Welcome to School of Biological Sciences.

Within G09 building are five main research laboratories, namely, Plant Pathology Laboratory, Phytochemistry Laboratory, Biotechnology and Molecular Biology Laboratory, Microbiology Laboratory, and Fish Biology Laboratory. The G09 building also houses teaching laboratories for Plant Pathology, Microbiology and Biotechnology. Academic staff offices are located within the two buildings.

The School of Biological Sciences had undergone very rapid development since it was established in 1969. Today the School has over 40 full-time and well-trained academic staff with expertise in various fields of biological sciences. The academic staff are well supported by technical staff, tutors and science officers either for teaching or research. As such, the School is able to offer up-to-date courses in biology, which are of high academic quality.

The School of Biological Sciences offers two undergraduate degrees, Bachelor of Science (Hons.) and Bachelor of Applied Science (Hons.). Both degrees features multidisciplinary training ranging from the basic biological sciences to the more applied aspects ones (Please refer to the undergraduate programmes of the School for more information on the biology thrust areas offer in pure science and applied science degrees).

The School is offering MSc and Ph.D graduate degrees by research. Post-graduate training will provide students with research skills in the most relevant and current technologies (Please refer to post-graduate research programme of the School as well as staff research profiles for more information).

In order to support its research and development activities as well as teaching, the School has well-equipped laboratories which are used to give basic and advanced training in the various biological techniques. Apart from these laboratories, the School is supported by other facilities such as Electron Microscope Unit, Herbarium, Plant House and Fish House.

For research and development activities, the School has collaborations with various international and local universities and research institutes. These collaborations are of primary importance as it can provide new ideas and awareness of emerging technologies for both the academic staff and graduate students.

The School of Biological Sciences emphasizes interdisciplinary approach in research tapping the potentials of biological sciences (such as microbiology, biochemistry, genetics and molecular biology).

School Counseling (Online)

The online M.A. in School Counseling, offered through Seton Hall University’s College of Education and Human Services, prepares competent, socially conscious and reflective counselors for work in ethnically, geographically and socially diverse K-12 educational settings. The program prepares school counselors to maximize the potential of all students through comprehensive developmental school counseling programs, and develops skills as competent school counselors and effective consultants, collaborators, advocates and leaders in an ever-changing global society.

This program is approved by the New Jersey Department of Education. The College of Education and Human Services is NCATE accredited. The program of study meets the credentialing requirements set by the NJ Department of Education.

The Program

The M.A. in School Counseling is a 48-credit program consisting of foundation, counseling and clinical courses culminating in a school counselor internship. Throughout the program students gain the knowledge and skills to provide counseling, prevention and early identification services to help children and adolescents achieve optimal development. Students also learn how to empower students and their families to overcome educational difficulties through a multidisciplinary team intervention approach, and provide crisis intervention, disaster response and coping strategies to students and families in the school community.

    Welcome to the Industrial Organizational Psychology graduate programs at Florida Institute of Technology! Industrial Organizational (I/O) psychology is the scientific study of the workplace. Rigor and methods of psychology are applied to issues of critical relevance to business, including talent management, coaching, assessment, selection, training, organizational development, performance, and work-life balance. The I/O programs at Florida Tech offer a balanced scientist-practitioner curriculum, small class sizes, and close mentoring from faculty members.     The industrial organizational psychology graduate programs at Florida Tech follow the scientist-practitioner model of graduate training, emphasizing the development of research skills, knowledge of I/O theory and techniques, and applied experiences. Through extensive course work, students receive great breadth in training, focusing on industrial psychology, organizational psychology and measurement/statistics. Florida Tech offers both M.S. and Ph.D. level training in industrial/organizational psychology.     Programs Offered

    The goal of the M.S. program is to offer a two-year terminal degree that prepares professionals to work within the broad I/O and human resource function in organizations. The M.S. program features a blend of rigorous coursework in the broad content areas of I/O, as well as opportunities to work on applied projects through coursework and through our Center for Organizational Effectiveness.

    Florida Tech’s doctoral degree in Industrial Organizational Psychology provides training and research opportunities in the complex issues associated with the management of human capital and the operation of organizations. The Ph.D. program is research-oriented and a number of research and quantitative methods courses are required. Each I/O faculty member supervises an active and productive research team and students are encouraged to join a research team that aligns with their interests. Beyond coursework and research, our program offers a number of opportunities for students to get involved and gain experience through our Center for Organizational Effectiveness, our Institute for Cross Cultural Management, our student chapter of the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), and our student-run mentor program.

    Our program is a leader in international I/O psychology education and our students come from around the globe.

