    The course has a long standing history of delivering the social work degree going back to the late 1980’s. We have a small and friendly team with a great wealth of experience covering a range of areas of expertise. We have approximately 25 students in each year group and this enables us to have small teaching groups and offer a high level of tutorial and academic support to students.

    Students also benefit from regular sessions presented by service users and carers groups. Service user and carer input on the programme is integral to its design and delivery for which it has been commended.

    Current social work practitioners assist in the delivery of modules by virtue of the well-established relationship between the college and social work agencies.

    Students complete placements within social work settings of 70 days in year 2 and 100 days
    in year 3. The majority of placements are in Worcestershire and will often require students to
    be able to travel to and whilst on placement.

    The course is validated by Birmingham City University (BCU). On completing the programme, students
    receive their degree from BCU and are eligible to apply for entry to the register as a social worker
    with the Health and Care Professions Council.

    What is STEM Education?

    With all the acronyms that determine hundreds of different areas of education, it is easy to confuse them all. Since 2001, the letters STEM have been a normal part of educational vocabulary.

    The acronym STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. This program was started by Judith A. Ramaley. the former director of the National Science Foundation’s education and human-resources division. This approach to education is designed to revolutionize the teaching of subject areas such as mathematics and science by incorporating technology and engineering into regular curriculum by creating a “meta-discipline.”

    There is more; STEM Education attempts to transform the typical teacher-centered classroom by encouraging a curriculum that is driven by problem-solving, discovery, exploratory learning, and require students to actively engage a situation in order to find its solution.

    Integration of Curriculum

    The four parts of STEM have been taught separately and most of the time independent from each other for years. By adopting the STEM philosophy Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics all play an integral part in the teaching of the whole. The science, engineering, and mathematics fields are made complete by the technology component that provides a creative and innovative way to problem solve and apply what has been learned.

    Many STEM education program participants are using highly specialized professional applications at very early ages. Programs that are usually reserved for college-level classes such as computer animation and CAD programs are being implemented in high school classrooms across the country as part of the STEM education initiative.

    Since its implementation, critics have questioned the program’s ability to teach all students equally.     Our Role and Responsibility

    In recent years, there has been a significant decline in the number of college students choosing majors in science or technology related fields. Much of this has to do with poor preparation for the classes during high school and the intense work required outside of the lecture setting in places like laboratories. Students have chosen easier majors and courses of study in place of taking on the fields that they wanted to enter due to poor preparedness. If the graduation rates continue with this trend, there will be a workforce shortage in areas of engineering and science fields.

    The United States needs to be more competitive and build new standards for our students. The National Science Foundation “estimates that 80% of the jobs created in the next decade will require some form of math and science skills.” In order for our children to see the advancements in their generations that we saw in ours, it is important that they have a well-balanced education that includes STEM elements, as well as, traditional classes in the Arts. STEM education is designed to teach the “whole” student and in turn will make them more successful members of society.

In the guide, we’ve compiled a number of our online articles that are relevant to undergraduate and graduate curricula covering the arts, arts administration, arts research, cultural policy, economics, and related topics.

    Join us for a one-hour Research: Art Works grant guidelines workshop. A presentation by NEA Office of Research Analysis staff will be followed by a Q A session. The National Endowment for the Arts Office of Research Analysis makes awards to support research that investigates the value and/or impact of the arts, either as individual components of the U.S. arts ecology or as they interact with each other and/or with other domains of American life.

    Research: Art Works is a National Endowment for the Arts grant program supporting projects that seek to investigate the value and impact of the arts for individuals and communities. The proposed projects may use quantitative, qualitative, or mixed-methods approaches. Application guidelines for the present round of funding are now available on the NEA website. How does playing sports affect people mentally and emotionally?

    These are just a few of the questions that sport psychologists try to answer. Sports psychology is a branch of psychology that focuses on how individuals are affected by playing sports as well as how to improve a person’s mindset in order to excel at sports. A sport psychologist understands that individuals who play sports must be healthy in both their bodies and minds in order to succeed. At times, some athletes need help overcoming psychological issues that do not allow them to play to their full potential. Reducing stress and extreme anxiety before events often leads to better performances by athletes.

