  • Government Small Business Loans, loan for small business.#Loan #for #small #business

    Government Small Business Loans

Government small business loans help put your own business within reach. First there’s the quest for a decent location, then comes building a customer base, followed by all the initial hiccups of generating a cash flow before your business grows roots and gains momentum. The beginning of a business is crucial because it’s when you gain or lose market credibility. If you disappoint your customers, they may not give you a second chance. If your business gets off to a rocky start (most do), and you believe you can recover but need further financing to make this happen, you can apply for government small business loans.

For-profit lenders are reluctant to issue loans to anyone who does not have a strong credit report and financial history. That is not the case with government small business loans. Obviously, a decent credit report is important, and you will have to follow the guidelines regarding the repayment period and the interest rate set by the government, but usually the interest rates charged by government loans are lower than those you could expect in the private sector.

More about Government Small Business Loans

Government loans are typically offered through banks and credit unions that partner with the Small Business Administration (SBA). The SBA is a U.S. government body, with the motive of providing support for small businesses and entrepreneurs. For each loan authorized, a government-backed guarantee offers serious credibility, since the lender knows that even if you default, the government will pay off the balance. These loans can be applied to a number of uses, such as:

    • Purchase of new equipment, machinery, parts, supplies, etc.
    • Financing leasehold improvements
    • Commercial mortgage on buildings
    • Refinance existing debt
    • Establishing a line of credit

Government small business loans benefit both small businesses and the lending agency. For small businesses, it is beneficial because this is money capital they may not have access too. For banks, the loan’s risk is decreased due to the loan being backed by the SBA.

    Different SBA Government Loans

The SBA extends financial help through various lending programs it has to offer. Some of the more popular loans are:

    • 7(a) Loan Guarantee Program: aimed primarily in helping a small business start or expand its services. The maximum size of such a loan is $5 million.
    • MicroLoan Program: mostly used for short-term purposes, such as purchase of goods, office furniture, transportation, computers, etc. The maximum amount is fixed at $50,000.
    • 504 Fixed Asset Program: featuring fixed-rate and long-term financing, these loans are aimed at applicants whose business model will benefit their community directly, either by providing jobs or bringing needed services to an underserved area. Again, the maximum amount is $5 million.
    • Disaster Assistance: under this program, loans are sanctioned to renters or homeowners with a low-interest, long-term plan for the restoration of property to its pre-disaster condition.

In most cases, maintaining a good business credit report is enough to qualify. In addition, it instills confidence not only in the lender, but also in you. There is at least one SBA office in every state in America. If you contact them regarding the startup status of your business model and plan, you can get started on a government small business loan that will give you the financing to make your dreams a reality.

Hidden No More: CHM’s Archives Processing Project Wraps Up

In 2015 CHM was awarded a substantial grant from the Andrew W. Mellon foundation, administered by the Council on Library and Information Resources, to minimally process 26 of the Museum’s most valuable but hidden collections, totaling 1,944 linear feet of material.

The collections document the Information Age in the United States and its ongoing impact on society, from 1921 through 2010, with the bulk of the material from 1945 through 1998. The collections contain correspondence, memoranda, business plans, laboratory notebooks, marketing material, computer manuals, conference proceedings, near print newsletters, rare market studies, and still and moving images. There are records and personal papers from corporations, CEOs, computer science luminaries, female entrepreneurs and inventors, and enthusiastic collectors. Scholars, historians, peer institutions, and the public now have unprecedented access to these unique records of the Information Age.

    Guidelines for invitations

Send out invitations at least six weeks before your event if possible. The invitation style should provide guests an idea of the nature of the event, whether casual, formal, academic, athletic, etc. and should answer the questions who, what, why, when, and where. If you use the campus logo, it should appear on the invitation appropriately. Creative Services can create custom materials tailored to your event and your audience, including the writing, design, and printing of invitations.

    Templates

Public Affairs offers invitation templates that can be customized for your event.

    Content

When writing your invitation, remember to include:

    • Names of the official hosts
    • Date
    • Program start time
    • Location
    • Directions to the venue
    • Map to hotel if relevant
    • Parking information
    • Rain date and location
    • Appropriate dress

    Invitation mailing list

Create a spreadsheet using Excel or similar software. Manage your list and use it as a database with categories such as first name, last name, title, and address. This database will be useful in creating nametags, table assignments, etc. If your event is annual, you’ll be able to add and remove names as necessary throughout the year, so it’s always ready to use.

Ask the guest of honor (if you have one) for input on the guest list and compare the size of your guest list with the size of your venue. Consider issuing “courtesy invitations” to people who aren’t likely to attend, but would feel honored to be invited. Remember to use campus mail whenever possible to save money.

    RSVP methods

    Printed card response

The response card is enclosed in the invitation with an envelope and postage is marked. Designate your response deadline at least one week before the event.

    Phone response

If you have a large guest list, make sure you can handle the increased volume of phone calls; someone must be available during business hours to receive the calls. A voice mailbox may be established that includes a message informing callers that they have reached the appropriate place to leave an acceptance or regret. Ask respondents to spell their name and their guest’s name.

    E-mail response

Make sure the e-mail address you provide has room in its inbox for all of the responses.

    No response

You can simply estimate the number of attendees. This would be appropriate if you are not serving food, and you are not worried about the size of the crowd.

    Acceptances only

For larger mailings, you may want to hear only from those who are planning to attend in order to reduce the number of phone calls, e-mails, or reply mails. Ask whether guests need a vegetarian meal, but don’t ask for general food preferences, or you’ll be inundated with special requests.

