Неа: молодая Эммануэль (1976 )

sleazy in some parts but overall a bit tame

Mid seventies everything was possible. On 42nd they had their glory days with porn, in Europe they were doing erotic flicks. Some became notorious as Emmanuelle (1974)or as Spielen wir Liebe (Maladolescenza 1977)or Ultimo tango a Parigi (1972). The last two became famous due young actresses going nude with an age mostly just on the border of youngsters. Maladolescenza is still not released due 14 year old ones going naked all the way. Nevertheless, it was a time to shock viewers with themes about youngsters searching out how to make love.

Nea is also a perfect example. It clocked in on the success of Emmanualle because it was also called Nea: A Young Emmanuelle. But the German release said it all, Die erotischen Phantasien einer 16 J hrigen.

It s about a 16 year old girl (Ann Zacharias)trying to write an erotic novel. She succeeds and finds a publisher (Sami Frey). He agrees. But she wants to find out more about love and by seeing her mother having a lesbian affair which she s watching, she decides to find out what love is all about and starts a relation with the publisher. But the publisher is of course messing around with other girls. She s out for revenge.

No don t think to see blood or whatsoever. The reason I watched it is because the way she s taking revenge is a bit sleazy. She knows a guy who never had love and she takes him in her room to make use of his semen for the revenge, that part is sleazy but never becomes explicit. In fact, up to today s standards it s a bit low on everything. It do contains nudity and frontal male nudity but as I said, never becomes explicit. The theme about a 16 year old wanting sex with an adult was a shocker back then. But Maladolescenza and Last Tango In Paris were more shocking due the age of the youngsters. Still, it s fun to watch how she seducing the publisher and when she s playing with herself it s being edited with a cat, one to see. Sometimes funny but never shocking, still, if you want to see sleaze from France watch it or go for Une Vraie Jeunne Fille from the same year. All about the same theme, searching for the perfect sex.

It is Christmas time and the McCallister family is preparing for a vacation in Paris, France. But the youngest in the family named Kevin got into a scuffle with his older brother Buzz and was sent to his room which is on the third floor of his house. Being home alone was fun for Kevin, having a pizza all to himself, jumping on his parents’ bed, and making a mess. Then, Kevin discovers about two burglars, Harry and Marv, about to rob his house on Christmas Eve. Kevin acts quickly by wiring his own house with makeshift booby traps to stop the burglars and to bring them to justice. Written by John Wiggins

Surreal and hilarious

Home Alone is one of the most popular movies from the early 90 s. Its success was phenomenal and it also made Macaulay Culkin a superstar.

The plot is quite original and surreal: a child who is home alone and capable of making the bandits s lives miserable? Sure, it s an impossible story, but who cares? Far from being a perfect movie, it is however okay and fun to watch, entertaining and contains slapstick humor too although I don t like some of the language used.

Our story takes place in Chicago at Christmas time, which makes this a Christmas film. In fact, the movie has lots of Christmas decorations, lights, snow and many other details which create the feeling and magic so characteristic of Christmas. To accent the Christmas atmosphere even more, there are a cup of nice Christmas carols such as Rockin Around the Christmas Tree (performed by Brenda Lee), You re a mean one, Mr. Grinch , White Christmas , Carol of the Bells , Oh Holly Night and Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas and some brilliant instrumental musics.

Kevin McCallister is the hero of the story. He s not just any kid, he s a very smart one. He also knows all about the intentions of the wet bandits Harry and Marv and prepares them lots of unexpected surprises . Their lives won t be easy with Kevin defending his house. Sure, they are the villains and as such they get what they deserve, but they do suffer a lot too. We almost feel sorry for them.

The wet bandits were nicknamed like that by Marv because their calling card (according to him) was to let the water running in every houses they robbed. That said, both wet bandits are hilarious. Harry is more cranky, while Marv is the most stupid of the two (although both are stupid) and maybe that s why people tend to sympathize more with him. Marv s stupidity also makes him the funniest of the two. Marv is the typical tall and clumsy guy with no brain, a bit like Averell Dalton from the Lucky Luke comics.

The movie has lots of funny moments. The funniest for me is when Harry and Marv pretend to be Santa Claus and his elf and the way Harry speaks in that scene, followed by the even funnier part when Kevin fires at Harry s pants. Whenever Kevin fools the bandits in a try to make them believe the whole family is at home when Kevin is all alone is funny too. For some reason, I also find funny whenever Kevin screams maniacally (particularly when he says he s not afraid anymore and sees Old Marley and screams out loud.

The scenes which Kevin fools and scares the Little Nero s Pizza boy and Marv with the gangster film Angels with Filthy Souls are hilarious, but in the case of the Pizza boy it is unfair for him. There was no need to scare the hell out of him – he was just delivering pizza and wasn t after Kevin.

Old Marley is an interesting character. I always felt sorry for him because of the lies Buzz tells about him. And the man never did anything bad to anyone. Buzz is a jerk and Uncle Frank is even worse. Buzz is mean for Kevin and Uncle Frank openly dislikes Kevin. When Uncle Frank tells Kevin Look what you did, you little jerk! , Kevin s parents should tell him something like Frank, stay out of this and shut up! .