    Consultants and researchers now operate in a global environment on global problems. Our program’s international focus is designed to ensure that our students are well equipped for those challenges and prepared to thrive in international settings.     We are pleased to welcome Professor Barbara Sherwood Lollar. who has been cross-appointed to the Department of Chemistry.

    A Professor in Earth Sciences, Barbara is a graduate of Harvard (B.A.) and the University of Waterloo (Ph.D.) and carried out postdoctoral research at the University of Cambridge. She is a Canada Research Chair in Isotopes of the Earth and Environment, and Past-President of the Geochemical Society.

    Japanese Business Schools: Grooming Entrepreneurs

    As Japan is now experiencing a generation change, an increasing number of young people go against the grain and embark on a business venture while seeking an internationally-focused MBA education. Naturally, setting up and running a new business requires presence in the country.

    This is where a new breed of MBA schools comes in. They provide practical and flexible business education in Japan without sacrificing the global aspect, and they strongly encourage entrepreneurial leadership.

    Hands-on training by business practitioners

    The founders of two private universities and business schools in Japan are amongst the country’s foremost business experts.

    Yoshito Hori, an MBA graduate from Harvard Business School, founded the GLOBIS Management School in 1992. GLOBIS’ Japanese-taught Graduate Diploma in Business Administration (GDBA) program was set up in 2003. In 2006 the school started to issue MBA degrees. Hori is now the dean of GLOBIS University and considered to be one of Japan’s most successful entrepreneurs.

    “GLOBIS itself is an entrepreneurial enterprise established by Dean Hori and his classes are based upon his own practical experience of setting up this business, in which I was very interested,” says GLOBIS graduate Hirofumi Tanaka.

    Kenichi Ohmae Graduate School of Business (KOGSB) is Japan’s only business school that provides internet- and satellite-based distance education via their AirCampus platform. The dean of the school, Dr Kenichi Ohmae, a partner at McKinsey for 25 years, has a wide network of partners and colleagues in the Japanese business community who give lectures to KOGSB students.

    The MBA meets the entrepreneurial mission

    Inoue Toshihiro graduated from KOGSB in 2007 and set up Living Style, an interior design company, in the same year.

    “In starting up a firm it is easy to lose sight of the whole situation or of the fundamentals due to everyday occurrences and being swayed by the opinions of clients. The KOGSB program stresses problem identification and solutions and I have grown into the habit of constantly reviewing why I started my own business and what the significance of my enterprise is from a larger perspective.”

    “Japan has been suffering from an economic downturn for nearly twenty years. Even major firms are struggling for existence in this competitive condition. Business people are now required to act as entrepreneurs and pursue self-improvement and MBA schools are responsible for providing a curriculum to meet their needs,” says Tsuyoshi Yasuda, MBA curriculum coordinator at KOGSB.

    Tanaka Naoki, a KOGSB 2007 graduate, is the head of sales at HD Parts, a company that manufacturers spare parts for motorbikes.

    “How fast one can react to change – to that of society and the needs of customers – has become an important factor in starting businesses but also in continuing them. Those with both an MBA and a sense of entrepreneurship will have the knowledge necessary to settling down in regular jobs or starting their own enterprises.”

    Chance for foreign entrepreneurs in Japan

    The GLOBIS International MBA program (IMBA), a two-year part-time MBA program in English, was established in 2009 and the launch of an English-taught one-year full-time MBA program is set for 2012. Of the 2009/2010 IMBA intake 32% of students are foreigners who live and work in Japan, including foreign entrepreneurs who set up and run a business in Japan.

    Edi Liss-Debbie from Israel is currently enrolled in the GLOBIS IMBA program. He is the CEO of GIshuR International Ltd, an import and sales company specializing in Israeli high fashion and designer jewelry.

    MBA entrepreneurship in a recession

    MBA graduates with an entrepreneurial spirit don’t seem tethered by adverse business conditions but they take the plunge and set up their own business while Japan is still recovering from the effects of the global economic crisis.

    Nanno Tomochika, the CEO of Crea Japan, a web platform dedicated to art, creativity and culture, graduated from KOGB in 2009 and set up Crea Japan in 2010.

    “Due to the prolonging recession, there is a sense of limitation in the economic situation of Japan. Traditional enterprises, university graduates and venture capitalists tend to seek stability and therefore turn to immediate short-term business.”

    “However, those who try and change society in the long-term must have a bird’s eye perspective to see the bigger picture and a strong spirit to involve others in abolishing the status quo. An MBA holder with entrepreneurship fosters such qualities and can approach and challenge social issues from a global perspective.”

    GLOBIS graduate Hirofumi Tanaka is now the representative partner at J-Capital Partners, a private equity fund specialized in MBO and IPO which he set up in 2010.