    Confirmation cards

Confirmation cards are sent out confirming the acceptance after it is received. They can help ensure attendance and minimize confusion. Consider using them if:

    • You are planning a small event and seating assignments are crucial
    • You are concerned about attendance
    • You initially invited someone over the telephone, so that they need a written reminder of the correct date, time, and location
    • The date, time, or location of your event has changed
    • You need to distribute tickets, parking passes, etc., in advance of your event

Here are three marijuana stocks that are taking their business to new heights in the industry: PotNetwork Holdings, Inc. (POTN), GT Biopharma, Inc. (OXISD) and 22nd Century Group, Inc. (XXII).

The company also put out a recent press release stating they have engaged with a PCAOB registered CPA firm to audit its financials.

“We believe that the timing for this action is now. In consideration of the amount of momentum built up over the past 6 months, coupled with reported revenues of $5,077,625 for the first 6 months of fiscal 2017, the only logical next step was to initiate the auditing process, whereby the market can recognize the significance and legitimacy of the Company’s recent growth,” stated Gary Blum, Chief Executive Officer, PotNetwork Holding, Inc.

Since the beginning of May, (POTN) has seen a price per share increase of 257.64%. On May 4th the stock saw lows of $0.017, to Thursday’s (9/7) opening price of $0.0608.

We are excited to have our Dream Team in place, Mr. Anthony Cataldo stated.

The FDA plan is already feasible. The time to implement a mandate of Very Low Nicotine tobacco in all combustible cigarettes sold in the United States has arrived.”

Cyberattack on Saudi Oil Firm Disquiets U, business computers.#Business #computers

In Cyberattack on Saudi Firm, U.S. Sees Iran Firing Back

    Business computers

The hackers picked the one day of the year they knew they could inflict the most damage on the world’s most valuable company, Saudi Aramco.

On Aug. 15, more than 55,000 Saudi Aramco employees stayed home from work to prepare for one of Islam’s holiest nights of the year — Lailat al Qadr, or the Night of Power — celebrating the revelation of the Koran to Muhammad.

That morning, at 11:08, a person with privileged access to the Saudi state-owned oil company’s computers, unleashed a computer virus to initiate what is regarded as among the most destructive acts of computer sabotage on a company to date. The virus erased data on three-quarters of Aramco’s corporate PCs — documents, spreadsheets, e-mails, files — replacing all of it with an image of a burning American flag.

United States intelligence officials say the attack’s real perpetrator was Iran , although they offered no specific evidence to support that claim. But the secretary of defense,

, in a recent speech warning of the dangers of computer attacks, cited the Aramco sabotage as “a significant escalation of the cyber threat.” In the Aramco case, hackers who called themselves the “Cutting Sword of Justice” and claimed to be activists upset about Saudi policies in the Middle East took responsibility.

But their online message and the burning flag were probably red herrings, say independent computer researchers who have looked at the virus’s code.

Immediately after the attack, Aramco was forced to shut down the company’s internal corporate network, disabling employees’ e-mail and Internet access, to stop the virus from spreading.

It could have been much worse. An examination of the sabotage revealed why government officials and computer experts found the attack disturbing. Aramco’s oil production operations are segregated from the company’s internal communications network. Once executives were assured that only the internal communications network had been hit and that not a drop of oil had been spilled, they set to work replacing the hard drives of tens of thousands of its PCs and tracking down the parties responsible, according to two people close to the investigation but who were not authorized to speak publicly about it.

Aramco flew in roughly a dozen American computer security experts. By the time those specialists arrived, they already had a good handle on the virus. Within hours of the attack, researchers at Symantec , a Silicon Valley security company, began analyzing a sample of the virus.

That virus — called Shamoon after a word embedded in its code — was designed to do two things: replace the data on hard drives with an image of a burning American flag and report the addresses of infected computers — a bragging list of sorts — back to a computer inside the company’s network.

Shamoon’s code included a so-called kill switch, a timer set to attack at 11:08 a.m., the exact time that Aramco’s computers were wiped of memory. Shamoon’s creators even gave the erasing mechanism a name: Wiper.

    Business computers

Computer security researchers noted that the same name, Wiper, had been given to an erasing component of Flame , a computer virus that attacked Iranian oil companies and came to light in May. Iranian oil ministry officials have claimed that the Wiper software code forced them to cut Internet connections to their oil ministry, oil rigs and the Kharg Island oil terminal, a conduit for 80 percent of Iran’s oil exports.

It raised suspicions that the Aramco hacking was retaliation. The United States fired one of the first shots in the computer war and has long maintained the upper hand. The New York Times reported in June that the United States, together with Israel , was responsible for Stuxnet , the computer virus used to destroy centrifuges in an Iranian nuclear facility in 2010.

Last May, researchers discovered that Flame had been siphoning data from computers, mainly in Iran, for several years. Security researchers believe Flame and Stuxnet were written by different programmers, but commissioned by the same two nations.

If American officials are correct that Shamoon was designed by Iran, then clues in its code may have been intended to misdirect blame. Shamoon’s programmers inserted the word “Arabian Gulf” into its code. But Iranians refer to that body of water as the Persian Gulf and are very protective of the name. (This year, Iran threatened to sue Google for removing the name Persian Gulf from its online maps.)

After analyzing the software code from the Aramco attack, security experts say that the event involved a company insider, or insiders, with privileged access to Aramco’s network. The virus could have been carried on a USB memory stick that was inserted into a PC.

