Are humans becoming obsolete in the workforce? All signs point to “yes.”

As IBM’s Watson proved on Jeopardy, robots are becoming smarter than people. They also make fewer mistakes and they don’t get bored.

By 2013 there will be 1.2 million industrial robots working worldwide — that’s one robot for every 5,000 people, according to Marshall Brain, founder of How Stuff Works and author of Robotic Nation.

Robots are currently analyzing documents, filling prescriptions, and handling other tasks that were once exclusively done by humans.

The next time you drop off a prescription order, you might see a robot behind the counter.

The UCSF Medical Center recently launched an automated, robotics-controlled pharmacy at two UCSF hospitals.

Once computers at the new pharmacy electronically receive medication orders from UCSF physicians and pharmacists, the robotics pick, package, and dispense individual doses of pills.

Machines assemble doses onto a thin plastic ring that contains all the medications for a patient for a 12-hour period, which is bar-coded.

The pharmacy system, which was phased in over the past year, so far has prepared 350,000 doses of medication without error.

This fall, nurses at UCSF Medical Center will begin to use barcode readers to scan the medication at patients’ bedsides, verifying it is the correct dosage for the patient. The automated system also compounds sterile preparations of chemotherapy and non-chemotherapy doses and fills IV syringes or bags with the medications.

Instead of paying an army of lawyers and paralegals to review documents, software can do the job in a fraction of the time for a fraction of the cost.

The New York Times reported that Blackstone Discovery of Palo Alto, CA provided software that helped analyze 1.5 million documents for less than $100,000.

“From a legal staffing viewpoint, it means that a lot of people who used to be allocated to conduct document review are no longer able to be billed out,” Bill Herr, a lawyer, tells the New York Times. “People get bored, people get headaches. Computers don’t.”

Google announced last fall that it was working on automated cars as a way to increase safety and help humans reduce the time spent commuting to work.

With human supervisors in the passenger seat, seven test cars have driven 1,000 miles without human intervention and more than 140,000 miles with only occasional human control.

“Our automated cars, manned by trained operators, just drove from our Mountain View campus to our Santa Monica office and on to Hollywood Boulevard,” said Google engineer Sebastian Thrun. “They’ve driven down Lombard Street, crossed the Golden Gate bridge, navigated the Pacific Coast Highway, and even made it all the way around Lake Tahoe.”

Through a partnership with General Motors, NASA’s Robonaut2 is the latest example of android technology. Equipped with a wide array of sensors and dexterous five fingered hands, it will initially handle menial jobs such as cleaning the spacestation and assisting humans in space operations.

However, it could one day venture outside the station to help spacewalkers make repairs or perform scientific work, according to NASA.

Companies are increasingly looking for ways to sell more products with fewer employees. ATM machines reduce the need for bank tellers, virtual assistants can answer the phone 24 hours a day, and self-service machines are reducing the need for checkout clerks.

Retail employment has barely budged over the last year despite stronger sales at major chains. Meanwhile, $740 billion was transacted through self-service machines in 2010, up 9 percent from 2009, reported the Los Angeles Times. That number is projected to rise to $1.1 trillion by 2014.

Although soldiers have yet to be replaced by an army of robots, we seem to be moving in that direction as drones and other machines are increasingly being used in reconnaissance and combat missions.

One example is the the MAARS (Modular Advanced Armed Robotic System), made by Foster-Miller, which has provided armed robots in Iraq. According to Wired, the robot is equipped with a GPS monitor; it can be programmed to differentiate between fire and no-fire zones, to open doors, and even to drag out injured bodies.

If there’s anything we’ve learned from Hollywood, it’s that robots are not only deadly weapons, they are also great for entertainment.

Aeon Co., a major Japanese retailer, introduced a four-foot-tall yellow and white robot at a store in 2008 whose job is to babysit children while the adults shop.

Other models include the Hello Kitty robot, which is perfect for “whoever does not have a lot time to stay with child,” according to a vendor and NEC’s PaPeRo robot, which tells jokes, gives quizzes, and can track kids using a radio-frequency identification chip.

