How to Become a Nurse Practitioner

A nurse practitioner (NP) is an advanced practice registered nurse who provides health care services similar to those of a physician. Nurse practitioners may choose to specialize in family, pediatric, or geriatric nursing. Common duties include diagnosing and treating illnesses and injuries, prescribing medications, and educating patients. Nurse practitioners may also order diagnostic tests and analyze the results.

The work of a nurse practitioner can be physically and emotionally demanding, since they must spend shifts standing for long periods and making life-and-death decisions. Some of these nurses must be on call or work night and weekend shifts.

In order to become a nurse practitioner, you will need a master’s or doctoral degree in nursing, as well as to be licensed and certified. Nurse practitioners need to have skills in problem solving, decision making, communication, leadership, critical thinking, resourcefulness, and compassion. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. nurse practitioners as of May 2015 make a median salary of $98,190 a year.

Basic Education

Students on a path to becoming a nurse practitioner will need to earn a bachelor’s degree to qualify for necessary graduate study. Completion of a bachelor’s degree program prepares students to meet state requirements for licensure as a registered nurse (RN). Common areas studied in undergraduate nursing programs include pharmacology, anatomy and physiology, pediatric nursing, and community health. In the clinical experience part of the program, students will have the opportunity to practice skills learned in the classroom under the guidance of their instructor.

To be successful you should:

  • Take communications classes. Prospective nurse practitioners may benefit from taking communications classes, as excellent writing and speaking skills are important to concisely explain procedures to patients and their families.
  • Enroll in an accelerated program. This option allows students who already hold a non-nursing bachelor’s degree to complete a program of study more quickly. Consider online nursing courses that you can easily fit into your schedule to help speed up your program even more.

After receiving your bachelor’s degree, you will need to receive a license to be a registered nurse. Every state requires a practicing nurse to first pass the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN). Additional licensing and registration requirements, which typically include background checks and fingerprinting, may be required at the state level. Before candidates can pursue a graduate degree or advanced nursing licensure, an RN license is required.

Advanced Education

Registered nurses with a bachelor’s degree who are interested in becoming nurse practitioners can qualify for the position by earning a master’s or doctoral degree in nursing. Many nurse practitioners specialize in a specific area of medicine such as pediatrics or family medicine during their graduate study. These programs typically take 2-3 years to complete and require students to take courses, seminars, and lectures in addition to completing a clinical residency. Common nursing courses may include healthcare management, pathophysiology, and advanced pharmacology.

Most states require additional licensure to work as an advanced practice nurse. Advanced practice nurses operate in one of four roles: nurse practitioner, nurse anesthetist, nurse midwife, or clinical nurse specialist. Licensing is regulated by individual states, and requirements vary. However, all NPs must first be licensed RNs with a master’s degree in one of the four advanced practice specialties. Some states mandate extra exams and professional experience. Many states require continuing education classes or maintenance of a national certification to renew a license.

The successful completion of a graduate degree program and licensure requirements prepares graduates to sit for certification examinations specific to their careers. The American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) are two organizations that offer national certification commonly recognized by state nursing boards. Certification usually requires passing an examination, and most organizations mandate continuing education to maintain the credentials.

Available specialty examinations nurse practitioners may choose from include acute care, diabetes management, family care, school nursing, mental health, gerontology, and pediatrics. Nurses wishing to specialize in a specific area of practice should obtain the proper materials needed to study for the exam. Individuals are strongly encouraged to take any practice tests available.

    How to Become a Nurse Case Manager

    As more complex medical treatment options emerged in the 1970’s, the concept of case management in healthcare came into existence as a means by which to eliminate gaps in the care provided, as well as needlessly duplicated treatment, all while controlling the cost of quality patient care.

    Most case managers come from the fields of nursing and social work. Because of their clinical experience, nurses are uniquely qualified to bring an understanding of the clinical process of assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation to the process of case management. Advanced practice nurses are particularly well suited for case management roles, as their graduate level clinical degrees better prepare them with the analytical and research-based competencies the job requires. In addition to clinical expertise, case management nurses need excellent communication and problem-solving skills and must know how the health care system works, including regulations, resource availability, and the financing of medical care.

