China, the world’s biggest car market, plans to ban the production and sale of diesel and petrol cars and vans.

The country’s vice minister of industry said it had started “relevant research” but that it had not yet decided when the ban would come into force.

“Those measures will certainly bring profound changes for our car industry’s development,” Xin Guobin told Xinhua, China’s official news agency

China made 28 million cars last year, almost a third of the global total.

Both the UK and France have already announced plans to ban new diesel and petrol vehicles by 2040, as part of efforts to reduce pollution and carbon emissions.

Chinese-owned carmaker Volvo said in July that all its new car models would have an electric motor from 2019.

Geely, Volvo’s Chinese owner, aims to sell one million electric cars by 2025.

Other global car firms including Renault-Nissan, Ford and General Motors are all working to develop electric cars in China.

Automakers are jostling for a slice of the growing Chinese market ahead of the introduction of new rules designed to fight pollution.

China wants electric battery cars and plug-in hybrids to account for at least one-fifth of its vehicle sales by 2025.

The proposals would require 8% of automakers’ sales to be battery electric or plug-in hybrids by next year, rising to 12% in 2020.

Xin predicted the change would create “turbulent times” in the industry.

The shift will also have a knock-on effect on oil demand in China. The country is currently the world’s second-largest oil consumer after the US.

Are electric cars really about to take over from the old-fashioned internal combustion engine?

Judging by some of the headlines we’ve seen recently, you could be forgiven for thinking petrol and diesel engines were about to be consigned to the scrap heap. Yet the reality is rather different.

There is no question that the car industry is undergoing a radical change.

At this year’s Frankfurt Motor Show – currently under way in the German city – the buzzword throughout the cavernous exhibition halls has been “electrification”.

The day before the show, for example, Volkswagen said it would build electrified versions of every model in its range – including those sold under the Audi, Skoda, Seat and Porsche brands – by 2030.

The same evening, Mercedes’ parent company Daimler said it would have electrified versions of its own models by 2022.

Other companies, including Volvo, Jaguar Land Rover and Honda have made similar pledges.

These are undoubtedly ambitious plans – but it is important to recognise their limitations.

They are not saying they will get rid of diesel or petrol cars completely. They are simply promising to make electrified versions of them available.

It is also important to recognise what “electrified” actually means.

It can, of course, refer to fully electric battery powered vehicles. But it can also be used to describe hybrids – and hybrids come in many forms.

A plug-in hybrid, for example, has a large battery capacity and is often capable of running entirely on electric power at least part of the time, though it will have a petrol engine as well.

One type of plug-in hybrid, often referred to as a range-extended EV, is essentially an electric car with a small petrol engine that acts as an on-board generator.

    Business cars

A strong or full hybrid, like the Toyota Prius, uses a relatively powerful electric motor alongside a conventional engine, but you don’t need to plug it in for a recharge.

A mild hybrid, meanwhile, is effectively a conventional car, equipped with a small electric motor that allows the engine to shut down temporarily when the car is stopped at traffic lights, for example. It can also be used to improve acceleration and power auxiliary systems.

To fulfil their commitments, carmakers could simply offer a range of mild hybrids. They are cheaper to produce than full hybrids, yet they can offer significant benefits in terms of performance and fuel consumption.

More and more cars are already being built in this way.

Although their pledges may sound a bit more dramatic than they really are, it is true that carmakers are investing a great deal of money in new electric models.

Volkswagen, for example, says that by 2025, one in four of its cars could be battery powered. BMW says it will be offering 12 pure-electric models by the same date.

    Business cars

So what is driving the move towards electric vehicles? There are several factors at play.

The launch of the Tesla Model S in 2012 proved that electric cars could perform as well as their petrol equivalents and have a decent battery range, albeit at a high price.

Since then the cost of lithium-ion batteries has fallen significantly, while battery management technology has improved, making that kind of performance more affordable.

Secondly, anti-pollution legislation is being tightened in key markets. Here in Europe, for example, there will be new limits in force for emissions of carbon dioxide from 2021.

