The University of Massachusetts Lowell is pleased to announce that its Master of Education Degree in Curriculum and Instruction is now available entirely online. Offered through the University’s Graduate School of Education, the program is created for experienced teachers interested in broadening their professional knowledge and expanding the contributions they make to education. This program is designed for licensed teachers who are not seeking a new license, but are interested in obtaining a graduate level degree that will allow them to apply this knowledge to improve teaching and enhance the curriculum development process within their school system.

This online M.Ed. program provides experienced practitioners with a broad understanding of curriculum development and an in-depth examination of new instructional techniques. By analyzing contemporary practices and theories relating to knowledge acquisition, graduates of this program are better prepared to enhance student learning and make significant contributions to the overall improvement of their schools.

On a separate sheet of paper, submit a brief, carefully worded statement indicating your immediate and long-range goals, relevant work history, academic honors/awards received, any teaching experience and/or research conducted/published that may be pertinent to your graduate program. [two-page maximum recommended]

3. Download this form and make three (3) copies of it. You are required to send three (3) letters of recommendation. They should be from instructors who have taught you, ideally in the field to which you are applying. Recommendations may also be from employers or supervisors who are in a position to compare your performance to that of your peers. Recommendation letters should be signed sealed in envelopes by the referees and mailed to the Graduate School Admissions Office, UMass Lowell, with the other application materials.

4. Provide a complete and official transcript with appropriate degrees awarded in a sealed envelope. Include transcripts from all colleges and universities you have attended. These should be sent in sealed signed envelopes. If you received your degree from UMass Lowell, it is not necessary for you to request a transcript from the UMass Lowell Registrar’s Office.

5. If you are applying for Financial Aid, please fill out the FAFSA form at www.fafsa.ed.gov .

Counselling Psychology (CP)

The MEd and EdD programs are designed for students interested in a variety of positions in education and in the community and in professional positions in agencies offering counselling and psychotherapy services. These programs can be pursued on a part-time or full-time basis. However, the EdD program requires one year of full-time study.

The CP Program comprises three fields:

1. Global Mental Health and Counselling Psychology NEW

Master of Education

This new internationally focused MEd in Global Mental Health and Counselling Psychology provides students with the cutting edge theory and practice of psychology and mental health.

2. Counselling and Psychotherapy

This program trains students, through intensive coursework and supervised practicum, to work as professional counsellors in a variety of applied settings, including educational, vocational, and mental health. Information Assurance (IA) is defined by Department of Defense Instruction (DoDI) 8500.01E as “measures that protect and defend information and information systems by ensuring their availability, integrity, authentication, confidentiality, and non-repudiation.” Successful protection of Department of Defense (DoD) assets requires policy compliance and an understanding of the vulnerabilities humans face when interacting with information systems. Personnel and Readiness Information Management (P R IM) offers a suite of services to ensure the successful implementation of IA measures and compliance with DoD policy.

P R IM offers guidance and training in the following areas:

    • Department of Defense Information Assurance Certification and Accreditation Program (DIACAP). DIACAP supports the Certification and Accreditation (C A) of DoD Information Technology (IT) systems by providing the framework and requirements for C A to be utilized by organizations and system owners. P R IM provides oversight to and/or manages the C A process on Defense Human Resources Activity (DHRA) components information systems.
  • Employee Awareness. Employee awareness is a countermeasure against the vulnerabilities discussed above and a means to reduce human-related risks. To maximize the protection of systems and information, it is essential to maintain a federal workforce that is aware of, trained on, and educated about information security and assurance.     In terms of the education sector nationally, we can show teachers with MEd and EdD degrees earn more than their counterparts who don’t hold advanced degrees:

    Master s Program in Mathematics

    The Department of Mathematics offers two master of science degrees and two master of education degrees in mathematics. These programs are designed to prepare students for doctoral research, and teaching in colleges and public schools, and to provide the mathematical background needed to pursue careers in applied mathematics, statistics, computer science, business, industry, and many other areas.

