    Mathematics

    The math department at Prairie State College offers a variety of math courses ranging from basic mathematics to differential equations and linear algebra. With 8 full-time faculty and nearly 30 part-time faculty, the math department staffs more than 60 classes each semester.     Class information will vary from section to section. For information regarding a specific section, see the individual classroom instructor. Some general information pertaining to certain sections is posted below:

    • Math 085 – Computational Skills II – 4 Credit Hours
    • Math 090 – Elementary Algebra – 4 Credit Hours, 5 Lecture Hours
    • Math 095 – Intermediate Algebra – 4 Credit Hours
    • Math 151 – College Algebra – 4 Credit Hours

    Placement/Proficiency

    The Math department does not administer proficiency tests, such as a final exam, for college credit. Students wishing to receive credit for certain classes via a test may take one of the national tests (AP or CLEP). For more information, please visit Testing Services.

    Students unhappy with their Math placement are encouraged to re-take the placement test, which has a built in review module to help students prepare to take the test again.

    If a student wishes to challenge their placement test, they must make an appointment with the chair or coordinator and present evidence of mastery of the material, such as a transcript. In most cases they will be required to pass a final exam in order to be moved up. Note that this changes only the student’s placement, and does not offer the student credit for the lower class. Students will only be allowed to move up one course level in this manner. Additionally, students will not be allowed to challenge their placement via a final exam if they have already completed the class but did not receive a passing grade.

    CSULB Nursing Accelerated Program Satellite Campus

    Miller Children s partnered with California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) to develop an accelerated nursing program and establish a satellite campus at Miller Children s Hospital for clinical courses led by faculty from both the university and the hospital. This unique accelerated program at CSULB enables nursing students to complete the nursing component of an RN/bachelor of science in nursing (BSN) degree in just two years instead of the standard three.

    CSULB nursing students train with human patient simulators that provide an opportunity for students to learn real-time patient care in a non-threatening environment of a simulation lab. The Human Simulator Laboratory is a nine-bed simulator hospital room with an adult, pediatric, and neonatal intensive care unit. The simulator dummies blink, speak, breathe, have a heart beat and mirror human responses to various medical procedures.

    This accelerated RN/BSN program provides for an additional 108 graduating RNs annually. As part of the agreement, Miller Children s Hospital offers to pay the expenses for tuition and books in return for each RN working at Miller Children s Hospital for two years.

    If the person with Alzheimer’s or dementia is a Medicare beneficiary. Medicare will pay for some, but not all, care costs.

    About Medicare

    Medicare is a federal health insurance program generally for people age 65 or older who are receiving Social Security retirement benefits or who are younger than 65 and received Social Security disability benefits for at least 24 months. Regardless of whether receiving retirement and/or disability benefits or not, everyone should apply for Medicare three months prior to his or her 65th birthday to avoid future penalties.

    • Medicare covers inpatient hospital care and some of the doctors’ fees and other medical items for people with Alzheimer’s or dementia who are age 65 or older. Medicare Part D also covers many prescription drugs.
    • Medicare will pay for up to 100 days of skilled nursing home care under limited circumstances. However, custodial long-term nursing home care is not covered.
    • Medicare will pay for hospice care delivered in the home, a nursing facility or an inpatient hospice facility for people with dementia who are determined by a doctor to be near the end of life.

    Reminder: Medicare covers an Annual Wellness Visit and Health Risk Assessment. Medicare pays for an Annual Wellness Visit once every 12 months. Prior to or during an annual wellness visit appointment, a Medicare beneficiary (or caregiver) can be asked by his or her doctor or health professional to complete a Health Risk Assessment (HRA).     Medicare covers cognitive assessment and care planning sessions

    As of January 1, 2017, for the first time people living with Alzheimer’s and their caregivers have access to cognitive assessment and person-centered care planning services under Medicare.

    What is care planning?
    Care planning is a process that helps people with a diagnosis of cognitive impairment, Alzheimer’s disease or other dementia and their caregivers by providing information about medical and non-medical treatments, support services and clinical trials available in the community. Because dementia can complicate the management of other chronic health conditions, care planning is important to coordinating a person’s overall care. Proper care planning can result in fewer hospitalizations and emergency room visits, and better medication management helping improve outcomes and maintain quality of life.

    Does Medicare cover care planning?
    Medicare now covers assessment and care planning by medical professionals, such as physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners and clinical nurse specialists for individuals with cognitive impairment and their families.

    What will the assessment and care planning address?
    Person-centered assessment and planning covered by Medicare includes the clinical, functional, care and support-related elements listed below:

    • Evaluating cognition and function.
    • Assessing symptoms.
    • Reviewing and reconciling medication.
    • Evaluating safety (including driving ability).
    • Identifying caregivers and caregiver needs.
    • Identifying and assessing care directives (e.g. living will, medical power of attorney, healthcare proxy, etc.)
    • Planning for palliative care needs.
    • Referring to community services for both individual and caregiver.

    Medigap

    Medicare coverage can be supplemented with Medigap, a private insurance policy that covers copayments and deductibles required by Medicare. The more expensive Medigap policies may cover additional items.

    Medicare managed care

    Medicare Advantage (also called Part C) allows you to choose Medicare “managed care” in lieu of traditional Medicare, such as:

    • Medicare health maintenance organization (HMO)
    • Preferred provider organization (PPO)
    • Point of service (POS) plan

    Medicare Advantage plans are offered by private companies approved by Medicare. These Medicare plans may provide services (such as dental and vision) not covered by traditional Medicare and usually have limits on which hospitals, doctors and other health care providers you can use.

