There has been some recent discussion on the web about this topic, about your logo not being your brand. Although this may be true, I haven t seen any clarification of the differences between brand , identity and logo . I wish to rectify this.

What is a logo? – A logo identifies a business in its simplest form via the use of a mark or icon.

To explain this in more detail, let’s start at the top – the brand.

Branding is certainly not a light topic – whole publications hundreds of books have been written on the topic, however to put it in a nutshell you could describe a ‘brand’ as an organisation, service or product with a ‘personality’ that is shaped by the perceptions of the audience. On that note, it should also be stated that a designer cannot “make” a brand – only the audience can do this. A designer forms the foundation of the brand.

Many people believe a brand only consists of a few elements – some colours, some fonts, a logo, a slogan and maybe some music added in too. In reality, it is much more complicated than that. You might say that a brand is a ‘corporate image’.

The fundamental idea and core concept behind having a ‘corporate image’ is that everything a company does, everything it owns and everything it produces should reflect the values and aims of the business as a whole.

It is the consistency of this core idea that makes up the company, driving it, showing what it stands for, what it believes in and why they exist. It is not purely some colours, some typefaces, a logo and a slogan.

As an example, let’s look at the well known IT company, Apple. Apple as a company, projects a humanistic corporate culture and a strong corporate ethic, one which is characterised by volunteerism, support of good causes involvement in the community. These values of the business are evident throughout everything they do, from their innovative products and advertising, right through to their customer service. Apple is an emotionally humanist brand that really connects with people – when people buy or use their products or services; they feel part of the brand, like a tribe even. It is this emotional connection that creates their brand – not purely their products and a bite sized logo.

For a more thorough understanding of branding, in simple terms, I recommend Wally Olin’s: The Brand Handbook which I quote is “an essential, easy-reference guide to brilliant branding .

Here are 8 simple steps on how to set up anonymous access for SharePoint 2010/2013/2016 publishing sites. Even though, the screenshots below are taken from SharePoint 2010 server, the administration GUI is the same for SharePoint 2010, 2013 and 2016.

1. Starting in Central Administration, under Application Management, click on the Manage web applications.

2. Make sure you select the site you want to enable anonymous access and click on the Authentication Providers icon.

3. On the Authentication Providers pop-up window click on the Default zone.

4. Under Edit Authentication, check Enable anonymous access and click Save.

5. Going back to Web Application Management click on the Anonymous Policy icon.

6. Under Anonymous Access Restrictions select your Zone and set the Permissions to None – No policy and click Save.

7. Now, web application will allow anonymous access to be set. So, navigate to your top level site collection for the web application. Click the Site Actions Site Settings. Under Users and Permissions click Site permissions.

That s all, folks! If you followed these steps properly you should have now Anonymous Access enabled.

I also found at stage 8 that I did not have the Anonymous Access option in the Site Permissions page.

This was because I had extended a web application for anonymous access in the Internet zone, but SharePoint for some reason had extended a DIFFERENT web application to the one I had selected. So when I accessed my new URL (for the anonymous site) I was actually seeing the wrong site collection. Everything looked correct in Central Admin, though.

I ended up unextending the web application (using the drop-down on the Delete option in the Web Applications management page of Central Admin, and selecting Remove SharePoint from IIS Web Site), and then re-extending it again into the internet zone. The second time it worked properly.

For those who are experiencing trouble on step 8, make sure you are accessing the site from the home site not the central administration portal . Also you need a user with elevated rights.

DIY Eyeglasses Cleaning Solution

By now you may or may not have realized that for almost every name brand cleaning product available on the market, there is a DIY alternative that you can make yourself at home. The expensive cleaning solution you buy for your eyeglasses is no exception. You will be surprised at how easy it is to make your own.

Ingredients:

  • Empty travel sized spray bottle
  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Liquid dish soap
  • Water

You can find travel-sized spray bottles in the travel section of the cosmetics department of stores such as Walmart. I paid less than $1 for mine.

