What is a Photo Tour?

Loved by non-photographers too, we seek out the world’s most extraordinary wildlife, landscape and cultural experiences then tour small groups there in comfort, providing unique access away from the crowds with exclusive charter of ships, aircraft, vehicles and remote lodges for not only the most incredible, unhurried photography opportunities on Earth, but also an unforgettable holiday. I love to travel, but I hate being stuck with loads of other people (especially when we’ve got nothing in common), being taken to the regular, over-crowded tourist attractions or wasting time in an amazing country just relaxing by some pool. I want to get the most out of my holidays – I want to see as many different animals as I can, I want to travel through different landscapes and be shown hidden gems off the beaten path, I want to experience the culture, taste the food, meet new friends with similar interests, enjoy some luxury and importantly, I want to have the time to take some beautiful and unique photos of it all. This is what we strive for with our photography tours and workshops.

It’s not enough for me to spot a distant lion, tick it off and move on – I wan’t to have the option to try and get closer, on the correct side for best lighting and even wait for him to lift his head and stare directly down the barrel of my camera lens for a great photo – or to move on when I’m done – I want flexibility. I want the inside tips for the best photo location to be ready when the sun rises over the horizon and spills across the bay onto those boulders – and if I can’t quite get my photo to work, it’d be awesome to have a friendly pro-photographer right there to offer advice (not one who’ll stand in front of me to get the best shot themselves!). If there’s a seal colony out on an island nearby, then I’d want to charter a boat tour out there just with my friends onboard so we can spend as much or as little time as we want to get the photos without being crowded on a regular sight-seeing tour. If the seal colony was a bit of a tourist attraction on a local beach then I’d want to wait for the crowds to leave, and go down onto the beach after hours – just us as a small group, and a private ranger guide to photograph them at our leisure in beautiful evening lighting.

You don’t even need to be a photographer to love this style of holiday – who wouldn’t like a bit of luxury and a bit of extra patience from their tour leaders, or to be given the opportunity to fly over lakes covered in pink flamingos in Africa in a doors-off plane or over a beautiful coastline in a doors-off helicopter for some epic views? Stay on a private island, learn some new skills with your photography, make some new friends and have an unforgettable, unique holiday – all at the same time! Sound good? Who is Chris Bray ?

Chris grew up sailing around the world then leading world-first expeditions across the arctic before becoming an award-winning Australian Geographic photographer, Lowepro ambassador and Canon’s Australian ambassador for five years. Chris’s work has appeared in National Geographic and Discovery Channel along with Australian Geographic, TIME Magazine etc. He’s also an accomplished writer, with feature articles published around the world and even a successful book ‘The 1000 Hour Day ‘ (now an award-winning documentary ‘The Crossing’), sits on the advisory committee for The Australian Geographic Society and is founder and CEO of Conservation United. crowd-funding the world’s critical conservation projects. Chris is also an International Fellow of ‘The Explorers Club ‘ and has been chairman of their Australia and New Zealand chapter.

Chris and his wife Jess are also keen high-latitude sailors, recently becoming the first people to sail a junk-rig boat through the Northwest Passage over the arctic, on their little 29-foot wooden sailboat ‘Teleport ‘. Australian Geographic Society’s ‘Young Adventurer of the Year’ in 2004 for a Tasmanian wilderness hike, Chris has also been awarded their ‘Spirit of Adventure’ medal in 2009.

Chris still leads many of our tours and his passion for wildlife, photography and wild places continues to drive our growth.

A sample of synovial fluid is needed for this test. Synovial fluid is normally a thick, straw-colored liquid found in small amounts in joints, bursae, and tendon sheaths.

After the area is cleaned, the health care provider will insert a sterile needle through the skin and into the joint space. Once in the joint, fluid is drawn through the needle into a sterile syringe.

The fluid sample is sent to the laboratory. The laboratory technician will check the sample’s color and clarity, and then place it under a microscope to check it for red and white blood cells, crystals (in the case of gout), and bacteria. In addition, there may be a chemical analysis, and if infection is a concern, a sample will be cultured to see if any bacteria grow.

How to prepare for the test

Normally, no special preparation is necessary, but contact your health care provider before the test to make sure. Tell your doctor if you are taking blood thinners, as they can affect test results.

How the test will feel

Occasionally, the health care provider will first inject local anesthesia with a small needle, which will sting. The aspiration is done with a larger needle and may also cause some pain. The procedure usually lasts less than one minute.

Why the test is performed

The test can help diagnose the cause of pain or swelling in joints. Removing the fluid can also help relieve joint pain.