    Read each plan carefully. Learn about the many Medicare options and whether they are right for the person with dementia. You can also contact your State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) for free one-on-one help and publications.

    Special Needs Plans (SNP) for Alzheimer’s disease

    There are Medicare Special Needs Plans (SNPs) available for individuals with dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease. SNPs are Medicare Advantage plans that specialize in care and coverage for beneficiaries with dementia. Only Medicare beneficiaries with dementia can enroll in these plans. As an ACCP, you ll get a unique opportunity to care for those in need, advance your clinical skills and receive academic training in a fast paced hospital environment.     Types of Nursing Degrees

    Just as there are many different types of nurses. there are also many different types of nursing degrees. If you want to become a nurse, you need to determine which nursing degree is required for the nurse career you want. Learn more about the types of nursing degrees available and where to obtain the degree you need for your future nursing career.

    Taken in a large group, nurses can best be categorized according to their industry licensure and any further specialized credentials.

    These categories often denote a particular degree level attained, type of work environment, and even salary range.

    Associate s Degree in Nursing (ADN)

    An associate s degree in nursing is a two-year degree that is obtained from a community college or vocational school. An associate s degree is the minimum requirement to become a registered nurse; however, be advised that many employers are requiring a bachelor s degree for many RN nursing roles.

    Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)

    A bachelor of science in nursing (BSN) is required for many, but not all, nursing careers. A BSN, like most bachelor s degrees, is typically a four-year degree from a university or college. Like most other nursing degrees, a bachelor of science in nursing combines classroom learning with hands-on training called clinicals which allow students to obtain first-hand experience working with patients in a clinical setting.

    A BSN should be obtained from an accredited nursing program.

    Master s of Science in Nursing (MSN) Degree

    You must have a bachelor s degree in nursing or related field in order to obtain your MSN unless you opt for one of the combined bachelor s/master s programs. A master s degree in nursing is required to become an advanced practice nurse (APN or APRN).

    Advanced practice nurses have more clinical authority and autonomy, and typically earn more than regular registered nurses. Some master s nursing programs may have a special focus or track for certain medical specialties or types of nursing, such as a focus on forensic nursing or a clinical nurse specialist track.

    A specialized master s degree is also required to become a mid-level provider, such as a nurse practitioner (NP) or certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA). Master s degrees are typically one to two years of additional coursework that you can obtain while employed as a nurse. Sometimes your employer will help pay for your master s degree in nursing if you commit to working for a number of years into the future. An MSN must also be completed from an accredited nursing program.

    Doctorate Degrees in Nursing

    The highest degree one can earn in nursing is a doctorate level degree. You must first have a bachelor s and then a master s degree before completing the doctorate degree in nursing and becoming what some refer to as Doctor Nurse.

    There are two types of doctorates in nursing: a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) which focuses on the clinical aspects of nursing and a Doctor of Nursing Science (DNSc, also a DSN or DNS).

    The ATI TEAS Nursing Exam

    WGU is now requiring individuals who wish to be considered for admission into the B.S. Nursing (Prelicensure) Pre-Nursing Curriculum program to take and successfully pass the ATI TEAS Exam.

    Note: You will need to pass the exam with a minimum total score of 60% and a reading subtest score of at least 60%.

    The TEAS exam is a third-party, national nursing exam designed to assess whether or not you are academically prepared for learning nursing-related content. These skills are deemed important for your ultimate success in the prelicensure program.

    The exam contains 170 questions to be completed in approximately three and a half hours. The exam covers several academic subject areas including reading, mathematics, science, English, and language usage.

    Registration and Fees

    Information about test dates, locations, fees, and study materials can be found on the ATI Website .

    To register for the TEAS exams, visit the ATI Registration Website. You will be given the option to select a TEAS testing location either at a local university or at a PSI testing center. (Note: Not all local universities will offer testing to outside applicants.)

    At a PSI testing center, the cost of the exam is $115 and includes the fee for sending the score transcript to WGU.

    Fees at other sites will vary and will not include the cost of sending the score transcript. If you complete the exam at another site, you will be required to purchase your score transcript from the ATI Transcript Request website.

    Note: The fees associated with taking the TEAS assessment are your responsibility and are not covered by your WGU admissions application fee.

    Passing the Exam

    Passing the TEAS Exam does not grant or guarantee admission into the WGU Prelicensure program.

    Students are strongly encouraged to attend a nursing information meeting, held each month in the School of Nursing. They provide critical information about the program.     HOW CAN A STUDENT DETERMINE WHAT IS AN APPROPRIATE EQUIVALENT COURSE TO COMPLETE AT ANOTHER INSTITUTION?

    CAN COURSES BE EVALUATED IF THEY DO NOT TRANSFER AS EQUIVALENT PREREQUISITE COURSES?

    All nursing prerequisite courses completed at other institutions must transfer as the equivalent prerequisite course. Course equivalency approvals must be approved by departments with final approval by the School of Nursing prior to applying to the nursing program. Documentation of this approval must be submitted with your nursing application.

    DO PREREQUISITE COURSES EXPIRE AFTER A CERTAIN PERIOD OF TIME?