Robots can reach areas that are inaccessible to humans and provide crucial help in rescuing victims from natural disasters. Scientists such as Satoshi Tadokoro of Tohoku University, based in Sendai, have offered the use of their robots to assist in the rescue efforts that are underway in Japan.

Tadokoro has offered the use of a snakelike robot that can enter tight spaces and use a camera to survey them, which could be helpful in collapsed buildings.

For now, the most useful robots could be aerial drones that can provide aerial inspections or ROV’s, which can help locate underwater objects and determine the condition of bridges and pipelines, according to the Center for Robot-Assisted Search and Rescue at Texas A ?>

    Rome Business Game

    The Rome Business Game is the simulation dedicated to the world of business, international markets, marketing, and business management.

    300 participants from around the world will compete against each for an opportunity within the world of international business.

    Participants will have the opportunity to meet business and marketing experts, acting as judges, as they propose innovative solutions/products to challenges presented by those same experts. They will also be developing and refining a set of soft skills which are often overlooked yet essential for career success: learning the techniques for proper business management, analysis and insight of business dynamics, team working, and practical problem solving.

    The Business Game was born in the fifties with the dual purpose of, on the one hand, providing students interested in working within companies a practice-oriented alternative to a traditional, solely theoretical education and, on the other hand, to test the capacity of students and interns in an environment which is as realistic as possible.

    Therefore, it is both a game in which teams compete in order to achieve a common, economic objective, and, simultaneously, a model that simulates the realities of business and the market which it addresses.

    The Rome Business Game allows participants to interact in a truly multicultural environment, working in English and developing managerial and technical skills which are extremely important in todays competitive international job market. Managers of our partner companies will present practical business cases to the participants who, divided into teams, have to propose a project (launch of a new product, innovative marketing campaign, practical solution(s) to a company-wide problems, etc.). The winning team has the possibility of an interview with a human resources manager of one of our partner companies or even an internship.

    Participants are divided into two categories:

    The Junior category is open to undergrad/Bachelor students and those in the first year of their Master s while the Expert category is for those about to graduate or that have already graduated.

    The RomeBG is strongly recommended for students of: economics, business administration, management engineering, computer engineering, marketing, polytechnic universities.

    The selected participants are divided into teams who will compete against each other to present the best idea. Each day of the 4-day long Festival will be dedicated to one of our partner companies and to their specific challenge. The teams will work on the case study and, at the end of the day, present their project to our panel of judges (representatives of the company) who will then declare the winner.

    It is a unique opportunity for the participants as they work in close contact with experts and representatives from major international companies, to get noticed, and to win an interview with the head of Human Resources from one of our partner companies.

    Florence Nightingale, the pioneer of modern nursing, lived more than a century ago, but her legacy lives on in hospitals, clinics and schools.     So, who are the people making these contributions? A registered nurse is the professional you’ll likely have the most contact with during a hospital stay. They’re responsible for monitoring a patient’s condition, performing medical procedures and administering medicine. They are also responsible for charting a patient’s progress. These professionals work with a range of patients, from those who are healthy (and are proactively trying to stay that way), to those who are pregnant and bringing new life, to those who are nearing the end of life and hoping for a peaceful death. “Nurses have a very holistic view of health and well-being, and I really appreciated that perspective,” Erin Whitehouse, an RN and Ph.D. student at Johns Hopkins School of Nursing, writes in an email. “[They] look at an entire person and their situation, not just what medical concern they have.”

    Many nurses also specialize and work with patients who have a certain health condition like cancer or diabetes. They can also specialize by body part. For instance, there are dermatology nurses and cardiovascular nurses, among others. RNs can also specialize by people group (like newborn babies) or by environment (like a school or hospital emergency room).

    Registered nurses will be in high demand in the next decade. The Bureau of Labor Statistics expects the profession to grow 16 percent by 2024, opening up 439,300 new jobs.

    A hedge fund manager runs all or part of a hedge fund, with the goal of maximizing return. The hedge fund manager makes calls on a wide range of financial assets – from corporate bonds to stocks to currencies. This is one of the most “white knuckle” jobs in all of capitalism. The compensation for working in a hedge fund can be unusually high. It is not uncommon to see a person in their late 20s or early 30s pull down $5 million a year or more in one of the right positions at the big funds. But, of course, there are many others who make much less and and many more who fail altogether. All who participate in this industry take on high risk. It comes down to skill, timing and a little luck. In our recent salary review of starting compensation for recent graduates of the largest MBA programs, the highest average starting pay was in hedge funds (check out the salary ranges ).