    As identified in the 2010 Role Delineation Study of Nursing Case Management National Survey published by the American Nurses Credentialing Center, some of the major duties of a case management nurse include:

    • Documenting clients’ case management plans and on-going activities
    • Identifying clients’ insurance coverage or other sources of payment for services
    • Identifying and addressing client risk factors and/or obstacles to care
    • Identifying client needs, current services, and available resources, then connecting the client to services and resources to meet established goals
    • Communicating the care preferences of clients, serving as their advocate, and verifying that interventions meet the client’s needs and goals of treatment
    • Screening clients and/or population for healthcare needs
    • Developing a client-focused case management plan
    • Educating the client/family/caregiver about the case management process and evaluating their understanding of the process

    The survey also found that 60 percent of nursing case managers worked in hospitals, while 11 percent were employed by health plans or insurance companies who seek their services as a means by which to make the care process economically efficient. Others work in a range of settings that include rehabilitation and subacute facilities, community-based programs, and home care.

    Nurse case managers may specialize in an area such as rehabilitation, pediatrics, or geriatrics. Typically, a nurse already specializing in a particular area of practice will move into a case management role in which their specialized knowledge is an asset.

    Case Management Certification

    Case Management Administrator Certification (CMAC) through the Center for Case Management is designed specifically for case management nurse administrators. This designation is often pursued by advanced practice nurses who have moved into case management who and are interested in a leadership position. Their graduate-level education also allows APRNs to meet eligibility requirements with fewer years of case management experience. Applicants must meet one of the following eligibility requirements:

    • Hold a masters’ degree or higher and have 12 months of experience in case management administration
    • Hold a bachelor’s degree or higher and have 36 months of experience in case management administration
    • Hold a masters degree or higher and have 36 months of experience working as a case manager
    • Hold a bachelor’s degree or higher and have 60 months of experience as a case manager

    The CMAC exam covers the following:

    • Identifying at-risk populations
    • Assessing the components of clinical systems
    • Developing strategies to manage at-risk populations
    • Leadership
    • Market assessment and strategic planning
    • HR management
    • Evaluating programs through outcomes management

    Case Management Administrator Certification is available at a cost of $375. Recertification takes place every five years and requires credential holders to either retake the certification exam, or qualify for recertification through continuing education.

    The American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) offers a Nursing Case Management Certification that awards the credential RN-BC. The eligibility requirements to take the exam are:

    • An active, current RN license in the U.S. or the equivalent in another country
    • The equivalent of two years full-time experience as an RN
    • At least 2,000 clinical practice hours in case management nursing during the three years immediately prior to applying
    • Thirty continuing education hours of case management nursing during the three years immediately prior to applying

    The computer-based exam is taken through Prometric Testing Centers and must be taken within 90 days of acceptance of application. Recertification takes place every five years and requires professional development.

    Nurses in case management also have the option of becoming Certified Case Managers (CCM) through the Commission for Case Manager Certification (CCMC). In addition to having an active, current RN license and meeting the requirements of the CCMC Code of Professional Conduct, CCM candidates need to meet one of the following requirements:

    • 12 months of full-time experience in case management under the supervision of a CCM
    • 24 months of full-time case management experience without CCM supervision
    • 12 months of full-time experience as a supervisor of individual providers of case management services

    The three-hour, 180 question CCM exam is offered three times a year and covers:

    • Concepts of case management
    • Healthcare management and delivery
    • Healthcare reimbursement
    • Principles of practice
    • Psychosocial aspects
    • Rehabilitation

    Renewal of the CCM credential takes place every five years and requires continuing education.

    Case management nurses are also eligible to apply for a fellowship with The American Academy Of Case Management. Fellowship requires applicants to complete the academy s continuing education program and pass an exam. Applicants who successfully complete the program receive the designation, Fellow in the American Academy of Case Management (FAACM).

    Renewal of the designation takes place every four years and requires both continuing education and a minimum number of practice hours.

    Other available case management certifications include:

    • Certified Disability Management Specialist (CDMS) through the Certification of Disability Management Specialists Commission
    • Accredited Case Manager (ACM) certification from the American Case Management Association (ACMA) (designed specifically for hospital case managers)

    Case Management Education

    Bachelor’s level education is seen as the minimal requirement for nurse case management positions, while graduate level preparation is increasingly being viewed as the standard. This has made advanced practice registered nurses uniquely well suited to these positions since the competencies developed at the graduate level better prepare nurses for the complexity of the nurse case management role.

