How to Start a Blog and Make Money From It

If you want to work from home and make money blogging, then you need to have the right tools, resources, and information to guide your way.

With an overwhelming amount of information on the web it’s often confusing figuring it all out. Listed below are some of the resources that I use, recommend, or that I’ve found helpful on my blogging journey.

These tools will not only help get you started but they’ll make the process easier so you can start making money faster.

To start the process you ll need to choose a blogging platform; or in technical terms a content management system (CMS). There are many different CMS platforms to choose between, but I highly recommend WordPress. It s ideal for beginners as it s easy to use and modify, it has tons of functionality, and it s free to use all you need to do is purchase your hosting and domain name.

WordPress is what I use for this site.

A lot of people ask me about Blogger, Google’s blogging platform. I’ve heard it’s easy to use. But I also know a lot of people who started out on Blogger, but then had to make the switch to WordPress later on. Do yourself a favor and use WordPress from the beginning, you ll save yourself a lot of headaches down the road.

Once you decided on a blogging platform you ll need to purchase a domain name and hosting. When choosing a hosting company you’ll want to make sure that you get one that’s reliable, affordable, and that has excellent customer service. Right now I m using a virtual private server (VPS) through, Liquid Web. They have a wide variety of hosting plans, which makes it easy to upgrade your service as your site grows. If I weren t using them, I would probably use Bluehost or Synthesis. as they were created with WordPress users in mind. Over the years, I ve had to switch hosting companies three times which is no fun.

When I first launched my blog, I had a graphic designer create a custom design for me. And while I loved my design it was very expensive! If I were just starting out again, I would use Bluehost with their 1-2-3 easy upload and a template from StudioPress (which is what I m using now). Not only are these templates affordable (like $99), but they look great and they re super easy to modify. To help make your site stand out, I do suggest getting a custom logo designed. If you re launching your blog on a shoestring budget, try Fiverr where freelancers only charge $5 for their services. I haven t used Fiverr for logo design, but I have used them for other sorts of images, and I ve been happy with the results.

To get traffic to your blog you’ll want to utilize social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Foursquare, Instagram, and Google Plus. Seem overwhelming? To help manage all of these social media platforms, I use HootSuite. I’ve tried other applications, but this one has the most functionality, and it is the easiest to use. You can schedule updates and manage all of your accounts in one place, and best of all it s FREE!

The one network that you can’t manage from HootSuite is Pinterest. For Pinterest, I use BoardBooster to manage my pins. It s only $5 a month and so worth it! You can schedule pins and re-loop your pins so that they receive maximum exposure.

To create pin-friendly images for your blog posts, I recommend PicMonkey or Canva. I started out using PicMonkey, which is easy to use, and it gives you professional looking images in a flash. But now I mostly use Canva. It has premade templates and font combos which help me create professional looking images quicker. Each platform is free for basic usage with permeium features costing just a bit more.

For stock images I use StockFresh and DepositPhotos not only do they have high-quality photos, but they re affordable.

Part of getting traffic is writing awesome content. To make sure your content is excellent you ll need to edit your posts for punctuation, grammar, and spelling. Now you can do this manually, but I ve found that even when I go back and proofread two or three times I often miss typos. Of course, you can hire an editor to proof your content, but that can get expensive. A more affordable option is to use an editing software or program. I ve tried a few different platforms out and by far my favorite is, Grammarly. It s easy to use and catches errors that word processing programs miss. It also tightens up your copy so you re using an active voice.

From the first day, you launch your blog you need to make sure that you’re building an email list. SEO rules and social media platforms are constantly changing. But with an email list, it is something that you own, and that can always be used to reach your audience. Personally, I use Constant Contact I love them! They have lots of professional looking templates to choose from, it’s super easy to use, and they have added features like auto-responders. They even offer a FREE 60 trial so you can test them out without any obligation.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO):

The majority of my traffic comes from Google, and this is because certain keyword phrases on my site have ranked well with the search engines. Search engine traffic is free, and you’ll want to take advantage of it. I used to recommend Holly Klaassen’s e-book, 50 SEO Secrets for Mom Entrepreneurs, but she s no longer selling it.

Can You Really Make Money With Vending Machines?

The ads are alluring: “Make $500 an Hour in the Vending Business!” “Earn Money While You Sleep in a Vending Machine Business!” But they sound way too good to be true. Can vending machines really be a viable way to earn cash?

The National Automatic Merchandising Association reports that 18 percent of vending-machine operators make between $1 million and $5 million a year. But proceed with caution: The Better Business Bureau warns of scams. and a search of “vending machines” on the Federal Trade Commission’s website unearths dozens of fines and lawsuits.

Here are a half dozen tips for getting into the vending-machine business safely and profitably.

  1. Decide on the vending machine type. Many vending machines are filled with a selection of drinks and snack foods. Others focus more narrowly on a particular category, such as ice cream, popcorn, cigarettes, videos (think Redbox ), or personal hygiene. Some machines dispense individual units; others offer items in bulk, such as hard candy and gumballs.
  2. Get the proper licenses. In some states you’ll need a seller’s permit to operate vending machines, and many states require you to charge sales tax on the items in the machines. The tax varies by state, as does the minimum price that launches the requirement to collect the tax. Be sure to check with your local licensing office to find about the requirements in your area.
  3. Buy the machines. Decide whether you want to buy new or used machines. Prices can vary wildly: A new machine often runs a few thousand dollars, while used ones go for a few hundred or less on Craigslist. eBay. or Amazon. Keep in mind that all machines eventually break down, so you’ll need to either hire someone to repair them or learn to do so yourself. (Tip: You can buy parts from a manufacturer such as Vendors Exchange International .)
  4. Buy or lease a truck. Depending on how large your operation is, you’ll need a van — or, perhaps, a specialized beverage truck — to carry products from machine to machine. A used truck starts at about $5,500 at places like Specialty Trux. or you can lease a basic truck for about $500 a month.
  5. Find a supplier. You can buy products in bulk at a local big-box store or go online. Check out sites like Candymachines.com for bulk candy, or SmartVending for a full line of supplies. Markups will vary, depending on the product. Bulk items, such as candy and gumballs can be marked up 200 to 300 percent, while single items can typically be marked up between 60 and 100 percent. Of course, the more products you buy, the better price you’ll get, so you may have to settle for lower markups when just starting out in order to be competitive, and then increase them as you add machines.
  6. Secure a location or two. Where you place your vending machines will determine how successful you are. Check out each site before you approach its owner. Look for a place that gets a lot of foot traffic, such as an airport, a parking lot, a shopping mall, a large office building, or a busy waiting room. Once you select a location, approach the owner and work out a deal. Some vending machine operators offer the owner a small percentage of their profits; others donate a portion of sales to charity. NAMA, in its publication Vending 101 [PDF], suggests that you sign a written contract whenever you place a machine.
  7. Service your machines. Once your machines are placed, it will be up to you to keep them clean, well-stocked, and in working order. You may be able to do this by visiting once a week, but if the machine is popular, you may need to turn up more often.

