member.

Trump tax cuts: Lower rates for individuals and businesses – Apr, new

Trump calls for dramatic tax cuts for individuals and businesses

    New businesses

The Trump administration has finally outlined its new tax proposal, which leans heavily on tax cuts.

So far, President Trump wants to slash individual tax rates — cutting the top rate from 39.6% to 35% — and reduce the number of total rates from seven to three. He also wants to cut the top tax rate for all businesses to 15%, far below the current top rates.

The administration’s tax outline still leaves many questions unanswered and will be met with a lot of skepticism among lawmakers, even though Republicans control Congress. In fact, some GOP aides suggest that the White House — with its emphasis on tax cuts and too few details on how they’d be paid for — is not constructively contributing to a serious discussion of tax reform.

“It’s not tax reform,” one senior GOP aide told CNN. “Not even close.”

Here’s what we know so far about the president’s tax proposal.

Lower individual income tax rates: The proposal calls for reducing the number of tax brackets from seven to three for individuals, which would be set at 10%, 25% and 35%. Today’s rates are 10%, 15%, 25%, 28%, 33%, 35% and 39.6%.

But here’s the thing: The White House has yet to specify how much of one’s income would apply to each of the three rates that Trump is proposing. So it’s impossible to say what the change would mean in dollars and cents for anyone.

During the campaign, Trump had originally called for those rates to be 10% 20% and 25%. He later amended his plan, calling for somewhat higher rates to match what House Republicans have been calling for: 12%, 25% and 33%.

The proposal also calls for doubling the standard deduction.

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said Wednesday morning that the new tax proposal will offer “the biggest tax cut and the largest tax reform in the history of this country.” Without greater detail from the White House, that’s impossible to verify.

Much lower business rates: Trump wants to slash the top tax rate for all businesses to 15%, as he proposed during the campaign. That’s well below the top rate of 35% for corporations today, although the real top rate they pay is less after tax breaks.

A drop to 15% would also be a huge drop from the 39.6% top rate paid by owners and shareholders of so-called pass-through businesses. Those run the gamut from mom-and-pop shops to law firms and hedge funds. In a pass-through business, the owners and shareholders report profits on their personal tax returns.

One-time tax on overseas profits: The president will call for a low, one-time tax on the $2.6 trillion of profits that were earned overseas by U.S. multinational corporations and were technically never brought back to the United States.

Switch to a territorial tax system: Today, U.S. companies must pay tax on all their profits, regardless of where in the world those profits are earned.

Trump now joins Republicans who want to switch to a territorial system for businesses. That would mean U.S. companies would only owe U.S. tax on what they earn in the United States.

No border adjustment tax as proposed: Trump is not expected to back a controversial provision known as the border adjustment tax that was proposed by House Republicans.

“We don’t think it works in its current form, and we will have discussions with [House tax writers] about revisions,” Mnuchin said Wednesday morning at an event held by The Hill.

A border adjustment tax would fundamentally alter how imports and exports are taxed. Under the House plan, companies could no longer deduct the cost of their imported goods, and sales of their exports would no longer be subject to U.S. tax.

Such a provision could raise more than $1 trillion over a decade, which the House GOP was counting on to help offset the cost of their proposed rate cuts.

Trump has been a proponent of a selective import tax — and has suggested he might favor a “reciprocal” tax. But he has yet to explain what that means.

Tax break for child care costs: An outline of the plan calls for tax relief for child care costs, but doesn’t give much detail.

During the campaign, Trump called for two tax breaks to help ease families’ child care costs. One would let parents deduct the average cost of child care in their state, based on their child’s age.

The other would give a tax break to anyone who sets aside up to $2,000 a year to cover costs associated with child care and elder care.

The contributions would be tax deductible, then grow tax free.

Tax and child care policy experts have said both breaks, as proposed, would disproportionately benefit wealthier families. And in the case of millions of low- and middle-income families, the breaks could raise their tax burden when combined with Trump’s other proposals to eliminate head of household status, repeal personal exemptions and raise the lowest income tax rate to 12% from 10% currently.

