Nationally, there were 1,250,822 active businesses with employees in June.

In addition, there were 2,586,343 active businesses without employees and with annual revenues greater than $30,000.

Note to readers

Canadian business count s p reviously called Canadian business pattern s p rovide counts of active businesses by industry classification and employment-size categories for Canada and the provinces and territories. Canadian business counts are based on the same criteria that were used to calculate Canadian business patterns. Data are available in CANSIM tables 552-0002 and 553-0002.

The counts are compiled from the Business Register, Statistics Canada’s central listing of Canadian businesses. They are based on the statistical concept of ‘location ‘ that is, each operating location is separately counted, including cases where one business comprises multiple locations. For example, a retail business with 10 stores represents 10 businesses in the Canadian business counts. Generally, among Canadian businesses, 99% are single-location enterprises.

Changes to the Business Register’s methodology or business industrial classification strategies can bring about increases or decreases in the number of active businesses reported in the Canadian business counts. As a result, the data do not represent changes in the business population over time. Statistics Canada recommends users not to use the data as a time series.


Custom extractions for other geographic levels can be ordered on a cost-recovery basis. Data prior to December 2011 are also available upon request on a cost-recovery basis.

    How Do I Know If I m Qualified to Be a Business Analyst?

    Are you exploring a career in as a business analyst? Do you find yourself wondering if your skills and experience are relevant to a business analyst role? Would you be interested in learning about how qualified you are to be a business analyst?

    We re going to talk about how to know if you are qualified to be a business analyst, but first I m going to share a funny story with you.

    (Before I forget, I want to be sure you know about my step-by-step BA career planning course (it’s free) that’s designed to help you, the mid-career professional, kick-start your business analysis career. The course will help you dig deeper into each of the concepts outlined below.)

    Just last week, the night before my birthday, I walked down the short flight of stairs after putting our daughter to bed. I smiled at my husband. He was making an odd expression. I continued to look more deeply at him to figure out why.

    I walked over to where he was sitting and said, What s that goofy face for?

    He says, You didn t see it, did you?

    Me: See what?

    He shifts his eyes back toward the stairs. On the ledge we have right in front of our stairway were a dozen yellow roses laying out in plain sight.

    I couldn t believe I had completely missed them. For a split second, I even starting thinking that just maybe my husband tele-ported them there, but then I remembered the laws of physics and found my own eyes to be the culprit.

    I was looking at my husband and his funny expression instead of what was right in front of me.

    This same sort of thing happens to all of us, all of the time. We often don t see what can be obvious to other people or even what other people expect we should obviously be seeing. In all the work I do with professionals transitioning into the BA profession, the most prevalent problem I see is that they overlook significant relevant and transferable skills from their own career background.

    As a result, their answer to the question, Am I qualified to be a business analyst? is a resounding no when it should be a yes or at least a some of the time . (And as we ll see in a bit, some of the time can be a very effective path to business analysis.)

    Today, I d like to help you see the bouquet of roses waiting for you on the ledge at the bottom of the stairs. And to do that we need to look at the concept of transferable skills.

    What are Transferable Business Analyst Skills?

    Transferable skills are skills that you’ve built through experiences in your past roles. In the context of business analysis, transferable skills are BA techniques you’ve used in non-BA jobs or soft skills you’ve developed in perhaps unrelated roles.

    Transferable skills can help you skip past entry-level business analyst positions. This is especially important because there tend to be very few entry-level business analyst positions. And those savored few entry-level positions tend to favor recent college graduates without the salary requirements of an experienced professional.

    If you do have even a few years of professional experience, and a fair amount of the 42 reasons to become a business analyst resonate with you, then you have transferable skills. Getting clear and confident about them is part of your path to success as a business analyst and figuring out what roles you qualify for.

    But What Business Analyst Qualifications Are Transferable?

    When transitioning to business analysis, there are many areas in which to look for your business analyst qualifications. A good first step is to review our list of core business analysis skills that are important for a new business analyst and start mapping your experience to these skill areas.

