Improve your local ranking on Google – Google My Business Help, local

Improve your local ranking on Google

Local results appear for people who search for businesses and places near their location. They’re shown in a number of places across Maps and Search. For example, you’ll probably see local results if you search for “Italian restaurant” from your mobile device. Google will try to show you the kind of nearby restaurant that you’d like to visit. In the image below, Google uses local results to suggest some options.

You can improve your business’s local ranking by using Google My Business.

Can’t find your business? Improve your info.

You may find that your business doesn’t appear for relevant searches in your area. To maximize how often your customers see your business in local search results, complete the following tasks in Google My Business. Providing and updating business information in Google My Business can help your business’s local ranking on Google and enhance your presence in Search and Maps.

Enter complete data

Local results favor the most relevant results for each search, and businesses with complete and accurate information are easier to match with the right searches. Make sure that you’ve entered all of your business information in Google My Business, so customers know more about what you do, where you are, and when they can visit you. Provide information like (but not limited to) your physical address, phone number, and category. Make sure to keep this information updated as your business changes. Keep your hours accurate

High-quality, positive reviews from your customers will improve your business’s visibility and increase the likelihood that a potential customer will visit your location. Encourage customers to leave feedback by creating a link they can click to write reviews. Learn more

Add photos

Adding photos to your listings shows people your goods and services, and can help you tell the story of your business. Accurate and appealing pictures may also show potential customers that your business offers what they’re searching for. Learn more

How Google determines local ranking

Local results are based primarily on relevance, distance, and prominence. These factors are combined to help find the best match for your search. For example, Google algorithms might decide that a business that’s farther away from your location is more likely to have what you’re looking for than a business that’s closer, and therefore rank it higher in local results.

Relevance

Relevance refers to how well a local listing matches what someone is searching for. Adding complete and detailed business information can help Google better understand your business and match your listing to relevant searches.

Distance

Just like it sounds–how far is each potential search result from the location term used in a search? If a user doesn’t specify a location in their search, Google will calculate distance based on what’s known about their location.

Prominence

Prominence refers to how well-known a business is. Some places are more prominent in the offline world, and search results try to reflect this in local ranking. For example, famous museums, landmark hotels, or well-known store brands that are familiar to many people are also likely to be prominent in local search results.

Prominence is also based on information that Google has about a business from across the web (like links, articles, and directories). Google review count and score are factored into local search ranking: more reviews and positive ratings will probably improve a business’s local ranking. Your position in web results is also a factor, so SEO best practices also apply to local search optimization.

There’s no way to request or pay for a better local ranking on Google. We do our best to keep the details of the search algorithm confidential to make the ranking system as fair as possible for everyone.

Buying Local: How It Boosts the Economy, local businesses.#Local #businesses

Buying Local: How It Boosts the Economy

“Buy Local” you see the decal in the store window, the sign at the farmer’s market, the bright, cheerful logos for Local First Arizona, Think Boise First, Our Milwaukee, and homegrown versions across the states. The apparent message is “let’s-support-local-business”, a kind of community boosterism. But buying close to home may be more than a feel-good, it’s-worth-paying-more-for-local matter. A number of researchers and organizations are taking a closer look at how money flows, and what they’re finding shows the profound economic impact of keeping money in town and how the fate of many communities around the nation and the world increasingly depend on it.

At the most basic level, when you buy local more money stays in the community. The New Economics Foundation, an independent economic think tank based in London, compared what happens when people buy produce at a supermarket vs. a local farmer’s market or community supported agriculture (CSA) program and found that twice the money stayed in the community when folks bought locally. “That means those purchases are twice as efficient in terms of keeping the local economy alive,” says author and NEF researcher David Boyle. (See the top 10 food trends of 2008.)

Indeed, says Boyle, many local economies are languishing not because too little cash comes in, but as a result of what happens to that money. “Money is like blood. It needs to keep moving around to keep the economy going,” he says, noting that when money is spent elsewhere at big supermarkets, non-locally owned utilities and other services such as on-line retailers “it flows out, like a wound.” By shopping at the corner store instead of the big box, consumers keep their communities from becoming what the NEF calls “ghost towns” (areas devoid of neighborhood shops and services) or “clone towns”, where Main Street now looks like every other Main Street with the same fast-food and retail chains.

According to Susan Witt, Executive Director of the E.F. Schumacher Society, “buy local” campaigns serve another function: alerting a community about gaps in the local market. For instance, if consumers keep turning to on-line or big-box stores for a particular product say, socks this signals an opportunity for someone local to make and sell socks. This is the way product innovations get made, says Witt. “The local producer adds creative elements that make either the product or materials used more appropriate to the place.” For example, an area where sheep are raised might make lambs wool socks and other goods.

