    MCC’s 2017 Trick or Treat Spooktacular welcomed guests to the Mitchell Campus on October 26. Trick-or treaters participated in a candy trail, with games and activities and many joined the costume contest. Winners of the costume contest were in the Ages 0-6 years old category was Colton Phillips, age 2, as Grave Digger and in the Ages 7 up category was Colby Fisher, age 7, as Tonto. The Trick or Treat Spooktacular MCC Department table contest winners were Student Services who recreated scenes from the movie Grease.

    Bachelor of Business Administration (Honours) – International Business Management

    About the Program

    At the end of Year 2, students have the option of specializing in Human Resource Management (HRM), Supply Chain Management (SCM) or Marketing Management (MM), or continuing in the general stream. The Ministry has also approved specializations in Sustainability Management and Project Management and there are plans to implement them over the next few years.

    Program highlights include:

    • three paid co-op terms
    • two major consulting projects
    • use of the Ivey case analysis methodology, teaching you to solve real-world problems with a world-renowned analysis process
    • use of SAP Business Suite Applications

    Our strong international focus includes:

  • Dual degree program with the Institute of Technology Carlow in Ireland
  • A mandatory second language – at least two courses in Spanish, French, German or Mandarin; up to 4 courses in Spanish, German and French.
  • Student exchange opportunities with seventeen universities in the US, Ireland, Chile, Brazil, China, South Korea, France, Spain, Netherlands, Austria, Czech Republic, Hungary and Slovenia.
  • ScotiaBank scholarships for students who wish to study or work overseas as part of their program.

    This international degree program meets a variety of accreditation requirements:

  • Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM) – students can write a qualification exam after completing the Project Management course in Year 1.
  • Forum for International Trade Training (FITT) – after completing 4 FITT skills-accredited courses in the first two years, students may write a FITT skills assessment to qualify for a FITT Certificate.
  • Certified International Trade Professional (CITP) – Graduates of the Marketing Management stream can write a FITT skills assessment to qualify for this designation.
  • Certified Supply Chain Professional (CSCP) – graduates of the SCM stream will be well positioned to write the CSCP exam with minimal accreditation make-up courses.
  • Certified Production and Inventory Manager (CPIM) – graduates of the SCM stream will be well positioned to write all five CPIM exams with minimal accreditation make-up courses.
  • Certified Human Resources Leader (CHRL) – the HRM stream covers all the required courses. Upon completion of all required courses with a cumulative average of 70% and no mark less than 65%, graduates may begin the CHRL accreditation process. As of October 1, 2019 the requirements will include 3 exams, 3 years of supervised HR experience and HRPA s Professional Program. Graduates of the HRM stream will also be eligible for CHRP, which is an entry-level HR designation, with fewer requirements.
  • Professional in Human Resources (PHR) – the HRM stream has been approved by the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM). Graduates may write the PHR exam after completing two years of work experience.
  • Canadian Institute of Management (CIM) – Certified in Management upon completion of Management Aptitude Evaluation (MAE); C.Mgr. designation upon completion of degree + MAE + 4 years professional experience.

    • Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD), or equivalent, OR 19 years of age or older
    • A minimum of six (6) Grade 12 courses with a minimum cumulative average of 65%, including two (2) required U level courses and one (1) required U or M level course from a specified group of courses and three (3) additional U or M level courses. (Higher averages are often required for admission.)
    • The following Grade 12 U courses are required:
      • English (ENG4U)
      • One (1) Grade 12 Mathematics course from the following: Calculus and Vectors (MCV4U) OR Advanced Functions (MHF4U) OR Mathematics of Data Management (MDM4U)
      • At least one Grade 12 U or M course from ONE of the following disciplines: Canadian and World Studies, Classical Studies and International Languages, French as a Second Language, Social Sciences and Humanities, or Business Studies
      • Three (3) other Grade 12 U or M courses

    Note re: Admission Requirements

    • The minimum cumulative average required for consideration is 65%. Higher averages are often required for admission due to competition for available spaces in the program.

    Admission Procedures

    • Academic strength is calculated by averaging all submitted Grade 12 marks (or equivalent) of the required subjects and three additional U or M courses. If more than three additional courses are submitted, the course(s) with the highest mark(s) will be used.
    • Applicants may be required to complete a supplementary information sheet and attend an interview.
    • A sound mathematical and English background is important for success in this program and is considered during the admission selection process. Minimum cutoffs apply.

    Program Requirements

    • Students in this program are required to bring a mobile device that meets minimum specified requirements.
    • Students in this program are required to participate in Conestoga s eText initiative.
    • Students are required to successfully complete two language electives (in one language) in order to graduate.
    • Applicants must have basic computer literacy.
    • The academic requirements to be eligible for a co-op work term in a degree program are as follows:
      • Minimum 2.5 sessional GPA (65% weighted sessional average) in the eligibility term two academic semesters prior to any co-op work term
      • Maximum two failures or withdrawals during the academic semester that occurs in the eligibility term two academic semesters prior to any co-op work term
      • Must have successfully completed all but two core courses, according to the program design, by the eligibility term prior to any given work term (regardless of the level the student was placed in advanced standing)
      • Students (even those on special timetables) will not be permitted to complete a co-op work term until conditions above are met and all but two core course deficiencies, according to the program design, are cleared
      • Co-op work terms may need to be re-sequenced to allow academic deficiencies to be cleared or in the event a student changes cohorts (i.e. graduation is delayed by one year or more). Students may not repeat a passed work term
      • Should a student s academic performance decline considerably during the term just prior to any work term, the college reserves the right to withdraw the student from the upcoming work term

    III. Course (Catalog) Description

    Course introduces students to the study of business. Content includes issues and topics related to business and economics in the United States and globally; business careers; key components of a business plan; and the ethical, legal, and social responsibilities of business.