    Sport psychologists often work with several different types of athletes, from amateurs to professionals. Athletes might seek out these professionals on their own, or coaches might seek the help of these types of psychologists when they notice that the athletes under their tutelage seem to be off. According to one study, the majority of Olympic athletes have used several different types of psychological treatments to reduce anxiety before performances.

    What Does a Sports Psychologist Do?

    Sport psychologists typically work in facilities that cater to and accommodate athletes of all different shapes, sizes, and ages.

    High schools and colleges might hire a sport psychologist to talk with and counsel their student athletes, for instance. Even if a person precepts more than one student, each relationship tends to be handled in a one-to-one manner,” says Barbara Stevens Barnum, author of “The Role of the Preceptor: A Guide for Nurse Educators.” In addition to being a teacher and a mentor, a preceptor also serves as a role model, leader, influencer, evaluator, socialization agent and protector to the apprentice nurse.

    The preceptor is instrumental for a student nurse to successfully link nursing theory to application in a clinical setting, according to researchers at the University of Calgary. The preceptor and student nurse work together as one unit, with the nurse carefully observing the preceptor in action and performing tasks under the preceptor’s watchful eye.

    Nurses who are asked to be preceptors are typically experienced RNs who are enthusiastic about the nursing profession and have a desire to teach. The preceptor should have a BSN degree at minimum, and preferably a master’s or higher degree in nursing .

    Good candidates for preceptors are unit-based nurse managers, nursing department heads, nursing education department personnel and advanced practice nurses, according to the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN).

    Overview

    This program is designed for those individuals who plan, administer, and deliver training and education to adults in the workplace, in non profit organizations, in college settings, and in educational institutions. It is of interest to those considering new career possibilities in positions involving the training, education, and professional development of adults.

    The curriculum is practical and theoretical so that the student is exposed to different learning contexts and methodologies, and the practicalities involved with program assessment, planning, development, delivery and evaluation.

    Throughout the program emphasis is placed on assisting the student in acquiring the knowledge base necessary to demonstrate the competencies required of an adult educator/trainer in today’s society.

    All courses are available through an online delivery mode.

    The Institute for Performance and Learning, Canada’s leading association of workplace learning professionals, sets the standards for learning and development in Canada. The Institute recognizes that Seneca’s Adult Education/Staff Training Program addresses the competency categories for the training and development industry outlined in the Institute’s Competencies for Training and Development Professionals (Competencies).     Master s Program in Mathematics

    The Department of Mathematics offers two master of science degrees and two master of education degrees in mathematics. These programs are designed to prepare students for doctoral research, and teaching in colleges and public schools, and to provide the mathematical background needed to pursue careers in applied mathematics, statistics, computer science, business, industry, and many other areas.

    Admission Requirements: Applications to all graduate programs are handled by The Graduate College. In addition to university requirements, for unconditional admission, the department requires:

    • A preferred score of 900 on the verbal and quantitative portions of the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) general test.
    • An undergraduate GPA of 2.75 (4.0 scale) in the last 60 hours leading to a bachelor s degree.

    On rare occasion, a student may be granted conditional admission if his/her grade point average is less than a 2.75. This student will be required to meet conditions stipulated by the department.

    Financial Aid: Mathematics graduate students are encouraged to work as graduate instructional assistants. The stipends for these assistantships are comparable to the national norms and generally require teaching two courses per semester. There are also graduate scholarships available.
    To apply for an assistantship, please fill out the Employment application form and submit to the Math Department as well as:

    • Cover letter stating your intent.
    • Official copy of your transcripts showing all college work.
    • Current vita.
    • 3 letters of recommendation.
    • An essay of approximately 500 words describing your background and professional goals, which should include a rationale for pursuing your chosen graduate degree program and teaching philosophy.

    Additionally all international students need to pass the Test of Spoken English with a score of at least 50 within the first year of employment.

    In the higher education master’s program, we develop professionals who plan, operate and improve the effectiveness of higher education. This is accomplished by researching the historical, theoretical and philosophical aspects of the field.

