cloud database

Related Terms

A database accessible to clients from the cloud and delivered to users on demand via the Internet from a cloud database provider’s servers. Also referred to as Database-as-a-Service (DBaaS), cloud databases can use cloud computing to achieve optimized scaling, high availability, multi-tenancy and effective resource allocation.

While a cloud database can be a traditional database such as a MySQL or SQL Server database that has been adopted for cloud use, a native cloud database such as Xeround’s MySQL Cloud database tends to better equipped to optimally use cloud resources and to guarantee scalability as well as availability and stability.

Cloud databases can offer significant advantages over their traditional counterparts, including increased accessibility, automatic failover and fast automated recovery from failures, automated on-the-go scaling, minimal investment and maintenance of in-house hardware, and potentially better performance. At the same time, cloud databases have their share of potential drawbacks, including security and privacy issues as well as the potential loss of or inability to access critical data in the event of a disaster or bankruptcy of the cloud database service provider.

Top Personal Cloud Storage Systems

Updated June 07, 2017

We never seem to have enough storage space to contain all of our files and data. That personal computing devices and home networks often don’t possess enough built-in storage space to handle all of our data is nothing new. Over the years, however, network storage solutions have been developed to help with this:

  • USB keys (sticks) and external drives
  • Network Attached Storage (NAS) devices
  • cloud storage services on the internet

Each kind of network storage technology has advantages over the others, and Cloud storage has become especially popular as multiple providers now offer convenient internet-based services that can automatically transfer data from computers, tablets, and phones both at home and while roaming.

That Internet cloud systems send copies of personal data to unspecified far-away locations raises concerns over security and control. Vendors of Internet cloud systems put effort into improving their security safeguards, but these systems are a high-profile target for network hackers, and so the risk of breaches remains. Additionally, being reliant on a corporation to have access to one’s own data is not ideal.

Cloud Storage Systems

A special category of products offers cloud storage systems that combine the best features of both internet cloud storage and NAS devices. Instead of relying on remote data hosting, these systems support large amounts of local storage together with options for controlled online sharing.

Personal cloud storage systems are also available that offer large amounts of storage space for individual users at reasonable prices—and many offer a starter level of storage that is free—that do not require special hardware such as purchased storage drives. These services allow you to store files and data in the cloud and access them from multiple devices, such as laptops, desktops, smartphones, and tablets.

The following personal cloud storage systems are popular and represent internet cloud services that do not use special hardware like a storage drive, and those that work with devices that connect to a home network router via Gigabit Ethernet cable and support a range of Microsoft, Apple, Android and other clients.

iCloud

LaCie offers versions of the CloudBox external storage drive with 1 TB of storage up to 4 TB.

The vendor supports a remote access environment called MyNAS that enables users of a home network to access data on the unit remotely. The remote access services are reachable through the company’s MyNAS portal (mynas.lacie.com), and Apple devices can also be set up to run through an iOS app of the same name. More

Seagate Central

Available in 2, 3 and 4 TB capacities, Seagate Central is an external drive unit with cloud storage features similar to other products in this category. Free Seagate Media apps for iOS and Android provide client access for streaming video from Central (along with its support for other Seagate devices), while access.seagate.com provides remote Web-based file level access.

The company additionally has produced an app that runs on Samsung Smart TVs enabling streaming from Seagate Central to the television, billed as the first consumer storage device to offer such a feature. More

D-Link ShareCenter Cloud Storage

D-Link offers the mydlink (www.mydlink.com) portal for remote access to its ShareCenter family of NAS enclosures—the 2-bay Cloud Storage 2000 (DNS-320L) and 4-bay Cloud Storage 4000 (DNS-345) models—not to be confused with D-Link’s other NAS products. Depending on the drive storage capacities chosen (drives can be purchased separately), these Cloud Storage systems may support up to 8 TB (via two, 4 TB drives).

Online reviewers give mixed feedback on these systems, some dissatisfied with the vendor’s customer support, although D-Link backs the product with its 3-year limited warranty. More

How to backup your Android phone to the cloud

As you may have heard, March 31 was World Backup Day. Geeks across the Internet were sharing pointers on making sure that your computer s important data don t get lost in an unfortunate accident and we here at Android Authority would like to share a few methods in making sure your phone information doesn t go up in dust.

There are methods to store your important data locally that is, on your computer s hard drive. (If you want to make local backups, check out our guide on how to make local backups of your phone data .) But, some users would like the comfort that the cloud gives them. It s being prepared, to the second level. You won t need to worry about your phone, and you certainly won t need to worry about your computer. Besides, cloud-based backups allow you to access your data through many other devices from wherever you are.

Information stored in the cloud also means that you won t need to rely on wires to get that information back onto your Android device. Simply connect to the internet, connect to your cloud server of choice, and bring that data back into your phone. Read on to learn how to backup your Android phone to the cloud.

Backing up to your Google Account

One of the main benefits of Android is that you can connect your phone with your Google account. This means that you don t need to worry about leaving your bookmarks in either your computer or your phone and having to go without them. Google s linking to your device ensures that all your data is consolidated and easy for you to access. It s this same connection that makes it easy to back your phone data up with your phone s built-in settings.

If you d like to keep your contacts, system settings, apps, calendar and email data on your Google account, simply go to Settings Privacy on your phone. Check the boxes for Back up my settings and Automatic restore. Make sure that under Backup account you specify the Google account that you want to backup data for.

Next, go to Settings Account Sync. tap on the Google account you want to sync, and check all the available options. This way, your data will be stored in your easy-to-access Google account.

Photos

For those of you with devices running Android 2.2 and higher, Google s Instant Upload service allows you to upload photos and videos automatically. Enable Instant Upload and any photo or video you take is automatically uploaded to a private album on Google+ called From the Phone. Don t worry, they re visible only to you until you choose to share them. From the Google+ album, you can easily share them from your phone or from the web.

When you first sign in, you re prompted to enable or disable Instant Upload. In case you weren t able to enable Instant Upload, you can easily enable it through Menu Settings .

If you d like to upload your images to third-party sites, you can download Photobucket Mobile to automatically upload newly snapped pictures to your Photobucket account. You can also use Flickr Companion and Picasa Tool. both free apps that allow mobile uploading but don t do so automatically.

Android Apps for Backups

inDefend Mobile Backup

You might remember this app from when we wrote about backing up your phone data to the cloud with inDefend Mobile Backup. The article itself has more detailed information, but in short, inDefend Mobile Backup is an application that allows you to easily backup your information, such as your contacts, call logs, text messages and your calendar, to the cloud. Restore them remotely from the cloud is also possible. You ll need to create an inDefend Mobile Backup account to access your inDefend Mobile Backup features and cloud content.

inDefend Mobile Backup is available for free on the Google Play Store.

SMS Backup +

If you ve got important text messages and you don t want to waste precious time writing them down, there s SMS Backup +. This free app automatically sends your SMS threads to Gmail and stores them under the label SMS. Not only that, SMS Backup + also backs up MMS and call log entries. SMS Backup + also allows you to restore SMS and call log entries back to your phone, but unfortunately restoring MMS back to your phone is not yet possible at this time. Future updates may resolve this issue.

You can download SMS Backup + from the Google Play Store.