Those limits are much stricter than the current ones, and they are based on the average level of pollution produced by a manufacturer’s entire fleet.

So by producing zero-emissions cars, manufacturers will find it much easier to meet the targets. The same logic applies to building more hybrids.

Both of these factors were already affecting the major manufacturers’ long term thinking, when in September 2015, another factor came into play.

The diesel emissions scandal cast an unwelcome spotlight on the industry – exposing not just sharp practice, but the fact that diesel cars in particular routinely produced far more harmful pollution than official figures would suggest.

The result was a backlash from politicians and consumers – while Volkswagen, the architect of the scandal, tried to restore its reputation by becoming a leader in electric car technology.

As the VW Group chief executive Matthias Mueller told me in Frankfurt: “We’ve got the message of course. Consumers want clean vehicles. People want clean air, and we want to make our contribution.”

    Business cars

Electrification was on the cards long before the VW scandal erupted. But the events of two years ago may well have helped to accelerate the process.

Now, it seems that carmakers are making a virtue out of a necessity, trying to gain some useful PR mileage from a process that was, in reality, more or less inevitable.

So, too, are politicians. Talk of banning petrol and diesel cars may sound dramatic, draconian even. But here in the UK, for example, the proposed ban doesn’t cover hybrids.

Industry experts say that by 2040 – the date when the ban is due to take effect – it is highly unlikely there will be any non-hybrid cars left on the market anyway.

Then there is the question of infrastructure.

    More Technology of Business

There are currently about 7,300 charging points for electric cars in the UK, and the number is increasing at a rate of about 10 per day, according to ZapMap. Globally, the figure is around two million, according to the International Energy Agency.

Clearly, if millions of petrol and diesel cars are to be replaced by electric versions, then we will need a huge investment in charging infrastructure, or they won’t be going anywhere.

They will also need batteries – a lot of batteries. And the power to charge them has to be generated somewhere.

That will take time and money.

Meanwhile, hybrid cars offer a convenient and effective stop-gap. As BMW’s chief executive Harald Krueger puts it, petrol and diesel cars “are not dead yet”.

“You will see a transition time, with investments in combustion engines – petrol engines, diesel engines, very efficient engines,” he says.

“But long term, we will see sustainable mobility with e-mobility.”

    VW Group’s Matthias Mueller agrees.

“There will be a coexistence between internal combustion engines and electric drive systems for a certain period. I can’t tell you how long that will be,” he says.

“And that’s because we do have to get the right infrastructure in place. we have to create the battery capacity.

“We’re talking about enormous capacity here, and it has yet to be created.”

Very positive experience. Everything was handled very professionally. I have been taking my vehicles there since 2011 when I moved to Naples and with a brand new car purchase will continue to use this location. I am not one to recommend places and services to others but will certainly speak positively to others about my experiences.

I came in for an oil change, Marcos was the manager, he was polite, courteous, and very helpful. This is such a refreshing change from the normal, ” I don’t really care” attitude, take good care of him, good employees are very hard to find.

    Feb 02, 2015 Miguel R.

I am giving a great compliment to Atiba for his customer service at this location. Atiba always tried to do the best for his customers. even that must of the time he is there by himself. Tuffy as a Company should reward this guy for his work ethics and great service.

I highly recommend this Tuffy! They were very flexible and accommodating. It took a couple of appointments and a lot of determination to find the issue. But they did! Thank you, Perry and Robert!

    Jul 28, 2014 Pamela E.

They were very friendly and helpful. I had an oil change and tire rotation. They found things wrong, but did not pressure me to allow them to fix them. They also told me what to watch for. For example; leaky hoses and such. I would recommend them for an oil change. Also the waiting room is nice, with free coffee, and it was very clean.

I have never been to have my car serviced at a better place. The service was fast, the help were wonderful and price very reasonable. I very highly recommend them!

    Oct 11, 2012 Karen H.

I have been using this Tuffy location since 2009, not long after it opened on Vanderbilt Beach Road. My 2003 Mustang will be turning over 100,000 miles this week and it runs like a new car. I cannot say enough to praise the knowledge and professionalism of this staff. Tuffy knows my car probably better than I do and they are helping me to take the very best care possible of my Mustang. THANK YOU.