This test may be used to diagnose:

  • Gout
  • Infection
  • Other inflammatory joint conditions
  • Joint injury
  • Osteoarthritis

What abnormal results mean

Abnormal joint fluid may look cloudy or abnormally thick.

Blood in the joint fluid may be a sign of injury inside the joint or a body-wide bleeding problem. An excess amount of normal synovial fluid can also be a sign of osteoarthritis.

What the risks are

  • Infection of the joint — unusual but more common with repeated aspirations
  • Bleeding into the joint space

Special considerations

Ice or cold packs may be applied to the joint for 24 to 36 hours after the test to reduce the swelling and joint pain. Depending on the exact problem, you can probably resume your normal activities after the procedure. Talk to your health care provider to determine what activity is most appropriate for you.

University of Phoenix Accreditation Hits Snag As Panel Recommends Probation

A team of accreditors reviewing the University of Phoenix has recommended that the school be placed on probation, the university’s parent said Monday, jeopardizing the reputation of the nation’s largest for-profit college and its ability to collect federal student aid dollars crucial to the school’s bottom line.

The Apollo Group, which owns the 319,000-student university, said in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission that a regional accreditation review team determined that the University of Phoenix had “insufficient autonomy” from its corporate parent -– a development that may prevent the university from achieving its “mission and successful operation.” The Apollo Group controls the leadership of the University of Phoenix board.

Apollo Group representatives said the company intends to appeal the recommendation, and will work with accreditors to resolve outstanding issues. The company said its management structure was “customary” for parent companies and subsidiaries.

The probation recommendation is not final. The board of the Higher Learning Commission, a Midwest college accrediting body, will likely make a final decision in June.

But the announcement signals that university accreditors are tightening reviews of for-profit colleges, which experienced explosive enrollment growth during the Great Recession as millions sought to improve their fortunes with a college degree. All colleges must be accredited in order to remain eligible for federal student aid. Six regional accreditors collect fees from schools to consider them for approval, part of a peer-review process that dates back more than a century. Reviewers certify such things as academic courses and quality, and the accreditation standards are used in part to determine whether students can transfer credits from one institution to another.

Members of Congress in recent years have criticized the accreditation system as a rubber-stamp regulatory process that does little to protect taxpayer investments in higher education.

For-profit colleges such as the University of Phoenix get much of their revenue from federal aid programs, including subsidized student loans and Pell grants. The University of Phoenix last year received 84 percent of its revenue from federal financial aid programs, totaling more than $3.2 billion, according to company securities filings. The school’s logo and advertisements can be seen on television commercials and highway billboards across the nation.

The for-profit college industry has come under fire in recent years, as the Obama administration, state attorneys general and lawmakers have questioned high tuition, low graduation rates and high rates of student loan defaults at many schools. More than 22 percent of students at for-profit colleges defaulted on federal loans within three years — nearly twice the rate of students at public institutions, according to federal data.

The University of Phoenix had a three-year default rate of more than 26 percent, according to the most recent federal data.

In the past year, regional accreditors have cracked down on some for-profit institutions, including Ashford University, which in seven years morphed from a 300-student Catholic school in Iowa into a massive online institution serving nearly 90,000 students. Regional accreditors on the West Coast denied Ashford’s bid for accreditation last year. arguing that the school had low graduation rates and was spending much more money on new student recruitment than educating current students.

The Higher Learning Commission has taken no formal action against the University of Phoenix. School officials said in the SEC filing on Monday that a review team found that the university’s board was unable to “assure the university’s integrity” and “make decisions necessary to achieve the institution’s mission and successful operation.” The Apollo Group elects members of the University of Phoenix board of directors. The university’s 11-member board includes four members who also serve on the parent company’s board or senior leadership team.

“We believe that it is neither remarkable nor improper for a parent corporation to exercise appropriate influence of its wholly-owned subsidiary,” Apollo Group said in the SEC filing. The University of Phoenix is responsible for more than 90 percent of the Apollo Group’s revenue.

“We are confident that all concerns expressed by the (accreditors) can and will be successfully addressed in due course,” Mark Brenner, a spokesman for the Apollo Group, wrote in an emailed statement. He added that the draft report showed University of Phoenix “was found to be in compliance with substantially all criteria associated with academic matters.”

The Higher Learning Commission is a private body, and is not required to release reports. The group did not make its findings public.

“In keeping with policy and practice, the commission will not speculate on possible outcomes of the evaluation,” the organization said in a written statement .

If the Higher Learning Commission board decides to place the University of Phoenix on probation, the university would have up to two years to remedy problems. The school would remain accredited while on probation, meaning it would not be disqualified from receiving federal aid dollars.

