“Collateral can be a big difficulty,” says Sasha Werblin of the Greenlining Institute, a nonprofit that helps bring capital and resources into minority communities. Many were hit hard by the foreclosure crisis, and business owners whose credit was tarnished by a foreclosure often have a hard time qualifying for traditional loans, she says.

The average credit score of a minority small-business owner is 707, which is 15 points lower than the average of all small-business owners in the U.S. according to a 2016 study by Experian. And the average business credit score of a minority-owned small business is 49.7 — nearly five points lower than the national average of all small businesses.

But financing is available. We’ve rounded up some top resources for minority entrepreneurs looking for loans:

Online lenders generally provide small-business loans faster than banks and other traditional sources do, and with less stringent requirements. The cost of this convenience is a higher annual percentage yield, or APR. These lenders don’t specialize in minority clients, but they provide a good option if you don’t qualify for a bank loan because you have bad credit or a limited business history, or you don’t have collateral — or simply can’t afford to wait months for financing.

If you have a 500+ personal credit score

Because you have a lower personal credit score, your best bet may be a lender such as Kabbage and Fundbox that doesn’t have a minimum requirement. Kabbage is a good option if you need fast cash for working capital and have at least $50,000 in annual revenue. Fundbox is better if you have unpaid customer invoices. To qualify, you’ll need to use online accounting software that is compatible to Fundbox, such as QuickBooks or FreshBooks.
Once your personal credit score reaches 500, you could get a more competitive rate with OnDeck. Your business must generate at least $100,000 in sales annually. The lender, which offers term loans of up to $500,000, is a good option for expansion financing.

Out of the 10 computers we reviewed, this is the best processor. Since we determined that a 6,000 PassMark score was the minimum passable score, you can see that this business desktop computer clearly has the processing power needed to handle running multiple business apps at a time.

In addition to the excellent CPU, the M900 is one of the few business PCs in our review with a dedicated graphics card. It comes with the Nvidia GeForce GT 720, which has 1GB of memory. Having a dedicated graphics card means that the i7-6700 processor doesn’t process graphics until the card is maxed out. This allows it to more freely process other data. In other words, when you combine this graphics card with a quad-core processor, the performance is among the best you’ll find at this price range. You can run a video-editing program and do your taxes at the same time without a hitch.

Memory & Storage

The Lenovo ThinkCentre M900 comes with 8GB of memory, which is the standard amount of memory for business desktop computers at the $1,000 range. With this much memory, you won’t have any trouble running most business programs like Excel, PowerPoint and Word or data-intensive programs like video-editing software. However, if 8GB isn’t enough memory for your business, you can upgrade the RAM to as high as 32GB.

The hard drive has 1TB of storage, which is also standard at this price point. This is most storage of any of the hard drives you can upgrade to, but you can add a second 1-TB hard drive. For most business computers, 1TB of storage is enough for several years, unless you have a lot of music and videos.

You can upgrade the hard drive to a 256-GB solid-state drive, which can add a lot of value to an office PC’s performance, because the data is accessed much faster and is less susceptible to drive failures as there are no moving parts.

Connectivity

The ThinkCentre M900 has only eight USB ports, which is the least number of ports for a business computer. Each port is a USB 3.0, which are also compatible with USB 2.0 devices. The best business computers have at least 12 USB ports. You want to have at least two or three ports more than what you know you’ll need. For comparison, the best you can get on a business desktop computer is up to 14 USB ports. However, you can add more USB 2.0 ports for a fee.

The M900 also lacks a media card reader, which reads memory sticks and memory cards commonly used in phones, cameras and other handheld digital devices. You can add a media card reader prior to purchase, but it costs extra.

Expansion Potential

The ThinkCentre comes with a 250-watt power supply unit, which is enough to handle the installed components but lacks the overhead for expansion. For comparison, the best business computer in our review has a power supply unit of 460 watts with similar specifications. Without sufficient overhead, you’ll have to upgrade the power supply unit before installing any more components.

There are four expansion slots on the motherboard, with two internal drive bays and two external drive bays. These allow you to add more hard drives to increase storage or other devices needed for your business, like audio or video cards. But as mentioned, you need to upgrade the power supply unit if you add any components.

Help & Support

Lenovo has one of the best support systems for business computers, with one caveat the M900 only comes with a one-year warranty. However, Lenovo’s warranty covers parts, labor and on-site service. You can also customize your service and extend your warranty up to five years. These are vital support features for a business computer, because you can’t afford for your computer to break down.

The company offers additional support like asset recovery, online data backup and remote diagnosis. These services help you ensure your business’ vital information is always safe and accessible.

Summary

With an Intel i7-6700 quad-core processor, 8GB of memory and 1TB of storage, the Lenovo ThinkCentre M900 business computer is a high-performance machine with one of the best support systems available. The connectivity is subpar, and the expansion potential is hindered by a weak power supply unit, but these issues can be remedied with simple upgrades.     Most articles offering advice regarding profitable business ideas include lists of startup ideas like becoming a personal shopper, a consultant, a pet sitter, a virtual assistant, an interior designer.