Sandisk Memory Zone

Sandisk Memory Zone allows you to backup files and apps from your phone s SD card to a cloud storage provider. This free app from the world-renowned maker of flash memory cards can backup to and restore from the following supported services: Box, Dropbox, Google Docs, Picasa, SugarSync, and Facebook.

You can even schedule your backups and completely customize a backup plan to your liking. Once you ve installed the app, it ll scan your SD card and your device s internal memory the first time you run it. You ll be able to choose a cloud storage provider where you d like to backup your data. Sandisk Memory Zone will prompt you for the frequency schedule of your backup, whether you d like it to be backed up only this time or everyday.

Sandisk Memory Zone is available for free from the Google Play Store.

There s no shortage of ways to backup your files and certainly no excuses. Make sure to backup your phone data before something unfortunate happens to your Android device. It ll only take a few minutes of your time but will definitely spare you the heartache that unrecoverable data will cause.

If, for whatever reason, you prefer local backups to cloud-based backups, check our post on how to make local backups of your Android phone data .

QNAP Adds More Cloud Backup Options

Mon, 02/16/2015 – 11:11 — Lyle Smith

QNAP Systems has announced the release of their CloudBackup Station, which adds more support for backing up data stored on a QNAP NAS devices to cloud storage services including Amazon S3, Amazon Glacier, Google, RackSpace, HP Cloud, IBM SoftLayer, WebDAV-compatible cloud storage. In addition, it gives users the ability to build a comprehensive plan for disaster recovery.

With this release, more cloud backup apps, such as S3 Plus, Glacier, Google Cloud Storage, OpenStack Swift and WebDAV, have been added and integrated with the CloudBackup Station. QNAP indicates that the easy-to-use interface allows users to seamlessly manage various cloud storage services through a corresponding app, monitor backup status with job logs, and arrange manual or scheduled backup tasks. In addition, CloudBackup Station enables the backup of data from one cloud account to different regions (e.g. Amazon S3, Amazon Glacier and Google Cloud Storage). CloudBackup Station also safeguards all data with an SSL connection and an AES 256-bit encryption to help ensure that user content stays protected both during file transfer and when stored on the public cloud.

To increase its cost-efficiency, CloudBackup Station supports backup file compression, regularly removes files based on pre-defined settings, and avoids backing up unnecessary data. It also allows users to filter files by type, size and date, which makes sure that only selected files are retained on the cloud.

Additionally, CloudBackup Station supports multi-job execution and multi-thread data transfer. It does this by splitting large files into smaller parts, which QNAP claims significantly speeds up the file transfer rate with improved work efficiency. File preview on the cloud is also enabled in order to save time from downloading superfluous files for data recovery.

CloudBackup Station is now available through the QTS App Center.

What Does In the Cloud Mean?

by Dave on December 2, 2010

A new set of terms has been circulating recently, including cloud computing, cloud applications, and in the cloud. I ve seen the quizzical expression on some when I mention these words, and get an occasional question about the meaning of these terms.

Cloud applications (programs) and services are running at least partially, over the Internet on a remote server or in the cloud. These services are accessed by the user with a browser. Cloud computing is a result of the increasing power of computers, the increasing speed of the internet and virtualization, which is the increasing capability of computers, and servers, to run virtual machines inside a physical machine.

Cloud applications aren t new, but the terminology is. Google Docs is a free Web-based word processor, spreadsheet, presentation, form, and data storage service. Google Docs has been around in various forms since 2005-2006. Wikipedia has a listing of cloud services here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Cloud_applications

Anti-virus services in the cloud are a fairly recent development. Scanning of the files is handled on a remote server rather than on a user s machine.

Here s an excellent post by Filter Joe about what it means to work in the cloud. http://bit.ly/ddSJQi

Omnichannel retail needs accurate stock data

Customers are more demanding than ever, both in brick and mortar stores and online, and want to buy what they want to buy and not something else. Instantly, and not later. Therefore making sure that a product in the right size and the right color is available for your customer is crucial these days. However, merchandise availability should not result in overstocked stores and the associated high capital cost. That is why accurate stock information at all times is key.

    Accurate stock data requires RFID

RFID technology makes it possible to automate your in-store stock management – resulting in optimal merchandise availability for your customers and an in-store stock accuracy of over 98%. Incorrect shipments, administrative errors and faulty ERP data that lead to unneeded out-of-stock situations are finally a thing of the past.

    RFID in the cloud

The !D Cloud software is a Software as a Service (SaaS) solution based on cloud computing with a multi-tenant database design (SaaS level 3). This makes !D Cloud a highly robust, internationally scalable and competitive solution.

    • Delivered over the cloud: access on any web browser
    • Reduced IT support costs by outsourcing software, system maintenance and support
    • Requires a smaller initial spend to license software
    • Software updates and ongoing enhancements become available as developed
    • Reduced time to benefit

To ensure interoperability between in-store solutions and other parts of the supply chain. D Cloud is based on the GS1 EPC standards. That means that RFID labels are encoded using the EPC SGTIN-96 standard, the readers communicate via the EPC Gen2v2 Air Interface (RAIN RFID) and the interfacing between systems is based on the EPCIS 1.1 standard.

    How to

How to get started with !D Cloud

Once you are convinced that using RFID with !D Cloud is the way forward, there are still preparations required to reap the benefits of RFID. Most of your articles need to be equipped with RFID labels. This is still a significant investment – if you haven’t proven RFID will work for your company. But, how can you prove RFID, if there are no products tagged?

Nedap Retail has a unique, low cost high impact, three stage approach that will solidify the business case for the usage of RFID in your company. This is how we have been successful with over 25 retailers to get RFID signed off at board level.

    1. Workshop In a workshop with your stakeholders and our business experts, we put together a business case based on the specifics of your business, our experience and benchmark it against results of comparable retailers.
    2. Pilot The business case is validated in a set of stores, with a selection of tagged merchandise. The products can be tagged in the DC or in store. We are there to support you with the whole process of initiating and running the pilot, step by step, for each store.
    3. Roll-out With a proven business case, we will prepare you for roll-out and take care of the end to end execution.

Typically it takes less than a month from the initial contact to the pilot.

How to get RFID on the products

To gain the benefits from using !D Cloud in your stores, the articles in your store need to have RFID labels on them. Nedap provides you with all the ways to do this, which allow you to move smoothly from proving the business case in a few stores to a full scale roll-out. Where in-store or DC tagging is replaced with source-tagging, we work together with the most advanced and reliable RFID label suppliers in the world and will take care of RFID-specific topics, like item serialization, best label/chip combination for your application selection and quality testing.

Of course it is possible to continue working with your existing trim provider as well. If needed, we will advise on the requirements and educate them on the RFID technology aspects and put processes in place to verify the quality and fit-for-purpose of the RFID labels they propose. In the end, the solution is only as good as the weakest link and we at Nedap like to partner with you to make sure the total solution works as designed and gets you the return on investment we jointly aimed for.

If your products already have RFID labels, great! If they are encoded with GS1 compatible standards, you can start with !D Cloud tomorrow.

If you wonder whether to choose an inventory solution using RFID handhelds or fixed RFID readers, we can help you out. Simply download the white paper “Deciding for a fixed RFID infrastructure” and find out what is right for your retail organization.