Aramco’s attackers posted blocks of I.P. addresses of thousands of Aramco PCs online as proof of the attack. Researchers say that only an Aramco employee or contractor with access to the company’s internal network would have been able to grab that list from a disconnected computer inside Aramco’s network and put it online.

Neither researchers nor officials have disclosed the names of the attackers involved. Saudi Aramco said in a statement that it was inappropriate to comment amid an investigation. The company further stated that it does not comment on rumor or speculation.

American intelligence officials blame Iran for a similar, subsequent attack on RasGas, the Qatari natural gas giant, two weeks after the Aramco attack. They also believe Iran engineered computer attacks that intermittently took America’s largest banks offline in September, and last week disrupted the online banking Web sites of Capital One and BB T.

Multiple requests for comment from Iran’s interests office in Washington and to Iran’s mission to the United Nations in New York brought no response.

The finger-pointing demonstrates the growing concern in the United States among government officials and private industry that other countries have the technology and skill to initiate attacks. “The Iranians were faster in developing an attack capability and bolder in using it than we had expected,” said James A. Lewis, a former diplomat and cybersecurity expert at the Center for Strategic and International Studies . “Both sides are going through a dance to figure out how much they want to turn this into a fight.”

More than two months after the Aramco attack, the company continues to deal with the aftermath. Still, this month employees were not able to gain access to their corporate e-mail and internal network for several days. Until the company’s executives decide its systems are secure, employees can no longer access Aramco’s internal network remotely.

The attack, intelligence officials say, was a wake-up call. “It proved you don’t have to be sophisticated to do a lot of damage,” said

    Richard A. Clarke

, the former counterterrorism official at the National Security Council . “There are lots of targets in the U.S. where they could do the same thing. The attacks were intended to say: ‘If you mess with us, you can expect retaliation.’ ”

    Amazon is buying Whole Foods for $13, buying a business.#Buying #a #business

Amazon is buying Whole Foods for $13.7 billion

    Buying a business

Amazon is making a big bet on physical stores and the business of food.

The online retail giant announced Friday that is buying organic grocery chain Whole Foods ( WFM ) for $13.7 billion in cash. The deal values Whole Foods at $42 a share, 27% higher than where the stock was trading Thursday.

Amazon ( AMZN , Tech30) said Whole Foods stores will continue operating under that name as a separate unit of the company. Whole Foods CEO John Mackey will stay on to lead Whole Foods, which will keep its headquarters in Austin, Texas.

The deal shows Amazon’s interest in moving into the business of operating traditional brick-and-mortar stores, even as many retailers that have been crippled by Amazon’s growth have announced a series of store closings.

It also shows Amazon’s growing interest in groceries. The company has its own delivery service, AmazonFresh, and is experimenting with a “click and collect” model, letting customers buy groceries online, then pick them up in person.

The supermarket business, like many other parts of retail, has been hit hard by increased competition from Amazon itself, as well as Walmart ( WMT ) .

Grocery giant Kroger ( KR ) said Thursday that its profits for the year would be lower than Wall Street expected, sending its stock plunging nearly 20%.

Then Kroger’s stock plummeted 13% further on Friday after the Amazon-Whole Foods detail was announced.

Shares of other retailers with a big presence in groceries, such as Target ( TGT ) , Costco ( COST ) , SuperValu ( SVU ) and Sprouts ( SFM ) , plunged as well.

And Walmart was down 5%, despite announcing another online commerce deal of its own Friday. It bought men’s apparel company Bonobos.

But Amazon’s stock rose 3% on the news. Investors don’t seem too concerned by how much the company is spending. A warning of a possible credit downgrade by ratings agency S P Global Ratings didn’t hurt Amazon either.

S P said that Amazon may need to take on more debt as a result of the acquisition. But Amazon finished the first quarter with $21.5 billion in cash and securities on its balance sheet — and only $7.7 billion in long-term debt.

Amazon’s deal for Whole Foods also further demonstrates the financial might of the Jeff Bezos-led company, whose market value is greater than that of the 12 largest traditional general retailers combined.

“Millions of people love Whole Foods Market because they offer the best natural and organic foods, and they make it fun to eat healthy,” said Bezos.

Whole Foods, founded in 1978, is widely credited with helping to make organic food go mainstream. The company now has about 87,000 employees and more than 460 stores — mostly in the U.S. But Whole Foods has also expanded to Canada and the U.K.

The company has been moving aggressively in big cities, targeting millennial shoppers with a store format called 365 by Whole Foods Market that, like rival Trader Joe’s, has lower prices than the ones found at core Whole Foods stores.

High prices, of course, have been a problem for Whole Foods. The company is often derisively referred to as Whole Paycheck since the company charges a pretty penny for spelt and quinoa.

The company was accused of overcharging customers by regulators in New York City in 2015 and that had a huge negative impact on Whole Foods. Sales plunged for several quarters.

And the company became the butt of jokes by late-night comedians. HBO’s John Oliver did a savage skit about the company’s high prices. (HBO, like CNNMoney, is owned by Time Warner.)

Oliver ran a mock commercial showing, among other things, a block of ice with an avocado balanced on top for $25.99, a pomegranate that listened to NPR for $64.99, and tilapia wearing yoga pants for $84.99.

Mackey eventually wound up apologizing to customers. But the damage was done.