    This MSIT degree focuses on the need to adapt to the changing intruder landscape and to gain deeper understanding of risk management, information security, and data privacy. It draws upon the expertise in research, operations and analysis from the world-famous CERT Coordination Center (CERT®/CC) located at Carnegie Mellon’s Software Engineering Institute. Designated as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense Education by the National Security Agency, Carnegie Mellon is uniquely qualified to provide such training.

    • One undergraduate level Python or object-oriented (Java, C++, C#) programming class or equivalent experience prior to admission is recommended but not required.

    Online Graduate Programs for School Psychology

    Essential Information

    Master’s degrees in school psychology and related doctoral programs in educational psychology are available online, but they are not widely offered. While you’ll take most of your classes online, both program levels generally include an in-person residency requirement that may involve several days on campus. Some observation and lab courses may only be offered on campus as well. Most programs also have a required internship that you cannot complete online. When researching programs, look into this requirement and see if the school will help set up an internship that is convenient to you.

    If you earned an unrelated undergraduate degree, you will need to complete certain prerequisite psychology courses before being admitted to a master’s or doctoral degree program in school psychology.

    School Psychology Master’s Degree Programs

    An online master’s degree program in school psychology prepares students to become certified or licensed to work as psychologists in the educational field. Students gain skills in assisting children with behavioral, social, academic and emotional issues. The availability of online school psychology graduate degree programs is extremely limited, and this degree may be offered occasionally by for-profit schools and schools not approved by the National Association of School Psychologists or other professional organizations.

    To gain admittance into an online master’s degree program, students must have an undergraduate degree, and some schools additionally require a specified grade point average. Students can study related curriculum in a general psychology degree program.

    Program Requirements

    An online master’s degree program in school psychology can typically be completed in three years of full-time study. Because the last year usually entails a required clinical internship or practicum, this degree cannot be earned completely online. Additional observation and lab courses may also require in-person attendance. A number of classes are self paced, but many are on a semester schedule and students are required to adhere to assignment and test deadlines. In available online courses, students typically log onto an Internet platform to access course materials and lectures.

    Course Topics

    Some schools require students to complete basic psychology courses if their undergraduate degree was not related to psychology. Students in this degree program explore behaviors and needs in an educational environment and discuss appropriate intervention techniques and processes.

    Psychological Assessment

    Students learn the method of selecting school children for evaluation and are taught how to administer, score and interpret the results of the tests. Additional assessment courses expand on communicating the results to others and creating intervention plans.

    Ethics and Professional Conduct

    The various legal and ethical issues that exist in schools are among the topics analyzed. Students are versed in the role of the school psychologist, what his or her responsibilities are, and what codes of conduct exist.

    Child and Adolescent Counseling

    Students study popular theories on counseling children and discover ways to utilize teachers, parents and mental health professionals in helping the children. Some hands-on work applying these skills in real-life situations may occur in class.

    Graduate Programs in Medical Informatics

    Medical informatics is the intersection of information science, computer science, and health care. This field deals with the resources, devices, and methods required to optimize the acquisition, storage, retrieval, and use of information in health and biomedicine. This program covers the multi-disciplinary field of informatics, decision support systems, telemedicine, ethics, consumer health informatics, international healthcare systems, global health informatics, translational research informatics, and home care. Our program is designed to focus on complex medical decisions, evidence-based medicine, disease management, and population health management. Students will learn how to design and implement innovative applications and promote new technologies to improve health care.

    Established regulations such as the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) include specific security and compliance provisions for the healthcare sector. The advancement of technology in the medical field, accompanied by the requirements to keep sensitive data confidential, creates the need for a graduate program that offers medical informatics education and provides course work and study in the critical area of data security.

    The Master of Science in Medical Informatics is designed to:

    1. Deepen understanding and knowledge of medical informatics and computer/information security;
    2. Provide research opportunities within the field of medical informatics;
    3. Provide a flexible curriculum to allow for both traditional and nontraditional graduate students.

    Graduates will be qualified to work in areas such as hospital and healthcare systems, health informatics firms, research laboratories, computer/information security firms, medical technology firms, public health organizations, medical software companies, insurance companies, and government organizations.

    Master’s Degree: Thesis Option

    This option requires a research thesis prepared under the supervision of the advisor. The thesis describes a research investigation and its results. The scope of the research topic for the thesis should be defined in such a way that a full-time student could complete the requirements for a master s degree in twelve months or three semesters following the completion of course work by regularly scheduling graduate research credits.

    The minimum requirements are as follows:

    In Human Development and Psychology, you will learn how to support healthy development across cultures and across the lifespan, and how to apply this knowledge in schools and other education-related settings.

