There is confusion today between the essential elements and purposes of authentic communication and the latest technology.

Many stories written about today’s so-called “digital revolution” would lead us to assume that all of the new technological gadgets and online tools are magically changing us into better communicators.

In the frantic rush by many professional marketing, PR and advertising people to connect with core audiences, they are confusing technology for effective communications.

Companies and organizations believe that a Twitter account, Facebook page or new website will automatically make them more attuned to their audiences and that they will have a greater (and thus, louder) “voice” in the marketplace. There is a belief that new tools will make them more influential; that their opinions, products and services can be presented in exaggerated, unrealistic, or absolute terms; and that their audiences and the public will listen.

The reality, however, is that the answer is no, not necessarily true and not necessarily for the long term.

What the digital revolution has done is temporarily warp the expectations of companies, organizations, audiences and the public about communications in the digital era. Technology has not changed the enduring need for clear communications or for the exchange of credible news. What technology has altered is both the transmittal and mode of content rather than altering the purpose of communication itself, and therein lies confusion. Twitter limits use to 140-characters. There are times when a 2,000-word story would provide clearer communication.

The Core of Good Communications

Authentic, true communication results when its purpose is to impart a thought or opinion with the hope of a favorable response or positive feedback regardless of technology. It is the human desire to share news and information and, in the case of business, to create and maintain a customer.

Storytelling is universal and at the core of communications. We have grown up with stories, fables, legends. Stories are woven into the fabric of all cultures.

There is immense opportunity for business and organizations to step in and engage audiences through the timely appeal and influence of authentic news storytelling. While outdated and overworked tactics, such as press releases, are generally marketing masquerading as news, corporate storytelling provides substance, offers new meaning and gives a greater understanding to the public about products and services.

you can follow lew’s post for measuring the wall voltage. should be in the

120VAC range or so. be very careful that you do not touch the probes’ metal ends or you’ll get zapped. this will give you an idea if your AC source is in a good range or if it is ‘browning out’ a bit by being undervoltage.

current is measured in amps. most residential circuits are going to be in the 15A range (meaning if you try to draw more than that, the circuit breaker will trip). measuring AC current is usually done by using an induction probe that goes around the power cord while the device is in operation. according to kirkoff’s law (am i remembering that correctly?), you can not measure AC current by putting the multimeter in series with the device under test (let alone that trying to do that would be hella stupid and potentially lethal)

T4D gave you very good advice. BE CAREFUL

If you are in Europe, be twice as careful. or don’t even think of doing this.

Also, if your meter is not autoranging be VERY sure that you have it set up correctly before taking the voltage measurement. or. you will be buying a nice new meter.

Why do you you want to do this? The readings will fluctuate based on several factors.

If you are concerned about poor quality of AC supply from the wall, you might want to look a a power conditioner, or something similar.

since most handheld meters are limited to 10 amps, I’d recommend getting an Amp Probe. it’s basically a clamp that hooks up to your multimeter to give you a correct amp reading. one like this

And remember. it’s not the volts that kill, it’s the amps.

FWIW. I think Radio Shack still sells dedicated testers for this sorta thing. you could probably get one from a real electrical supply house too. the kinda place where electricians buy their tools.

ohms law doesnt work with AC. and there are several other problems with your assertion. knowing the power consumed is no easier than determining the current – the number written on the label is a max power consumption and you have to know which operating conditions must be met in order for those ratings to apply. and you have to know the power factor (which is 1 in a DC circuit, but NOT 1 in an AC circuit under almost all circumstances)

Of course, usually the term measuring wall current is a misnomer. Voltage is usually being measured. A decent auto-ranging digital multimeter is best for that; investing in a Fluke is not cheap but well worth it in the long run, for that and all sorts of guitar electronics measurements.

The actual current depends of course on what’s plugged in and running. That’s what pulls current from the wall. Using the formula is theoretically correct but will probably be wrong because the wall voltage is varying all the time – you can’t assume it’s 117 or 120. Meters that measure current have a built-in shunt , but must be measured in-line , which can be dangerous. I wouldn’t recommend it unless you’re a tech. There are other ways to measure current with a voltmeter, but they’re best left to techs and engineers.

Why? One night I was troubleshooting my Princeton. My B+ was way high,Off the charts? I took a reading of the wall jack and it was 132 ACV As where the rest of the outlets in the house. ALL 132 ACV. the next morning when I got up. I checked agian. It was 120 ACV. And My B+ was back in range.

It was said before, but it bears repeating, the only reading you can get from a wall receptacle while it’s live without breaking the circuit is AC voltage. There are three holes on a receptacle, the two slots that are next to each other are the hot and neutral inputs and the distinct, rounder hole is your ground. you want to measure the hot and neutral.

As far as current goes, that’s a whole different ballgame. To measure current, you need to break the circuit on one side (neutral or hot) and put the probes in series.