Sales growth at Whole Foods has slowed and profits have yet to return to levels before the price scandal. That may be one reason why Whole Foods was willing to sell to Amazon.

It will be interesting to see if Amazon — which has a reputation for keeping prices low — will turn Whole Foods into more of a bargain retailer as well.

It’s also worth noting that Whole Foods stock did not move much higher than $42 on Friday — the price that Amazon agreed to pay. That could be a sign that Wall Street does not expect a bidding war for the company that would push the sale price higher.

So it looks like Bezos will inherit the bad PR baggage that comes with Whole Foods. I wonder if it’s too soon for people to ask Alexa where they can find stalks of asparagus in a bottle of water for $6.

International business etiquette in Europe – definition and etiquette tips, business etiquette.#Business

    Business Etiquette

Do you know the definition of Business Etiquette? Business etiquette is about building relationships with other people. Etiquette is not about rules regulations but is about providing basic social comfort and creating an environment where others feel comfortable and secure, this is possible through better communication.

Social media communication platforms (i.e. Facebook, Linkedin) are evolving rapidly day by day, as the concept of social media etiquette becomes a crucial part of business. Business etiquette consists of two things. Firstly, thoughtful consideration of the interests and feelings of others and secondly, being able to minimise misunderstandings. These are influenced by individual behaviour demeanour. Business etiquette instructs this behaviour.

Business etiquette differs from region to region and from country to country. This creates a complex situation for people as it is hard to balance the focus on both international business etiquette and other business activities at the same time. Therefore, a wise step is to focus on some key pillars of business etiquette.

Here are some key business etiquette tips that mean real success to business:

If you want to differentiate yourself from others then never forget to write a‘Thank You’ note to your job interviewer or your client. This will leave a good impression and also reflect well on your company.

Give others respect by knowing their names which will increase goodwill and communication. it is also worth management stepping back and acknowledging people individually for their good work as this will enhance their self esteem and increase motivation.

Be mindful of saying appropriate things at a job interview or client meeting. Don’t start discussing business with a client or interviewer as soon as you step out of the lift. By doing so, you avoid the risk of damaging your reputation.

Focus on the Face, Not the Screen

Never forget to switch off your phone and try not to use any other device just to prove you are a multitasking individual. In fact, in the world of business this is considered bad manners. Concentrate on the meeting and listen to what people are saying.

Everyone is unique in their own way and uses a different approach to deal with situations. Therefore, if you disagree with another person’s approach instead of criticising try to understand it from their point of view. By doing so, you create a friendly environment. Always remember you get respect by giving respect.

Whether in business or between individuals, one concern is brand awareness. Individuals want to be noticed both socially and professionally. People want to be remembered by others.

However, in the digital landscape you have to be very careful when trying to pursue your brand awareness. Think carefully before doing. What we mean by this is that before creating a hashtag, posting on a Facebook wall or texting think how the other person will feel when they receive your message.

    Character, Behaviour, Honesty

Your character reflects your individuality and your behaviour exhibits your personality. Business etiquette encourages revealing your positive qualities. This helps your reputation.

Always be honest and remember that it takes a long time to develop trust and a good reputation and only one small mistake to lose it. Business etiquette provides a framework for stating the boundaries of terms conditions, contracts and promises.

A key pillar of business etiquette is sensitivity, meaning giving careful thought to every business aspect before making a judgement. This gives a strong foundation to your business. Also, thoughtless words and actions lead to a negative outcome. Being aware of business etiquette encourages careful thought.

    Elements of business etiquette

Business etiquette instructs on you how to present yourself professionally in different cultures. The keys for making a good impression are dressing appropriately, your body language, presenting your business cards, gift giving, conducting meetings and many other important elements.

  • Business Lunch Etiquette – Etiquette Tips, Manners – Communication, business etiquette.#Business #etiquette

    Business Lunch Etiquette

Some business discussions are meant to happen in the office meeting rooms. For example, when you need to talk about company s strategy for the next year or if you have to decide on a quarterly marketing budget. But in case of corporate networking, a meeting with prospective client or when you are willing to clarify some less important business details, a business lunch appointment is just what the doctor ordered.

Let s revisit business lunch etiquette rules and make sure you did everything for the dining to go off without a hitch.

He who fails to plan, plans to fail

    Business etiquette

    • If you are the initiator of the business lunch, you are the one who has to organize it.
    • In case you are preparing to dine with more than one person, avoid any exotic places and stick to a restaurant with classic menu. See if there are vegetarian dishes in the list for when some of the participants doesn t eat meat. The best practice include asking the attendees about their meal preferences in advance.
    • If you meet one person, you might want to invite her/him to dine at a place you know (s)he enjoys. Email or call the person and check if there is a place (s)he d like to visit.
    • It is essential to book a table before going to a place, especially if you know the restaurant is crowded during the lunch hours.
    • Reserve a table in a familiar establishment. If you never been there before, check the restaurant before the meeting and preferably during lunch hours; see if the place is suitable for your get-together.
    • The safe choice is a restaurant that is specialized on business lunches. Avoid family friendly eating houses. You don t want your partners to be annoyed by children running around the table.
    • Try to book the best table at the place. It shouldn t be too close to the kitchen or rest room doors or anywhere where people will pass by often.
    • Email the reservation details (time, place and the restaurant s web page if there is one) and full list of parties to all the participants. There should be no surprises for anyone; if you decide to invite someone else last-minute, it is always good to confirm that other people won t mind the extra guest.
    • Think of the outfit you chose for the business lunch. Unless you are confident other attendees will appear in casual, stick to the business attire. Even if you don t have a strict office dress code, try to take some formal clothes with you and change before going to the meeting.
    • If you are the host of the lunch, arrive at least 10 minutes early. You can check if the table position is good enough and review the menu while waiting for other guests.