Rubbing alcohol can be found in the first aid section. A large bottle is about $1.

For this recipe I used blue Dawn dish soap because it is so handy for making other homemade cleaners. but you could probably use any brand.

Fill the spray bottle 3/4 full with rubbing alcohol. Add two small drops of dish soap.

Fill the bottle the rest of the way up with tap water. If you have really hard water you might want to consider using distilled water instead. A gallon of distilled water costs less than $1.

Place the lid on the container and shake gently. If you shake it too hard the dish soap will become too sudsy.

Use the finished product the same way you would use any eyeglasses cleaner. After spraying the solution on the lenses of the glasses, wipe gently with a soft cloth.

That’s it! So easy to make and so inexpensive. My 7-year-old son who has to wear eyeglasses was very excited to now have his own personal bottle of cleaning solution for his glasses.

The 100 people on 2015 s Most Creative People in Business list have achieved impressive breakthroughs across a wide swath of industries: finding a possible cure for Ebola, using drone technology to help save endangered animals, modeling jet engines with 3-D printers.

None of these breakthroughs came from resting easy on outdated ideas or settling into familiar ruts. And yet, even this illustrious group admits to getting stuck and actively seeking grist for the mill. So we put the following question to the group: Where or from whom do you seek out inspiration? What do you do when you re in a rut? And most importantly, how do you keep new ideas flowing? Here s what some of them had to say if you try them out yourself, one each day of the work week, you ll have almost a month of options to help spark some creative new ideas of your own.

Before I started working on Minecraft, we would figure out new games by going on small holidays. We used to go to Berlin. They have these really great around-the-clock Internet cafes, and we d just work on something. We d also attend Game Jams, where you re given just random things and have limited time to produce a game. It s quite often that you are forced to think of something that works within the theme and, like I said before, I don t know where I m going and try to make it fun during this 32- or 48-hour Game Jam. You either produced crap or finished something interesting, and the interesting thing would end up in a pile. Then when we would actually need to start a launch project, we would look back in the pile.

    Most creatives probably tremble at the thought of creating a business plan, and most likely keep pushing it to the back burner until eventually they need one and throw something together that isn t complete. I m going to show you an easier way to go about creating your business plan, with basic steps that shouldn t be too daunting, if you take them one at a time.

    So, what is a business plan?

    A business plan is meant to guide your business in the right direction and document your thoughts and ideas for your business. It s a structural tool that can keep you, your employees and your business on the correct path. The first purpose of a business plan is to identify the aspirations of the business. Second, it s needed to determine if these aspirations are feasible in the current economy. Third, your business plan is needed to outline the steps you will take to reach your main objective. When I create my business plans, I like to lay it all out there first, and then start to remove pieces that are irrelevant. Think of your business plan as writing a book; you ve determined the ending, but now you need to fill in how you will reach that desired ending. You will want to be able to hand this business plan over to investors, peers, banks, attorneys, etc, so it s important to keep a defined look. But, since we are creatives, don t be afraid to play with the layout and colors, just don t get too crazy! Keep it readable, clean and professional.

    The basic elements of a business plan

    1. Executive Summary this is a one-page nutshell of your business. It includes the background behind your business, your mission, your vision and your tagline/message (if you have one). Keep it short and to the point. The rest of the business plan will go into much more detail.

    2. Target Customers/Ideal Clients this is where you will explain who your business is targeting, who your ideal clients are; their personalities, what they like to do, how old they are, their income level, how much they are willing to spend on your products and/or services. A survey is definitely a good idea to help gather information on your ideal client.

    3. Competition/Competitive Advantage this is where you will detail who your competitors are, what their strengths and weaknesses are, their business structure, and your competitive advantage, or what makes your idea better/different than theirs.

    4. Human Resources if needed, this is where you will document what staff you will need to run your business, what their skills need to be, how much experience, how much you can afford to pay them, etc. I did not need this section on my business plan, because I do not plan on having any staff in the near future. When the time comes, I will definitely add this section to my business plan. It would be wise to add an intern description here, if you plan on having an intern soon. This would layout the groundwork for what they would be responsible for.