    IV. Learning Objectives

    After successful completion of this course, students should be able to:

    1. Describe the relationship between business and economics in the United States and globally, and be able to demonstrate a global perspective regarding the opportunities and challenges of conducting businesses in the global marketplace.
    2. Discuss how issues of social responsibility and ethics affect business as well as apply ethical, legal, and societal perspectives to business decisions and situations.
    3. Use basic information technology (including word processing and electronic mail) when communicating in writing and orally, and demonstrate the ability to find, locate and utilize appropriate business information resources
    4. Use resources to effectively explore career opportunities, and create a resume
    5. Describe various types of legal ownership; define what a small business and entrepreneurship are and their importance to the U. S. economy; discuss the advantages and disadvantages of operating a small business and explain how the Small Business Administration helps small businesses; and explain the various types of franchising opportunities as well as their advantages and disadvantages.
    6. Develop key components of a business plan.
    7. Summarize basic principles of management and the role of a manager; and recognize the differences between managers and leaders.
    8. Discuss current human resources management issues including employee-management issues, and motivation.
    9. Explain how to create value through product development, marketing, operations, quality improvement, supply chain management, the use of information, and the Internet.
    10. Explain the role of accountants, the purpose of various financial statements, and how financial management is used to obtain money and insure that it is used effectively.

    V. Academic Integrity

    Students and employees at Oakton Community College are required to demonstrate academic integrity and follow Oakton’s Code of Academic Conduct. This code prohibits:

    • cheating,
    • plagiarism (turning in work not written by you, or lacking proper citation),
    • falsification and fabrication (lying or distorting the truth),
    • helping others to cheat,
    • unauthorized changes on official documents,
    • pretending to be someone else or having someone else pretend to be you,
    • making or accepting bribes, special favors, or threats, and
    • any other behavior that violates academic integrity.

    There are serious consequences to violations of the academic integrity policy. Oakton’s policies and procedures provide students a fair hearing if a complaint is made against you. If you are found to have violated the policy, the minimum penalty is failure on the assignment and, a disciplinary record will be established and kept on file in the office of the Vice President for Student Affairs for a period of 3 years.

    14. Financial management, and accounting
    15. Securities markets
    16. Information technology (including word processing and electronic mail) including the use of electronic mail and word processing
    17. Locating and utilizing appropriate business information resources
    18. Career opportunities and creation of a resume

    VII. Methods of Instruction

    Instructors will utilize a variety of learning activities such as group work, oral presentations, quizzes/tests, assignments, discussion, and lecture. Course content and assignments will encourage critical thinking and the use of information resources and technology.
    Course may be taught as face-to-face, media-based, hybrid or online course.

    Students will be expected to read and write English at the college level.

    X. Methods of Evaluating Student Progress

    Course grades will be determined by the student’s demonstration of proficiency regarding course objectives and understanding of the course material based on the following as determined by the instructor: Class discussion, in- and out-of-class individual and group assignments and activities, attendance and participation, Internet-based activities, quizzes and/or tests.

    1. Tutoring

    The savvy entrepreneur knows that the business you launch should reflect your unique skill set. As a college student, you may want to consider tutoring other students in your area(s) of expertise.

    While many schools offer free tutoring, these services are often available on a limited schedule. By starting a private tutoring business, you can offer sessions in the evenings and late at night when college students are often cramming.

    Of course, once your tutoring business takes off, you can target a wider market.     Parents have slammed the teaching watchdog for failing to de-register a teacher who showed students R-rated movies, paid them for massages and told stories about incest.

    The Victorian Institute of Teaching’s handling of the case has also been criticised by Education Minister James Merlino, who said he was “concerned by the timeframe” and “seeking an explanation” .

    Chris Adams was suspended from Caulfield Junior College in November 2015 after parents complained about his “inappropriate” storytelling, which included tales of incest, urination, murder and defecation. They also raised concerns about him paying students for massages, and creating videos where students surrounded him “like a royal figure”.

    In one video obtained by Fairfax Media. two students are seen massaging the teacher’s shoulders and head while the remainder of the class bow down to him and cool him with fans.

    The Education Department sacked Mr Adams from the state school in January after conducting an investigation and finding he acted in a “disgraceful, improper” manner.

    And earlier this week, the Fair Work Commission upheld the Department’s decision. after Mr Adams unsuccessfully argued that he had been unfairly dismissed.

    The Department alleged that Mr Adams inserted his students’ names into the “inappropriate” stories, which detailed a student having a baby, a child falling in love and marrying her brother and a priest accidentally urinating on a girl’s dress in a boys’ toilet.

    Mr Adams told his students not to repeat the stories outside the classroom because he didn’t want them to “take on a different character”.

    He also showed them R-rated fight scenes from Jean-Claude Van Damme movies and provided students with a document titled ‘how to control a bunch of ungrateful, odorous children’. It was set out like a science experiment and detailed how to humiliate students by criticising their work, questioning their intelligence, shoving soap down girls’ throats and spraying “two full cans of deodorant into her face, to give her a nice fresh smell”.

    Mr Merlino said the teacher’s conduct was “entirely inconsistent with the behaviour expected of our teachers”.

    But while the Education Department has barred Mr Adams from working in Victorian state schools, the Victorian Institute of Teaching has not cancelled or suspended his registration, which means he can still work in independent and Catholic schools.

    The institute has been conducting its own investigation into the teacher’s alleged misconduct since November 2015.