Of course, all of this isn’t quite as easy as earning money while you sleep. But with careful planning, hard work, and a little luck, you can run a successful vending-machine business.

How much can an ATM make?

Well, It’s all about foot traffic, a reason to need money, and other available payment methods. Sometimes just having a lot of people walk by or see the ATM can mean the difference between a good

The ATM Industry has a “rule of thumb” formula that many Independent ATM Deployers “IADs” use as a general rule to determine if a location would be a good candidate for an ATM machine. There are two different schools of thought on this rule, and obviously since there are many unknown variables, no location is a guarantee using these formulas but it’s better than a WAG (wild ass guess).

    • The first rule of thumb, or formula says that 3 – 5% of people that actually see an ATM machine in an establishment will likely use the ATM. Say for example, your location has an average of 200 customers visiting each day. One would expect, or speculate that approximately 8 of those 200 people would use that ATM daily.
        • You could then take those 8 people, multiply it by the amount of surcharge, then take that figure and multiply it by the number of days of business (how many day’s the location is open) in the year. This will give an ATM owner, or perspective owner, an estimate on how much revenue could be generated from the machine in a year’s time.
        • However, most ATM business owners want to calculate monthly revenue and income.
    • The 2nd rule of thumb follows the norm that the number of adult patrons an establishment has in a given day, that same number plus or minus 10% will use the ATM on a monthly basis. I prefer this rule of thumb and if the establishment accepts credit cards or gives cash back at the point of sale (POS), the lower end of the rule would apply and it might even reduce the number by as much as 20% – 40%.
    • A similar formula is used for hotels or big commercial buildings. With hotels, we take the number of rooms, times the occupancy rate and apply the same plus or minus 10% rule. So if the hotel has 150 rooms with an 80% occupancy rate one might expect 110 – 135 monthly transactions, however if the hotel has any events or banquet rooms, that number would scale higher during those times.
        • Similarly with commercial buildings (office building for example) you might take the total number of employees working in the building and using the yearly formula based on how many days a year the companies occupying the building are open. If there is a cafe or for profit cafeteria in the building the estimates would be higher.

Think about it this way. Some of the best locations are where there is a high need for cash and no credit cards are accepted. Swap meets, events, and street fairs, are all great but very temporary. That would be a mobile ATM business which we can also show you how to operate.

We’ll try to boil this down and make it simple. At the very least, if you’re a retail merchant, and you don’t already own an ATM, you could purchase the hardware from anyone (even from us) and once you set up the ATM processing it should at least pay for itself in as little as a few months.

You’ll also need a communication method so the ATM can talk to our processing center. You can choose from a dedicated standard phone line (but since it calls a toll free or local number you’ll just have the cost of the line, no tolls), Internet Service (if you have a high speed model or DLS with a router, you can hard-wire the ATM to your current internet), or you can choose our wireless cellular service which is often less expensive than a phone line and lightening fast.

With the advent of VoIP and certain devices if you have a computer close to the ATM you could potentially use a Magic Jack or other device as long as the ATM can hear a dial tone or pre-dial to get a tone (like dialing a 9, although not as reliable, it would still work). However, intermittent communications can cause more problems that they save you. If there is an issue with communications, transactions could be slow or worse they could be interrupted and customers would not receive money from the ATM getting upset.

If you have a fast internet connection and you purchase one of the new ATMs which includes internet processing, or get a separate wireless device ATMDepot can handle the rest for you. In order of ranking communications as far as ease, cost, and reliability.

    • Wireless Device is preferred and is the most reliable.
    • Next would be your own Internet service with a hard wire to the ATM Machine.
    • Lastly, a standard Dial up Phone line, but this method causes the most communication issues.

If you don’t have an ATM or are considering getting into the ATM business to earn some extra cash or a passive income, you just need to be sure that a minimum of at least 3 – 4 people per day would use the ATM every day (if available 7 days per week).

Obviously if you’re a retailer and are open 10 hours a day that’s just one person using the ATM every few hours. If you’re considering a through the wall machine that faces outside it will be available 24 hours a day but those machines need at least 8 – 10 people per day to make financial sense.

If you already have an ATM or are already in the ATM business and are looking to switch your ATM processing services (you need to check your current ATM agreement for termination clause) you could take advantage of our higher revenue sharing without any costs to you and put more money in your pocket.

How to Start a Blog and Make Money From It

If you want to work from home and make money blogging, then you need to have the right tools, resources, and information to guide your way.

With an overwhelming amount of information on the web it’s often confusing figuring it all out. Listed below are some of the resources that I use, recommend, or that I’ve found helpful on my blogging journey.

These tools will not only help get you started but they’ll make the process easier so you can start making money faster.

To start the process you ll need to choose a blogging platform; or in technical terms a content management system (CMS). There are many different CMS platforms to choose between, but I highly recommend WordPress. It s ideal for beginners as it s easy to use and modify, it has tons of functionality, and it s free to use all you need to do is purchase your hosting and domain name.

WordPress is what I use for this site.

A lot of people ask me about Blogger, Google’s blogging platform. I’ve heard it’s easy to use. But I also know a lot of people who started out on Blogger, but then had to make the switch to WordPress later on. Do yourself a favor and use WordPress from the beginning, you ll save yourself a lot of headaches down the road.

Once you decided on a blogging platform you ll need to purchase a domain name and hosting. When choosing a hosting company you’ll want to make sure that you get one that’s reliable, affordable, and that has excellent customer service. Right now I m using a virtual private server (VPS) through, Liquid Web. They have a wide variety of hosting plans, which makes it easy to upgrade your service as your site grows. If I weren t using them, I would probably use Bluehost or Synthesis. as they were created with WordPress users in mind. Over the years, I ve had to switch hosting companies three times which is no fun.

When I first launched my blog, I had a graphic designer create a custom design for me. And while I loved my design it was very expensive! If I were just starting out again, I would use Bluehost with their 1-2-3 easy upload and a template from StudioPress (which is what I m using now). Not only are these templates affordable (like $99), but they look great and they re super easy to modify. To help make your site stand out, I do suggest getting a custom logo designed. If you re launching your blog on a shoestring budget, try Fiverr where freelancers only charge $5 for their services. I haven t used Fiverr for logo design, but I have used them for other sorts of images, and I ve been happy with the results.

To get traffic to your blog you’ll want to utilize social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Foursquare, Instagram, and Google Plus. Seem overwhelming? To help manage all of these social media platforms, I use HootSuite. I’ve tried other applications, but this one has the most functionality, and it is the easiest to use. You can schedule updates and manage all of your accounts in one place, and best of all it s FREE!