There is one quote in here that is VERY important and props to JMoose for mentioning it: . it’s not the volts that kill, it’s the amps. Remember kids, 1/10th of an amp can kill you given the right situation. that’s 100 mA in the right situation (not much, is it?). Most household circuits (in the US anyways) are 15A or 20A unless you’re talking circuits for ranges, washers/dryers and the like.

Ohm’s law is pretty much the universal way of figuring out the resistance, current and voltage in a circuit. It becomes a little complex when comparing AC to DC because AC stands for alternating current which means current flows both ways in the circuit. DC is direct current which means it only flows in one direction. Ohm’s law can be used for AC as well as DC.

Soujurn is correct with the formulas, but for calculating power, a power factor does need to be applied (which is what tone4days was addressing).

    Timeline

    Screen division (zones)

    Sequencing

    The sequencer is essentially a simple and effective way to serially set the play list order of all the timelines. This is done using simple drag and drop operation.

    Scheduler

    Set your timelines to play at any day and anytime. Use the schedular to set the exact start and stop times. A graphical interface is used to get a summery of all future playlists and easily resolve conflicts.

    Advertising engine

    Build your own Advertising network, provide to your customer proof of play, visual analytics and more. Each customer can be managed through the sub-account manager.

    Resources

    Resources include any media content which loads onto your digital SignagePlayer. These include video, sound, signage components and scenes. Also provided are social network portals that retrieve shared files. These portals include social networks as well as our own built in digital signage social network.

    Components

    The components include many valuable tools that you can use to enrich your signage presentation.     Becoming a Digitally Mature Enterprise

    MIT Sloan Management Review and Deloitte’s1 2015 global study of digital business found that maturing digital businesses are focused on integrating digital technologies, such as social, mobile, analytics and cloud, in the service of transforming how their businesses work. Less-mature digital businesses are focused on solving discrete business problems with individual digital technologies.

    The ability to digitally reimagine the business is determined in large part by a clear digital strategy supported by leaders who foster a culture able to change and invent the new. While these insights are consistent with prior technology evolutions, what is unique to digital transformation is that risk taking is becoming a cultural norm as more digitally advanced companies seek new levels of competitive advantage. Equally important, employees across all age groups want to work for businesses that are deeply committed to digital progress. Company leaders need to bear this in mind in order to attract and retain the best talent.

    The following are highlights of our findings:

    Digital strategy drives digital maturity. Only 15% of respondents from companies at the early stages of what we call digital maturity — an organization where digital has transformed processes, talent engagement and business models — say that their organizations have a clear and coherent digital strategy. Among the digitally maturing, more than 80% do.

    The research and analysis for this report was conducted under the direction of the authors as part of an MIT Sloan Management Review research initiative in collaboration with and sponsored by Deloitte University Press.

    The power of a digital transformation strategy lies in its scope and objectives. Less digitally mature organizations tend to focus on individual technologies and have strategies that are decidedly operational in focus. Digital strategies in the most mature organizations are developed with an eye on transforming the business.

    Maturing digital organizations build skills to realize the strategy. Digitally maturing organizations are four times more likely to provide employees with needed skills than are organizations at lower ends of the spectrum. Consistent with our overall findings, the ability to conceptualize how digital technologies can impact the business is a skill lacking in many companies at the early stages of digital maturity.

    Employees want to work for digital leaders. Across age groups from 22 to 60, the vast majority of respondents want to work for digitally enabled organizations.

    A humorist once said that the most powerful form of communication was the exchange of gossip between two people. Communication the act of sharing information and news is a primal need, regardless of culture, and as old as humankind.

    There is confusion today between the essential elements and purposes of authentic communication and the latest technology.

    Many stories written about today’s so-called “digital revolution” would lead us to assume that all of the new technological gadgets and online tools are magically changing us into better communicators.

    In the frantic rush by many professional marketing, PR and advertising people to connect with core audiences, they are confusing technology for effective communications.

    Companies and organizations believe that a Twitter account, Facebook page or new website will automatically make them more attuned to their audiences and that they will have a greater (and thus, louder) “voice” in the marketplace. There is a belief that new tools will make them more influential; that their opinions, products and services can be presented in exaggerated, unrealistic, or absolute terms; and that their audiences and the public will listen.

    The reality, however, is that the answer is no, not necessarily true and not necessarily for the long term.

    What the digital revolution has done is temporarily warp the expectations of companies, organizations, audiences and the public about communications in the digital era. Technology has not changed the enduring need for clear communications or for the exchange of credible news. What technology has altered is both the transmittal and mode of content rather than altering the purpose of communication itself, and therein lies confusion. Twitter limits use to 140-characters. There are times when a 2,000-word story would provide clearer communication.

    The Core of Good Communications

    Authentic, true communication results when its purpose is to impart a thought or opinion with the hope of a favorable response or positive feedback regardless of technology. It is the human desire to share news and information and, in the case of business, to create and maintain a customer.

    Storytelling is universal and at the core of communications. We have grown up with stories, fables, legends. Stories are woven into the fabric of all cultures.

