San Francisco Business Times

What s really going on in the Bay Area? Most people look to SFGate.com or the Chronicle. In this day and age of instant information, most doubt how much information is available in a weekly local publication. Hands down, this newspaper has the pulse on the business environment of the Bay Area, with a heavy emphasis to San Francisco. Subscribing for over fifteen years, my workplace is a loyal customer to this great information source. Whether reading about what new businesses or projects are in the area to finding out what homes are selling for in the various Bay Area counties, SF Business Times keeps you on top of the area news.
Whether you are in marketing, real estate, finance, or just nosy about what s going on, there s always some information that makes you say, Gee, that s interesting!
Also, full props to their customer service staff in sending me missing issues (still not sure if it s my mailman or my coworkers) – likely suspects!). Unlike the other paper, I don t need to run to a newsstand and pay for another copy. Check this periodical out!

Their customer service is deplorable. You cannot speak with a human being, basically ever. I called customer service one morning. No one answered after 9am. And no one ever called me back. Any time I have needed to talk to them it was because they screwed up one of our office s subscriptions. Wish they weren t the only game in town. Uggggh!

Was this review ?

As a big fan of information, Knowledge is Power, I was very impressed with the Read to Succeed Seminar I attended at this publication s office. I know the title smacks of a literacy program, but it was actually an informative meeting on how to read the weekly publication to expand on networking and marketing.

In these uncertain economic times, newspapers and jobs are falling by the wayside. Judd Walsh opened my eyes on ways to utilize many of the great sections to find sales leads, build market intelligence, and prospecting. He gave great tips and suggestions.

Some of the most valuable info in the SFBT is in the form of The Lists published weekly and then at the end of the year in a large compendium. These Listings cover topics such as Best Places to Work in the Bay Area to The Top Wineries. Event announcements and articles on the different industries are excellent resources.

I am now going to subscribe to the newspaper. Thanks to Veronica and also the gentleman that gave me a copy of 2009 Zagat Guide.

In the media: Laura Roberts, CEO Pantheon Enterprises and Austin Business Journal

Austin Business Journal “Face 2 Face” speaker series with Laura Roberts, CEO, Pantheon Enterprises

Chad Swiatecki
Staff Writer Austin Business Journal

To become the successful CEO of a forward-thinking chemical company, Laura Roberts had to go from grade school to the school of hard knocks.

During the Austin Business Journal’s monthly Face 2 Face series event Tuesday at Whole Foods Market Inc. s Austin headquarters, Roberts talked about the journey from teaching, which had been her lifelong passion, to leading Phoenix-based Pantheon Enterprises. The company, which has about 50 employees and customers such as Vista Outdoor, is innovating in the world of manufacturing chemicals by creating new formulas that have no negative impact on health or the environment.

Roberts became involved in the business world by helping to manager her father’s small but unprofitable cleaning chemicals business after his death, learning that she’d have to turn the company in a new direction for it to survive. Concern over the negative effects of many industrial chemicals, and concern over the world her children would inherit, caused her to take a green approach to the business.

“When I was younger I was a tree hugger and I had a Kill Corporate America T-shirt,” she said. “But a big shift happened when I realized how much good we could do. The real bulk of the work is figuring out how you get people to change.”

Launching a whole new company wound up being the best strategy for making Roberts’ newfound passion a reality, but it wasn’t easy. She said she was denied by potential investors 300 times before she found one that believed in her vision.

“Only take money from shareholders who are purpose-aligned with you,” she said of turning down term sheets from venture capitalists who wanted almost immediate liquidity. “Not having that can kill the deal, or you later have to sell to get out from under them.”

Holding tight to her vision and belief that industrial companies can operate in an environmentally friendly way led Forbes magazine to call Roberts “The Toxic Avenger” in a company profile. She has embraced that characterization because it helped bring attention to the cause that Pantheon is trying to further.

“You’re in business to maximize shareholder value, but we’re trying to raise the discourse,” she said. “If you’re building profits on the backs of the general population then you’re not really approaching it right. The more transparent you are, the more your shareholders love you.”

Example: There are a few times in life when a meal is so expertly crafted and planned that it is nothing short of genius. Last night, I had one of those meals – the Mahi Mahi.