    “It worries me that he is still holding his licence and that he can still work with children,” one parent from Caulfield Junior College said.

    Victorian Institute of Teaching chief executive Melanie Saba said that the investigation would conclude shortly.

    She said that it was a “complex” investigation that involved many witnesses, other agencies including police and a simultaneous Fair Work Commission case.

    “We acknowledge that it can be frustrating when investigations are lengthy,” she said. “However, complex investigations like this must be handled carefully and can prove time consuming.”

    Another parent said that if a teacher was barred from working in one education sector, there should automatically be restrictions on their employment in other sectors.

    For most parents, saving for college feels like climbing to the summit of a very tall mountain. And it doesn’t help that the path keeps getting steeper; tuition hikes have far exceeded inflation over the past several decades. If your child is a newborn, expect a degree from a four-year, in-state public college to run about $222,000, assuming 5% annual growth in the cost of college; four years at a private school could be double that.

    TOOL: Find the Best 529 Plan for You

    Luckily, tools are available to help you scale the heights. State-sponsored investment programs known as 529 plans, as well as other kinds of savings programs, can provide the momentum you need to reach your goal. And you probably won’t need to save the full amount. Most families get a discount in the form of grants, scholarships and education tax breaks and use loans to fill the gap—more than two-thirds of college seniors graduate with student debt.

    A more realistic goal: Save about one-third of your expected college costs. When the time comes, current income, grants and loans can cover the rest. “Planning ahead is the key,” says Betty Lochner, of the College Savings Plans Network, which collects data on 529 plans. (To estimate what you’ll need to save under different scenarios, use the college-savings calculator by The College Board .)

    The best place to save is in a 529 plan. Sponsored by 48 states and the District of Columbia (neither Washington State nor Wyoming offers a 529 savings plan), these investment accounts let your savings grow tax-free, and the earnings escape tax completely if the withdrawals are used for qualified college expenses, which include tuition, fees, and room and board. The appeal of 529 plans lies in their easy access as well as their tax benefits. The plans have no income limit and set a high cap on contributions. Two-thirds of the states and the District of Columbia give a tax deduction or credit for contributions. If your child skips college, you can make the recipient a sibling, grandchild, niece or nephew (or even yourself) without losing the tax break.

    There are a few drawbacks. If you cash out for non-college purposes, you’ll owe income tax and a 10% penalty on earnings (but not on contributions). You may have to return any state tax deductions, too. Plus, you’re limited to the investment options in your plan. After you pick a portfolio, you must wait 12 months before you can change the investment mix or transfer the money to another plan.

    Buy a 529 plan directly from your state if it offers a tax break. Most states offer two types of college-savings plans: a low-cost plan sold directly by the state and a higher-cost plan sold by a broker. The lower expenses of a direct-sold plan mean more of your money will go toward building your college fund. And in most cases, the state tax break will trump lower fees in an out-of-state program.     If your state doesn’t offer a tax break—or if you live in Arizona, Kansas, Maine, Missouri, Montana or Pennsylvania, which offer a tax break no matter where you invest—you can search for the best state plan that meets your goals. Figuring out which plan that is depends on what matters most to you. Low fees? An aggressive or conservative investment track? A plan with lots of investment options?

    States generally offer an array of choices, including age-based port­folios, which adjust the mix of in­vestments automatically to become more conservative as your child ages; funds that focus on stocks or bonds (or both); and guaranteed-principal or principal-protected funds. But some plans offer better-performing funds and a more diversified mix of investments than others. And some plans charge lower maintenance fees, have funds with lower annual expense ratios, or both.

    Best for hands-on investors. The solid funds in the Utah Educational Savings Plan are mostly index-based. They include 18 from Vanguard and 6 from Dimensional Fund Advisors. And UESP ranks among the lowest-cost 529 programs in the country. But here’s what we really like about Utah for do-it-yourselfers: customization. As with most 529 plans, you can handpick individual funds from Utah’s so-called static portfolios. But this plan also lets you create a tailor-made portfolio and have it automatically adjust at three-year intervals according to your preferences as your child nears his college years. No other state plan offers this feature in its age-based tracks.

    TOOL: Find the Best 529 Plan for You

    Best for low fees. New York’s 529 College Savings Program uses Vanguard funds, so it should come as no surprise that it has low costs. The average expense ratio charged by its underlying funds (0.17%, according to Morningstar) is significantly lower than the 0.76% expense ratio charged by the typical U.S. stock index fund. Even better, the plan has no annual maintenance fee.

    We also like that the plan offers three age-based tracks with different risk profiles: aggressive, moderate and conservative. The aggressive track starts at birth with 100% in stocks and ends with 0% in stocks at age 19 (it’s 25% in the last three years of high school). New York’s age-based portfolios don’t include an international stock fund. But the program’s assortment of individual funds does have a foreign-stock option: Vanguard Developed Markets Index fund.

    Best age-based plan for aggressive investors. If an aggressive track with top-tier funds is what you seek, you’ll find it in the Maryland College Investment Plan. From birth through age 4, the portfolio holds 100% stocks—including stocks in developed and emerging countries. As your child ages, the track adjusts every three years, ticking down its stock investments to 40% when your child hits age 14 and 23% at age 18. By contrast, the average 529 plan’s age-based allocation to stocks is 80% in the early years and 10% at age 19.

    What’s more, Maryland’s 529 plan is packed with good funds from T. Rowe Price, including Blue Chip Growth, Mid-Cap Growth, Small-Cap Stock and International Growth & Income. The lineup helped the age-based track targeted for 2030 post a 14.0% three-year annualized return (through June 30), two percentage points ahead of the typical age-based track for children between birth and 6 years old.