    We provide course work and practical experience opportunities leading to a Master of Education degree in Higher Education. The degree prepares you for entry-level and mid-level administrative positions in colleges and universities that include, but are not limited to, work in:

    Our curriculum focuses on higher education theory and practice. Specializations are available in student affairs administration, community college leadership and general administration.

    A unique program feature is the Master’s Cohort in College Student Personnel. Each academic year, a cohort of 10 to 12 students is selected to take courses on a full-time basis while working in a graduate assistantship in UNT’s Division of Student Affairs. This cohort format, which lasts two years, is offered in addition to our standard master’s program.

    Forensic Investigator Education Requirements

    Different employers may have different educational requirements for forensic investigators, or forensic science technicians.     Forensic Investigator Career Information

    Forensic investigators work on cases involving a person’s death and determine whether the death was a homicide, accident or by natural causes. Responsibilities may include organizing case records for the deceased, documenting evidence, reporting the circumstances surrounding the death, obtaining family history and reviewing medical records. These professionals may also be dispatched to death scenes to collect evidence, such as drugs, weapons, fingerprints or poisons, and to transport the body to the medical examiner’s office.

    Forensic investigators must conduct interviews to obtain information about the person’s physical appearance and personal habits. Job duties may also include notifying family members of deaths and arranging for them to identify the bodies. They also research missing person reports and compare physical descriptions with bodies that come in. Other responsibilities that a forensic investigator may have include preparing death certificates, assisting in performing autopsies and operating office equipment.

    From 2014-2024, jobs for all forensic science technicians–which includes forensic investigators–are expected to increase by a much-faster-than-average rate of 27%, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). In 2015, forensic science technicians earned an annual median salary of $56,320.

    University of Phoenix Accreditation Hits Snag As Panel Recommends Probation

    A team of accreditors reviewing the University of Phoenix has recommended that the school be placed on probation, the university’s parent said Monday, jeopardizing the reputation of the nation’s largest for-profit college and its ability to collect federal student aid dollars crucial to the school’s bottom line.

    The Apollo Group, which owns the 319,000-student university, said in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission that a regional accreditation review team determined that the University of Phoenix had “insufficient autonomy” from its corporate parent -– a development that may prevent the university from achieving its “mission and successful operation.” The Apollo Group controls the leadership of the University of Phoenix board.

    Apollo Group representatives said the company intends to appeal the recommendation, and will work with accreditors to resolve outstanding issues. The company said its management structure was “customary” for parent companies and subsidiaries.

    The probation recommendation is not final. The board of the Higher Learning Commission, a Midwest college accrediting body, will likely make a final decision in June.

    But the announcement signals that university accreditors are tightening reviews of for-profit colleges, which experienced explosive enrollment growth during the Great Recession as millions sought to improve their fortunes with a college degree. All colleges must be accredited in order to remain eligible for federal student aid. Six regional accreditors collect fees from schools to consider them for approval, part of a peer-review process that dates back more than a century. Reviewers certify such things as academic courses and quality, and the accreditation standards are used in part to determine whether students can transfer credits from one institution to another.

    Members of Congress in recent years have criticized the accreditation system as a rubber-stamp regulatory process that does little to protect taxpayer investments in higher education.

    For-profit colleges such as the University of Phoenix get much of their revenue from federal aid programs, including subsidized student loans and Pell grants. The University of Phoenix last year received 84 percent of its revenue from federal financial aid programs, totaling more than $3.2 billion, according to company securities filings. The school’s logo and advertisements can be seen on television commercials and highway billboards across the nation.

    The for-profit college industry has come under fire in recent years, as the Obama administration, state attorneys general and lawmakers have questioned high tuition, low graduation rates and high rates of student loan defaults at many schools. More than 22 percent of students at for-profit colleges defaulted on federal loans within three years — nearly twice the rate of students at public institutions, according to federal data.

    The University of Phoenix had a three-year default rate of more than 26 percent, according to the most recent federal data.

    In the past year, regional accreditors have cracked down on some for-profit institutions, including Ashford University, which in seven years morphed from a 300-student Catholic school in Iowa into a massive online institution serving nearly 90,000 students. Regional accreditors on the West Coast denied Ashford’s bid for accreditation last year. arguing that the school had low graduation rates and was spending much more money on new student recruitment than educating current students.