    This is not that kind of article.

    Let’s go in a different direction. Here are my favorite ideas–ones you can still easily do this year, even though we’re well into 2016–that can save time, save money, and streamline your professional and personal life.

    The goal is to do less, so you can achieve more:

    1. Downsize your to-do list.

    A to-do list with 20 or 30 items is not just daunting–it’s depressing. Why start when there’s no way you can finish?

    Try this instead. First create a wish list: Use it to write down all the ideas, projects, tasks, etc. that occur to you. Make it your “would like to do” list.

    Then pick three or four items off that list that will make the most difference. Pick the easiest tasks to accomplish, or the ones with the biggest payoff, or the ones that will eliminate the most pain.

    Make that your to-do list. And then get it done.

    Then go back and pick three or four more.

    2. Get rid of one “permission.”

    You probably don’t think of it this way, but everything you do “trains” the people around you how to treat you. Let employees interrupt your meetings or phone calls because of “emergencies” and they’ll feel free to interrupt you any time. Drop what you’re doing every time someone calls and they’ll always expect immediate attention. Return emails immediately and people will always expect an immediate response.

    In short, your actions give other people permission to keep you from working the way you work best.

    A friend set up an “emergency” email account; he responds to those immediately. Otherwise, his employees know he only checks his “standard” email a couple times a day and they act accordingly.

    Figure out how you work best and “train” the people around you to let you be as productive as you possibly can be.

    3. Eliminate one report.

    You’re not reading most of them anyway. And neither are your employees.

    4. Eliminate one sign-off.

    I worked at a manufacturing plant where supervisors had to sign off on quality before a job could be run. Seemed strange to me–we trusted the operators to ensure jobs met standards throughout the run, so why couldn’t we trust them to know if a job met quality standards before they started running?

    You probably have at least one sign-off in place because, somewhere along the way, an employee made a major error, and you don’t want the same mistake to happen again. But in the process, you’ve reduced the amount of responsibility your employees feel for their own work, because you’ve inserted your authority into the process.

    Train, explain, trust–and remove yourself from processes where you don’t belong. (The same premise works at home, too.)

    5. Fire your worst customer (or worst employee ).

    You know the one: the high maintenance, low revenue, nonexistent-profits one.

    Start charging more, or providing less. If that’s not possible, fire that customer.

    6. Eliminate one expense.

    Right now, you’re spending money on something you don’t use, don’t need, or don’t want. But since you buy it. you feel you have to use it. I subscribed to a number of magazines (because subscribing is really cheap compared to buying at the newsstand).

    Great–but then the magazines show up. Then I have to read them. If I don’t, they sit around making me feel guilty.

    So I dropped three or four. I don’t miss them.

    Often the biggest savings in cutting an expense isn’t the actual cost; it’s the time involved in doing or maintaining or consuming whatever the expense represents.

    Pick one expense you can eliminate that will also free up time and effort. Your bottom line and your workday will thank you for it.

    7. Drop one personal commitment.

    We all do things simply because we feel we should. Maybe you volunteer because a friend asked you to, but you feel no real connection to the cause you support. Maybe you have a weekly lunch with some old friends but it feels more like a chore than a treat. Or maybe you keep trying to learn French just because once you started you didn’t want to feel like a quitter.

    Think about one thing you do out of habit, or because you think you’re supposed to, or simply because you don’t know how to get out of it–and then get out of it. The momentary pain–or, in some cases, confrontation–of stepping down, dropping out, or letting go will be replaced quickly by a huge sense relief.

    Then you can use that time to do something you feel has real meaning.

    Or just take a break.

    8. Optimize your lunch.

    You already make enough decisions. What to have for lunch shouldn’t be one of them.

    Pack tuna and a small salad. Pick something healthy, something simple, even something you can eat at your desk. Save the decision making for what’s really important.

    As a bonus, you’ll lose a little weight and feel a little better.

    9. Carve out consistent time to sit and think.

    Most small-business owners spend a lot more time reacting–to employee issues, customer requests, market conditions, etc.–than they do reflecting.

    Eliminate 20 or 30 minutes of reacting time by creating a little quiet time. Close your door and think. Better yet, go for a walk. Exercise does more to bolster thinking than thinking does; walking just 40 minutes three days a week builds new brain cells and improves memory functions.

    And don’t worry that something bad will happen while you’re gone–most of the time the issues you “avoid” will solve themselves.

    10. Remove one willpower drain.

    We all have a finite supply of willpower. Resisting temptation creates stress and eventually exhaustion.

    And then you give in.

    But if you don’t have to exercise willpower, you don’t drain your energy. Say you keep a bowl of candy for customers at the front desk. Every time you walk by you’re tempted to grab a piece, but you stand firm. Resisting tires you out, though, and in time you’ll be more susceptible to the candy’s charms.

    Get rid of the candy altogether. Then you don’t have to use any willpower at all. Pick something you have to resist–food, wasting time, Web browsing, checking social-media accounts–and eliminate the temptation.