The dish was excellently prepared. Grilled, juicy, and fresh without a hint of fishiness. A glaze of tangerine sauce brought a hint of tart sweetness. The fish was placed on a mound of sweet plantain rice. The combination of the fish and rice alone was to die for!

However, as only expert chefs can achieve, additional garnishes provided even bolder, beautiful tastes. Pickled onions topping the fish made for an even finer taste experience, while green beans hidden under the fish added freshness and completed each bite

Ad Buyers to TV: You Keep Raising Rates, We Quit Buying Ads

Ad Buyers to TV: You Keep Raising Rates, We Quit Buying Ads

Dave Campanelli isn t playing your game anymore, television executives.

As we head into the biggest week of the year for TV ad sales, Campanelli, one of the major players in the business of buying spots for advertisers, says his clients are are fed up with paying huge year-over-year pricing increases, whether ratings are up or down.

Campanelli, director of national TV at Horizon Media, noted that broadcasts networks handed an unsettling 10 percent price-hike to advertisers last year for the privilege of airing commercials during their primetime shows even though DVRs and streaming have disrupted the way consumers get their entertainment at home, driving commercial ratings down.

The negotiations will begin in earnest at TV upfront presentations to advertisers this coming week, where folks like Campanelli will be looking for deals. Should networks hike prices again this year, advertisers could blow through their budgets pretty prematurely or find somewhere else to advertise.

How many years can advertisers pay 10 percent over 10 percent over 10 percent and just keep buying TV? Campanelli asked rhetorically, of course, because he had the answer. You re going to scare people away from the medium altogether, and it s not like there aren t big places to go spend your money in the digital world.

Campanelli may be playing a little chicken, hoping broadcasters will blink before advertisers do. But he s not wrong.

In case you haven t flipped your calendar over in a while, this is 2017, and there are options. Though television as your parents knew it still has what Campanelli qualified as a relative efficiency compared to other media, the gap is slimming.

And on digital the alternative that many of Horizon s clients are beginning to look at more closely there s less resistance to lowering prices. Digital networks have far more advertising hours available, since the Internet is endless. So they re still mostly just looking to grab more volume or overall dollars. That approach makes actual price-per-thousand impressions (CPM) less of an issue, and thus, more of a bargain.

Everybody loves a deal.

We ll find out in the coming months where pricing for 2017-2018 ends up, and where advertisers ad dollars go.

Here s the remaining TV upfronts calendar:

Fox: Monday, May 15 (afternoon)

Katherine Heigl, Rob Lowe and 10 More Winners and Losers in New Fall TV Schedule (Photos)

Click through to see who won and who lost in TV’s biggest week.

Winner: Katherine Heigl

The star has had a rocky time since leaving “Grey’s Anatomy.” Her spy drama “State of Affairs” got canceled last year by NBC after just one season. But now CBS is ready to bring her back in the legal drama “Doubt.”

Loser: Kermit the Frog

It’s not easy bein’ a 1970s pop culture staple. ABC tried to freshen Kermit and “The Muppets” for a 21st century audience. But viewers just never came around.

Winner: Laverne Cox

With “Orange Is the New Black,” she was the first trans person ever nominated for an acting Emmy. Now she’s got the lead in Fox’s remake of “The Rocky Horror Picture Show.”

The former Brat Packer has remade himself as a middle-aged comedy star, thanks in large part to his scene-stealing on “Parks and Recreation.” But it didn’t work on Fox’s “The Grinder,” which was canceled despite great reviews.

Loser: Patricia Arquette

The former “Medium” star headlined CBS’ “CSI: Cyber,” which turned out to be a rare “CSI: Fail.” The forensics drama was canceled after just two seasons.

Winner: Jerrod Carmichael

The force behind NBC’s topical sitcom “The Carmichael Show” won a crucial renewal for a third season.

Loser: Connie Britton

The former “Friday Night Lights” star is a free agent again after ABC finally canceled her country-music soap “Nashville.”

Winner: Ken Jeong

There aren’t many shows more hated by the critics than “Dr. Ken,” the ABC sitcom based on Jeong’s own experiences as a doctor. But Jeong got the last laugh – and a season 2 renewal.

Loser: Bill Lawrence

Ouch. The “Scrubs” creator had not just one but two series canceled this month: CBS’ “Rush Hour” and NBC’s “Undateable.”