The one network that you can’t manage from HootSuite is Pinterest. For Pinterest, I use BoardBooster to manage my pins. It s only $5 a month and so worth it! You can schedule pins and re-loop your pins so that they receive maximum exposure.

To create pin-friendly images for your blog posts, I recommend PicMonkey or Canva. I started out using PicMonkey, which is easy to use, and it gives you professional looking images in a flash. But now I mostly use Canva. It has premade templates and font combos which help me create professional looking images quicker. Each platform is free for basic usage with permeium features costing just a bit more.

For stock images I use StockFresh and DepositPhotos not only do they have high-quality photos, but they re affordable.

Part of getting traffic is writing awesome content. To make sure your content is excellent you ll need to edit your posts for punctuation, grammar, and spelling. Now you can do this manually, but I ve found that even when I go back and proofread two or three times I often miss typos. Of course, you can hire an editor to proof your content, but that can get expensive. A more affordable option is to use an editing software or program. I ve tried a few different platforms out and by far my favorite is, Grammarly. It s easy to use and catches errors that word processing programs miss. It also tightens up your copy so you re using an active voice.

From the first day, you launch your blog you need to make sure that you’re building an email list. SEO rules and social media platforms are constantly changing. But with an email list, it is something that you own, and that can always be used to reach your audience. Personally, I use Constant Contact I love them! They have lots of professional looking templates to choose from, it’s super easy to use, and they have added features like auto-responders. They even offer a FREE 60 trial so you can test them out without any obligation.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO):

The majority of my traffic comes from Google, and this is because certain keyword phrases on my site have ranked well with the search engines. Search engine traffic is free, and you’ll want to take advantage of it. I used to recommend Holly Klaassen’s e-book, 50 SEO Secrets for Mom Entrepreneurs, but she s no longer selling it.

If you own a brick-and-mortar store, you need a sign out front. It s how customers find you. It s also the first impression you give the general public about your company. Needless to say, making your sign memorable is important. Most businesses make the mistake of designing a sign that s understated or too elegant, they try to blend into their environment, include too much information on the sign, they cheap out on the materials, or they place the sign too high off the ground. The idea is to get people to remember you, not to make it hard to figure out what you do (or that you exist).

Quality is important. It s probably the most important factor in your sign. A cheap sign can be spotted a mile away. If you know you don t have a good sense for quality, ask a friend or business partner for help. In general, you should buy the most expensive sign your company can afford. Buy good materials that stand up to UV light, harsh winds, torrential downpours, ice and snow, and any other extreme weather common to your area.

If you want to make your brand memorable, you have to be a little outrageous audacious even. No one remembers a sign that blends into the background. People remember signs that stick out like a sore thumb. For example, if your business is in a wooded area, consider using colors that contrast, even outright clash, with the scenery. It s not supposed to fit in. On the contrary, it s supposed to get noticed.

Think about businesses that have over the top signage Hard Rock Cafe. The company has a guitar as its logo. In some areas of the country, their signs are 3D, actually coming out of the building. No one forgets these signs after they see them.

Another example is the Hollywood sign in California. It s not a business sign, but it s very memorable. Why? Because it s dramatic, it s grossly oversized, there s nothing near it to distract you, it s in a strange place, and there s something oddly wrong about it the letters are all sitting at different heights instead of each one being perfectly level with the next one.

Don t make your signs overly complicated. A complex sign isn t always a better sign. You should be able to communicate your message simply, clearly, and unequivocally. Think about the signage that Apple uses. It s logo is simple an apple. To be more exact, it s a blue apple with the words Apple Campus One Infinite Loop. That s it. Everyone recognizes the logo and the sign when they see it and they never forget the brand.

You want your customers to want to do business with you. In general, regardless of the color scheme you use, your customers should be enticed to do business with you (or, at least, be enticed to walk in the door). The most attractive companies from the street are the ones with the cleanest signs. In other words, there s not a lot of clutter on the sign.

A simple sign doesn t try to jam in every possible offering of the company, the phone number, the fax, the company name, logo, tag line, etc. It simply tries to convey the business name and possibly a tag line if it s not clear what the company does from its name.

Once you’ve created great business cards. it’s time to make brochures to show off your company. Brochures let you showcase your business–your products or services and your purpose. They hold more information than do business cards, so you can include additional contact information. Instead of including only your usual social media handles for Twitter and Facebook, for instance, consider adding a link to your Yelp page.

The industry standard for brochure design is either QuarkXPress 9 or Adobe InDesign–both of which cost hundreds of dollars. Luckily, you don’t need these programs to design professional-looking brochures .

Microsoft Word, while not ideal for desktop publishing, will work if you’ve got the right template. Don’t rely on Word’s preloaded templates–Microsoft’s Office website has over 80 free brochure and booklet templates for both Word and Publisher. You can find additional free Word brochure templates on HP’s website for small and medium-size businesses.

Mac users can design attractive brochures in Apple’s iWork Pages. Pages features basic templates, but additional free iWork templates can be found on the iWork Templates Blog and on iWork Community .

Looking for a desktop publishing program? Try PagePlus Starter Edition. which is free and features master pages, column flow, and the ability to move and lock text boxes and images. The full version of PagePlus has more options and costs $100.

Brother’s CreativeCenter website lets you design a trifold brochure for free. If you’d rather stay online, MyCreativeShop is an online brochure-maker with hundreds of customizable brochure designs. The site has two-panel and three-panel brochure designs, as well as 4-, 8-, and 12-page booklet templates. Each design template costs $69, but you can try out a design for free before you purchase it.

HP’s Marketsplash also offers brochure designs–over 250. in fact–that you can customize using HP’s online tool. Epson’s CreativeZone has a number of free downloadable trifold brochure templates, as does Brother’s CreativeCenter .

If you decide to print brochures yourself, it’s best to have a printer that supports two-sided (duplex) printing, such as the HP Officejet 6000 Wireless. The decision to print on your own will mostly depend on how many brochures you want to print. If you’re printing over a hundred brochures, you may want to consider outsourcing because many print shops will include folding or assembly.

To find out if your printer supports duplex printing, go to the the Printer Properties menu and look for an option that says something like “Two-sided (Duplex) Printing” or “Print on both sides.” If you can’t find such an option in the menu, your printer doesn’t support duplexing, or you may need to download additional drivers. Because brochures are always two-sided, automatic duplex printing will save you the hassle of having to flip over each sheet manually.

Automatic duplexing works best with 16-pound to 28-pound paper, but can work with paper that has a basis weight of up to 32 pounds .

