Valuing a Business based on Market Comps

The market approach offers you perhaps the most compelling way to determine the business value. Many business people and appraisal experts believe the market to be the ultimate judge of what a business is worth.

In this sense, the business market value is revealed by the price the business fetches in an actual sale. Comparison against the sales of similar businesses is the next best thing – you can gather enough statistical evidence to price your business quite accurately.

Key uses of market-based business valuation

Determining your business value by such market comparisons is especially useful in these situations:

  1. To set an asking price or offer price for a business acquisition.
  2. To defend your business valuation in a legal controversy or before the tax authorities.
  3. To justify your business value in a dispute such as partner disagreements or buyout.

Business fair market value estimation

Market comparisons are an excellent way to estimate the very important fair market value of a business. This is by far the most common measure of business value – and is the de-facto standard used in most business valuations.

Valuation Multiples: business value calculation

You can use a number of valuation multiples to estimate your business fair market value. All such multiples are statistically derived ratios that relate the potential business selling price to some measure of its financial performance.

Using the valuation multiples derived from comparable business sales, you can determine what your business is worth based on its recent revenues, net income, discretionary cash flow, EBITDA. total assets or book value, among others.

For example, you can take the Price to Gross Revenues Multiple and multiply it by your business revenue figure. The result is the market-based estimate of what your business is worth.

Example

ValuAdder offers you a set of intelligent tools to quickly assess your business market value. First, you select your business type from among 425 industries. Next, you enter the key financial parameters for your business. Finally, you calculate the fair market value range, average and median values for your business.

You can also explore how the businesses in your entire industry group are priced by the market. This is very useful to estimate the value of businesses that generate income from a number of profit centers, such as product sales and client services.

Business Desktop PC Buying Tips

Introduction

Laptops may be getting more popular for some businesses, but a business PC is still ideal for many small to medium sized organizations that do not have staff traveling with their workstation computers. On top of being typically faster and cheaper than laptops, an office desktop computer is easier to upgrade and usually can be repaired without being sent back to the manufacturer.

With so many choices, it can be hard to find the best business desktops for your organization, but NeweggBusiness will break down what you should be looking for when shopping for a workstation PC below. Consider the following criteria when purchasing a workstation PC for your organization:

Form Factor

Traditionally, a workstation PC meant a large tower coupled with a monitor. Workstation PCs now have towers that range from full-size to compact, with some no more than a foot tall. There are even all-in-one PCs that eliminate the tower by combining the monitor and tower into one compact unit, which can free up some space in a crowded office.

A business PC that will be used for general office administration and word processing will not need huge amounts of processing power, and an octa-core processor is usually not required. Find a workable balance where the processor is powerful enough for the tasks you intend to use it for.

Solid state drives are very popular, but not all workstation PCs will need the increased read and access times that they provide. Consider getting solid state drives for workstations that require fast read and write speeds for specialized jobs or fast boot speeds. Otherwise, a traditional hard drive will be sufficient for most tasks.

Graphics

Most business PCs used for general administrative tasks and word processing will not require dedicated graphics cards, so you can reduce costs by purchasing PCs with onboard video.

However, an exception may be made for business-grade graphics cards if your organization is purchasing a workstation for design, simulation, rendering, or any other graphics related tasks. Also, if the tasks that the business PC will be performing require a lot of screen space, consider getting a workstation PC with a capable of outputting video to multiple displays to improve productivity and efficiency.

Many basic business desktops come with DVD writers, which should be sufficient for general use, but you can always add a Blu-ray drive if it is required for the tasks that the business PC will be doing.

Conclusion

Keep those key points in mind when shopping for a business PC and you will find one that fulfills its role and fits your organization’s budget. Avoid over-spending by buying one with specifications that are above and beyond what is needed. The ideal workstation PC should be sufficient for its function without being unnecessarily expensive and laden with necessary features.