    The Higher Learning Commission has taken no formal action against the University of Phoenix. School officials said in the SEC filing on Monday that a review team found that the university’s board was unable to “assure the university’s integrity” and “make decisions necessary to achieve the institution’s mission and successful operation.” The Apollo Group elects members of the University of Phoenix board of directors. The university’s 11-member board includes four members who also serve on the parent company’s board or senior leadership team.

    “We believe that it is neither remarkable nor improper for a parent corporation to exercise appropriate influence of its wholly-owned subsidiary,” Apollo Group said in the SEC filing. The University of Phoenix is responsible for more than 90 percent of the Apollo Group’s revenue.

    “We are confident that all concerns expressed by the (accreditors) can and will be successfully addressed in due course,” Mark Brenner, a spokesman for the Apollo Group, wrote in an emailed statement. He added that the draft report showed University of Phoenix “was found to be in compliance with substantially all criteria associated with academic matters.”

    The Higher Learning Commission is a private body, and is not required to release reports. The group did not make its findings public.

    “In keeping with policy and practice, the commission will not speculate on possible outcomes of the evaluation,” the organization said in a written statement .

    If the Higher Learning Commission board decides to place the University of Phoenix on probation, the university would have up to two years to remedy problems. The school would remain accredited while on probation, meaning it would not be disqualified from receiving federal aid dollars.

    Apollo Group executives mentioned the likelihood of negative findings from accreditors in a conference call with investors last month. The company wrote in Monday’s public filing that if the school were placed on probation, its reputation “could be adversely affected, which in turn may negatively impact (the) ability to recruit and enroll students and to recruit and retain faculty and staff.”

    As the Obama administration and Congress have stepped up scrutiny of for-profit colleges, University of Phoenix enrollment dropped to 356,000 in August from more than 460,000 two years earlier, according to company securities filings. A quarterly filing last month said enrollment was 319,000.

    The Homeland Security Defense Coalition and the Homeland Security University College project was established in October of 2001 to provide a single source for high level education and training in the field of counter-terrorism. The HSDC HSU project programs will lead to a certificate, diploma, or degree in one comprehensive program.

    The Homeland Security Defense Coalition and the Homeland Security University College project has been a labor of love post 9/11/01. The Homeland Security Defense Coalition is a non-profit organization managed by 40 volunteers who have sought non-governmental funding through no less than two dozen foundations, none of which have been able to provide project funding. Our volunteers have provided nine years of their time in hopes of eventually joining us on a full-time career basis. This great team has provided their professional expertise in counterterrorism and business administration to build our infrastructure so that we are ready at the starting gates to begin this worthwhile Homeland Security University College project.

    We have recruited and brought together national and international experts in anti-terrorism and counter-terrorism, who have developed, designed and will be teaching our seminars and courses. Most are recently retired former or present FBI agents, federal law enforcement agents, criminal investigators, emergency and disaster planning professionals, lawyers, US Border Patrol personnel, US Customs professionals and several currently in the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

    Consolidating the best national security training and education courses and offering them through one source will enable private and government agencies the opportunity to send their personnel for homeland specialized homeland security training and education.

    This project has been 14 years in the planning and is designed to ensure the highest level of modern up-to-date course content. Courses have and will be continually reviewed and up-dated to remain current in content and consistent with current trends and threats.

    Consistent with its heritage since its founding in 1770, the College of Charleston retains a strong liberal arts undergraduate general education curriculum. The Liberal Arts and Sciences General Education requirement serves all students, regardless of major, and assures that students are exposed to a breadth of intellectual inquiry distributed across seven areas of the curriculum: History, Humanities, Mathematics and Logic, Foreign Language, Natural Science, Social Science, and Writing.     The Career and Technical master’s degree is designed for licensed or qualified prospective CTE teachers at the middle or high school level.     Candidates seeking a Master of Education degree from Concordia University-Portland should be aware that completing the master’s program does not lead to state certification or licensure. While in some cases coursework may apply towards renewal of a teacher’s license, a Master of Education degree does not ensure initial teaching/administrative licenses or licensure for add-on endorsements.

