What s a Nurse Practitioner? #nurse #practitioners, #nps, #np, #apn, #certified #family

What’s a Nurse Practitioner?

What’s an NP?

A nurse practitioner (NP) is a registered nurse (RN) who has additional education and training in a specialty area, such as family practice or pediatrics. Pediatric and family practice NPs can provide regular health care for kids.

Nurse practitioners (also referred to as advanced practice nurses, or APNs) have a master’s degree in nursing (MS or MSN) and board certification in their specialty. For example, a pediatric NP has advanced education, skills, and training in caring for infants, children, and teens.

Licensed as nurse practitioners and registered nurses, NPs follow the rules and regulations of the Nurse Practice Act of the state where they work. If accredited through the national board exam, the NP will have an additional credential, such as Certified Pediatric Nurse Practitioner (CPNP) or Certified Family Nurse Practitioner (CFNP).

An NP who specializes in pediatrics can:

  • document health history and perform a physical exam
  • plan a child’s care with parents and the child’s health care team
  • do some tests and procedures
  • answer questions about health problems
  • treat common childhood illnesses
  • specialize in and manage chronic illnesses
  • change the plan of care with a child’s doctor as needed
  • teach families about the effects of illness on a child’s growth and development
  • teach kids about self-care and healthy lifestyle choices
  • write prescriptions
  • order medical tests
  • teach other health care members, student nurses, and local groups about children’s health care
  • provide referrals to community groups
  • provide telemedicine care for children and their parents

NPs and Doctors

Most NPs maintain close working relationships with doctors and consult them as needed. NPs are licensed in all 50 states and can dispense most medicines. Some states require a doctor to co-sign prescriptions. In a few states, NPs can practice and prescribe without physician supervision.

Although doctors have additional training to help patients deal with complex medical problems, many people feel that NPs spend more time with their patients. NP training emphasizes disease prevention, reduction of health risks, and thorough patient education.

Like doctors, NPs are involved in more than just direct patient care. Many participate in education, research, and legislative activities to improve the quality of health care in the United States.

Should My Kids See a Nurse Practitioner?

Pediatric NPs can deliver much of the health care that kids require, consulting doctors and specialists as necessary. Educating kids and their families about normal growth and childhood development issues (e.g. toilet training. temper tantrums. biting ) is a big part of the pediatric NP’s role.

Pediatric and family practice NPs can treat acute (short-term) illnesses such as upper respiratory infections, ear infections. rashes, and urinary tract infections. They can also specilaize in and manage chronic illnesses such as asthma. allergies. diabetes. and many others.

If your child has severe health problems that require advanced training or highly specialized medical care, you may need to see a doctor. If you’re unsure about your child’s specific illness and want to know if an NP can help, ask your doctor. The scope of an NP’s practice depends upon your state’s regulations.

If you want to verify an NP’s credentials, check with the American College of Nurse Practitioners (ACNP). It’s also a good idea to ask NPs about their specific qualifications, education, and training, just as you would interview any doctor for your child.

Also be sure to check with your health insurance provider to be sure that services provided by NPs are covered through your policy.

How Can I Find an NP?

You can find pediatric NPs through the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners (NAPNAP) and through local hospitals or nursing schools. Also, many doctors share office space with NPs to provide all types of primary care. Other doctors work with NPs to offer them training in different types of health care. Your doctor might already have such an arrangement in place, so just ask.

5 Reasons to Become a CRC® – Certified Retirement Counselor® #become #certified

Why Become a CRC® Professional?

Become a Certified Retirement Counselor® so you can be recognized as a true retirement planning professional.

InFRE created the CRC ® in 1997 to raise the retirement readiness of the American Worker by advancing recognition among retirement planning professionals of the need for a retirement specific certification program.

5 Reasons to Become a CRC ®

There are five reasons why should you earn the more comprehensive, complete-scope-of-retirement planning CRC® certification instead of one that narrowly focuses only on retirement income. The CRC® program:

  1. Is independently accredited, by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies
  2. Is developed by professionals, for professionals and is continually kept up-to-date and relevant
  3. Demonstrates a mastery of both retirement accumulation and distribution planning
  4. Earn CFP ® and state insurance continuing education (CE) credits* when you prepare for the CRC ® exam
  5. Certificants commit to adhere to a Code of Ethics .