Apollo Group executives mentioned the likelihood of negative findings from accreditors in a conference call with investors last month. The company wrote in Monday’s public filing that if the school were placed on probation, its reputation “could be adversely affected, which in turn may negatively impact (the) ability to recruit and enroll students and to recruit and retain faculty and staff.”

As the Obama administration and Congress have stepped up scrutiny of for-profit colleges, University of Phoenix enrollment dropped to 356,000 in August from more than 460,000 two years earlier, according to company securities filings. A quarterly filing last month said enrollment was 319,000.

    New research released earlier this month showed that Biotronik’s home monitoring system significantly reduces mortality rates in patients who have implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs).

    Biotronik, a cardiac technology manufacturer based in Berlin, Germany, has been offering their home monitoring system in the U.S. for more than 17 years. The recent research in the TRUECOIN meta-analysis, published May 11 in the European Heart Journal, showed that Biotronik’s home monitoring system reduced mortality and hospitalizations by 36 percent.

    Here are six things to know about the study and its findings:

    • How the system works: The home monitoring system connects patients to their providers by wirelessly transmitting their cardiac data to Biotronik servers. Physicians then have access to the data so they can properly interpret it and detect any problems.
    • The study included more than 2,400 patients from three previous trials on Biotronik’s system (the TRUST, ECOST and IN-TIME studies). The IN-TIME study was the first large-scale, randomized, controlled trial, which demonstrated a significant reduction in mortality in patients who had Biotronik’s home monitoring system.
    • The findings: TRUECOIN, which collected data from 181 centers, revealed that by using the home monitoring system, all-cause mortality and hospitalizations could be reduced by 36 percent. “They were trying to verify that the mortality findings from the other studies were actually viable,” said Rupa Basu, the senior vice president of corporate accounts and strategy at Biotronik.

    The system is simple to use. Compared to its competitors, Biotronik’s home monitoring system automatically transmits data to physicians. Other systems require patients to manually send their information, which can cause inconsistencies in the event patients forget or just simply don’t want to. “With our device, all the patients has to do is keep their device chrged, versus our competitors, [where] the patient has to either put the device on top of where te implant is or they have to press a button to trasmit the information,” Basu said.

  • Will the system make money? Biotronik’s home monitoring system is already a leading option in its market, but the company hopes the TRUECOIN results helps it maintain its position. “Our home monitoring system is success already in the market, but this just reinforces that ours significantly reduces all-cause mortality,” Basu said.
  • The system is cost-effective, saves time, reduces the risk of unnecessary hospitalizations and gives physicians more time to monitor patients without having to see each one in back-to-back appointments.

    Working with Server Certificates

    To enable HTTPS connections to your website or application in AWS, you need an SSL/TLS server certificate. You can use a server certificate provided by AWS Certificate Manager (ACM) or one that you obtained from an external provider. You can use ACM or IAM to store and deploy server certificates.

    ACM is the preferred tool to provision, manage, and deploy your server certificates. With ACM you can request a certificate or deploy an existing ACM or external certificate to AWS resources. Certificates provided by ACM are free and automatically renew. You can use ACM to manage server certificates from the console or programmatically. However, ACM is only available in select regions. To learn which regions support ACM, see the AWS Certificate Manager section of the AWS General Reference. For more information about using ACM, see the AWS Certificate Manager User Guide .

    Use IAM as a certificate manager only when you must support HTTPS connections in a region that is not supported by ACM. IAM supports deploying server certificates in all regions, but you must obtain your certificate from an external provider for use with AWS. You cannot upload an ACM certificate to IAM. Additionally, you cannot manage your certificates from the IAM Console. You must upload, retrieve, manage, or delete your server certificates programmatically.

    Uploading a Server Certificate (IAM API)

    To upload a server certificate to IAM, you must provide the certificate and its matching private key. When the certificate is not self-signed, you must also provide a certificate chain. (You don’t need a certificate chain when uploading a self-signed certificate.) Before you upload a certificate, ensure that you have all these items and that they meet the following criteria:

    The certificate must be valid at the time of upload. You cannot upload a certificate before its validity period begins (the certificate’s NotBefore date) or after it expires (the certificate’s NotAfter date).

    The private key must be unencrypted. You cannot upload a private key that is protected by a password or passphrase. For help decrypting an encrypted private key, see Troubleshooting.

    The certificate, private key, and certificate chain must all be PEM-encoded. For help converting these items to PEM format, see Troubleshooting.

    To use the IAM API to upload a certificate, send an UploadServerCertificate request. The following example shows how to do this with the AWS Command Line Interface (AWS CLI). The example assumes the following:

    The PEM-encoded certificate is stored in a file named Certificate.pem.

