Challenge: To help cut costs and time to market, most web hosting companies use one of three widely distributed control panels. Generally, doing so means that their features are identical to those of other companies using the same software, and higher level support is outsourced to a third party. When a security gap is discovered or an improvement is needed, an

outside vendor must be contacted for a solution. That vendor would then contact the developer, who in most cases is located in another country. If the developer feels the request has merit, they would implement a solution and release a patch. Due to so many parties being involved in the process, the amount of time from the initial request to a final solution could be days if not months.

Solution: We have developed our own control panel. and assembled all of the software powering our servers from the ground up. Many of its features are unique, and are not available anywhere else. Our blazing fast webmail has more features than most desktop email clients, and includes proprietary spam filtering technology which keeps junk mail away while

making sure good messages are delivered at virtually the same time they are sent. A dedicated team of in-house developers maintains our software, with a large portion of their time being devoted to security enhancement and new product development. When a new feature is created or an upgrade is released, our proprietary Rapid Update utility instantly updates every server at virtually the same time. This technology enables us to perform software upgrades within minutes across our entire network of servers (click here to see the upgrades we have done within the past year). The ability to provide real time solutions in direct response to market demands gives us an unmatched advantage over our competition. We always stand behind our product, and are committed to making it better, one idea at a time.

Sites built on cloud services such as Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure can now automatically and transparently redirect user traffic from their bare domain name to the www version of their sites. Simply add a http redirection record in the edgedirector control panel and all further record maintenance is automatic. The edgedirector http redirection service is geodns enabled and hosted on multiple distributed redundant edgedirector servers

Affiliate marketers and traffic aggregators can use chained redirects crossing domains as a means of referral masking to protect the source of their user traffic.

dns services for geo-targetted global load balancing
dns services for automatic distributed failover

server health is constantly monitored in parallel from multiple data centers, when a server fails or the server requests a pause, the dns records are dynamically altered to point to other balanced servers or hot spare standby servers

dns records are dynamically selected to respond to queries with the server address configured for the geographic location as determined by the address of the incoming query

global load balancing, failover and hot spare features can be combined to achieve the best result possible for high availability and lowest network latency

global load balancing can be configured on CNAME records for third party cloud and cdn traffic management

DNS is a core internet protocol that enables your web presence by translating human readable domain names to network routable addresses. DNS availability is critical to delivering your audience to your site on demand around the clock.

Our managed authoritative dns hosting services deliver the DNS uptime and availability that are crucial to your success.

The edgedirector.com authoritative dns server platform is scalable, flexible, and responsive. It delivers accurate dns responses quickly and propagates dns zone record changes immediately to all dns servers. No more waiting for dns updates. It is authoritative dns service at its best.

The service is further enhanced with an advanced dns feature set to help you stay at the front of the internet pack.

automated maintenance failover
When your servers are unavailable, your visitors are pointed to a information page hosted on edgedirector.com servers. The pointing mechanism is specially designed to inform and reassure human users while also avoiding search engine penalties. Even if all of your servers in every data center are unavailable, your users will still receive some reassurance that you will be back.

wildcard dns record support
Users can be directed to a default server when the hostname does not exist in your dns zone. No more lost users from typing errors like ww .example.com.

global dns load balancing
Use dynamic geoip mapped dns records to point your users to the closest healthy server to improve server response latency. Turn your existing servers into a custom content delivery network with an international footprint.

geoip content delivery mapping
A content delivery network can also be geolocation aware. Dynamic dns answers are used to point your users at the geolocation designated server for their geographic place of origin. You can easily deliver geotargeted content from single or multiple content distribution servers.

monitored server failover
edgedirector.com monitors your servers and tailors dns answers automatically to include only servers that are currently available in the defined set. Designated subscriber administrators are automatically notified of outages for corrective action. Once the server is back online, it will again be included in the server pool.

hardware load balancing compatible
You may designate any ip address as the published endpoint in your dns records. This includes the public interfaces of single or redundant hardware load balancers and caching appliances in your data center. Combine global load balancing with local load balancing for the best server response time and greatest resilience to service interruptions.

These advanced dns based capabilities work together to provide your users with the best service possible. A set of globally distributed geolocation aware servers becomes as easy to manage as a single server and as powerful as any CDN. Imagine a no-compromise CDN custom built for your unique requirements with complete control in your hands.

Change Your Domain Name. for Better Search Ranking

When you first registered your domain name. did you get the one you wanted or settle for what was available? Settling for a less than ideal name was the case for a lot of us who put our local business on the web in the past ten years or so .

We are now at the beginning of the “Not Com Revolution,” with hundreds of new domain name endings (also called TLDs — Top Level Domains) coming available. Many of these have keywords in them. and some even include a location or geo-identifier .

