Improve your local ranking on Google – Google My Business Help, local

Improve your local ranking on Google

Local results appear for people who search for businesses and places near their location. They’re shown in a number of places across Maps and Search. For example, you’ll probably see local results if you search for “Italian restaurant” from your mobile device. Google will try to show you the kind of nearby restaurant that you’d like to visit. In the image below, Google uses local results to suggest some options.

You can improve your business’s local ranking by using Google My Business.

Can’t find your business? Improve your info.

You may find that your business doesn’t appear for relevant searches in your area. To maximize how often your customers see your business in local search results, complete the following tasks in Google My Business. Providing and updating business information in Google My Business can help your business’s local ranking on Google and enhance your presence in Search and Maps.

Enter complete data

Local results favor the most relevant results for each search, and businesses with complete and accurate information are easier to match with the right searches. Make sure that you’ve entered all of your business information in Google My Business, so customers know more about what you do, where you are, and when they can visit you. Provide information like (but not limited to) your physical address, phone number, and category. Make sure to keep this information updated as your business changes. Learn how to edit your business information

Verify your location(s)

Verify your business locations to give them the best opportunity to appear for users across Google products, like Maps and Search. Learn more about verification

Keep your hours accurate

Entering and updating your opening hours, including special hours for holidays and special events, lets potential customers know when you’re available and gives them confidence that when they travel to your location, it will be open. Learn how to edit your hours

Manage and respond to reviews

Interact with customers by responding to reviews that they leave about your business. Responding to reviews shows that you value your customers and the feedback that they leave about your business. High-quality, positive reviews from your customers will improve your business’s visibility and increase the likelihood that a potential customer will visit your location. Encourage customers to leave feedback by creating a link they can click to write reviews. Learn more

Add photos

Adding photos to your listings shows people your goods and services, and can help you tell the story of your business. Accurate and appealing pictures may also show potential customers that your business offers what they’re searching for. Learn more

How Google determines local ranking

Local results are based primarily on relevance, distance, and prominence. These factors are combined to help find the best match for your search. For example, Google algorithms might decide that a business that’s farther away from your location is more likely to have what you’re looking for than a business that’s closer, and therefore rank it higher in local results.

Relevance

Relevance refers to how well a local listing matches what someone is searching for. Adding complete and detailed business information can help Google better understand your business and match your listing to relevant searches.

Distance

Just like it sounds–how far is each potential search result from the location term used in a search? If a user doesn’t specify a location in their search, Google will calculate distance based on what’s known about their location.

Prominence

Prominence refers to how well-known a business is. Some places are more prominent in the offline world, and search results try to reflect this in local ranking. For example, famous museums, landmark hotels, or well-known store brands that are familiar to many people are also likely to be prominent in local search results.

Prominence is also based on information that Google has about a business from across the web (like links, articles, and directories). Google review count and score are factored into local search ranking: more reviews and positive ratings will probably improve a business’s local ranking. Your position in web results is also a factor, so SEO best practices also apply to local search optimization.

There’s no way to request or pay for a better local ranking on Google. We do our best to keep the details of the search algorithm confidential to make the ranking system as fair as possible for everyone.

Someone else verified my business – Google My Business Help, business listing.#Business

Someone else verified my business

Some businesses have already been verified by an owner or manager and have a Google My Business listing. The listing is owned by the person who verified the business.

See if your business has already been verified by following these steps:

  1. Navigate to Google My Business.
  2. Sign in with the Google account you use to manage your business.
  3. Search for your business using its name and address.
  4. Click on your business in the search results.
  5. If you see a dialog letting you know that someone else has verified the business, choose one of the options below.

Try a different email address

You may have already verified your business using a different email address. If you have more than one Google account (for example, one for personal messages and one for business communications), sign out of Google My Business and then sign in with another Google account.

You will see any listings that you have verified with this Google account. If you still don’t see any listings in any of your Google accounts, you will need to contact the current listing owner.

Request access

You can contact the current listing owner through Google My Business to request access to own or manage the listing.

To request access from the current listing owner:

  1. Navigate to Google My Business.
  2. Sign in to Google with the account you use to manage your business.
  3. Enter the name or address of your business, then select it from the search results.
    • You may see a dialog showing part of the email address that verified the listing. If you manage this email address, sign in to that account to access your business listing.
  4. Fill out the form. The current listing owner may need to contact you for more info, so you won’t be able to submit your request without sharing your contact details with them.
  5. Click Submit.
  6. The current listing owner will receive an email asking them to get in touch with you, and you’ll receive a confirmation email. Check on the status of your request by clicking the link in your confirmation email.
  7. Allow a full 7 days for the current listing owner to respond to your request.
    • If you don’t hear back after 7 days, you can click View Request in the original confirmation email and follow the steps to request ownership.
    • If the request is denied, you’ll be notified by email. You can click Appeal Now in the email to appeal the denied request.

You can also attempt to contact the current owner directly using the contact information in their business listing. Include instructions to add you as a listing manager or transfer ownership of the listing to you.