The point is not that communities should suddenly seek to be self-sufficient in all ways, but rather, says Boyle, “to shift the balance. Can you produce more locally? Of course you can if the raw materials are there, and the raw materials are often human beings.”

And what about that higher cost of local goods? After all, big-box stores got to be big because their prices are low. Susan Witt says that the difference falls away once you consider the increase in local employment as well as the relationships that grow when people buy from people they know. (Plus, one could argue, lower transportation, and therefore environmental, costs, and you know what you’re getting which as we’ve recently seen with suspected contamination in toys and other products from China, can be a concern.)

There’s also the matter of local/regional resilience. Says Witt: “While now we’re largely a service-providing nation, we’re still just a generation away from being a nation of producers. The question is: what economic framework will help us reclaim those skills and that potential.” Say, for example, the exchange rates change or the price of oil rises (and it has started to creep up, if not at last summer’s pace) so that foreign-made goods are no longer cheap to import. We could find ourselves doubly stuck because domestic manufacturing is no longer set up to make all these products. While no community functions in isolation, supporting local trade helps “recreate the diversity of small businesses that are flexible and can adjust” to changing needs and market conditions, says Witt. (Read “How to Know When the Economy Is Turning Up.”)

Another argument for buying local is that it enhances the “velocity” of money, or circulation speed, in the area. The idea is that if currency circulates more quickly, the money passes through more hands and more people have had the benefit of the money and what it has purchased for them. “If you’re buying local and not at a chain or branch store, chances are that store is not making a huge profit,” says David Morris, Vice President of the Institute for Local Self-Reliance, a nonprofit economic research and development organization based in Minneapolis and Washington, D.C. “That means more goes into input costs supplies and upkeep, printing, advertising, paying employees which puts that money right back in the community.”

One way to really make sure money stays in the community is through creating a local currency. Christian Gelleri, a former Waldorf high school teacher in the Lake Chiem area in Germany, has launched a regional currency, the Chiemgauer, equivalent in value to the Euro. According to Gelleri, the Chiemgauer, accepted at more than 600 businesses in the region and with about $3,000,000 Euros worth in circulation, has three times the velocity of the Euro, circling through the economy an average of 18 times a year as opposed to 6. One reason for the fast turnaround is that the Chiemgauer is designed to encourage spending: there is a 2% demurrage fee for holding onto the bills beyond three months.

As an economic principle, velocity has been considered a constant. According to Gelleri, it was stable in the 1950s, ’60s, and ’70s but starting in the ’80s velocity has decreased as more money has been diverted to the financial sector. This scenario may benefit financial centers, but money tends to drain away from other places. Gelleri says that both the Euro and the U.S. dollar have slowed way down. “In the last several months velocity has declined sharply because there’s less GDP and more money,” he says. “The money doesn’t flow. More money is being printed, but it’s not going into circulation.”

As the nation limps through the recession, many towns and cities are hurting. “Buy-local” campaigns can help local economies withstand the downturn. Says Boyle: “For communities, this is a hopeful message in a recession because it’s not about how much money you’ve got, but how much you can keep circulating without letting it leak out.”

Introduction to Structured Data, Search, Google Developers, local businesses.#Local #businesses

Introduction to Structured Data

Google Search works hard to understand the content of a page. You can help us by providing explicit clues about the meaning of a page to Google by including structured data on the page. Structured data is a standardized format for providing information about a page and classifying the page content; for example, on a recipe page, what are the ingredients, the cooking time and temperature, the calories, and so on.

Google uses structured data that it finds on the web to understand the content of the page, as well as to gather information about the web and the world in general. For example, here is a JSON-LD structured data snippet that might appear on the contact page of the Unlimited Ball Bearings corporation, describing their contact information:

Google Search also uses structured data to enable special search result features and enhancements. For example, a recipe page with valid structured data is eligible to appear in a graphical search result, as shown here:

Local businesses

Because the structured data labels each individual element of the recipe, users can search for your recipe by ingredient, calorie count, cook time, and so on.

Structured data is coded using in-page markup on the page that the information applies to. The structured data on the page should describe the content of that page. You should not create blank or empty pages just to hold structured data; nor should you add structured data about information that is not visible to the user, even if the information is accurate. More technical and quality guidelines are described later in the guidelines section.