    Mar 21, 2012 Tom J.

I needed a front end alignment for my car. The technican showed me there was a problem with the tires and recommmended replacing them. The manager, offered up several choices and recommended the best tires for the money, and it was far from the most expensive. He was very professional as is his crew. The tires arrived the next day as promised and when I showed up I got right in. I’d recommend this Tuffy Auto Center to everyone who needs quality work done at a fair price. And, if you’re a car guy or gal, the crew here will talk with you about cars as long as you want! It was an enjoyable experience.

    Oct 17, 2011 Chad L.

I discovered this Tuffy location a little over a year ago and have had friendly service and quality work every time. They have gone above and beyond for my car time and time again. I would recommend them to anyone.

    Places to Donate Used Toys

As your children get older, they’ll likely outgrow or become bored with many toys that are in perfectly good condition. Instead of throwing them away or leaving them in your closets to take up space and gather dust, consider sharing them with organizations that can help get them into the hands of youngsters who will greatly appreciate them and put them to good use.

    Where to Donate Used Toys

Many types of nonprofit organizations accept donations of toys. Some charitable groups sell donated toys, providing support for a good cause while also helping many families afford toys for their children that they would not otherwise be able to purchase. Others distribute the toys they receive directly to underprivileged youngsters. Still others make the toys available for children who utilize their services, providing entertainment during difficult times. There are many places to consider when looking to donate used toys.

    Thrift Shops

Charitable groups such as Goodwill. the Salvation Army, and others accept donations of all types of secondhand items, including toys, for resale in thrift shops. Most of these types of shops take donations during their standard hours of operation, as well as via drop boxes placed in various areas within the communities they serve.

    Shelters

If your community has a shelter for domestic violence survivors or a homeless shelter that accepts families, consider sharing toys that your child no longer wants or needs with the organization. These types of shelters operate on shoestring budgets and rely heavily on donations. Toys can be an important part of the healing process for children in this difficult situation.

    Church Day Care Centers

Many churches operate nonprofit day care and mom’s day out programs. Many of them accept donations of toys that are appropriate for the age group of youngsters who participate in their programs.

    Libraries

It’s likely you think of the library as simply a place to donate books, but many also have lending programs for toys, especially for younger children. It’s worth the time it takes to make a call to your local branch.

    Art Schools

If you’d like your toys to take on a new life, consider donating them to young artists. Many want bright and colorful items to use to enhance their projects. Who knows? Your old toys may end up in a masterpiece someday.

    Museums

Believe it or not, there are several museums in the United States that would welcome your donations to enhance their exhibits. These include the Strong Museum of Play and the Tulsa Children’s Museum. Contact each museum directly to see specific requirements. Your toys need not be in mint condition.

    Children’s Hospitals

See one that has toys in the waiting room? It’s likely that they were donated. When facing medical treatments – or simply waiting for a family member – most will welcome the distraction that your donation can give.

    Foster Programs

Foster kids are often shuttled from house to house and many foster families don’t have a lot of extra money to spend on toys. That’s why organizations such as Foster Cares are always in need of donations. Contact your local Department of Social Services to find a similar program in your area.

    Preparing Toys to Donate

Each organization that takes donated toys has guidelines for what types of items are accepted. Most request that donations are in good condition and in proper working order, simply because they don’t have the resources to repair broken items. Some are hesitant to accept used stuffed animals because of concern about the potential for transferring germs.

Before dropping off secondhand toys at a nonprofit organization call to verify that the types of items you want to give are things the agency needs. If the organization you contact isn’t able to utilize what you want to donate, it’s likely that the person you speak with will be able to refer you to another charitable group that is in desperate need of the items you have.

Ford Fiesta review: can new version remain Britain’s favourite car?

F ord has sold more than 4.5 million Fiestas in the UK since its launch in 1976, a million of which were the predecessor of the car you see here. So this latest Fiesta has awfully big boots to fill, which Ford aims to achieve by offering a smarter interior, more space and a glut of new technology, along with a model line-up that ranges from the basic three- or five-door hatchbacks to the sporty ST and more luxurious Vignale.