    Knowledge of human development is highly gratifying and valuable in itself; it can also greatly enhance your ability to make a meaningful difference in children’s lives. To run an effective afterschool program for adolescent urban youth, for example, teachers and mentors need to understand the specific challenges of adolescent development as well as cultural variations in child-adult relationships. To operate a successful business or organization, a good manager must work with employees to identify and break down psychological obstacles to change. And what about raising kids? Does our societal emphasis on “happiness” prevent parents and teachers from raising caring, courageous, and ethical children?

    In the Human Development and Psychology (HDP) master’s program, you will work closely with an extraordinary faculty comprised of prominent voices in early childhood development, organizational psychology, emotional, cognitive and moral development, trauma and child advocacy, and much more. Students also have opportunities to do internships and research that will enable them to better integrate theory and practice and to become more effective teachers, leaders, researchers, and advocates.

    Child Advocacy Strand

    In addition to the general HDP Program, we offer a separate Child Advocacy strand that includes a year-long child advocacy internship.     The program in Human Development and Psychology has a long history at Harvard and is one of the core programs at the Graduate School of Education. We are passionate about understanding how people develop over time and what that means for schools and other educational settings. We also have a strong interest in the wide variety of contexts in which development occurs.

    Researchers in HDP cover a wide range of ages and topics; from early language development, emotional, social and moral development, to the dramatic changes in cognitive skills in early elementary school, to studies of adolescent and adult development. Research focuses on schools in diverse locations and settings in the U.S. as well as development in international contexts. The program offers a variety of perspectives on the complicated nature of developmental change.     HDP is a one-year, full-time master’s program that immerses future practitioners and researchers in the latest theories and discoveries related to child, adolescent, and adult development. Here are some of our program’s greatest strengths:

    Applied Research – Effective research doesn’t occur in a vacuum. As an HDP student, you will continually consider how research can strengthen practice.

    Thought Leaders – HDP is one of the longest-running programs at HGSE, recognized globally for the influential research and writing of our faculty, which includes Guggenheim Fellows, MacArthur Prize recipients, and award-winning authors. Our faculty member’s expertise is matched only by their accessibility as student mentors and advocates.

    Cohort Community – In the HDP program, you will join an extraordinary cohort of students representing a rich diversity of personal and professional backgrounds. The energy, curiosity, and compassion of HDP students, and their common commitment to understanding the deepest puzzles of development, create an exhilarating learning environment that forms the basis of lifelong friendships and professional relationships.

    The HDP curriculum balances structure and flexibility. Over two semesters, you are required to complete courses for a total of 32 credits. HDP courses cover subjects as varied as language and literacy development, educational neuroscience, prevention science and practice, early childhood education policy, assessment, gender and relationships, moral and civic development, and development across cultures.

    General HDP Program Requirements

    You will complete eight courses or 32 credits in the following categories:

    One developmental psychology course, to be chosen from the following:

    (May be used as additional HDP courses but cannot count twice.)

    One research methods and data analysis course, to be chosen from the following:

    Two Human Development and Psychology courses. These include any courses listed with an “H” in the course number (including AH or HT courses) or T440, T543, and T560:

    One Human Development and Psycholgy course with a strong focus on diversity and equity. The following courses would meet this requirement:

    Three elective courses either at HGSE or at Harvard or MIT through cross-registration .

    Child Advocacy Strand Requirements

    Students in the child advocacy strand work closely with strand director, Betsy Groves, to craft a study plan that reflects their individual backgrounds and goals.

    You will complete eight courses (32 credits) in the following categories:

    • H387Y and H388Y. Fall Child Advocacy Seminar and Spring Internship
    • One research methods and data analysis course
    • One overview course related to child development/risk and protection
    • Two courses related to systems that impact children and families
    • Elective courses either at HGSE or through cross-registration

    The study of human development and psychology is interdisciplinary by nature and many HDP faculty members hold joint positions with other Harvard graduate schools. Like all HGSE students, you are free to cross-register at all Harvard graduate schools and even nearby MIT.

    It’s undeniable that many HDP students come to HGSE expressly for the chance to work closely with our remarkable faculty. Professor Howard Gardner is the father of the multiple intelligences theory and leads a research project into the nature and impact of good work. Program director Richard Weissbourd ’s book The Parents We Mean to Be was selected as one of The New Yorker’s best nonfiction books of 2009. Professor Robert Kegan and his colleague Lisa Laskow Lahey revolutionized organizational psychology and personal development through their immunity to change approach. Learn more about the extraordinary wealth of knowledge and experience that’s available to HDP students through our faculty.