    Best age-based plan for conservative investors. This one is tricky. Some conservative age-based tracks are simply too conservative. The conservative age-based track of New York’s 529 plan, for instance, sets out at birth with 50% invested in stocks and pares that to zero by age 11. But at that age, you still have six or seven years before your child matriculates, and stocks offer the best chance of increasing the size of your portfolio. That’s why we like Utah’s moderate and conservative tracks for conservative investors. In the early years, both tracks load up on stocks (80% in moderate; 60% in conservative), but the mix trickles down to 0% stocks by age 19 in the moderate trajectory, and it goes to 0% by age 13 in the conservative path.

    Best for nervous Nellies. After 2008, many plans added savings options backed by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. to their investment lineups. You won’t lose money in these kinds of funds, but you certainly won’t keep up with the rate of college-tuition inflation. Still, says Scott Kahan, a certified financial planner based in New York City, “If you have a big lump sum—enough money to put away for college—and you want to be conservative, or your child is going to college next year,” these savings plans can make sense. Many state plans have a high-yield savings account among their investment options. For stand-alone plans, we like the bank-sponsored option offered through Virginia’s CollegeWealth plan with Union First Market Bank. It recently offered a 2% yield (2.25% for balances greater than $10,000).

    Best if you want hand-holding. Rather have an adviser do all of the work? That can be okay. Some fee-only advisers, such as Gifford Lehman, a certified financial planner in Monterey, Calif. set their clients up in direct-sold plans. (Lehman’s favorite plan is Utah’s.)

    But if your adviser puts you in an adviser-sold plan, consider yourself warned: You’ll pay for that. Funds in adviser-sold plans cost an average of 1.28% in annual expenses, more than double the 0.60% average expense ratio for funds in direct-sold plans, according to Morningstar.

    If you think the hand-holding is worth the cost, go with Virginia’s College America plan. It holds many top-notch American Funds, such as International Growth and Income and New Economy, which charge an average of 1.19% in expenses. If your broker or adviser doesn’t have access to CollegeAmerica, try ARKANSAS’S ISHARES 529 PLAN, which invests in thrifty exchange-traded funds. The average annual expense ratio of the funds in the iShares plan is a low 0.59%. There’s a $10 annual fee per account.

    Would you like to make a real difference to the lives of individuals, families and communities? Would you like to prevent harm, neglect and abuse?

    The course has a long standing history of delivering the social work degree going back to the late 1980’s. We have a small and friendly team with a great wealth of experience covering a range of areas of expertise. We have approximately 25 students in each year group and this enables us to have small teaching groups and offer a high level of tutorial and academic support to students.

    Students also benefit from regular sessions presented by service users and carers groups. Service user and carer input on the programme is integral to its design and delivery for which it has been commended.

    Current social work practitioners assist in the delivery of modules by virtue of the well-established relationship between the college and social work agencies.

    Students complete placements within social work settings of 70 days in year 2 and 100 days
    in year 3. The majority of placements are in Worcestershire and will often require students to
    be able to travel to and whilst on placement.

    The course is validated by Birmingham City University (BCU). On completing the programme, students
    receive their degree from BCU and are eligible to apply for entry to the register as a social worker
    with the Health and Care Professions Council.

    You will be taught by experienced and enthusiastic staff, most of them qualified and registered social workers. All our staff maintain active links with partner agencies and practitioners.

    The course also has a high level of practitioner and service user input and involvement into teaching.

    How will I be assessed?

    In addition to this you will also undertake two practice placements. You will be assigned a personal tutor who will review and discuss your progress with you, and will be available for advice.

    Students are assessed using a variety of methods including assignments, individual and group presentations and direct observations.

    There is also an exam for the Law Module in year 2.

    What can I do next

    On completing the programme, students are eligible to apply for entry to the register as a social worker with the Health and Care Professions Council.

    The programme has an excellent record in terms of students going onto work for local employers.

    Located just a 35-minute drive from downtown Boston, Wompatuck State Park offers 262 wooded campsites (140 of them with electricity ), 12 miles of paved bicycle trails, and many miles of wooded bridle paths and hiking trails. The park is very popular with trailer campers: electric hookups, a dumping station, and potable water are all available. Fishing is allowed in the Cohasset Reservoir. A boat ramp is provided for car-top boats, but no boat trailers, please.

    One of the most notable features of the Park is Mt. Blue Spring which is a popular source of fresh drinking water. Visitors can help themselves for free. The park is named for an Indian chief the local colonists knew as Josiah Wompatuck. In 1665, Chief Wompatuck deeded the park and the surrounding land to the English settlers. During WWII the park was used as an ammunition depot by the US military.

    EARL HAMNER

    A sign on the door of Earl Hamner’s office reads: work is for people who don’t know how to fish, so if there is no answering knock it is probable that Earl is trolling for salmon in British Columbia, fly casting for bone fish in Florida or gone to Baja in search of marlin.

    While he has caught the Canadian salmon, the Florida bone fish and the Mexican marlin, the writer’s happiest fishing grounds are on the Rockfish River in his home town of Schuyler, Virginia where he first learned to fish with his father during the Great Depression of the 1930’s.

    Hamner was born in Schuyler in 1923. The village has since been the fountainhead of much of his literary work and has become a Mecca for fans of his books and television work from all over the world.The oldest of eight red headed children, born to Doris Gianinni Hamner and Earl Hamner Sr. Earl began writing when he was six. He wrote a poem about a wagon full of puppies which he carted about in a little red wagon. Since he had neither puppies nor a little red wagon at the time, his first effort at creativity caused his father some anxiety. Nevertheless, the poem was published on the children’s page of The Richmond Times Dispatch and Earl was hooked on a writing career.

