The College of Human Environmental Sciences is a senior academic unit in the State of Alabama offering professional programs in the field of human environmental sciences. Throughout its history, the college has achieved national reputation for excellence through the quality of its academic programs and faculty, as well as through the success of its graduates.

The College of Human Environmental Sciences is actively engaged in the transmission, generation, and dissemination of knowledge as conveyed in three main objectives: (1) to provide students with the intellectual curiosity and professional competence needed for careers in business, industry, government agencies, health care, and education; (2) to provide for the general education and intellectual growth of students in other divisions; and (3) to contribute to the body of knowledge that is the foundation for continued enrichment of the educational experience.

The College of Human Environmental Sciences is a student-centered research division with a diverse faculty who are involved in teaching, research, and service. Below we would like to feature some of our faculty who are heavily involved in a variety of research.

After a contest that spanned two months, the University of Alabama’s search for an official tartan is over. The university’s College of Human Environmental Sciences held the competition and selected the designs of three finalists. The winner was decided in an online vote. Linnzi Rich, a junior majoring in interior design, was announced the winner Friday during the college’s homecoming convention. Her “We are Crimson” design is made up predominantly of crimson and white with accents of black and gray… “In the early 1900s, tartan designs were primarily used in Scotland, and they were used to easily identify families and clans on the battlefield and in celebrations,” said Milla Boschung, Dean of the College of Human Environmental Sciences. “They were also used for identifying geographical regions.”

At the College of Human Environmental Sciences, our students are first and foremost. We are committed to the success of all of our students.

The College offers ten undergraduate majors that help students reach their professional goals. The CHES Office of Student Services, located in 101 Doster Hall, is committed to helping students have a successful and rewarding college experience. Please let us know how we can help.

Advising is an important part of your progress toward a degree. Please carefully review all of the advising information on your department’s website before making an appointment with your advisor; only then will you be prepared for advising.

For your advising appointment, do NOT miss or be late. Prepare a schedule using Schedule Builder located in myBama. Check sheets for each major are available in 101 Doster Hall or you may download them here .

Top 10 Business Clothing Faux Pas

Even in today`s business casual environment, I still get numerous questions from bosses, employees and even journalists about what`s appropriate to wear to work.

Recently a reporter asked about mistakes people make when dressing for work. I thought about what I have seen in the workplace and the recent stories from my seminar participants, and created the following list of the Top Ten Business Clothing Faux Pas:

1. Wearing clothes that are too big. You look like a little kid in your big brother`s or sister`s clothing! Your clothing needs to fit.

2. Showing cleavage. Sexy is not a corporate look. Low-cut tops that expose cleavage draw attention to this body part and are not appropriate in the office. I often coach women on this topic as many bosses are uncomfortable with this discussion.

3. Wearing a bikini when at a pool with business associates. Whether you are going on an award cruise or attending the company picnic, it`s not the time to expose everything! This applies to both men and women.

4. Wearing skirts that are too short. A short skirt draws attention to your legs. Is that where you want people to look? Plus, you can get labeled. A woman named Susan wore very short skirts and her coworkers referred to her as Suzy Short Skirt.

5. Having short socks. Short socks or socks that fall down expose skin and hairy legs when men sit and/or cross their legs.

6. Drawing attention to your clothing because of your color choices. Do you want to be remembered for what you said or what you wore? A man in one of my seminars wore bright green pants and wanted my opinion. “I said that since his slacks were not typical corporate clothing, he would probably be labeled as the man in green pants.”

7. Wearing T-shirts, shirts or ties with inappropriate sayings, pictures or childish designs. A candidate wore a shirt with small teddy bears to an interview. He didn`t get the job; the interviewers just kept talking about his shirt.

8. Forgetting about your shoes. People notice shoes. Your shoes should be clean, polished and in good condition.

9. Dressing inappropriately for business social events. The company holiday party, conferences or dinner at the boss`s house are still business events and your clothing choices matter.

10. Ignoring your grooming. Clothes need to be clean and pressed. Do not have chipped nail polish or nose hairs that need to be clipped. They become distractions.

With this guarantee in place, cleaning instead of replacement just makes sense, and by doing so you are saving nearly 90% of the cost of replacement. When you consider each household has literally hundreds of garments, it s easy to see those savings add up. So not only are you saving memories, you re saving money as well.

We’re on your schedule and here to save you time.

We are organized to respond to losses quickly and efficiently, being onsite within hours of your call. We pick up and deliver and we work diligently to ensure immediate need items are returned within 24 hours when necessary, and an itemized estimate gets to the adjuster or contractor within 72 hours or less.

We re on call 24/7 for emergency services
normal business hours of 8-5 for non-emergencies

Highly Detailed Inventory Processes

On each claim, we conduct a photographic inventory of each room, as well as a comprehensive itemized inventory of all textile contents by location in each room. Both inventories are available to the client and Adjuster or Contractor in hard copy, by email, or by special viewing on our website. Once in our facility, every item in a customer’s order receives an electronic bar code, which is scanned at every step of the restoration process. This allows us to electronically manage each and every item throughout the entire restoration process, and to ensure that our customers receive back every item we removed from their site.

Revolutionary Patented Cleaning Process

In 2002, Bryan Folk developed a new application process for ozone to clothing and fabric items in order to permanently remove odors from textile items. This process decreased the deodorization cycle time for fabric items from the traditional 24-hour cycle to a 1-hour cycle. Not only is this process more time and labor efficient, it is more thorough, and has therefore been one of the main contributing factors leading to the ability of Textile Restorations to salvage 98% of all items affected by fire, smoke, water or mold. The industry expectation for salvage rate is 85%. This means that on every claim where Textile Restorations is called in, the insurance company is only paying 2% toward replacement cost, which translates to a tremendous monetary savings for the carrier.

For the insured, this means that their items with sentimental value, like their wedding gown, child’s favorite stuffed animal, or their grandma’s quilt, can be saved 98 times out of 100. For this reason, we truly feel we are restoring our client’s way of life…one garment at a time!