Register here for the CRC® program.

Reason #1: The CRC ® is independently accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA)

Obtaining NCCA accreditation required the CRC ® certification program be vetted to meet the highest standards regarding governance, responsibility to stakeholders, exam process, and recertification on the merits of the program itself – an important difference from designations being offered by accredited colleges. Hence, the CRC ® ’s independent, third-party program accreditation signifies that CRC ® Certificants are an elite group of qualified retirement professionals among the array of retirement-related designations available today.

As a result of independent accreditation, the CRC ® mark is approved for use in states that regulate senior designations, now allowing financial professionals in all 50 states the ability to use the CRC ® mark in their communications with the public.

Many compliance departments have approved the mark for use as well. If you are an advisor and restricted by your current employer or broker/dealer from using your CRC ® mark, please contact us for help. We are happy to work with your Compliance/Advertising Review Department to provide the documents they need to approve the use of the CRC ® .

Learn more about CRC ® ’s program policies here: CRC ® Program Policies manual

Reason #2: The CRC ® program is developed by professionals, for professionals

The Certified Retirement Counselor ® (CRC ® ) certification is a one-of-a-kind professional development program that enables financial professionals to address the challenges facing today’s retirees. The CRC ® program was developed over a two-year period of original research and analysis by a team of 100 highly-respected retirement practitioners in partnership with the academic guidance of the Center for Financial Responsibility at Texas Tech University, one of the leading financial planning universities in the country. The CRC ® Test Specifications address retirement planning and income management issues from multiple perspectives—including those faced in both private and government sector employer-sponsored retirement plans.

The CRC ® program enhances a professional’s understanding of retirement planning concepts and principles. Many who have earned the CRC ® certification comment that the CRC ® curriculum’s focus on applying a retirement planning and income management process enhances their ability to tangibly demonstrate expertise and commitment to better serve clients’ retirement planning needs.

CRC® Study Guides

The total fee when paying for your study guides and the CRC examination fee separately is therefore $1,024 ($499 study guides + $525 exam). You can save $149 (15%) by paying only $875 for both the study guide and exam fees now.

CRC® 1: Fundamentals of Retirement Planning Course #1 provides techniques for understanding the broad variety of factors that can affect a client s retirement goals. You will also learn methods for motivating and educating clients on the need to save for retirement.

Click here to view a sample.

Reason #3: The CRC ® program demonstrates a mastery of both retirement accumulation and distribution planning

Today’s other retirement credentials typically cover only accumulation planning OR only distribution planning – not both. The CRC ® program is the only retirement-specific certification that prepares financial professionals for meeting today’s comprehensive retirement planning needs.

The CRC ® Certification Test Specifications outline in detail the knowledge and task proficiency needed for Candidates to pass the exam. The five domains of practice are as follows:

Domain 1: Identify Needs, Concerns and Goals in Terms of Quantitative and Qualitative Factors by Career Stage/Phase of Retirement
Domain 2: Design Retirement-readiness and Post-retirement Strategies within the Context of the Regulatory, Legal, Operational and Structural Environment
Domain 3: Facilitate the Implementation of the Retirement-readiness and Post-retirement Strategies
Domain 4: Evaluate, Adjust, and Document Retirement Strategies Across Career Stages/Retirement Phases
Domain 5: Provide Education Materials and Programs

If you’re seeking one credential that is designed to help you best serve BOTH the accumulation and distribution planning needs of the mid-market, look no further than the CRC ® !

Reason #4: Earn CFP ® and state insurance continuing education (CE) credits when you prepare for the CRC ® exam

In addition to an ongoing education requirement, you can earn continuing education while preparing for the exam if you purchase the CRC ® study guides and satisfactorily complete the online quizzes related to CRC ® 1 4 study guides. CRC 1 4 have been approved for 5 hours of CFP ® CE credit (20 hours total). CRC 1 4 study guides have also been approved in most states for insurance license CE credit. Click here to view states granting CE approval and the number of hours approved.