    There is immense opportunity for business and organizations to step in and engage audiences through the timely appeal and influence of authentic news storytelling. While outdated and overworked tactics, such as press releases, are generally marketing masquerading as news, corporate storytelling provides substance, offers new meaning and gives a greater understanding to the public about products and services.

    The late, legendary corporate leader Steve Jobs of Apple knew the secret to influential communications and how to connect with audiences. Standing on a stage, Jobs would hold a new iPhone or iPad, and share a revealing and very human story about his personal excitement when he realized how the new product might help us to be more creative and successful. He talked about the product’s value to us, not about himself or Apple. We connected with his excitement and flocked to buy his “i”-products.

    What does a corporate or organization’s news story look like? Simply stated, it is a story that focuses on the value and benefit of services and products to consumers, clients, and audiences.

    Steve Kayser a communications consultant in Cincinnati, Ohio recently wrote, “Storytelling content is the new advertising, marketing and PR. It’s a harsh new reality all businesses and employees have to face. They can still spend a fortune for advertising, marketing and PR campaigns, and get retro-returns on their investment. Or, they can do what people resonate with – storytelling.”

    The benefit is that your company or organization can become a trusted source and resource to actively exchange news and information provided that it is consistently balanced, accurate and real news, and resists the narcissistic compulsion to promote and market.     Top architecture schools in the US Canada

    The US has a total of 14 universities ranked among the world’s top 50 for architecture, and a further 8 ranked within the top 100. Aside from the three featured in the top 10 – MIT, University of California, Berkeley, and Harvard University – other US universities in the top 30 include Columbia University (11 th for architecture; 14 th in the overall QS World University Rankings®), the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA, 18 th for architecture; 37 th in the world rankings), the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (25 th for architecture; 63 rd in the world rankings), Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech, 26 th for architecture; 107 th in the world rankings), Cornell University (27 th for architecture; 19 th in the world rankings) and Stanford University (30 th for architecture; 7 th in the world rankings).

    Four of Canada’s leading architecture schools are also ranked within the top 100 worldwide. These are the University of British Columbia (20 th for architecture; 43 rd in the world rankings), the University of Toronto (36 th for architecture; 20 th in the world rankings), McGill University (51-100 for architecture; 21 st in the world rankings) and the University of Waterloo (51-100 for architecture; 169 th in the world rankings).     Top architecture schools in Europe

    A total of 32 European institutions are ranked among the world’s top 100 for architecture, with 11 of these based in the UK. As well as UCL and the University of Cambridge – both among the world’s top 10 universities for architecture – other UK representatives include Cardiff University (29 th for architecture; 123 rd in the world rankings), the University of Salford (39 th for architecture; 701+ in the world rankings), the University of Sheffield (44 th for architecture; 69 th in the world rankings) and Oxford Brookes University (48 th for architecture; 379 th in the world rankings).

    Outside of the UK, Germany claims four of the world’s top 100 architecture schools, led by Technische Universität München which ranks 46 th for architecture (54 th in the world rankings). Up next is Sweden, with three entrants, of which the leader is KTH, Royal Institute of Technology in 21 st place (110 th in the world rankings).

    Four more European countries are each home to two of the world’s top universities for architecture. These include Italy. which boasts Politecnico di Milano in 14 th place (229 th in the world rankings, and Spain. whose Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya appears in joint 22 nd place (337 th in the world rankings). Switzerland is home to ETH Zurich, which ranks among the top 10, and also Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL). in 24 th place (17 th in the world rankings). The Netherlands offers Delft University of Technology in 3 rd place, and the Eindhoven University of Technology in 28 th (147 th in the world rankings)

    Top architecture schools in Asia

    Three Asian universities – Singapore’s National University of Singapore, China’s Tsinghua University and Japan’s University of Tokyo – are ranked within the global top 10 for architecture. A further 20 Asian institutions feature in the top 100.

    Excluding those already mentioned, five more leading architecture departments are claimed by mainland China, including Tongji University (16 th for architecture; 393 rd in the world rankings) and Shanghai Jiao Tong University (41= for architecture; 104 th in the world rankings). Hong Kong brings a total of four schools to the table, of which The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (12 th for architecture; 162 nd in the world rankings) and the University of Hong Kong (HKU, 13 th for architecture; 28 th in the world rankings) are the highest ranked.

    Both Japan and Malaysia have three schools in the running, while Taiwan and Thailand offer one apiece. Heading west of mainland Asia, Israel also has one entrant: Technion – Israel Institute of Technology (190 th in the world rankings).

    Top architecture schools in Australia New Zealand

    Eleven universities in Australia are featured in the architecture subject rankings, led by the University of Melbourne (15 th for architecture; 33 rd in the world rankings), followed closely by the University of Sydney (17 th for architecture; 37 th in the world rankings) and the University of New South Wales (UNSW, 22 nd for architecture; 48 th in the world rankings).

    Also within the top 50 are RMIT University (304 th in the world rankings), the University of Queensland (43 rd in the world rankings), the University of Newcastle (257 th in the world rankings) and Monash University (70 th in the world rankings).