    Discipline depletes. Discipline is exhausting. Stay fresh by removing the need for discipline altogether.

    11. Remove one category of decisions.

    Instead of making serial decisions, try making just one: Decide who will decide.

    Say you regularly need to decide whether to expedite shipping due to work-in-progress delays. Instead of being the go-to decision maker, pick someone in the organization who will make those decisions. Provide guidance, parameters, and advice, and turn that person loose. Then, check in periodically to see if they need more direction. That way, you get to spend time figuring out how to eliminate the delays instead of dealing with the repercussions.

    Almost every decision you currently make can be taken over by people you trust. How will you learn to trust them?

    Teach, train, guide, verify–and in time you will give your employees the authority and responsibility they not only earn, but deserve.

    While workforces have become far more mobile, there is still a need for the traditional office desktop PC. It remains the most cost-effective computing device as it’s easily maintained and has the most powerful solutions available on the market.

    Despite the drop in laptop prices and increase in mobile processor power, there are still distinct advantages to running desktop systems in an office environment, which is why the desktop remains the most popular form-factor for computer systems.

    Speaking of form factors, the desktop PC has evolved significantly over the past three years beyond the monoliths that mid or mini-towers are.

    The range of available desktop systems is as wide and varied as business needs themselves, ranging from a few off-the-shelf units for an SMB to the deployment of thousands of basic desktop PCs and everything in between.

    The types of desktop PCs

    A recent development in the desktop PC world has been a modest diversification of the system case. The typical business PC comes in a mini-tower box, which is probably best sited under or next to your desk.

    For many employers and brokers, the Affordable Care Act can feel like a moving target. However, for small groups with fewer than 50 employees who are not mandated to provide health insurance, the options for small group health insurance are clearer.

    In 2016, small groups have five main options for health insurance:

    Individual Health Insurance (with or without a defined contribution allowance)

    Private Small Group Plan

    1) Individual Health Insurance (with or without a defined contribution allowance)

    The first option is a relatively simple approach, yet it achieves results: allow employees to purchase individual health insurance coverage, either through the public Marketplace or through a broker. Employees may select from any carrier and plan available, and eligible employees may access discounts on their premiums via the individual health insurance tax credits.

    If the small group would like to contribute to employee’s premium expenses, they can use defined contribution allowances to reimburse employees for the non-subsidized portion of their premium. (This is still allowed as long as the employer goes about it the right way .)

    Additionally, defined contribution allowances can be allocated by job criteria (e.g. $300/month to managers and $200/month to entry-level). For many small groups, this is the most cost-effective solution because the small group can contribute any amount and, on average, individual policies cost less than small group plans.

    Brokers are generally involved to facilitate the setup of the defined contribution allowances (usually, via an online software provider), sell the individual policies to employees, and be a consultant for the small group. The ideal business for this solution is a small group who is priced out of group health insurance, not eligible for group health insurance, wants to start offering health benefits for the first time, or who doesn’t have the administrative capacity to administer a group health insurance plan.

    2) SHOP Marketplace

    The SHOP Marketplaces are public state- or federally-run exchanges which sell small group health insurance policies. The SHOP Marketplace could be a good coverage option for employers with 50 or fewer employees if they can meet certain requirements. For example, in Massachusetts employers participating in the SHOP must contribute at least 50 percent of the premium amount, employers with 1-5 employees must have 100 percent of the employees enrolled, and employers with 6-50 employees must have at least 75 percent enrolled.

    For eligible small groups, the SHOP Marketplace gives access to the small business tax credits which are generally only available through the SHOP. Brokers registered with the Marketplace can help small groups select and purchase the plan, just as brokers would with private small group plans.

    3) Private Health Exchange

    Like defined contribution, the term “private exchange” is one of the biggest buzzwords of the past few years. With a private exchange the small group gives employees a set contribution to use towards a menu of plan options. The plan options can be individual- or group-based. Private exchanges are a type of a defined contribution strategy.

    Brokers can offer a private exchange option to small groups by working with a defined contribution or private exchange provider. Numerous entities ranging from startups to new divisions of leading insurance companies have been created to offer new private health exchanges and companies like Walgreens are adopting this approach.     4) Co-Op

    Joining a co-op for health insurance is a more traditional approach for small groups. The idea is the co-op increases buying power and spreads the risk to a larger group. Each co-op is structured differently, and whether the co-op offers better insurance rates than the small group could get on the open market or SHOP depends on regional insurance underwriting laws and the co-op itself.

    5) Private Small Group Plan

    Purchasing a private small group plan is also still an option for small groups. Small groups may find more options and carriers to choose from on the private market as compared to the SHOP, where some states only have one or two plans to choose from.     The Future of Small Group Health Insurance?

    Every day I hear from small business owners and their brokers about the challenges of a traditional small group health insurance plan – with the primary challenge being cost. As such, it is not surprising to hear that only half (54 percent ) of small and medium sized businesses do not offer traditional insurance today.

    Which is why I’d argue that #1 (individual health insurance with defined contribution allowances) and #2 (private exchanges paired with individual health insurance) are the best health insurance options for small groups in 2016.