To maintain certification status, CRC ® Certificants must earn and submit fifteen (15) hours of continuing education (CE) annually. CRC ® CE requirements may be fulfilled with firm element training and other required internal training programs. Insurance license and other license/certification CE may also apply. All CRC ® CE is self-reporting. Though CE courses do not require pre-approval, submitted CE can be rejected if it does not properly meet CE standards as outlined in the CRC ® Program Policy Manual .

Reason #5: CRC ® Certificants commit to adhere to a Code of Ethics

All CRC ® Certificants must complete an annual renewal of their certification, which requires signing a Certificate Holder’s Statement that indicates adherence to the CRC ® Code of Ethics. A CRC ® Certificant agrees to follow within his or her professional activities both traditional ethical principles and the letter and spirit of the state and federal laws that regulate retirement advice, records, and transactions.

Nursing assistant programs prepare individuals for challenging the nurse aide certification exam and for entry level positions in health care environments. Each state has the authority to decide how many hours of training a nursing assistant course must consist of, as long as the minimum federal requirement of seventy-five hours is met. Students interested in attending CNA classes have a wide array of choices when it comes to selecting a training facility.

Nursing assistant courses are conducted at nursing homes, vocational schools, private schools, and community colleges. Program length, admission requirements, and cost of training vary depending on the policies of every training facility. Several states have implemented legislation which requires licensed long-term care facilities to reimburse CNA employees for the costs associated with training. An individual who has paid for nursing assistant training classes and who becomes employed by a nursing home within a year of obtaining certification, is eligible for financial reimbursement. Compared to other training programs in the health care field, nursing assistant classes are relatively short and inexpensive. Obtaining state certification as a CNA is the main requirement for securing a nurse aide job at a nursing home, hospital, rehabilitation or skilled nursing facility.

Questions, Comments, Suggestions

C. Adams on November 8, 2014 at 11:22 AM
Is it possible to enroll in a CNA class without a high school diploma or GED?

Admin on November 8, 2014 at 05:34 PM
There are no federal regulations stating that individuals are required to have a high school diploma prior to attending nurse aide classes but some states such as Florida require a high school diploma or its equivalent prior to testing if you are under 18 years old and have not attended a training program. A program coordinator at the school or nursing facility which is offering CNA training classes may tell you if a high school diploma or equivalent (GED) is required in order to enroll in the nurse aide program. Some facilities do not require a diploma as long as you have completed a 10th grade high school education. In the state of Texas a high school diploma or a GED is not necessary in order to attend and complete a nursing assistant program.

CNA Resources

CNA Training Requirements

There is a wide disparity between CNA training requirements among the states. The difference lies in the mandatory number of total training hours necessary to complete state-approved CNA classes .

While according to federal law each nursing assistant course should contain a minimum of seventy-five (75) instruction and clinical hours, individual states have the liberty to mandate extra training requirements for certified nursing assistants. The majority of states exceed the threshold federal minimum requirements for nurse aide training programs because they are considered insufficient to result in an optimal and safe level of care for clients.

A review of nationwide state requirements for nurse assistant courses has found that the following states have mandated highest number of CNA program hours: Maine with a minimum of 90 hours of theory, 20 hours of laboratory skills and 70 hours of clinical instruction for a total of 180 hours; California with one hundred and sixty (160) training hours; Delaware and Oregon each requiring one hundred and fifty (150) hours; followed by the state of Alaska with one hundred and forty (140) hours; Virginia, Arizona, and West Virginia have a minimum of one hundred and twenty (120) training hours for state-approved classes.

Pike Nurseries, Cumming

The Cumming store opened in 1998 in the Pinetree Village Shopping Center at Bethelview Road and Atlanta Highway, less than a mile west of The Avenue Forsyth and GA 400.

A short drive from Lake Lanier, the Cumming store primarily serves the residents of Forsyth County, north Fulton County, Hall County, Dawsonville, Alpharetta and Buford. What was once a sleepy recreational area is now a bustling metro Atlanta community.