    Yes. BIO 135 (Microbiology), BIO 167 (A P I), and BIO 168 (A P II) must be completed within seven years of the deadline date of your nursing application. For example, if you completed a course in fall of 2007, it would expire at the end of December 2014.

    My first degree is still in progress. Am I eligible to apply?

    Yes, as long as your degree is completed prior to program start.

    How do students apply for this program?

    Application for the ASD program requires a student to submit two separate applications: one to UM-Flint and one to the School of Nursing. The nursing application includes the application form, two reference forms, and an essay question.

    Is the application online?

    The nursing application is available on our website to download as a Word file. Students can fill the application out in Word, however it must be printed and submitted as a hard copy.

    DOES UM-FLINT’S ASD PROGRAM HAVE A WAIT LIST?

    No. UM-Flint does not have a wait list. The ASD program is a competitive admission based on prerequisite GPA, last 30 credit GPA, references, and an essay.

    HOW WILL I BE NOTIFIED IF I AM ACCEPTED TO THE PROGRAM? IF I AM NOT ADMITTED, CAN I APPLY AGAIN?

    All students will receive a letter via email or U.S. mail. Students may reapply if they are not admitted.

    Can a student work while in the program?

    We strongly recommend that a student does not work while completing the accelerated program. The program requires a tremendous amount of time and effort with very little flexibility. If a student does work, we suggest part-time employment with an employer who can accommodate a flexible schedule, as the student’s course schedule will change each semester. Students typically spend a minimum of 40 hours per week in class, clinical, and study time.

    Is there a part-time option?

    Unfortunately, there is not currently a part-time option in the accelerated program. Students have the option to complete the traditional program part time.

    Where do students complete clinical, and do they get to choose where they are placed?

    The majority of clinical placements are in Genesee county at three major hospitals – Hurley Medical Center, Genesys Regional Medical Center, and McLaren Regional Medical Center-Flint. However, there are certain semesters where students are placed outside of Genesee County in the Lansing, Detroit, or Saginaw areas. Each semester, students are given the opportunity to rank their clinical placement preferences, which are then assigned by the School of Nursing.

    WILL I BE A NURSE ONCE I COMPLETE THE PROGRAM?

    No. You will receive a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree, which qualifies you to take the national licensing exam (NCLEX). Once you pass NCLEX, you are a Registered Nurse (RN) with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, RN, BSN.

    Students petitioning to transfer in upper division nursing courses from another institution to meet requirements in the nursing major at Augsburg must consult an advisor about potential adjustments to their course requirements to fulfill each of these graduation skills.

    Other Information

    The BSN program has been planned so that courses in the nursing major can be completed over 16 months of full-time study taking two courses per semester. Students can pursue their studies as quickly as 12 months taking three courses per semester, based on personal choice. Students will be assigned to a nursing faculty adviser to develop a plan of study.

    More time may be required to complete the total course of study depending on the number of liberal arts (general education) courses individual students need to complete the BSN degree and the number of credits each student transfers to Augsburg College from other colleges or universities. Students in Nursing may take non-nursing courses in both the Day and Adult Undergraduate programs. Students interested in pursuing the Nursing major should consult with BSN admissions staff in the Admissions Office for assistance applying.

    Admission to the Nursing Major

    In addition to meeting admission requirements for Augsburg College, admission to the Nursing major requires the following:

    • Completed application
    • Cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher in one’s basic nursing program
    • Unencumbered RN license–applicant must be a registered nurse who is licensed and currently registered to practice in Minnesota prior to beginning the Nursing major
    • Evidence of HIPAA training
    • Up-to-date immunization records
    • Criminal background check (details provided in application process)
    • Special conditions:
    • Students may be provisionally admitted to the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program at Augsburg due to a cumulative GPA of less than 2.5 in their basic nursing program. Full admission to the program requires students to achieve a GPA of 3.00 or better in two liberal arts courses at Augsburg before being fully admitted to the BSN program.
    • Students may apply to Augsburg College prior to completion of their degree program. However, all BSN program admission requirements must be met prior to matriculating into the BSN program at Augsburg.

    Credit for Previous Nursing Courses

    Registered nurses (RNs) transferring into Augsburg College’s BSN completion program will be granted 28 semester credits in recognition of their previous lower division nursing coursework if the following standards are met:

    • Prior nursing education in the United States is taken in an associate degree in nursing (ADN) program or a diploma in nursing program. Both must be state board-approved programs.
    • Nursing coursework taken outside of the United States is submitted for evaluation to the World Education Services (WES), an agency approved by Augsburg College to evaluate foreign transcripts. Reports should be sent directly to Augsburg College. In addition, nursing coursework must be verified for authenticity by the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools (CGFNS). Applicants must request CGFNS (www.cgfns.org) to forward the educational credentials report to the Minnesota State Board of Nursing. Once their credentials are verified, applicants must apply for licensure and demonstrate successful passing of the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX). Nurses who have previously submitted CGFNS credential verification in a state other than Minnesota, and who have passed the NCLEX, will be considered for admission and must meet the same residency requirements expected of all students.

    Students who change their major and transfer out of the BSN completion program will lose the 28 semester credit block grant and their transfer credit evaluation will be reassessed. The 28 semester credit block grant will be applied toward a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing only.

    Options for Completing the Degree

    Augsburg recognizes that nurses have a variety of time schedules, personal responsibilities, and work demands that must be taken into account in any decision to work toward a college degree. For this reason, Augsburg offers full- and part-time sequential alternatives for pursuing a Nursing degree.