    Here s a rundown of what you can expect to find during this process:

    • The core business analyst skills. those you might find mapped out in the Business Analysis Body of Knowledge® (BABOK®). will help you get past the screening process for a business analyst role. Any given hiring manager tends to have a checklist of key qualifications they absolutely want to have met by a potential candidate. And even if your experience is informal. it s likely that you can map it to a more formal deliverable or analysis technique. Use the BA terms (appropriately) in your resume and in a job interview and you ll increase your chances of qualifying yourself for a business analyst role.
    • Although managers screen for a specific set of core business analyst skills, they often hire for soft skills. such as relationship-building and the ability to communicate with a diverse set of stakeholders from the business and technical communities. Understanding the key soft skills you bring to the table is critical. Being able to speak to specific experiences where you used those soft skills in a BA context (or close to BA context) can increase the number of BA jobs you ll qualify for.
    • Then there will be skills that set you apart as a candidate and qualify you for specific types of BA positions. These vary widely from technical skills, to specific business domain knowledge, to experience with specific types of business applications.

    What Do I Do with My List of Business Analyst Qualifications?

    Even with a list of transferable business analyst qualifications in hand, a transitioning BA can get understandably frustrated. What business analyst roles do these skills qualify you for? It can often seem as if the grass is greener on the other side of the proverbial fence .

    • If you don t have an IT background, it can seem as if every possible BA job you look at requires some obscure technical skill you have no interest in building.
    • If you do have an IT background, but no business experience, it can see as if every possible BA job you look at requires business domain experience.

    While you will most likely find that the number of roles you aren t qualified for outweigh the number of roles you do qualify for, your career background will qualify you very strongly for a specific set business analyst jobs .

    • If you have a technical background. consider BA roles that include systems analysis responsibilities or blend selected IT duties with a business analyst role. Your experience with specific technologies could qualify you for specific BA roles.
    • If you have a business background from a specific functional area (such as customer service, human resources, or finance), consider BA roles working on the business applications with which you are familiar or supporting this area of the company. Your familiarity with the terminology and processes for that functional area could qualify you for specific BA roles.
    • If you have deep experience in a specific industry. consider business analyst roles in that industry. Your understanding of the industry environment, terminology, and core processes could qualify you for specific BA roles.

    To sum things up, the answer to the question about whether or not you are qualified to be a business analyst requires a bit of analysis. First, you must discover your business analyst skills. Then you want to map them to the types of roles you see in your local job market. Most likely, you will find yourself to be very qualified for some roles, partially qualified for others, and not at all qualified for still others (and this last set will most likely be the biggest, and that s true even for BAs with formal experience).

    With this information in hand, you can decide how and if to move forward in your BA career. And keep in mind, just like those I work with on their career transitions, it s quite possible and actually very likely that you have more relevant experience than you think, and you won t realize what those qualifications are until you go through a skills discovery process .

According to the SBA, this number rose to 14.6 percent in 2012 in part because of the growing Hispanic population in the U.S.

    As with their non-minority counterparts, proper access to funding is crucial for the creation, growth, and sustainability of their businesses. Although minority business ownership is growing, there continues to be great disparities in their access to business funding. In their effort to even the playing field, minority business owners continue to search for various funding resources.

    Grants for Minority Business

    Federal Grants

    As part of their quest for funding, the first choice for minority business owners is to seek out grants. The belief that there are federal grants available for the start up and growth phases for small businesses is a myth. The federal government does not provide grants to businesses for start up, expansion, to cover operational expenses, or to pay off debts. However there are federal grants available in the areas of research in the fields of medicine, scientific research, education, and technology development. Here are a few such grants.

    1. Small Business Innovation Research(SBIR)/Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) – This grant is for the purpose of funding small business projects that are research related. Research areas include the U.S. Department of Health and Human Service (HHS), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).     2. The USDA Rural Business Enterprise Grant (RBEG) Program – The purpose of this grant is to finance the development of small and emerging businesses in rural areas. The amount of the award ranges from $10,000 to $50,000.

The program assists qualifying minority-owned businesses develop and growth through one on one counseling, training workshops, management, and technical assistance.

    The 8(a) program has been designed for some minority groups that are considered socially and economically disadvantaged.     SBA 504 Rates for the August 2016

    The 504 loan rate (effective rate) for 20 year commercial real estate loans is 4.08% * The effective rate is inclusive of all servicing fees. (Some lenders do not advertise the all inclusive rate, so you may see the rate advertised slightly lower in some areas of the country).

    The 504 program consists of 2 loans:

    1. first mortgage for approx 50% of the project cost
  • 504 second mortgage guaranteed by the SBA (this is the rate referenced above).
  • SBA 7a Loan Rates

    SBA 7a rates can be either fixed or variable.

