List of Search Engines Listed by Types of Searches

Business search enginesThis page posting has been updated with the addition of some of the newer search engines. The original search engine page was dealing mainly with B2B and B2C search. However, with today s broad based Internet activity, and how it relates to various aspects of business usage, personal searches, and even internal intranet enterprise searches, we wanted to highlight some of the different search market segments.

This list of the various search engines, is posted here mainly for research and education purposes. We felt it is nice to be able to reference and have links to some of the different search engines all in one place. While the list below does not cover each and every search engine online, it does provide a broad list of most of the major search companies that are available. Also note that some of the search engine links have been redirected to other sites due to search buyouts, mergers, and acquisitions with other companies, along with changes with the search engines themselves (for example: search companies have changed brand names, different URLs, and links). You will also notice that some of the search websites go back a number of years. If you would like to read more about the details of any particular search engine, take a look at the Wikipedia Search Engines List article, and follow the links to each specific search engine for a descriptive overview. Some of the people search engines are very interesting at gathering information in one place. Find the person, distant relative, classmate, or friend from the past.

Note that each link opens into a new search window.

The best way to compare different search engine results, is to open search engines in multiple tabs in your web browser and quickly reference back to this page.

ShackF00 – Search Engines for OSINT and Recon, business search engines.#Business #search

ShackF00

Based on the title to this post, you re thinking, Awesome, Dave! Welcome to 2006! Well hang on there. There s an amazing number of awesome search facilities that can be useful when doing OSINT and recon work for pen testing. I ll list a lot of different sites that I have discovered and use regularly for both.

Google and Bing: These are the best known sites for these activities, and provide a lot of data. One cool feature many don t use is the Search Tools in Google Search and Image Search. After you submit your search, click the Search Tools button in the upper right. You can hone in on date ranges for results, and for images you can choose only faces, clip art, and others, as well. Lots of good query tools out there for these two, but SearchDiggity from the Bishop Fox guys rocks.

Business search engines

The Wayback Machine: I think most folks are aware of this these days, too, but it deserves to be mentioned. If you re looking for older versions of a site or data set, this is the place to grab it.

Google Groups or Yahoo Groups: Searching for gossip on companies or people posting stupid things that they shouldn t may lead you to one of these sites. I d say you ll be surprised by what you find there, but we all know that people just feel like they HAVE to share sometimes.

Bing vs. Google: For a comparison of the two search engines results, this is a great site, and may save you some time for quick keyword searches.

2Lingual: To search using two different languages simultaneously on Google, consider 2Lingual. Great results sometimes, especially if you re assessing an international organization or person who travels and works abroad.

Business search engines

Carrot2: Carrot2 is one of my new favorites. It provides some cool visualization options for searches, and also has great results.

Business search engines

iSeek: iSeek is another of my favorites currently, primarily due to its categorization column on the left-hand side after searching. You can drill down into phone numbers, locations, and other keywords detected very quickly.

Business search engines

International Search with Yandex (Russian) and Baidu (Chinese): For international targets, these sites turn up some fascinating results, and both have good search delimiters, too.

GlobalFileSearch: A quick way to search for files scanned across FTP services. Similar to the filetype: or ext: queries with Google, but may prove useful I ve found a few excellent results there.

Business search engines

NerdyData: This site rocks, especially when I am doing recon for Web app tests. You can search for code snippets buried in site pages, JavaScript, etc. IMMENSELY USEFUL. You can look for code, patterns in code, look specifically for meta tags, look only for blog keywords, etc. Awesomesauce.

Business search engines

Qwant: Qwant sometimes has interesting info, as it aggregates across traditional search, social media, shopping sites, and more traditional news.

If anyone has different engines and sites they use for this, I d love to hear about them, and I m sure others would too. Any comments with new sites, I ll vet and add to the post. Cheers!

We ve been working on the EchoSec beta and thought you might enjoy playing with it for OSINT. Our slide deck http://www.slideshare.net/kswannie/echo-sec-slideshare

This is a great tool to start a search, when you don t know anything but a location. Please feel free to give it a try.

I just had a GIAC Gold paper accepted on using OSINT for evaluating business partners. I use Search Diggity, Shodan, FOCA, and recon-ng.