    The PEM-encoded certificate chain is stored in a file named CertificateChain.pem.

    The PEM-encoded, unencrypted private key is stored in a file named PrivateKey.pem.

    To use the following example command, replace these file names with your own and replace ExampleCertificate with a name for your uploaded certificate. Type the command on one continuous line. The following example includes line breaks and extra spaces to make it easier to read.

    When the preceding command is successful, it returns metadata about the uploaded certificate, including its Amazon Resource Name (ARN). its friendly name, its identifier (ID), its expiration date, and more.

    If you are uploading a server certificate to use with Amazon CloudFront, you must specify a path using the –path option. The path must begin with /cloudfront and must include a trailing slash (for example, /cloudfront/test/ ).

    To use the AWS Tools for Windows PowerShell to upload a certificate, use Publish-IAMServerCertificate.

    Retrieving a Server Certificate (IAM API)

    To use the IAM API to retrieve a certificate, send a GetServerCertificate request. The following example shows how to do this with the AWS CLI. Replace ExampleCertificate with the name of the certificate to retrieve.

    When the preceding command is successful, it returns the certificate, the certificate chain (if one was uploaded), and metadata about the certificate.

    You cannot download or retrieve a private key from IAM after you upload it.

    To use the AWS Tools for Windows PowerShell to retrieve a certificate, use Get-IAMServerCertificate.

    Listing Server Certificates (IAM API)

    To use the IAM API to list your uploaded server certificates, send a ListServerCertificates request. The following example shows how to do this with the AWS CLI.

    When the preceding command is successful, it returns a list that contains metadata about each certificate.

    To use the AWS Tools for Windows PowerShell to list your uploaded server certificates, use Get-IAMServerCertificates.

    Renaming a Server Certificate or Updating its Path (IAM API)

    To use the IAM API to rename a server certificate or update its path, send an UpdateServerCertificate request. The following example shows how to do this with the AWS CLI.

    To use the following example command, replace the old and new certificate names and the certificate path, and type the command on one continuous line. The following example includes line breaks and extra spaces to make it easier to read.

    Deleting a Server Certificate (IAM API)

    Troubleshooting

    Before you can upload a certificate to IAM, you must make sure that the certificate, private key, and certificate chain are all PEM-encoded. You must also ensure that the private key is unencrypted. See the following examples.

    Example PEM-encoded certificate

    A certificate chain contains one or more certificates. The following example contains three certificates, but your certificate chain might contain more or fewer.

    If these items are not in the right format for uploading to IAM, you can use OpenSSL to convert them to the right format.

    To convert a certificate or certificate chain from DER to PEM

    Use the OpenSSL x509 command. as in the following example. In the following example command, replace Certificate.der with the name of the file that contains your DER-encoded certificate. Replace Certificate.pem with the desired name of the output file to contain the PEM-encoded certificate.

    To convert a private key from DER to PEM

    Use the OpenSSL rsa command. as in the following example. In the following example command, replace PrivateKey.der with the name of the file that contains your DER-encoded private key. Replace PrivateKey.pem with the desired name of the output file to contain the PEM-encoded private key.

    To decrypt an encrypted private key (remove the password or passphrase)

    Use the OpenSSL rsa command. as in the following example. To use the following example command, replace EncryptedPrivateKey.pem with the name of the file that contains your encrypted private key. Replace PrivateKey.pem with the desired name of the output file to contain the PEM-encoded unencrypted private key.

    To convert a certificate bundle from PKCS#12 (PFX) to PEM

    Use the OpenSSL pkcs12 command. as in the following example. In the following example command, replace CertificateBundle.p12 with the name of the file that contains your PKCS#12-encoded certificate bundle. Replace CertificateBundle.pem with the desired name of the output file to contain the PEM-encoded certificate bundle.

    To convert a certificate bundle from PKCS#7 to PEM

    Use the OpenSSL pkcs7 command. as in the following example. In the following example command, replace CertificateBundle.p7b with the name of the file that contains your PKCS#7-encoded certificate bundle. Castlepoint National Insurance Company. Case No. CPF-16-515183 ( Conservation Order ). Pursuant to the Conservation Order, the California Insurance Commissioner has been appointed as the statutory Conservator of Castlepoint National Insurance Company ( Castlepoint ). The Conservation Order authorizes and empowers the Commissioner, through his Conservation Liquidation Office, to conserve Castlepoint and its assets for the benefit of Castlepoint s claimants, creditors and shareholder, as provided in Sections 1010 through 1062 of the Insurance Code of the State of California. Based on the data, we estimate that if the governments of 90 economies had applied best practice in regulating business entry in 2012, more than 45 million days of entrepreneurs time could have been saved.