Bad table manners is grounds for impeachment

    • While at lunch switch off your mobile or at least put it on silent mode. Continuously ringing phone can turn the most loyal associate against you.
    • Be polite with the stuff. Rude attitude towards a sluggish waiter can be a deal breaker at your meeting. No one likes to interact with ill-mannered individuals, especially when it comes to a potential business together.

    Business etiquette

    • Always start with a small talk and don t jump to the business discussions from the 1 st minute. At the same time, if you are the host of the business lunch, it is you who will need to initiate the formal part of the conversation.
    • When at the table, let the invited guests start with the order. If you were planning on eating a steak and your guests take a salad, go easy on the menu as well, business lunch is much more about business than about food. Sometimes it is a good idea to come to the rendezvous not that hungry, just in case your partners decide to keep it light.
    • Don t order a dessert initially. Wait till you are done with the main meal and see if you and other people would like to have the last course as well.
    • Never order messy food. Avoid chicken wings and other finger dishes.
    • The lunch begins when the host unfolds her/his napkin. While eating, place the napkin on your lap and take it from there only if you need to go to the rest room. In such case, place the napkin on the chair and put it back on your knees when you are back.
    • If there is a full tableware set if front of you and you are not sure which fork to use next, remember the work from the outside in rule. Starting with the spoon, fork, or knife that is farthest from your plate, work your way in, using one utensil for each course.

    Business etiquette

    • Salt pepper always come together, even if someone asked you to pass salt only, always give the full set.
    • Eat in small bites and don t cut more than 2 bites at the time.
    • Don t talk with your mouth full, wait until you swallowed the food and then continue the conversation.
    • Don t get drunk at the business lunch. It is appropriate to order a glass of wine of beer while dining, but any strong alcoholic beverage should be excluded from your menu.

It s what you do when you walk out. That s when you ve made a lasting impression.

    • If you are the host of the lunch, you have to pay the bill. Even if your guests offer to split the bill, best practice would be to decline the proposal and take care of the check yourself. At the same time, as an invited person, you should always suggest covering part of the fees.

    Business etiquette

    • As the host, you should leave generous tips to stuff. Even if you weren t that happy with the service, business meeting is not a good place to display your dissatisfaction. Leave 10-15% tips and avoid the restaurant next time.
    • If the dining didn t go the way you hoped and you failed to find common ground with the attendees, thank the participants for the lunch and the time they took to meet you anyway.
    • When you are back in the office, send a follow-up email with a thank you note to all the parties. In the email you may also highlight the most important discussion parts and conclusions.

Bad Credit Business Loans: Poor Credit Business Financing, business loans bad credit.#Business

Bad Credit Business Loans & Financing Solution

Stop applying for Bad Credit Business Loans!

Acquiring a business loan is not easy for businesses with bad credit. Getting approved for a business loan from a bank with a credit score of 650 or less can be extremely difficult. Unfortunately for young businesses bad credit is a common plight. Many entrepreneurs quickly learn that their initial business loan was helpful in establishing and starting up – but expansion, maintenance or even growth requires additional funding which may not always be available. New small businesses tend to damage their own chances for secondary financing during slow beginnings when fixed loan repayments are not always made on time. Other factors such as personal credit may also damage ones ability to be approved for a business loan as most lenders (banks and other financial institutions) look at a combination of both personal and business credit. Many business owners turn to private lenders, small loan companies, or even family or friends. Acquiring the necessary funds through these private channels is usually not realistic as funding amounts are typically limited.

The Business grants and funding available to UK small businesses, government grants

    Government Grants

The government grants section has a wealth of articles and advice on how UK small businesses can get a grant from both the public and private sector, along with helpful guides on the different types of business grants and funding available to business owners starting and running a business.

A small business grants guide for 2017

Here, Peter Fleming takes a look at a range of options for funding your business through grants this year.

There are many European and UK-wide government business grant schemes; there are also local business funding schemes provided through Local Enterprise Partnerships (LEPs) or through local authorities and organisations such as the Chambers of Commerce. However there were 512 registered schemes at the last count! So a good place to start your research is on the government website.

Business grants are available at a local and national level and usually sector specific. They offer between £1,000 and £100,000 for SMEs, but funds can be unlimited for larger businesses within EU state aid programmes.

With grants you don’t pay the money back. However, it’s worth noting there will be clawback terms if you falsify claims in respect to expected outputs set by the grant scheme. Therefore, ensure your application is captivating and thorough as it will go through a due diligence process.

Normally there are two stages, submitting an Expression of Interest (EOI) to ensure your business and grant application meets the scope of the grant call and then a full application process whereby you will need to supply, market research, a business plan and at least 1-3 years of financial forecasts.

Throughout the process, you will need to justify there is additionality i.e. not just the reason why you need funding, but by obtaining a grant, how many new jobs you will create, if you’re opening up new markets or export opportunities or that your idea could be a game changer.

It is always worth getting a second opinion regarding the feasibility and strength of your application against the grant objectives and any regional strategic economic plan. Therefore speak to your accountant, a local business adviser or the Growth Hub.

The larger grant opportunities can be competitive and therefore be a long-drawn-out process, taking several months in some cases to receive just an offer. So if you are looking for subsidies and money quickly a grant may not be the right solution for your business.