    Courses in the Nursing major are generally offered on weekday evenings with practicum courses (NUR 410 and 411) requiring additional weekday time. Generally, nursing classes meet on alternate weekday evenings for four-hour time blocks. Online instruction and activities occur between face-to-face class times. Optional immersion courses and practicums at home and abroad are scheduled throughout the year. Check with the Department of Nursing for details.

    It is recommended to work with an academic advisor for advice on liberal arts courses. Nursing majors can complete courses toward the bachelor’s degree at the Minneapolis campus and at the Rochester learning site.

    Transfer of Upper Division Nursing Courses

    BSN students who are provisionally accepted into the Master of Arts in Nursing program at Augsburg may enroll in up to three designated MAN courses, which can be used to fulfill elective credits in the BSN program as well as fulfill credits in the MAN program. Note that these graduate courses may not transfer into another college or university as graduate courses if they have been used to complete the BSN; Augsburg College, however, accepts the courses as also fulfilling requirements in the MAN. The three graduate Nursing courses plus the practica include the following:

    • NUR 500 Transcultural Health Care (3 semester credits)
    • NUR 500P Practicum: Transcultural Health Care (1 semester credit)
    • NUR 532 Transcultural Healing and Self Care (3 semester credits)
    • NUR 532P Practicum: Transcultural Healing Practices and Self Care (1 semester credit)
    • NUR 541 The Politics of Health Care (3 semester credits)
    • NUR 541P Practicum: Politics of Health Care (1 semester credit)

    Note: Students who decelerate for more than five years may be asked to audit courses already taken. There is a fee to audit courses.

    Departmental Honors

    Admission to the honors major requires a GPA of at least 3.60 in the major and 3.30 overall, application to the department chair by November 1 of the senior year, recommendation by nursing faculty, and an honors thesis to be presented before a faculty committee by April 15. Candidates register for NUR 499 to complete the honors requirement.

    Latin Honors

    To be eligible for Latin honors, a student must meet minimum GPA standards as well as complete a minimum of 56 traditionally-graded credits at Augsburg and have no more than eight elective pass/no credit graded credits at Augsburg (classes offered only as P/N by the department will not be counted, nor will N grades).     How to Succeed in Nursing School

    Come to class. Yes, it’s college and not high school, so the attendance policy may be a little lax, if it exists at all. However, the reason no attendance policy exists is that you are in class of your own free will and you’ve paid a lot of money to be there. So why wouldn’t you show up? Besides, if you’re not in class, you often miss key material that shows up on the test later.

    Take notes. If a teacher stresses a point frequently, consider it something important, both in terms of your nursing practice, and in terms of what will be on the test. Also, if you take notes, you are more likely to retain the information. Essentially, you learn the material three times: once when you hear it, once when you write it down, and once again later when you read your own notes to study.

    Complete the assigned reading and (if you have time) the suggested reading. The best way to deal with reading is to follow the syllabus and read the material before that specific class. If you have questions as you’re reading, write them down so you can ask in class. Which brings us to.

    Participate. Ask questions of the teacher and answer the questions your teacher poses to you. The more engaged you are in the class, the more you’ll get out of it.

    Study for tests. Find a method of studying that works for you. Go through your notes (once immediately following class, and again before the test); if you are a highlighter, go through your highlighted textbook; if you are a social animal, go for some collective study sessions (just make sure they don’t turn into gossip sessions).

    Show up for clinical. In the Army, the saying goes: “right time, right place, right uniform, right attitude.” The same holds true for clinical. Although class may not have a strict attendance policy, you can bet that clinical will. Therefore, if you show up late (without a good excuse, that is), it marks you as unprofessional and will invariably hurt your grade. Also, make sure you know where you’re supposed to meet. Hospitals are confusing places, so showing up early on the first day is a good idea. Make sure that your uniform is ironed, fits properly, and is clean. Lastly, join clinical in the right spirit. Clinical is where the rubber meets the road and you implement everything you learn in class. So, seek out new opportunities and don’t be afraid to try new skills. Look up your patients’ labs and medicines, which will familiarize you with them for tests and the NCLEX-RN.

    Listen to your instructors. Although you will get frustrated with some of them, bear in mind that they have been nurses for a long time and really do know what they are talking about. Also, a good nursing instructor will also want you to succeed. The biggest frustration for nursing instructors is when students do not seek them out when they are having trouble. Therefore, if you are struggling with anything, talk to your nursing instructor about it. Bear in mind, they are trained to listen and to help others. Trust them.

    Volunteer or work as an aide during breaks or over the summer. Not only does this look great on a resume, it gives you valuable experience in the healthcare setting.

    Why you choose nursingIn compiling your wish list for the perfect college, you decide your priorities include small class sizes, teachers with actual experience in their fields, and the best chance for a high-paying job once you ve earned your degree. Although your first concern might be how you could possibly afford such an education, you really have nothing to be worried about. The type of school you have just described is not an elite research university. It s your local community college. Ask anyone who has ever tried to follow a lecture from a 22-year-old teaching assistant in a 400-person auditorium, and they will be able to give you many reasons why you might want to take a look at two year colleges.

    It starts in the classroom. Community colleges emphasize intimate learning environments over assembly-line instruction. Community college classes focus on putting knowledge into practice, as opposed to letting students guess the right answer on a multiple-choice quiz. Furthermore, teachers at community colleges are charged with connecting with students rather than putting half their time into research and publishing, which often requires putting a student assistant in charge of the actual teaching. More importantly, instructors are hired directly from the field they teach, giving them the ability to share with you their relevant real-life experience, as well as the ability to help you connect directly with potential employers.