A printer that handles double-sided printing, like the HP Officejet 6000, is the best bet for brochure-making. You can outsource brochure printing to an online print shop such as Vistaprint. Vistaprint starts at $290 for 500 brochures, and that price includes full color on both sides. Additional features will cost you just a little extra: $4 if you want to upload a photo or design, $1.50 for a map, and $1.50 if you want a PDF version as well (prices are subject to change, of course).

Some of the more well-known printing companies are considerably more expensive: FedEx Kinko’s starts at $1.03 per brochure (based on an order of 1500), though that price includes double-sided printing in full color, as well as folding.

    Step 1 Decide on a blogging platform

    There are lots of different platforms which you can build your blog on. But the most popular by far is WordPress. I have used WordPress for years and it does everything you could possibly want. Some of the leading websites in the world are built on WordPress including this blog!

    The last I heard, WordPress has been downloaded over 72 Million times, so that in itself should be enough to tell you that it is the best platform to use.

    The advantages of WordPress are:

    • There are thousands of free themes and layouts to choose from
    • WordPress uses plugins, there is a plugin for almost everything, so no need for coding
    • Easily add images and multimedia
    • Simple to install (takes 2 minutes)

    With WordPress you can create what is called a self hosted blog , and this is what we are going to be doing. This means that we can use our own hosting and most importantly, our own domain name. If you use the free blogging platform on blogger.com or Tumbler.com you will be given a subdomain, which will look something like this (startablog.tumblr.com). This also restricts you to many of the features of hosting your own blog.

    It also gives your blog more credit if it is self hosted on your own domain, and you have full ownership of it. For this reason I ALWAYS self host my blogs.

    Step 2 Choosing A Domain Name And Host

    You want to put a bit of thought into selecting your domain name. You can choose to use your business name, your own name or a domain that contains keywords related to the type of site you are building. My advice is to choose something that is brand-able and easy to remember, keep it short if possible.

    10 tips to secure your small business network

    Maintaining a secure small business or home network isn’t easy, and even for an old hand in IT, it still takes time and energy to keep things locked down. Here are 10 of the most critical steps you can take to keep your data from ending up elsewhere, and none of them take much time or effort to accomplish.

    1. Use encryption on your wireless access points (AP). Many site surveys have found half or more of all wireless networks are wide open, ripe for anyone to gather all the traffic and perhaps record your sensitive information by sitting in a nearby parked car. Some people mess around with locking down MAC addresses, but that gets unwieldy and a better solution would be to use WPA2 encryption. WPA2 is far better than other encryption methods that are more easily broken into.

    2. If you have a wireless network, make sure to hide your SSID (service set identifier), or at least change its name to something common. All wireless routers should have obscure IDs when they announce themselves to the world. Rather than put in any real information that can make it clear who owns the router or that can divulge your location or business name, such as “Acme Systems, here on the 4th floor” or the product name like “Netgear,” use something innocuous like “wireless” or “router1” that doesn’t give away anything really critical. In my last apartment, I had neighbors who used their apartment numbers for their IDs, making it real easy to figure out who’s router was where.

    3. If your router (wired or wireless) has a Web management interface, disable access from the outside network. And change the admin default password now. Most routers have the ability to do both quite easily. You don’t want anyone else coming in and changing your settings or reading your log files.

    4. Make sure all of your PCs use antivirus software and if you’re using Windows, add antispyware protection. This seems obvious, but it bears restatiing. And while you are at it, check to make sure that all of your antivirus subscriptions are current. Anything out of date isn’t doing you any good. In my support travels, I’ve found that this is a very common lapse among my neighbors.

    5. If you are running a Web server on your LAN, put it on a DMZ. If your router doesn’t have a DMZ, get a new router. Better yet, move to a collocation facility where someone who knows what he is doing can manage it. Having your own local Web server sounds like a good idea, but is a real security sinkhole, and many cable networks have made it harder to host your own from your home network anyway. So why worry?

    6. Speaking of Web servers on the Internet, if you have them, you should scan regularly for exploits. There are many sites that can do this, two of my favorites are SPIdynamics.com and Qualys.com. Also, make sure to keep track of your domain registry and change all of your access passwords regularly. If you update your Web content, don’t use FTP or Microsoft’s Web page creation tool, FrontPage; instead, find more-secure methods that don’t send your access passwords in the clear.     7. If your ISP offers such an option, use a VPN (virtual private network) for access back to your local LAN or your remote Web server. There are many to choose from, ranging from the free OpenVPN.net to inexpensive but capable ones from SonicWall and Fortinet. which are designed for small business owners.

    8. Disable file/print sharing on everything other than your file server. You don’t need it on each desktop, and that just causes more vulnerabilities. This is particularly important for laptop users: You don’t want to be broadcasting your entire file system to everyone around you at the airport or hotel, which is something that I often see when I travel and check for open network shares.

    9. Use whole disk encryption on all laptops that will ever leave home. You never know when someone will steal your data or break into your car or hotel room and lift the laptop. I like PGP Disk. but there are others that cost next to nothing and provide plenty of protection. If you are in the habit of carrying around USB thumb drives with your data, then use one of the more modern U3 drives that work with Windows and are at least password-protected to keep your data away from others.

    10. Start doing regular off-site backups now. At least start with making copies of your key customer and business data, and then make sure you cover your personal files, such as family photos and the like. Now is the time to cook up something simple. Burn DVDs and take them home, or make use of one of the online storage vendors such as eVault and Amazon.com’s S3. They cost less than $100 a year (Amazon’s less than $10 a year) and can save your data in case of fire, theft or just carelessness. If you have two PCs in two different locations, sign up for Microsoft’s Foldershare.com free service to synchronize your data.

    Now, there are plenty of other security options that will buy you peace of mind and make it harder for hackers, but these 10 items are easy to implement, don’t cost much in terms of your time and money, and will have big security payoffs.     How to Insert a Graphic or Animation Into an Outlook Signature

    A typical Microsoft Outlook email signature is just text. It might be formatted or colored but it s usually pretty bland until you add an image. Maybe it s a company logo or a family photo, and either is really easy to include.

    Your email signature can send a strong professional or promotional message. This is true for text, but images can often convey meaning even faster and in a richer manner. Of course, pictures can be added just for fun, too.

    In Outlook. adding a graphic or animation (an animated GIF. for example) to your signature is as easy as adding a picture to an email.

    How to Add Images to an Outlook Signature

    Outlook 2016 or 2010

    Below are the instructions for adding a graphic to your Outlook 2016 or 2010 email signature. If you have an older version of the program, see the tutorials below this first set of steps.

    1. Choose File from the menu in MS Outlook.
    2. Select Options to open Outlook Options .
    3. Go into the Mail tab.
    4. In the Compose messages section, choose the Signatures. button next to Create or modify signatures for messages .
    5. If you already have a signature that you want to add an image to, skip down to Step 6. Otherwise, click the New button in the E-mail Signature tab to make a new Outlook signature.