When you know the general type of information you need it s great to use recon-ng to automate your searches. FOCA will let you search documents for metadata. It s useful to get version of internal software but will also search Shodan and look for software versions. Shodan is what I always use for initial screenings to see what ports are open. I check the sites I m responsible for as well as checking business partners and vendors. I focus on tools that don t touch the target.

You would not believe the lack of firewalls on internet facing systems. At work my group was talking about some control systems we have and we started wondering about the likelihood of finding them unprotected on the internet. I checked last night and found over 100,000 of the same type of system visible on Shodan. There is a lot of work to be done.

Improve your local ranking on Google – Google My Business Help, business

Improve your local ranking on Google

Local results appear for people who search for businesses and places near their location. They’re shown in a number of places across Maps and Search. For example, you’ll probably see local results if you search for “Italian restaurant” from your mobile device. Google will try to show you the kind of nearby restaurant that you’d like to visit. In the image below, Google uses local results to suggest some options.

You can improve your business’s local ranking by using Google My Business.

Can’t find your business? Improve your info.

You may find that your business doesn’t appear for relevant searches in your area. To maximize how often your customers see your business in local search results, complete the following tasks in Google My Business. Providing and updating business information in Google My Business can help your business’s local ranking on Google and enhance your presence in Search and Maps.

Enter complete data

Local results favor the most relevant results for each search, and businesses with complete and accurate information are easier to match with the right searches. Make sure that you’ve entered all of your business information in Google My Business, so customers know more about what you do, where you are, and when they can visit you. Provide information like (but not limited to) your physical address, phone number, and category. Make sure to keep this information updated as your business changes. Learn how to edit your business information

Verify your location(s)

Verify your business locations to give them the best opportunity to appear for users across Google products, like Maps and Search. Learn more about verification

Keep your hours accurate

Entering and updating your opening hours, including special hours for holidays and special events, lets potential customers know when you’re available and gives them confidence that when they travel to your location, it will be open. Learn how to edit your hours

Manage and respond to reviews

Interact with customers by responding to reviews that they leave about your business. Responding to reviews shows that you value your customers and the feedback that they leave about your business. High-quality, positive reviews from your customers will improve your business’s visibility and increase the likelihood that a potential customer will visit your location. Encourage customers to leave feedback by creating a link they can click to write reviews. Learn more

Add photos

Adding photos to your listings shows people your goods and services, and can help you tell the story of your business. Accurate and appealing pictures may also show potential customers that your business offers what they’re searching for. Learn more

How Google determines local ranking

Local results are based primarily on relevance, distance, and prominence. These factors are combined to help find the best match for your search. For example, Google algorithms might decide that a business that’s farther away from your location is more likely to have what you’re looking for than a business that’s closer, and therefore rank it higher in local results.

Relevance

Relevance refers to how well a local listing matches what someone is searching for. Adding complete and detailed business information can help Google better understand your business and match your listing to relevant searches.

Distance

Just like it sounds–how far is each potential search result from the location term used in a search? If a user doesn’t specify a location in their search, Google will calculate distance based on what’s known about their location.

Prominence

Prominence refers to how well-known a business is. Some places are more prominent in the offline world, and search results try to reflect this in local ranking. For example, famous museums, landmark hotels, or well-known store brands that are familiar to many people are also likely to be prominent in local search results.

Prominence is also based on information that Google has about a business from across the web (like links, articles, and directories). Google review count and score are factored into local search ranking: more reviews and positive ratings will probably improve a business’s local ranking. Your position in web results is also a factor, so SEO best practices also apply to local search optimization.

There’s no way to request or pay for a better local ranking on Google. We do our best to keep the details of the search algorithm confidential to make the ranking system as fair as possible for everyone.

Google, Searching Search Engines

Searching is one of the most popular activities on the internet. Search engines have become an essential part of everyone s lives. Here at Search Engine Land, we cover search engines not just from the search marketing perspective but also for search consumers. How can you search better? What cool new search tools are out there? What weird, wacky and wonderful things have emerged from the world of search? Read on to learn more on how Search Engine Land keeps you up-to-date on all the news and developments.

Is there anyone who hasn t heard of Google? The vast majority of searchers turn to Google. Indeed, Google defines searching to the degree that some people say they googled something as a synonym for searching.