    Individuals interested in case management, but who do not already hold an advanced clinical degree as advanced practice registered nurses, do have options at the graduate level. The Master of Science in Nursing Case Management or an MSN with a case management track would be appropriate in these instances. Nurse case management administrators very often hold MBAs or MSN in Nursing Administration degrees as well. These degrees prepare nurses to coordinate client care, act as client advocates, and provide clinical management for groups of clients. Post-master s certificates in case management are also available.

    Although RNs can get into case management without additional education, more opportunities are available to nurses who gain additional competencies in the role and responsibilities of the nurse case manager. RNs can also obtain a non-degree post-baccalaureate certificate in case management. Some programs are specifically for nurses, while other programs are open to anyone with the background necessary to become a case manager, including social workers. Post-baccalaureate certificate programs provide basic academic preparation in areas such as case management concepts and process, coordination of services, financial considerations in case management, and disease management.

    Case Management Associations

    Associations for case managers include the National Association of Case Management and the Case Management Society of America. The Academy of Certified Case Managers publishes a bimonthly journal and offers CEU home study programs to maintain CCM and CDMS certifications.

    The American Case Management Association is for case managers who work in hospitals and health systems. The National Association of Professional Geriatric Care Managers is made up of case managers working with families to care for aging relatives.

    Who is it for?

    Requirements and how to apply

    Applicants should hold at least a lower second-class honours degree or the equivalent from an international institution.

    Applicants should be registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council or a similar professional/statutory body with two years’ relevant clinical experience and currently working in a healthcare setting.

    Students with relevant work experience, combined with a demonstrable ability to study at degree level, will also be considered.

    Applicants must be in permanent employment in appropriate clinical setting and must have full support from their employer to undertake programme at City, University of London.

    Applicants must have access to a designated practice supervisor in practice who is a doctor (registrar and above) or ANP.

    For students whose first language is not English, one of the following is also required:

    • A first degree from a UK university or an overseas institution recognised by City as providing adequate evidence of proficiency in the English language, for example, from institutions in Australia, Canada or the USA
    • IELTS: 7.0
    • Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic: 72.

    Due to changes in the UKVI’s list of SELTs we are no longer able to accept TOEFL as evidence of English language for students who require a CAS as of April 2014.

    The Clinical Skills Centre at City offers students excellent clinical training facilities. You will have access to a simulated six-bedded high dependency unit (HDU) with realistic equipment including piped oxygen, call bells, medicines and emergency equipment. In addition, medium fidelity simulators and laboratories, including a biology laboratory, will allow you to rehearse skills in preparation for practice in a range of placements, including clinics and people’s homes.

    You will learn from a variety of student-centred and patient-focused teaching, learning and assessment strategies aimed at developing and assessing different knowledge, skills and attitudes. Learning strategies involve shared learning across Adult and Child routes with further consideration and specialisation for intensive branch specific tutorials.

    You will have the opportunity to work within your practice or other health care settings, and learn from lecturers who are experienced advanced nurse practitioners engaged in active clinical practice. There will be extensive use of City’s Virtual Learning Platform – Moodle – for a more interactive learning experience.

    Assessment strategies include coursework, examinations, reports, seminar presentations, portfolios, skills schedules and objective structured clinical examinations (OSCEs). You may be expected to take part in formative assessment activities during the modules in addition to the summative assessments for each module.

    Modules

    The course can only be undertaken on a part-time basis due to the clinical stream required. Students will usually attend lectures one day a week and consolidate their practice for the rest of the week.

    In addition students will need to undertake a minimum of 500 supervised supernumerary clinical hours for the duration of the course.

    • Introduction to research methods and applied data analysis (30 credits)
    • Critical approaches to advanced practice (15 credits)
    • Advanced Physical Assessment, critical thinking and diagnostic reasoning across the lifespan (30 credits)

    • Pathophysiological principles for advanced practice (15 credits)

    DUTIES OF SCRUB NURSE – Nursing Crib #scrub #nurse #education

    Before an operation

    • Ensures that the circulating nurse has checked the equipment
    • Ensures that the theater has been cleaned before the trolley is set
    • Prepares the instruments and equipment needed in the operation
    • Uses sterile technique for scrubbing, gowning and gloving
    • Receives sterile equipment via circulating nurse using sterile technique
    • Performs initial sponges, instruments and needle count, checks with circulating nurse