    How to program RFID labels

    1. Encode with handheld
The easiest way to program blank labels, is to do ‘Scan Encode’ with a handheld reader linked to the !D Cloud app. The employee will first scan the product barcode, and then in a second step program the serialized barcode (EPC) in the RFID label. This will predominantly be used in the stores for incidental encoding labels.

    2. Print
‘Scan Print’ also works with a barcode reader, but instead of encoding plain labels with a handheld- a RFID label printer will print and encode the label at the same time. This process can happen in the Distribution Center, or in the store when larger volume is to be printed.

    3. Pre-printed labels
When moving to a larger scale implementation, the RFID labels need to be applied either at manufacturing, or in the Distribution Center. The best solution is to use pre-printed RFID labels or tags, based on the quantities ordered at the garment manufacturer. We have partnered with companies that have a large network of local print shops and deliver excellent quality around the globe.

    References

Around 70% of our retail revenue is generated from replenished items. Therefore, having a high accuracy on inventory data is crucial to ensure product availability. It is not enough to know that the products are in the store. We have to be sure they are on the shelf as well – RFID provides the necessary foundation to give the store employees the tools to achieve this.

Hans Petter Hübert. Retail Director at Moods of Norway

Fashion retailer River Island uses !D Cloud to raise the stock accuracy, which also paves the way for omnichannel services like ship-from-store or Buy Online Pickup In Store.

Norwegian fashion brand Moods of Norway optimizes the in-store stock accuracy in the brand stores to over 98% using !D Cloud, driving in-store and webshop sales.

Best Accounting Software for Small Business 2017: QuickBooks vs Xero vs Wave

In this guide, we compare the top providers of small business accounting software: QuickBooks Online, Xero, and Wave. QuickBooks and Xero were selected because they both offer features that go beyond the basics, such as inventory management and budgeting. Wave stood out because it is a free option packed with great features. Read on for a detailed comparison.

Best Accounting Software for Small Business Owners: QuickBooks Online

We recommend QuickBooks Online because of the number of features that you get for the price, how easy it is to use, and the availability of free live support via phone or chat so that you can get help when you need it. It’s also the system that we use and love at Fit Small Business. Click here to receive up to 50% off Quickbooks Online.

Best Small Business Bookkeeping Software Summary Table

QuickBooks Online: Best Accounting Software for Small Business Owners

Freshbooks - cloud accounting for small business owners

There are four primary reasons why we chose QuickBooks Online as the best small business accounting software:

    1. QuickBooks ecosystem

Accounting software is different from other types of software because you’ll be giving other users, such as your accountant or bookkeeper, access to your information. It’s important for these people to be familiar with the system you’re using, and that’s almost guaranteed with QuickBooks. It’s the most commonly used accounting system with over 1 million customers and is regarded as the ‘go to’ accounting software. This is the primary reason we recommend QuickBooks, despite the potentially higher price tag.

There are over 20,000 accountants and bookkeepers who are certified in QuickBooks and a large network of ProAdvisors (myself included) all across the country. Be sure to check out how to find a QuickBooks Proadvisor for tips on how to locate and hire a QuickBooks Pro.

    2. It’s easy to use

While all 3 systems are easy to use, QuickBooks is especially ideal for business owners who don’t have an accounting background. The QuickBooks user interface consists of completing forms to bill your customers and to pay bills or write checks. Once you understand how to complete the forms, QuickBooks does the accounting behind the scenes for you. To expand your bookkeeping knowledge, check out our Small Business Bookkeeping Accounting Guide.

    3. QuickBooks will grow and expand with your business

It has advanced features like inventory tracking and the ability to create budgets. In addition, you can easily add on payroll once you hire your first employee, and sign up for an Intuit Merchant Services account when you are ready to accept credit card payments from your customers. These services come with an additional cost, but the good news is that you can add them with just a click of a button and there is no need to upgrade to a new version.

    4. Create financial statements in minutes

QuickBooks comes with 40 + reports that you can run in minutes. This includes a Profit and Loss Statement, Balance Sheet Report and Statement of Cash Flows, which provide you with a complete picture of how well your business is doing. Xero offers similar reporting capabilities. While you can run a Profit and Loss Statement and a Balance Sheet Report in Wave, you cannot prepare a Statement of Cash Flows.

If there is a downside to QuickBooks, it’s that the quality of the support can be inconsistent. As a QuickBooks ProAdvisor, I have had a lot of experience with calling or using chat support while at a client’s office. My experience using the chat support channel has been much more successful than when I call the support line.

Xero: Best Accounting Software for Free Payroll Processing

Freshbooks - cloud accounting for small business owners

Xero is not as well known as QuickBooks and is sort of the “new kid on the block,” but it is quickly making a name for itself with over 1 million small business subscribers. Xero has over 16,000 certified advisors (myself included) who can help you get up and running. You can find a Xero certified advisor by entering your city, state and zip on the website.

In my opinion, the look and feel of the Xero interface is very similar to QuickBooks Online, so it is perfect for existing QuickBooks users that are thinking about making a change. Similar to QuickBooks, we have created a free Xero Course with video tutorials that show you how to set up your business.

Xero includes payroll processing for up to 5 employees in their product offerings (up to 10 in premium edition). The benefit of course is that when your business grows to where you need to hire employees, there is no need to upgrade or any additional costs to pay. With QuickBooks, you need to pay an extra cost if you want payroll functionality.

Unlike QuickBooks, Xero allows an unlimited number of users to access the program at no additional charge. This is great if you have several people like your tax professional, CPA, and employees that need access to your data. Similar to QuickBooks, you can set each person up with their own user id and password and give them access to just the areas of Xero that they need.

The downside to Xero is their customer support. Free email support is included in all plans but if you would like to talk to someone, then you have to include a request for a telephone call in your email. The response time for emails is generally 3-4 hours.

Lastly, although Xero is quickly catching up to QuickBooks, they still don’t have the same number of local experts/certified advisors. So if you’re thinking of choosing Xero, make sure your accountant or bookkeeper is onboard.

    Wave: Best Free Accounting Software

Freshbooks - cloud accounting for small business owners

Heard of Wave before? Neither had I before I started doing some research for this guide. With a price tag of FREE, I must say that I didn’t expect much. But, I was pleasantly surprised at the long list of features this accounting software has to offer for absolutely free. There are limitations on what you can do with Wave, but for a free online accounting software, the functionality is quite extensive.

Wave was designed for contractors, freelancers, and businesses with 9 or fewer employees. They have over 2500 Pros who support small businesses that use Wave. This is significantly less than the 20,000 QuickBooks Pros and the 16,000 Xero Pros out there so it might be more challenging to find a local expert. However, the program is pretty easy to use and they have some great training resources that we will explore later on in this guide.

Wave is able to handle the day to day business basics like invoicing customers, importing credit card and debit card transactions, and running financial statements like profit and loss and balance sheet reports. However, you cannot run a statement of cash flows in Wave. Also, it is limited when it comes to paying bills. You can enter your bills and manage their due dates in Wave, but you cannot actually write a check in Wave. Therefore, you will have to manually write checks to pay your bills and then go into Wave and manually mark your bills as paid. Since this process is manual, your accounts payable account will not be up-to-date until you have manually marked the bills as paid.