    The 25 year fixed rate is very competitive and never adjusts. These loans are available if the majority of the loan proceeds are used for commercial real estate. The underwriting can be a little tougher than for a variable rate, but this is a phenomenal opportunity to lock in great low rates for the long term if you qualify.

    Variable rates are typicallyPrime + a margin not to exceed 2.75% , The margin is set by the lender based on their cost of funds and the quality of the loan. Most lenders will offer something between Prime + 1.25% and Prime + 2.75%. 7a loans can also be based on the one month LIBOR rate.

    The SBA 7a is also a great solution for business acquisitions as well as refinancing of business debt or partner buyouts and the rates can be fixed or variable for up to 10 years.

    504 Loan Rates

    First Mortgage Rates:
    Currently range from high 3% range to as much as 6.5% depending on loan size, term, property type and strength of transaction and are typically amortized for 20 to 25 years and in some cases as long as 30 years.

    First mortgage rates and terms will vary depending on the type and size of the loan with the 5 year fixed rate/25 year amortization being the most common. After the initial 5 years the loan could adjust as frequently as monthly or as infrequently as every 5 years depending on the lender.

    SBA 504 Refinance Rates may be slightly higher and multi-purpose property rates are typically lower than single or special use properties like hotels or self storage properties.

    There is also a low rate SBA fixed rate option available for multi-use properties and some special use/single purpose properties for the first mortgage portion of the 504 program. The loan is fixed for the entire term of the 25 year first mortgage.

    The rates for this program are very competitive and when combined with the low rate second mortgage it makes for very attractive fully fixed long term rates.
    (The rate for the first mortgage will vary depending on loan size, prepayment penalty, etc).

    Again, this program is a true fixed rate that will never adjust . so while the rate may be higher than the 5 year fixed and other options, this loan is the better choice if you intend to own your property for the long haul.

    Job growth slowed down last month, according to the latest official economic data. Employers added 151,000 jobs in August, below expectations and down significantly from the 275,000 jobs added in July. Still, the longer-term trend is stable. After accounting for revisions, the job market has now grown by an average of 232,000 per month over the past three months. That number will likely figure prominently in the Federal Reserve’s debate over whether or not to raise interest rates after its next meeting, which concludes on September 21 .

    Meanwhile, earnings news sent a few stocks sharply lower even as broader indexes rose. These include Verifone (NYSE:PAY ) and Lululemon (NASDAQ:LULU ). which both posted double-digit losses on Friday.

    Verifone was one of the market’s biggest losers, slumping 16% following disappointing quarterly results. The payments solutions specialist’s sales turned surprisingly negative, with revenue slipping 3% to $493 million. In contrast, CEO Paul Galant and his executive team had projected $515 million of sales. “Q3 was a challenging quarter for Verifone on revenues,” Galant said in a press release on Friday. The good news is that profitability held up, and cost cuts allowed the company to hit its earnings target. Verifone managed a 7% boost in EPS.

    However, there appear to be persistent challenges surrounding the rollout of the EMV payment platform that handles chip-enabled credit cards. These will continue into the current quarter, Verifone warned, and will be a drag on growth. As a result, full-year revenue will stop at $2 billion, rather than the $2.1 billion they forecast in late May. Projected earnings got a bigger downgrade and will now be roughly $1.65 per share, compared to the prior $1.85 outlook.

    Executives are confident that the issues that tripped up sales growth come from a mix of “difficult but temporary local market” issues and a slower than expected introduction of the EMV system. Investors who agree with that assessment might be tempted to take a closer look at this stock, which is down almost 50% in the last twelve months.

    Lululemon’s profitability growth

    Lululemon’s stock took a step back from all-time highs, dropping 11% after announcing its quarterly earnings results. The retailer had plenty of good news for investors in this report. Comparable store sales growth was 3% — on par with the prior quarter’s result and right within management’s guidance. While it could have been higher, that’s an impressive pace given the weak selling environment for most apparel retailers these days .

    The company didn’t have to resort to price cuts to keep customer traffic humming along, either. Gross profit margin improved by two percentage points to reach 49% of sales. “The second quarter demonstrated strong results as we delivered sales and EPS at the high-end of our guidance and saw an important inflection in our gross margin,” CEO Laurent Potdevin said in a press release.