It is also worth noting if your application is successful, grant moneys are not paid upfront but claimed normally at the back end of the project or even after any intervention is completed.

Therefore you will need to use your own cash reserves and any other funding prior to drawing down the grant money. I have even known businesses take out bridging loans till they have received their grant funds.

    Some key areas of your business whereby you could access business advice or a grant;

Business advice and support, whether you are pre-start, a new start or an established business, there are regional Business Growth Hubs across the UK whereby you can obtain free or funded advice. You can normally obtain specialist support to devise a business growth strategy, do market research to create a sales and marketing plan, implement social media management or even get advice on how to apply for further funding.

Note each UK region may have a focus on specific business sectors, business sizes and locations, as eligibility can be even post code specific.

    Skills and development government grants

The Skills Funding Agency oversees the current apprenticeship scheme, however on May 1st 2017 the new Apprenticeship Levy scheme starts whereby your business could access subsidised training and development to upskill existing employees to even Master’s degree level.

Many regional Universities, Colleges and further education organisations will be offering a multitude of subsidised short courses or funded degree level programmes which will help you develop your existing staff to be the managers and directors of the future.

If your business is within a rural development area and looking to grow, invest in infrastructure, machinery or seek specialist advice to diversify. Or if your business is involved with forestry and land projects the government have a scheme called LEADER managed through Local Action Groups.

The Carbon Trust Green Business Fund is a new energy efficiency support service for small and medium-sized companies in England, Scotland and Wales.

It provides direct funded support through energy assessments, training workshops, equipment procurement support and up to £10,000 capital contribution towards the purchase of energy saving equipment.

Manufacturing is an area which is increasingly supported through grant schemes. Therefore if you manufacture textiles, specialist tooling, operate in the digital market, within the nuclear supply chain or need support for international trade, or manufacture in many other sectors, there is likely to be a grant scheme that your business can access.

    Innovation, Research and Development

Innovate UK, offers support and funding to help businesses develop new products and services and bring them closer to market, this may be to bring people together to share ideas, tackle challenges and make new technological advances.

They targets technologies and areas with the greatest scope to improve business, the economy and society.

    Local Enterprise Partnership

For anyone looking for grants at the moment, the go-to people will be their Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP). One of the main functions of the LEPS is to generate economic growth and so many have their own grants programmes.

In addition, most provide some form of business support and advice. As part of the business advice service they collate information on local and national grants and will signpost business owners to the relevant organisations.

Another great source of information is the government ‘Business is Great’ website which has a page dedicated to a number of funds to support innovation.

There is also is an EU tool which does a better job than anything I’ve seen of clarifying what finance is available across the EU including although is does require some persistence in searching to get to the information.

For companies and individuals with ground breaking research which may require significant funding there is also Horizon 2020:

Grant funding is not for everyone but could give your business the boost it needs. Proper preparation, thorough research, getting professional advice and being able to clearly explain why you require your grant funding is more likely to lead to a successful application. And, as a result, help you obtain the financial support for a better, bigger and more profitable business for you.

    Unsecured Business Loans

A business may require a loan for a number of reasons. Whether you’re looking to expand your business or purchase additional inventory and equipment, quick access to a business loan can help stimulate business growth and keep a company thriving.

    Unsecured Business Loans

    Working Capital Loans

Working capital is critical to the growth and success of any business. Managing finances is a constant battle in the business world. As a business grows, it is necessary that the cash flow expands with it in order to succeed.

    Inventory Loans

If you manage products and maintain a large inventory, having cash at hand is a must. Meeting the demand of your customers is vital to your profitability and business reputation.

    Expansion Loans

Financial growth and internal business expansion go hand and hand. The big question facing any business is how to grow in a way that is both manageable and cost effective.

    Equipment Loans

Equipment and machinery are important assets to any business. Many products can’t be produced without the proper working tools. An equipment loan can be used to purchase new or used equipment.

    What is an Unsecured Loan?

An unsecured loan, sometimes referred to as a signature loan or a merchant loan, is a special type of financing available to business that is different from traditional lending. Instead of requiring collateral to obtain financing, unsecured lending uses several other factors to judge the eligibility of a loan applicant. These could include things such as your credit score and sales records from the business. This type of financing may be advisable for small business owners who do not want to risk their personal collateral in order to obtain the financing they need. Since the loan requirements differ from traditional bank loans, the interest rates and speed of approval can be much different. Oftentimes these merchant loans are reviewed and approved in a very short time frame, making them ideal for anyone who is in need of immediate capital.

    Secured Vs. Unsecured Loans

The main difference between an unsecured and a secured loan is the collateral required. There are pros and cons to all lending options that business owners should consider in order to come to an informed financial decision for their business.

    Secured Loans

Secured Loans often come from banks or traditional lending sources. They are the most common type of financial borrowing available. Secured loans, backed by an asset such as a house or piece of property, give the lender the ability to repossess collateral should the borrower default on their loan. The type of collateral required can vary and the lender and borrower must come to agreeable terms in order to move forward with the lending process.

Loan processes vary between different secured lending services. The standard procedure usually involves the loan amount, asset negotiation and loan repayment terms. Repayment terms are often much more generous in both time and interest rate because the loan is backed by collateral in the event of default. Secured loans, backed by an asset such as a house or piece of property, give the lender the ability to repossess collateral should the borrower default on their loan.