    What is a hedge fund anyway? At its core, a hedge fund manages a pool of money for large investors. The fund compensates itself for that service by taking a hefty management fee (typically 2% of assets under management per year) and a carry (a percentage of returns over a benchmark) that is paid for performance.

    The typical carry is 20%. You can see the attraction of running a hedge fund. A hedge fund with $2 billion under management and a 2/20 compensation scheme would generate $40 million in management fees plus whatever is made on the carry.

    Unlike traditional money managers of mutual funds and closed ended funds, hedge fund managers routinely engage in short selling – that is betting that a security will decline in value. There are many flavors of hedge funds but the most common variety is a long/short equity fund. This would be a fund that will try to be market neutral and instead make an excess return (“alpha” as it is called) by being right on security selection – shorting stocks headed down and going long those headed up. Hedge funds can also use leverage to enhance return. This means borrowing against assets in the fund in order to buy more securities. This, of course, can enhance return on the upside and it is not uncommon to see hedge funds close down because they suffered negative returns that would cause no one to want to invest in the fund again.

    As we write this career description in late 2009, we are in a period of unusual turbulence in the hedge fund world. Due to the financial crisis many hedge funds have shut down and undoubtedly more closures are to come. But, like the landscape after a forest fire it turns out that many trees are still left standing and stronger. And, lots of new plants, bushes and trees are on the way. Hedge funds are here to stay and will, in fact, probably rise to new heights before long. The reason is that opportunities for alpha are out there and there is no better time than the present to exploit those opportunities.

    A hedge fund career is considered one of the most desirable paths in the finance field – although some working in these funds might wonder why. While the senior fund managers pull down a huge share of the compensation, a newly minted MBA does not start at a hedge fund managing his or her own pool of money. Depending on the size and structure of the hedge fund, there may be many (or few) other positions they might take, some of which can also eventually involve steep compensation. These include working at a hedge fund as a junior trader; strategist; analyst; quant; software developer; risk manager; and in various administrative roles. As in most financial institutions, the closer you are to the money, the more of it you get to take home. In other words, the jobs in which you can easily and directly measure the profit due to your performance – and for which that number is large – tend to be the most highly compensated.

    Interestingly, a review of the placement reports of a few schools like Chicago, Columbia, Harvard Business School and Stanford will show that there was a fair bit of MBA hiring into hedge funds in 2007 and 2008. This hiring will undoubtedly decline for the classes of 2009/2010 but there is still plenty of opportunity to be had.

    The typical hedge fund will have an internal recruiter or two or, if small, will use an external recruiter. Only the very biggest places will show up with any regularity for university recruiting – this might be seen with a Citadel or Maverick. This is a classic area in which to pursue a self directed job search. You need to get out and hit the pavement and meet people in the industry and look for openings. The openings aren’t necessarily scheduled on an annual cycle but tend to occur in real time when a fund is taking in more capital or experiencing strong returns. You’ll maximize your chances of finding a good position by pursuing funds that are doing well. To make the search process more interesting, there are thousands of hedge funds. This is a gigantic and somewhat disorganized industry. The result is an inefficient job market that you can exploit by putting in the time to make connections with potential hiring managers.

    The typical hedge fund manager comes out of the sell side – that is, an investment bank. Many persons who learn to trade or analyze securities in a research position on the sell side gravitate towards hedge fund positions in mid-career. And because hedge funds typically have no training programs they like to hire persons who have already learned the ropes of investments in an investment bank or another investment management firm. Key skills in demand are (1) high intelligence, (2) strong domain knowledge, (3) consistency and attention to detail, (4) deep investing and finance knowledge, (5) strong quantitative and legal skills and (6) the ability to dive deep on an investment story.