The Google Structured Data Testing Tool is an easy and useful tool for validating your structured data, and in some cases, previewing a feature in Google Search. Try it out:

Structured data format

This documentation describes which fields are required, recommended, or optional for structured data with special meaning to Google Search. Most Search structured data uses schema.org vocabulary, but you should rely on the documentation on developers.google.com as definitive for Google Search behavior, rather than the schema.org documentation. Attributes or objects not described here are not required by Google Search, even if marked as required by schema.org.

Be sure to test your structured data using the Structured Data Testing tool during development, and the Search Console Structured Data report after deployment, to monitor the health of your pages, which might break after deployment due to templating or serving issues.

You must include all the required properties for an object to be eligible for appearance in Google Search with enhanced display. In general, defining more recommended features can make it more likely that your information can appear in Search results with enhanced display. However, it is more important to supply fewer but complete and accurate recommended properties rather than trying to provide every possible recommended property with less complete, badly-formed, or inaccurate data.

In addition to the properties and objects documented here, Google can make general use of the sameAs property and other schema.org structured data. Some of these elements may be used to enable future Search features, if they are deemed useful.

Google Search supports structured data in the following formats, unless documented otherwise:

101 Online Business Directories for Local Marketing (List + Tips)

For small businesses, local search is likely to drive most of the traffic to your business s website or physical location. This is why it s so important to get listed in online business directories that have a quality rank. Adding your business to directories that rank well should give you an extra boost in the SERPs and create quality backlinks to your site it s the quality, not the quantity.

A Few Tips to Keep in Mind

1. Be Complete and Accurate
Even if your business is already listed, claim your listing and double check your address, phone numbers, website, social profiles, email and description. Fill in all fields and check for accuracy.

2. Be Consistent
An address can be written many different ways. For example, Street and St. OR Suite 123 and #123 . It’s important that your business s information is always listed consistently across the web. When listing your business, make sure to always use the same format on every directory, every time.

2. Choose Accurate Categories
You want to include categories that best describe the products or services you offer. Start with broad categories first and then move to specific categories.

4. Include Photos and Videos

Free Advertising & Cheap Advertising

A range of free advertising options for small business.

Cheap Business Advertising Tips

Top 10 ways of obtaining cheap advertising or free advertising – in no particular order.

  1. Local Magazines
We all get them, the free monthly pamphlets through the door from the local parish council, local publisher or local entrepeneur who tries to sell advertising space in their new local directory. Think about it though, how often do you use it if you want to find a local service? personally, it’s about the first place I look and more often than not the advertising rates are dirt cheap.
  • Stylish Business Cards
I was once told the most expensive business card you can get is a free one! Why risk the chance of losing that big order because your business cards are poor quality and don’t reflect the service you provide?.
    Suppliers of Business Cards .
  • Branded Merchandise
Everyone likes a freebie, you know your pens are going to go walkabout anyway, so why not get your name and logo on them so that at least you get a bit of benefit from the fact they are out there? The same goes for other nicnacks, make your client a coffee, leave him to his thoughts but have your USP on the mug he’s drinking from, you never know, it might just stick in his mind when he makes the decision you’re waiting for..
    Suppliers of Promotional Merchandise .
  • Local Noticeboards
Have you seen your local noticeboard recently? chances are a lot of people have and for the sake of 4 drawing pins, sore thumbs for an hour, you can get your message to these people.
  • Leaflet Distribution
On a par with local magazines except this time you have total control of the content. You also have the benefit of gaining a bit of fresh air, exercise and getting your face (and business) known in your locality. Go on, give it a go, get some nice flyers printed, get your tracksuit on and have a nice brisk walk around your local estate.
Leaflet Distribution Companies – Leaflet Delivery Companies
  • Online Business Directories
A lot of small business owners moan about online business directories taking up the top positions of the search engines. Rather than joining in with this moaning, the smart small business owner takes advantage of these directories to gain the positions they would have to pay a good optimiser to achieve for them.
Register in UK Small Business Directory .
  • Sponsor Local Events
Got a local team who needs assistance, a kiddies playground which needs a bit of new equipment, an annual event that needs a good raffle prize. Make yourself popular, feel good about yourself and gain a bit of cheap advertising all at the same time.
  • Article Writing
You don’t have to be a great writer, you don’t need to spend a lot of time, you don’t even have to see it as work. The articles on this page are a perfect example, the kids have gone to bed, there’s nothing on the telly, don’t feel like the pub tonight so let’s just patter away on the keyboard as though your’e waffling to a mate. The more you write, the easier it becomes, and soon you have a page full of content. And as we all know, a website needs content.
  • Viral Marketing – Using News
Listening to the radio the other day I heard someone talking about the fact they were going to buy their kids some hens for christmas, it was just the inspiration I needed to create my A Hen is for Christmas website. One week later it had received close to 3000 visitors.
  • Search Engine Optimisation
Avoid the rogues and snake oil salesmen which have come out of the woodwork in recent years, get yourself a good local SEO enthusiast and work with him, as long as you have a good relationship, are fair and don’t treat him as an employee, you can get great benefits. There are loads of geeks and young kids out there who still see search engine optimisation as a game, let them play and build up your sites popularity at the same time.