    It continues on campus. These schools are called community colleges for a reason. At few other institutions of higher education will you be treated so much like a big fish in a small pond as at the community college, where even the college president is often on a first-name basis with many of the students. And while you won t find massive homecoming ceremonies or elaborate pledge weeks, that doesn t mean community college life is lacking in excitement. Two year colleges have athletic teams, student organizations, and student governance just like any other school, only on a much more manageable scale. Quality of experience is emphasized over quantity of faces in the crowd.

    It ends with the bottom line. Now more than 8 million strong, the growing number of community college enrollees demonstrates that students increasingly demand that they get what they pay for. Only in the two year system of higher education, you actually get more. Community college tuition nationwide averages less than $3,000 per year, a fraction of what you would pay at a university. But sticker cost doesn t tell the whole story. Because two year schools emphasize experiential learning, you will more easily land a job should you decide to put off a baccalaureate degree. In fact, many community college degree programs, such as nursing and computer science, have placement rates approaching 100 percent each and every year.

    For these reasons, even if your goal is to earn a bachelor s degree, you owe it to yourself to at least visit your local community college and find out about entrance requirements and transfer options. It might just be the wisest choice you ever make.

    May 30 – GSEHD alumna Brenda C. Williams (master’s in rehabilitation counseling and Ed.D. in higher education administration) was honored as Indiana Tech’s PhD Faculty of the Year. Dr. Williams is the special assistant to the VP/CIO at Montgomery College and a visiting professor at Indiana Tech’s Global Leadership PhD Program.

    Jennifer Lowe receives GSEHD s John Horrworth Children s Book Award

    May 30 – GSEHD student Jennifer Lowe (master’s, elementary education) was named winner of the 2017 John Horrworth Children’s Book Award on May 19th at the Elementary Education Program’s Class of 2017 Graduation Celebration. Dr. Gloria Horrworth. Professor Emeritus of Reading Education, established the endowment in 2001 in memory of her son, John, who was an avid reader before his passing from leukemia at the age of 14. The endowment provides annual cash prizes to Elementary Education Program students who prevail in a children’s book writing competition. Kim Sloan. instructor for the program’s Children’s Literature course, conducted the children’s book writing project, which culminates in this annual competition with awards determined by a panel of judges. The winner receives $500 and honorable mentions receive $100 each. Jennifer Lowe won for her book Am I an Artist? The two honorable mentions were Josh Benjamin for Granny Smith’s Memory. and Jessica Yang for Fly’s Tutu.

    Dr. Sharon Lynch and Her Team Won the Public Choice Award

    May 30 – Dr. Sharon Lynch ‘s video, Creating Opportunity in an Inclusive STEM Agricultural High School . was voted one of the top ten videos out of 171 videos in the National Science Foundation’s STEM for All showcase, winning a Public Choice Award with 2,676 views in 35 states and 7 countries. The Opportunity Structures for Preparation and Inspiration (OSPrI) research program studied eight highly successful inclusive STEM high schools across the U.S. and identified the components critical to their effectiveness.     “U.S. News and World Report” rated the University of Illinois, Chicago (UIC) program as the seventh best nursing program in the nation and the best nursing school in the state of Illinois for 2007 (the last time the magazine rated nursing schools). “U.S. News” rated programs based on surveys by nursing school deans, faculty members and hospital administrators throughout the nation.

    UIC’s nursing program offers a bachelor of science (BSN) degree along with a master of science (MS), doctor of nursing practice (DNP) and a PhD in the field.     The American Association of Colleges of Nurses (AACN) states that accelerated bachelor’s programs in nursing is one of the fastest-expanding education areas. Getting your accelerated BSN is the fastest way for you to transition from your non-nursing job into full licensure and practice as an RN, typically in 12-15 months full time.     Common Characteristics of Accelerated BSN Students

    ACCN states that typical accelerated BSN students are more motivated, are older and have much higher academic standards than regular nursing students. Accelerated program students usually are highly motivated in class and are aggressive in gaining valuable clinical experiences. Most faculty report that they are some of their best students, and usually are not shy about challenging instructors.

    Those who graduate from accelerated BSN programs are highly valued by hospitals. These employees tend to bring many skills to a job. Employers usually report that such graduates have higher levels of maturity, have very strong clinical abilities, and learn fast.

    Number of Students Enrolled in Accelerated BSN Programs

    A 2012 survey determined that there were 15,002 students enrolled at that time in accelerated BSN programs across the US, which was up from 7829 in 2004. The survey also found that many accelerated BSN program graduates move on to earn their MSN as well, with some of them becoming nursing educators. This profession also is in very high demand.

    Common Requirements for Accelerated BSN Programs

    The precise requirements for admission into an accelerated BSN program will vary by institution. However, there are some common requirements that you can expect:

    A bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in any major.

    A GPA of 2.5-3.0+, depending upon the program.

    Written transcripts from all universities you have attended.

    You may need to submit standardized test scores such as the GRE for some programs. Other programs do not require test scores.

    Some programs will require you to have certain prerequisites before starting your classes. These could include statistics, human anatomy, microbiology, psychology, and nutrition.