    There is high demand for individuals with specialized skills and advanced degrees – Ph.D’s that know currencies and macroeconomics; M.D.’s that know drugs and devices and can figure out which ones will succeed and which will fail; J.D.s that can tear apart credit agreements or bet on the outcome of merger deals in the antitrust agencies; mathematicians that can build quantitative trading algorithms etc. This is a field that attracts the best and the brightest. The career outcomes are highly variable but the ride can be exhilarating.

    Management consulting firms have a wide range of billing rates depending on the level of staff, e.g. consultant vs. manager vs. partner. They charge an hourly rate and number of hours can be anywhere between 8 to 40 hours per week. The expenses are usually separate and can be as high as 20% of professional fees. The clients have gotten smarter about fees over time and many of them request the expenses to be reconciled to actual expenses at the end of the project.

    Below is a graph that should give you a rough idea of the hourly billings rate for management consultants by level. There is a spread for each level, the top firms typically charge at the high end of the range. These are rates for strategy consulting staff, there are specialized experts (e.g. IT) that could have a separate rate structure and are usually cheaper than the strategy rates.

    As you can see, the rates are range from $250 all the way to $1,200 per hour, so it very much depends on level of staff, the level of discounting in the deal, etc. to get an average blended hourly rate.

    The firms do discounts of up to 20-30% but it is usually reserved for high-volume clients, for new logos. If the business is soft in general, they are more willing to negotiate.

    Keep in mind that these are the rates that the management consultancy gets from clients, not how much they pay their own staff.

    Hi Bader, thank you for the comment. Yes, the rates depend on the geography a bit. These are rough guidelines for the US market. The European rates are similar. In some other places, such as Middle East or Asia, the rate a little lower than these. But there is not a ton of fluctuation, it is at most plus or minus 10-20%. Hope this helps!

    The Rome Business Game is the simulation dedicated to the world of business, international markets, marketing, and business management.

    300 participants from around the world will compete against each for an opportunity within the world of international business.

    Therefore, it is both a game in which teams compete in order to achieve a common, economic objective, and, simultaneously, a model that simulates the realities of business and the market which it addresses.

    The Rome Business Game allows participants to interact in a truly multicultural environment, working in English and developing managerial and technical skills which are extremely important in todays competitive international job market. Managers of our partner companies will present practical business cases to the participants who, divided into teams, have to propose a project (launch of a new product, innovative marketing campaign, practical solution(s) to a company-wide problems, etc.).     The selected participants are divided into teams who will compete against each other to present the best idea. Each day of the 4-day long Festival will be dedicated to one of our partner companies and to their specific challenge. The teams will work on the case study and, at the end of the day, present their project to our panel of judges (representatives of the company) who will then declare the winner.

    It is a unique opportunity for the participants as they work in close contact with experts and representatives from major international companies, to get noticed, and to win an interview with the head of Human Resources from one of our partner companies.

    Insurance agents are the men and women represented by some of TV’s most unforgettable ad campaigns. Who can forget GEICO’s gecko with that adorable British accent, Allstate’s memorable “Mayhem” character or the catchy jingle “Nationwide is on your side”? Insurance agents sell auto, health, home and life insurance. Commercial insurance agents also sell property damage and liability policies, employee and executive coverage and product liability. Insurance is a heavily regulated field, and agents must be licensed by their state.

    Roughly a quarter of agents work for an insurance company and often sell its products exclusively. About half work for an independent insurance agency or brokerage and sell the products of many insurance companies. Nearly 20 percent are self-employed. Commissions are an important source of income for most agents, although a smaller number hold salaried positions. Agents spend considerable time developing and pursuing sales leads. Consumer policy agents do a lot of telephone and office work, while commercial agents are more likely to be out in the field with customers. Independent agents who work for a brokerage may have irregular hours, but they also have more control over their work schedules than agents who work for an insurance company or spend most of their time in an office. There tends to be a lot of turnover in this career, because many new agents struggle to earn sufficient commission income and switch to other occupations.

    Prospects for insurance agents are closely tied to the growth of the broader economy, so the slow but steady recovery from the recession is providing improved job opportunities and stability for professionals in this industry. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects insurance agent employment growth of 9 percent between 2014 and 2024. That’s an additional 43,500 jobs that should open up before the end of that time period.