Winner: Kiefer Sutherland

The former “24” star has perhaps the most-talked-about new show of the year. In ABC’s thriller “Designated Survivor” he plays a Cabinet secretary suddenly vaulted into the White House after a terrorist attack.

Winner: Greg Berlanti

Now that “Supergirl” is moving to The CW, super-producer Berlanti will control 40 percent of the network’s programming.

Winner: Kevin James

“The King of Queens” is back. CBS has ordered a new sitcom with the oversize star, “Kevin Can Wait.”

Previous Slide Next Slide

It s been a memorable TV upfront week for Kevin James and Laverne Cox; maybe not so much for Connie Britton and Kermit the Frog

Using Social Media in Recruitment

Social media encompasses a wide range of online networks that connect people. There are many well-es tablished social networks (e.g. Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, etc.) and other new ones being developed and gaining in popularity (e.g. Pinterest, Tumblr, etc.). Although there are some similarities across social media networks, most have distinct functions and styles. For example:

  • Facebook is commonly used for more informal, social interaction;
  • Twitter uses short blurbs of information and brief conversations;
  • LinkedIn is for professional networking;
  • Flickr is for sharing photos and blogging;
  • YouTube is for sharing videos.

These resources can help you decide if your agency is ready to use social media as a tool for recruiting and retaining families, and which networks you might consider using.

Was this review ?

FreeBSD Networking Basics

Beginners to Unix-like operating systems such as FreeBSD are often stymied by their network settings. Sure, the install process may have set up your NIC for you, but where do you go to view these settings, and how do you proceed if your NIC stops working? Since networking is such an integral part of computing, this article will demonstrate how to verify, configure, and optimize your network settings.

Verifying Your Interface Configuration

If you’ve come from a Microsoft background, you’ve probably used either winipcfg or ipconfig /all to verify your network settings at the command line. Unix comes with a similar utility, named ifconfig (for “interface config”). By entering this command, you’ll see all of the system’s interfaces and their settings. Some versions require you to include the -a. or all, switch.

Your output will vary from this, but will contain similarities. This particular system isn’t running the default kernel. I’ve removed the default IPv6, gif. and faith devices from this kernel, so they don’t show in the output.

This system does have three physical interfaces ( rl0. rl1. and ed0 ) and the loopback virtual interface ( lo0 ). Different versions of Unix differ in their interface naming convention. For example, Linux uses eth for Ethernet NICs, so would show their names as eth0. eth1. and eth2. BSD uses the driver name for each NIC, allowing you to differentiate between different chipsets and the features available for each driver. To see the documentation for your NIC’s driver, read section 4 of its driver manual. Note that you don’t include the number of the interface, so look up rl instead of rl0 :

While this system has three NICs, only ed0 is up and running. The two RealTek NICs don’t have cables attached, as indicated by the status: no carrier lines. Accordingly, only ed 0 has an IP address (192.168.2.12), a subnet mask (0xffffff00), and a broadcast address (192.168.2.255).

That subnet mask is written in hex, as indicated by the beginning 0x. This particular mask isn’t too hard to translate into decimal, if you remember that each pair of f characters ( ff ) is equivalent to 255. Thus, the subnet mask here is 255.255.255.0. If you find a pair of hex numbers that aren’t ff (255) or 00 (0), use bc or the built-in calculator to translate that hex pair into decimal for you. For example, if your mask is 0xffffe000 :

Here, I asked bc to translate a base 16, or hex, number as input ( ibase=16 ). Remember to convert any letters to uppercase, or you won’t get the correct answer. Since e0 is decimal 224, this example mask is 255.255.224.0.

Verifying Your Default Gateway

Note that ifconfig gives the applicable status, MTU, IP address, subnet mask, broadcast address, and Ethernet (or MAC) address of each interface. However, it doesn’t give the address of the default gateway or the DNS servers.

To see your default gateway address, use the netstat. or network status, command. Include the -r (routing) switch. Including the -n switch speeds up the results by skipping name resolution:

Note: Linux users can also use the route command to receive similar results. The BSD route command works differently; see man route for details. However, netstat -rn works on all operating systems, including Linux and Microsoft operating systems.

In your output, look for the line that begins with the word default. The associated IP address is that of your default gateway. Also look at the flags for that entry. Hopefully they indicate U for up and G for gateway. This indicates that you can communicate with your gateway. If the number in the Use field isn’t 0, you’ve actually sent your gateway that number of packets.