There’s also another catch: you will see display ads on the right side of the screen. But to be honest, after working in the program for an hour, I forgot they were there.

QuickBooks vs. Xero vs. Wave: In-Depth Review

    Pricing

The three companies we compare in this guide range the gamut in terms of price. Wave is free, and Xero and QuickBooks are $30 and $50/month respectively. Here’s a summary of pricing and what you get with our recommended edition and the premium edition of each product.

    What is Cloud Backup? Webopedia Definition #cloud #backup, #cloud #backup #definition, #cloud

    #

    cloud backup

Cloud backup, or cloud computer backup . refers to backing up data to a remote, cloud-based server. As a form of cloud storage. cloud backup data is stored in and accessible from multiple distributed and connected resources that comprise a cloud (see “cloud computing “ ).

    Cloud Backup Solutions

Cloud backup solutions enable enterprises or individuals to store their data and computer files on the Internet using a storage service provider. rather than storing the data locally on a physical disk, such as a hard drive or tape backup.

Cloud backup providers enable customers to remotely access the provider’s services using a secure client log in application to back up files from the customer s computers or data center to the online storage server using an encrypted connection.

How to Restore a Cloud Backup

To update or restore a cloud backup, customers need to use the service provider’s specific client application or a Web browser interface. Files and data can be automatically saved to the cloud backup service on a regular, scheduled basis, or the information can be automatically backed up anytime changes are made (also known as a “cloud sync”).

    Enterprise Cloud Backup

For enterprises, enterprise-grade cloud backup solutions are available that typically add essential features such as archiving and disaster recovery. Archiving features help to satisfy an enterprise s legal requirements for data retention, and as part of a company’s disaster recovery plan. the remote, off-site storage provided by cloud backup helps ensure the data remains safe should the enterprise s local data be jeopardized by a disaster such as a fire, flood, hacker attack or employee theft.

Hell or High Water – NRK Filmpolitiet – alt om film, spill

    #

    Hell or High Water

    Birger Vestmo

Uttrykket Hell or High Water betyr å gjennomføre noe, hva som enn skjer.

    (Anmeldelsen fortsetter under bildet)

    (Anmeldelsen fortsetter under bildet)

    Manusforfatteren imponerer

    (Anmeldelsen fortsetter under bildet)

Managed dns services – load balance, failover, geoip, geodns, gslb, geolocation #managed

    #

Sites built on cloud services such as Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure can now automatically and transparently redirect user traffic from their bare domain name to the www version of their sites. Simply add a http redirection record in the edgedirector control panel and all further record maintenance is automatic. The edgedirector http redirection service is geodns enabled and hosted on multiple distributed redundant edgedirector servers

Affiliate marketers and traffic aggregators can use chained redirects crossing domains as a means of referral masking to protect the source of their user traffic.

dns services for geo-targetted global load balancing
dns services for automatic distributed failover

server health is constantly monitored in parallel from multiple data centers, when a server fails or the server requests a pause, the dns records are dynamically altered to point to other balanced servers or hot spare standby servers

dns records are dynamically selected to respond to queries with the server address configured for the geographic location as determined by the address of the incoming query

global load balancing, failover and hot spare features can be combined to achieve the best result possible for high availability and lowest network latency

global load balancing can be configured on CNAME records for third party cloud and cdn traffic management

DNS is a core internet protocol that enables your web presence by translating human readable domain names to network routable addresses. DNS availability is critical to delivering your audience to your site on demand around the clock.

Our managed authoritative dns hosting services deliver the DNS uptime and availability that are crucial to your success.

The edgedirector.com authoritative dns server platform is scalable, flexible, and responsive. It delivers accurate dns responses quickly and propagates dns zone record changes immediately to all dns servers. No more waiting for dns updates. It is authoritative dns service at its best.

The service is further enhanced with an advanced dns feature set to help you stay at the front of the internet pack.

    automated maintenance failover
When your servers are unavailable, your visitors are pointed to a information page hosted on edgedirector.com servers. The pointing mechanism is specially designed to inform and reassure human users while also avoiding search engine penalties. Even if all of your servers in every data center are unavailable, your users will still receive some reassurance that you will be back.

    wildcard dns record support
Users can be directed to a default server when the hostname does not exist in your dns zone. No more lost users from typing errors like ww .example.com.

    global dns load balancing
Use dynamic geoip mapped dns records to point your users to the closest healthy server to improve server response latency. Turn your existing servers into a custom content delivery network with an international footprint.

    geoip content delivery mapping
A content delivery network can also be geolocation aware. Dynamic dns answers are used to point your users at the geolocation designated server for their geographic place of origin. You can easily deliver geotargeted content from single or multiple content distribution servers.

    monitored server failover
edgedirector.com monitors your servers and tailors dns answers automatically to include only servers that are currently available in the defined set. Designated subscriber administrators are automatically notified of outages for corrective action. Once the server is back online, it will again be included in the server pool.

    hardware load balancing compatible
You may designate any ip address as the published endpoint in your dns records. This includes the public interfaces of single or redundant hardware load balancers and caching appliances in your data center. Combine global load balancing with local load balancing for the best server response time and greatest resilience to service interruptions.

These advanced dns based capabilities work together to provide your users with the best service possible. A set of globally distributed geolocation aware servers becomes as easy to manage as a single server and as powerful as any CDN. Imagine a no-compromise CDN custom built for your unique requirements with complete control in your hands.

    What we do?

The Workload Lifecycle Management TM for Cloud (WLMc) is performed in three distinct phases of Plan time, Deploy time, and Run Time. Our clients can choose to engage the WLMc with us for just one phase, two phases or all three phases. However to get the most benefit out of our solutions all three phases are recommended

As a new workload. department, division or company is added we always come back to the beginning with Plan time, the follow the path we know will optimize your workload environment by using and buying cloud workload resource better.

Also our engagements are fully collaborative with our clients for each phase of our Workload Lifecycle Management TM for cloud. We provide actionable decisions and recommendations. However, to get the most benefit out of our solutions we recommend doing all three phases.

JanusIQ platform for AWS environments provides a picture and score of how well your organization is leveraging all that AWS has to offer against your application code and workload contexts with respect to the business goals. The breakthrough value proposition is that our service can execute the findings to maximize your score whether your workloads make sense to stay on AWS or move to a viable alternate computing resource pool – continuously.

Our Google cloud assessment practice looks at the special Google architecture, and provides recommendations around optimizing the environments based on known challenges that other organizations face when using Google Compute Engine.

Our Microsoft Azure assessment practice provides the best way to buy and use MS Azure. There is a lack of clarity on how to properly use Azure based on the ever growing service offerings. We bring that Clarity and best practices that organizations are looking for.

    What are microservices?

Microservices – also known as the microservice architecture – is an architectural style that structures an application as a collection of loosely coupled services, which implement business capabilities. The microservice architecture enables the continuous delivery/deployment of large, complex applications. It also enables an organization to evolve its technology stack.