Despite its dominance, Google s not alone in the search world. Its chief rivals are Yahoo and Microsoft s Bing search engine. Bing even has a few people saying they Bing It rather than Google It.

Search Engine Land tracks all these major search engines closely. To learn more about them, see our pages below:

There are even more search engines beyond the big players of Google, Yahoo and Bing. Search Engine Land keeps up with these for you, along with tips for using them better. Check out these major sections of our site below:

15 Educational Search Engines College Students Should Know About

After hours spent scrolling through Google and pulling up endless clickbait results, you re frustrated with the internet. You have a paper to write, homework to do and things to learn. You know you won t get away with citing Wikipedia or Buzzfeed in your research paper. Even the big news engines aren t scholarly enough. You need reputable sources for your homework, and you need them now.

With so many resources online, it s hard to narrow it down and find ones that are not only reliable and useful, but also free for students. We ve saved you the time and picked out our 15 best free search engines for research.

15 scholarly search engines every student should bookmark

1. Google Scholar

Google Scholar was created as a tool to congregate scholarly literature on the web. From one place, students have the ability to hunt for peer-reviewed papers, theses, books, abstracts and articles from academic publishers, professional societies, preprint repositories, universities and other scholarly organizations.

2. Google Books

Google Books allows web users to browse an index of thousands of books, from popular titles to old, to find pages that include your search terms. Once you find the book you are looking for, you can look through pages, find online reviews and learn where you can get a hard copy.

3. Microsoft Academic

Operated by the company that brings you Word, PowerPoint and Excel, Microsoft Academic is a reliable, comprehensive research tool. The search engine pulls content from over 120 million publications, including scientific papers, conferences and journals. You can search directly by topic, or you can search by an extensive list of fields of study. For example, if you re interested in computer science, you can filter through topics such as artificial intelligence, computer security, data science, programming languages and more.

4. WorldWideScience

5. Science.gov

Science.gov is operated and maintained by the Office of Science and Technical Information, the same department that collaborates on WorldWideScience.org. This search engine pulls from over 60 databases, over 2,200 websites and 200 million pages of journals, documents and scientific data. Search results can be filtered by author, date, topic and format (text or multimedia).

6. Wolfram Alpha

A self-described computational knowledge engine, Wolfram Alpha does not so much provide search results as it does search answers. Simply type in a topic or question you may be interested in, such as, What is the function of the pancreas? and the answer will show up without making you scroll through pages of results. This is especially handy for those in need of math help.

7. Refseek

With its minimalist design, Refseek doesn t look like much. However, the engine pulls from over one billion web pages, encyclopedias, journals and books. It is similar to Google in its functionality, except that it focuses more on scientific and academic results meaning more results will come from .edu or .org sites, as well as online encyclopedias. It also has an option to search documents directly providing easy access to PDFs of academic papers.

8. Educational Resources Information Center

Populated by the U.S. Department of Education, the Educational Resources Information Center (ERIC) is a great tool for academic research with more than 1.3 million bibliographic records of articles and online materials. ERIC provides access to an extensive body of education-related literature including journal articles, books, research syntheses, conference papers, technical reports, policy papers and more. 11. ResearchGate

ResearchGate is a unique social networking site for scientists and researchers. Over 11 million researchers submit their work, which totals more than 100 million publications, on the site for anyone to access. You can search by publication, data and author, or you can even ask the researchers questions. Though it s not a search engine that pulls from external sources, ResearchGate s own collection of publications provides a hearty selection for any inquisitive scholar.

12. BASE

The Bielefeld Academic Search Engine (BASE) prides itself as being one of the world s most voluminous search engines especially for academic web resources. Utilizing 4,000 sources, the site contains results from over 100 million documents. The advanced search option allows users to narrow their research so whether you re looking for a book, review, lecture, video or thesis, BASE can provide the specific format you need.

13. Infotopia

Infotopia describes itself as a Google-alternative safe search engine. The academic search engine pulls from results that have been curated by librarians, teachers and other educational workers. A unique search feature allows users to select a category, which ranges from art to health to science and technology, and then see a list of internal and external resources pertaining to the topic. So if you don t find what you re looking for within the pages of Infotopia, you will probably find it in one of its many suggested sites.