    In addition to meeting the specific requirements of their chosen degree program, successful completion of the Concordia Portland Online Master of Education degree requires candidates to meet and demonstrate the general program objectives including:

    • An understanding of leadership contributions made by all teachers in the classroom, the school, the district, and the profession
    • Skills in developing, implementing, and assisting curricular and instructional plans that integrate disciplines, apply current educational research findings, encourage parental involvement, consider students’ current developmental levels, and exhibit sensitivity to individual student differences and cultural backgrounds
    • Skills in the application and integration of new technologies to enhance the teaching and learning processes

    All candidates in the Concordia University-Portland MEd programs will complete a required capstone research experience. Candidates will select to complete either an Action Research course, a Thesis course, or a Practitioner Inquiry course.

    During the Action Research course, candidates will learn more about action research methodology, complete final edits of the literature review, and design a complete action research proposal including data collection methods and analysis approaches. The developed proposal will NOT be implemented with students/participants during the course.

    The Action Research experience provides candidates with requisite skills and means to pursue the transformative practice called “Action Research” in their classroom, school, district or other work environment. The design of the capstone project closely aligns with current classroom realities, with district and school requirements, and the needs of teachers and students.

    The Thesis option offers candidates the opportunity to investigate, in depth, a topic in the field of education. The candidate will explore relevant literature and present a thesis following the procedure established by the College of Education.

    The Practitioner Inquiry course focuses on the reflective acts of the candidate as an educator seeking to improve teaching practice. Premised in the self-study research methodological traditions (Samaras, 2011), Practitioner Inquiry provides the opportunity to reflect on teaching practice and generate improvements based on classroom observation. Practitioner Inquiry focuses on the educator and her/his own practices, developing skills of inquiry, observation, reflection, and action in teachers.

    Institutions of Higher Learning Undergraduate and Graduate Degrees

    Most VA education and training benefits may be used at institutions of higher learning, including four-year universities, community colleges, and entities offering advanced degrees.

    Payments are based on the number of classes you attend. For example, a college considers:

    • 12 hours or more full time
    • 9 11 hours three-quarter time
    • 6 8 hours half time
    • Less than six hours as reimbursable at a rate not to exceed the tuition and fees charged for the course or courses

    For graduate-level training, the training time is determined by the college. For example, if a two- hour class is considered full time in a graduate program at your school, VA will pay you the full-time rate.

    Degree-granting institutions of higher learning participating in the Post-9/11 GI Bill Yellow Ribbon Program agree to make additional funds available for your education program without an additional charge to your GI Bill entitlement. Get more information in the Yellow Ribbon Program pamphlet or go online to the Yellow Ribbon Program page.

    The GI Bill will allow you to attend more than one college at a time, as long as the classes at both institutions count toward your degree, and the school granting your degree accepts the classes at the second school as part of your requirements. However, the GI Bill will not pay you to take the same classes twice, unless you receive a failing grade in a class that is a graduation requirement.

    The GI Bill can pay you for more than one degree. For example, it will pay you for a degree in Business and then for a second degree in Computer Science, or for an associates, bachelors, or masters degree in the same field. Once you have a degree, you could pursue another one, provided you have remaining entitlement on your GI Bill.

    Payments are issued monthly in arrears. For example, you receive the November payment in December. For the Post-9/11 GI Bill, the tuition and fees are paid directly to the school, the book stipend is paid to you at the beginning of the term, and the housing allowance is paid to you at the end of each month.

    What is Community Health Education?

    Community Health Education is an interdisciplinary social science designed to promote health and prevent disease, disability and premature death by educating individuals and communities to voluntarily change their behaviors, policies and practices. Community Health Education Specialists design, implement and evaluate health education and promotion programs at the individual, group, institutional, community and system-level to improve health knowledge, attitudes, skills and behavior. Employment of Community Health Educators is expected to grow by 21 percent from 2012 to 2022, which is faster than the average for all occupations. Growth will result from the rising cost of healthcare and the subsequent need for health promotion and disease prevention programs.     What careers might I choose?