    The HDP program attracts accomplished and service-minded students from a broad range of backgrounds and professional interests. Many of our students have undergraduate degrees in psychology and are interested in pursuing clinical practice or research. Other HDP students come from the nonprofit sector, looking to deepen their impact as providers and advocates for children and adults. Still others are working in the education sector as teachers, administrators, and policy researchers. The diversity of student backgrounds is reflected in their research interests, which include the development of compassion and gratitude in children, the challenges faced by immigrant children and corporate leadership coaching.

    HDP graduates are putting their Harvard degree and experience to work at all levels of the education sector — public and independent schools, nonprofit organizations, and government agencies — as well as pursuing careers in public health, social services, child advocacy, and social policy. HDP alumni are in a range of roles including kindergarten teachers, doctoral students in clinical psychology, public television producers, admissions directors, school-based child advocates, and education policy analysts.

    Identify Trends in Criminal Justice Scholarships

    Most scholarships for criminal justice majors focus on students who have already finished an undergraduate degree, who intend to use their criminal justice degrees to pursue graduate-level law programs. Many of these are scholarships are targeted towards students of a particular ethnicity. Others focus on serving students in a particular area of law, such as media law or domestic violence. There are other opportunities available for students who do not meet these requirements, however, so do not worry if you do not meet these criteria. Students interested in other specializations, such as law librarianship, criminology and law enforcement can also find funding opportunities online, though there are fewer of these.

    Many of these scholarships are offered at the state or local level, rather than the national level, so start your search by filtering for your geographic location. Some counties provide scholarships for students who are interested in pursuing areas of criminal justice, law, and law enforcement that suit the needs of those areas, such as fish and game management or criminology. Some do not restrict students from other areas from applying, but they tend to give preference to local students. As a result, you should consider asking schools and law enforcement organizations in your area about their opportunities for students.     Key Criminal Justice Scholarships

    Wade H. Stroud Scholarship

    The Wade H. Stroud Scholarship is typical of criminal justice scholarships for students at a particular college, and is targeted at students at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Applicants must be part of the school’s criminal justice program and have a GPA of at least 2.5. Students must write a personal statement about their intended career goals and provide at least three letters of recommendation. The scholarship is primarily targeted at students currently starting their criminal justice program, as applicants must have at least two terms of their studies remaining. The monetary reward is $800.

    Indiana Sheriffs’ Association Scholarship

    The Indiana Sheriffs’ Association Scholarship is a typical state-level scholarship for students interested in law enforcement and criminal justice, and is offered by the premier law enforcement organization in the state. Students applying for this scholarship should have a passion for law enforcement and participate in a wide range of extracurricular activities. Targeted at students in high school or pursuing undergraduate degrees, this scholarship requires students to be committed to a law enforcement career and be members of the association. Students who are not members can still apply, but must enclose a membership application as well. The monetary reward is $500.

    This 60-hour graduate psychology program leads to a Master of Arts degree in Counseling Psychology.

    The program will prepare you to assess and to provide psychotherapy or counseling to people in need. It has a strong clinical component and meets the academic requirements for the Texas Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) credential. With this license, you can practice as a professional counselor in your own practice, for a mental health agency, a psychiatric hospital, a residential treatment center, or a university counseling center, among other sites. Counseling psychology job options are better the higher your credentials. A master’s level degree and license make you more competitive and in-demand. Want to learn more?     As an LPC, your professional practice may involve assessment, intervention, and/or consultation.

    Admission to the counseling psychology, forensic psychology or school psychology master’s program is based on an evaluation by the program’s admission committee of the following information.

    • A 1-2 page essay that states the applicant’s reasons for applying to the program and the applicant’s career goals.
    • One Letter of Recommendation (including the Graduate Recommendation Form for Graduate Psychology Programs (from a non-UHV, non-family source.
    • Evidence of having completed undergraduate or graduate courses in statistics, research, and abnormal psychology. A particular course will be waived as a requirement if the student passes a comprehensive final or its equivalent for the designated course with a grade of C or better. The exam may be taken no more than once for a particular course.

    The Master of Science in Counselor Education: School Counseling emphasis is designed for students wishing preparation as counselors in school settings, primarily public schools. The SOC code for this particular occupation is 21-1012.

    Counseling Education Program Mission Statement

    The Counselor Education Program at Eastern Washington University is committed to the selection, training, supervision, and professional success of counseling students, in keeping with the high standards established by the Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP). As a regional teaching university, EWU has a proud history of providing education to a high percentage of first generation college students, often from under-represented and lower socioeconomic communities, a tradition which the Counselor Education program maintains. Thus, counselor training occurs in a learning community that is intentionally focused on both skills development and personal growth of the counselor-in-training. In this way, Counselor Education fulfills its purpose of preparing competent and caring professional counselors to meet the needs of diverse urban and rural communities.

