It looks like there are more delays in the effort to build a new hotel at Sacramento International Airport. The developer says he needs additional time to start work because of a shortage of sub-contractors. Sonya Sorich with the Sacramento Business Journal says the project has been in-the-works for a long time.

“A Los Angeles-based developer has been working for four years to bring this hotel to the airport, which would have the Hyatt Place brand,” says Sorich. “But the county has been seeking a hotel at the airport for more than a decade. Now if you remember, the previous host airport hotel was demolished when officials decided to expand the new terminal and the parking garage at the airport.”

The earliest estimate for when construction on the project could begin is now fall of 2018.

The location is perfect, although my husband did complain about the noise from the nearby bars. There is good parking and it is a perfect place to start a tour of the FSU campus. It is a good place to spend 1 night for a low price. They were able to find us a non-smoking room after initially booking us a smoking room. They were helpful and kind. The room is outdated, but clean.

Now, the other stuff:
The first impression was poor. The guy at the front desk (once he showed up) was apparently having a bad day and wanted to spread the feeling.
The surface of the toilet seat delaminating. How do they ensure its cleanliness?
There was a considerable amount of grime in the bottom of the shower.
There was a thick layer of dirt on the window sill. While this is not a huge issue by itself, it does show a careless approach to cleaning.
The TV belongs in a museum. No joke!
The wifi was advertised as free. That’s technically true, but is was so unbelievably slow that is was unusable. We ended up using my cell-phone’s data.
We were supplied with one very thin small piece of soap. I applaud efforts to cut down on waste, but this was ridiculous.

And the final impressions:
This seemed to me to be a place where cost-cutting had gone to extremes. However, interestingly, the same person showed up to the front desk when we were leaving. He was quite friendly, so maybe the day before just was a bad day for him.

I stayed at this hotel for a FSU game. It is literally adjacent to campus and perfect it that is your goal. It is built into a side of a hill, and I’m not sure if there is an elevator if you have a cane or wheelchair. The room was basic, quiet, and clean, but has had hard use. There is a McDonald’s across the street. Hotel prices in this area can skyrocket for no logical reason ($200-300/night). This is a good choice if that happens.

We went for fsu orientation and stayed here because it was closest to out daughters dorm. It was okay for a cheap rate, clean room, no breakfast. We went on a wed and a riot broke out across the street that had to be broken up by police, so not the best area, but overall fine.

My room was clean the ceiling was damaged badly and had mold on it from what appears to be a leak in the room above. It was cheap and that was what I was looking for when I booked it so I got what I paid for.

Everything I needed at a great price–close to hospital (for visiting my friend), on campus for security, walk to variety of eateries, short drive to shopping, parking space, clean, room smelled fresh good! My trip was unexpected so really appreciated the microwave, fridge, iron board, big TV, comfy bed, full size tub/shower, toiletries in bathroom.

The Bawdy Under the Bed

In The Baby Train, folklorist Jan Harold Brunvand writes that he first heard the dead body found under hotel bed legend in 1991. Every version that came to him mentioned a Las Vegas hotel, but the lack of checkable details led him to believe this was an apocryphal tale.

Okay, so we can date the appearance of this legend to 1991. Unlike a number of other such gruesome tales, this legend appears to have sprung from a misremembering of any one of a number of actual news items, with the talebearer shifting certain details so that deaths which took place in anonymous little motels along Interstates are said to have happened in Las Vegas, America s own Sin City, and victims who d (usually) done little else amiss than be in the wrong place at the wrong time and/or take up with questionable company were transformed through the magic of retelling into prostitutes.

Dead bodies get stashed in the box spring or the bed s pedestal more often than you d want to believe. What s more, a fair number of them are only discovered days later after the new tenant complains about a persistent and disagreeable odor.

In each of the following cases not only were bodies discovered under hotel beds, but it was investigations of the smell of decomposition that led to their discoveries.

On 10 July 2003, a man checked into the Capri Motel, just east of downtown Kansas City, and began complaining about a foul odor in his room. Management told him nothing could be done about the problem, and he spent three nights in his room before checking out because he could no longer stand the smell. When the cleaning staff came in to make up the room on 13 July. they lifted the mattress and underneath found a man s body in an advanced stage of decomposition.

On 10 June 1999 the rapidly decomposing remains of 64-year-old Saul Hernandez were discovered inside the bed in Room 112 at the Burgundy Motor Inn in Atlantic City, New Jersey. A German couple had spent the night sleeping over Hernandez s remains, and it was their complaint to the manager about the smell in their room which led to the discovery of the corpse.