This “revolution” represents an enormous opportunity for local business to take advantage of a better name and. potentially. better search engine rankings along with it .

В этой статье, I provide details on these new TLDs and how they can help improve your standing in search .

Geo-based New TLDs

There are several new geo-based TLDs available (or coming available soon) to which you could move your website. Например, if your business is in New York City. you may consider buying a .NYC domain name and moving your site to it .

If your current domain name includes the location — such as “KeywordNewYork.com” or “NewYorkKeyword.com” — then you could move to a shorter. more desirable name that ends in .NYC .

Other examples of geo-based domain name endings are .Miami. London. and .Berlin. More are coming soon. and you can see the list of those currently available at the nTLDStats веб-сайт.

Some of the new geo-based TLDs have certain requirements. which your business must meet to be eligible to purchase a domain name. To use the .NYC TLD. Например, you must reside in or have a business address in one of the five boroughs .

This requirement is reasonable. and one of which search engines are aware. В результате, your website might see a search engine ranking benefit if you move to one of these new geo-based TLDs .

A website with the domain. “Furniture.nyc,” may rank well when Google users from the New York City area search for “furniture.” Even though the query does not include a geo-related keyword (“furniture” versus “new york furniture”). the site will rank well because the search engines recognize the geo-related domain name ending .

Non-geo-related TLDs

If you do most of your business in a location that’s not currently available in a new TLD. including the geolocation at the beginning of the domain name should help .

Например, if you are in the construction business. and your current domain name is something like “NewYorkConstruction.com,” then you may be able to find your ideal name. such as “NewYork.Construction.”

There are a great many keywords in the new TLD list. including .construction. plumbing. florist. limo. и другие. Domain speculators and investors have already purchased many of the domains associated with larger cities. but cities with populations of less than 100,000 (or even 250,000 ) are generally available .

Обычно, when you move from a longer. more undesirable domain name to a new keyword-rich. shorter name. there won’t be any problems with traffic to your website. If done properly. redirecting users and search engine crawlers to the new domain won’t affect search engine rankings adversely either .

The process of moving is relatively simple. and involves the following steps:

  • Backup your website;
  • Transfer the content to the new domain name (after setting up web hosting for it);
  • Crawl your current website. using a crawler such as Screaming Frog SEO Spider ;
  • Make a list of all of the pages on the old domain name:
  • Настройка 301 Permanent Redirects from the old pages to the pages on the new domain:
  • Contact site owners that link to your old website and let them know that you’ve moved to a new domain name;
  • Tell the search engines that you’ve moved to a new domain name (typically done in the search engines’ Webmaster Tools area);
  • Encourage the search engines to crawl the sitemap file on the old domain name. which will cause them to recognize that the pages have moved .

Take a look at the new TLDs and see if there isn’t a better. shorter domain name that includes your location or keywords in the ending. Moving isn’t a big task. but can help your website attract more search engine traffic and get better rankings in the long run .

Recovering the Active Directory Domain Services – Best Practices #active #directory #domain

#

This blogpost is the third in a three-part series on AD (Active Directory) administration best practices. Have you ever had the horrible realization that you just deleted the wrong computer account from the domain? Or have you ever reset a service-account password for a mission-critical application and the password reset broke an entire application suite and had to rollback? And, worse, you didn’t save the old password? Bad moments like these happen to IT pros just like you. The questions are how to recover and do it quickly. Thankfully, you CAN restore service quickly. All you need are the right tools. And I am sure you’d agree that restoring service quickly is A LOT more pleasant than updating your resume!

Earlier in this series, I touched on the importance of Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) and the role that properly architecting a robust, resilient and highly available service can play in the modern data center. Even with the best design and architecture, things can and will go wrong. Unfortunately, it just so happens that these issues always seem to arise at either 3 a.m. or just as you’re walking out the door to go home for the day. Simply following a few of the best practices laid out in my earlier posts is not enough to fix things. Instead, it is paramount to have an out-of-band availability solution for AD DS, your infrastructure’s most mission-critical service.

Traditional Domain Controller restore scenarios

Backup and recovery of an AD Domain Controller (DC) has traditionally been a tedious process that involves backing up the system state of the server. It’s a best practice to backup two DCs from each domain, one of which should be an Operations Master role holder, but NEVER the RID Master. When it comes to recovery, you go through the process of rebuilding a brand new server (MUST BE THE SAME EXACT NAME) and restoring the system state, which includes the SYSVOL and actual AD files (ntds.dit ), edb.chk and all transaction logs). Then you determine if a Non-Authoritative restore is good or if you need to go through an Authoritative Restore process.