    Classes and experiences are organized to provide thorough instruction in the skills and knowledge generally recognized by the counseling profession to be effective with a K-12 population. Candidates not only focus on the following in the graduate classroom, but also for the K-12 population he or she will serve: academic, career, and personal/social development. The program is not only accredited by CACREP, but is approved by the Washington State Professional Educator Standards Board (PESB). Graduates of the program meet the requirements to become an Educational Staff Associate (ESA), the credential held by School Counselors.

    Candidates of the program will have education and experiences shaped by the ASCA (American School Counseling Association) National Model. They also have opportunity to be mentored by professionals in the community while they complete an internship. This relationship helps guide the candidate in construction of a professional portfolio, which is a product of the knowledge and skills gained through the graduate experience. Themes include leadership, advocacy, collaboration, and systemic change, which are incorporated into the components of the ASCA model. The components are foundation, management, accountability, and delivery. Instruction includes all of these aspects, along with the CACREP core competencies, providing graduates with a solid entry point for a rewarding career.

    A student enrolled in this program can expect to graduate in 21 months or 6 academic quarters over 2 academic years. We have a 100% on-time completion rate once a student begins. Resident tuition for the school couneling program is $21,906.96 for two years (2016-2017) and non-resident tuition is $50,876.76 for two years. Fees for two academic year average around $1200.00 and estimated book costs for the program for 2 years is $1000.00.     Approximately 40 students were enrolled in the program with an estimated 75% graduation rate during the 2013-2014. Average completion rate is typically higher and ranges between 85% and 100%. The Program accepts a variable number of students each year, but is typically 24-30 with 50% in each emphasis – meaning 12 school counseling candidates. Eighty percent of accepted students graduate in the expected time period, two years for full-time students. Courses accommodate only full-time students. When a student graduates from this program, he or she is able to enter the workforce at the MA + 45 level at any school district in Washington.

    Although we are an Examining and Awarding body, we are also a large employer, with hundreds of staff in the UK and overseas.

    The Institute has all the typical departments one would expect to find in any educational sector organisation a Post Room, a large IT Department, an Accounts Office, a Print Department, Book Store and a large Data Processing Department, to name but a few, and one of my many roles involves interviewing prospective employees.

    In the course of every interview I look for specific information about the candidate. What qualifications does this candidate possess? What are his or her skill sets? What is his or her employment history, what interpersonal skills does the candidate have and what is their level of general knowledge? Obviously, I also evaluate their personal presentation and their communication skills.

    The information I need from candidates is going to be wanted by all employers for whom the starting point is always a review of the candidate s qualifications. The reality is that for all those seeking employment, it will be their qualifications which will dictate their employment opportunities, career progression, career prospects and eventually, their suitability for promotion.

    Purpose of Study Professional Plans

    The boundless possibility of trying out and the instant knowledge of the outcome that stimulates one for further analysis of a rationale in question . is what I find most appealing about Computer Science. Keeping up an inquisitive and explorative attitude, I believe, leads to a constant learning process. This approach adds to the already immense potential for innovation that exists in this field.

    As a student in the final year of undergraduate study for a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Computer Science Engineering, I look to graduate study to refine my knowledge and skills in my areas of interest. I believe it will also serve to give direction to my goal of a career as a research professional at an academic or commercial, research-oriented organisation. I intend to pursue an MS degree in order to reach that goal.

    Academic Background Research Interests

    In my undergraduate studies, I have benefited from the breadth of Shivaji University s syllabi content that has given me a comprehensive exposure to the core areas of Computer Science and a strong conceptual understanding of the same. In these three and half years of study, I have strived to maintain an approach of expending independent effort in all my endeavors. Learning by myself and sharing my knowledge with others has been most worthwhile, when comprehending a concept.

    Over the past two years, I have developed an interest in the areas of Compiler Construction and Information Retrieval. The Compiler Construction lab sessions last semester required the design of a compiler for C++ programs that were restricted to For loops, Switch case statements and simple input and output. The work involved in this, as well as the courses, Formal Systems and Automata and Compiler Construction. have lead me to appreciate the intricacies involved in this field. However, for my MS degree, I remain open to other topics as well.

    For my B.E project, I have decided to concentrate on my other area of interest viz. Information Retrieval. I m attempting to evolve a technique that, when employed in a search engine, will maximize the comprehensiveness and precision of the query listings. The ongoing work has introduced me to a vast body of pertinent research, such as the University of Washington s Dynamic Reference Sifting technique for locating an individual s homepage, among others. This has served to sharpen my inclination to engage in active research within this area.