    The Dell OptiPlex 9020 comes in four form factors, which gives you plenty of sizes to choose from to fit your office’s needs. We reviewed the largest, because it gives you the most power and opportunity to grow with your business. The quad-core 3.6GHz processor offers a lot of power to multitask and run all your necessary programs. However, the power supply unit is below average, which means you may need to upgrade it if you add components later.

    To determine the best business computers. performance was the priority. To evaluate performance, we looked at the processor’s PassMark score, an industry benchmarking score submitted by actual users. Then we analyzed the RAM and storage, followed by connectivity and expansion potential. The best business computer must be able to handle all of your necessary apps without slowing down, and it needs to be able to store all of your files. As a result, the Dell OptiPlex is among the best business computers available.

    8011.40 PassMark Score

    The best aspect of the OptiPlex 9020 is the processor, which is an Intel Core i7-4790. This processor has an 8-MB cache and a base speed of 3.6GHz. The PassMark score is 10,017. This is among the highest scores in our review. The highest is 11,000. This score indicates that the processor is easily capable of handling significant multitasking and data-intensive tasks.

    We determined that 6,000 was the minimum PassMark score for a processor to have a sufficient multitasking abilities. Since an increase of 3,000 in a score is reflective of an exponential increase in processing abilities, the i7-4790 is more than twice as powerful as the minimum passable requirement.

    The OptiPlex 9020 has 8GB of memory, which is standard for an office PC. This is enough RAM to ensure your business can multitask without experiencing dips in performance. Most business-related software isn’t data-intensive, so 8GB of RAM gives you ample room to run many programs at once. The one downside is that you can’t upgrade the memory before purchase, which is important if you use data-intensive programs like 3D rendering or video editing software. However, you can manually install up to 64 GB of RAM to the motherboard, which gives you a lot of flexibility for future growth.

    The hard drive has 500GB of storage, which is disappointing. Most business computers start at 1TB of storage. However, if you deal with videos, graphics and audio, then you can upgrade to a 2-TB hard drive. With four expansion slots, you have the ability to manually install additional hard drives as needed.

    With eight USB 2.0 ports and four USB 3.0 ports, you have many options for plugging in external devices like flash drives, scanners and card readers. Most electronic devices that communicate with a computer connect via a USB port. USB 2.0 is still the most commonly used USB port, but USB 3.0 is the fastest connection.

    A downside to the OptiPlex 9020 is the 290-watt power supply unit. The best business computers have a power supply unit rated between 460 and 490 watts. This is important for adding components like extra hard drives and optical drives. A weak power supply unit limits the computer’s ability to expand with the needs of your business. Fortunately, you can upgrade the power supply.

    Summary

    The Dell OptiPlex 9020 is a powerful business computer because it comes with a quad-core processor and 8GB of memory. However, it only has a 500-GB hard drive, and the power supply unit is on the weak side. This small business computer performs, but it lacks the storage and expansion potential of the best PCs in our review.

    Most articles offering advice regarding profitable business ideas include lists of startup ideas like becoming a personal shopper, a consultant, a pet sitter, a virtual assistant, an interior designer.

    This is not that kind of article.

    Let’s go in a different direction. Here are my favorite ideas–ones you can still easily do this year, even though we’re well into 2016–that can save time, save money, and streamline your professional and personal life.

    The goal is to do less, so you can achieve more:

    1. Downsize your to-do list.

    A to-do list with 20 or 30 items is not just daunting–it’s depressing. Why start when there’s no way you can finish?

    Try this instead. First create a wish list: Use it to write down all the ideas, projects, tasks, etc. that occur to you. Make it your “would like to do” list.

    Then pick three or four items off that list that will make the most difference. Pick the easiest tasks to accomplish, or the ones with the biggest payoff, or the ones that will eliminate the most pain.

    Make that your to-do list. And then get it done.

    Then go back and pick three or four more.

    2. Get rid of one “permission.”

    You probably don’t think of it this way, but everything you do “trains” the people around you how to treat you. Let employees interrupt your meetings or phone calls because of “emergencies” and they’ll feel free to interrupt you any time. Drop what you’re doing every time someone calls and they’ll always expect immediate attention. Return emails immediately and people will always expect an immediate response.

    In short, your actions give other people permission to keep you from working the way you work best.

    A friend set up an “emergency” email account; he responds to those immediately. Otherwise, his employees know he only checks his “standard” email a couple times a day and they act accordingly.

    Figure out how you work best and “train” the people around you to let you be as productive as you possibly can be.

    3. Eliminate one report.

    You’re not reading most of them anyway. And neither are your employees.

    4. Eliminate one sign-off.

    I worked at a manufacturing plant where supervisors had to sign off on quality before a job could be run. Seemed strange to me–we trusted the operators to ensure jobs met standards throughout the run, so why couldn’t we trust them to know if a job met quality standards before they started running?

    You probably have at least one sign-off in place because, somewhere along the way, an employee made a major error, and you don’t want the same mistake to happen again. But in the process, you’ve reduced the amount of responsibility your employees feel for their own work, because you’ve inserted your authority into the process.