The engine range features a 1.1-litre petrol, a 1.0-litre turbocharged ‘Ecoboost’ petrol, and a 1.5 turbodiesel, while the long list of talented rivals includes the Nissan Micra. Seat Ibiza. Skoda Fabia. Vauxhall Corsa. Mazda2. Hyundai i20 and plenty more besides.

    Space 7/10

Bigger than the old model, but only just

T here’s no doubt the latest Fiesta is a larger car on the outside than the one it replaces, but somehow that doesn’t translate to huge gains in interior space. The boot, for example, is only marginally bigger than before, and thus still comfortably beaten by the Skoda Fabia and Seat Ibiza. You also need to pay extra for an adjustable boot floor to level the load space when the rear seats are folded.

R ear seat passengers don’t gain by a huge amount over the old Fiesta either, for while it is possible to carry one tall adult behind another, anybody over six-foot will find their head brushing the roof lining and their knees touching the seat in front. What’s more, the narrow base of the door makes it awkward to swing a pair of size 10s in and out of the car.

If anything it’s in the front that the Fiesta feels like a slightly bigger and more grown up car than before, helped by its smart design, large windows and a sensible amount of storage.

    Comfort 10/10

    Excellent by any measure

F ord has done well not to mess with what has long been a winning formula as far as the Fiesta’s suspension is concerned, meaning the new model soaks up bumps brilliantly, without ever feeling too soft. It’s at its best on 16-inch wheels or smaller, but even upgrading to 17-inch rims isn’t as disastrous for ride comfort as one might expect.

Road noise is about as well contained as you could hope for in a car of this size, and while there’s some wind noise at motorway speeds it’s far from intrusive.

D rivers of all sizes should be able to find a good driving position thanks to plenty of adjustment in the controls, and the petrol engines are impressively smooth throughout the rev range. Ford’s 1.5 diesel engine isn’t quite such a refined performer in the Fiesta, but is only expected to account for a tiny percentage of sales.

Book a free Ford Fiesta home test drive

T he view out of the Fiesta is no better than many of its rivals (and some, such as the Peugeot 208, have even better visibility), so it’s a shame that the otherwise well-equipped Zetec misses out on parking sensors or Ford’s rear view camera as standard.

T hat said, the way Ford has made the pedals and steering so precisely weighted means that the Fiesta is still a very intuitive car to drive, and the turbocharged Ecoboost engine in particular responds well. The gearboxes are also light and accurate to use, if missing the satisfying action of the previous Fiesta, while the six-speed automatic is smooth, if not the quickest to respond when you need a downshift.

    Fun to drive 10/10

    An absolute joy to drive

Q uite simply this latest Fiesta is a joy to drive, with the kind of steering accuracy and overall agility that is sure to put a smile on your face when you hit a winding back road. It also has strong, responsive brakes, tremendous front-end grip and just enough body lean to let you know when you’re trying, without ever feeling wayward.

True, the non-turbo 1.1-litre engine can feel a little flat, but opt for any of the 1.0-litre turbocharged Ecoboost units and you’ll have easily enough performance.

    Reliability 7/10

    Rivals offer much longer warranties

Ford’s warranty lasts for three years or 60,000 miles, whichever comes first. It’s about the minimum a manufacturer can get away with these days, with others offering much better alternatives, such as the four years you get with a Renault Clio, the five years offered on a Toyota Yaris or Hyundai i20, or the seven years supplied with a Kia Rio.

A t least Ford has a reasonably good reputation for reliability. The manufacturer came 7th out of the 24 included in the 2016 JD Power Vehicle Dependability Survey, placing it above Nissan, Renault and Honda. In addition, the previous version of the Fiesta scores highly in the Warranty Direct Reliability Index based on the frequency and cost of aftermarket warranty claims, which bodes well for running costs in the longer term.