    When surgeon arrives after scrubbing

    • Perform assisted gowning and gloving to the surgeon and assistant surgeon as soon as they enter the operation suite
    • Assemble the drapes according to use. Start with towel, towel clips, draw sheet and then lap sheet. Then, assist in draping the patient aseptically according to routine procedure
    • Place blade on the knife handle using needle holder, assemble suction tip and suction tube
    • Bring mayo stand and back table near the draped patient after draping is completed
    • Secure suction tube and cautery cord with towel clips or allis
    • Prepares sutures and needles according to use
    • Maintain sterility throughout the procedure
    • Awareness of the patient’s safety
    • Adhere to the policy regarding sponge/ instruments count/ surgical needles
    • Arrange the instrument on the mayo table and on the back table

    Before the Incision Begins

    • Provide 2 sponges on the operative site prior to incision
    • Passes the 1st knife for the skin to the surgeon with blade facing downward and a hemostat to the assistant surgeon
    • Hand the retractor to the assistant surgeon
    • Watch the field/ procedure and anticipate the surgeon’s needs
    • Pass the instrument in a decisive and positive manner
    • Watch out for hand signals to ask for instruments and keep instrument as clean as possible by wiping instrument with moist sponge
    • Always remove charred tissue from the cautery tip
    • Notify circulating nurse if you need additional instruments as clear as possible
    • Keep 2 sponges on the field
    • Save and care for tissue specimen according to the hospital policy
    • Remove excess instrument from the sterile field
    • Adhere and maintain sterile technique and watch for any breaks
    • Undertake count of sponges and instruments with circulating nurse
    • Informs the surgeon of count result
    • Clears away instrument and equipment
    • After operation: helps to apply dressing
    • Removes and siposes of drapes
    • De-gown
    • Prepares the patient for recovery room
    • Completes documentation
    • Hand patient over to recover room

Rape cases, homicides, etc. I honestly can say I know what to expect and know what should be done prior to being transported to the morgue. It was most informative. There is currently no nationally recognized certification or training for baby nurses. Because of this fact I have taken the postpartum doula training as well as a lactation course. Additionally, I am committed to staying current with all the latest evidence-based infant care issues.

    I am available to provide full charge care for your infant as needed, however, parental involvement is encouraged and should never be limited by a baby nurse. I am available to answer questions, teach swaddling techniques, assist with the first bath, and encourage bonding between parents and their infant when desired. Below is a detailed list of typical baby nurse duties.

    I have heard many stories of baby nurses who claim they can get any baby to sleep through the night in as little as 1-6 weeks of age. The problem I have with such claims is that these methods always include some variation of the cry-it-out (CIO) method. While some crying is normal and to be expected, I do not believe in closing the door and letting a newborn CIO for more than 5 minutes, and even that is rare.

    I would be happy to discuss my reasons behind my methods in detail with prospective clients. The CIO method typically DOES work, but I feel it is damaging to the newborn and therefore, simply will not do it. That being said, CIO may be appropriate for older babies who are ready to sleep through the night. My basic rule of thumb is to follow the baby s cues and avoid negative associations from the start. I discuss with my clients what I look for to indicate readiness for sleep training. When baby is ready and I ve been given the ok by the client I then begin the process of sleep training which often includes a more gentle version of the CIO method.

    I begin my shift by checking in with the parents and getting any pertinent information regarding the day. I review the baby s schedule and prepare formula for my shift. I typically like to gather everything I will need for a shift to limit the amount of movement in the home throughout the night. If bathing the infant is required I typically do that early on in the evening as to promote the association of the evening bath and bottle with going to sleep. Throughout the night I keep track of feeding cycles while keeping the environment in the nursery conducive to sleep. At the end of my shift I prepare bottles for the following day (if needed) and make sure things are cleaned up from the night including diapers put away, bottles washed and any baby laundry washed, folded and put away.

    Once breastfeeding is established I typically assist mom by bringing the baby to her for feedings, keeping track of when baby eats and for how long, and helping to tweak the feeding schedule in order to work best for the whole family. In the beginning, while breastfeeding is still being established I support mom through observation and making suggestions when needed. I encourage and try to support her through any issues of guilt, fear or self doubt she may have regarding her ability to nourish her newborn. I always bring a very easy to read breastfeeding troubleshooting guide with me on jobs. This allows me to be able to quickly and easily look up info to assist with the most common issues. I am also qualified to observe typical breastfeeding problems and assist with solutions. When needed, I refer to a lactation consultant for further assistance.