    Lululemon raised its sales and profit outlook for the rest of the year, but perhaps not by as much as investors had hoped, given the run-up in the stock lately. Shareholders may have been holding out for stronger growth, but with profitably finally climbing after four years of declines, and with inventories down from the prior year, the company is in good shape headed into the key holiday shopping season.

    Definition:A professional who assists in the buying and selling of businesses .

    The principal value of a business broker is to act as a buffer between the buyer and the seller. A broker can say certain things to a buyer and certain things to a seller and wind up with a productive discussion. The broker can tell the owner the price is too high, relay what has to be done to make a deal–very openly and candidly–and discuss how the differences in viewpoint can be ironed out effectively.

    If you’re in the market to buy an existing business, a broker can help you find businesses for sale that fit your parameters, including location, industry and size. The broker will typically charge you a commission of 5 to 10 percent of the purchase price, but the assistance brokers can offer, especially for first-time buyers, is often worth the cost. However, if you’re trying to save money, you might want to consider hiring a broker only when you’re near the final negotiating phase. Brokers can offer assistance in several ways:

    • Prescreening businesses for you. Good brokers turn down many of the businesses they’re asked to sell, either because the seller won’t provide full financial disclosure or because the business is overpriced. Going through a broker helps you avoid these bad risks.
    • Helping you pinpoint your interests. A good broker starts by finding out about your skills and interests, then helps you select the right business for you. With the help of a broker, you may discover that an industry you had never considered is the ideal one for you.
    • Negotiating. During the negotiating process is when brokers really earn their keep. They help both parties stay focused on the ultimate goal and smooth over problems.
    • Assisting with paperwork. Brokers know the latest laws and regulations affecting everything from licenses and permits to financing and escrow. They also know the most efficient ways to cut through red tape, which can slash months off the purchase process. Working with a broker reduces the risk that you’ll neglect some crucial form, fee or step in the process.

    When it comes to selling your business, finding the right buyer can be time-consuming and daunting if you try to do it yourself. A seasoned business broker can read the market, knows who’s buying what and who’s got resources, and can weed out the so-called “tire kickers” from serious buyers with sufficient financial resources who are well-suited to run a business like yours. They will also ensure that news of the sale remains confidential, that loyal customers, staff, vendors and suppliers find out only when you’re ready to let them know.

    Then there are administrative issues. An experienced business broker knows what paperwork to file, and when. They also coordinate efforts between lawyers, CPAs, bankers, insurance agents and others.

    While it costs money to contract with a broker to sell your business, think of the commission you’d pay him or her as a kind of insurance. Your broker will protect your investment in the business by placing the proper value on your business, finding the right buyer, getting you the best price possible, protecting the confidentiality of the sale, handling all negotiations, ensuring that all transactions are legal, and seeing that the transition to new ownership is as wrinkle-free as possible.

    Brokers’ fees generally range anywhere from 5 to 10 percent of the selling price of the business, depending on negotiations with the broker, state laws and other factors. This is usually money well spend, because the broker can usually get more money for the business, make negotiations run smoothly, handle a lot of clerical and other details, and make a sale possible, whereas an individual business seller might not be able to accomplish all these things.

    One of the key functions of a business broker is to act as a cushion between the buyer and the

    seller and negotiate the details of the deal at a time when emotions can, and do, run high. A small business is often one of the biggest assets a business owner has, one which he or she has spent considerable time and money building. An experienced broker knows how to price a business and can toot the business’s horn in a way you might not be able to. The buyer can ask the broker pointed questions that might be difficult to ask you directly and get the answers he or she needs. The broker can also help answer any questions or resolve any problems that develop during the course of the sale.

    When it comes to choosing a business broker, make sure there’s good chemistry between you and your broker and that the two of you communicate well. You’re paying your broker to look out for your interests, negotiate successfully on your behalf, and complete the transaction in a timely and professional manner.

    To find a business broker to help you sell your business, take these steps:

    • Check newspaper ads under “Business Opportunities.” Look in your local and regional papers, as well as in The Wall Street Journal. You’ll frequently see businesses for sale under this heading, and just as prospective buyers are invited to inquire about these businesses, prospective sellers should also check out who’s facilitating these sales.
    • Look in the Yellow Pages under “Real Estate” or “Business Brokers.” Be sure to find a broker who specializes in selling businesses, not simply real estate. Don’t let the broker list your business on a realtor’s multiple listing service. Any broker who wants to do this isn’t willing to devote the time and work necessary to sell your business.
    • Ask for referrals. Ask other business owners who’ve sold businesses who they worked with. Your local chamber of commerce can also provide referrals to business brokers, as can your banker, CPA, attorney, and financial planner.