    5. Vendors/Supplies this is where you will determine what outside sources will be needed to run your business. Are there any products that you must purchase on a weekly basis (jewelry supplies, paper) or do you use certain products for your clients (USB drives, cards, shipping, boxes/packaging materials)? Put all of these items here, their costs, what category they fall under (supplies, client gifts, packing/shipping, etc). You will need these for you financial plan later, but this section will detail each of the costs.

    6. Marketing Plan this is where you will show how to get your products and/or services in front of your ideal clients. What social media profiles are they on, are they bloggers, do they read certain blog, do they attend conferences? All of these things will help you figure out where, when and how to find your perfect customer. Your marketing plan is actually an entirely different document outside of your business plan, but laying out the general ideas here is great.

    7. Operations this is where you document how to get the job done in the most efficient way. What are your routines for your projects? What order do you follow from the first time you talk to the client/customer to when the client/customer has the final product delivered to them? Describe your operations as if you were teaching 5,000 people how to work at your company. Document everything.

    8. Financial Projections this is where you determine how much money you need to open/run your business and where you will get this money from. Most creative businesses are able to start their companies on smaller budgets, because they tend to not need real estate, and already own the large equipment needed to get the business going. Put your financial forecast on here; how many products do you want to sell, how much do each of your products cost, what is the yearly total? How much did you spend on supplies? What is your profit for the year? You want to be able to show an investor why and how your business is going to make money, so be realistic.

    Now what?

    I recommend taking the business plan one item at a time. Schedule a time every Sunday where you tackle a part of the business plan. Or, if you are feeling really ambitious one night, tackle a couple of them. Either way, don t stress yourself out. If you aren t in a business planning mood that day, then don t do it. Plan time when you can concentrate and your brain is able to think long-term.

    Some tips:

    Write the business plan in your own voice. No need to be stuffy, you are a creative and the person you are presenting this business to will already know that. Creatives are great at creating their own unique voices and styles, so make sure you show that here.

    Keep your business plan versatile. It is very likely that it will change as your business grows, so be sure to document these changes.

    Stick to it! You should know your business plan inside and out, almost like a very long elevator pitch. When you make decisions for your business, you should take your business plan into account.

    Designing a Business Plan for Your Creative Business

    Most creatives probably tremble at the thought of creating a business plan, and most likely keep pushing it to the back burner until eventually they need one and throw something together that isn t complete. I m going to show you an easier way to go about creating your business plan, with basic steps that shouldn t be too daunting, if you take them one at a time.

    So, what is a business plan?

    A business plan is meant to guide your business in the right direction and document your thoughts and ideas for your business. It s a structural tool that can keep you, your employees and your business on the correct path. The first purpose of a business plan is to identify the aspirations of the business. Second, it s needed to determine if these aspirations are feasible in the current economy. Third, your business plan is needed to outline the steps you will take to reach your main objective. When I create my business plans, I like to lay it all out there first, and then start to remove pieces that are irrelevant. Think of your business plan as writing a book; you ve determined the ending, but now you need to fill in how you will reach that desired ending. You will want to be able to hand this business plan over to investors, peers, banks, attorneys, etc, so it s important to keep a defined look. But, since we are creatives, don t be afraid to play with the layout and colors, just don t get too crazy! Keep it readable, clean and professional.

    The basic elements of a business plan

    1. Executive Summary this is a one-page nutshell of your business. It includes the background behind your business, your mission, your vision and your tagline/message (if you have one). Keep it short and to the point. The rest of the business plan will go into much more detail.

    2. Target Customers/Ideal Clients this is where you will explain who your business is targeting, who your ideal clients are; their personalities, what they like to do, how old they are, their income level, how much they are willing to spend on your products and/or services. A survey is definitely a good idea to help gather information on your ideal client.