    “Beauty is only skin-deep.” It’s a familiar phrase that means what’s on the outside doesn’t always reflect what’s on the inside. But if we’re strictly talking about what’s on the outside – well, skin does have a lot to do with outer beauty. And a skin care specialist has a lot to do with helping clients attain that outer beauty.

    These specialists, or estheticians as they’re sometimes called, cleanse and exfoliate, wax and laser, moisturize and apply makeup to enhance a person’s overall appearance. A skin care specialist will first assess the condition of his or her clients’ skin and make recommendations on what can be done to improve their skin quality. For instance, chemical peels can reduce the appearance of fine lines or wrinkles; waxing and lasers remove unwanted hair; and exfoliating scrubs can slough off dead skin. An esthetician will also cleanse the skin, and in so doing, educate the client on which face washes, lotions and creams are best suited to him or her. Applying makeup is another piece of the job description, as is advising the client on a personalized skin care regimen. An esthetician might also perform facials, massages and other full-body treatments. A less glamorous part of the job includes disinfecting equipment and cleaning work areas.

    Since skin care specialists stand face-to-face with their clients, they should enjoy interacting with people. Many times, skin care specialists find great fulfillment in helping people look their best, especially since the pay isn’t particularly high compared to other health care occupations. Respect and sensitivity are key traits, too. If clients show serious skin problems, skin care specialists may have to refer them to dermatologists.

    The future looks bright for skin care specialists. The BLS projects employment growth of 12 percent from 2014 to 2024, which is faster than the average for all occupations. This growth is driven primarily by women clients – although men are increasingly seeking skin care specialists to battle the appearance of aging.

    The King s College Medical Assisting programs are accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (www.caahep.org) upon the recommendation of the Medical Assisting Education Review Board (MAERB).     Credit Transfer From Another School

    Transcripts of work completed at other colleges may be submitted to the Chief Academic Officer for review. Transcripts should be submitted during the first term of a student s program. Other documentation may also be required. Credits considered for transfer are evaluated by the Chief Academic Officer to determine if the course work is similar in nature, content, and level to that required at King s College. If the course work is comparable, transfer students may be given credit for courses completed at other accredited colleges provided the grades received for the courses were C or better. Courses completed at other Bradford schools will be treated the same as courses taken at King s College.

    Because programs at King s College are specially tailored to career preparation, course credits from other postsecondary schools may not be transferable.

    Credit is not granted for advanced placement or experiential learning. One exception is credit for military training that has been evaluated and recommended for credit by the American Council on Education (ACE). King s College may award credit based on these recommendations when the credit is for courses similar in nature, content, and level to that required at the college. Students seeking credit for military training should provide a transcript from the American Council on Education for evaluation. Credit will be treated as transfer credit and will count toward graduation.

    Credit Transfer to Another School

    The acceptance of credits is always at the discretion of the institution to which a student is attempting to transfer credits. Because programs at King s College are designed specifically for career preparation, students must assume that credits for courses taken at King s College are not transferable to other institutions. Neither King s College nor any of its employees can represent that another institution will accept any courses for credit.

    A student who is interested in attempting to transfer credits to another institution should contact the Chief Academic Officer at King s College. King s College will supply the necessary documentation that may aid the student in receiving credits for the completed course work provided the student does not owe the school money, is not delinquent or in default on a student loan, or does not owe a refund on any federal or state student financial aid program.

    “Beauty is only skin-deep.” It’s a familiar phrase that means what’s on the outside doesn’t always reflect what’s on the inside. But if we’re strictly talking about what’s on the outside – well, skin does have a lot to do with outer beauty. And a skin care specialist has a lot to do with helping clients attain that outer beauty.

    These specialists, or estheticians as they’re sometimes called, cleanse and exfoliate, wax and laser, moisturize and apply makeup to enhance a person’s overall appearance. A skin care specialist will first assess the condition of his or her clients’ skin and make recommendations on what can be done to improve their skin quality. For instance, chemical peels can reduce the appearance of fine lines or wrinkles; waxing and lasers remove unwanted hair; and exfoliating scrubs can slough off dead skin. An esthetician will also cleanse the skin, and in so doing, educate the client on which face washes, lotions and creams are best suited to him or her. Applying makeup is another piece of the job description, as is advising the client on a personalized skin care regimen. An esthetician might also perform facials, massages and other full-body treatments. A less glamorous part of the job includes disinfecting equipment and cleaning work areas.