    Name the signature something unique and then enter any text you want included in the signature in the area at the bottom of the Signatures and Stationery window, in the Edit signature section.

    1. Make sure the signature you want to add a picture to is selected.
    2. Position the cursor where you want to insert the picture.
    3. Click the insert pictures button in the formatting toolbar to select the image you want in the signature. It s the one between the Business Card and hyperlink buttons.

      Important: Make sure the image is small (less than some 200 KB would be best) to avoid having it take up too much space in the email. Adding attachments already increases the message size, so it s recommended to keep the image signature small.

    1. Click OK on the Signatures and Stationery window to save the signature.
    2. Click OK again to exit out of Outlook Options.

    If you want to edit an existing signature, see the steps below Step 17.

    1. Create a new message in Outlook using rich HTML formatting.
    2. Design your desired signature in the body of the message.
    3. Position the cursor where you want to insert a picture.
    4. Use Insert Picture. to add the image or animation.

    Make sure the image is a GIF, JPEG or PNG file and not too big. Other formats such as TIFF or BMP produce large files. Try reducing the image size or resolution in a graphics editor and saving the picture to the JPEG format if it s any larger than around 200 KB.

  • Press Ctrl A to highlight the entire body of the message.
  • Press Ctrl C .
  • Now select Tools Options. from the main Outlook menu.
  • Access the Mail Format tab.
  • Click Signatures. under Signatures.
  • Click New. to add a new signature and give it a name.
  • Click Next .
  • Press Ctrl V to paste your signature in the Signature text field.
  • Click Finish .
  • Now click OK .
  • If you ve just created your first signature, Outlook has automatically made it the default for new messages, which means it will be automatically inserted. To use it for replies too, select it under Signature for replies and forwards: .
    1. Click OK again.

    Edit an Existing Signature to Add an Image in Outlook 2007

    To edit an existing signature using the method described above:

    1. Select Tools Options. from the menu.
    2. Go to the Mail Format tab.
    3. Click Signatures. under Signatures .
    4. Highlight the signature you want to edit and press Ctrl A to highlight all the text.
    5. Copy it with Ctrl C .
    6. Use the Esc key three times.
    7. Create a new message in Outlook using rich HTML formatting.
    8. Click in the body of the new message.
    9. Press Ctrl A and then Ctrl V to paste the content.
    10. Proceed as above but edit the existing one instead.

    Synovial Fluid Analysis

    Synovial fluid analysis is a group of tests that examine joint (synovial) fluid. The tests help diagnose and treat joint-related problems.

    How the test is performed

    A sample of synovial fluid is needed for this test. Synovial fluid is normally a thick, straw-colored liquid found in small amounts in joints, bursae, and tendon sheaths.

    After the area is cleaned, the health care provider will insert a sterile needle through the skin and into the joint space. Once in the joint, fluid is drawn through the needle into a sterile syringe.

    The fluid sample is sent to the laboratory. The laboratory technician will check the sample’s color and clarity, and then place it under a microscope to check it for red and white blood cells, crystals (in the case of gout), and bacteria. In addition, there may be a chemical analysis, and if infection is a concern, a sample will be cultured to see if any bacteria grow.

    How to prepare for the test

    Normally, no special preparation is necessary, but contact your health care provider before the test to make sure. Tell your doctor if you are taking blood thinners, as they can affect test results.

    How the test will feel

    Occasionally, the health care provider will first inject local anesthesia with a small needle, which will sting. The aspiration is done with a larger needle and may also cause some pain. The procedure usually lasts less than one minute.

    Why the test is performed

    The test can help diagnose the cause of pain or swelling in joints. Removing the fluid can also help relieve joint pain.

    This test may be used to diagnose:

    • Gout
    • Infection
    • Other inflammatory joint conditions
    • Joint injury
    • Osteoarthritis

    What abnormal results mean

    Abnormal joint fluid may look cloudy or abnormally thick.

    Blood in the joint fluid may be a sign of injury inside the joint or a body-wide bleeding problem. An excess amount of normal synovial fluid can also be a sign of osteoarthritis.

    What the risks are

    • Infection of the joint — unusual but more common with repeated aspirations
    • Bleeding into the joint space

    Special considerations

    Ice or cold packs may be applied to the joint for 24 to 36 hours after the test to reduce the swelling and joint pain. Depending on the exact problem, you can probably resume your normal activities after the procedure. Talk to your health care provider to determine what activity is most appropriate for you.

    Can You Really Make Money With Vending Machines?

    The ads are alluring: “Make $500 an Hour in the Vending Business!” “Earn Money While You Sleep in a Vending Machine Business!” But they sound way too good to be true. Can vending machines really be a viable way to earn cash?

    The National Automatic Merchandising Association reports that 18 percent of vending-machine operators make between $1 million and $5 million a year. But proceed with caution: The Better Business Bureau warns of scams. and a search of “vending machines” on the Federal Trade Commission’s website unearths dozens of fines and lawsuits.

    Here are a half dozen tips for getting into the vending-machine business safely and profitably.

    1. Decide on the vending machine type. Many vending machines are filled with a selection of drinks and snack foods. Others focus more narrowly on a particular category, such as ice cream, popcorn, cigarettes, videos (think Redbox ), or personal hygiene. Some machines dispense individual units; others offer items in bulk, such as hard candy and gumballs.
    2. Get the proper licenses. In some states you’ll need a seller’s permit to operate vending machines, and many states require you to charge sales tax on the items in the machines. The tax varies by state, as does the minimum price that launches the requirement to collect the tax. Be sure to check with your local licensing office to find about the requirements in your area.
    3. Buy the machines. Decide whether you want to buy new or used machines. Prices can vary wildly: A new machine often runs a few thousand dollars, while used ones go for a few hundred or less on Craigslist. eBay. or Amazon. Keep in mind that all machines eventually break down, so you’ll need to either hire someone to repair them or learn to do so yourself. (Tip: You can buy parts from a manufacturer such as Vendors Exchange International .)
    4. Buy or lease a truck. Depending on how large your operation is, you’ll need a van — or, perhaps, a specialized beverage truck — to carry products from machine to machine. A used truck starts at about $5,500 at places like Specialty Trux. or you can lease a basic truck for about $500 a month.
    5. Find a supplier. You can buy products in bulk at a local big-box store or go online. Check out sites like Candymachines.com for bulk candy, or SmartVending for a full line of supplies. Markups will vary, depending on the product. Bulk items, such as candy and gumballs can be marked up 200 to 300 percent, while single items can typically be marked up between 60 and 100 percent. Of course, the more products you buy, the better price you’ll get, so you may have to settle for lower markups when just starting out in order to be competitive, and then increase them as you add machines.
    6. Secure a location or two. Where you place your vending machines will determine how successful you are. Check out each site before you approach its owner. Look for a place that gets a lot of foot traffic, such as an airport, a parking lot, a shopping mall, a large office building, or a busy waiting room. Once you select a location, approach the owner and work out a deal. Some vending machine operators offer the owner a small percentage of their profits; others donate a portion of sales to charity. NAMA, in its publication Vending 101 [PDF], suggests that you sign a written contract whenever you place a machine.
    7. Service your machines. Once your machines are placed, it will be up to you to keep them clean, well-stocked, and in working order. You may be able to do this by visiting once a week, but if the machine is popular, you may need to turn up more often.