Finally, the last line of this output shows the MAC address of the default gateway.

Verifying Your DNS Settings

The resolver configuration file should contain your DNS settings. You can view that file with:

This particular system contains the IP addresses of three DNS servers. It’s a good idea to have the addresses of at least two servers, in case your primary DNS server becomes unavailable.

While you have Internet access, you should know how to query your ISP’s DNS servers and to record the results in a book containing your network settings. This will be invaluable if you ever need to recreate these settings manually. If you don’t keep such a notebook, you can gather those settings from a system that does have working Internet access.

To find out the IP addresses of your DNS servers, use dig. the domain information groper. Here, I’ll ask for the ns. or name server, entries for my ISP:

Your output will be divided into several SECTION s. For now, concentrate on the ANSWER SECTION. which contains the answer to your dig query. My ISP uses four DNS name servers, as seen in my answer. Each name server uses an IN (IPv4) record and a NS (name server) record. However, the answer shows the names of the name servers. You don’t want to use names for name resolution; you want the IP addresses of your name servers.

You’ll find those names mapped to IP addresses in the ADDITIONAL SECTION .

dig is also handy if you ever forget the name or IP address of your ISP’s SMTP or mail server. This time, query for the mx. or mail exchange record. Here, I’ve shown only the ANSWER SECTION for brevity:

My ISP has three SMTP servers. See that number between the MX and the name of the mail server? That’s the priority number. My ISP’s mail servers all have the same priority; however, some ISPs use different priorities. If yours does, choose the mail server with the lowest priority number, as it has the highest priority.

Free Advertising for Small Businesses

The Top Ten List

Free Listings for Establishing Your Presence in the Digital World

It is a popular and widely accepted benchmark that small businesses should spend between five to ten percent of their sales revenue in promoting and advertising their business each year. For their advertising dollars, owners aim at a mix of the highest quality leads and the most leads possible. However, with limited budgets, small business owners are also looking for good opportunities to promote their business for free.

Are you an SMB owner or manager looking for free advertising or an inexpensive way to establish your presence on the Internet? The following list contains the top ten companies (in my opinion) that will provide you with a free business listing in the digital space. These listings will appear on the Internet, whether people are searching on PCs, smartphones, or tablets. All for a favorite price – free!

It is easy to get started, and does not take much time to complete. Each site will take about 10 to 20 minutes to upload your data, if you have all of your personal contact information available (including your business email and business phone number).

In addition to this top ten list, there are four important things to know about free listings:

  1. Accurate Data: If you have a business phone, your business (most likely) already has some sort of data on these sites. You should claim your listing to ensure that your listing (or business profile page) has accurate, up-to-date data.
  2. Your Reputation: Your free listing or business profile page may contain ratings and reviews of your products or services from your customers. You should monitor the ratings and reviews that appear on these sites so that you can engage with your customers. These ratings and reviews might be visible only on these websites and not available on the search engines, such as Google. Again, not all ratings and reviews are visible through search engines, but your potential customers may see them. These sites provide you, as the business owner, an opportunity to respond to both the positive and negative feedback.
  3. Consistency: This list of Top Ten sites will help you ensure the consistency of your company s data across the Internet. Data aggregators and search engines may gather, pass and display erroneous information if customers or consumer users provide incorrect data for your business. By claiming your free listings on these Top Ten sites, you ensure that your data is accurate and consistent on other sites and other digital platforms as well.
  4. Getting More: Some argue that a business listing is not properly defined as an “advertisement,” since it simply contains basic company data. However, at many of these top ten sites, you can add more than just your basic listing for free. For no cost, you can add photos of your business, additional text describing your company, and blog posts. Regardless of whether you call this information a listing or an advertisement, you should get more from these top ten sites by adding as much information as possible about your company.

And finally, search engines such as Google, Yahoo, and Bing have historically aggregated data from these top ten sites, including ratings and reviews. More recently, search engines are allowing SMBs to enter the data directly. Consequently, I recommend that small businesses add their business listing to at least these three top search engines.

I hope that you find this information helpful, and would welcome and appreciate your feedback. In addition, please feel free to use the comments to recommend any additional sites that I may have overlooked.