Microservices are not a silver bullet

The microservice architecture is not a silver bullet. It has several drawbacks. Moreover, when using this architecture there are numerous issues that you must address. The microservice architecture pattern language is a collection of patterns for applying the microservice architecture. It has two goals:

    1. The pattern language enables you to decide whether microservices are a good fit for your application.
    2. The pattern language enables you to use the microservice architecture successfully.

    Where to start?

A good starting point is the Monolithic Architecture pattern. which is the traditional architectural style that is still a good choice for many applications. It does, however, have numerous limitations and issues and so a better choice for large/complex applications is the Microservice architecture pattern .

ISO/IEC 27017:2015 / ITU-T X.1631 Information technology Security techniques Code of practice for information security controls based on ISO/IEC 27002 for cloud services

    Introduction

This standard provides guidance on the information security aspects of cloud computing, recommending and assisting with the implementation of cloud-specific information security controls supplementing the guidance in ISO/IEC 27002 and other ISO27k standards.

    Scope and purpose

The code of practice provides additional information security controls implementation advice beyond that provided in ISO/IEC 27002. in the cloud computing context.

The standard advises both cloud service customers and cloud service providers, with the primary guidance laid out side-by-side in each section. For instance, section 6.1.1 on information security roles and responsibilities says, in addition to section 6.1.1 of ISO/IEC 27002:2013:

    Cloud service customer

    Cloud service provider

The cloud service customer should agree with the cloud service provider on an appropriate allocation of information security roles and responsibilities, and confirm that it can fulfil its allocated roles and responsibilities. The information security roles and responsibilities of both parties should be stated in an agreement. The cloud service customer should identify and manage its relationship with the customer support and care function of the cloud service provider.

The cloud service provider should agree and document an appropriate allocation of information security roles and responsibilities with its cloud service customers, its cloud service providers, and its suppliers.

    Other information for cloud computing

Even when responsibilities are determined within and between the parties, the cloud service customer is accountable for the decision to use the service. That decision should be made according to the roles and responsibilities determined within the cloud service customer s organization. The cloud service provider is accountable for the information security stated as part of the cloud service agreement. The information security implementation and provisioning. [read the standard for the full text!]

    Normative standards

The standard cites ISO/IEC 27000 and 27002. of course, plus ISO/IEC 17788 (Cloud computing – Overview and vocabulary) and ISO/IEC 17789 (Cloud computing – Reference architecture). Curiously, although ISO/IEC 27001 is noted in the bibliography, it is not considered normative i.e. essential reading: it is possible to implement ISO/IEC 27002 with or without an ISMS.

    Status of the standard

The standard was developed jointly by ISO/IEC and ITU and hence is dual-numbered as both ISO/IEC 27017 and ITU-T X.1631 with identical content.

The standard was published at the end of 2015.

    Personal comments

The standards project had widespread support from ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 27, ITU-T Q8/SG17, national standards bodies plus the Cloud Security Alliance among others.

As an ambitious first edition of about 40 pages, it may not be brilliant but it is a useful starting point in this rapidly-developing field.

This standard closes a gap in ISO/IEC 27002 section 15 which somehow contrived to cover the information security aspects of supplier relationships without actually mentioning cloud !

As a sector-specific standard, it falls within the remit of ISO/IEC 27009.

SC 27 decided not to progress a separate cloud information security management system specification standard, judging that ISO/IEC 27001 is sufficient. Therefore, there are no plans to certify the security of cloud service providers specifically. They can however be certified compliant with ISO/IEC 27001, like any other organization.

SC 27 s development of dedicated cloud privacy and cloud service supplier management standards in parallel implies that this standard should have excluded both aspects, referring to those standards instead. which indeed happened for privacy but not for relationship management. Odd that.

    Steps to take before implementing a cloud-based HCM system #cloud #based #erp

Steps to take before implementing a cloud-based HCM system

Having a cloud-based human capital management (HCM ) system is very appealing; moving to the cloud offers the opportunity for transformation, simplification and efficiencies that provide a wealth of value. But before you make the move, you need to evaluate your current human resources (HR) processes and applications and envision how they might need to look in the future.

    Download this free guide

Buying HR Tools: The 4 Phases of Assessing Your Needs

Whether your goal is to replace your entire HR system because it has become obsolete or there’s a desire to consolidate all HR apps under a single vendor, tap this guide to help you determine your company’s specific software wants and wishes.

By submitting your personal information, you agree that TechTarget and its partners may contact you regarding relevant content, products and special offers.

You also agree that your personal information may be transferred and processed in the United States, and that you have read and agree to the Terms of Use and the Privacy Policy .

Ask yourself: What is your vision for HR? How should your organization’s HR technology landscape look in the future? When you have a clearly defined vision for how you want to run HR in your organization. it is much easier to plan how to achieve that vision. Although technology plays a major role in operational excellence, having a defined HR strategy sets the foundation for understanding how to implement that strategy and how technology can support it.

Determine what processes and applications are causing headaches

Before moving your HCM system to the cloud, understand what processes or applications are causing headaches. What keeps you and your HR team up at night? What processes are bogged down with cumbersome, manual, paper-based requests? What technology is proving to be inefficient or is unable to meet the needs of users? By understanding the problems HR administrators, managers and other employees involved in HR-led business processes face. you can begin to build a roadmap to overcome these challenges and move toward the HR vision you have for a top-notch organization.

Some organizations might have a problem with recruiting and retention. while others might have a problem identifying and managing potential leaders. Other problems could include the usability of the software, how complex or burdensome the performance management process is, or mobility. Some organizations want to move away from legacy HR technology and move to something modern and more usable and that has enhanced functionality.

Build a list of the problems and rank them by priority. That will help identify critical problems that have to be fixed first and problems that could be addressed later.

Build a roadmap based on your HR vision

Once you know your HR vision and understand your challenges, build a roadmap for achieving your vision. Typically, a roadmap can be for any period from two to five years or beyond. Building a roadmap by process area or technology area over a period of time helps determine the plan of action to resolve the challenges you face. For example, if your major challenges center on recruiting and onboarding employees, then these are obvious areas to focus on first. A roadmap should line up which processes you will tackle and in which order you will focus on each of them.

Deciding to get some quick wins early on in the initiative will influence how you start your roadmap. Solving two or three small but frustrating business problems at the beginning of the initiative is a great way to drive value to the organization early on. This also helps the change management process; employees who are involved in these processes begin to experience positive changes early into the initiative’s lifecycle.

Once you’ve done your due diligence and have selected a vendor, it’s time to do it again — but this time for an HCM system implementation partner.

Technology’s role in implementing a cloud-based HCM system will influence greatly how your roadmap develops. Is it best to get the foundation in first and go for a core HR system? If I decide to implement a recruiting solution, should I also implement an onboarding solution to enhance the overall recruiting experience for my recruiters and my managers? If I want to put in a new career development plan system for employees, should I also implement a learning management system that can integrate with the career development plan? How will all of this fit in with my goals management process and therefore influence my performance management process?

Integration can play an important role in building out the roadmap. Understanding how the pieces fit together helps in understanding where value can be added. Having a recruiting system that doesn’t integrate with your onboarding or core HR software can be a major challenge. On the other end of the scale, the task of having to build a few complex integrations that will last only for a short period of time (e.g. six or nine months) might influence the order of migrating processes or applications to the cloud.