    Train, explain, trust–and remove yourself from processes where you don’t belong. (The same premise works at home, too.)

    5. Fire your worst customer (or worst employee ).

    You know the one: the high maintenance, low revenue, nonexistent-profits one.

    Start charging more, or providing less. If that’s not possible, fire that customer.

    6. Eliminate one expense.

    Right now, you’re spending money on something you don’t use, don’t need, or don’t want. But since you buy it. you feel you have to use it. I subscribed to a number of magazines (because subscribing is really cheap compared to buying at the newsstand).

    Great–but then the magazines show up. Then I have to read them. If I don’t, they sit around making me feel guilty.

    So I dropped three or four. I don’t miss them.

    Often the biggest savings in cutting an expense isn’t the actual cost; it’s the time involved in doing or maintaining or consuming whatever the expense represents.

    Pick one expense you can eliminate that will also free up time and effort. Your bottom line and your workday will thank you for it.

    7. Drop one personal commitment.

    We all do things simply because we feel we should. Maybe you volunteer because a friend asked you to, but you feel no real connection to the cause you support. Maybe you have a weekly lunch with some old friends but it feels more like a chore than a treat. Or maybe you keep trying to learn French just because once you started you didn’t want to feel like a quitter.

    Think about one thing you do out of habit, or because you think you’re supposed to, or simply because you don’t know how to get out of it–and then get out of it. The momentary pain–or, in some cases, confrontation–of stepping down, dropping out, or letting go will be replaced quickly by a huge sense relief.

    Then you can use that time to do something you feel has real meaning.

    Or just take a break.

    8. Optimize your lunch.

    You already make enough decisions. What to have for lunch shouldn’t be one of them.

    Pack tuna and a small salad. Pick something healthy, something simple, even something you can eat at your desk. Save the decision making for what’s really important.

    As a bonus, you’ll lose a little weight and feel a little better.

    9. Carve out consistent time to sit and think.

    Most small-business owners spend a lot more time reacting–to employee issues, customer requests, market conditions, etc.–than they do reflecting.

    Eliminate 20 or 30 minutes of reacting time by creating a little quiet time. Close your door and think. Better yet, go for a walk. Exercise does more to bolster thinking than thinking does; walking just 40 minutes three days a week builds new brain cells and improves memory functions.

    And don’t worry that something bad will happen while you’re gone–most of the time the issues you “avoid” will solve themselves.

    10. Remove one willpower drain.

    We all have a finite supply of willpower. Resisting temptation creates stress and eventually exhaustion.

    And then you give in.

    But if you don’t have to exercise willpower, you don’t drain your energy. Say you keep a bowl of candy for customers at the front desk. Every time you walk by you’re tempted to grab a piece, but you stand firm. Resisting tires you out, though, and in time you’ll be more susceptible to the candy’s charms.

    Get rid of the candy altogether. Then you don’t have to use any willpower at all. Pick something you have to resist–food, wasting time, Web browsing, checking social-media accounts–and eliminate the temptation.

    Discipline depletes. Discipline is exhausting. Stay fresh by removing the need for discipline altogether.

    11. Remove one category of decisions.

    Instead of making serial decisions, try making just one: Decide who will decide.

    Say you regularly need to decide whether to expedite shipping due to work-in-progress delays. Instead of being the go-to decision maker, pick someone in the organization who will make those decisions. Provide guidance, parameters, and advice, and turn that person loose. Then, check in periodically to see if they need more direction. That way, you get to spend time figuring out how to eliminate the delays instead of dealing with the repercussions.

    Almost every decision you currently make can be taken over by people you trust. How will you learn to trust them?

    Teach, train, guide, verify–and in time you will give your employees the authority and responsibility they not only earn, but deserve.

Sure it doesn’t have the latest CPU or a touchscreen but that probably won’t matter for the audience the X240 is aimed at.

Other than this, the B51 is a very decent all-rounder that hits almost all the right notes: from the powerful CPU to the full HD display and the discrete GPU.

    Dell’s decision to bypass the E7460 series to launch an E7470 left a few analysts puzzled but the PC vendor managed to deliver a magnificent piece of kit which it says is the most secure, most reliable and most manageable business-class laptop. It does come at a hefty price though and compared to the competition, this notebook may feel underwhelming. However, Dell’s forte lies in its services and aftersales.

    Buying an Internet Business Why 2016 is the Year to Buy

    The start of a new year is always a natural time of year to make plans for the future. be it personally or professionally. It’s a good time to take stock of previous experience and think about what’s taking place in the world. Indeed, you don’t have to look too far for predictions posts at the moment, the internet is positively awash with musings about the year ahead with many exciting internet marketing trends predicted (mobile, the internet of things and as ever, more content marketing!)

    Strangely though there is not much in the way of thoughts on business buying in 2016,particularly for buying an internet business. so I’ve put some thoughts together on why 2016 is potentially a very timely year to buy.