    Admission Requirements: Applications to all graduate programs are handled by The Graduate College. In addition to university requirements, for unconditional admission, the department requires:

    • A preferred score of 900 on the verbal and quantitative portions of the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) general test.
    • An undergraduate GPA of 2.75 (4.0 scale) in the last 60 hours leading to a bachelor s degree.

    On rare occasion, a student may be granted conditional admission if his/her grade point average is less than a 2.75. This student will be required to meet conditions stipulated by the department.

    Financial Aid: Mathematics graduate students are encouraged to work as graduate instructional assistants. The stipends for these assistantships are comparable to the national norms and generally require teaching two courses per semester. There are also graduate scholarships available.

    In the higher education master’s program, we develop professionals who plan, operate and improve the effectiveness of higher education. This is accomplished by researching the historical, theoretical and philosophical aspects of the field.

    We provide course work and practical experience opportunities leading to a Master of Education degree in Higher Education. The degree prepares you for entry-level and mid-level administrative positions in colleges and universities that include, but are not limited to, work in:

    Our curriculum focuses on higher education theory and practice. Specializations are available in student affairs administration, community college leadership and general administration.

    A unique program feature is the Master’s Cohort in College Student Personnel. Each academic year, a cohort of 10 to 12 students is selected to take courses on a full-time basis while working in a graduate assistantship in UNT’s Division of Student Affairs. This cohort format, which lasts two years, is offered in addition to our standard master’s program.

    Requirements and how to apply

    • Applicants should hold a first or upper second-class honours degree or the equivalent from an international institution.
    • Relevant employment experience in the health sector is taken into consideration. Applicants who have a lower second-class honours degree but have relevant employment experience in the health sector may be considered.

    Teaching and learning

    You learn through a mix of lectures, class discussions, seminars, presentations, case study analyses, interactive computer-based exercises, a virtual learning environment, guided independent learning and individual supervision.

    Lectures are discussion-oriented and there is a lot of group work giving you the opportunity to discuss solutions to problems, or to design a public health programmes drawn from your own experiences. Group presentations also form a significant part of the programme.

    In terms of contact hours, for every 15-credit module you study, you will have 30 hours of teaching time and around 120 hours of self-directed/independent study. This means that as a full-time student you will have 3 hours of teaching time and 12 hours of self-directed study for each course each week.

    Assessment

    You are assessed on a range of areas including your project dissertation, exams, assignments and group work.

    Modules

    From the basic concepts of epidemiology to the kinds of socio-economic conditions that influence health equality, the programme s core content gives you a strong foundation in public health theory and research methods.

    There are seven core modules and a dissertation. The dissertation gives you an opportunity to design and carry out a major research project in a public health topic of your choice. Many students use the dissertation as an opportunity to apply their learning to a public health issue that is important to them. The full course content represents 180 credits which includes 60 credits for the dissertation. As a part-time student, you will take 30 credits per term and as a full-time student you will take 60 credits per term. Find out about the specific term dates here .

    This course will give you a thorough grounding in research methods so you will be able to analyse data and design evidence-based public health programmes. You will also develop a thorough understanding of public health theories from exploring the socio-political context in which public health is positioned to unpicking the key measures you need to put in place to inform policy, practice and research.

    • Public health (15 credits)

    You will begin by looking at the socio-historical context for public health and consider the ethical issues that arise in relation to public health interventions. Because public health is a very broad discipline, content experts from across and beyond City will teach sessions in this module to reflect the subject s reach.

  • Epidemiology (15 credits)

    Epidemiology is the study of disease in relation to the individual person, their place in the world and their life cycle. This module will give you an introduction to the basic concepts of the discipline.

  • Global health (15 credits)

    Examining the key concepts and debates in global health, in this module you study how global health burden is measured and mapped, and consider the roles of the different actors and stakeholders involved. You will use case studies to assess how political, economic, social and structural forces interact, both at the local and global levels, to influence the global heath agenda.