    Execute on your roadmap

Once you have prepared a roadmap, execute on that roadmap. Probably at some point during the aforementioned processes you may have looked at some software. If you have not, or at this point haven’t decided on a vendor, then now is the time to evaluate vendors based on your needs and your roadmap. Different vendors have different benefits. Loosely coupled applications might make the transition smoother, or if you prefer a big bang approach then some vendors may have more strength than others.

Once you’ve done your due diligence and have selected a vendor, it’s time to do it again — but this time for an HCM system implementation partner. Finding the right implementation partner is similar to finding the right HR technology: You need to find someone who can solve your problems, who you can work with, and who has experience working with other customers. An episode of Firing Line with Bill Kutik can help you understand some of the tips and tricks needed when you look for partners.

Change management is a large part of any enterprise software implementation, and making changes to HR processes and technology requires a solid change management plan to back it up. Developing your change management strategy before you commence on your initiative and then realigning it with your initiative on an ongoing basis will greatly improve acceptance of your new processes and systems.

Once all the pieces are in place it is time to deliver on that strategy. Implementing new processes and technology is never easy, but with the right vision, strategy, plan, technology and partner you can make it a more than worthwhile exercise for improving your business.

iPad iCloud: How to Backup and Restore

If you chose to have your iPad backed up to the iCloud when setting the iPad up for the first time. you should already have regular backups stored on the iCloud. However, if you chose to skip that step, it is rather easy to set up the iPad to automatically back itself up to iCloud. (And if you are unsure, just follow these steps and you will confirm you have it set up correctly.)

First, go into the iPad settings. The settings for backing up your iPad are located under iCloud in the left-side menu. New to the iPad? Here is some help on how to get into the iPad s settings .

The iCloud settings will let you choose what you want to back up, including contacts, calendar events, bookmarks in the Safari browser and text saved within the notes application. By default, most of these will be on.

Once you have these settings the way you want them, tap Backup to set up the automatic backup. On this screen, you can turn iCloud Backup on or off by tapping the slider button. When on, the iPad will back itself up when it is plugged into a wall outlet or to a computer.

Last, perform your first backup. Just below the iCloud Backup slider button is a Back Up Now option. Tapping this button will perform an immediate backup, making sure you have at least one data point you can restore from later.

Continue to 2 of 2 below.

    Image © Apple, Inc.

The process for restoring an iPad from an iCloud backup begins by wiping the iPad, which puts it into the same clean state it was when you first got it out of the box. But before you take this step, it is a good idea to make sure your iPad is being backed up to the iCloud. (Obviously, this won t be possible in certain circumstances, such as restoring a brand new iPad with your old iPad s data and settings.)

You can verify your iCloud backup by going into the iPad s settings and choosing iCloud from the left-side menu. In the iCloud settings, choose Storage and Backup. This will take you to a screen that will display the last time the iPad was backed up to iCloud.

Once you verify the backup, you are ready to begin the process. You will start by erasing all data and settings from the iPad, which puts it into a clean state. You can do this by going to the iPad settings and choosing General from the left-side menu. Scroll all the way down the General settings until you see Reset . From this menu, choose Erase All Content and Settings .

Once the iPad finishes erasing the data, you will be taken to the same screen you were at when you first got your iPad. As you set up the iPad. you will be given the choice to restore the iPad from a backup. This option appears after you have signed into your Wi-Fi network and chosen whether or not to use location services.

When you choose to restore from a backup, you will be taken to a screen where you can choose from your last backup or other backups, which is usually your last three or four backups.

Note: If you are restoring from a backup because you have run into problems with your iPad that can only be solved by restoring it, you can first choose your latest backup. If you still have problems, you can move on to the next latest backup, repeating the process until (hopefully) the problem is cleared.

Restoring from a backup can take some time. The process uses your Wi-Fi connection to download settings, content, and data. If you had a lot of content on your iPad, this can take a while. The restore screen should give you estimates at each stage of the restore process, starting with restoring the settings and then booting into the iPad. When the iPad home screen appears, the iPad will continue the restore process by downloading all of your applications.

If you do run into a problem with this stage, you can always download an application again from the app store for free. You can also sync apps from iTunes on your PC. But the iPad should be able to restore all of your applications on its own. Remember, if you have a lot of apps, it could take some time for the iPad to complete this step. In addition to downloading apps, the process restores photos and other data, so if it doesn t look like there is progress, the iPad could be working on downloading more than just apps.

    FrostWire – Cloud Downloader, BitTorrent Client, Media Player #cloud #search, #file #search,

    #

To download files and torrents with privacy, security, and anonymity, we highly recommend that you use a VPN with FrostWire.

We tested out many VPN providers, and our top recommendation is ExpressVPN.

How do I use ExpressVPN with FrostWire?

ExpressVPN is quick to set up and simple to use. If you can use FrostWire, you can use ExpressVPN. Here’s how:

    • 1. Sign up for an ExpressVPN account.
    • 2. Use ExpressVPN’s Speed Test and connect to the server location with the fastest speeds.
    • 3. Use FrostWire with privacy, security, and peace of mind!

Why is ExpressVPN the best VPN for downloading?

ExpressVPN protects your privacy and anonymity:

    • VPN kill switch. ExpressVPN’s kill switch stops Internet traffic from entering and leaving your Windows or Mac computer if you’re disconnected from the VPN.
    • Zero logs. ExpressVPN has a strict no-logging policy.
    • Pay with Bitcoin. ExpressVPN accepts PayPal, Bitcoin, credit cards, and many other payment methods.
    • Apps for all devices. ExpressVPN has apps for Windows, Mac, Android, Linux, iOS, and routers.

ExpressVPN gives you blazing-fast download speeds, unlimited bandwidth, and unrestricted access:

    • Speed test. ExpressVPN’s Speed Test helps you identify the optimal VPN server location for the best download speeds.
    • Massive network of VPN servers. ExpressVPN has thousands of servers in 87 countries.
    • Unlimited bandwidth. ExpressVPN does not restrict bandwidth so you can download as much as you want.
    • Bypass filters and firewalls. ExpressVPN helps you punch through firewalls so you can download anything, no matter where you are.

ExpressVPN wants to keep customers (like us!) happy:

    • 24/7 Live Chat Support. ExpressVPN’s friendly support staff is there around the clock to help you with any of your problems. (Even at 4:00 a.m.!)
    • 30-day money-back guarantee. If you are not happy with ExpressVPN, they’ll give you a full refund, no questions asked.

Why do I need a VPN when I download files?

A VPN (virtual private network) helps you go online with privacy, anonymity, security, and freedom by creating an encrypted tunnel between your computer or device and the Internet.

A VPN proxies you Internet traffic so you can disguise you IP address and location, bypass content filters and firewalls, and hide your Internet traffic from your ISP, government, and anyone else trying to snoop on what you’re doing.

What happens if I download files without a VPN?

If you don’t use a VPN when you download files.

    • The websites you visit can uniquely identify you using your IP address and location information.
    • Your ISP and government can monitor what websites and services you’re using online.

If you’re concerned about your privacy and anonymity when you download files, get a VPN.

The rush for virtualization is difficult for security sensitive environments. SEC579 helps demonstrate which risks are valid.