While we re on the subject of FREE

Blab ‘acts as crystal ball’ for social media

    Story highlights

    • Blab predicts topics before they start trending
    • It analyzes 100 million conversations a day, and 50,000 news sources
    • More companies are seeing the value of engaging with customers in real-time

It’s no secret that corporate branding is big business. But in the age of social media, staying ahead of consumer conversations is an increasing challenge. Enter Randy Browning and his company, Blab. It works on predictive social intelligence — identifying and predicting emerging topics and conversations before they trend on the internet.

The company’s propriety technology, aptly named Blab Predicts, gathers 100 million conversations a day, across six social networks and 50,000 news sources in real time. Seattle, Washington-based Blab then classifies those conversations into topics. Companies pay for the predictive data related to each topic.

CNN spoke with Browning to find out more about Blab and the merits of using predictive technology.

Randy Browning: So let’s say you’re an airline and you’re going into spring break, and you’ve got a lot of business riding on flights into Florida. All of a sudden, there’s a shark attack in Florida. And the news is something that’s going to move from the news world into the blog world and start resonating with your target audience.

Blab is able to tell that airline this is just a news blip it’s going to last 12 hours and it’s going to not go further than that, or this is going to be a big issue and it’s going to be pervasive 72 hours out. So we are really truly a crystal ball, saying here’s how people are going to be dealing with this story that’s hitting the press right now.

    JUST WATCHED

Blood moon blows up social media

    MUST WATCH

Blood moon blows up social media 02:29

CNN: Why do companies need to predict conversations on social media?

RB: There’s been a fundamental shift in the way that marketers need to engage customers and it comes down to this: customers are happy operating in real time. I learn, I’m engaged, I’m excited about living my life in real time. But businesses are scared to death to operate in real time! Because when you’re spending millions of dollars in media, you don’t want to be in a reactive state.

You don’t want to say, “Hey, I’m caught off guard.” What we do for them is we shift time. We say here’s what will be resonating with your target audience up to 72 hours in the future.

CNN: You say that you’re the first company to do this kind of predictive social intelligence. What are the challenges of being an early adopter of new technology?

RB: Every start-up has issues it has to overcome. With Blab, it was my background in advertising. I had a vision but I wasn’t a technologist. So I couldn’t get in my garage and start building this. I didn’t have venture capitalist connections. So it wasn’t about calling up a friend and saying, fund us without the proof.

That was the barrier I had to solve in building Blab, bring the right founding technology team together, the right angel investors together who would believe in a vision.

CNN: What advice do you have for others who ar e starting a business?

RB: My advice for entrepreneurs is if you’re driven by a passion and an industry understanding, do your research around financing and investing. That is key, that’s the success to getting a company off the ground. And keeping a company going.

6 things to know about Biotronik’s TRUECOIN study, home monitoring system

New research released earlier this month showed that Biotronik’s home monitoring system significantly reduces mortality rates in patients who have implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs).

Biotronik, a cardiac technology manufacturer based in Berlin, Germany, has been offering their home monitoring system in the U.S. for more than 17 years. The recent research in the TRUECOIN meta-analysis, published May 11 in the European Heart Journal, showed that Biotronik’s home monitoring system reduced mortality and hospitalizations by 36 percent.

Here are six things to know about the study and its findings:

    • How the system works: The home monitoring system connects patients to their providers by wirelessly transmitting their cardiac data to Biotronik servers. Physicians then have access to the data so they can properly interpret it and detect any problems.
    • The study included more than 2,400 patients from three previous trials on Biotronik’s system (the TRUST, ECOST and IN-TIME studies). The IN-TIME study was the first large-scale, randomized, controlled trial, which demonstrated a significant reduction in mortality in patients who had Biotronik’s home monitoring system.
    • The findings: TRUECOIN, which collected data from 181 centers, revealed that by using the home monitoring system, all-cause mortality and hospitalizations could be reduced by 36 percent. “They were trying to verify that the mortality findings from the other studies were actually viable,” said Rupa Basu, the senior vice president of corporate accounts and strategy at Biotronik.

The system is simple to use. Compared to its competitors, Biotronik’s home monitoring system automatically transmits data to physicians. Other systems require patients to manually send their information, which can cause inconsistencies in the event patients forget or just simply don’t want to. “With our device, all the patients has to do is keep their device chrged, versus our competitors, [where] the patient has to either put the device on top of where te implant is or they have to press a button to trasmit the information,” Basu said.