  • Social determinants of health (15 credits)

    This module will give you an introduction to the concepts and evidence relating to health patterns in our societies including differences in health across the socio-economic gradient, between genders and ethnic groups. You will examine explanations for these systematic differences and critically assess strategies, interventions and policies aimed at reducing health inequalities.

    • Introduction to research methods and applied data analysis (30 credits)

    You will develop a thorough understanding of the principles, theory and epistemology of research and data analysis methods. Equal emphasis is given to the teaching of qualitative and quantitative research methods and study designs.

  • Advanced data analysis (15 credits)

    In this module we will introduce a number of advanced data analysis methods and lead you through their background, rationale, practical application and interpretation, using step-by step-explanations. Knowledge of these will help you understand, evaluate and draw informed conclusions from the complex analyses of other researchers, address how you will use the data in projects you design and encourage you to analyse existing datasets in alternative ways.

  • Advanced research methods (15 credits)

    The module builds on the work completed in the introduction to research methods and data analysis module. It aims to further develop your understanding of research methods in a health context, introducing more complex forms of study design and higher-level methods of appraisal and literature review. Several research methods will be examined in-depth with consideration of both quantitative and qualitative methods.

    *Residency requirements may vary by denomination. Most United Methodist students must complete 1/3 of their degree (5 courses) on campus. This can be accomplished by attending 5 week-long intensives (2-3 per year) .

    The MACM equips people for leadership and service to the church with 9 core courses (27 semester hours) and 6 elective courses (18 semester hours). We ve made this easy with our new Core + 4 Curriculum. Add a concentration to your MACM by using 4 of your 6 elective courses to specialize in your calling.

    CORE + 4 = MACM with a Concentration

    1. Complete 45 hours of credits (27 core curriculum credits and 18 elective credits)

    2. Residency (on-campus) requirements vary.

    For a primarily online Master of Arts in Christian Ministries, students can earn a degree with two weeks of on-campus intensive courses over a two-year program.

    Most United Methodist students must complete 1/3 of the degree in residency. A two-year program can be completed with five on-campus courses (15 credits), or two to three weeks on campus per year.

    3. Enroll in Hybrid Contextual Ministries as soon as you begin your M.A.C.M. if you plan to complete your degree in two years. All theological students (except M.T.S.) must enroll in the Contextual Ministries Program, which consists of:

    A. Professionally facilitated ministry group (MINgroup) that meets weekly online and in the Intensive Week each term for three terms.

    B. Ministry in a church or community site in your area (10 – 20 hours per week)

    C. Formation courses

    The MS in Applied Economics Program develops skill in economic reasoning, and in constructing and estimating economic models through the use of econometrics and other quantitative techniques. This is accomplished by a rigorous and demanding curriculum and a talented and dedicated staff of instructors. This is a ten-course degree program, with classes offered in the evenings at the Washington, D.C., center of The Johns Hopkins University (near Dupont Circle) and online.     Dolphin Therapy Autism and Dolphin Research

    Research on autism and wild dolphin therapy in Panama City Beach

    A University of Montreal student in Child and Youth Care Work (translated from the French: psychoeducation), previous Water Planet intern, has spent the month of June and July of 2004 and the summer of 2005 in Panama City for the field research portion of a Masters thesis meant to shed some light on the subject of Dolphin Assisted Therapy.
    The subject of her dissertation is The impact of the Water Planet Harmony Program on the adaptative behaviors of children with pervasive developmental disorders .

    How the project was conducted

    Genevieve David had selected Panama City Beach and Water Planet s Harmony Program as a platform for her data collection. Specific screening criteria (outline below) were used to select a limited number of children, who were observed and video taped in their daily activities before and after they travelled to Florida. Genevieve interviewed the parents in order to corroborate the child s behaviors. The children were sporadically video taped during their week at Water Planet. Back in Quebec, Genevieve has analyzed the data collected on the children s behavior by running it through a standardized cipher stencil. This was done in conjunction with another interview with the parents to have their perception of the child s behavior after their week with Water Planet. Follow up interviews with the parents were conducted 1 months, 3 months and 6 months after the program at Water Planet.