    Paul Mayers, Lloyds Banking Group

One of today’s most rapidly evolving and widely deployed technologies is server virtualization. SEC579: Virtualization and Software-Defined Security is intended to help security, IT operations, and audit and compliance professionals build, defend, and properly assess both virtual and converged infrastructures, as well as understand software-defined networking and infrastructure security risks.

Many organizations are already realizing cost savings from implementing virtualized servers, and systems administrators love the ease of deployment and management of virtualized systems. More and more organizations are deploying desktop, application, and network virtualization as well. There are even security benefits of virtualization: easier business continuity and disaster recovery, single points of control over multiple systems, role-based access, and additional auditing and logging capabilities for large infrastructure.

With these benefits comes a dark side, however. Virtualization technology is the focus of many new potential threats and exploits, and it presents new vulnerabilities that must be managed. There are also a vast number of configuration options that security and system administrators need to understand, with an added layer of complexity that has to be managed by operations teams. Virtualization technologies also connect to network infrastructure and storage networks, and require careful planning with regard to access controls, user permissions, and traditional security controls.

In addition, many organizations are evolving virtualized infrastructure into private clouds using converged infrastructure that employs software-defined tools and programmable stack layers to control large, complex data centers. Security architecture, policies, and processes will need to be adapted to work within a converged infrastructure, and there are many changes that security and operations teams will need to accommodate to ensure that assets are protected.

This course will cover core operational functions like secure network design and segmentation, building secure systems, and secure virtualization implementation and controls. Cutting-edge topics like software-defined networking and container technology will also be covered in detail with an emphasis on security techniques and controls. Security-focused virtualization, integration, and monitoring will be covered at length. Attacks and threats to virtual environments will be discussed, and students will learn how to perform vulnerability assessments and penetration tests in their virtual environments. We’ll also look at how to implement network intrusion detection and access controls, implement log and event management, and perform forensics and incident handling in virtual and converged data centers. Finally, students will learn how to perform technical audits and assessments of their in-house and public cloud environments, creating reports and documenting technical controls. This instruction will heavily emphasize automation and scripting techniques.

Will new accounting rule slow adoption of cloud computing?

The Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) changed a rule in December that will make it harder to capitalize the cost of cloud set-up and implementation expenses, a change that may encourage some enterprises to opt instead for traditional on-premise software.

The FASB Accounting Standards Update to “Intangibles – Goodwill and Other – Internal-use Software (Subtopic 350-40)” addresses “Customer’s accounting for fees paid in a cloud computing arrangement .” And while the update didn’t set out to address how to account for cloud migration costs, the new rules, combined with the FASB’s decision “not to provide additional guidance on the accounting for upfront costs,” will mean enterprise shops can no longer depreciate some fees involved in a cloud migration.

Hugo Vasquez, Deputy CIO and VP of Technology and Services for AES, a Fortune 200 global power company, said prior to the change his company was able to capitalize the cost of a cloud migration project and write off that investment over three years. “Now with the new rules, the project itself cannot be capitalized,” Vasquez says.

How big a deal is that? Vasquez says AES last year migrated to Workday’s cloud-based human resources tool. “We were able to capitalize around $4.46 million to implement the project, which went live at the beginning of this month. Our integrator was Deloitte, and we capitalized those costs and the labor of our own people, so we had an incentive to move forward with a cloud solution. But today I couldn’t capitalize that $4.46 million. And that change is resulting in a reduction in projects in our company to move to a cloud computing model.”

Google, one of many companies that commented on the suggested change before it went into effect Dec. 15, agreed that the shift will dampen interest in cloud computing services. In a comment letter to the FASB submitted by Google, Director of Finance Amie Thuener wrote. “We believe that the Proposed Standard could result in a disincentive to purchase hosted cloud computing arrangements if companies interpret the wording … to mean that implementation costs should be expensed as incurred” (versus capitalized and depreciated).

A host of other large companies, from Visa to Salesforce to Groupon, also weighed in on different aspects of the rule change, collectively suggesting, at the least, that more work needs to be done on this specific issue, say nothing of the larger question about how to account for cloud services going forward.

    The intent of the change

The FASB Accounting Standards Update in question set out to clarify the rules because “existing GAAP (generally accepted accounting principals) does not include explicit guidance about a customer’s accounting fees paid in a cloud computing arrangement.” (FASB sets the accounting rules for public companies that the Securities and Exchange Committee enforces.)

In essence the Update concludes that, if a cloud computing arrangement includes a software license, then the customer should “account for the software license element of the arrangement consistent with the acquisition of other software licenses.” Regarding the latter, a company with, say, a $30 million license for an on-premise Oracle product, may capitalize that as an asset and depreciate $10 million per year over three years, recognizing that as an expense on their income statement.

The Update continues: “If a cloud computing arrangement does not include a software license, the customer should account for the arrangement as a service contract.”

One of the perceived advantages of cloud computing is the ability to shift from capital-intensive infrastructure/software investments to a service subscription model paid out of the operating budget, so in and of itself this guidance isn’t too surprising. But the Update goes on to say:

“Some stakeholders wanted the scope of this Update to be expanded to address a customer’s accounting for implementation, set up, and other upfront costs that often are incurred by customers entering into cloud computing arrangements. The activities that entities perform in conjunction with entering into a cloud computing arrangement include training, creating or installing an interface, reconfiguring existing systems, and capturing and reformatting data. The board observed that to the extent a cloud computing arrangement transfers a software license, Subtopic 350-40 provides guidance on how to account for costs such as those resulting from training, data capture, and conversion activities.

“In deciding not to provide additional guidance on the accounting for upfront costs incurred by customers entering into cloud computing arrangements that do not transfer a software license to a customer, the Board noted that initial costs incurred in service arrangements are not unique to cloud computing arrangements. Consequently, the scope of that issue is much broader than the scope of this Update. The Board decided that the scope of this Update should not be expanded to address the range of implementation and setup costs incurred by a customer in a cloud computing arrangement.”

There is, however, disagreement in the comment letters about whether a license is the proper litmus test for cloud service accounting. In HP’s comment letter, Senior Vice President, Controller and Principal Accounting Officer Jeff Ricci writes. “as a vendor, HP generally believes its customer is paying for a hosted service, not the acquisition of software or a software license.”

And if no license is involved, the new rules mean companies can no longer capitalize upfront cloud project costs.

Google urges the FASB to delve deeper on this core issue: “We encourage the FASB to consider issuing explicit guidance with respect to the accounting treatment of implementation costs, as these costs can be significant,” Thuener wrote. “We believe capitalizing the software implementation costs and amortizing the corresponding asset over its useful life better reflects the economics of the transaction as expenses are recorded in a manner that reflects the consumption of the economic benefit from the software implementation costs, and therefore is more helpful to readers of financial statements in the analysis of assets and expenses.”

Even companies that agree with using the license model to figure out how to account for cloud services want the FASB to clarify its position on upfront costs given that the “costs can be substantial.” James Hoffmesiter, Corporate Controller for Visa, writes. “While we are supportive of the FASB’s proposal for how to evaluate the arrangement to determine if it is a software license or a service contract, we respectfully request that the FASB consider expanding the proposed standard to include guidance on the accounting for one-time set-up fees incurred by a customer under a cloud computing arrangement.”