    Nursing programs in Texas are offered from associate’s degree to doctoral levels, though a number of schools may offer diploma programs.     Practice – APRN Scope of Practice

    The Texas Board of Nursing recognizes that advanced nursing practice is dynamic. The scope of advanced practice evolves through experience, acquisition of knowledge, evidence-based practice, technology development and changes in the health care delivery system. Therefore, advanced practice registered nurses may need to practice in new settings, perform new procedures, and develop new skills during their professional careers. It is common for the Board of Nurse Examiners to receive questions such as, Can an advanced practice registered nurse treat a patient with that condition? , or Is it within the scope of practice of an advanced practice registered nurse to perform that procedure?

    Scope of practice is defined as the activities that an individual health care provider performs in the delivery of patient care. Scope of practice reflects the types of patients for whom the advanced practice registered nurse can care; what procedures/activities the advanced practice registered nurse can perform; and influences the ability of the advanced practice registered nurse to seek reimbursement for services provided.

    Determining scope of practice includes:

    • Advanced practice education in a role and specialty
    • Legal implications (e.g. compliance with the Nursing Practice Act and Board Rules)
    • Scope of practice statements as published by national professional specialty and advanced practice nursing organizations

    Both professional and individual scopes of practice exist. Professional scopes of practice are derived from professional specialty and advanced practice registered nursing organizations. An individual advanced practice registered nurse may or may not practice the full scope of the professional role and specialty. Decisions regarding individual scope of practice are complex and related to an advanced practice registered nurse s knowledge, skills and competencies. Each advanced practice registered nurse must practice within his/her individual scope.

    National professional specialty and advanced practice registered nursing organizations broadly define scope of practice for each role. These documents address role, function, population served, and practice setting. They offer advanced practice registered nurses the broadest parameters for scope of practice. Therefore, professional scopes of practice are recommended as the initial resource in defining an individual s scope of practice.

    Formal advanced practice registered nursing education is the foundation for the individual s scope of practice and evolves over the professional lifetime of the individual. Clinical experience in various settings, continuing nursing education, formal course work and developments in healthcare all impact individual scope of practice. However, there are finite limits to expansion of scope of practice without completing additional formal education. Advanced practice registered nurses cannot change their legally recognized titles or designations through experience or continuing nursing education; these changes may only be achieved through additional formal educational preparation and meeting all legal requirements to use that title and practice in that specialty set forth by the BON.

    The following questions may help to clarify whether a new activity/procedure can be incorporated into an individual s scope of practice:

    • Is it consistent with one s professional scope of practice?
    • Is it consistent with statutory or regulatory laws?
    • Is it consistent with one s education in the role and specialty?
    • Is it consistent with the scope of one s recognized title or does it evolve into another advanced practice title recognized by the board requiring additional formal education and legal recognition?
    • Is it consistent with the Standards of Nursing Practice outlined in Board Rule 217.11?
    • Is it consistent with evidence-based care?
    • Is it consistent with reasonable and prudent practice?
    • Are you willing to accept accountability and liability for the activity and outcomes?

    Adding New Procedures and/or Patient Care Activities

    When adding a new procedure or patient care activity, the advanced practice registered nurse should maintain documentation of additional education and competency. An advanced practice registered nurse may add new procedures or patient care activities to his/her individual scope of practice by using the following suggestions:

    • Identify the benefit for a new patient care activity, taking into consideration consumer demand, standards for safe practice, and interest of the advanced practice registered nurse.
    • Ensure that state or federal statutes and regulations do not constrain the advanced practice registered nurse from incorporating the activity into practice.
    • Identify established professional standards, if available, supporting the performance of the new activity.
    • Establish goals and methods for learning that encompass knowledge and skills acquisition through which competence is attained.
    • Demonstrate competent performance of the procedure/activity.
    • Maintain records that reflect the acquisition and maintenance of competency.

    The Texas Board of Nursing recognizes that individual scopes of practice will vary and that what is within the individual scope of practice for one advanced practice registered nurse may not be within the individual scope of practice for another advanced practice registered nurse authorized to practice in the same role and specialty. However, it is important to keep in mind that the Board holds each advanced practice registered nurse accountable for knowing and practicing within his/her professional and individual scope of practice.

    A Certified Nursing Assistant career is a great choice for someone who has a desire to help others but who may not have the time or money to attend nursing or medical school.

    But that shouldn’t be interpreted to mean CNAs have few responsibilities and an easy work flow. The day-to-day activities of a CNA are varied and can be complicated one minute and a breeze the next; but the work is seldom routine.

    CNA work is appealing due to its hands-on nature and practitioner’s ability to work closely with doctors and gain vast amounts of applicable medical knowledge without years of academic training. The work is also incredibly stable as CNAs fill an essential healthcare role that is expected to become even more in demand in coming years as an expansive baby boomer population continues to age and require more and more medical care.

    The required academic experience of a CNA is considerably less than that of a Registered Nurse who will likely have a minimum of a four-year bachelor’s degree or a doctor who may have eight or more years of school in addition to residency work. A CNA can expect to attend an accredited program for about two years to achieve an Associate’s Degree before undergoing certification testing. Some practices may require additional hands-on training but that varies by practice and does not follow a set routine.

    Activities of a CNA may involve taking vital signs, weighing patients, assisting patients getting into or out of bed or walking, delivering messages, monitoring vital signs, collecting samples for testing, assisting with patient hygiene, feeding and monitoring food and liquid intake. CNAs may also assist doctors with diagnosis and treatment of conditions ranging from colds and flu to a yeast infection or more serious ailments such as diabetes and cancer.