    Of course, all of this isn’t quite as easy as earning money while you sleep. But with careful planning, hard work, and a little luck, you can run a successful vending-machine business.

Most business analysts attain their first position after a few years in a related position such as data analyst, functional analyst, systems analyst, business requirements analyst, or financial analyst.

    The career path of a business analyst can include becoming a senior business analyst, a business analyst specialist in specific areas (such as SAP, Agile, or ScrumMaster), a business manager, a business architect, an enterprise architect, and finally a director or VP-level position. Other experienced business analysts become independent consultants, taking assignments on contract.

    It could be argued that plumbing kick-started the infrastructure and sanitation of civilization as we know it today. The field has come a long way from terra cotta pipes, but plumbers still fulfill a crucial profession. From unclogging a toilet to designing complex pipe plans for new construction projects, the tasks of plumbers of varying expertise keep our clean water flowing in and our wastewater flowing out. One of the highest ranking in the industry is the master plumber.

    Master Plumber Certification

    As in any job, the adage of paying your dues holds true in plumbing. Before you can move up in the ranks — and the pay scale — to master plumber, you must complete a plumbing apprenticeship program through a union or trade school. Requirements vary from state to state, but typically these are four-year programs that include classroom and on-the-job training. The next step is journeyman, and after holding that position for two years or so, depending on state requirements, you can become a master plumber — but not without passing a state-sanctioned exam. Mastering the trade and all of the laws that go along with it pays off.

    Average Wages

    The Bureau of Labor Statistics does not provide specific data on master plumbers, and instead groups data from plumbers, pipefitters and steamfitters. However, the BLS states that apprentices typically make 30 to 50 percent less than a journeyman or master, so this data can serve as a benchmark. In 2010, the DOL reported the average wage for this trio of trades was $22.43 per hour, or $46,660 per year. The top 10 percent earned about $79,000 per year, while the lower 10 percent brought home an annual salary of about $27,000. The average annual salary is higher than for construction trades as a whole, which has an annual average of about $38,000. Time magazine reported, via an interview with a spokesperson for a Cincinnati, Ohio-based plumbing chain, that master plumbers with five to seven years experience can earn upwards of $100,000 per year.

    Workplace Influence

    The type of plumbing work you do and whether or not you own your own business can affect your earnings as a master plumber. According to the Department of Labor, among the highest paid in the industry are union members. In addition, a master plumber can also work as a foreman, a superintendent or a project manager, each earning higher than the previous. The Department of Labor states that 14 percent of plumbers are self-employed, and owning a business can be quite lucrative — especially when providing emergency service around the clock. Finally, plumbers working in more risky conditions are likely to earn more. The top-paying industry for plumbers and pipefitters, according the BLS, is steel manufacturing, and the most jobs are available in building equipment contracting, nonresidential building construction and utility system construction.

    Geographic Influence

    Where you decide to hang your plumber s belt can also affect your salary. The metro areas with the top average annual salaries, reported in 2011 by the BLS, were Vineland-Millville-Bridgeton, N.J. at $84,030; Nassau-Suffolk, N.Y. at $75,990; and San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara, Calif. at $75,730. The top three paying states the same year were Alaska, Massachusetts and New York.

    How to Make a Facebook Page for Your Small Business

    If you own a small business, having a Facebook page lets you reach individuals among the 750 million or so users worldwide who are most likely to be interested in your company. Your interaction on the social network gives customers the sense that they know you and your business. which can increase loyalty and make them more likely to recommend your services.

    On Facebook you can easily add features that are harder to implement on your website. You can build a custom page, run contests and promotions, and manage a small e-commerce shop. Plus, Facebook is free. Even if you pay for custom applications or a developer’s services, it remains a form of advertising with a small price tag.

    The potential reach of a Facebook page is huge, as half of its users log in every day. Facebook studies show that people interact with their favorite brands on Facebook more than on any other social network, are more likely to recommend a brand after becoming a fan of it on Facebook, and are more likely to purchase a product after becoming a fan. In addition, anyone outside Facebook can view your Facebook page because search engines index it.

    Establishing Your Profile and Page Admins

    Before creating your Facebook fan page, you must establish a personal Facebook profile. The individual in that profile is the creator of the fan page. As a result, the subsequent Facebook business page doesn’t have a separate login from that of the individual user who created it.

    Many people are nervous about mixing their personal information with their business information, but the two are conceptually separate. You’ll interact with the business page as the business, and on your personal profile as yourself. Only administrators and the owner of the page can see other page admins. Thus, when I interact on my Facebook page, (Anti) Social Development. I post as that company and not as Kim Woodbridge. People who interact with my company page don’t see my personal profile.

    If you aren’t going to be the only person working on your business’s Facebook page, you’ll need to select admins. To do this, fill in the appropriate data in the ‘Edit Page’ section under ‘Manage Admins’. The admins either must be Facebook friends of yours, or must be identified by the email address they use for Facebook.

    The admins you designate won’t need your login to access the page, and once they log in as admins, they’ll have access to page-editing features. For example, I’m an admin on a number of business pages and can access all of them by logging into Facebook, so I don’t need anyone else’s login data.

    Be careful, however, to add only people you trust as admins. Any admin can remove any other admin, even the owner of the page–a structural flaw that Facebook needs to address. If you add a developer or other person to work on your page temporarily, I recommend removing that person from admin status as soon as the job is done.

    Facebook does offer what it calls a business account, but this option is very limited and I don’t recommend it. A business account doesn’t allow you to install Facebook apps, so you can’t add a custom page made with iframes or third-party tools, as discussed throughout this article. For that reason, I don’t recommend using a business account.

    Creating a Facebook Page

    From your Facebook profile page, click the Pages header in the left-side navigation. Next, click the Create a Page button, and select the type of page–Local Business or Place. for example, or Brand or Product. You’ll see a number of fields to fill out, such as your business category, name, and address.

    One of the early steps of creating a business page on Facebook is to choose your business type.

    Next, click the Get Started button, and Facebook will guide you through the rest of the setup process, step by step. If you skip any of those steps, you can fill them out later on a new page in the Facebook Welcome section, which only page admins will see.