The church is magnificent. It s one of the biggest and most beautiful churches I ve ever seen in a movie.

Macaulay Culkin is terrific as the clever kid Kevin McCallister. Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern are awesome as the wet bandits and Roberts Blossom is great as the character Old Marley. It s also delightful to see John Candy as Gus Polinski, the Polka King of the Midwest .

Fine acting and hugely entertaining

This film is a great movie for its fighting scenes and its music score and its drama and wonderful script. Elvis acts amazingly well with Hope Lange. There is a sadness to the movie when the character played by Elvis starts to tell the story of how he could have saved his mother from dying. It’s emotionally sensitive and well made.

Now I know what I have always hated Jello!

My uncle recently recommended I see the British show Doc Martin . Well, his suggestions aren t usually too bad, so I decided to start at the beginning–or at least what I thought was the beginning. It turns out this character had first appeared in the Craig Ferguson film Saving Grace –though I didn t know it until after I saw Doc Martin . So guess what is next on my Netflix queue?

As for this film, I have been warned that the character is not exactly the same one from the later television series. It s played by the same actor (Martin Clunes) and he s got the same name, but I have been warned that the stories aren t exactly the same in the movies that preceded the TV show. That often happens when movies are later adapted to a TV series, though after seeing Doc Martin , I cannot imagine changing it very much because the film was nearly perfect!

The film begins in London. Dr. Martin is a successful obstetrician and s satisfied with his life. However, he s blissfully unaware that his wife is cheating on him. with several men! When he discovers, he takes off for Cornwall. After all, as a child he d visited there and found it very relaxing–and he certainly needs to relax and clear his head.

What happens next is very strange and one of the subplots involves a strange person who leaves jello* molds on people s doorsteps with nasty and incriminating photos buried within them! There is much more to it than this. but it s probably best you just see it for yourself.

So why did I like Doc Martin so much? Well, the writing was just lovely and the story really made you care about the doctor and this strange little town full of interesting characters. Additionally, the direction and acting were also nice. It s a gentle meandering sort of film–and one that seemed very charming and made me want to see more.

Swiss Chocolate of Romantic Comedies

Do you like chocolate? Do you know that moment, even before you put it in your mouth? You can imagine that taste. You can feel that rich sweetness on your tongue, the smoothness going around your mouth.

The Holiday is a romantic comedy. You know what that means. And if you don t like romantic comedies, don t go and see it. If you do, you will know what to expect. The mushy feelings creeping up on you. All those If Only. emotions telling you there is a lovely place somewhere in which people fall in love and everything works out kinda perfect. If only for a while. say, for the holiday period over Christmas and New Year. or for the 138 minutes which this film lasts.

Two Women on the Verge of Emotional Breakdown do holiday house swap. They escape lovelorn predicaments and find unexpected love on their opposite sides of the Atlantic. Cue picturesque English country house just the way Americans imagine it (with sheep out the back). Cue enormous L.A. mansion with swimming pool (just the way Brits imagine it).

Cameron Diaz is Amanda, owner of a movie-trailers editing firm. Since she s played the same comedy character several times, there are few surprises; but an excellent script, written directly for her and the other three leading stars, projects it rather better than average. Kate Winslet as Iris, a successful writer on The Telegraph, is more nuanced: an actor with considerable range, we cannot but help admire the way she does pathetic girl rather beautifully in a role that she could manage with one hand counting the ways to have fun and get paid simultaneously.

Formulaic it is (wonderful women with scoundrelly fellas eventually get The Real Men They Deserve – meeting puppy dogs, children, and falling snowflakes on the way of course). But, well-done within a narrow genre, it still stands out. No-brainers like this tend to have dumb scripts and dumber acting, but The Holiday contains warm, natural dialogue and heartfelt chemistry. If this was the 40 s, you d want Jude Law and Cameron Diaz to get married off-screen afterwards. Charismatic and entertaining, unless you find Diaz, Law or Winslet personally irritating (some people do), they are a joy to watch, filling their parts with love and light. Excellent production values keep the rather trite story flowing. Everything is picture-perfect, long lenses flattering the features of the already handsome stars, filters and soft-focuses carefully delineating the mood.

There is an overall honesty to the performances. You look like my Barbie! delights a four-year-old excitedly to Diaz. Ironic? But said with so much affection it is self-deprecating rather than cutting. Jack Black struggles to get out of his music-and-silly-faces typecasting but just manages to look the part for an intellectual Iris who is not attracted to skin-deep. Jude Law, on the other hand, could be an advert for men s skin cream, and too rounded a character to be mere pin-up material.

With more Christmas songs than you can shake a piece of tinsel at, The Holiday is a warm, snuggly romance to lose yourself in before coming firmly back down to planet earth. It might be shallow, but it s seasonal entertainment – and a Swiss chocolate of romantic comedies.