  • For a Non-Authoritative restore process: This restores the DC back to the restore point chosen and then allows normal replication to occur and update the DC to the latest iteration.
  • For an Authoritative restore process: First you must go through an Authoritative Restore and then go one step further. Authoritative restores effectively update all objects in the domain, making the newly restored DC the authoritative copy. Each of the other DCs are then updated via standard replication.

This process can get so complicated that it very quickly makes the steps outlined earlier even MORE important. Remember to only give the exact permissions that are required to do the job, do not OVER-permission. Do leverage the lag site for delaying replication of changes. In addition, do leverage RODCs for branch/satellite office locations. Steps can and should be taken to mitigate as much risk as possible. Bottom line? Always adhere to best practices!

To simplify things, as long as there is a single surviving DC in the infrastructure, you should build a new DC (a virtual machine) and promote via the normal procedures. This allows AD replication to update it to the current state.

Native Microsoft tools (ldp.exe or Get-ADObject and Restore-ADObject ) do not make it easy to recover individual User Objects, let alone the associated attributes!

Veeam’s here to help!

For years, Veeam has been aiding the virtualization community with tools that help make the job easier! Veeam Explorer for Active Directory simplifies the entire process associated with traditional Domain Service Restoration by allowing browsing of the AD database to locate containers, objects and their associated attributes. This is all possible through a single-pass, image-level backup! Yep, that’s right, 100% agentless Backup Recovery!

How’s it done? It’s simple, during the creation of your Veeam Backup Job, select Enable application-aware processing and pass through the Guest OS (operating system) credentials that are an Administrator on the server. In this case for a DC, you’ll need to pass Domain Admin credentials. Through the backup process, Veeam will leverage Volume Shadow Copy (VSS ) to place the DC in a consistent state. You can check the application logs on the DC during the time of backup for validation.

Figure 1: Guest processing settings within backup job

When the backup job is complete and you run through the Restore Wizard, just choose Microsoft Active Directory and the associated restore point you’d like to restore from.

Figure 2: Application Item Recovery Wizard

Maybe you’re looking to recover an entire object or container such as a user, computer or organizational unit? Just right-click on the object and restore back to the original location. Are you looking to restore individual attributes, like a service account password or perhaps a PowerShell script that went rogue and updated all Domain Users email addresses? Within the same Restore Wizard, simply restore selected attributes and whether or not you need to replace or merge the changes.

Note: Not all object attributes are visible through Active Directory Users and Computers (dsa.msc ). Don’t be shy about checking out ADSI Edit if you’re unfamiliar with this information.

Figure 3: Veeam Explorer for Microsoft Active Directory Restore Wizard

Figure 4: Veeam Explorer for Microsoft Active Directory Restore Wizard

Testing, testing and more testing!

One commonly overlooked best practice is to test the application restoration process. Veeam makes this simple through SureBackup. SureBackup leverages the patented vPower technology to power on your VMs from their compressed and deduplicated backup image within a fenced off lab environment (Veeam creates a separate VMware vSwitch and / or equivalent Hyper-V Private Virtual Network ). This lab is a great way test to see if your DC backups are in a good place and it’s also a fantastic application test bed. Consider it a best practice to fire up all associated VMs within an application suite and test in an automated fashion to leverage the data you have. CIOs love that this is easy to audit and provides complete visibility into the availability of the environment.

Conclusion

AD Domain Services is one of the most mission-critical applications in the environment. All aspects of application communication and authentication processes require AD. IT professionals are faced with challenges on a daily basis. Availability should not be one of those challenges! This best practices series is intended to aid you in the successful design, implementation and ongoing availability of your AD DS.

Veeam continues to provide high-speed recovery for all AD Services through its Veeam Explorer for Microsoft Active Directory . which is even available in Veeam Backup FREE Edition. Veeam strives to provide valuable tools that help make IT professionals’ lives easier. It’s in our blood.

I just wanted to thank your support team for their excellent service this afternoon in helping me to recover from a problem by restoring an old copy of my site. The service was prompt, courteous and effective and has saved me from a lot of trouble, if the data had been lost. Great job!

You should teach some lessons on customer relations to other companies because your support is just great, Freehostia. Keep up the good work!

How to set your hostname and domain name correctly

Posted on 18.01.2012 by Kim N. Lesmer.

This tutoriale describes how to set your hostname, domain name and fully qualified domain name properly. Both a mail server and a web server needs to by run with the right hostname and domain name.

A mail server or a web server must have a fully qualified domain name such as www.example.com or mail.example.com.

Mail servers such as Postfix and Exim automatically uses the hostname that you assign to the server when greeting remote mail clients and servers, unless you manually configure another name.

I am going to use Debian GNU/Linux as a reference in this article, if you are running something else, you might find your files located elsewhere.