    Information to Include

    When Facebook walks you through the initial steps, it will request information about your business–a logo for the page avatar, details for the About section, contact information and hours, and the URL of your website.

    If you want Facebook to pull in your blog posts automatically, an application such as Networked Blogs can help. Each time you publish a new post to your blog, Networked Blogs will import the post and add it to the Wall of your Facebook business page.

    Among the Facebook applications that come with your page by default are Photos, Links, Events, Notes, and Video. You can’t remove the default applications, but you can set them not to appear in the left-side page navigation.

    After completing the first steps, you’ll want to customize the public appearance of your Facebook page with a design appropriate for your business.

    Five Tips to Make PowerPoint Business Presentations More Effective

    Using PowerPoint in a Business Presentation?
    These five tips will make your communication more effective

    It is almost expected today that you will use PowerPoint in business presentations. It can be used to add visuals to the message and is an easy way to create a leave-behind handout or e-mail the presentation to others later. But too often business presenters aren’t as effective as they could be when delivering a PowerPoint presentation. Here are five tips drawn from my training programs for making your next PowerPoint business presentation more effective.

    Start with Structure First

    I always start my workshops by suggesting that presenters plan their presentation on paper before they sit down at the computer. Start by defining the goal of the presentation – what you want the audience to do, feel, understand or act on when you are done. Next, describe where the audience is today in terms of their knowledge, trust of you, attitudes and roles in the organization. Once you have the starting point and destination, you can now plan the route that you will use to take the audience through your presentation. This is just like a GPS does when determining the best route from your location to a destination (this article discusses the GPS approach to planning your presentation and includes a video of me explaining the idea). Using sticky notes to lay out the main ideas and supporting data is a good way to see the entire presentation at once. Now you can decide where visuals will add to your message and what those visuals should be.

    Use Colors Fonts that are Easy to See

    You don’t need to have a graphic design background in order to design slides that are visually appealing. Decide on a simple standard look for your slides so that the audience has visual consistency throughout the presentation. Select background and text colors that have enough contrast so that the text will be easy to read. Instead of guessing at whether the colors have enough contrast, check the colors with the Color Contrast Calculator. For any text, research tells us that a sans-serif font, like Arial or Calibri, is easier to read when projected, so use one of these fonts. For font size, it depends on the size of the screen and the size of the room (you can see a detailed chart based on visual acuity calculations here ). But if you use fonts that are 24-32 point size as a minimum, you will usually be safe.

    Use Visuals Instead of Text Slides

    Audiences don’t want you to read slides full of text to them – surveys show it is the most annoying thing presenters can do (here is the latest survey on what audiences tell me annoys them about PowerPoint presentations ). So use visuals instead of paragraphs of text. Use graphs to illustrate numeric data. Use diagrams to show processes or flows of information or goods. Use pictures to show a person, place or object. Use media clips to bring the views of others into your presentation. There are many more visuals that you can use.     Practice and Rehearse

    Creating your presentation at the last minute is not a good idea because it does not allow you to practice and rehearse. Practice is when you sit with your presentation and mentally review what you are going to say and how you want the flow to work. Practice is not enough, although many presenters think it is sufficient. You must also rehearse your presentation by standing and delivering it as if it was for real. This is the only way to check your words, your visuals and whether the message is as clear as you want it to be. It is also the only way to truly check your timing to make sure you don’t run over the allotted time.

    End Your Presentation with Next Steps

    In my opinion, the single worst way to end your presentation is with a slide that has the word “Questions. ” in big bold text on it. This type of ending invites your audience to question everything you have just said and does not move them the last step towards the goal you had set for your presentation. As I have recommended to many of the presenters I have worked with, end your presentation talking about the next steps that you want the audience to take to use the information you have provided. Invite discussion of the next steps if there is time, but end with a strong call to action so the audience is clear what they are to do next. Without a call to action, the audience is likely to do nothing further, and your presentation goal will not have been achieved.

    By using these five tips, your next PowerPoint business presentation will be more effective because you will provide a structure for your message and deliver it in a way that the audience will understand it. The success of your presentation is mostly determined before you ever get up to speak. Take the time to prepare using these ideas and look forward to many successful PowerPoint business presentations.

But proceed with caution: The Better Business Bureau warns of scams. and a search of “vending machines” on the Federal Trade Commission’s website unearths dozens of fines and lawsuits.

    Here are a half dozen tips for getting into the vending-machine business safely and profitably.

    1. Decide on the vending machine type. Many vending machines are filled with a selection of drinks and snack foods. Others focus more narrowly on a particular category, such as ice cream, popcorn, cigarettes, videos (think Redbox ), or personal hygiene. Some machines dispense individual units; others offer items in bulk, such as hard candy and gumballs.
    2. Get the proper licenses. In some states you’ll need a seller’s permit to operate vending machines, and many states require you to charge sales tax on the items in the machines. The tax varies by state, as does the minimum price that launches the requirement to collect the tax. Be sure to check with your local licensing office to find about the requirements in your area.
    3. Buy the machines. Decide whether you want to buy new or used machines. Prices can vary wildly: A new machine often runs a few thousand dollars, while used ones go for a few hundred or less on Craigslist. eBay. or Amazon. Keep in mind that all machines eventually break down, so you’ll need to either hire someone to repair them or learn to do so yourself. (Tip: You can buy parts from a manufacturer such as Vendors Exchange International .)
    4. Buy or lease a truck. Depending on how large your operation is, you’ll need a van — or, perhaps, a specialized beverage truck — to carry products from machine to machine. A used truck starts at about $5,500 at places like Specialty Trux. or you can lease a basic truck for about $500 a month.
    5. Find a supplier. You can buy products in bulk at a local big-box store or go online. Check out sites like Candymachines.com for bulk candy, or SmartVending for a full line of supplies. Markups will vary, depending on the product. Bulk items, such as candy and gumballs can be marked up 200 to 300 percent, while single items can typically be marked up between 60 and 100 percent. Of course, the more products you buy, the better price you’ll get, so you may have to settle for lower markups when just starting out in order to be competitive, and then increase them as you add machines.
    6. Secure a location or two. Where you place your vending machines will determine how successful you are. Check out each site before you approach its owner. Look for a place that gets a lot of foot traffic, such as an airport, a parking lot, a shopping mall, a large office building, or a busy waiting room. Once you select a location, approach the owner and work out a deal. Some vending machine operators offer the owner a small percentage of their profits; others donate a portion of sales to charity. NAMA, in its publication Vending 101 [PDF], suggests that you sign a written contract whenever you place a machine.
    7. Service your machines. Once your machines are placed, it will be up to you to keep them clean, well-stocked, and in working order. You may be able to do this by visiting once a week, but if the machine is popular, you may need to turn up more often.