    Once you find a broker to work with, sign a contract that specifies what kind of advertising your broker will do and that the name of the business will not appear in any ads or other promotion.

    How is the index score calculated?

    The overall rankings are determined by the agencies Best Places to Work index scores, which measure employee satisfaction and commitment.

    The index score is not a combined average of an agency s category scores. It is calculated using a proprietary weighted formula that looks at responses to three different questions in the U.S. Office of Personnel Management s Federal Employee Viewpoint Survey. The more the question predicts intent to remain, the higher the weighting.

    Why are agencies grouped by size?

    We group agencies by workforce size to provide comparisons of agencies that may face similar management challenges in terms of numbers of employees and locations. The groupings have undergone several changes over the years. In 2003 the rankings featured only one list of agencies, including agencies as large as the Department of Defense (over 600,000 employees) and as small as the Office of Management and Budget (450 employees).

    Why aren t past rankings shown?

    We have different numbers of agencies participating in the rankings. For example, in 2007, 222 subcomponents participated in the rankings and the median rank was 111. In 2015, 315 subcomponents participated in the rankings and the median rank was 157. We also have made changes to the ranking s categories. For these reasons, the rank is not the most accurate reflection of an agency s performance over time. We recommend focusing on score and quartile trends instead.

    Why would an agency not have scores in some categories?

    The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, Government Accountability Office, Intelligence Community, Millennium Challenge Corporation, Office of the Inspector General at the Tennessee Valley Authority, Peace Corps, Smithsonian Institution, and U.S. Army Audit Agency do not participate in the OPM survey but conduct comparable surveys that include our three index questions. These agencies may or may not include the questions required for the category scores.

    Why would an agency not have scores for some demographics?

    To calculate a Best Places to Work index score for a demographic group at an agency, we require at least 30 respondents in the category. If there were fewer than 30, we did not report a score.

    Also, full props to their customer service staff in sending me missing issues (still not sure if it s my mailman or my coworkers) – likely suspects!). Unlike the other paper, I don t need to run to a newsstand and pay for another copy. Check this periodical out!

    As a big fan of information, Knowledge is Power, I was very impressed with the Read to Succeed Seminar I attended at this publication s office. I know the title smacks of a literacy program, but it was actually an informative meeting on how to read the weekly publication to expand on networking and marketing.

    In these uncertain economic times, newspapers and jobs are falling by the wayside. Judd Walsh opened my eyes on ways to utilize many of the great sections to find sales leads, build market intelligence, and prospecting. He gave great tips and suggestions.

    Some of the most valuable info in the SFBT is in the form of The Lists published weekly and then at the end of the year in a large compendium. These Listings cover topics such as Best Places to Work in the Bay Area to The Top Wineries. Event announcements and articles on the different industries are excellent resources.

    I am now going to subscribe to the newspaper. Thanks to Veronica and also the gentleman that gave me a copy of 2009 Zagat Guide.

Patrons will also have the option of enjoying coffee, desserts, and live entertainment in The Watertower’s coffeehouse or, a relaxed game of bocci in the gardens located adjacent to the patio space.

    The cafe’s aim is simple. It will provide a completely sophisticated, sensual, yet casual dining and/or coffeehouse experience for the many Atlantans and visitors who frequent the city’s casual dining spots and entertainment venues. It will be an affordable venture for patrons, one that will encourage them to return on many occasions. The menu will feature hearty fare of the type that is frequently out of the reach of the typical young professional. out of reach because time frequently prevents her/him from cooking hearty meals like those featured on our menu.

    Finally, and quite significantly, The Watertower will provide a much needed neighborhood-based retail food operation that is currently unavailable to the southern end of Atlanta’s Old Fourth Ward neighborhood. Not only is it projected that the business will generate 21 new jobs, the partnership responsible for creating The Watertower will generate additional revenue specifically dedicated to assisting the Historic District Development Corporation in its efforts to bring affordable housing, new jobs, and commercial activity to the Old Fourth Ward.
