Synovial Fluid Analysis

Synovial fluid analysis is a group of tests that examine joint (synovial) fluid. The tests help diagnose and treat joint-related problems.

How the test is performed

A sample of synovial fluid is needed for this test. Synovial fluid is normally a thick, straw-colored liquid found in small amounts in joints, bursae, and tendon sheaths.

After the area is cleaned, the health care provider will insert a sterile needle through the skin and into the joint space. Once in the joint, fluid is drawn through the needle into a sterile syringe.

The fluid sample is sent to the laboratory. The laboratory technician will check the sample’s color and clarity, and then place it under a microscope to check it for red and white blood cells, crystals (in the case of gout), and bacteria. In addition, there may be a chemical analysis, and if infection is a concern, a sample will be cultured to see if any bacteria grow.

How to prepare for the test

Normally, no special preparation is necessary, but contact your health care provider before the test to make sure. Tell your doctor if you are taking blood thinners, as they can affect test results.

How the test will feel

Occasionally, the health care provider will first inject local anesthesia with a small needle, which will sting. The aspiration is done with a larger needle and may also cause some pain. The procedure usually lasts less than one minute.

Why the test is performed

The test can help diagnose the cause of pain or swelling in joints. Removing the fluid can also help relieve joint pain.

This test may be used to diagnose:

  • Gout
  • Infection
  • Other inflammatory joint conditions
  • Joint injury
  • Osteoarthritis

What abnormal results mean

Abnormal joint fluid may look cloudy or abnormally thick.

Blood in the joint fluid may be a sign of injury inside the joint or a body-wide bleeding problem. An excess amount of normal synovial fluid can also be a sign of osteoarthritis.

What the risks are

  • Infection of the joint — unusual but more common with repeated aspirations
  • Bleeding into the joint space

Special considerations

Ice or cold packs may be applied to the joint for 24 to 36 hours after the test to reduce the swelling and joint pain. Depending on the exact problem, you can probably resume your normal activities after the procedure. Talk to your health care provider to determine what activity is most appropriate for you.

The Structural Pest Control Board is currently in the process of updating its examinations for all licensing types and branches. In order to keep our exams current and to ensure that they reflect what is actually happening in the industry, we need active licensees to participate in the development process. Over the next several months, multiple two day workshops for all license types and branches will be held in Sacramento. Licensees who attend these workshops will earn a $300 payment for their participation, 8 continuing education hours (6 Technical and 2 Rules and Regulations), and have their travel expenses furnished by the Board. Licensees who have attended in the past have described the experience as both rewarding and enjoyable. You may enrol if:
You are the Primary Cardholder of the TD Credit Card Account on which Balance Protection Insurance is available
You are a Canadian resident
You are between the ages of 18 and 65

Please note: In addition, many coverages offered have individual eligibility requirements that are outlines in the Certificate of Insurance. If you choose to enrol in TD Balance Protection Plus, your spouse can also be covered for many of the benefits that are available to you as the Primary Cardholder and insured person named under the Certificate of Insurance.

Once you reach the age of 66, all coverages will end and the Life coverage will be replaced with Accidental Death At 66. This coverage provides a one-time benefit payment to your TD Credit Card account should you experience an accidental death. You will also see a reduction in the cost of the insurance to $0.59 per $100 of your average daily balance, plus applicable taxes. These changes will take place automatically and will not require any action from you.

If you find yourself out of work, through no fault of your own, TD Balance Protection Insurance and TD Balance Protection Plus include an involuntary unemployment insurance coverage, which can pay a monthly benefit on your eligible outstanding balance as of your date of loss to a maximum of $25,000, to your TD Credit Card Account.

To help you get back on your feet, you may receive an additional monthly benefit payment after you return to work for a minimum of 25 hours or more per week for 30 consecutive days.

If your business is forced to close for financial reasons and you remain unemployed for more than 90 days, you may be entitled to receive a benefit. TD Balance Protection Plus and TD Balance Protection Insurance, include loss of self-employment income coverage, which can pay a monthly benefit on your eligible outstanding balance immediately before the date of the forced closure of your business for financial reasons to a maximum of $25,000, to your TD Credit Card Account.

To help you get back on your feet, you may receive an additional monthly benefit payment after you return to work for a minimum of 25 hours or more per week for 30 consecutive days.

If you become disabled because of an accident or illness and you are unable to work, TD Balance Protection Plus and TD Balance Protection Insurance include total disability coverage, which can pay a monthly benefit on your eligible the outstanding balance as of your date of loss to a maximum of $25,000,to your TD Credit Card Account.

To help you get back on your feet, you may receive an additional monthly benefit payment after you return to work for a minimum of 25 hours or more per week for 30 consecutive days.

TD Balance Protection Plus and TD Balance Protection Insurance provides coverage.

Critical Illness – if you are diagnosed with a covered critical illness (for example, Acute Heart Attack, Stroke or Life-Threatening Cancer, as defined in the Certificate of Insurance) the outstanding balance of your TD Credit Card Account at the time of diagnosis can be paid in full, up to $25,000.

Life – if you were to die, the outstanding balance on your TD Credit Card Account at the time of death can be paid in full, up to a maximum of $25,000.

Dismemberment – if you suffer a covered dismemberment, the outstanding balance on your TD Credit Card Account at the time of the loss can also be paid in full, up to a maximum of $25,000.

Accidental Death at 66 – at age 66, accidental death coverage begins and all other coverages end. If you experience an accidental death, the outstanding balance on your TD Credit Card Account at the time of death can be paid in full, up to a maximum of $25,000.

Additional coverages with TD Balance Protection Plus

If you are hospitalized for at least 24 hours, the disability requiring hospitalization coverage can pay one monthly benefit on your eligible outstanding balance to your TD Credit Card Account. If you are hospitalized for more than 30 consecutive days, this benefit can also pay the eligible outstanding balance, up to a maximum of $25,000, on your TD Credit Card Account.

Your spouse will be covered for all benefits available to you as the Primary Cardholder, except involuntary unemployment coverage and loss of self-employment income coverage. Your spouse does not have to be a cardholder, authorized user or even a TD customer to be covered. The definition of a spouse is the person who is lawfully married to you, or the person who has been living with you for at least one year and is publicly represented as your spouse.