Hybrid Cars Pros and Cons Benefits Problems

My wife and I thought we were doing well with our Subaru wagons since we had avoided the purchase of a gas guzzling SUV. Our Subies are fun to drive, hold lots of stuff, and usually see about 22 miles to the gallon.

Nevertheless, our Outback was starting to get up there in miles and was generating repair bills that were uncharacteristic for a Subaru. Being fascinated with hybrid technology, we finally decided to take the plunge and replace the old Outback with a newer hybrid.

We carefully weighed the arguments for buying a new vs. used car. We realized there weren t any reasonably equipped new hybrids for less than $20,000, so we settled on a loaded 2007 Prius in pristine condition. Here is what we learned.

    Benefits of Hybrid Cars

    1. Hybrid Cars Show You How to Drive Efficiently

Just like a Jeep is in its element when driven off-road, and a Ferrari likes to be driven like a race car, a hybrid desperately wants to be driven efficiently. Our Toyota Prius, like most hybrids, has a display that shows our present mileage as well as average miles per gallon. It even tells us how much energy we recoup with the brakes.

All cars get better mileage when you accelerate and brake gently. But with a hybrid, you can see it, especially when you accelerate gradually enough so that only the electric engine is used. Normally I love to drive fast, but I ve discovered myself unexpectedly enjoying the challenge of driving efficiently.

    2. You Can Beat the EPA Mileage Estimates

Our goal was to double our observed fuel economy from the 22 mpg we had been getting with the Subaru. While we would have been happy with 44 mpg, or even the EPA rating of 48 mpg in the city, we were astonished to regularly see our fuel efficiency in the mid 50s. We credit efficient driving, aided by the Prius display, as the key to beating the EPA mileage estimates.

Hybrids are unique in that their EPA mileage ratings are actually higher in the city than they are on the highway. Our Prius is perfectly suited to my wife s daily commute in stop and go traffic. Every time you stop, it generates more electricity which can then be used at lower speeds, or for accelerating quickly. It is in town where we see our mileage jump above 50 mpg.

    4. Hybrids Have Multi-Engine Power

As a pilot with a sport pilot license, I appreciate the difference between a single engine airplane and the power of a multi-engine craft. The Prius is no hot rod, but, unlike a Ferrari, it actually comes with two engines. Its small gasoline engine is complemented by a powerful electric engine. Electric engines produce all of their torque from 0 rpm (revolutions per minute), a feature that allows the Prius to really scoot through an intersection from a stop. It is kind of like the snap you feel in your wrist when you operate a powerful electric hand tool.

Starting this car is about as much of an event as turning on a light switch. When the car begins to move, it is so silent that you are confused into thinking it is rolling downhill by itself. This is because the gasoline engine isn t running and the electric engine is noiseless.

Mechanics will tell you that when you start an engine cold, it is harder to crank and produces more engine wear than when you start one that s already been warmed up. In researching the Prius, I learned that it prevents cold starts by storing coolant in the equivalent of a thermos. This system keeps the fluid warm for up to three days. We are looking forward to enjoying easy starts and instant heat next winter.

    7. No Emissions Tests Required

When I inquired about registering my car, I was told that a hybrid does not need an emissions test to be registered. Since your state s laws may differ from those here in Denver, Colorado, check with your local DMV to see if an emissions or other test is required for registration.

One of the big myths out there is that the components of a hybrid will wear out and be costly to replace. Consumer Reports recently tested a 2001 Prius with over 200,000 miles; they found it still performed nearly identically to the 2001 Prius they tested new, and the hybrid battery was working fine.

Every time I mentioned that I was buying a hybrid, I was warned about the battery failing. There is a popular myth that the battery is unreliable and a replacement is shockingly expensive. Consumer Reports notes that Toyota sells replacement batteries for $2,300 to $2,600. Practically speaking, if you had to replace a battery on a 10-year-old hybrid, you could pay about $500 for one from a salvage yard, just like you could if you had to replace any major component on an older car.

With that said, Toyota s hybrid batteries and all other hybrid specific parts normally have a warranty of eight years or 100,000 miles. In California, the warranty is 150,000 miles. Moreover, there are numerous reports of the Prius being driven over 200,000 miles on the original battery. Given the strong warranty and consumer reports, I am confident we will never have to replace our hybrid battery.