  • Will the system make money? Biotronik’s home monitoring system is already a leading option in its market, but the company hopes the TRUECOIN results helps it maintain its position. “Our home monitoring system is success already in the market, but this just reinforces that ours significantly reduces all-cause mortality,” Basu said.
  • The system is cost-effective, saves time, reduces the risk of unnecessary hospitalizations and gives physicians more time to monitor patients without having to see each one in back-to-back appointments.

While former FBI Director Robert Mueller’s investigation will take place largely behind closed doors, Congress can be much more open in its work, points out Rep. Adam Schiff, lead Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee.

The White House budget proposal would slash programs for the poor, including Medicaid and food stamps. Its framers say it nudges the able-bodied into jobs; critics call it ‘Robin Hood in reverse.’

The ruling found that two re-drawn congressional districts in the state relied on race rather than political makeup.

So far evidence of such activity hasn’t surfaced. Yet, even if it never does, serious concerns about both the Trump team and Russia are being investigated, and should not be obscured.

Many aspects of the proposal are likely to face opposition from Democrats and several key Republicans.

The new measure was originally intended to apply to the general public, though it will only apply public school students when it is likely signed into law.

Montanans opted for Greg Gianforte by only 6 percentage points in a statewide House election Thursday. Half a year ago, Donald Trump carried the state by 20 points. New worries about health-care policy are one reason for the difference.

The terrorist attack allowed President Trump to divert the focus from Russia. But security experts say Putin’s Russia and ISIS are both illiberal adversaries of the West that must be confronted with an information war.

The law would allow online bullies to be sent to jail for a year, but vague language in the law has led many to raise concerns about the implications of the legislation.

It could be several months until the high court hears arguments in the case but the justices almost always have the final say when a lower court strikes down a federal law or presidential action.

A Republican candidate for Congress in Montana physically assaulted a reporter asking a question about health care May 24, the latest in a string of disturbing incidents, media experts say.

The two fresh faces on the NATO summit stage encapsulate the opposing forces pushing and pulling on alliance countries and on the West more broadly.

Four of the top five fastest-growing cities are located in Texas, according to the US Census Bureau.

    Was this review ?

    Business.com Media Reviews

Upper Management is full of themselves and cliquey. The company that I joined awhile back is not what BDC is today. sales are down, morale is down and overall, things are trending downward, but there is zero recognition of this on the part of management. One of the biggest issues is that HR doesn t feel like a neutral party, so no one feels like they can really say how they feel, which is why people are venting on Glassdoor.

Socal location is amazing, some great coworkers at the junior level

I had a horrific experience at this company. My old boss left a couple of months ago, and that was the final straw. I heard that their top content person, who was also great, left as well. From a career perspective, I can t say it strongly enough — do yourself a favor and work somewhere else.

    Advice to Management

Time to clean house – start with the person you see in the mirror

I relocated to San Diego for this position and am really excited about my new gig. I really like the team that I work with and am excited to take ownership over a major product. It seems like communication is pretty strong within my team, not sure how other teams work though. I love that the company offers a gym membership and keeps our kitchen stocked with snacks. The people here are really nice and have been super welcoming.

There are a lot of meetings, which can take away from time that could be spent on getting things done. It would also be nice to get to work from home sometimes bc my commute can be rough.

    Advice to Management

Like others have said, a 401k match would be awesome and less meetings.

The gym membership is free and there are great snacks. A few really talented individuals (not in management). But are free Sun Chips and Red Vines really worth working late every night and made to feel bad when you still can t get everything done?

I can t say much more than the other 1-star reviews on here. I agree with EVERYTHING they have said, and in some ways they have voiced it better than I could. The atmosphere is unprofessional. Management plays favorites, especially to those employees that they are in romantic relationships with.

They preach culture, but it s not at all welcoming or empowering. You re encouraged to have ideas and help move the company forward, but most good ideas from the trenches are thrown out in favor of short-term wins, management s egos, and maintaining the illusion of success. Why solve a problem when you can lie about it and pretend it doesn t exist? On more than one occasion, I was forced to work on projects that were unethical, manipulating results so the advertiser would think the campaign went differently than it actually did.