    This work may take place in a variety of settings that range from a doctor’s office or clinic to hospitals, long-term care facilities, rehabilitation facilities, outpatient care settings and even in-home environments where the CNA may work with limited supervision. It is important to know that a CNA is fairly low in the hierarchy of a medical practice’s staff and may be prone to being given jobs that are less desirable to others in the organization.

    Currently, the average national salary for a CNA is about $29,000. While that may not seem like a lot compared to other professions, consider the stability and in-demand nature of the job. That is extremely beneficial, especially in a down economy. Additionally, CNAs pick up valuable knowledge along the way and with additional education have many doors to advancement available to them.

    Students who graduate with a B.S. degree in Nursing from Western will possess the following skill sets. They will be able to:

    Exercise critical thinking in using the nursing process to assess, diagnose, plan, implement, and evaluate the care provided to individuals, families and communities.

    Apply the nursing process to design, implement, and evaluate therapeutic nursing interventions to provide preventive, curative, supportive, and restorative care for individuals, families, and communities in both structures and unstructured settings, using a variety of techniques.

    Use a variety of communication techniques. including written documentation, in the process of assessment, counseling, and therapeutic interventions with individual clients, families, groups and communities.

    Develop and implement a variety of teaching-learning strategies in the provision of health teaching for individuals, families, and groups in a variety of settings.

    Use the process of scientific inquiry and research findings to improve nursing care delivery.

    Students interested in majoring in nursing at Western Connecticut State University (WCSU) must complete a dual admission process. Initially, students must be accepted into the University as pre- nursing. Once accepted into the University, application for admission to the Department of Nursing (DON) is made at the beginning of the spring semester of the Freshman year. Applications are available on-line or in the nursing department at the end of December and due to the Nursing Office the first Monday of February. Incomplete or late applications will not be reviewed by the Department of Nursing.
    All students must be admitted to the university prior to applying for admission to the nursing major. The applicant pool is not limited to pre-nursing students. The decision to admit an applicant to the Nursing major is made by the Department of Nursing.

    Admission to nursing is competitive with a grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 being the minimum considered for acceptance. Students are ranked according to GPA and successful completion of all prerequisites. Qualified students may not be accepted because of a limited number of clinical placements and limited Department of Nursing resources. Admission is limited to 60-85 students.

    In evaluating students for acceptance into the nursing program the following criteria are used: GPA, evaluation of overall academic record including number of course withdrawals, prerequisite course failures, and academic success at other colleges and universities. Students must earn at least a C in the four science prerequisite courses (BIO 105, 106, and CHE 120, 121). Sciences cannot be more than 5 years old. Consistent with WCSU admission requirements, preference is given to those candidates who, in the judgment of the DON, have academic and personal qualifications with the greatest potential for program success.

    Applicants must have successfully completed or be enrolled in the following courses:

    COM 162 Interpersonal Communication
    PSY 100 Introduction to Psychology
    SOC 100 Introduction to Sociology
    BIO 105 and BIO 106 or equivalent with a grade of C or better
    CHE 120 and CHE 121 or equivalent with a grade of C or better

    Students are ineligible to apply for admission to the WCSU nursing program if they have been dismissed for either academic or clinical reasons from another nursing program.
    Students newly accepted into the program must adhere to the Health Policies of the DON. The following information must be submitted on or before June 1 prior to starting nursing classes.

    Current health form

    Results of either PPD skin test or chest x-ray or quantiferrin blood test

    Evidence of rubella, rubeola, mumps and varicella vaccinations or antibody titres

    Evidence of measles vaccination

    Evidence of Hepatitis B vaccination, Hepatitis B titre or signed declination to receive vaccine

    Tdap vaccine completed within the last 10 years

    CPR certification for professional rescuers

    Students without documentation of health requirements and/or CPR certification will not be allowed to participate in clinical experiences.
    Transfer students coming into the University must first apply to the admissions department and must meet the same standards listed above. Western students wishing to change their major to Nursing must apply to the department for admission to the Nursing major and must meet the same requirements as pre-nursing students. Please refer to the above criteria.

    1. In order to remain in the Nursing program, students must earn at least a C grade in all courses with a NUR 200 or NUR 300 designation and BIO 215. **Please be reminded that sophomore nursing students who are transitioning between the fall and spring semester are required to complete a Medication Math Test and must pass with 85**.
    2. In order to remain in the Nursing program, nursing students must fulfill academic requirements and must also show evidence of meeting the behavioral objectives (cognitive, psychomotor and affective) of preparation for professional nursing as described and distributed in each nursing course with a NUR 200 and NUR 300 designation.
    3. A student who receives a grade of C- or lower in a NUR 200 or NUR 300 level Nursing course, whose cumulative grade point average has dropped below 2.50, who has withdrawn from a NUR 200 or NUR 300 level nursing course, who has taken a leave of absence from the Nursing program (whether medical or otherwise), or who has withdrawn from the Nursing program must apply for readmission to the Nursing program. The student may be readmitted to the program provided that, in the judgment of the Nursing faculty, the student meets the criteria for readmission.
    4. Any student who receives more than one course grade below C in any of the NUR courses will not be readmitted to the Nursing program. In addition, any student who has for any reason reapplied and been admitted and then subsequently withdrawn or fails, will not be allowed to reapply a second time.
    5. Students who demonstrate an unsafe level of patient care will not be permitted to continue in the clinical area.
    6. Under provisions of Public Act 86-365, students whose ability to function is impaired or who have engaged in unethical or illegal acts, or whose behavior does not conform to accepted standards of the Nursing profession may jeopardize their eligibility for obtaining or retaining professional nurse licensure in the State of Connecticut. (A copy of the act with explanatory material is available for review in the department office.) Such conduct or behavior may also be grounds for disciplinary action, including suspension or dismissal from the program, by the Nursing faculty or departmental administrator.
    1. The student must have earned a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5 based on at least 125 credits earned.
    2. The student must have at least a C grade in all 200- and 300-level Nursing courses.
    3. The student must have sustained evidence of academic and behavioral characteristics acceptable for professional nursing as set forth in the philosophy and objectives of the Department of Nursing.