    Buying an internet business – macro favors the opportunist

    There’s so much uncertainty in both the US and global economy at the moment that you can carve a pretty convincing argument either way for economic collapse or prosperity in 2016 (presumably that’s how Wall Street analysts keep in business come high or low…)

    I think though that when it comes to small business ownership there is strong cause for optimism this year. Consumer confidence has continued to climb through 2016 to the mid 90 s. Good news for consumer facing e-businesses.

    Investment levels always tell you something about the market’s sentiment toward both the economy and small business growth. Whilst you shouldn’t always follow the herd it’s important to note we operate in an economy based largely on consent, so if everyone else is investing it’s a good sign for personal acquisitions. US venture capital investment continue to grow year over year, and 2015 saw the largest amount of investment dollars.

    Lastly, borrowing is an essential component for acquisition and growth and it’s refreshing to see that whilst SBA lending softened a little in 2014 to $3.8bn (from $4.0bn in 2013), the lender is anticipating a huge boost in 2015 to $4.8bn. If you’re looking to debt finance an internet business acquisition, 2016 could well be the year to do it.

    A word of warning though, it can still be quite difficult to secure debt financing for online business acquisitions. SaaS businesses and recurring revenue models that have at least three years of history tend to be the most successful candidates for funding, though cash buyers will continue to have pole position in 2016.     Surging internet growth continues

    The nice thing about most internet trends is that they almost always face upwards which makes the old Chinese proverb of “the best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago, the second best time is now” true at the start of almost every year.

    E-commerce continues to be one of the biggest areas of internet growth and eMarketer expects the global E-commerce industry to increase another $263bn in 2015 to $1.763trn (yes trillion), all boding very well for site owners and potential business acquirers.

    Content sites will not miss out on a continued surge in internet usage as multi-device and particularly mobile usage make the web a major source of advertising dollars. Internet advertising revenues continue to rise with spending up across every single sector. from 5% YoY in entertainment to 20% YoY in retail. Digital advertising revenue is now worth more than $40bn in the US alone (as of 2014), second only to TV, and rising at 15% per annum (5x faster than any other medium).

    It’s not just the growth opportunities that are appearing in the internet investment landscape, the risk factors are somewhat fading too. Many online business acquirers are cautious of pending Google algorithm updates particularly when looking at websites with high search traffic (and they are wise to be). With the last 18 months seeing an unprecedented amount of algorithm changes. things have now started to calm and the industry is expecting a smoother runway in 2016.

    That’s not to say there won’t be movement but there is much less concern over 20% single-day traffic falls as we saw with the Penguin and Panda rollouts in 2013 and 2014. The good news for site buyers is that investors now have the pick of sites that are still standing after the updates and they also have some runway ahead before Google consider another major algorithm update.

    Mobile is an explosive opportunity

    A major part of the trends above is the continued penetration of smartphones across the US, Western Europe and Asia as well as the proliferation of multi-device. Multi-device ownership is increasingly commonplace in developed markets with 1 in 4 smartphone owners in the US and EU5 also owning a tablet.

    Almost every internet marketing predictions post is citing mobile’s importance this year and its clear from listings at FEI that site owners who have mobile-optimised their sites (at the least) or built new service or content offerings around mobile, are very well positioned for selling. With Google putting greater emphasis on the mobile user experience, potentially even incorporating “mobile-friendliness” into its search ranking algorithm, mobile-friendly is now essential.

    Digi-Capital predict 61.3% CAGR of revenue growth in mobile app revenue (ex-gaming) to 2017 which is a staggering growth rate and a huge growth opportunity for buyers of e-businesses and apps in 2016 and beyond. Advertisers worldwide are recognizing the increasing penetration of mobile and its impact on consumers, and in response, plan to spend more than $64bn on mobile ads in 2015. 60% higher than 2014.

    Favorable industry trends

    Thomas and I wrote about industry trends at the end of 2015 and we think they are aligning positively for buyers. Whilst there’s undoubtedly more buyers in the industry than ever before, the market is formalizing and this can only be a good thing for raising industry standards amongst brokers, sellers and other industry participants alike.

    An exciting new development has been the launch of Escrow’s new domain name holding service in 2014 which has dramatically increased the scope for creatively financed deals in 2016. With domain(s) held in Escrow during the deferred consideration period there is much less fear about payment default, which warms sellers to the idea of earn outs, holdbacks and other financing methods. All of this is great news for buyers looking to stretch out their funds or structures deals for lower risk.

    Speaking of formalisation, the website buying industry definitely embraced content marketing in the past few years and we have seen a marked increase in content posting by brokers, marketplaces and industry commentators alike. Centurica now publish an annual website buying report and its co-founder Justin Gilchrist also published an in-depth primer on business buying.

