Synovial Fluid Analysis

Synovial fluid analysis is a group of tests that examine joint (synovial) fluid. The tests help diagnose and treat joint-related problems.

Alternative Names

Joint fluid analysis; Joint fluid aspiration

How the test is performed

A sample of synovial fluid is needed for this test. Synovial fluid is normally a thick, straw-colored liquid found in small amounts in joints, bursae, and tendon sheaths.

After the area is cleaned, the health care provider will insert a sterile needle through the skin and into the joint space. Once in the joint, fluid is drawn through the needle into a sterile syringe.

The fluid sample is sent to the laboratory. The laboratory technician will check the sample’s color and clarity, and then place it under a microscope to check it for red and white blood cells, crystals (in the case of gout), and bacteria. In addition, there may be a chemical analysis, and if infection is a concern, a sample will be cultured to see if any bacteria grow.

How to prepare for the test

Normally, no special preparation is necessary, but contact your health care provider before the test to make sure. Tell your doctor if you are taking blood thinners, as they can affect test results.

How the test will feel

Occasionally, the health care provider will first inject local anesthesia with a small needle, which will sting. The aspiration is done with a larger needle and may also cause some pain. The procedure usually lasts less than one minute.

Why the test is performed

The test can help diagnose the cause of pain or swelling in joints. Removing the fluid can also help relieve joint pain.

This test may be used to diagnose:

  • Gout
  • Infection
  • Other inflammatory joint conditions
  • Joint injury
  • Osteoarthritis

What abnormal results mean

Abnormal joint fluid may look cloudy or abnormally thick.

Blood in the joint fluid may be a sign of injury inside the joint or a body-wide bleeding problem. An excess amount of normal synovial fluid can also be a sign of osteoarthritis.

What the risks are

  • Infection of the joint — unusual but more common with repeated aspirations
  • Bleeding into the joint space

Special considerations

Ice or cold packs may be applied to the joint for 24 to 36 hours after the test to reduce the swelling and joint pain. Depending on the exact problem, you can probably resume your normal activities after the procedure. Talk to your health care provider to determine what activity is most appropriate for you.

Graduate Certificate in Applied Bioinformatics

Lead the Application of Genomic Information

With ongoing public attention on the Human Genome Project, understanding, analyzing, and interpreting genomic data continue to be a focus across many disciplines. By merging biology, computer science, and information technology, bioinformatics allows us to combine mathematics and computers to gain a better understanding of biological processes.

Professionals in this field will be required to use technologies to gather, store, analyze, and integrate biological and genetic information, which can then be applied to gene-based drug discovery and development.

To help you learn about the latest techniques, Penn State World Campus has partnered with Penn State’s Eberly College of Science to offer the online Graduate Certificate in Applied Bioinformatics.

Why a Certificate in Applied Bioinformatics at Penn State?

The online Graduate Certificate in Applied Bioinformatics is designed to provide you with an in-depth understanding of computational and statistical concepts that can be applied to genomic data, enabling you to make informed decisions about cellular behavior and activity.

The program’s unique theory-to-practice approach also allows you to gain practical, hands-on experience in a wide variety of of data analysis scenarios including RNA-Seq gene expression, genome variation, SNP calling as well as genome assembly studies.

Who Should Apply?

If you are a professional wishing to advance your career—or if you want to make a career change—this certificate allows you to complete your study assignments at your own pace through the convenience of online courses. You may also find this program beneficial if you are working in a field such as molecular and cellular biology, genetics, biomedical engineering, medical science, scientific programming, or software development.

Career Opportunities for Graduates

With the applied bioinformatics graduate certificate, you can use your acquired knowledge and skills as a:

  • bioinformatics scientist

More information:

The Master of Science in Counselor Education: School Counseling emphasis is designed for students wishing preparation as counselors in school settings, primarily public schools. The SOC code for this particular occupation is 21-1012.

Counseling Education Program Mission Statement

The Counselor Education Program at Eastern Washington University is committed to the selection, training, supervision, and professional success of counseling students, in keeping with the high standards established by the Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP). As a regional teaching university, EWU has a proud history of providing education to a high percentage of first generation college students, often from under-represented and lower socioeconomic communities, a tradition which the Counselor Education program maintains. Thus, counselor training occurs in a learning community that is intentionally focused on both skills development and personal growth of the counselor-in-training. In this way, Counselor Education fulfills its purpose of preparing competent and caring professional counselors to meet the needs of diverse urban and rural communities.

Classes and experiences are organized to provide thorough instruction in the skills and knowledge generally recognized by the counseling profession to be effective with a K-12 population. Candidates not only focus on the following in the graduate classroom, but also for the K-12 population he or she will serve: academic, career, and personal/social development. The program is not only accredited by CACREP, but is approved by the Washington State Professional Educator Standards Board (PESB). Graduates of the program meet the requirements to become an Educational Staff Associate (ESA), the credential held by School Counselors.

Candidates of the program will have education and experiences shaped by the ASCA (American School Counseling Association) National Model. They also have opportunity to be mentored by professionals in the community while they complete an internship. This relationship helps guide the candidate in construction of a professional portfolio, which is a product of the knowledge and skills gained through the graduate experience. Themes include leadership, advocacy, collaboration, and systemic change, which are incorporated into the components of the ASCA model. The components are foundation, management, accountability, and delivery. Instruction includes all of these aspects, along with the CACREP core competencies, providing graduates with a solid entry point for a rewarding career.

A student enrolled in this program can expect to graduate in 21 months or 6 academic quarters over 2 academic years. We have a 100% on-time completion rate once a student begins. Resident tuition for the school couneling program is $21,906.96 for two years (2016-2017) and non-resident tuition is $50,876.76 for two years. Colorado Mesothelioma Lawyers

Asbestos was once widely used by manufacturers and construction companies alike; however, we now understand the true danger of this seemingly harmless material. Up until 1970, the devastating effects of asbestos exposure were unknown or ignored. The material was used in the buildings and everyday products of the United States until studies began to show a link between asbestos exposure and the development of mesothelioma, a form of cancer that develops in the lining of the lungs.

Mesothelioma is caused by the inhalation or ingestion of asbestos fibers and takes many decades to fully develop. Unfortunately, the slow development rate makes it very difficult for early diagnosis and treatments to take place. It is not uncommon for victims to have been exposed in their teen years, only to be diagnosed with mesothelioma in their 40s and 50s.