You Can Still Get a Free Business Listing on Yahoo, business listing.#Business

You Can Still Get a Free Business Listing on Yahoo

December 23, 2015

About Eric Shanfelt

Eric is the Founder and CEO of Local Marketing Institute. He has over 20 years of experience in digital marketing with multiple B2B and consumer media companies. Eric also has a passion for local businesses . especially the local microbreweries in Northern Colorado where he lives.

Believe it or not, 1 out of every 8 searches in the U.S. are still done through Yahoo, so you want your local business to be properly represented there. Yahoo has gone through a lot of confusing changes recently, but the good news is you can still claim a free local business listing. Here s how.

Earlier this year, Yahoo announced it was spinning off its small business division into a separate company called Aabaco. They said the local business services would be branded under the name of Luminate. To further complicate things, Yahoo then outsourced management of its local business listings to Yext.

Now Luminate is gone, Yahoo Small Business has become Aabaco Small Business, and Aabaco outsources to Yext to manage local business listing under a product called Localworks.

Confused yet? You re not alone!

Don t worry about all of this. There s only one thing that s important here s how can still get a free local business listing on Yahoo.

How to Claim a Free Local Business Listing on Yahoo

  1. Go to Yahoo, search for your business, and you should see a link to Add or update your business .
  2. That link will take you to http://www.yext.com/pl/yahoo-claims/index.html (you can just go here directly if you prefer).
  3. Enter your business information and click Find My Listings .
  4. You ll then see page that is powered by Yext. It s a bit intimidating with an error rate and all of these warnings that you re not standing out and not verified through Yext. For now, don t worry about all of this, just click the big Continue button.
  5. Next, you can update the information about your listing. Complete this page fully and don t forget to use the same NAP (name, address, phone) that you use everywhere for your business. Click the Continue button when you re done.
  6. Yext will then present you with four paid plans, but immediately below these plans is a tiny link that says, Claim your Basic Listing only on Yahoo click that link.
  7. You re now at the Yahoo Basic Listing Checkout page. Complete the checkout and click Place Order (it s free).
  8. Yext will send you an email to verify your email address. Click the link, create a password, then login to your account.
  9. The final step is to verify you represent this business. The easiest method is to have them call you, but there are other methods as well.

That s it! You now have claimed and can manage your free listing on Yahoo.

Here s a video walk-through of the entire process.

BTW the free Yahoo listing is only one of the 11 Local Business Listings You Must Claim Beyond Google. If you re not a VIP already, you can try a VIP Pass for only $1 now and then learn about the other local listings that will help you grow your business.

Eric is the Founder and CEO of Local Marketing Institute. He has over 20 years of experience in digital marketing with multiple B2B and consumer media companies. Eric also has a passion for local businesses. especially the local microbreweries in Northern Colorado where he lives.

To further complicate things, Yahoo then outsourced management of its local business listings to Yext .

32 Business Listing Sites That Will Get You Referral Traffic

Not all online searches and transactions are performed on search engines. Directories and social media websites expand your reach and have some of the hottest leads on the web at an inexpensive cost. Whether free or paid, these marketplaces are worth spending your advertising budget on.

Should You Submit to Online Directories?

Yes! You should submit your business information and website to relevant directories, and I’ve included a list below. This list is a great sources of leads, consumer reviews and referral traffic. Free or paid, it is important you control your business profile because you need to engage and advertise to consumers where they want to be. Once you claim your profile, update any information that is inaccurate. and be sure to provide details about your business that are a selling point and may draw a new customer in. Most importantly, claim ownership now so that you can respond to positive and negative reviews of your business in the future.

How Many Is Too Many?

There is no set number of directories your business should or shouldn t be in. It s the quality and relevancy of the directories that is important to keep in mind. Links from spammy websites, hacked websites or low quality sites constitute bad neighborhoods that you don’t want to belong to. Linking to your site from these bad neighborhoods on purpose will make you a target for manual penalties from the search engines.

How to Tell Which Directories Are Legit

I have put together a list of 32 directories I recommend, below. But there are many more worth considering. If you re interested in submitting your site to a directory, take a look at the businesses listed and if you would feel comfortable calling on those businesses and they are relevant to your business, then you should feel safe submitting to and being a part of that neighborhood. The quality of the sites you are listed in is important, so stick to the best. The goal is to make sure that the most accurate, up-to-date information about your business gets published where your potential customers are searching.

Getting Started

On any of these sites, search to see if your business is already listed, then claim control of your existing listing instead of submitting a duplicate. For new submissions, I’ve linked to the deepest page that can help you set up a new business profile quickly. Also if you have a directory that you think should be included, please feel free to mention it in the comments.

Need help submitting? This can be very time consuming, and we can help. You can start by evaluating the accuracy of your listing using our free tool, and claim control quickly and easily by syndicating your information through our network, or we can do the legwork for you.

You Can Still Get a Free Business Listing on Yahoo

December 23, 2015

About Eric Shanfelt

Eric is the Founder and CEO of Local Marketing Institute. He has over 20 years of experience in digital marketing with multiple B2B and consumer media companies. Eric also has a passion for local businesses. especially the local microbreweries in Northern Colorado where he lives.

To further complicate things, Yahoo then outsourced management of its local business listings to Yext .