    One person s life influences the lives of an unbelievable number of people . one of the most important lessons I learned, being the Head of the Apex Body at senior secondary level (11th and 12th standard). Hence the need of responsible actions. Becoming the youngest Head of the Apex Body ever and the only one to have served for a period of two years eventually turned out to be a confidence booster. It taught me that the basis for good work is self-reliance and very importantly, time management. Not all of my entire two years were devoid of shortcomings. I learned to accept both criticism and praise with a positive frame of mind. My work involved organising various events, that brought with them the opportunity to work and interact with various kinds of people. This was a distinctively gratifying experience for me, which I feel would stand in good stead in the future, especially in lieu of any teaching experience.

    In conclusion, I would like to add that the essence of University education lies in the synergetic relationship between the student and his department. I feel that graduate study at your University will be the most logical extension of my academic pursuits and a major step towards achieving my objectives.     The MS in Nonprofit Management is a blended online residency program and is one of only a few graduate programs in the country focused on management needs specific to the nonprofit sector.

    Eastern University designed this program in response to the unique needs faced by the nonprofit sector today. Increasing competition in the nonprofit marketplace mandates that if an organization is to remain viable, effective management tools must be developed and applied. This program focuses on helping present and future leaders in the not-for-profit sector gain solid analytical and problem-solving skills specific to nonprofit organizations.

    Eastern’s nonprofit management degree is offered as a blended online and residency program in the Philadelphia area. Students meet in class for (6) four-day residencies over the course of 24 months, with research and field-based learning in the interim.

    With convenient class locations and only occasional residencies throughout the program, working individuals are able to balance their busy work schedules with their classroom agendas. In-class discussions, relationship building between instructors and students, as well as independent research and project development are among the attributes of the program.     The Environmental Sciences Graduate Program offers the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Environmental Sciences.

    Advanced training in Environmental Sciences is becoming increasingly necessary to address complex problems involving natural resources and environmental quality. Although this task frequently requires specialized knowledge in various fields of science, it also requires understanding and integration of a wide variety of interacting physical, chemical, biological, and societal influences. This interaction makes graduate study in environmental sciences distinct from many other scientific fields. We have designed our program to offer graduate training in a number of specialized focus areas within environmental sciences, operating within a single graduate degree program administered by the Department of Environmental Sciences. Students trained in the Environmental Sciences Graduate Program can fill many areas of expertise needed in the state and nation. Potential career opportunities exist at regulatory agencies, consulting firms, government and academic research institutions, and industrial research facilities.

    The Environmental Sciences Graduate Program offers graduate training in:

    Master‘s Degree

    The Department of Environmental Sciences offers the M.S. degree in Environmental Sciences under the Plan I (Thesis) and Plan II (Comprehensive Examination) options. The general requirements for the M.S. degree are found in the Announcement of the Graduate Division.

    Plan I (Thesis)

    Students must complete a minimum of 36 quarter units of graduate and upper-division undergraduate courses in, or significantly related to, environmental sciences. At least 24 of the 36 units must be in graduate courses. A maximum of 12 of these units may be in graduate research for the thesis. No more than 4 units of ENSC 290 and 2 units of graduate seminar courses may be applied toward the degree. A thesis must be written and accepted by the M.S. thesis committee members, and a final oral defense of the thesis must be passed. Students also will be required to give a presentation annually at the Environmental Sciences Graduate Program Student Symposium.

    Plan II (Comprehensive Examination)

    Students must complete a minimum of 36 quarter units of graduate and upper-division undergraduate courses in, or significantly related to, environmental sciences. At least 18 units must be in graduate courses. Students may count no more than 2 units of graduate seminar courses and 6 units of graduate internship courses toward the required 18 units and no units from graduate research for thesis or dissertation.

    Students must take a comprehensive written examination that covers fundamental topics in environmental sciences. The written examination, which is three to four hours long, is prepared and evaluated by a committee appointed by the field director. The examination is taken during the latter part of the final quarter in the M.S. program. Students must wait at least eight weeks before retaking a failed examination. Students failing the examination twice are dismissed from the program.

    Normative Time to Degree

    Doctoral Degree

    The Department of Environmental Sciences offers the Ph.D. degree in Environmental Sciences. The general requirements for the Ph.D. degree are found in the Announcement of the Graduate Division.

    Course Work

    Students must complete the course requirements and will be required to give a presentation annually at the Environmental Sciences Graduate Program Student Symposium.

    Comprehensive Written Examination

    Following completion of all coursework prescribed by the student’s Advisory Committee, a written qualifying examination will be prepared and administered to the student by a Written Qualifying Examination Committee. The Written Qualifying Examination Committee will consist of at least three faculty members with interests in the student‘s line of research. The purpose of the written qualifying examination is to determine that the student has gained sufficient knowledge in the chosen field to perform professionally and competently. The written exam may be attempted only twice. If the written qualifying exam is failed twice, the student will be redirected to the M.S. degree or terminated from the program.