    Of course, all of this isn’t quite as easy as earning money while you sleep. But with careful planning, hard work, and a little luck, you can run a successful vending-machine business.

    Five Tips to Make PowerPoint Business Presentations More Effective

    Using PowerPoint in a Business Presentation?
    These five tips will make your communication more effective

    It is almost expected today that you will use PowerPoint in business presentations. It can be used to add visuals to the message and is an easy way to create a leave-behind handout or e-mail the presentation to others later. But too often business presenters aren’t as effective as they could be when delivering a PowerPoint presentation. Here are five tips drawn from my training programs for making your next PowerPoint business presentation more effective.

    Start with Structure First

    I always start my workshops by suggesting that presenters plan their presentation on paper before they sit down at the computer. Start by defining the goal of the presentation – what you want the audience to do, feel, understand or act on when you are done. Next, describe where the audience is today in terms of their knowledge, trust of you, attitudes and roles in the organization. Once you have the starting point and destination, you can now plan the route that you will use to take the audience through your presentation. This is just like a GPS does when determining the best route from your location to a destination (this article discusses the GPS approach to planning your presentation and includes a video of me explaining the idea). Using sticky notes to lay out the main ideas and supporting data is a good way to see the entire presentation at once. Now you can decide where visuals will add to your message and what those visuals should be.

    Use Colors Fonts that are Easy to See

    You don’t need to have a graphic design background in order to design slides that are visually appealing. Decide on a simple standard look for your slides so that the audience has visual consistency throughout the presentation. Select background and text colors that have enough contrast so that the text will be easy to read. Instead of guessing at whether the colors have enough contrast, check the colors with the Color Contrast Calculator. For any text, research tells us that a sans-serif font, like Arial or Calibri, is easier to read when projected, so use one of these fonts. For font size, it depends on the size of the screen and the size of the room (you can see a detailed chart based on visual acuity calculations here ). But if you use fonts that are 24-32 point size as a minimum, you will usually be safe.

    Use Visuals Instead of Text Slides

    Audiences don’t want you to read slides full of text to them – surveys show it is the most annoying thing presenters can do (here is the latest survey on what audiences tell me annoys them about PowerPoint presentations ). So use visuals instead of paragraphs of text. Use graphs to illustrate numeric data. Use diagrams to show processes or flows of information or goods. Use pictures to show a person, place or object. Use media clips to bring the views of others into your presentation. There are many more visuals that you can use.     Practice and Rehearse

    Creating your presentation at the last minute is not a good idea because it does not allow you to practice and rehearse. Practice is when you sit with your presentation and mentally review what you are going to say and how you want the flow to work. Practice is not enough, although many presenters think it is sufficient. You must also rehearse your presentation by standing and delivering it as if it was for real. This is the only way to check your words, your visuals and whether the message is as clear as you want it to be. It is also the only way to truly check your timing to make sure you don’t run over the allotted time.

    End Your Presentation with Next Steps

    In my opinion, the single worst way to end your presentation is with a slide that has the word “Questions. ” in big bold text on it. This type of ending invites your audience to question everything you have just said and does not move them the last step towards the goal you had set for your presentation. As I have recommended to many of the presenters I have worked with, end your presentation talking about the next steps that you want the audience to take to use the information you have provided. Invite discussion of the next steps if there is time, but end with a strong call to action so the audience is clear what they are to do next. Without a call to action, the audience is likely to do nothing further, and your presentation goal will not have been achieved.

    By using these five tips, your next PowerPoint business presentation will be more effective because you will provide a structure for your message and deliver it in a way that the audience will understand it. The success of your presentation is mostly determined before you ever get up to speak. Take the time to prepare using these ideas and look forward to many successful PowerPoint business presentations.

    How to Make Business Brochures That Stand Out

    Once you’ve created great business cards. it’s time to make brochures to show off your company. Brochures let you showcase your business–your products or services and your purpose. They hold more information than do business cards, so you can include additional contact information. Instead of including only your usual social media handles for Twitter and Facebook, for instance, consider adding a link to your Yelp page.

    The industry standard for brochure design is either QuarkXPress 9 or Adobe InDesign–both of which cost hundreds of dollars. Luckily, you don’t need these programs to design professional-looking brochures .

    Microsoft Word, while not ideal for desktop publishing, will work if you’ve got the right template. Don’t rely on Word’s preloaded templates–Microsoft’s Office website has over 80 free brochure and booklet templates for both Word and Publisher. You can find additional free Word brochure templates on HP’s website for small and medium-size businesses.

    Mac users can design attractive brochures in Apple’s iWork Pages. Pages features basic templates, but additional free iWork templates can be found on the iWork Templates Blog and on iWork Community .

    Looking for a desktop publishing program? Try PagePlus Starter Edition. which is free and features master pages, column flow, and the ability to move and lock text boxes and images. The full version of PagePlus has more options and costs $100.

    Brother’s CreativeCenter website lets you design a trifold brochure for free. If you’d rather stay online, MyCreativeShop is an online brochure-maker with hundreds of customizable brochure designs. The site has two-panel and three-panel brochure designs, as well as 4-, 8-, and 12-page booklet templates. Each design template costs $69, but you can try out a design for free before you purchase it.

    HP’s Marketsplash also offers brochure designs–over 250. in fact–that you can customize using HP’s online tool. Epson’s CreativeZone has a number of free downloadable trifold brochure templates, as does Brother’s CreativeCenter .

    If you decide to print brochures yourself, it’s best to have a printer that supports two-sided (duplex) printing, such as the HP Officejet 6000 Wireless. The decision to print on your own will mostly depend on how many brochures you want to print. If you’re printing over a hundred brochures, you may want to consider outsourcing because many print shops will include folding or assembly.

    To find out if your printer supports duplex printing, go to the the Printer Properties menu and look for an option that says something like “Two-sided (Duplex) Printing” or “Print on both sides.” If you can’t find such an option in the menu, your printer doesn’t support duplexing, or you may need to download additional drivers. Because brochures are always two-sided, automatic duplex printing will save you the hassle of having to flip over each sheet manually.

    Automatic duplexing works best with 16-pound to 28-pound paper, but can work with paper that has a basis weight of up to 32 pounds .

    A printer that handles double-sided printing, like the HP Officejet 6000, is the best bet for brochure-making. You can outsource brochure printing to an online print shop such as Vistaprint. Vistaprint starts at $290 for 500 brochures, and that price includes full color on both sides. Additional features will cost you just a little extra: $4 if you want to upload a photo or design, $1.50 for a map, and $1.50 if you want a PDF version as well (prices are subject to change, of course).

    Some of the more well-known printing companies are considerably more expensive: FedEx Kinko’s starts at $1.03 per brochure (based on an order of 1500), though that price includes double-sided printing in full color, as well as folding.