CALCampus is a private, international, online distance learning institution, located in New Hampshire, which offers both college and high school courses solely through the medium of the Internet. Recognized and licensed by the Higher Education Commission – Career School Division of the New Hampshire Department of Education and accredited by the North Central Association Commission on Accreditation and School Improvement (NCA CASI), CALCampus has been recognized and accepted by the international community for decades as an exclusive online distance learning institution. Enrollment is open to individual learners anywhere in the world who have access to the Internet.

    CALCampus was founded in 1982 as the Computer Assisted Learning Center (CALC) and has been teaching exclusively online since early 1986 when it opened its first online tutoring center for high school and continuing education learners on the QuantumLink network. It was known for years as the CALC Online Campus and adopted the name of CALCampus. CALCampus was the first to develop and implement the concept of a totally online-based school through which administration, real-time classroom instruction, and materials were provided online.

    CALCampus provides individual courses for job skills enhancement, career change, continuing education, adult basic education, personal and professional development, undergraduate college credit, and high school prerequisites for adult learners. Courses are offered in the academic areas of mathematics, science, social science, humanities, business, law, and English. English (ESL) courses are offered for non-native speakers.

    CALCampus issues a hardcopy official transcript of course completion with grade earned for each individual course successfully completed. For programs, we issue a certificate of program completion with transcript of courses completed for the program.     Online Campus

    CALCampus services (libraries, administrative communications, conference rooms, Web site, Web applications, etc.) are provided through our dedicated Course Management System, which is accessible to registered students via the Internet at http://cms.calcampus.edu/

    Through our Online Campus, students and teachers utilize our online classrooms and libraries. Teachers are available through the Course Management System and e-mail, and they hold weekly office hours online for realtime chat. We provide an online Bookstore for course textbooks.

    Accreditation & State Approval

    We have two divisions: Postsecondary (non-degree) and High School. CALCampus serves adult learners with courses that are primarily postsecondary for college credit. We also offer high school credit courses for adult learners.

    • Postsecondary Division: Licensed and approved by the State of New Hampshire Higher Education Commission, Career School Licensing RSA 188-G:1-10, as a private non-degree granting distance learning postsecondary career school. The Commission’s mission is to provide access to higher education and to ensure educational quality.

    By our choice, we do not offer financial aid nor participate in federal student loan programs and do not offer degrees. This means, of course, that we will not be on lists of degree-granting colleges nor on lists of colleges that participate in federal loan programs.

  • The High School Division is also accredited the National Association of Private Schools (NAPS). NAPS accredits our High School Division. NAPS is a consortium of Christian Educators and Private School Administrators from across the United States and Canada. The Association is dedicated to recognizing and improving the Spiritual and Educational quality of Private and Christian Schools.

    History and Vision

    CALCampus began as the Computer Assisted Learning Center (CALC), which was founded in 1982 in Rindge, New Hampshire, as a small, offline computer-based, adult learning center. The center was based on the vision of providing affordable, quality instruction to individual learners through the use of computers. In those early years, CALC also compiled and distributed public domain educational software and published articles dealing with the use of computers in education.

    CALC’s vision broadened over the years as the online world opened and we were able to serve students from diverse geographic locations through the use of computers and the Internet. In early 1986, CALC became a totally online school through its Tutoring Center on the QuatumLink network, and followed with structured courses in 1986. From 1986 through 1995, CALC Online Campus, as it was known, opened its online school on several major telecommunications networks, including PC-Link, AppleLink, AOL, Delphi, GEnie, and CompuServe. In early 1995, CALC Online Campus made its online school available through the Internet as CALCampus.com and after receiving regional accreditation, the domain changed to calcampus.edu. Since 1986, CALCampus has been in continual operation as an online school and we have been pleased to see the increasing adoption of online education by the mainstream educational community over the decades.

    Our Faculty and Administration

    The CALCampus Faculty are veterans in online distance teaching and are practicing educators and professionals in their fields. Some have been teaching with us online since the 1980s. Most instructors have a Master’s degree in their subject areas; some have Doctorates. Teachers in our high school diploma program core curriculum are certified. CALCampus is administered by a Director who has extensive experience and academic credentials in the field of online distance learning and educational administration. The Director and Faculty regularly consult on curriculum matters, make improvements to existing courses and programs, and develop new courses and programs to fulfill the needs of our students. CALCampus has a School Committee, comprised of the Director, a senior Faculty member, and a school Attorney, which communicates on matters of importance to the school’s curriculum, operation, financial matters, and student body needs. We all have one shared goal: to provide quality instruction to our students.