    Since skin care specialists stand face-to-face with their clients, they should enjoy interacting with people.     Rome Business Game

    The Rome Business Game is the simulation dedicated to the world of business, international markets, marketing, and business management.

    300 participants from around the world will compete against each for an opportunity within the world of international business.

    Participants will have the opportunity to meet business and marketing experts, acting as judges, as they propose innovative solutions/products to challenges presented by those same experts. They will also be developing and refining a set of soft skills which are often overlooked yet essential for career success: learning the techniques for proper business management, analysis and insight of business dynamics, team working, and practical problem solving.

    The Business Game was born in the fifties with the dual purpose of, on the one hand, providing students interested in working within companies a practice-oriented alternative to a traditional, solely theoretical education and, on the other hand, to test the capacity of students and interns in an environment which is as realistic as possible.

Managers of our partner companies will present practical business cases to the participants who, divided into teams, have to propose a project (launch of a new product, innovative marketing campaign, practical solution(s) to a company-wide problems, etc.). The winning team has the possibility of an interview with a human resources manager of one of our partner companies or even an internship.

    Participants are divided into two categories:

    The Junior category is open to undergrad/Bachelor students and those in the first year of their Master s while the Expert category is for those about to graduate or that have already graduated.

    The RomeBG is strongly recommended for students of: economics, business administration, management engineering, computer engineering, marketing, polytechnic universities.

    The selected participants are divided into teams who will compete against each other to present the best idea. Each day of the 4-day long Festival will be dedicated to one of our partner companies and to their specific challenge. The teams will work on the case study and, at the end of the day, present their project to our panel of judges (representatives of the company) who will then declare the winner.

    It is a unique opportunity for the participants as they work in close contact with experts and representatives from major international companies, to get noticed, and to win an interview with the head of Human Resources from one of our partner companies.

    Rome Business Game

    The Rome Business Game is the simulation dedicated to the world of business, international markets, marketing, and business management.

    300 participants from around the world will compete against each for an opportunity within the world of international business.

    Participants will have the opportunity to meet business and marketing experts, acting as judges, as they propose innovative solutions/products to challenges presented by those same experts. They will also be developing and refining a set of soft skills which are often overlooked yet essential for career success: learning the techniques for proper business management, analysis and insight of business dynamics, team working, and practical problem solving.

    The Business Game was born in the fifties with the dual purpose of, on the one hand, providing students interested in working within companies a practice-oriented alternative to a traditional, solely theoretical education and, on the other hand, to test the capacity of students and interns in an environment which is as realistic as possible.

    Therefore, it is both a game in which teams compete in order to achieve a common, economic objective, and, simultaneously, a model that simulates the realities of business and the market which it addresses.

    The Rome Business Game allows participants to interact in a truly multicultural environment, working in English and developing managerial and technical skills which are extremely important in todays competitive international job market. Managers of our partner companies will present practical business cases to the participants who, divided into teams, have to propose a project (launch of a new product, innovative marketing campaign, practical solution(s) to a company-wide problems, etc.). The winning team has the possibility of an interview with a human resources manager of one of our partner companies or even an internship.

    Participants are divided into two categories:

    The Junior category is open to undergrad/Bachelor students and those in the first year of their Master s while the Expert category is for those about to graduate or that have already graduated.

    The RomeBG is strongly recommended for students of: economics, business administration, management engineering, computer engineering, marketing, polytechnic universities.

    The selected participants are divided into teams who will compete against each other to present the best idea. Each day of the 4-day long Festival will be dedicated to one of our partner companies and to their specific challenge. The teams will work on the case study and, at the end of the day, present their project to our panel of judges (representatives of the company) who will then declare the winner.

    It is a unique opportunity for the participants as they work in close contact with experts and representatives from major international companies, to get noticed, and to win an interview with the head of Human Resources from one of our partner companies.