Eliminate most deductions: Trump is now aligning himself with House Republicans, by calling for the elimination of all deductions except those for mortgage interest and charitable contributions.

Originally he’d called for a cap on itemized deductions.

Repeal a string of taxes: As he did during the election, Trump will call for the repeal of the Alternative Minimum Tax, the estate tax and the 3.8% Medicare surtax that applies to wages and investments above a certain level.

CNN’s Jeff Zeleny, Jim Acosta and Phil Mattingly contributed to this report

    What is public liability insurance?

If you are running a business, public liability insurance protects you if a member of the public suffers an injury or if any of their property is damaged because of your business. It will cover legal costs and any compensation claims if your business is found to be at fault.

What does public liability insurance cover?

For injuries to a third party or damage to their property, whether an incident takes place on your business premises, a customer’s premises or elsewhere.

Should a claim be made against you, cover will be provided to help you cover the cost of any legal proceedings.

The cost of repairing damage (for example, to a client’s carpets if you are a plumber and do something in the course of your work which causes a flood).

The cost of hospital treatment (including the cost of calling out an ambulance), if the NHS chooses to claim against you.

Read our public liability FAQs page for information on what’s not covered.

Do I need public liability insurance?

Unlike employers’ liability insurance, public liability insurance is not a legal requirement. However, it is considered an essential among business owners, and in some professions you may find it impossible to trade without it.

    • Accidents that happen to you.
    • Damage to your own property or accidents that affect your employees or their possessions.
    • Incidents like these should be covered under your generalbusiness insurancepolicy and / or your employers’ liability insurance policy, which is a legal requirement.

What else do I need to know about public liability insurance?

First and foremost, it’s important to note that the complete cost of any claim you need to make under public liability cover is unlikely to be met by your insurer. You are likely to have to pay an excess at a level agreed when you first set up your policy – for example, the first £250 or £500 of any claim.

As a general rule of thumb, if you opt for a higher excess the price of your public liability insurance premium may come down – but it’s important to be sure you could genuinely afford to pay the excess in the event of a crisis.

How can I compare public liability insurance deals?

As with any form of insurance, it’s important to compare a variety of public liability insurance policies from different providers before buying. Check the levels of protection on offer as well as the annual premiums, and consider carefully where you should set your excess.

MoneySuperMarket’s public liability insurance comparison channel will help you gather a selection of quotes within minutes, to help you find the best deal for you.

Create an executive summary after all other sections are done and place it at the beginning of the grant proposal document.

Submit your grant proposal to your contact or designated recipient in the granting organization. Follow all format and submission instructions when sending in your proposal, and include a brief cover letter introducing yourself and your company, while thanking the grant reviewers for their time.

Ask your contact in the granting organization if members of the grant proposal review committee would be willing to look over your proposal and provide feedback before the submission deadline. It never hurts to ask, and this could provide invaluable insight and increase your chances of receiving a grant.

Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Michael, and welcome to the fascinating world of astrology and the place to read your free horoscopes! For years, decades and centuries human-kind has turned to the heavens, God’s handiwork, for answers and guidance in their lives! Older then most major religions, the zodiac caught my interest early on, as did horoscopes, and I have been studying them since my youth. I started out doing it for fun, then later realized I had an uncanny knack for this science. Almost to the point of total obsession, I worked and studied at it, hand calculating charts,(computers were not available to me back then) pouring over old books, learning along with some of the best in the field, I reached a point where I became what can be considered a master (Or so I am told :).

What sets this site apart from other astrology sites is the unique free horoscopes.

When Internet technology became available to me personally some sixteen years ago, I discovered a way to share my knowledge with the world. Some of you maybe familiar with some of my earlier works, such as Traditional Astrology or Astro’s Astrology . Today, this website, Astrology Online, is my primary focus. If you enjoy reading the stars and planets as much as I, or if you are just getting started, then this my friend is the place to be!