Shots Fired: Comedy Central scores a hit with this hilarious screwball farce

Network: Comedy Central; Genera: Comedy/Sketch; Content Rating: TV-14 (for strong language and sexual content; Classification: Contemporary (Star range: 1 – 4)

Season Reviewed: 5 seasons

From the outset, a full-length parody of Cops wouldn t sound like any groundbreaking comedy. With it s well known traditions and often copied style, Cops has long been the subject of parody for years before arguably becoming a parody of itself. However, Reno 911! does you one better. From Thomas Lennon, Kerri Kennedy and Ben Garant – the creators of The State and the now forgiven and forgotten Viva Variety – Reno takes that Cops mold (and Rescue 911! title sequence) and populates it with a world of realized original characters.

In Reno this comedy troupe has found a perfect cross between the improvisational sketch comedy series and the episodic televisions series. The show, as you might expect, is largely improved which can be good or bad (as seen in last year s disastrous Life with Bonnie ). The show s hit-and-miss laugh ratio is lower than it probably would be if it was scripted, but what we gain in the trade-off is this wonderful naturalistic dialog. The crew have an ear for recreating that often witty but just as often dull, monotonous and uncomfortable naturalistic conversation. If Reno were any funnier it would be in the stratosphere. I love the opening title sequences.

The entire cast is note-perfect. We have straight-laced Jonsey (Cedric Yarbrough), Garcia (Carlos Alazraqui), a racist, lonely, complex shell of a man, Clementine (Wendi McLendon-Covey) is the truck stop waitress turned cop with a full dance card , Junior (Garant) is the incompetent, fully of stories, young cadet and Rainessha Williams (Niecy Nash) is the sassy, booty-licious femme-fetal cop. The show bounces all these characters off each other, matching them up in odd pairs and letting the nuances in them create the sparks. Thomas Lennon and Kerri Kennedy have given themselves the juiciest roles and approach brilliance in them. Kenney s Trudy Weigel is superbly dysfunctional beyond any simple description and Lennon s Jim Dangle is poised to be the breakout character of the show. Like Mr. Garrison in South Park and Stewie Griffen on Family Guy , Dangle is a character than can get a laugh from me almost anytime he opens his mouth. It has a knack for creating scenarios where, in an odd way, the set-ups can be funnier than the punch line. Just the idea that Jim Dangle is going to show up to Trudy Weigel s house and give her the thrill of her life is funnier than ultimately seeing the Asian man she s hiding in her kitchen.

Reno knows its way around the Cops traditions, making ample use of streakers with strategically placed edit blurs (also brilliantly hiding the faces of the cast doubling up), belligerent roadside pull-overs, hookers with bad wigs and crazy domestic disturbance calls that reveal fetishes best kept behind closed doors. But it also knows it needs to be more than that. The episode plots are as hilariously strange as it comes and veiled thinly enough to support any number of tangential gags. In one episode the group is put on suicide watch for Trudy Weigel and she flips out because they look disappointed she didn t go through with it. In another, they venture to the Burning Man festival and get lost along the way in full rave gear. In a particularly inspired episode they compete for 2 tickets to an execution with a suspect scavenger hunt. The bumbling officers get visits from the FBI, Homeland Security, British officers and in 2 classic episodes a religious tele-evangelist and Reading Ron (Brian Unger) featuring a show-stoppping bit with a cat on a roof. Watch continuously and you ll see running gags and continuity coming out in what otherwise seems like randomized chaos. These cops view enforcing the law as a happy side effect to the real joy of holding their power over the citizens of the burned-out Nevada suburb, abusing it gleefully and not above pulling guns on themselves.

Reno 911! was originally produced as a pilot for Fox and sat on the shelf for 2 years before Comedy Central came calling (and it became an almost instant hit). Sounds like something Fox would do. It s all for the best as Reno on Comedy Central is given free range to do things every week that would have gotten them throw off the air at Fox. Jokes around rape, accidental shootings, cops planting evidence and screwing with the citizens (in a time when the media loves to put a wedge between cops and the people), red-necks every racial demographic known to man, discussions on when it s appropriate to use the N-word, terrorists in the post-9/11 world (with the greatest of ease I might add, a subject most shows trip over themselves to run from) and everything else you might imagine would give a network suit a conniption fit are peppered well into the show. It enthusiastically leapfrogs from one set piece to the next in an attempt to offend anyone and everyone it can and getting big laughs with it.

I largely consider Comedy Central a dumping ground, but admire their drive to take chances – which is more than you can say for the networks. Reno is a show that isn t crude for the sake of it or the edgy in appearance only. It is a gutsy, frequently hysterical series in which the gags are expertly delivered (and edited together) by a well developed cast of comic talents. A real screwball farce that roams freely around without politically correct borders or boundaries, the likes of which you just don t see much of on TV today. And you want, silly slapstick? Reno proves that even the age-old kick-in-the-groin gag, if done well, can still be funny. An acquired taste, but well worth it.