    Upon graduation from Schuyler High School, Hamner entered the University of Richmond on a scholarship. He was drafted into the United States Army in 1943 and received training in the demolition of land mines. On the battlefield, such an occupation has a life expectancy of thirty to forty seconds for the demolisher as well as those around him. Fortunately, the Army reconsidered and assigned Earl to a Quartermaster Corps unit in Paris where he served without demolishing himself or any of his fellow soldiers. While Earl never became a boulevardier he did learn how to get from Opera to Auberville on the Metro and how to order ouefs et jambon in a French restaurant.

    Upon his return to as civilian life Hamner worked at radio station WMBG in Richmond. He furthered his education at Northwestern University and graduated from the University of Cincinnati.

    While working as a radio writer at the National Broadcasting Company in New York, Earl published his first novel, FIFTY ROADS TO TOWN. Other novels followed such as YOU CANT’ GET THERE FROM HERE, and the best seller SPENCER’S MOUNTAIN which was made into a Warner Brothers film starring Henry Fonda and Maureen O’Hara. Earl also wrote the novel YOU CAN’T GET THERE FROM HERE which was optioned by Broadway’s Richard Rogers. Rogers was working on the musical version of the novel at the time of his death. Hamner’s novella THE HOMECOMING became the basis for the beloved CBS Christmas special starring Richard Thomas, Patricia Neal and Edgar Bergen.

    Hamner worked in live television during its Golden Age, and when the industry moved from New York to Hollywood, Hamner moved there too in 1961. He wrote episodes for many of the major freelance markets including THE TWILIGHT ZONE, and CBS PLAYHOUSE. He also became active in feature films and was selected by E. B. White to write the film adaptation of CHARLOTTE’S WEB. Earl’s other film credits include WHERE THE LILLIES BLOOM and PALM SPRINGS WEEKEND.

    In 1970 the distinguished Virginian was asked by Lorimar Productions to write a television special based on his novel THE HOMECOMING. The overwhelming critical and audience response to the special led to the series THE WALTONS which had a spectacular run of eight years on CBS followed by a year of special programs on NBC. These many years later the series is still being rerun on The Family Channel where it is their top rated show.

    During that time Hamner also wrote and produced the series APPLE’S WAY, BOONE, THORPE, THE YOUNG PIONEERS, MORNING STAR- EVENING STAR and THE LONG HOT SUMMER.

    In a total change of pace from gentle family fare Hamner wrote and produced the pilot for FALCON CREST, a study of a rich and ruthless family of vintners in California’s Napa Valley. With Jane Wyman starring, the series enjoyed a successful run of eight years on CBS.

    Earl recently served as co-executive producer for the Family Channel series, SNOWY RIVER: THE MCGREGOR SAGA.

    For his writing Hamner has been honored by the Television Academy with an Emmy. He has also received the Peabody Award for Distinguished Journalism, The Man of the Year Award from the State of Virginia, the Man of the Year Award of the Broadcast Industry by the SPATE Convention. He has received Honorary Doctorates from the University of Richmond, Berea College, Morris Harvey College, DePaul University in Chicago and Loyola University of New Orleans.

    Hamner lives in Los Angeles and Laguna Beach, California with his wife, Jane. They have two children, Scott and Caroline (Carrie).

    Brown offers undergraduates a Bachelor of Arts in music with three areas of concentration to choose from: a theory, history and composition track, an ethnomusicology track and a computer music and multimedia track.     Paul West, currently the Executive Director of Education for the DELTA Academies Trust, will succeed Dame Susan Jowett who retires at the end of August 2017 after a long and distinguished career in education, including the Principalship of the outstanding George Spencer Academy.

    Paul takes over at an exciting time in the Trust’s development. It is a medium-sized Trust of ten academies, eight of which now have ‘good or outstanding’ Ofsted judgements and one Primary school has yet to be inspected.

    If you haven’t done testing before here are some tips.

    • Don’t delete the installation folder when you finish installing! While we’re working we turn that security feature off to make it easier to test.
    • Go to global configuration and set Error Reporting to Development (that’s on the server tab) and enable both debugging and language debugging (those are on the system tab). Don’t worry when you see ** around words –that means Joomla translation is doing its job.
    • First, do the things you normally do and see if you spot any problems.
    • Look at all of the front end views and record any problems
    • Look at all the back end views and report any problems
    • See more ideas below

    What to look for

    • Any error messages that say things like Fatal Error or Strict or similar things that indicate that something is not working correctly.
    • Untranslated strings. You will know these because they look like this. STRING_HERE?
    • Problems of rendering–items not aligned correctly, missing or wrong images, pages that just don’t look right.
    • Unexpected behavior–anything that is working differently than it did in 2.5.

    If you find a problem please report it to the CMS Issue Tracker. You will need to register for a joomlacode.org account if you don’t have one.

    More Testing Ideas

    • Pick one module or view and test all of the parameters.
    • Install an extension and see if anything breaks (report to the developer unless you are positive it is a core bug).
    • Turn on caching with different options
    • Try different session options
    • Install a language and test all the layouts.
    • Try different environments (like different servers which may have different version of PHP) or try you have IIS with MySQLi or SqlSrv. With millions of users Joomla needs to be ready for unusual environments.
    • Try with SEF URLS on or off and also with Apache rewrite on or off (if you are on Apache).
    • Try different combinations of browsers (Chrome, IE, FireFox, Opera to start) and operating systems (Mac, Windows, Linux).
    • Yes grammar and spelling errors are bugs too — just keep in mind that we use British spelling.
    • Visit the Feature Tracker and test a new feature.