    The children were signed up with their parents to a 1-week structured program (Harmony) in Panama City Beach, Florida. During the week, four 4-hour boat trips gave the children and their families the opportunity to have close in-water encounters with wild bottlenose dolphins in their natural environment along the beaches of Shell Island on the Gulf of Mexico. All the activities were facilitated and supervised by qualified staff. The children were not forced to get in the water. They did it at their own pace.

    The second half of the day was spent on land with a series of sensory stimulation workshops including expressive arts, aquatic bodywork and musical games. The main theme was of course dolphins and the marine environment.
    The goal of this research project is to verify the assumption that participating in such an intensive sensory integration program including wild dolphin therapies can significantly improve the adaptative behaviors of children with pervasive developmental disorders either by qualitatively or quantitatively improving the child s ability to communicate, to socialize and/or to improve his/her interests and behaviors.

    Genevieve David has spent the summer of 2006 in Panam City to continue her data collection in order to broaden and confirm the results of the first part of her study. At the same time, she functioned as Internship and Research Coordinator for Water Planet. Together with the Water Planet management, she has setup and implemented the new interns training program and continued her research data collection. Genevieve David has successfully completed her Masters Degree thesis in the fall of 2007 (contact us for a full version in PDF format in French only). The research project continues and we encourage parents with children diagnosed with PDD to participate.

    This MSIT degree focuses on the need to adapt to the changing intruder landscape and to gain deeper understanding of risk management, information security, and data privacy. It draws upon the expertise in research, operations and analysis from the world-famous CERT Coordination Center (CERT®/CC) located at Carnegie Mellon’s Software Engineering Institute. Designated as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense Education by the National Security Agency, Carnegie Mellon is uniquely qualified to provide such training.

    Prerequisites to apply (see all admissions requirements here ):

    • One undergraduate level Python or object-oriented (Java, C++, C#) programming class or equivalent experience prior to admission is recommended but not required.
    • At least three years of relevant, full-time professional work experience; although our student average is closer to eight years of experience.

    Other Electives for Distance Students: you are limited to distance courses listed in the MSIT distance catalog PDF. While we can’t offer every Heinz College/ISM campus class by distance, we do try to bring in the best of the bunch. That does include some courses from the School of Computer Science because they have an online software engineering degree and will allow qualified MSIT students to take their distance courses.

    To earn the MSIT-Information Security Assurance degree, you must:

    • Complete 144 units of course credit (this includes required core, elective and approved transfer credits);
    • Successfully pass all required core courses (with a letter grade or approved exemption);
    • Achieve a minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0; and
    • Satisfy all academic requirements within five years from admission.

    MEd in Curriculum and Instruction

    In addition to meeting the specific requirements of their chosen degree program, successful completion of the Concordia Portland Online Master of Education degree requires candidates to meet and demonstrate the general program objectives including:

    • An understanding of leadership contributions made by all teachers in the classroom, the school, the district, and the profession
    • Skills in developing, implementing, and assisting curricular and instructional plans that integrate disciplines, apply current educational research findings, encourage parental involvement, consider students’ current developmental levels, and exhibit sensitivity to individual student differences and cultural backgrounds

    All candidates in the Concordia University-Portland MEd programs will complete a required capstone research experience. Candidates will select to complete either an Action Research course, a Thesis course, or a Practitioner Inquiry course.

    During the Action Research course, candidates will learn more about action research methodology, complete final edits of the literature review, and design a complete action research proposal including data collection methods and analysis approaches. The developed proposal will NOT be implemented with students/participants during the course.