In July 1996 a woman s body was found under a mattress in the Colorado Boulevard Travelodge in Pasadena, CA. Apparently the motel s staff discovered her ten days after her demise and only after guests had complained for several days of a foul odor coming from that room.

There were two stashed-and-smelly body cases in Florida in 1994. (Further adding to the confusability of these stories taking place in the same year and the same state, in both instances the next tenants those rooms had were German tourists.) In August 1994 in Fort Lauderdale, hotel staff discovered the body of 47-year-old Bryan Gregory tucked under a platform bed. Though the staff had themselves noticed the strange smell for days, they only set about looking for its source after a German couple spent the night in that room and afterwards complained about the odor.

In March 1994 the body of 24-year-old Josefina Martinez was found underneath a bed at the Traveler s Hotel near Miami International Airport. Again, the discovery was prompted by an aggrieved German tourist upset about a foul odor in his room.

In Virginia in 1989, Jerry Lee Dunbar disposed of the remains of two victims this way: 27-year-old Deirdre Smith, who was discovered in May under the floor of a motel room on Route 1, and 29-year-old Marilyn Graham, who turned up in June under a bed in the Alexandria Econo Lodge. In Smith s case, the killer first kept her body partially hidden under his bed for two days, then subsequently placed it in the crawl space under the carpeted floor. Her presence seemingly didn t bother him, because he didn t move out of that room until three or four weeks later. Both girls bodies were eventually found after other guests complained about the stink.

In Mineola, New York, motel in 1988, a body turned up in a box spring. The remains of 29-year-old Mary Jean DeOliviera were found at the Oceanside Motel. Again, the body was discovered days later and only after other patrons complained about the smell. At least two other guests unknowingly cohabited with the body before it was found, and at least one guest refused to stay in that room because of the smell.

Here s a change of pace not a murder, but a death by misadventure. In Rosedale, Maryland in 1987, an unidentified man died of a drug overdose after one of the thirty-four balloons of heroin he d swallowed burst. His partner stashed the corpse under their motel bed, then split. Three days later, the family the room was next rented to complained about the odor, and this led to the body s discovery.

One of the oldest smelly body left under the bed sightings comes from 1982. Richard Kuklinski, Daniel Deppner, and Gary Smith often teamed together to run auto theft scams. Kuklinski and Deppner decided to kill Smith, and they accomplished this by feeding him a cyanide-laced hamburger in a North Bergen, New Jersey, motel room. Kuklinkski finished off Smith by strangling him when watching Smith die of poisoning proved tiresome. Smith s body was stuffed under the bed and left there. It was found four days later, on 27 December 1982. During the intervening four days, the room had been rented to others each night. Guests had wrinkled their noses at the smell, but none thought to look under the bed.

That case has seemingly been topped by one in which Sony Millbrook of Memphis, Tennessee, was reported missing on 27 January 2010 after she failed to pick up her children from school. Forty-seven days later, on 15 March 2010, homicide investigators were called to the room of a Budget Inn motel where Millbrook had been living just prior to her disappearance, her body having just been discovered inside the frame of the bed there even though the room had reportedly been cleaned and rented several times since her disappearance almost seven weeks earlier.

There are, of course, numerous other cases of dead bodies being left under hotel beds, but I ve chosen not to report on these because they lack the key element of the legend: complaints about the presence of a horrific smell leading to the corpse s discovery. What gives this urban legend its chills-down-the-spine gruesomeness is the body s being found only after an unsuspecting traveler spends the night sleeping above it. That clearly happened in at least some of the cases mentioned here (and perhaps in others where the news reports stated only that hotel guests had complained without specifying which guests).

Urban legends tend to localize to where we believe they likely would have happened. It s easy to understand how in each of the versions Brunvand related that Las Vegas was always named as the city where the corpse reposed, for Vegas is indeed viewed as Sin City, USA. Much easier to believe that the unsuspecting traveler shared his room with a moldering corpse in Las Vegas than it is to (rightly) place that occurrence in small-town New York, Virginia, or Maryland. Especially when dealing with a half-remembered true story, it s natural for the obvious details to replace facts that have been misplaced due to ordinary fuzziness of memory. One, after all, does not let a lack of certainty stand in the way of a good story.