Hostname and Domain Name

On the Internet, the terms hostname and domain name are often used interchangeably and this can cause a bit of confusion.

Sometimes the term hostname refers to the name you choose for your system (a nickname if you like). At other times the term hostname actually refers to the domain name of your system.

Hostnames are used differently by various naming systems, NIS, DNS, SMB, etc. and so the meaning of the word hostname will vary according to the naming system in question, which in turn varies by type of network. A hostname meaningful to a Microsoft NetBIOS workgroup may be an invalid Internet hostname. When presented with a hostname and no context, it is usually safe to assume that the network is the Internet and DNS is the hostname’s naming system.

Host names are typically used in an administrative capacity and may appear in computer browser lists, active directory lists, IP address to hostname resolutions, email headers, etc. They are human-readable nicknames, which ultimately correspond to unique network hardware MAC addresses. In some cases the host name may contain embedded domain names and/or locations, non-dotted IP addresses, etc.

When we talk about the hostname as a nickname for your system, you can view your hostname by issuing the command:

The nickname is a name you choose. If for example you are running Linux on your laptop, you might call it mylaptop . Or if you have two different computers at home and one of them is running Linux, you might call it linux1 .

When we talk about the hostname as a domain name it is then a name that identifies one or more IP addresses like wikipedia.com identifies the IP address 208.80.152.2.

The domain name consists of two parts and every domain name ends in a top-level domain (TLD) name, which is always either one of a small list of generic names (three or more characters), or a two-character territory code based on ISO-3166 (there are few exceptions and new codes are integrated case by case). Top-level domains are sometimes also called first-level domains. Examples. com. org. net, etc.

The main purpose of a domain name is to provide a name to a numerically addressed Internet resources.

You can see your domain name by issuing the command:

Fully qualified domain name

The fully qualified domain name (FQDN) consists of two parts and it is a combination of the nickname of your computer and your domain name. A FQDN consists of three words and two dots such as mylaptop.example.com

You can see your FQDN by issuing the command:

Configure everything correctly

Lets say you want to name your server mybox. and that you have registered the domain example.com with the static IP address 208.77.188.166, then /etc/hosts needs to be configured as follows:

If your IP address is assigned to you by a DHCP server, then /etc/hosts is configured as follows:

Next you need to set your FQDN in your /etc/hostname file. You can do that by running the following command:

Now the file /etc/hostname will contain the words mybox.example.com

Could not reliably determine the server’s fully qualified domain name

If you just need to work locally on Apache or on your private LAN and doesn’t own a domain, you can get rid of the above warning from Apache by fixing your ServerName. On Debian it is done in /etc/apache2/httpd.conf

A final note

RFCs mandate that a hostname’s labels may contain only the ASCII letters ‘a’ through ‘z’ (case-insensitive), the digits ‘0’ through ‘9’, and the hyphen. Hostname labels cannot begin or end with a hyphen. No other symbols, punctuation characters, or blank spaces are permitted.

Fixing SQL Server 2005 after demoting the server from Active Directory –

#

Let me preface this by stating that I am more of a UNIX guy and this is making me pull my hair out. I have a Windows 2003 server that is running SQL Server 2005 for VMware’s Virtual Infrastructure system. The theory was to make this system an Active Directory controller but we have decided to hold off on that for now. I demoted the server out of Active Directory land (no longer a controller or a member of any Active Directory). Unfortunately when I do that, the SQL Server service will no longer start.

When I go into the SQL Server Configuration Manager and try to change the Log On to the Administrator account or one of the built in accounts I get the error “No mapping between account names and security IDs was done”.

How can I fix SQL Server so that it’s not thinking about Active Directory permissions and account IDs?

asked Jul 14 ’09 at 22:25

I haven’t spun up a test instance to reproduce this on my own box, but it looks like there are three registry values stored at the key below that refer to SIDs of groups created by the SQL Server 2005 install:

The values are AGTGROUP, FTSGROUP, and SQLGROUP. The groups that had the SIDs used to populate these values were (substituting in your server computer’s name and SQL instance name):

From what I can see (again, w/o repro’ing this myself), you need to create these groups for this server, then obtain the SIDs for the new groups and put them into the registry. It looks like a “repair” of the SQL Server install would do this. Have a look at this article from Microsoft Connect: http://connect.microsoft.com/SQLServer/feedback/ViewFeedback.aspx?FeedbackID=202561

Search that article for the phrase “One or more SQL security groups were somehow deleted” and read thru the workaround there. It looks like clearing out the old groups and running setup in repair mode will do what you want. I’d trust that better than trying to re-create them by hand like some blog posts and forum posts I’ve found suggest.

Having said all that, backup, at minimum, that portion of the registry and your databases before you start changing things. Having good backups makes things “just work”. smile