    The Action Research experience provides candidates with requisite skills and means to pursue the transformative practice called “Action Research” in their classroom, school, district or other work environment. The design of the capstone project closely aligns with current classroom realities, with district and school requirements, and the needs of teachers and students.

    The Thesis option offers candidates the opportunity to investigate, in depth, a topic in the field of education. The candidate will explore relevant literature and present a thesis following the procedure established by the College of Education.

    The Practitioner Inquiry course focuses on the reflective acts of the candidate as an educator seeking to improve teaching practice. Premised in the self-study research methodological traditions (Samaras, 2011), Practitioner Inquiry provides the opportunity to reflect on teaching practice and generate improvements based on classroom observation. Practitioner Inquiry focuses on the educator and her/his own practices, developing skills of inquiry, observation, reflection, and action in teachers.

    Nursing

    UTA provides advanced and comprehensive education that prepares graduates for careers as health care leaders, innovators, and researchers. Our programs are challenging, but our graduates know the value and quality of a UTA education and what it means to be a Maverick nurse.

    The BSN program is designed for individuals seeking to become a registered nurse. The RN to BSN program is designed for practicing registered nurses with associate or diploma degrees who are seeking to advance their education and obtain a BSN. These programs are offered in both on-campus and online format. You can choose either format.

    Our master s specialty degrees prepare students for advanced practice, management and research endeavors to address a changing health care landscape. Both full-time and part-time study options are available as well as online and classroom-based programs.

    The Department of Kinesiology accepts students for two undergraduate degree programs and two master’s level programs, a new Ph.D. in Kinesiology, and a Public Health program scheduled to begin in Fall 2017.

    About The Department Of Psychology

    The Department of Psychology offers Major and Minor Programs in Psychology in a setting which allows students to excel academically, professionally, socially and personally. The Department of Psychology offers course work leading to the baccalaureate, masters and educational specialist degrees in psychology with a Black psychology and multicultural emphasis.

    The Department of Psychology exposes students to the science of behavior, provides a foundation for the pursuit of advanced degrees in the field and in related disciplines, and offers students multicultural perspectives for understanding human nature and functioning at undergraduate and graduate levels.

    A unique multicultural programmatic framework distinguishes our programs. The emphasis of this thrust is primarily, although not exclusively, on the reconceptualization and application of psychology to the experiences of people of African descent.

    The psychology department s programs grew out of the university s recognition of the need for more psychologically trained Black para-professionals, professionals and scientists to address the critical shortage in the areas of human services education and research. Additionally, in the wake of the 1960 s there was a growing sensitivity in American society regarding the importance of culture in mental health and human behavior, especially where racial and cultural minorities were concerned. Given that FAMU is predominantly African American, increased awareness of the significance of culture led to the incorporation of an emphasis on African American cultural and minority issues into the curriculum and overall programmatic thrust of the Department.

    Current Offerings in University-Based Programs

    Introduction

    In 1995, with the generous support of the Kellogg Foundation, Seton Hall University undertook a major research project to examine the impact of nonprofit management education programs on the nonprofit community. The first phase of the project, based on a survey of universities and colleges, sought to answer the following questions: What is the current universe of graduate programs that focus on the management of nonprofit organizations? Where are they situated in the university–in colleges of arts and sciences, business, public administration, or elsewhere? What courses are offered? What degrees are granted? Do course offerings differ by type of degree granted?

    In the second phase of the study, which began in 1996, the impact of these programs on the nonprofit sector was examined. Site visits were made to ten of these nonprofit management education programs, where focus groups were conducted with major stakeholders. These focus groups were an initial attempt to gather data on the impact of nonprofit management programs. What is the indirect effect of nonprofit management education programs on the nonprofit sector? How do alumni of these programs influence the nonprofit organizations that employ them?

    A follow-up study was conducted in 2002 to supplement the initial findings. This website contains the most recent data available, with a particular emphasis on the current census of university-based programs.