    The program curriculum provides practical clinical experiences and experiential coursework to prepare students for careers in public or private agencies, local health departments, volunteer organizations, hospitals, health insurance companies, worksite/corporate health promotion and wellness programs, and a variety of community-based organizations and projects (such as smoking cessation programs, health and cancer associations, substance abuse agencies, nutrition interventions, HIV/AIDS prevention programs, and injury prevention initiatives). Some examples from area employers include:

    • Community program planning specialist (local health department)
    • Health and wellness coordinator (large corporation)
    • Grant writer/administrator (non-profit organization)

    10 places where anyone can learn to code

    Teens, tweens and kids are often referred to as “digital natives.” Having grown up with the Internet, smartphones and tablets, they’re often extraordinarily adept at interacting with digital technology. But Mitch Resnick, who spoke at TEDxBeaconStreet. is skeptical of this descriptor. Sure, young people can text and chat and play games, he says, “but that doesn’t really make you fluent.”

    Mitch Resnick: Let’s teach kids to code Fluency, Resnick proposes in this TED Talk. comes not through interacting with new technologies, but through creating them. The former is like reading, while the latter is like writing. He means this figuratively that creating new technologies, like writing a book, requires creative expression but also literally: to make new computer programs, you actually must write the code.

    The point isn’t to create a generation of programmers, Resnick argues. Rather, it’s that coding is a gateway to broader learning. “When you learn to read, you can then read to learn. And it’s the same thing with coding: If you learn to code, you can code to learn,” he says. Learning to code means learning how to think creatively, reason systematically and work collaboratively. And these skills are applicable to any profession as well as to expressing yourself in your personal life, too.

    In his talk. Resnick describes Scratch. the programming software that he and a research group at MIT Media Lab developed to allow people to easily create and share their own interactive games and animations. Below, find 10 more places you can learn to code, incorporating Resnick’s suggestions and our own.

    1. At Codecademy. you can take lessons on writing simple commands in JavaScript, HTML and CSS, Python and Ruby. (See this New York Times piece on Codecademy and other code-teaching sites, for a sense of the landscape.)

    2. One of many programs geared toward females who want to code, Girl Develop It is an international nonprofit that provides mentorship and instruction. “We are committed to making sure women of all ages, races, education levels, income, and upbringing can build confidence in their skill set to develop web and mobile applications,” their website reads. “By teaching women around the world from diverse backgrounds to learn software development, we can help women improve their careers and confidence in their everyday lives.”

    3. Stanford University’s Udacity is one of many sites that make college courses—including Introduction to Computer Science —available online for free. (See our post on free online courses for more ideas.)

    4. If college courses seem a little slow, consider Code Racer. a “multi-player live coding game.” Newbies can learn to build a website using HTML and CSS, while the more experienced can test their adeptness at coding.

    5. The Computer Clubhouse. which Resnick co-founded, works to “help young people from low-income communities learn to express themselves creatively with new technologies,” as he describes. According to Clubhouse estimates, more than 25,000 kids work with mentors through the program every year.

    6. Through CoderDojo ’s volunteer-led sessions, young people can learn to code, go on tours of tech companies and hear guest speakers. (Know how to code? You can set up your own CoderDojo!)

    7. Code School offers online courses in a wide range of programming languages, design and web tools.

    8. Similarly, Treehouse (the parent site of Code Racer) provides online video courses and exercises to help you learn technology skills.

    9. Girls Who Code. geared specifically toward 13- to 17-year-old girls, pairs instruction and mentorship to “educate, inspire and equip” students to pursue their engineering and tech dreams. “Today, just 3.6% of Fortune 500 companies are led by women, and less than 10% of venture capital-backed companies have female founders. Yet females use the internet 17% more than their male counterparts,” the website notes.

    10. Through workshops for young girls of color, Black Girls Code aims to help address the “dearth of African-American women in science, technology, engineering and math professions,” founder Kimberly Bryant writes, and build “a new generation of coders, coders who will become builders of technological innovation and of their own futures.”

    While we re at it: bonus! General Assembly offers a variety of coding courses at their campuses across the globe. Additionally, their free online platform, Dash. teaches HTML, CSS and Javascript through fun projects on a simple interface that is accessible from your web browser.