You can work hard and keep your head down, as one reviewer put it, but you will get taken advantage of, and there will be no recognition for the effort you ve put in. That s why so many people are quitting and writing these reviews. Management is struggling to keep people, demonstrated by the extremely high turn over.

They will say ANYTHING just to convince employees that the company is moving in a successful direction, and scold you for saying anything other than positive things about the company. It doesn t surprise me at all that another reviewer was contacted about leaving a negative review here. They treat internal employee surveys the same – they only report on the positive comments and don t keep results anonymous when there is negative feedback. I suppose you increase your positive reviews when you scare people into thinking that their comments are not going to be anonymous.

Overall, I felt completely duped. What I was promised in the interview was not at all what was delivered. Save yourself the time and effort, since the interview process isn t quick or painless.

    Advice to Management

-Stop lying to employees and advertisers.
-Hire more people in order to avoid burnout and turnover.
-Pay attention to the super talented worker bees and recognize them for their awesome work.
    -Match 401k contributions.

-Most importantly though, don t just dismiss negative feedback and people quitting as individuals who just couldn t measure up at your cutting-edge, industry-leading company. They quit for other jobs. it s not like you fired them. Stop kidding yourselves.

The health insurance plan was pretty affordable and they offer a flexible spending account.

Business.com has a totally unprofessional work environment. A few months after I left the company, I actually got an email from HR accusing me of leaving them a bad review on here. I didn t write the review, but it s so close to my own experience I could have. I can t believe a professional would take the time to make those accusations, but it s not really that surprising. That s just a small reflection of what the company culture is like. Like another reviewer said, it feels like high school.

    Advice to Management

    – You won t succeed if you don t drink the company Kool-aid.
    – People are told they re encouraged to speak up yet reprimanded if you question anything
    – Incest – it seems like pretty much everyone is sleeping with each other.
    – Unqualified Management
    – Customer Service is of least concern; never able to keep clients because of poor service
    – If you re quiet and work hard, you re pretty much invisible.
    – No real constructive criticism is given

    Advice to Management

Pay attention to the people who the people who are actually doing their work, not the ones that pretend to do it.

Hire qualified managers or provide training so they are qualified.

Take into account CONSTRUCTIVE feedback from the employee surveys and share it with the company; don t just share the positive feedback

32 Business Listing Sites That Will Get You Referral Traffic

Not all online searches and transactions are performed on search engines. Directories and social media websites expand your reach and have some of the hottest leads on the web at an inexpensive cost. Whether free or paid, these marketplaces are worth spending your advertising budget on.

Should You Submit to Online Directories?

Yes! You should submit your business information and website to relevant directories, and I’ve included a list below. This list is a great sources of leads, consumer reviews and referral traffic. Free or paid, it is important you control your business profile because you need to engage and advertise to consumers where they want to be. Once you claim your profile, update any information that is inaccurate. and be sure to provide details about your business that are a selling point and may draw a new customer in. Most importantly, claim ownership now so that you can respond to positive and negative reviews of your business in the future.

    How Many Is Too Many?

There is no set number of directories your business should or shouldn t be in. It s the quality and relevancy of the directories that is important to keep in mind. Links from spammy websites, hacked websites or low quality sites constitute bad neighborhoods that you don’t want to belong to. Linking to your site from these bad neighborhoods on purpose will make you a target for manual penalties from the search engines.

How to Tell Which Directories Are Legit

I have put together a list of 32 directories I recommend, below. But there are many more worth considering. If you re interested in submitting your site to a directory, take a look at the businesses listed and if you would feel comfortable calling on those businesses and they are relevant to your business, then you should feel safe submitting to and being a part of that neighborhood. The quality of the sites you are listed in is important, so stick to the best. The goal is to make sure that the most accurate, up-to-date information about your business gets published where your potential customers are searching.

    Getting Started

On any of these sites, search to see if your business is already listed, then claim control of your existing listing instead of submitting a duplicate. For new submissions, I’ve linked to the deepest page that can help you set up a new business profile quickly. Also if you have a directory that you think should be included, please feel free to mention it in the comments.

Need help submitting? This can be very time consuming, and we can help. You can start by evaluating the accuracy of your listing using our free tool, and claim control quickly and easily by syndicating your information through our network, or we can do the legwork for you.