John was so helpful! I owe him one. He gave me great advice and really helped me out. Thank you. – Ashley

Terry was most helpful. I was here yesterday and today and she went above and beyond. She is a great asset to the store! – Tootsie

Faye helped me today for the first time and she was wonderful. Took the time to find what I needed – lots of information, garden knowledge and so friendly. – Anne

Frank provides superior, excellent customer service! He was so very helpful, patient and knowledgeable. He is an excellent employee focusing on customer service. – Kathryn

Becky helped us choose a pot and planter today. She was superb! Very courteous, kind and aware of what our budget was. Very impressed with her. – Leslie

Can I just take a second and give a shout out to Carol at the Cumming/Bethelview Road location. My husband and I came in yesterday because we are considering planting a peach tree on the side of our home. Not only did Carol answer all our questions, but offered a wealth of knowledge that we didn’t even realize we needed to know before making the investment. She took time to explain everything and when we mentioned wanting to plant an herb garden, walked us through the entire herb section offering additional tips there as well – what to plant with what, how to cook with them, and even opened our eyes to the unbelievably amazing Pineapple Sage plant. We left with a few different items, but will definitely be back this weekend for more once the weather warms up. This was my first time visiting a Pike location and I’m completely sold – I felt like I was walking through a little slice of heaven and Carol, taking time out of her day, made it that much more enjoyable of an experience! – Jenn

Linda provides excellent customer satisfaction! She greets me with a warm smile, is patient to answering my questions, attentive and ready with sound plant knowledge when I need it. Thank you Linda! You have been a “go-to-person” for me at Pike. – Karen

    Certified Nursing Assistant Training, Classes and Programs #certified #nursing #assistant, #cna #training,

Free CNA Training, CNA Tips and CNA Classes, CNA Info

A Certified Nursing Assistant career is a great choice for someone who has a desire to help others but who may not have the time or money to attend nursing or medical school.

But that shouldn’t be interpreted to mean CNAs have few responsibilities and an easy work flow. The day-to-day activities of a CNA are varied and can be complicated one minute and a breeze the next; but the work is seldom routine.

CNA work is appealing due to its hands-on nature and practitioner’s ability to work closely with doctors and gain vast amounts of applicable medical knowledge without years of academic training. The work is also incredibly stable as CNAs fill an essential healthcare role that is expected to become even more in demand in coming years as an expansive baby boomer population continues to age and require more and more medical care.

The required academic experience of a CNA is considerably less than that of a Registered Nurse who will likely have a minimum of a four-year bachelor’s degree or a doctor who may have eight or more years of school in addition to residency work. A CNA can expect to attend an accredited program for about two years to achieve an Associate’s Degree before undergoing certification testing. Some practices may require additional hands-on training but that varies by practice and does not follow a set routine.

Activities of a CNA may involve taking vital signs, weighing patients, assisting patients getting into or out of bed or walking, delivering messages, monitoring vital signs, collecting samples for testing, assisting with patient hygiene, feeding and monitoring food and liquid intake. CNAs may also assist doctors with diagnosis and treatment of conditions ranging from colds and flu to a yeast infection or more serious ailments such as diabetes and cancer.

This work may take place in a variety of settings that range from a doctor’s office or clinic to hospitals, long-term care facilities, rehabilitation facilities, outpatient care settings and even in-home environments where the CNA may work with limited supervision. It is important to know that a CNA is fairly low in the hierarchy of a medical practice’s staff and may be prone to being given jobs that are less desirable to others in the organization.

Currently, the average national salary for a CNA is about $29,000. While that may not seem like a lot compared to other professions, consider the stability and in-demand nature of the job. That is extremely beneficial, especially in a down economy. Additionally, CNAs pick up valuable knowledge along the way and with additional education have many doors to advancement available to them.

After President Nixon unilaterally de-link the dollar from the gold standard and went to China for trade talks, the American job market became very vulnerable.

Millions of high paying factory jobs were lost in America, and these jobs and factories were shipped to China to build the Chinese and Asian economies.

This process of massive job losses has continued to this day but there are some areas in the service sector where the jobs cannot be shipped to Third-World.

Certified Nursing Assistants and Pharmacists are in this uniquely positive position. Unlike factory workers who can be shown pink slips at any time and ruthlessly fired, Certified Nursing Assistants and Pharmacists are physically involved with the patients during the entire period at work [ ] Continue Reading

One of the most rapidly expanding specializations for Certified Nursing Assistants is in the area of home healthcare. As more and more independent-minded baby boomers settle into the senior age bracket and need living assistance, but aren’t willing to leave their homes for a special facility, this type of medical care is only expected to further grow in coming years.