    Unsecured Loans

Unsecured loans differ drastically from secured loans, including the application requirements. Merchant business lending is not centered on collateral or personal assets, and instead focuses on other factors of your business to determine loan worthiness. Some factors that can help with acquiring an unsecured loan might include your credit history, sales records, business growth, and projected financial income.

Unsecured business loans can come in the form of credit cards, personal loans, corporate bonds, and payday loans. Interest rates tend to be higher and come with a shorter repayment period, which results in a lower amount paid towards interest. There is no collateral required for this loan agreement.

    IBM builds a smarter planet

Amid the global economic crisis of 2008, IBM began a conversation with the world about the promise of a smarter planet and a new strategic agenda for progress and growth.

As the internet grew, so did technology-driven enterprise needs and a truly global workforce. Computational power was being infused into things no one had thought of as computers: phones, cars, roads, power lines, waterways and food crates. A trillion connected and intelligent things were becoming a system of systems — an internet of things — and producing oceans of raw data.

Let’s seize this opportunity to create more and better jobs, cultivate valuable skills, and not simply repair but prepare our economy for the 21st century.

Sam Palmisano, IBM CEO and chairman, 2009

    New business ideas

Making sense of a sensored world

IBM introduced its Smarter Planet vision with an award-winning 1 marketing campaign designed to explain how a whole new generation of intelligent systems and technologies — more powerful and accessible than ever before — could be put to use for profound impact and to encourage further thinking. Smarter power grids, smarter food systems, smarter water, smarter healthcare, smarter traffic systems. And sophisticated analytics and algorithms that could make sense of it all.

Forward-thinking leaders and citizens around the world began to consider innovative ideas such as traveler-centric transportation, consumer-centric electric power and intelligent systems for managing healthcare, water, public safety and food. Within a year of the Smarter Planet initiative s launch, hundreds of IBM clients had seized on new capabilities to build smarter systems, and began achieving measurable benefits for their companies and communities. 2

    Building on a smarter planet

Six years and thousands of clients after the Smarter Planet debut, IBM showcased its progress in a 2014 campaign, Made With IBM. The campaign showed IBM as an essential partner in providing technology building blocks for the new world at work — data, cloud, mobile, social and security.

In 2015 the Outthink campaign promoted the concept of cognitive business, with IBM Watson at its center. Smarter Planet had shown us an intelligent, instrumented and interconnected world. The Cognitive Era advances that idea using analytics, natural language processing and machine learning. The goal is systems that can understand, reason and learn; as IBM CEO Ginni Rometty explains, to redefine the relationship between man and machine.

I Get a Lot of Things Wrong

Best business ideas It s become something of a strategy for me to jump into something, try to do it, fail, and then learn a little bit in the process. I learn more by failing than by studying something to death. But that s not all.

I Get a Lot of Things Wrong

I get people wrong. I forget that not everyone should be taken at face value. For me, I just don t know how to be a lot of different versions of myself. I m me. No matter if you see me on a stage in front of thousands or say hi to me while I m peeing in the men s room, I m the same guy. (Though I m not going to shake your hand in the men s room.) I take everyone at face value anyway, and then am willing to be wrong about them.

Free MBA Program – No-Cost Online Business Courses, online business classes.#Online #business

    Free MBA Program

    Online business classes

A free MBA program may sound too good to be true, but the fact is that nowadays you can get a well-rounded business education for free. The Internet has provided a way for everyone around the world to learn more about any topic they re interested in. Some of the best colleges, universities and business institutions in the world offer free business courses that can be completed at your convenience.

These courses are self-guided, which means that you study independently and at your own pace.

Will the Free MBA Program Result in a Degree?

You will not receive college credit or a degree when you complete the free courses detailed below, but you may get a certificate of completion after finishing some of the courses, and you will definitely get started on the education you need to start or manage a business. The skills you pick up could also be of value in your current position or in a more advanced position within your field. The idea of completing an MBA program without earning a degree may seem disappointing, but remember, the essential point of an education is to gain knowledge, not a piece of paper.

The courses shown below have been chosen to create an MBA program that provides a general business education. You ll find courses in general business, accounting, finance, marketing, entrepreneurship, leadership, and management.

As mentioned earlier, courses can be taken at your convenience.

    Accounting

Understanding basic accounting procedures is important for every business student – whether you plan to enter the accounting field or not. Every individual and business uses accounting in day-to-day operations. Take all three courses to get a well-rounded view this topic.

    • Introduction to Accounting: This introductory course from the U.S. Small Business Administration provides an overview of accounting. The course takes approximately 30 minutes to complete. Choose from a text-based or video-based option.
    • Bookkeeping Course: This free online bookkeeping course is a text-based course that covers basic bookkeeping topics, such as balance sheets, cash flow statements, and debits and credits. You should participate in all course activities to cement knowledge and then test yourself with post-lesson quizzes.
    • Principles of Financial Accounting: This University of Alaska course delves deeper into financial accounting. Lectures are delivered via slides. The course also includes homework assignments and a final exam.

    Advertising and Marketing

Marketing is important for any business that sells a product or service. If you plan to start your own business, work in management, or pursue a career in marketing or advertising, it is essential to learn the psychology of advertising and marketing processes. Complete all three courses to gain a thorough understanding of both topics.

    • Marketing 101: This free business course from the U.S. Small Business Administration offers an overview of marketing with an emphasis on reaching a wider customer base. The course takes approximately 30 minutes to complete.
    • Principles of Marketing: Provided through Study.com, this free online course includes a series of nearly 100 short video lessons. Each video covers a specific topic and includes a post-lesson quiz.
    • Advanced Marketing: This free MBA course from NetMBA provides detailed text-based lessons on a variety of marketing topics.