    It is best to book a baby nurse several months in advance. Once contracted, I will be in contact with you throughout the remainder of your pregnancy. Although it is ideal to book early, I am sometimes able to accommodate last minute requests so please do not allow timing to prevent you from contacting me. The specialty exams will include 170 multiple-choice questions, and individuals will be allotted three hours to complete the test. The test costs and additional $250.

    The job outlook for ultrasound technicians is excellent, with a projected job growth of 44% over the next decade. Because ultrasound is a relatively safe imaging technology, it will be used as a substitute for more invasive/dangerous procedures as the technology advances.

    Job growth is also expected in private physician’s offices and medical/diagnostic laboratories, as the relatively low costs of ultrasound imaging technology allows more procedures to be performed outside of hospitals. As the baby-boomer population continues to advance in age over the next decade, more ultrasound technicians will be required in the field.

    If you want to verify an NP’s credentials, check with the American College of Nurse Practitioners (ACNP). It’s also a good idea to ask NPs about their specific qualifications, education, and training, just as you would interview any doctor for your child.

    Also be sure to check with your health insurance provider to be sure that services provided by NPs are covered through your policy.

    How Can I Find an NP?

    You can find pediatric NPs through the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners (NAPNAP) and through local hospitals or nursing schools. Also, many doctors share office space with NPs to provide all types of primary care. Other doctors work with NPs to offer them training in different types of health care.     As a registered nurse (RN), if you haven’t been asked to be a preceptor, chances are you soon will be. More than half of new graduate nurses start their careers in a hospital setting, and more preceptors are needed to bridge the gap between nursing school and the hospital.

    Nurse preceptors are vital to the success of health care organizations, and studies have linked effective preceptors with reduced nurse turnover and increased patient safety. As a result, health care organizations are increasingly requiring RNs to serve as preceptors for new nursing staff by tying the role to career advancement and raises.

    Nurse preceptor definition

    A preceptor by definition is a teacher or instructor, but the role of a nurse preceptor goes beyond that traditional definition. The nurse preceptor serves the dual role of practitioner and educator.

    The responsibility of precepting falls in between teaching and mentoring. “Like mentoring, it is a one-to-one relationship. Even if a person precepts more than one student, each relationship tends to be handled in a one-to-one manner,” says Barbara Stevens Barnum, author of “The Role of the Preceptor: A Guide for Nurse Educators.” In addition to being a teacher and a mentor, a preceptor also serves as a role model, leader, influencer, evaluator, socialization agent and protector to the apprentice nurse.

    The preceptor is instrumental for a student nurse to successfully link nursing theory to application in a clinical setting, according to researchers at the University of Calgary. The preceptor and student nurse work together as one unit, with the nurse carefully observing the preceptor in action and performing tasks under the preceptor’s watchful eye.

    Nurse preceptor characteristics

    Nurses who are asked to be preceptors are typically experienced RNs who are enthusiastic about the nursing profession and have a desire to teach. The preceptor should have a BSN degree at minimum, and preferably a master’s or higher degree in nursing .

    Good candidates for preceptors are unit-based nurse managers, nursing department heads, nursing education department personnel and advanced practice nurses, according to the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN).

    However, not all nurses have the ability or the desire to be preceptors. While skill, knowledge and experience are important, the best preceptors are effective communicators who know how to help student nurses transfer knowledge into bedside application.

    There are no federal regulations stating that individuals are required to have a high school diploma prior to attending nurse aide classes but some states such as Florida require a high school diploma or its equivalent prior to testing if you are under 18 years old and have not attended a training program. A program coordinator at the school or nursing facility which is offering CNA training classes may tell you if a high school diploma or equivalent (GED) is required in order to enroll in the nurse aide program. Some facilities do not require a diploma as long as you have completed a 10th grade high school education. In the state of Texas a high school diploma or a GED is not necessary in order to attend and complete a nursing assistant program.

    There is a wide disparity between CNA training requirements among the states. The difference lies in the mandatory number of total training hours necessary to complete state-approved CNA classes .

    Your Diabetes Care Team

    Your health care team helps you manage your diabetes and maintain your good health. According to the American Diabetes Association, your diabetes care team should include:

    You: You are the most important member of your diabetes care team! Only you know how you feel. Your diabetes care team will depend on you to talk to them honestly and supply information about your body.

    Monitoring your blood sugar tells your doctors whether your current treatment is controlling your diabetes well. By checking your blood sugar levels. you can also prevent or reduce the episodes of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar ) you have.