    10. Expect Less Maintenance

One of the neat things about a hybrid is that the gas engine is not running when you are stopped or driving slowly. It is amazing how often that happens in city driving. The result is that you are putting less wear on your engine. For this reason, Toyota only recommends oil changes every 5,000 miles, unlike my Subaru which specifies oil changes every 3,000 miles.

Its brakes should last longer too. Unless you have to brake suddenly, a hybrid regenerates electricity with a regenerative brake instead of applying the standard brakes. Since you could drive around all day without hardly using the conventional brakes, you can expect your brakes to need service far less often than a non-hybrid would. When the Prius was used in taxi fleets, it demonstrated less of a need for brake maintenance than its non-hybrid counterparts.

    Problems with Hybrid Cars

    1. Rising Gas Prices Equals Rising Hybrid Prices

We knew we had to pay a bit more for our used Prius due to gas prices rising. There weren t many hybrids on the market, and they were selling fast. Some sellers were even trying to get a ridiculous premium by advertising their used cars for almost what a new one would cost! However, unless gas prices plummet and stay low for a long time, we feel we will largely make up our purchase premium when it comes time to sell our car.

You won t find me driving my Prius on the highway in the right lane at 50 miles per hour; I can only take the efficiency thing so far. When driven at the speed of most highway traffic, you can expect mileage in the mid to lower 40s. This is great, but there are compact cars and diesels that can achieve this kind of efficiency at highway speeds.

    3. Not All Hybrids Are Equal

We also considered the very similar looking Honda Insight, but we were turned off by the fact that it is not a full hybrid, but rather a mild hybrid. Its gasoline engine shuts off when the car stops and it cannot run on its electric motor alone. It does not receive the fuel economy ratings of the Prius, and we were shocked to discover that its heat and air conditioning systems do not operate when the gasoline engine stops. That might be acceptable in a temperate climate, but it s not acceptable in Colorado. A mild hybrid might get better fuel economy than a conventional car, but it won t ever live up to the promise of a true hybrid.

We really wanted a larger vehicle with third row seating, but there is currently only one choice on the market. Toyota makes their Highlander Hybrid SUV with a third seat, but it is a huge vehicle with relatively poor mileage for a hybrid. Toyota recently announced they are coming out with a larger version of the Prius, but they will not offer a third row of seating in the version they plan to export to the United States.

We were most surprised to discover that our Prius actually has a conventional 12 Volt battery just like any other car, in addition to the larger high voltage battery. This smaller battery provides power to the accessories, and like any other car, the Prius will need a jump start if this battery is drained. We accidentally left an interior light on overnight and couldn t start the car in the morning it turns out that accidentally draining the conventional battery is a common problem. Many Prius owners buy an aftermarket battery for $180 when the original one finally gives out, as the aftermarket version is reported to last much longer than the standard model Toyota uses.

    Final Word

Through careful research, I was able to dispel many of the frightening myths going around about hybrid ownership. At the same time, we have no illusion that our Prius will always be perfectly reliable and maintenance free during the years we own it. What we do have is the reasonable belief, based on hard evidence, that this vehicle will be at least as reliable as a standard car while delivering more than twice the fuel economy of our Subaru.

So far, we are extremely satisfied with our purchase. Until the day we buy a full electric car, it is difficult to imagine there will be a time when at least one of our cars is not a hybrid.

Do you own a hybrid car? What has your experience been like?

    Best company cars 2016

If you’re choosing a company car our guide to the best company cars 2016 will help you find the perfect match

Company cars are still big business in the UK, with around a half of all new sales going to the fleet market.

So manufacturers are keen to cash in, even developing special ‘business models’ to maximise value for money for thousands of user chooser motorists. These machines are kitted out with extras that help them stand out in the corporate car park and ease the stresses and strains of life on the road.