Client Christmas cards – how to get it right

by HCA | Dec 19, 2013

The holidays are a time of comfort and joy—not a time to unleash your inner cynic. The fact remains, however, that nearly everyone on your corporate holiday mailing list knows your gift, card or e-greeting is really an end-of-the-year marketing pitch. A soft sell to be sure, but a marketing pitch nonetheless.

That doesn’t give you full reign to impersonate Ebeneezer Scrooge, however. According to etiquette expert Thomas P Farley—known colloquially as “Mister Manners”—holiday business greetings are a rewarding exercise and a great way to improve client relations, provided you get it right.

“This is an opportunity to get back on the radar with your clients in a meaningful way,” Farley said. “If it’s not meaningful, you’re better off not doing anything at all.”

With that in mind, here are five timely tips for wishing your clients a happy holiday season.

If possible, send a personalized, handwritten card. Operating on a tight budget may prevent you from sending mass-mailed holiday cards to all your clients, but if you can afford the extra effort, it’s worth it.

“An e-greeting can be annoying because they’re often difficult to open and they may not make it to the individual,” said Dianne Gottsman, a national etiquette expert and owner of the Protocol School of Texas. “Handwritten cards breed goodwill.”

Farley agrees, adding that generic e-greetings often “get deleted the moment they’re sent.”

Instead, Farley recommends putting pen to paper and using the opportunity to make a comment specific to the individual, perhaps drawing on a business lunch or meeting the two of you attended.

Choose a tasteful, appropriate design. As head of custom design at California-based Tiny Prints, Heidi Reichert has seen a lot of corporate holiday cards over the years. The best, she said, always “reflect the professionalism” of the company.

“We’ve seen really silly photos or things that might be construed as offensive—maybe it’s a photo of the employees doing shots or something like that,” Reichert said. “It might seem funny at the time, but you never know what your audience might think when they get it.”

Instead, Reichert recommends using photos that are appropriate and professional, along with designs that stand out from the ubiquitous red-and-green that don most holiday greetings. Lime greens and blues are especially popular this season.

Avoid blatant endorsements of religion or cultural traditions. One thing Farley, Gottsman and Reichert all agreed on was that it’s best to “assume nothing” when it comes to recipients’ religious or cultural traditions.

“Being very safe and respectful is the key,” said Gottsman, who added that a neutral “Happy Holidays” is preferable to endorsing Christmas, Kwanzaa, or other holidays.

However, Farley said this rule applies only to the card design itself. Inside, it’s appropriate to wish someone a “Merry Christmas” or “Happy Hanukah,” provided you definitely know your client celebrates that holiday. “It makes your greeting that much more meaningful and warm,” Farley said.

Keep out logos and business cards. Resist the urge to plaster your greeting with your company logo, or stuff the package full of coupons or business cards.
“This is the time for the soft-sell. You’re not pitching, you’re not doing client business,” Farley advised. “The card itself is all the selling you should really be doing.”

While logos do have a place on a corporate card, it should be done in a tasteful way, said Reichert. Placing the logo below your signature or on the back of the card is a nice way to make the card stand out as something personalised by the business, she said.

Send cards and gifts as soon as possible. Now is the time to send out your holiday greetings and gifts, if you haven’t already. The earlier the better, given many companies close up shop the week of Christmas.

If you’ve missed the deadline, however, Gottsman says you can never go wrong with a New Year card, which should be in the mail before Christmas Day.

The bottom line with all these dos and don’ts, however, is that despite your business, your budget or your byline, your holiday greeting should come from the heart.

“If someone is actually taking the time to write a personal message, that’s going to trump even the worst card design,” Farley said. “Even if the card itself is something you get for 50% off at the local dollar store, the fact that you’ve included a personal message is far more impressive than the most stunning card with nothing inside.”

What are SBA loans?

The U.S. Small Business Administration is a federal agency committed to furthering the growth and development of small businesses. One of the ways it does this is by guaranteeing loans to small businesses made through lending partners nationwide. U.S. Bank is both an SBA Preferred Lender and one of America s most experienced SBA lenders.