    Trading and investing in penny stocks requires special skills attuned to unique price action at the low-end of the market’s value spectrum. The SEC defines penny stocks as stocks that trade for less than $5, so when trading penny stocks, aggressive risk management is needed because many of these low-priced equities have descended from much higher levels for good reasons that include declining earnings, sector headwinds, and accounting blow-ups.     That said, not all low-priced stocks are bad. It’s a different story for up-and-coming companies listed at low prices on national exchanges because they often go public with limited revenues, but excellent growth potential, or at least a bullish story that will attract healthy speculation. Even so, there are no guarantees they’ll prosper in the competitive marketplace so aggressive risk management is needed to avoid significant or unexpected losses. While low-priced stocks are risky, they can produce handsome yields. Below are five penny stocks to watch this September.

    1. Birks Group Inc. ( BGI )

    Montreal-based Birks Group Inc. (BGI ) sells jewelry and other luxury products through 26 retail outfits in Canada and the United States. This is an old company founded in 1879, but it just listed on the NYSE in 2006. A quick rally into 2007 posted an all-time high at 9.13, ahead of a steep plunge that finally came to rest at 20-cents in March 2009. A recovery wave into 2010 stalled above 2.00, yielding sideways action ahead of a successful test at the bear market low in February 2016.

    The stock took off in a high volume rally after the company reported an unexpected profit in July, rising more than 300% in a single session and dropping into a consolidation pattern that just broke support at the .618 Fibonacci rally retracement at 2.20. On Balance Volume (OBV) indicates shareholders are hanging tough, raising odds for renewed buying interest when price nears the confluence of the rising 200-day exponential moving average(EMA ) and .786 retracement at 1.42.

    2. MGT Capital Investments Inc. ( MGT )

    MGT Capital Investments Inc. ( MGT ) develops mobile and online gaming technology. It came public in 2006 at 167 (post a 15 for 1 stock split in 2012) and entered an immediate downtrend that lasted for more than ten years, dropping the stock to 15-cents in January 2016. It ground sideways into May and took off in a vertical rally that added more than 5 points into a three-year high at 5.58.

    A quick decline to 2.27 got bought, with that level offering support in the last three months. The sideways action has drawn the outline of a symmetrical triangle that could yield a fresh rally wave into double digits. The stock is now trading in the dead center of the pattern and needs to rally above the August 5 high at 3.74 to set a breakout into motion. A September 8 shareholder meeting could offer a catalyst for that buying wave.

    3. Gold Standard Ventures Corp. ( GSV )

    Canadian junior miner, Gold Standard Ventures Corp. (GSV ) ended a strong uptrend at 3.05 in May 2012 and entered a steep downtrend that finally ended at 26-cents in July 2015, well ahead of the December low posted by the gold futures contract. The subsequent uptick eased into a rising channel in November, with price gains continuing into July when dropped into a pullback that tested the 50-day EMA. Aggressive buyers emerged, lifting the stock 15-cents above the 2012 high, to 3.20 and its highest high since listing on the U.S. exchanges in 2010.

    This level marks major resistance, predicting a consolidation period before a breakout drives the stock to much higher ground. Watch the rising 50-day EMA for buying interest just above 2.00, with that level now aligned closely with the August 10 gap between 1.96 and 2.06. It may take a gap fill to bring prospective shareholders off the sidelines.

    4. Northern Dynasty Minerals Ltd. ( NAK )

    Northern Dynasty Minerals Ltd. ( NAK ). also based in Vancouver, Canada has been listed on the NYSE since October 2003, when it came public at 2.83. A rally into 2007 posted a top at 15.61, ahead of a steep decline during the 2008 to 2009 bear market. It bottomed out at 1.69, with the bounce finally reaching 2007 resistance in 2012, ahead of a breakout that posted an all-time high at 21.76 in 2011.

    The subsequent downtrend may have finally ended at 20-cents in January 2016, with price action since that time carving an Elliott 5-wave pattern that’s lifted price to a two-year high at 1.16. It’s been pulling back for the last week and could drop as low as the 50-day EMA, currently rising from 61-cents, before gathering the buying interest needed to test the high and start the next leg of the trend advance.

    5. TOP Ships, Inc. ( TOPS )

    Greek shipper, TOP Ships, Inc. (TOPS ) has struggled since coming public on U.S. exchanges in 2004, posting four reverse splits that now set its first-day value at an astounding 14238. It entered a massive downtrend just four months after public listing, falling to an all-time low at 13-cents in January 2016. It ground sideways into February and went vertical, rising from 21-cents to 3.00 in a single session, after completing another reverse split.

    A sideways pattern gave way to an early August breakout above the March high at 4.44, with the stock rising above 8 and then reversing sharply. It’s now filling the August 1 gap, which is located just under the breakout level at 4.44. The 50-day EMA is rising toward falling price and could provide the support needed to generate a strong bounce that sets the stage for a rally into double digits.

    The Bottom Line

    The low-priced, penny stock universe includes both beaten down entries and newly-minted start-ups hoping to become the next Microsoft Corp. ( MSFT ) or Alphabet Inc. (GOOGL ). It’s important to keep in mind that secondary offerings, warrants. and other financing games pose a significant risk with stocks under $5.00. Since low revenues force many of these companies to issue stock repeatedly or enter sweetheart deals with big investors, who will get paid before public investors when the company finally grows, and the stock’s valuation expands.     Many office PC brands are marketed to both consumers and businesses, but the HP EliteDesk 800 series is designed specifically for small and medium-sized businesses. The cost-effective design makes it a great option if you need multiple computers for your business. However, while the processor is adequate for multitasking with a lot of business-oriented software, it lacks the power you’d find in the best business computers .