Visa goes on to add another wrinkle to the upfront cost discussion. Instead of capitalizing those costs, Visa argues that the “set-up/integration costs should be considered part of the total service cost and recognized over the term of the service agreement,” because the set-up costs “provide a future benefit to the customer in the form of continuous connectivity to the service provider.”

    Bigger question going forward

The FASB more or less admitted there is more work to be done when it determined the “scope of this Update should not be expanded to address the range of implementation and setup costs incurred by a customer,” but some of the companies that commented on the update are pushing for a more fundamental review of cloud computing accounting, and more specifically, the role of licenses in that accounting.

Joseph Allanson, Chief Accounting Officer at Salesforce.com, wrote. “We do not agree with the Board’s proposal that a cloud computing arrangement should be accounted for as a service contract if the arrangement does not include a software license. We believe that the delivery mechanism, or the customer’s ability to take possession of the software, should not determine whether a software element is present in a cloud computing arrangement as the functionality of the underlying software is the same regardless of whether the software is delivered via the cloud or on-premise software license. We encourage the board to develop an accounting framework that is based on the economics rather than the form of the software arrangements.”

Groupon’s Chief Accounting Officer Brian Stevens also called for a broader review. “We believe that accounting guidance resulting in a more consistent presentation of software costs, regardless of whether the purchaser elects to maintain the underlying software on its own servers in an on-premise arrangement or contracts to have it maintained on a third party’s servers in a cloud computing arrangement, would reduce complexity for users of financial statements by increasing comparability between economically similar transactions.”

And in a comment letter filed with the FASB, Jay Buth, Vice President, Controller and Chief Accounting Officer with Northeast Utilities System, argues that “both [software] licenses and cloud rights represent intangible assets, and we believe that … these two economically similar types of arrangements should be given similar accounting treatment. We do not believe an entity’s lack of ownership, title or license to software should preclude capitalization.”

Vasquez of AES hopes the FASB reviews the decision soon because it is “affecting our costs and our projects, which is affecting our people, our morale.”

    #

    Flywire Desktop

Flywire s hosted cloud service gives you access to your applications and data anywhere, any time. Flywire works on desktops, labtops, and mobile devices. Choose how you want to work on the fly.

    Data Backup and Recovery

We provide secure, offsite backups. We’ve got years of experience providing reliable backup services. When disaster strikes, trust Flywire to get you back up and running quickly.

    Our Mission

Technology is the nerve center of any business, and entrusting it to someone else can be difficult: after all, reputation and customer confidence are built and rebuilt again every single day. We understand these challenges. It’s why we go above and beyond to protect and maintain your data—so you can focus on your clients and profits, not your technology.

Flywire s solutions allow access to your data and systems anytime, anywhere for a low, fixed monthly rate. You’ll enjoy our personal service, whether you call our U.S.-based help desk or meet and build a relationship with our staff. With deep roots in the services sector and an emphasis on the legal and accounting professions, we know what it takes to succeed, and we work hard to make sure you have what you need, when you need it.

    Why Should I Use Flywire?

    Flexability.

Flywire s cloud based services are ideal for businesses with fluctuating needs. Scaling up while you grow is just as simple as scaling down as your business needs change. This level of operational agility can give you the edge you need over competitors.

    Disaster Recovery.

Flywire helps bridge the technology gap for smaller and medium sized businesses. Data back up and recovery is included with all Flywire Solutions. You can be sure that your company data is safe and secure. When disaster strikes you can rely on us to help you pick up exactly where you left off.

No Need For Internal IT Support.

Flywire s servers are run off site in our data center, out of sight and out of your hair. This means we handle all of the updates, upgrades, installations, and end user support for you. You no longer have to hire IT to keep your servers up-to-date nor will you have to spend time maintaining the system yourself.

    Capital-expenditure Free.

Flywire eliminates the high costs of hardware acquisition. Our subscription-based models allows you to simply pay as you go while we take care of the hardware needs. This ease of set up and management let s you remain focused on your profits rather than worrying about your costs.

    Collaboration Has Never Been Easier.

Flywire provides you and your team the ability to access, edit, and share documents anytime from anywhere. You will be able to do more together, and do it better. Real time data allows for the highest level of collaborative visibility.

Work From Anywhere. Work On The Fly.

Flywire s services run from any internet connected device. You can work from your desktop computer and pick up on your smart phone or tablet exactly where you left off if you choose to leave the office. Flywire gives you the flexibility to work remotely. For some clients, our services allow for the elimination of a physical office altogether. Flywire lets you enjoy the work-life balance of your choosing without losing productivity.

    Document Control

As your business grows the importance of document control increases. Before the cloud this was done through the exchange of physical media devices or unsecured email exchanges. Sooner or later this old fashioned method leads to conflicting file types, content, formats, and templates.

Flywire eliminates this threat through maintained document control. All files are stored centrally on our servers. Every employee sees one version of the true file. We can even adjust access to certain files for specific employees. You can customize exactly who has access to sensitive data. Edits and modifications are saved instantly and those changes are reflected for every user.

    Security

Prior to cloud computing all of your data and applications were stored within a single machine. If that device is lost or gets stolen your data is vulnerable to third party intrusion. Cloud computing eliminates this threat completely. Your data is stored off site in our data center. We provide and maintain protection against third party intrusion. Think of the data center like a bank vault for your data. Only authorized users have access to it.

    Gain A Competitive Edge

Moving to Flywire s cloud service gives you access to enterprise-class technology no matter the size of your business. Smaller businesses can now operate with the same agility and functionality of much larger established competitors. Flywire gives you the ability to level the playing field and disrupt the market.

    Better Technology. Better World.

Moving to the cloud not only makes your business lean and nimble but it is also environmentally friendly. Flywire servers are tailored specifically for your operational needs. Server capacity is adjusted accordingly to scale. Unnecessary energy consumption is eliminated resulting in a smaller carbon footprint. Flywire strives to provide the highest quality of services while also seeking sustainable solutions.

State of the art mobile PBX solutions with OptiCaller and Aastra-Ericsson MX ONE

Mobile PBX/ Mobile Extension (MEX) /Unified Communications (UC)

OptiCaller greatly simplifies the use of the Mobile Extension feature where the mobile phone becomes an extension in the Aastra-Ericsson MX ONE. Using OptiCaller the user can call in the usual way and dial numbers manually, from the phone book or call history. OptiCaller then, transparently to the user, connects calls via the Aastra-Ericsson MX ONE to the destination. In this way the user can benefit from, and access all features of the Aastra-Ericsson MX ONE directly from the mobile device.

    PBX features in the mobile

With OptiCaller it is easy to set your presence status (lunch meeting, sick etc.) using a user-friendly graphical interface. In addition to handling presence it is also possible to access other PBX features such as call forwarding, signing in or out of groups, call recording etc.

Call Optimization with Mobile Least Cost Routing (LCR)

OptiCaller always takes control over how each call is connected and is thus giving the user the opportunity to call in the most cost efficient way. By choosing between calling directly, through the Aastra-Ericsson MX ONE, Call Back or Mobile VoIP (SIP), call costs can often be reduced by between 40-90% depending on the call case. Approved patents protect OptiCaller s automated LCR engine.