    3. Competition/Competitive Advantage this is where you will detail who your competitors are, what their strengths and weaknesses are, their business structure, and your competitive advantage, or what makes your idea better/different than theirs.

    4. Human Resources if needed, this is where you will document what staff you will need to run your business, what their skills need to be, how much experience, how much you can afford to pay them, etc. I did not need this section on my business plan, because I do not plan on having any staff in the near future. When the time comes, I will definitely add this section to my business plan. It would be wise to add an intern description here, if you plan on having an intern soon. This would layout the groundwork for what they would be responsible for.

    5. Vendors/Supplies this is where you will determine what outside sources will be needed to run your business. Are there any products that you must purchase on a weekly basis (jewelry supplies, paper) or do you use certain products for your clients (USB drives, cards, shipping, boxes/packaging materials)? Put all of these items here, their costs, what category they fall under (supplies, client gifts, packing/shipping, etc). You will need these for you financial plan later, but this section will detail each of the costs.

    6. Marketing Plan this is where you will show how to get your products and/or services in front of your ideal clients. What social media profiles are they on, are they bloggers, do they read certain blog, do they attend conferences? All of these things will help you figure out where, when and how to find your perfect customer. Your marketing plan is actually an entirely different document outside of your business plan, but laying out the general ideas here is great.

    7. Operations this is where you document how to get the job done in the most efficient way. What are your routines for your projects? What order do you follow from the first time you talk to the client/customer to when the client/customer has the final product delivered to them? Describe your operations as if you were teaching 5,000 people how to work at your company. Document everything.

    8. Financial Projections this is where you determine how much money you need to open/run your business and where you will get this money from. Most creative businesses are able to start their companies on smaller budgets, because they tend to not need real estate, and already own the large equipment needed to get the business going. Put your financial forecast on here; how many products do you want to sell, how much do each of your products cost, what is the yearly total? How much did you spend on supplies? What is your profit for the year? You want to be able to show an investor why and how your business is going to make money, so be realistic.

    I recommend taking the business plan one item at a time. Schedule a time every Sunday where you tackle a part of the business plan. Or, if you are feeling really ambitious one night, tackle a couple of them. Either way, don t stress yourself out. If you aren t in a business planning mood that day, then don t do it. Plan time when you can concentrate and your brain is able to think long-term.

    Some tips:

    Write the business plan in your own voice. No need to be stuffy, you are a creative and the person you are presenting this business to will already know that. Creatives are great at creating their own unique voices and styles, so make sure you show that here.

    Keep your business plan versatile. It is very likely that it will change as your business grows, so be sure to document these changes.

    Stick to it! You should know your business plan inside and out, almost like a very long elevator pitch. When you make decisions for your business, you should take your business plan into account.

A pair of interlocking antlers — presumably from the feared Wendigo itself — form the “W” in the agency’s name.

    Illustrator and graphic designer Katsy Garcia whipped up this simple but effective business card concept for her own personal branding.     These business cards from Confetti Studio combine two powerful elements — punchy orange card stock and gold embossed metallics — to a create a mesmerizing and modern effect. One side of the card is completely covered in gilded speckles, while the other side displays the agency’s logo and contact information — also gilded. They fittingly call the end result “cardfetti.”

    Buenos Aires-based agency Tricota found an interesting way to highlight the two sides of their business: perforated cards that split in half. Splashes of overlapping patterns and colors appear on one side, and Bruining’s contact information appears on the reverse in a clean sans serif font.     Most creatives probably tremble at the thought of creating a business plan, and most likely keep pushing it to the back burner until eventually they need one and throw something together that isn t complete. I m going to show you an easier way to go about creating your business plan, with basic steps that shouldn t be too daunting, if you take them one at a time.

    So, what is a business plan?