Zee Business: Go local, get an audience

Shuchi Bansal | New Delhi May 05, 2009 12:42 AM IST

Zee Business, the business news channel of the Zee Group, has increased its market share almost 100 per cent in the last one year. Launched in November 2004, it was the country s first Hindi business channel. However, it failed to make a mark. Up until one year ago, the channel lacked direction and a clear positioning. With a market share of approximately 11 per cent, it trailed CNBC, CNBC Awaaz and NDTV Profit by a huge margin.

Last summer, the channel s new business head, Raktim Das, went back to the drawing board to see how he could drive channel viewership. The problems were aplenty. We did not even know who we were talking to. However, what we knew was that business leaders like Ratan Tata or Nandan Nilkeni were not talking to us, says Das.

Step one included defining the core audience and the core positioning of the channel. Since purchasing power was growing in Tier II and III towns, it was decided to focus on small and medium enterprises of up to Rs 100 crore, especially those in the Hindi-speaking markets.

So, the spotlight turned on towns like Moradabad (for its crystal and brass exports), Agra (leather), Ludhiana (wool products and hosiery) and Jaipur (gems and jewellery). To connect with the audience in these towns, Zee Business began organising investor camps.

Zee held 30 such camps where an expert panel talked to people about their financial planning and investment needs. Simultaneously, it launched a hunt for smart investors in these towns who were meant to resolve case studies in financial planning. Selected viewers were shot with their families for an on-air show.

The exercise has been on for the last nine months and has created a huge rapport with the viewers. The grand finale of the contest is yet to be held, says Das. In another ground event, the channel organised discussions on emerging businesses in 10 cities. Result? Its viewership has risen from 11 per cent in March 2008 to 19 per cent in November to 25 per cent between January and March. Das claims Zee Business is now ahead of NDTV Profit and UTVi.

JOIN LOCAL BUSINESSES THAT SUPPORT MARRIAGE EQUALITY

We are asking all local businesses to add their voice to the growing call for equal rights for all Australians. If your business would like to join in then please use this page to upload:

    • a scanned copy of your letter of support on your organisation’s letterhead
    • your organisation’s logo
    • the web address to which we should backlink your logo

Feel free to use the open letter of support below or submit your own original letter of support.

Once your logo has been loaded onto our website you may wish to place this logo on your own website to show your support. Please backlink to our main web page: australianmarriageequali ty.org

You may also wish to print this poster and place it in your front window. Included in that download is a meme to use on social media.

    THE LETTER

Feel free to use this letter of support below, submit your own original letter or even a mixture of the two.

AN OPEN LETTER FROM AUSTRALIAN LOCAL BUSINESS OWNERS IN SUPPORT OF MARRIAGE EQUALITY

We, local business owners from across Australia, write to express our support for marriage equality.

We recognise that diversity makes workplaces stronger and more successful. We support the right of our lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer (LGBTIQ) employees to work and live in environments free of prejudice and discrimination, enjoying the essential freedoms experienced by other employees and the broader community.

We believe that individual rights and liberties are critically important. They are essential in the creation of a healthy, harmonious and open society. An equitable society, free of discrimination, allows all employees to function at their best. This has obvious benefits for small businesses. Australia, a nation with a robust democratic tradition, would also benefit greatly from allowing all its citizens to be treated equally.

The Australian people are increasingly supportive of marriage equality, with a recent study showing 72 per cent believe same-sex couples should be allowed to marry. We agree. Globally, over 20 countries have passed laws to allow same-sex marriage, including the United States of America, Ireland, New Zealand, Canada and Great Britain which did so with lower support for marriage equality than Australia is seeing right now. Times have changed.

Not only is marriage equality the only truly fair option, but it is also a sound economic option, given that a happy workforce is a productive one. To remain competitive, and to attract top talent from around the world, organisations – and nations – must create a fair and respectful environment for all.

Equality in the workplace works; Discrimination does not.

We support the right for all our employees to have equal opportunities in life. We therefore support marriage equality.

This will allow your listing to stand out among the others in your categories. Plus, videos can provide more information to compliment your listing.

    5. Get Reviews
This is another way to help your listing stand out and let visitors see what your customers have to say so hopefully you have good reviews. If not, encourage customers to write reviews.
