Windows XP Mode consists of a full copy of the Windows XP operating system that runs as a virtual machine (VM ) on Windows Virtual PC, a Type 2 client hypervisor. End users must provide the XP VM with anti-virus software, but not its own license, as it is licensed through the host Windows 7 instance. Early versions required certain hardware virtualization -enabled CPU models; currently the host computers must simply be powerful enough to run two operating systems. XP Mode is available as a free download for Professional, Ultimate, and Enterprise editions of Windows 7. Windows XP Mode can be installed on individual computers, or XP virtual machines can be deployed in a manner similar to virtualized applications, using the Microsoft Enterprise Desktop Virtualization (MED-V) tool.

Windows XP Mode is intended to allow widespread migration to Windows 7 without having to rewrite or replace applications. The previous version of Windows, Windows Vista. was not popular in enterprise environments and as a result many companies have been using Windows XP for nearly ten years. Windows XP Mode is often the most economical option for companies that have invested heavily in Windows XP-based line-of-business applications, which are difficult and expensive to migrate. The main drawback of Windows XP Mode is that IT departments will be have to manage two OS images for each user where Windows XP Mode is used. Alternative solutions include various application virtualization techniques, migrating to newer applications, and application compatibility shims. However, the alternatives to XP mode are generally more expensive and labor-intensive to implement.

Windows XP will no longer be supported by Microsoft after April 8, 2014. Although PCs can continue to run Windows XP after that date, they may become more vulnerable to viruses and other security risks.Microsoft recommends that their customers should consider purchasing a new computer if their old computer running XP is not capable of upgrading to Windows 8 .

“I wasn’t terribly interested in marketing in college,” says Kate Beihl, chief marketing officer at MetaCommunications in Iowa City.

But in 2003, when Beihl was hunting for a job in Chicago, where she lived at the time, she applied for a marketing position at what was then called Children’s Memorial Hospital (now called the Ann Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago).

“I didn’t have very much of an idea of what it was. But it was this cool job where you were going to work on a website and on print materials. You were going to do a little design. You were going to do some writing and planning and events. And that diversity of tasks was intriguing to me.”

Beihl ended up landing the job as marketing coordinator at the hospital and found that, in fact, she loved marketing. “I loved the variety of work that we were doing,” she says. “I loved the inside marketing that we were doing: Having a single client and being able to really, deeply understand the way the work that we did, whether it was creating brochures or a new campaign or signage, all led back to the growth of the organization.”

Online storage services that let you upload important files to a web-based server and access them from any of your other computers and mobile devices, are a brilliant resources for businesses.

Online storage services that let you upload important files to a web-based server and access them from any of your other computers and mobile devices, are a brilliant resources for businesses.

They usually use a virtual drive that exists on your desktop in some manner, and it is linked directly to your online storage space. The contents of this virtual hard drive remain in sync across all of the desktops, notebooks and mobile devices on which you have installed the client software.

You designate which files or folders that you want to be part of the virtual drive; everything on that drive is then automatically uploaded to an online server. From there it is accessible (by logging on with a username and a password) from your other devices, either from another installed version of the application, or via a web interface. And you can grant other people access.

However, with so many to choose from, which one should you plump for? I chose five services that store, sync and share your files in the cloud: DriveHQ, Dropbox, OpenDrive, SpiderOak and ZumoDrive and put them head-to-head to help you decide.

I reviewed them using their desktop front-end clients, and I used only the free account versions of these services (because everybody likes free stuff). Most of these also offer paid upgrades; in those cases, I list the other options that are available.

Incidentally, until recently Microsoft offered its own data synchronisation service, called Live Mesh, but it’s now defunct. Another Microsoft service, Windows Live Sync, doesn’t have direct syncing access to an online storage space. However, features of Live Mesh have been incorporated into the upcoming version of Windows Live Sync as part of Windows Live Essentials.

The new Windows Live Sync will give you 2GB of online storage for syncing files. Unfortunately, the next version of Windows Live Essentials won’t run on Windows XP, so XP users may want to check out the services in this roundup.

How we tested

I tried out the Windows version of the desktop application for each service. I installed the client on two laptops – one running Windows XP, the other Windows 7. The Windows XP laptop was left in my home office, turned on and connected to the onternet. The Windows 7 machine was taken to various locations with Wi-Fi access. I experimented with files ranging from 1MB up to 20MB in size.

A note about security: While all of these services employ some basic means of password protection for your files, and most offer assurances that your files travel over ‘secure connections’, the fact of the matter is that you are still uploading your personal and business files to a remote server. So beware.

The job can be rewarding knowing I’m helping our Senior Citizens and Veterans. I feel a sense of accomplishment within my position. Have become a Mentor for other Managers with recognition of job well done from the Owners and Regional Manager. The office I run and become a “model” office of how to do and what to do along with recognition for this as well. I feel I manage the office well and am proud of my employees.

    Cons: Long hours and feeling underpaid. On call 24/7 which often interrupts time with my family. Hi demand of deadlines and paperwork with many duties to complete and not having enough time to do so. The lack of TV and radio advertising to help build business. The constant struggle to find good Care Providers to place in Senior’s homes. Having to find Care Providers to fill in on cases over weekends, so the lack of professionalism with the independent contractors hired. Stress level is also very high worrying about keeping cases staffed and bringing in new cases.