    Cosmetology program under new direction

    (Lamar, Colorado; June 14, 2017 ) Lamar Community College is proud to welcome Kendra King as the new full-time faculty member and department head of Cosmetology. King, who has worked in the beauty industry for over ten years, will bring a wealth of knowledge to the program at LCC.

    King is a certified cosmetologist, licensed in Kansas and Colorado, and she plans to obtain her barbering license as well. She has already worked with LCC as an instructor for the Nail Tech program, and is excited to take on the new title.

    King currently works at the Hair Gallery in Lamar, and she is looking forward to transitioning her career from industry to teaching.

    “Even when I was in school, I knew that I wanted to teach,” she said. “But I also knew I needed some time in the industry in order to be successful as a teacher. I’ve always wanted to start teaching but I wanted to make sure I had the years in the field and experience necessary to pass that information along to my students.”

    “I would like to say thank you to Kaitlin Emick for all her hard work on the program and for the legacy that she’s leaving behind,” King said. “She’s made some great changes within the program recently and I look forward to continuing to build on her successes.”

    King is working towards strengthening the Cosmetology department and furthering its influence in the community. “We are excited about what Kendra will bring to students in Cosmetology,” said Stager. “She has a vision for building on our successes.”

    King sees many opportunities for students. “I think there is always going to be a demand for someone who is really good at their field,” she said. “I’m looking for students who want to make a career out of this, and I want them to know that there are so many different career options. Cosmetology students can be makeup artists, color specialists, nail techs, work for a business within the beauty industry, be stylists at hair shows – there are so many different avenues you can pursue within the industry.”

    King began her education in Cosmetology at Northwest Kansas Technical College (NWKTC). She served as the President of her cosmetology class as well as a college Ambassador.

    She moved to Lamar in 2015. In her time outside of the classroom and salon, she enjoys spending time with her boyfriend Jeremy Hall and his kids, Austin, Wyatt, and Dillon. Her son Tristen Perry will be a senior this coming year at Fort Hays State University.

    What’s an NP?

    A nurse practitioner (NP) is a registered nurse (RN) who has additional education and training in a specialty area, such as family practice or pediatrics. Pediatric and family practice NPs can provide regular health care for kids.

    Nurse practitioners (also referred to as advanced practice nurses, or APNs) have a master’s degree in nursing (MS or MSN) and board certification in their specialty. For example, a pediatric NP has advanced education, skills, and training in caring for infants, children, and teens.

    Licensed as nurse practitioners and registered nurses, NPs follow the rules and regulations of the Nurse Practice Act of the state where they work. If accredited through the national board exam, the NP will have an additional credential, such as Certified Pediatric Nurse Practitioner (CPNP) or Certified Family Nurse Practitioner (CFNP).

    An NP who specializes in pediatrics can:

    • document health history and perform a physical exam
    • plan a child’s care with parents and the child’s health care team
    • do some tests and procedures
    • answer questions about health problems
    • treat common childhood illnesses
    • specialize in and manage chronic illnesses
    • change the plan of care with a child’s doctor as needed
    • teach families about the effects of illness on a child’s growth and development
    • teach kids about self-care and healthy lifestyle choices
    • write prescriptions
    • order medical tests
    • teach other health care members, student nurses, and local groups about children’s health care
    • provide referrals to community groups
    • provide telemedicine care for children and their parents

    NPs and Doctors

    Most NPs maintain close working relationships with doctors and consult them as needed. NPs are licensed in all 50 states and can dispense most medicines. Some states require a doctor to co-sign prescriptions. In a few states, NPs can practice and prescribe without physician supervision.

    Although doctors have additional training to help patients deal with complex medical problems, many people feel that NPs spend more time with their patients. NP training emphasizes disease prevention, reduction of health risks, and thorough patient education.

    Like doctors, NPs are involved in more than just direct patient care. Many participate in education, research, and legislative activities to improve the quality of health care in the United States.

    Should My Kids See a Nurse Practitioner?

    Pediatric NPs can deliver much of the health care that kids require, consulting doctors and specialists as necessary. Educating kids and their families about normal growth and childhood development issues (e.g. toilet training. temper tantrums. biting ) is a big part of the pediatric NP’s role.

    Pediatric and family practice NPs can treat acute (short-term) illnesses such as upper respiratory infections, ear infections. rashes, and urinary tract infections. They can also specilaize in and manage chronic illnesses such as asthma. allergies. diabetes. and many others.

    If your child has severe health problems that require advanced training or highly specialized medical care, you may need to see a doctor. If you’re unsure about your child’s specific illness and want to know if an NP can help, ask your doctor. The scope of an NP’s practice depends upon your state’s regulations.

    If you want to verify an NP’s credentials, check with the American College of Nurse Practitioners (ACNP). It’s also a good idea to ask NPs about their specific qualifications, education, and training, just as you would interview any doctor for your child.

    Also be sure to check with your health insurance provider to be sure that services provided by NPs are covered through your policy.

    How Can I Find an NP?

    You can find pediatric NPs through the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners (NAPNAP) and through local hospitals or nursing schools. Also, many doctors share office space with NPs to provide all types of primary care. Other doctors work with NPs to offer them training in different types of health care. Your doctor might already have such an arrangement in place, so just ask.