But which model makes the most business sense? To help, we’ve crunched the numbers and scrutinised the spec sheets to pick some of the cars that’ll beat down your Benefit-in-Kind bills; our colleagues at online car retailer BuyaCar.co.uk explain what BIK is and why it’s significant (below). Our picks were split into five price categories and we named six of the best in each. As company car taxes are based on CO2 emissions, all our choices are clean and efficient. But you won’t be lumbered with a stripped-out eco special.

In fact, you’ll be amazed at the variety of machinery you’ll be able to get your hands on, because the constant drive to improve efficiency and the fierce fight for sales means you can get a lot of car for your cash.

From city cars to hybrids, people carriers to premium saloons, there’s something for everyone, plus they won’t leave a large dent in your wallet when the Inland Revenue calls.

But picking a company car doesn’t always have to be all about the bottom line. To prove it, in each price band we’ve selected a fun choice that will put a smile on your face when you’re driving it and see how much it’ll save you.

What is BIK and what will it cost me?

Annual Benefit-in-Kind (BIK) tax is charged on a proportion of a company car’s brand new value. It’s determined by CO2 emissions – benefiting electric cars. Lower-rate earners pay 20 per cent of this proportion; higher-rate taxpayers 40 per cent.”

    Company car numbers guide

A company car is essential for many drivers’ work, but Her Majesty’s Revenue Customs sees it as a perk. The Government calls it a Benefit in Kind and, as with your wages, it’s liable to tax.

The amount of salary you have to sacrifice to get your hands on a company car depends on a number of factors, including the model’s CO2 emissions and P11D value. The latter is essentially the price of the car, including any options, minus the non-taxable costs such as the registration fee and the first year’s road tax.

There are currently 25 Benefit in Kind (BIK) bands, each based on a car’s CO2 emissions. The lowest-polluting cars attract a seven per cent BIK rate, with the highest levied at 37 per cent.

Until recently, electric cars were exempt from these charges, but these zero-emissions machines are now rated at seven per cent. Crucially, this figure is set to increase each year; by 2019 battery-powered models will be taxed at 16 per cent.

It’s also worth keeping in mind that diesel models have a three per cent surcharge over petrol versions with the same emissions. So make sure you do enough miles that the fuel savings outweigh the bigger BIK bills.

The final part of the company car cost calculations involves your salary. If you fall into the 20 per cent income tax bracket, you’ll pay 20 per cent of the P11D value, while higher-rate earners will fork out 40 per cent. Usually this will be deducted from your monthly pay packet.

The 6 secrets of cheap car insurance quotes

It’s never more important than to get the best premiums possible, es[ecially with car insurance price hikes appearing over the past 18 months.

So important that to be sure you’re getting the best quote, we put together five questions you must absolutely ask to make some serious savings.

Still, sometimes car insurance premiums make sense. If people live near where there’s a lot of car crime or own expensive cars, well they pay more. It makes sense.

There are lengths people don’t know that insurers have gone on just to get that accurate premium, such as working out that surgeons normally have more accidents than other professions or that Virgoes were the worst for accidents last year compared to Pisces who had more convictions.

That means they will up your premium based on age, sex, job, post code and where you park as well as what you drive.

So here we’ll go further than just what questions to ask – six ways to get cheaper car insurance that they’d probably prefer you didn’t know.

    1. Use the right job title

Multi-tasking. Mum holds baby, talks on telephone and cooks the dinner

If you describe yourself as a “chef” when filling in your car insurance application your average quote is higher than if you write “kitchen staff” comparison site GoCompare.com found – and it’s not just cooks that have this problem.

This recurs basically if your job fits more than one category – for example, “Music teachers” pay more than “teachers”, “office managers” pay more than “office administrators”, and “construction workers” pay more than “builders” who – in turn – pay more than “bricklayers”.

On the flipside, describing yourself as a parent, housewife, house-husband or retired instead of being unemployed will reduce your premium.

While it’s worth experimenting to see what different job titles affect your premium, make sure to not lie about your job i.e. don’t say you’re a butcher if you’re a baker. That is illegal and could get you prosecuted for fraud.

    2. Add another more experienced driver to the policy

Okay maybe not someone who texts while driving.