Keep in mind that the Deirdre Smith (1989, Virginia), Marilyn Graham (1989, Virginia), Mary Jean DeOliviera (1988, New York), John Doe (1987, Maryland), and Gary Smith (1982, New York) cases antedate 1991. Gruesome finds like those tend to get heavily reported on, and that certainly happened with Smith, Graham and DeOliviera (the cites below don t begin to do justice to the coverage these discoveries got they were reported on by a double handful of various papers across the USA). It is because of that widespread coverage that I lean towards this legend s having sprung to life out of a true story whose location got shifted from Your Town, USA (where only nice people live) to Sin City (where life and room rates are cheap).

Sightings: Look for this legend in the 1995 film Four Rooms . This legend was also the subject of a July 2014 fake news article.

We have been to PEI more times than I can count, but until this trip we had never stayed in Charlottetown or in a hotel. Previous trips have all been camping, in cabins or roadside motels and for the last many trip always with our kids. This was our first adult trip to PEI in close to 25 years.

We booked the Delta not only because it was a name we knew but also because of it’s location. Our goal was to be able to park and explore the city with the Delta as our home base. It worked out perfectly.

I booked a King City View room. It might have been city view, but honestly it was still great!

The bed was comfortable, the pillows were great. There is a large sitting area with a sofa and a flat screen TV. The room was very clean.

Check In and Check Out were so simple. I used their app to do a pre-checkin and the rooms keys were waiting when we arrived. Couldn’t have been any easier.

All the staff we dealt with were friendly and helpful.

The location of the Delta is perfect. You can walk to the water, downtown or just explore and you still stay fairly central to the hotel.

I would most definitely stay here again and hope to book another Delta soon!

This hotel is in a great location in Charlottetown. You can walk out the front door and you are literally on the waterfront where you can stroll to Peakes Wharf which has live music daily, lots of great restaurants and ice cream and gorgeous views along the boardwalk. You can also stroll to the Confederation Centre of the Arts, Victoria Row, Province House – really the location could not be better. We had a view of the water from our room and it was gorgeous! I don’t think the stay would have been as special without that view so it is well worth asking for a view of the water. The room was very large with two queen beds, a closet, dresser, mini-fridge, nice big bathroom and my favourite part, a lovely cushioned window seat overlooking the water. The lobby is beautiful and the staff were very attentive. We did not use the restaurant but it looked really nice. The workout area and pool were a bit dated but everyone still enjoyed the facilities. You had to pay for parking so we ended up using the valet service for a few more dollars a day. The only strike against the hotel was the elevators were slow, but honestly, talk about a first world problem!!

See separate review on this, the Water’s Edge restaurant is excellent (pricey and worth it) for dinner. We went out for breakfast and lunch, lots of options nearby.

Gym
Well equipped, two rooms, one for cardio and machines, another full of weights, everything you need even for hard core lifters.
Pool and hot tub by gym, clean and well kept.

Service
We had great service, we valet parked and the vehicle was always promptly brought around, front desk and housekeeping and restaurant all provided excellent service.

We recommend this hotel.

There were problems right from check in! They were terribly understaffed,their check in kiosks were ridiculously over complicated or broken! There were multiple bulbs burned out in our room,the wifi wouldn’t connect the first day, the tv in the bathroom didn’t work! Multiple staff were downright rude,one wouldn’t look up from his phone while he was talking to me! Have been staying here since 1985, after this stay I will NEVER be back.

From the minute we checked in everything was wrong! we booked for 3 nights and on the second day our room keys did not work, when we went to the lobby they said we were supposed to be checking out! our room only got sort of cleaned once! even though we paid for parking when we checked in out keys didnt work for the parking we even had to pay to exit the parking lot so we over paid, and on check out the day they wanted to over charge us by 1 night! I’ve been staying at this hotel for years and never had a problem, but after this last horrible experience we will never stay here again! be ware if you book a room here, make sure you check your invoice so you dont get over charged!

Rooms were outdated and request for all rooms to be connecting was not honored although I requested this a month in advance. None of the decor matched on all 3 rooms. One room did not have a mini fridge or coffee maker. Key cards deactivated twice locking me out and the thermostat on my sister’s room broke and after 3 requests it was never fixed. Room went down to 61 degrees. Had to buy sweatshirts to stay in the room.