The SBA does not make loans directly to small businesses. Rather, it sets the guidelines for loans, which are made by lending partners nationwide, including banks and economic development organizations. The SBA guarantees a percentage of the loan, minimizing risk to the lending partners and increasing the possibility that small businesses will receive the funds they need.

Does my business qualify for a Small Business Administration loan?

Small businesses must meet certain criteria to qualify for an SBA loan, including size requirements, financial standing and being in a for-profit industry. SBA loans cannot be made to a small business if the borrower has access to other financing that offers reasonable terms. In addition, a small business must meet the credit qualifications of the lending partner.

Advantages include lower down payments and longer repayment terms.

Benefits of SBA loans include lower down payments and longer repayment terms than conventional bank loans, enabling small businesses to keep their cash flow for operational expenses and spend less on debt repayment.

  • Up to 90% financing
  • Loans up to $11.25 million
  • Terms up to 25 years
  • Fixed and variable rate options
  • No balloon payments
  • Most for-profit small businesses are eligible
  • SBA loans originated at U.S. Bank are serviced by U.S. Bank, ensuring personalized service

  • Commercial real estate purchases
  • Business acquisition or expansion
  • Construction
  • Equipment, inventory or working capital
  • Debt refinancing

Financing maximums and terms are determined by borrower qualifications and use of funds. U.S. Bank and its representatives do not provide tax advice. Consult an advisor regarding a particular financial situation. For any deferred or promotional payment period, interest accrues and is amortized over the remainder of the term and outstanding balance. Deposit products offered by U.S. Bank National Association. Member FDIC.

The 3.49% interest rate applies to new or used equipment and vehicle loans up to 100% LTV and terms up to 36 months for credit qualified applicants. Small Business Term Loan Calculator

At Dealstruck, we believe that transparency in lending is simply good business. That’s why we created a simple-to-use term loan calculator for small businesses. If you are in the market for business financing, make sure that you investigate the real cost of a business loan, line of credit, or alternative funding option. Cost includes much more than the advertised interest rate – in fact, you’ll want to consider the origination fee, annual percentage rate, total of payments over the life of the loan, and more. And, at Dealstruck, we clearly define these loan terms through our Tru-Cost Loan Calculator to help small business owners make an informed decision.

Enter your desired loan amount and watch as our term loan calculator delivers easy-to-read figures that will help you determine how much you can afford and how much interest you are willing to pay, as well as the differences between our small business term loan and the typical high-cost merchant cash advance (MCA) and daily debit loans that are available on the market today. A term loan is simple to work with and easy to manage on a monthly basis. It provides a predictable method of financing equipment, managing major capital expenditures, and enhancing the purchasing power of your business. Instead of daily payments that can seriously impact your cash flow, our term loans require one simple monthly payment that fits well within a business’s budget.

Before you decide to secure business capital with a lender who may end up charging you an effective interest rate of over 80%, take some time with our complimentary small business Tru-Cost loan calculator and see just how beneficial a business term loan through Dealstruck can be! You’ll secure the financing you need, without sacrificing your hard-earned revenue to loan fees and high interest rates.

“My consulting project for 3M in Peru sharpened my skills in market research and segmentation analysis. I also connected with influential South American Executives who helped me advance my career.”
Marcela Giraldo
(Full-time MBA ’15)

Alidad Arabshahi
(EMBA ’16)

Working in small teams, students partner with executives from multinational organizations to address complex business challenges. Prior to the trips, students collaborate remotely for several months. Then, they spend one week in the client’s country to present their final recommendations to the organization’s leadership. Full-time MBA students take the trip during the spring semester, and evening program students travel during the summer.

“Over the more than six months that we worked on the project, we were in regular communication with our host company in Seoul. Our hard work was validated when senior executives endorsed our findings and suggested that our recommendations would be incorporated into their Korean business plan.”
Caroline Decker
(EMBA ’16)

“Like in any country, doing business in India requires an understanding of its unique culture and society. The valuable experience gained from a week of living and working in Mumbai helped our team to deliver even more value to our client.”

You’ll secure the financing you need, without sacrificing your hard-earned revenue to loan fees and high interest rates.