14. PubMed Central

This site is perfect for those studying anything related to healthcare or science. PubMed Central is operated by the National Center for Biotechnology Information, a division of the U.S. National Library of Medicine. The database contains more than 3 million full-text journal articles. It s similar to PubMed Health. which is specifically for health-related research and studies, and includes citations and abstracts to more than 26 million articles.

15. Lexis Web

Researching legal topics? Lexis Web is your go-to for any law-related inquiries you may have. The results are drawn from legal sites, which can be filtered by criteria such as news, blog, government and commercial. Getting Your Site Seen By Search Engines

By Karyn Greenstreet

copyright © 2007-2012, by Karyn Greenstreet. All rights reserved.

When people search for you on Google, does your site show up on page 1 — or on page 20 — of the search engine results?

Since 84% of internet traffic goes through search engines, being ranked highly by search engines will send you a huge number of prospective customers.

Are search engines sending you enough traffic to build your business?

For instance, for the phrase mastermind group (which I rank #1), Google sends me 23,000 visitors per year. For the phrase small business coaching (which I also rank on page 1), Google sends me over 10,000 visitors per year. Just those two search phrases alone send 30,000 NEW visitors to my site each year.

What if you could do the same for the keywords you want to target?

Optimizing your site to get it ranked highly on the search engines can be a complicated subject. To simplify things, it’s helpful to first understand how search engines add sites to their database. Then we’ll cover some tips that you can put on your own website that will help you to get listed on search engines and get a higher ranking.

The Major Search Players

Let’s start off with the major search engines, the ones that most people use. Google is the most widely used search engine, getting between 55-65% of all searches. Yahoo Search and Microsoft Bing lag far behind with a total of 15-20% each.

While there are thousands of search engines, it’s always a good idea to start with submitting your website to the three largest. Why? Because 95% of all searches go through either Google, Yahoo or Bing.

How Search Engines Read Your Site

Search engines send out crawlers to index your site’s contents. Crawlers follow the links found on your site and enter your site into their search database based on text they find on your pages. This text is either found on your public pages, or the text keywords found in behind-the-scenes tags.

The amount of your keywords found on your page, the more weight it has with the search engines and the higher your ranking. But in case you think you can load your page with keywords in order to fool the search engine, think again. Search engines are smart and you can be penalized for keyword stuffing on your website.

How Search Engines Index and Rank Your Site

Search engines use several techniques to determine which category your site belongs in and which keywords people will use to find your site when using the search engine. Google says they use over 200 parameters ( signals they call them) to categorize and rank a website.

When submitting your site to search engines, they will ask you for your URL (website address). Then they will crawl your site, checking to see which keywords and ideas are most important from your site. And remember, you will be penalized for spamming your keywords and rank LOWER because of it. Also it’s important to note that search engines can not read the text in graphics, so if you are using a graphic-based navigation or have your keywords on a graphic next to your logo, the search engine will not notice it unless you use ALT tags.

Some search engines will rank your site based on your title, description and keywords that are supplied behind-the-scenes in special coding called tags. While not every search engine will read tags, it certainly can’t hurt to use them.

Again, there are rules: your Title tag shouldn’t be more than 100 characters, and your Description tag shouldn’t be more than 250 characters. They can be longer, but Google only shows the first 60 characters of your Title tag, and the first 160 of your Description tag in search results (if it shows your Description tag at all).

Google says that they don’t read Keyword meta tags at all. Google’s Matt Cutts says that Google definitely reads your Description tag as well. (Matt Cutts also says that Google does NOT use the keyword meta tag to help determine rank in the same video above.)

Submitting Your Site to Search Engines

Once your site is primed and ready for the search engines, then you have to submit it to them.

Getting Your Site Seen By Search Engines

For Google, you can submit it here:

For Bing, you can submit it here:

Because Yahoo uses Bing’s search engine, you don’t need to submit it separately to Yahoo.

Use Google’s Webmaster Tools and Bing’s Webmaster Tools to see the status of your submission, any errors the search engines found when crawling your site, and some great statistics about the speed of your site.

Preparing your site for submission to search engines can feel like a daunting task. With these tips in mind, you’ll save yourself a lot of time and frustration when it comes time to submitting your site and rank higher in search results.