    Students seeking admission to teacher education programs must have taken the ACT exam and have a 2.00 overall GPA. As required by the State of Michigan to receive Elementary Education teacher certification, all Elementary Education teacher candidates must: (1) pass the Michigan Basic Skills Test, (2) pass the pedagogy tests in their subject area majors and minors, and (3) have a 2.50 minimum GPA to receive teacher certification in Michigan. These state requirements are in addition to the FSU graduation requirements of the elementary education degree program.

Students in our HIT program will hone the high-tech skills needed to manage and analyze information for both patients and the facilities where they receive care. You’ll find career opportunities at hospitals, physician offices, nursing homes, government agencies, and other healthcare facilities.

    Our HIT graduates are in demand for positions including Inpatient and/or Outpatient Coder, Health Data Analyst, Abstractor, Medical Records Manager, Health Information Management (HIM) Supervisor, and HIM Manager.

    Finish your Bachelor of Science degree in Healthcare Management or Health Studies in only two years or less through online, weekend, and evening classes in State College or Altoona. South Hills students will be guaranteed acceptance with a 2.0 GPA and up to 64 credits from our HIT program will automatically transfer into the program. Students and alumni may transfer in additional credits through military or other colleges as applicable, accepting up to 98 credits. The customizable curriculum allows you to take as few or as many classes as you want so you can balance work, family, and life. Financial aid is available to those who qualify.     ​​ Civilian Education: Worth up to 100 Promotion Points (Read Below to find out how you may already have over 50 points Now) The purpose is to help Soldiers become better Educated and earn quicker Army Promotions by assisting in not only their Army Educations but also their College Educations as well.

    By Far the Fastest and Easiest of the areas to add and increase points is through Civilian Education through College by either Online College Classes, Military Evaluations or Clep Exams. There are several methods to accomplish this. While some people already have some college and can just add their Transcripts.

    You should no matter what enroll in Online College Classes or take traditional College Courses at the Education Center. Personally I would recommend the Online Classes as they allow you to study and perform your work at your own pace and you are not locked down to specific hours of being in a particular class. Either way with the Army’s TA it will usually not cost you a dime except for books and there are Many Colleges out there that are Online that will even throw the books in for free if you are using TA. So take advantage of your Benefit and Enroll ASAP. The Online Classes are a lot easier than you would think. With the one’s that I have taken, All of the Tests that I took were All Open Book. It can’t get much Easier than that.

    You can also take CLEP exams at the education center which will only take a couple hours of your day. Spending a couple hours to get 3 promotion points is a lot easier than spending 40 hours in a week long Military course trust me. But ensure that you study, some of these test can be difficult.

    But the ABSOLUTE easiest and best hands down is to have your Military Training Evaluated by a Civilian College for College Credits. This for me was the best bang for the buck and for my time by far. All you will need is a copy of your AARTS Transcript and a College that transfers your Military Training to Civilian Credits. Some Colleges will generally only charge a small enrollment fee and transcript fee and you could have a Transcript in as little as a couple of weeks. This fee is the Best investment that you will ever make and you will make this back the first month of your promotion. There is not a stock on the Market or a Mutual Fund out there that could give you a Rate of Return like this will.

    The College that I chose was North Central Institute and only took a couple of weeks after I sent them my AARTS Transcript and I was then sent an Official Transcript with 57 College Credits that I was able to add for Promotion. I did not have to wait until I completed four classes with them or anything. I just sent in the AARTS Transcript and the money and they sent the Official Transcript and everything was completed in a couple of weeks. This is hands down the best way for any Soldier to add promotion points to their PPW to get promoted. My Military Training evaluation cost me a total of $250.00 and only took two weeks to get the Official College Transcript in my hands. There isn’t a Stock or a Mutual Fund that will Pay you like you will make on your investment of that small of an amount. It is like taking out an Insurance Policy to ensure that you get Paid and to ensure that you get promoted. So YOU should be the one that spends the $250.00 to take out that Insurance Policy and Making that Investment in your Future not the Other Guy.

    The 22-year-old man suspected of fatally stabbing three of his housemates before carrying out a mass shooting near the University of California, Santa Barbara late Friday feared that police would discover his murderous plan when they visited him last month.

    Elliot Rodger, the son of Hollywood director Peter Rodger — an assistant director on The Hunger Games films series — was identified by police as the suspect in a press conference Saturday evening. The gunman killed three people in the shooting spree in the beachside community of Isla Vista and injured 13 others before he was found dead in his car of a gunshot wound to the head.

    The rampage occurred hours after authorities said Rodger warned in a YouTube video that he would kill all who had wronged him.

    Police went to Rodger’s apartment April 30 to conduct a wellness check after being contacted by members of Rodger’s family who were concerned about disturbing videos he had posted on YouTube. Santa Barbara County Sheriff Bill Brown said that deputies had reported back that Rodger was shy, polite and said the Santa Barbara community college student had been having a difficult social life.

    In a 140-page manifesto that police discovered in Rodger’s apartment Saturday, the suspect writes that he told the police that the videos were a misunderstanding, but adds If they had demanded to search my room . That would have ended everything. For a few horrible seconds I thought it was all over.

    Rodger claimed in his manifesto that he had begun considering his rampage on New Year’s Day of this year. The shooting was supposed to be carried out in April, but Rodger had pushed it back due to illness.

    An attorney for Rodger’s family said earlier Saturday that they believed Rodger had been the shooter and acknowledged that they had called police weeks before about disturbing YouTube videos concerning regarding suicide and the killing of people.

    Deputies wounded him during two separate shootouts as he sped through Isla Vista, leaving a trail of bloodshed that ended with Rodger apparently shooting himself in the head before crashing his black BMW crashing into a parked car, Brown said.