    Entrepreneurship

Whether you plan to start your own business or not, entrepreneurship training is an important part of a general business education. This knowledge can be useful for everything from branding to product launches to project management. Explore both courses to learn about the different aspects of entrepreneurship.

    • Introduction to Franchising: This U.S. Small Business Administration course introduces students to franchising and provides tips on choosing a franchise. The course takes approximately 30 minutes to complete.
    • Starting a Business: This free entrepreneurship course from MyOwnBusiness.org covers key start-up topics including writing a business plan, building a business, and operation management. The course includes instruction, quizzes, and other learning materials.

    Leadership and Management

Leadership skills are extraordinarily important in the business world, even if you don t work in a supervisory capacity. Taking courses in leadership and management will teach you how to manage both people and the day-to-day operations of a business, department, or project. Take all three courses to gain a full understanding of management and leadership principles.

    • Principles of Management: Study.com provides an extensive video-based course focused on business management. The course is divided into short easy-to-digest lessons, each with a post-lesson quiz.
    • Leadership Lab: This free leadership lab from MIT s Sloan School of Management consists of videos, lecture notes, assignments, and other learning materials.
    • Business Management and Leadership: This free MBA course from Master Class Management is a mini MBA program that results in a certificate of completion.

    MBA Program Electives

Business electives are a great way to further specialize in a topic that interests you. Here are a couple of electives to consider. You can also search out your own to focus your studies on something that interests you.

    • Business Law: This introductory business law course from Education-Portal.com consists of more than short video lesson. You can test your knowledge at the end of each portion with post-lesson quizzes.
    • Strategic Human Resources Management: MIT s Sloan School of Management offers text-based lecture notes, assignments, and a final exam focused on human resource management strategies.

    Get Real Course Credit

If you would rather take courses that result in some sort of certificate or even a university recognized degree without enrolling in business school and paying a sizable tuition bill, you may want to consider looking at sites like Coursera or EdX, both of which offer courses from some of the top universities in the world.

Coursera offers certificate courses and degree programs that start as low as $15. Admission is required for degree programs. EdX offers university credits for a small fee per credit hour.

  • Improve your local ranking on Google – Google My Business Help, business

Improve your local ranking on Google

Local results appear for people who search for businesses and places near their location. They’re shown in a number of places across Maps and Search. For example, you’ll probably see local results if you search for “Italian restaurant” from your mobile device. Google will try to show you the kind of nearby restaurant that you’d like to visit. In the image below, Google uses local results to suggest some options.

You can improve your business’s local ranking by using Google My Business.

Can’t find your business? Improve your info.

You may find that your business doesn’t appear for relevant searches in your area. To maximize how often your customers see your business in local search results, complete the following tasks in Google My Business. Providing and updating business information in Google My Business can help your business’s local ranking on Google and enhance your presence in Search and Maps.

    Enter complete data

Local results favor the most relevant results for each search, and businesses with complete and accurate information are easier to match with the right searches. Make sure that you’ve entered all of your business information in Google My Business, so customers know more about what you do, where you are, and when they can visit you. Provide information like (but not limited to) your physical address, phone number, and category. Make sure to keep this information updated as your business changes. Learn how to edit your business information

    Verify your location(s)

Verify your business locations to give them the best opportunity to appear for users across Google products, like Maps and Search. Learn more about verification

    Keep your hours accurate

Entering and updating your opening hours, including special hours for holidays and special events, lets potential customers know when you’re available and gives them confidence that when they travel to your location, it will be open. Learn how to edit your hours

    Manage and respond to reviews

Interact with customers by responding to reviews that they leave about your business. Responding to reviews shows that you value your customers and the feedback that they leave about your business. High-quality, positive reviews from your customers will improve your business’s visibility and increase the likelihood that a potential customer will visit your location. Encourage customers to leave feedback by creating a link they can click to write reviews. Learn more

    Add photos

Adding photos to your listings shows people your goods and services, and can help you tell the story of your business. Accurate and appealing pictures may also show potential customers that your business offers what they’re searching for. Learn more

    How Google determines local ranking

Local results are based primarily on relevance, distance, and prominence. These factors are combined to help find the best match for your search. For example, Google algorithms might decide that a business that’s farther away from your location is more likely to have what you’re looking for than a business that’s closer, and therefore rank it higher in local results.

    Relevance

Relevance refers to how well a local listing matches what someone is searching for. Adding complete and detailed business information can help Google better understand your business and match your listing to relevant searches.

    Distance

Just like it sounds–how far is each potential search result from the location term used in a search? If a user doesn’t specify a location in their search, Google will calculate distance based on what’s known about their location.

    Prominence

Prominence refers to how well-known a business is. Some places are more prominent in the offline world, and search results try to reflect this in local ranking. For example, famous museums, landmark hotels, or well-known store brands that are familiar to many people are also likely to be prominent in local search results.

Prominence is also based on information that Google has about a business from across the web (like links, articles, and directories). Google review count and score are factored into local search ranking: more reviews and positive ratings will probably improve a business’s local ranking. Your position in web results is also a factor, so SEO best practices also apply to local search optimization.

There’s no way to request or pay for a better local ranking on Google. We do our best to keep the details of the search algorithm confidential to make the ranking system as fair as possible for everyone.