    Primary doctor: Your primary care doctor is who you see for general checkups and when you get sick. This person is usually an internist or family medicine doctor who has experience treating people with diabetes, too.

    Because your primary care doctor is your main source of care, he or she will most likely head up your diabetes care team.

    Endocrinologist: An endocrinologist is a doctor who has special training and experience in treating people with diabetes. You should see yours regularly.

    Dietitian: A registered dietitian (RD) is trained in the field of nutrition. Food is a key part of your diabetes treatment. so yours will help you figure out your food needs based on your weight. lifestyle, medication. and other health goals (like lowering blood fat levels or blood pressure ).

    Nurse educator: A diabetes educator or diabetes nurse practitioner is a registered nurse (RN) with special training and background in caring for and teaching people with diabetes. Nurse educators often help you with the day-to-day aspects of living with diabetes.

    Eye doctor: Either an ophthalmologist (a doctor who can treat eye problems both medically and surgically) or an optometrist (someone who is trained to examine the eye for certain problems, such as how well the eye focuses; optometrists are not medical doctors) should check your eyes at least once a year. Diabetes can affect the blood vessels in the eyes. which can lead to losing your sight.

    Podiatrist: For anyone with diabetes, which can cause nerve damage in the extremities, foot care is important. A podiatrist is trained to treat feet and problems of the lower legs. These doctors have a Doctor of Podiatric Medicine (DPM) degree from a college of podiatry. They have also done a residency (hospital training) in podiatry.

    Dentist: People with diabetes are at somewhat greater, and earlier, risk of gum disease. The excess blood sugar in your mouth makes it a nice home for bacteria, which can lead to infection. You should see your dentist every 6 months. Be sure to tell your dentist that you have diabetes.

    Exercise trainer: No matter what kind of diabetes you have, exercise should play a major role in managing it. The best person to plan your fitness program. along with your doctor, is someone trained in the scientific basis of exercise and in safe conditioning methods.

    How Often Should I See My Doctor?

    People with diabetes who use insulin shots usually see their doctor at least every 3 to 4 months. People who take pills or who are managing their diabetes through diet alone should have an appointment at least every 4 to 6 months.

    You may need to go more often if your blood sugar isn’t controlled or if your complications are getting worse.

    What Does My Doctor Need to Know?

    Generally, your doctor wants to understand how well your diabetes is controlled and whether diabetic complications are starting or getting worse. Therefore, at each visit, give your doctor your home blood sugar monitoring record and tell him about any symptoms of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar ) or hyperglycemia (high blood sugar).

    Also let your doctor know about any changes in your diet, exercise, or medicines and any new illnesses you may have gotten. Tell your doctor if you’ve had symptoms of eye, nerve, kidney. or cardiovascular problems such as:

    • Blurred vision
    • Numbness or tingling in your feet
    • Persistent hand, feet, face, or leg swelling
    • Cramping or pain in the legs
    • Chest pain
    • Shortness of breath
    • Numbness or weakness on one side of your body
    • Unusual weight gain

    Overview

    Florence Nightingale, the pioneer of modern nursing, lived more than a century ago, but her legacy lives on in hospitals, clinics and schools. Nightingale’s concern for patients stretched beyond administering medication to caring for the whole person – physical as well as emotional, intellectual and spiritual. And she backed up her nursing philosophies with research. Today, nursing research is just one of the exciting changes in the field, says Kathy McCauley, associate dean of academic programs at the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Nursing. Increasingly, evidence-based science is confirming the contributions nurses make to patient care.

    So, who are the people making these contributions? A registered nurse is the professional you’ll likely have the most contact with during a hospital stay. They’re responsible for monitoring a patient’s condition, performing medical procedures and administering medicine. They are also responsible for charting a patient’s progress. These professionals work with a range of patients, from those who are healthy (and are proactively trying to stay that way), to those who are pregnant and bringing new life, to those who are nearing the end of life and hoping for a peaceful death. “Nurses have a very holistic view of health and well-being, and I really appreciated that perspective,” Erin Whitehouse, an RN and Ph.D. student at Johns Hopkins School of Nursing, writes in an email. “[They] look at an entire person and their situation, not just what medical concern they have.”

    Many nurses also specialize and work with patients who have a certain health condition like cancer or diabetes. They can also specialize by body part. For instance, there are dermatology nurses and cardiovascular nurses, among others. RNs can also specialize by people group (like newborn babies) or by environment (like a school or hospital emergency room).