    For our review of business computers, we looked primarily at the processor for performance. To do this, we used the PassMark score of the processor, which is a user-submitted score based on industry benchmarking tests. Then we analyzed the RAM and the storage. The best business computers should provide excellent performance with sufficient storage. Finally, we evaluated the chassis’ connectivity and expansion potential, as you should get an office PC that can expand with the needs of your business.

    The HP EliteDesk 800’s processor is the Intel i5-6500, which is a quad-core processor with a 6MB cache and 3.6GHz speed. In the PassMark benchmark tests, this processer has a score of 7,035, which is well-above the passable mark of 6,000. This means this desktop has sufficient processing power to multitask with most business apps. However, the highest PassMark score in our review is 11,000. A difference of 3,000 in a PassMark score is generally considered to be exponential, meaning that the best processor in our review is more than twice as good as this processor at multitasking and processing data.

    The EliteDesk also lacks a dedicated graphics card, which means that the graphics are integrated with the i5-6500 processor. This computer will struggle to handle data-intensive graphics programs like AutoCAD. However, you can upgrade the processor and add a dedicated graphics card prior to purchase, though at a significant cost.

    You get 4GB of memory and a 500-GB hard drive, which is disappointing. While 4GB of RAM is plenty for most business apps like Microsoft Office and Excel, 8GB of memory is the preferred standard. Also, the best office PC has at least 1TB of storage. The best business computer in our review, the Dell XPS 8900, comes with 16GB of RAM. However, you can upgrade the memory to 8GB, and you can upgrade the storage to 4TB. In addition, the motherboard can support up to 64GB of RAM, though you have to manually install the memory yourself.

    The motherboard has four expansion slots, which is standard. This allows you to add hard drives or other devices, like upgraded audio or video cards. In addition, eight USB 3.0 ports and two USB 2.0 ports give you plenty of ways to connect external devices like card scanners and printers. These features make the EliteDesk an office PC that can grow with your business. When you need more out of your business computer, you can add the necessary hardware.

    Another downside to the HP EliteDesk 800 G1 is the lack of some important support services with HP. While you get a three-year warranty that covers labor and parts, HP doesn’t have asset-recovery services, online backup or remote diagnostic services. These are important services, because your business computer is a critical aspect of your business. If it fails or you’re having trouble with some components, it affects your business.

    Summary

    The HP EliteDesk 800 has the quad-core processor and memory necessary to make sure that your computer doesn’t slow down while multitasking with basic software, but the Intel Core i5-6500 processor has a middling PassMark score of 7,035. The 4GB of RAM and 500GB hard drive is disappointing, but you can easily add more hard drives as needed to fit your business needs.     The Business Studies pathway of the BA(Hons) Economic and Social Studies degree – or BA(Econ) for short – is a flexible and innovative course that brings together research-led teaching from Accounting, Business, Economics, Finance, Politics and Sociology and offers in-depth insight into the business world.

    Business doesn’t work in isolation and at Manchester neither does the study of it.

    Only by understanding the environment in which businesses function can you understand commercial behaviour. For example:

    2016 is a great time to start exploring the web in search of just the right idea for you, and browsing a long list of different, unusual and sometimes downright weird ideas is a great way to spark your own imagination.

    VERDICT / The Dell OptiPlex 9020 has an excellent processor and sufficient memory to run all your critical business software, but it lacks many upgrades and the option to add components.

    The Dell OptiPlex 9020 comes in four form factors, which gives you plenty of sizes to choose from to fit your office’s needs. We reviewed the largest, because it gives you the most power and opportunity to grow with your business. The quad-core 3.6GHz processor offers a lot of power to multitask and run all your necessary programs. However, the power supply unit is below average, which means you may need to upgrade it if you add components later.

    To determine the best business computers. performance was the priority. To evaluate performance, we looked at the processor’s PassMark score, an industry benchmarking score submitted by actual users. Then we analyzed the RAM and storage, followed by connectivity and expansion potential. The best business computer must be able to handle all of your necessary apps without slowing down, and it needs to be able to store all of your files. As a result, the Dell OptiPlex is among the best business computers available.

The one downside is that you can’t upgrade the memory before purchase, which is important if you use data-intensive programs like 3D rendering or video editing software. However, you can manually install up to 64 GB of RAM to the motherboard, which gives you a lot of flexibility for future growth.

    The hard drive has 500GB of storage, which is disappointing. Most business computers start at 1TB of storage. However, if you deal with videos, graphics and audio, then you can upgrade to a 2-TB hard drive. With four expansion slots, you have the ability to manually install additional hard drives as needed.

    With eight USB 2.0 ports and four USB 3.0 ports, you have many options for plugging in external devices like flash drives, scanners and card readers.