    To further our understanding of curricular trends in nonprofit management education, a research project is currently being conducted that undertakes a comprehensive review of the syllabi of graduate programs in nonprofit management education. The project is a review of the knowledge base of graduate-level courses in programs offered by institutional members of the Nonprofit Academic Centers Council being conducted at the level of the syllabus, including a review of content areas, topics covered, required readings, and assignments.

    Census of Nonprofit Management Programs

    The current universe of programs that focus on the management of nonprofit organizations found over two-hundred and ninety-two colleges and universities with courses in nonprofit management. Ninety-one programs offer noncredit courses such as Fundraising, Managing Your Nonprofit Organization, and Governance. Many of the seventy-three programs with courses through continuing education. have similar courses designed for the nonprofit manager, including Strategic Planning, Human Resource Management and Financial Management. An additional one-hundred and thirty-two schools offer at least one course for undergraduate credit. nearly seventy with an American Humanics affiliation, (an alliance of colleges, universities and nonprofit organizations preparing undergraduates for careers with youth and human service agencies). Finally, two hundred colleges and universities have at least one course within a graduate department. One-hundrrd and sixty-eight of these programs offer a graduate degree with a concentration (three or more courses) in the management of nonprofit organizations, while an additional thirty-two universities offer one or two graduate courses, usually financial management and generic nonprofit management.

    Graduate Programs

    Particular attention has been paid to those colleges and universities offering a concentration in nonprofit management those programs with at least three courses focused specifically on issues of management in nonprofit organizations. As of March 2009, there were one-hundred and sixty-eight colleges and universities with graduate degree programs. throughout the United States, that have a concentration in nonprofit management.

    In what regions of the United States are these programs found? About 36% of these programs are located in the Northeast, a slightly higher percent then were found five years ago, while about 25% are located in the Midwest, down more than 5% from five years ago when it was the region that dominated. At present, 19% are located in the South and another 20% are located in the West, both slight increases from the last update.

    The Impact of Nonprofit Management Education Programs on the Nonprofit Community

    Stakeholders were asked to comment on four major questions regarding the degree program, 1) What are the goals of the degree program. 2) What knowledge, skills and values should be taught in these programs. 3) What has been the outcome and impact of these programs on the nonprofit community. and 4) How would you measure the effectiveness of nonprofit management programs.

    The “Best Place” Debate

    In an attempt to illuminate the advantages and disadvantages of the various nonprofit management degree programs, the authors undertook a critical examination of the curricular elements of nonprofit management degree programs in colleges of business, public administration and social work. Is there a “Best Place” for nonprofit management education programs to be housed within the university? As part of this study, the authors answered the following questions: What are the major curricular elements in each type of program? How do the curricular elements of these programs compare with generic management degree programs? What are the central challenges facing managers of nonprofit organizations and how are these challenges addressed within each type of program? Based on the curricular review, does one setting emerge as more favorable for students of nonprofit management? What are the views of stakeholders regarding the “best place” to educate managers?

    The Johns Hopkins MA in Communication provides a cutting-edge curriculum that integrates digital technology with innovative strategic communication and strong writing skills.     Bachelor of Social Work

    The Bachelor of Social Work (BSW ) degree program prepares students for entry-level practice in social work. Ranked number one by the Gourman Report since 1995, the curriculum in the BSW program is strong in class and in field. Approximately two-thirds of the curriculum is in professional courses. A third is in co-requisite courses and electives. Field education is concurrent with class work except in the first semester of the junior year for full and part- time students.

    • Flexible program offers full-time and part-time planned studies; day, evening and Saturday courses; classes available at WSU main campus in Midtown Detroit, and the Macomb and Schoolcraft extension centers. All programs offerings are based on availability.
    • Doctoral level faculty involved in leading research activities brings currency to classroom instruction, while building on values and traditions of social work.
    • Coursework emphasizes a generalist social work practice model preparing students to work with individuals, groups, families, organizations and communities addressing contemporary challenges