    Of the thirteen people who were injured, eight were injured by gunshots, four were hit by Rodger’s car and one suffered a minor injury whose exact cause was not clear yet.

    Early Sunday, the Santa Barbera County Sheriff’s Department formally identified the three shooting victims as Katherine Breann Cooper, 22, of Chino Hills, Calif.; Veronika Elizabeth Weiss, 19, of Westlake Villiage, Calif., and Christopher Ross Michaels-Martinez, 20, of Los Osos, Calif. The names of the victims found in Rodger’s apartment have not yet been released.

    Deputies found three semi-automatic handguns with 400 unspent rounds in his black BMW. All were purchased legally.

    Authorities had had three contacts with Rodgers in the past year, including one case in which he claimed to be beaten but deputies suspected he was the aggressor.

    Brown called the tragedy the work of a madman and said the videotape posted by Rodger the night of the killings is a particularly chilling one, in which he looks at the camera and talks about what he is about to do.

    In the YouTube video, Rodger sits in a car and looks at the camera, laughing often, and says he is going to take his revenge against humanity. He describes loneliness and frustration because girls have never been attracted to me, and says, at age 22, he is still a virgin. The video, which is almost seven minutes long, appears scripted.

    I’ll take great pleasure in slaughtering all of you. You will finally see that I am, in truth, the superior one, the true alpha male, he says on the video.

    Police described how he spent 10 minutes traveling from one location to another and opened fire on random people after leaving a gruesome scene at his apartment, where three men were stabbed to death.

    Earlier Saturday, attorney Alan Shifman issued a statement saying Peter Rodger believed his son, Elliot Rodger, was the shooter. It was unclear how the son would have obtained a gun. The family is staunchly against guns, he added.

    The Rodger family offers their deepest compassion and sympathy to the families involved in this terrible tragedy. We are experiencing the most inconceivable pain, and our hearts go out to everybody involved, Shifman said.

    Richard Martinez, the father of Christopher Michaels-Martinez, blamed politicians and gun-rights proponents at a news conference Saturday. When will this insanity stop? . Too many have died. We should say to ourselves `not one more, ‘ he said.

    The shootings started around 9:30 p.m. Friday in Isla Vista, a roughly half-square-mile community next to UC Santa Barbara’s campus and picturesque beachside cliffs.

    Alexander Mattera, 23, said his friend Chris Johnson was walking out of an improv comedy show when he was shot in front of a popular pizza place. He stumbled into a nearby house.

    He walked into these random guys’ house bleeding, he said.

    Mattera was sitting at a bonfire with friends when at least one gunshot whizzed overhead. The friends ran for cover when they heard the barrage of gunfire.

    We heard so many gunshots. It was unbelievable. I thought they were firecrackers, he said.

    Isla Vista, which is centered on university life with outdoor cafes, bike shops, burger joints, sororities and fraternities, was shrouded in fog and unusually quiet Saturday.

    Police tape crisscrossed Isla Vista streets, while blood was still visible on the asphalt. Bullet holes pierced windows of a parked car and the IV Deli Mart. A small shrine of flowers was growing outside the business, whose floors inside were stained with blood. For much of the day, the wrecked BMW driven by the shooter remained on the street, its windshield smashed in and its driver’s door wide open.

    UC Santa Barbara senior Kyley Scarlet said she heard the BMW smash to a halt outside a house she was in. Scarlet, who is a former sorority president, said two women from a sorority next door were killed on the lawn of Alpha Phi, where a pile of flowers grew on Saturday.

    Crying students wandered up to the spot, shook their heads and hugged each other.

    Scarlet said a third sorority member was wounded there as well.

    Scarlet said she was very disturbed by the video describing his anger at sorority girls.

    It’s hard thinking my actions, being part of a sorority, led him to do this, she said. When I saw that video, I was shaking and crying.

    In a statement, the university said it was shocked and saddened that several students were shot.

    This is almost the kind of event that’s impossible to prevent and almost impossible to predict, UC President Janet Napolitano told reporters after giving the commencement speech at Laney College in Oakland, California.

    Calif. Gov. Jerry Brown offered his condolences to the victims’ families, saying he was saddened to learn of this senseless tragedy.

    The Rodger family is not ready to speak publicly yet, but wants to cooperate fully with police, Shifman said.

    My client’s mission in life will be to try to prevent any such tragedies from ever happening again, he said. This country, this world, needs to address mental illness and the ramifications from not recognizing these illnesses.

    Disproportionate Impact of K-12 School Suspension and Expulsion on Black Students in Southern States

    Nationally, 1.2 million Black students were suspended from K-12 public schools in a single academic year – 55% of those suspensions occurred in 13 Southern states. Districts in the South also were responsible for 50% of Black student expulsions from public schools in the United States.

    This report aims to make transparent the rates at which school discipline practices and policies impact Black students in every K-12 public school district in 13 Southern states: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and West Virginia. Despite comprising only 20.9% of students in the 3,022 districts analyzed, Blacks were suspended and expelled at disproportionately high rates.

    The authors use data from the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights to present school discipline trends related to Black students district-by-district within each state. Districts in which school discipline policies and practices most disproportionately impact Black students are also highlighted. The report concludes with resources and recommendations for parents and families, educators and school leaders, policymakers, journalists, community stakeholders (NAACP chapters, religious congregations, activists, etc.), and others concerned about the school-to-prison pipeline and the educational mistreatment of Black youth in K-12 schools. The authors also offer implications for faculty in schools of education, as well as other sites in which teachers are prepared (e.g. Teach for America) and administrators are certified.