    Oral Examination

    A student who satisfactorily passes the written qualifying examination may proceed with the oral qualifying examination, which will focus on the dissertation proposal. The oral examination is conducted before the Oral Qualifying Examination Committee, consisting of five faculty members, one of whom must be from outside the ESGP. The oral examination may be attempted only twice. If the oral qualifying exam is failed twice, the student will be redirected to the M.S. degree or terminated from the program. The written and oral comprehensive examinations will normally be taken at the end of the second year of graduate study and before the start of the third year.

    Dissertation

    All Ph.D. students must write a doctoral dissertation, which must be read and accepted by all members of the Doctoral Dissertation Committee, comprised of at least three faculty members from the ESGP. A final oral thesis defense in front of the three committee members must be passed.

    Relationship between Master‘s and Doctoral Programs The M.S. and Ph.D. programs are separate. Students who enter the Ph.D. program do not need to acquire a M.S. degree first, although students may elect to take both.

In addition to gaining a comprehensive understanding of the institutional and cultural world of higher education, students gain skills, such as management, planning and evaluation, and decision-making that enhance their leadership in a higher education setting. The concentration in higher education builds from a core centered on leadership and management, critical issues influencing higher education, and an understanding of how universities work. The concentration in higher education student affairs builds from a core centered on the administration of student affairs/services, critical issues facing higher education, and theories underlying college students development. Students can select coursework to suit their academic and career goals in consultation with their advisor.

    Through our doctoral program in higher education, students broaden and deepen their knowledge and skills in higher education and serve as advocates and change agents for postsecondary education, as well as researchers and professors in higher education settings.     Industrial-Organizational (I-O) Psychology is the study of how people behave at work. More specifically, I-O psychologists are interested in such topics as: recruiting and hiring the best people, improving employee skills, developing performance appraisal and reward systems, ensuring fair workplace procedures, motivating employees, fostering team work, leadership, and employee well-being.

    The Industrial-Organizational (I-O) Psychology program at the University of Guelph is unique in Canada because of our balanced approach to graduate education. We highly value both the research and practice in our field, and as a result, our graduates are highly sought after by both academic and applied employers.

    On the research side, we have faculty who are heavily involved in basic and applied research and our graduate students have a strong record of winning research and thesis awards. In short, our faculty and graduates are working to extend our understanding of psychological phenomena in the workplace and to use this knowledge to improve productivity and the quality of life at work.     What does Business Information Systems at the UvA have to offer me?

    The BIS track focuses on:

    • how information systems can be developed and managed in line with organisational or societal goals and all other information systems already in use
    • how organisations, products, processes or societal functions can be innovated by ICT application
    • how people use information in business processes and decision-making processes
    • how effects of ICT on organisations and society can be studied.

    The word organisation in this context means business, governmental and entrepreneurial organisations or their networks.

    The Graduate Program

    The graduate program in the Department of Biological Sciences is designed to prepare students for careers in teaching and research. Critical thinking skills and technical expertise are achieved primarily through dissertation research beginning with a firm foundation of course work and seminars.

    There are two pathways to enter the Department of Biological Sciences. Students may be admitted directly to the department, or admitted through the Interdisciplinary Graduate Program (IGP). During the first year students are engaged in course work, but also gain valuable experience in research and identify their area of interest by completing research rotations. Students will typically finalize their selection of a mentor and begin research in the lab of their choice by May of their first year. Specific requirements for completion of the Ph.D. degree in Biological Sciences continue in ensuing years, as detailed in the Program and Requirements section.

    Since the field of biology is broad, ranging from molecules and cells to organisms and ecosystems, the research interests of the faculty in the Department of Biological Sciences and the course offerings within the department are extremely diverse. Flexibility is the key, allowing students to pursue individual interests and complete the requirements for graduation by taking specialized courses in the Department of Biological Sciences or other departments at Vanderbilt. In addition, the Department of Biological Sciences offers training in teaching, since graduate students serve as teaching assistants for two or more semesters in the course of their graduate training.

    Information for UWM Undergraduates and Alumni Only

    We believe that it is important for graduate students to learn and work with a range of faculty during their training. Therefore, students with bachelor s degrees from UWM who majored in psychology are not eligible to apply for admission to our PhD programs unless they have earned a master s degree at a different institution. Similarly, those who double-majored in psychology and another subject at UWM are not eligible to apply to our PhD programs. However, UWM undergraduates who majored in psychology are eligible to apply for admission to the terminal master s programs.