    A business plan is meant to guide your business in the right direction and document your thoughts and ideas for your business. It s a structural tool that can keep you, your employees and your business on the correct path. The first purpose of a business plan is to identify the aspirations of the business. Second, it s needed to determine if these aspirations are feasible in the current economy. Third, your business plan is needed to outline the steps you will take to reach your main objective. When I create my business plans, I like to lay it all out there first, and then start to remove pieces that are irrelevant. Think of your business plan as writing a book; you ve determined the ending, but now you need to fill in how you will reach that desired ending. You will want to be able to hand this business plan over to investors, peers, banks, attorneys, etc, so it s important to keep a defined look. But, since we are creatives, don t be afraid to play with the layout and colors, just don t get too crazy! Keep it readable, clean and professional.

    The basic elements of a business plan

    1. Executive Summary this is a one-page nutshell of your business. It includes the background behind your business, your mission, your vision and your tagline/message (if you have one). Keep it short and to the point. The rest of the business plan will go into much more detail.

    2. Target Customers/Ideal Clients this is where you will explain who your business is targeting, who your ideal clients are; their personalities, what they like to do, how old they are, their income level, how much they are willing to spend on your products and/or services. A survey is definitely a good idea to help gather information on your ideal client.

    3. Competition/Competitive Advantage this is where you will detail who your competitors are, what their strengths and weaknesses are, their business structure, and your competitive advantage, or what makes your idea better/different than theirs.

    4. Human Resources if needed, this is where you will document what staff you will need to run your business, what their skills need to be, how much experience, how much you can afford to pay them, etc. I did not need this section on my business plan, because I do not plan on having any staff in the near future. When the time comes, I will definitely add this section to my business plan. It would be wise to add an intern description here, if you plan on having an intern soon. This would layout the groundwork for what they would be responsible for.

    5. Vendors/Supplies this is where you will determine what outside sources will be needed to run your business. Are there any products that you must purchase on a weekly basis (jewelry supplies, paper) or do you use certain products for your clients (USB drives, cards, shipping, boxes/packaging materials)? Put all of these items here, their costs, what category they fall under (supplies, client gifts, packing/shipping, etc). You will need these for you financial plan later, but this section will detail each of the costs.

    6. Marketing Plan this is where you will show how to get your products and/or services in front of your ideal clients. What social media profiles are they on, are they bloggers, do they read certain blog, do they attend conferences? All of these things will help you figure out where, when and how to find your perfect customer. Your marketing plan is actually an entirely different document outside of your business plan, but laying out the general ideas here is great.

    7. Operations this is where you document how to get the job done in the most efficient way. What are your routines for your projects? What order do you follow from the first time you talk to the client/customer to when the client/customer has the final product delivered to them? Describe your operations as if you were teaching 5,000 people how to work at your company. Document everything.

    8. Financial Projections this is where you determine how much money you need to open/run your business and where you will get this money from. Most creative businesses are able to start their companies on smaller budgets, because they tend to not need real estate, and already own the large equipment needed to get the business going. Put your financial forecast on here; how many products do you want to sell, how much do each of your products cost, what is the yearly total? How much did you spend on supplies? What is your profit for the year? You want to be able to show an investor why and how your business is going to make money, so be realistic.

    I recommend taking the business plan one item at a time. Schedule a time every Sunday where you tackle a part of the business plan. Or, if you are feeling really ambitious one night, tackle a couple of them. Either way, don t stress yourself out. If you aren t in a business planning mood that day, then don t do it. Plan time when you can concentrate and your brain is able to think long-term.

    Some tips:

    Write the business plan in your own voice. No need to be stuffy, you are a creative and the person you are presenting this business to will already know that. Creatives are great at creating their own unique voices and styles, so make sure you show that here.

    Keep your business plan versatile. It is very likely that it will change as your business grows, so be sure to document these changes.

    Stick to it! You should know your business plan inside and out, almost like a very long elevator pitch. When you make decisions for your business, you should take your business plan into account.

Other methods: Go outside and walk, listen to something, smoke cigarettes, tell jokes.

    This is the best post I ve seen about unique business cards. Usually there are a few ones but with the same concept applied over and over. Definitely a good source for innovative ideas. I think my favorite is the Divorce Lawyer one just from the simple concept of it.