When I started writing free horoscopes for astrology online..

I was getting offers to have it published on many other sites, asn well as in hard print. The popularity grew, and today Astrology Online’s free horoscopes are one of the most popular places on the internet. And for that, I thank you all. It is my sincerest hope that this becomes the only astrology and horoscope web site anyone will ever need. This is a huge project, and as you might imagine, we will be under construction for a long time to come! Please be patient as we grow, the more time and care I put intoBusiness signs

this, the better it will be in the long run. I do work another job, but I will be making time for this site’s construction and updating. As some of you may have noticed, we now have free Horoscopes, (by popular demand), and writing these takes time each day.

    How to use this site

Business signsThis is an extremely large site, and being so, I have endeavored to make it as easy to navigate as possible. Simply look at the row of options in the green on the left, choose the topic that most interests you, and click it! When you are in an area with more options (or branches ) you will find a text navigation bar at the bottom of the page with links to other areas pertaining to that particular topic. Also within each page is links and discussion on how to proceed. Note: The free horoscopes page is the most popular btw.

    Own your own business

Carl Jung characterized people using three criteria:

    • Extraversion – Introversion
    • Sensing – Intuition
    • Thinking – Feeling

Isabel Briggs Myers added a fourth criterion:

The first letters of the different combinations of the four criteria denote personality type formula. For example:

    ISTJ – I ntrovert S ensing T hinking J udging

Upon completing the Jung Typology Test you will obtain your type formula, the strength of each of the preferences and the description of your type. It may help you to identify your lifestyle both in general, and with respect to specific areas of activity. You will also obtain a list of the most suitable career choices based on your personality, along with some educational institutions where you can receive a relevant degree or training. « less

    Jung Marriage Test

    Own your own business

Are you compatible with your soul mate? Looking for a perfect dating partner? Will you have a good and stable relationship? The answer is in the Jung Marriage Test . Read more .

A good and stable relationship between partners is conducive to a happy marriage, and we often don’t know what the underlying cause of our conflicts is. The ability to assess the likelihood of a healthy long term relationship is one of the main challenges in dating and matchmaking. Jung Marriage Test™ addresses this challenge. The test identifies potentially successful and potentially problematic matches by comparing and analysing personality types of the partners. Personality type is defined by the three criteria introduced by Carl Jung:

    • Extraversion – Introversion
    • Sensing – Intuition
    • Thinking – Feeling

And the fourth criterion added by Isabel Briggs Myers *:

The different combinations of these four criteria define sixteen possible personality types. The type formula is denoted by the first letters of the combination, e.g.

ENFP – Extravert iNtuitive Feeling Perceiving

Once you know the type formula and strengths of the preferences of both partners (or prospective partners), it is possible to calculate the index of compatibility (MatchIndex) between the partners. The MatchIndex represents potential for a successful and mutually satisfying long term relationship.

A high MatchIndex ensures a good and stable long-term relationship. If the partners’ MatchIndex is low, then in the vast majority of cases the relationship will be subject to conflict.

Upon completing the test, you will get a MatchIndex for your couple as well as tips on how to maintain a healthy and stable relationship and avoid “bumps”.« less

The knowledge of your personality’s business type is crucial. At the end of the test, you will obtain:

Why does trouble stick to you? Can you control your fortune? How can you leverage the knowledge of your “risk type”? You’ll find the answers in the Risk Attitudes Profile . Read more .

Some people want stability, order and safety in their life. Others have an unconscious drive for a dynamic life, keen excitement, and risk-taking. The reason for many life troubles and lost fortunes is the huge gap between a person’s inherent attitudes toward risk and his or her actual lifestyle, occupation, objectives and how he/she realizes those objectives.

Knowing your own “risk profile” and risk attitude index is crucial because inconsistencies between your natural risk attitudes and your life lead to stress and emotional discomfort, negatively affect your career and business, your private life, and your confidence in your abilities.