    Registered nurses will be in high demand in the next decade. The Bureau of Labor Statistics expects the profession to grow 16 percent by 2024, opening up 439,300 new jobs.

    How do i become a nurse in Australia

    Australia recognises nursing education and registration from a small number of countries and colleges.
    For these nurses, registration can be a process based on verification of documents for:

    Nurses who were educated in countries not recognised by Australian authorities will be required to undertake accredited Competency assessment courses in Australia.

    These courses must be conducted in Australian hospitals, and will vary in duration from 8 weeks to 3 years.

    These courses are usually conducted by universities; however there are colleges who are accredited by state nursing boards who also conduct accredited courses.

    In order to understand which course will be required, we will submit your application for registration to the appropriate State Nurse’s Board, and if successful enrol you in the appropriate competency assessment course.

    The entire process can take from 3 months to 18 months.

    If you decide to use our services and we accept you into the program, you would normally be registered to work as a nurse in Australia within 6 months.

    This of course will depend on your qualifications and success in the Competency Assessment course.

    You cannot work in Australia as a nurse without:

    • Registration with a State Nursing Board
    • An employer who will sponsor you for 4 years

    Permanent residence can be applied for after 2 years on a working visa.

    In general, students learn how to order, perform and interpret diagnostic tests, take comprehensive patient histories and develop and execute treatment plans. An MSN program takes 1-2 years to complete and prepares graduates to sit for licensing boards in their particular states, as well as national board certification through either the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners or the American Nurses Credentialing Center.     Master’s Degree in Nursing

    All aspiring nurse practitioners must first complete a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing, or BSN, before enrolling in a master’s degree program. Some students may elect to first complete an associate’s degree or certificate program in nursing and gain practical experience before going on to complete a BSN.

    In addition to an undergraduate degree, all those applying to a nurse practitioner program must be registered, licensed nurses. Typically, they must also prove that they have worked at least two years as a registered nurse before applying to a nurse practitioner program.

    Courses included in a nurse practitioner master’s degree program include both traditional classroom lectures and mandatory clinical experience. Some of these courses include:

    Popular Career Options

    Career opportunities for registered nurses, including nurse practitioners, are expected to increase by 16% in the 2014-2024 decade, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) (www.bls.gov ). This is because nurse practitioners can perform many of the same procedures as physicians at a fraction of the cost, making them attractive alternatives in rural communities. The BLS reported that the median salary for nurse practitioners was $98,190 in May 2015.

Like nursing diploma programs, these degree programs offer classroom education combined with clinical experience. Coursework may include nursing ethics, health assessments and patient management. Students hoping to work as pediatric nurses may be able to enroll in pediatric-related electives or focus on pediatric care during their clinical education.

    Licensing Requirements

    All working nurses must be licensed and registered. Aspiring pediatric nurses must become registered nurses by successfully passing the NCLEX-RN exam. This exam proves an understanding of fundamental skills and principles required for providing quality care in the workplace. Some states have additional requirements for licensure, so prospective candidates may consider consulting their respective state board.

    Master of Science in Nursing

    While registered nurses may be able to focus on pediatric care in their work, earning a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) allows students to focus on a specialty area.     An MSN program with a focus on pediatric care may be completed in 2-3 years. Some programs require the completion of a research project in addition to their classroom education and clinical care experience. Courses introduce advanced concepts in nursing practice, addressing topics such as diagnostic reasoning, clinical pharmacology and acute childcare.

    Career Information

    Pediatric nurses work closely with pediatricians to administer medication and provide routine medical care to children and infants. Some typical duties include inserting catheters, taking a patient’s blood pressure and taking blood samples. Pediatric nurses also assist families with the psychological impact of having a child diagnosed with a disease or illness.

    Job Outlook and Salary Statistics

    According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), a 16% increase in the employment of registered nurses was expected for the 2014-2024 period. This growth is much faster than the national average for all occupations. The BLS also reported that the average annual salary for registered nurses was $71,000 as of 2015.

    Although only an associate’s degree is required for licensure and employment, pediatric nurses will find more opportunities if they pursue higher levels of education. Only in a master’s nursing program can a professional specialize in pediatric nursing, though courses in pediatrics are available in associate’s and bachelor’s degrees. Every state requires all nurses to be licensed and registered in order to work, but some states may have specific licensure requirements.