It’s a crime to say someone who isn’t the main driver of a car is but it’s perfectly legal to add in a secondary driver to your cover and can easily save you money.

First get permission then add a more experienced driver with a clean driving license and decent no-claims history to your insurance.

    3. Never leave it till the last minute

It appears that most insurers exploit the panic of drivers who buy at the last minute, usually when their existing cover is close to expiration.

By contrast, the best time to buy cover would be three weeks before existing policies expire, as insurers were more likely to compete on price, given that drivers would have found more time to shop around.

    4. Get some cash back

    (Photo: ARIS MESSINIS/AFP/Getty Images)

Comparison sites make money by getting a referral fee from insurers when they convince consumers top switch products with them.

If you look around though, you can get some of that money yourself.

Some comparison sites offer as much as 30% cash back.

Once you’ve finished comparing sites and found the cheapest deal, head over and see if you can get an even better deal by switching through a cashback site.

    5. Pay up front

Sometimes it doesn’t pay to spread.

Be sure to pay up front as many insurers charge interest on your payments if you spread out the cost over the year?

Better to take that big pill first rather than try to spread even as it’ll actually cost you more in the long run.

    6. Cut your extras and boost your excess

The thing with extras is that every single one adds to the premium. Things such as breakdown cover, windscreen cover, theft from the car, driving abroad, personal accident cover, courtesy car and more.

Even then, a lot of the above could already be covered by other things such as travel insurance, AA membership, home insurance or even your bank account.

Make sure to check that you’re not double paying for anything and just check if you really need those extras. Also, check on how much excess is on your policy.

This is how much you have to pay yourself to make a claim.

The lower the excess, the higher the car insurance so work out what you can afford to pay in case of an accident and set your excess to that – even the difference of say €50 can be worth it.

    AAR Railroad Reporting Marks

A railroad reporting mark, officially known as a standard carrier alpha code (SCAC), is a two to four letter code assigned by Railinc (for-profit subsidiary of the Association of American Railroads, or AAR) that uniquely identifies the owner of a piece of railroad rolling stock. The mark is stenciled on the sides of equipment such as locomotives, freight cars, and passenger cars. The number that follows a reporting mark is a fleet/car number assigned by the owner. The combined reporting mark (code and number) is used by railroads, railcar owners, and shippers to identify and track equipment. All railcars in interchange service (between railroads) must be labeled with a reporting mark.

The railroad reporting mark is generally derived from the assigned company’s initials. Due to mergers and acquisitions, some companies now possess dozens of reporting marks from predecessor companies. Equipment is often re-stenciled following a change of ownership, but it is not uncommon to see railcars still bearing the reporting marks of fallen flag railroads.

This list of reporting marks is updated on an ongoing basis and does represent active marks at any given time. Some of the listed reporting marks are assigned to now defunct railroads. Others are assigned to current companies but may not be found on any active equipment. Where multiple names are included for a given mark, the current (or most recent) owner name is provided in parenthesis.

Marks that end in X, Z, and U are specially assigned to the following:

    • X marks . assigned to railcar owners that are not common carrier railroads . These may include private car owners, leasing companies, and railroad museums.
    • Z marks . assigned to trailer owners for use ontrailers in trailer on flatcar (TOFC) or piggyback service.
    • U marks . assigned to container owners for use on intermodal containers .

Marks that end in any other letter are assigned to common carrier railroads for use on railroad equipment in interchange service.

Note about container and trailer marks. The U codes for international intermodal containers are assigned by the Bureau International des Containers et du Transport Intermodal (BIC), not by the AAR. There are now thousands of registered codes due to the rapid increase in intermodal transport in recent years. Some of the more commonly seen reporting marks on North American railroads are included in this list of railroad reporting marks. If you’re looking for a container code not included below, please use the free searchable database available on the BIC website. Codes for containers exclusively used in North America, plus those registered by North American non-railroad transportation companies, are assigned by the National Motor Freight Traffic Association (NMFTA). A database of these non-railroad SCACs is available for a fee on the NMFTA website .

RailServe.com list of 4,903 railroad reporting marks. Updated November 2016.