Visited Las Vegas to see the Hall and Oates Concert primarily but stretched it into a 4 night adventure. Husband had free Southwest tickets and I’m a Diamond rated player so the Flamingo graciously offered comped 4 nights in a Go Room. Yes, I know this isn’t the fanciest CET property but we like things just a little less fancy. The Diamond Check In folks are far too accommodating. No waiting, every visit in there they offered several bottles of water, print out of boarding passes, late checkouts. We opted in for the no maid service and received $30 in free food. And yes, the Resort Fees are waived so free wifi.

Our Go room on the 26th floor overlooking the Bellagio Fountains and had a nice little lounge chair right at the window where I would read and drink my morning coffee from the little coffee maker in the room. Coffee shop right where the elevator doors open – Diamond line there also. The room had a king Size bed, Large flat screen TV and of course the TV in the bathroom mirror. Loved the bedside switch to open or close the window treatments though we pretty much left them open the whole time. Though I’m an old married woman I do prefer a little more than a frosted glass door separating the Bathroom but hey it still is pretty cool. No waiting on elevators and no lines for anything. The rooms were perfectly adequate, clean and quiet. Even though we had no maid service (opted out) we left the maids some cash and several unredeemed cash out vouchers for several casinos we didn’t get back to – one was for over $20 bucks alone!

The Adult pool is fabulous but if I were to say anything less than glowing it was that you couldn’t bring in your coffee, water or drink. Husband indulged in a few $24 rum frozen drinks and a few waters. He loved the drinks. Lots of music and young adults and no signs of trouble.

No disappointments in the Flamingo. It is so nicely located, very affordable (even if you’re paying for it), the staff is very responsive. I didn’t go to the Diamond lounge simply because we were always headed some place else.

I do want to mention what I consider a hidden gem in Las Vegas – the Tuscany Casino. Very clean, not crowded, and Marilyn’s Café has excellent service and food. Though, like many places it is a smoking Casino but the smell was far from noticeable. I had Prime Rib on two different occasions which was unbelievably delicious and perfectly cooked. Hubster has the all you can eat Crab Legs on Friday – they do not even wait for you to finish one plate before offering another. I think it was like $13.99. For those folks who love the slot machine Cashman there are lots of them here. I won every time except one when I put in $60 bucks, played for 2 1/2 hours and cashed out with $47. Drink service was great. I’ll be visiting this little gem on each visit in the future.

Spent two evenings down on Fremont street – even at midnight I was amazed at how many small kids are out with their parents. The Hash House a Go Go in the Plaza had quick service and I got the tower of fried green tomatoes toped with excellent chicken salad. Gambling dollars lasted here an appropriate amount of time. Husband did very well with roulette.

Rented a car on Wednesday and drove through the desert in search of old mining towns and such. They do tours of this nature but none that would fit our schedule so I read about all the places they went and we did the same tour but in reverse. It was an incredible day and we visited Eldorado Canyon, Oatman, Chloride, Searchlight and just pulled over here and there just in amazement. Husband fell in love with Laughlin and is already searching real estate for a little place there. The only disappointing thing was the new bridge over the Hoover Dam – you can’t even tell you’re driving over the dam with the sides of the bridge so high. I know it’s the safe thing to do, I get it. But if I had my way the sides would be see through.

Used Uber for the vast majority of our transportation and with very little exception. It was super easy to find pick up locations, shared rides, and because there are so many around the waiting time was typically less than 5 minutes. Soooo much cheaper than other modes of transportation. Love that Uber now allows you to tip through the app.

The concert was great of course but a tip for you there: If you’re going to a concert just walk. The traffic line turning off the strip to take you to the T-Mobile Arena moves at the speed of cold molasses.

All in all it was a great little get a way. Lost exactly the amount I planned on though my husband ended up coming home with the same amount he had when he arrived. We’ve stayed at all of the CET properties on previous trips (I’m a sucker for comped rooms) yet I can’t help but feel places like Flamingo will become a thing of the past.

Sonya Sorich with the Sacramento Business Journal says the project has been in-the-works for a long time.

    “A Los Angeles-based developer has been working for four years to bring this hotel to the airport, which would have the Hyatt Place brand,” says Sorich. “But the county has been seeking a hotel at the airport for more than a decade. Now if you remember, the previous host airport hotel was demolished when officials decided to expand the new terminal and the parking garage at the airport.”

    The earliest estimate for when construction on the project could begin is now fall of 2018.

    Sonya also tells us about: the Lincoln City Council’s vote this week to ban any new large solar arrays through the end of next May; and changes to the Macy’s in downtown Sacramento.