CNAs have long been an integral part of the medical community, working in doctor’s offices, clinics and hospitals. Home healthcare adds another interesting facet to the field that has a reputation for being stable, well-paying and personally rewarding.

Home healthcare patients can range from those who recently had surgery and need extra assistance while they recuperate to those who can no [ ] Continue Reading

    ONC EMR / EHR Certification

    What is EHR Certification?

The Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) Health IT Certification Program is a voluntary certification program established by the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT to provide for the certification of health IT standards, implementation specifications and certification criteria. In order to capture and share patient data efficiently, providers need an EHR that stores data in a structured format. Structured data allows patient information to be easily retrieved and transferred, and it allows the provider to use the EHR in ways that can aid patient care. Certified EHR technology gives assurance to purchasers and other users that an EHR system or module offers the necessary technological capability, functionality, and security to help them meet the meaningful use criteria.

The Practice Fusion EHR is certified according to the criteria in 170.314(e)(1) transfer of care. In order for a provider to qualify for this measure they must be able to submit summaries of care to a third party via a direct message as a referral. Practice Fusion has partnered with Updox to provide the Direct messaging capability. Updox is a member of the DirectTrust HISP which means that providers can send referrals to any provider is also using a product that is a member of the DirectTrust HISP.

The Practice Fusion EHR is certified according to the criteria in 170.314(f)(2) transmission to immunization registries and 170.314(f)(3) transmission to public health agencies – syndromic surveillance. Presently Practice Fusion is connected with all public health states and regions for submission of immunization data, however, is not currently connected with any states or regions for syndromic surveillance. In order to submit data for syndromic surveillance, the provider can download the syndromic surveillance file and upload it to the appropriate public health registry manually.

With the changes to the Certification Guidelines with 2014 Release 2 in October of 2015, and the updated CMS guidelines for Objective 10 for 2016 eligible providers are required to submit clinical data to 2 of 4 available options within the objective. This includes submitting data to Immunization, Syndromic Surveillance, Cancer and Specialty registries. Given that Practice Fusion is only certified for the first two items (Immunizations and Syndromic Surveillance), providers are limited to using the other certified features for manually creating clinical summaries in either 170.314(b)(7) data portability or 170.314(e)(2) clinical summaries and then manually transferring those documents to the cancer or specialized registries. Alternatively, the provider could use the referral features to send a referral summary document to a registry that is enabled with a DIRECT address according to the 170.314(e)(1) transfer of care certification requirements.

Thread: Online MBA- Missouri State University or Eastern New Mexico University?

I don’t know anything about MSU but I used to live near the Portales, NM main campus of ENMU. You cannot imagine how different the area is from the usual conception of New Mexico. Flat, dry, agricultural and Baptist. Very Baptist. Very, very mild chile sauce. They even sometimes put TOMATOES in it. No wonder we call the area Little Texas !

But ENMU is a good school and those folks know what they are about. If you do decide to go with them, you will not regret it.

As a general note, I think they will accept a DETC bachelor’s degree.

The MSU is on my radar as well. I am looking for an AACSB for the lest amount of tuition, as I am coming out of my own pocket.
U of Louisiana – Monroe has an AACSB MBA program that is 30 credits (with a lot of prereq’s which you cant CLEP and DANTES), and will be under 15k. I am CLEPing Principles of Management and Principles of Marketing the first week of January in case I decide on this one, and studying for the GMAT in March.
The U of Nevada – Reno EMBA program is AACSB, and has a cohort program that has a high grad rate, at 24k. Since I live in NV, it has been on the top of my list as well.
Also considering U of North Dakota MBA. and could possibly end up in the UNLV EMBA program since it is local.
I guess I am looking for some sort of name recognition as well, or at least a state one part of a state University system. This is all a tough package to find at a discounted rate. I just do not see the ROI on spending more than 30k for an MBA. with so many of them being turned out by so many schools these days.
At least I have it more narrowed down than a few months ago.
