Students should make it clear to the University that the qualification is Ofqual QCF validated at the stated level. Online Business School can provide the requisite Ofqual documentation and transcript if required, alternatively students can visit the Ofqual website to confirm the qualification https://www.gov.uk/find-a-regulated-qualification.

Each University will consider an application on its merits subject to their own specific entry requirements. Below is a list of a few UK Distance Learning providers offering Business programmes:

Study for an AMBA Accredited MBA by distance learning

The Association of MBAs is a membership organization that provides accreditation and upholds the highest international standards of MBA programmes. Many UK Universities are Members and offer distance learning study. Although credits cannot be given, admission can be gained via the Online Business School Level 6 plus the requisite additional entry requirements of your chosen University. Students should check the regulations of their chosen University first.

Top up and recognition by non UK universities

Students may want to study at Institutions nearer their home country or qualifications outside of UK. For example many Australian Universities offer distance learning and will recognise equivalent UK qualifications on a case by case basis.

15 Online Business Ideas You Can Start Tomorrow, on line business.#On #line

15 Online Business Ideas You Can Start Tomorrow

When you dream of opening your own business, you might envision four white walls and a mess of boxes to unpack in a commercial space. However, it doesn t have to be this way. With today s technology, you can start and run a business online, often with little to no cost.

By focusing on your strengths, you ll be able to build a client roster and get your online-based business started. Here are 15 great ideas you can run with.

1. SEO consultant

Do you know the ins and outs of search engines and have skills in platforms like Google Analytics? The owners of a lot of smaller companies don t realize how much of an impact search engine optimization (SEO) can have on their business. Educate those business owners on the power of SEO to help transform their websites into a more SEO-friendly property. Use your skills to show business owners how to read and use their analytics data the right way, and how to properly use keywords and structure content to get more traffic.

2. Business coaching

If you possess a great deal of business experience and knowledge, why not create a business that helps aspiring entrepreneurs find success? You can use your skills to help new business owners get off to a good start and help experienced entrepreneurs keep up with demand. To show off your knowledge and skills and bring in clients, you can also write articles about business on platforms like LinkedIn.

3. Specialized retailer

There s an audience for everything, whether it s making dollhouse furniture or creating organic dog food. With a specialty e-commerce store, you can reach those customers who are seeking your specific products. All you need is a web-hosting service with an integrated shopping cart feature or with e-commerce software, and your business will be operational in no time. You can even work with vendors to ship products to customers on your behalf, which means you don t need to own a lot of inventory. [See Related Story: A Small Business Guide to E-Commerce Shipping]

4. Social media consultant

Larger companies can hire an agency or full-time staff member to run their Facebook and Twitter accounts, but small businesses often have to handle their own social media marketing. With so many responsibilities, business owners are often too busy, overwhelmed or undereducated about the importance of social media to spend time developing and implementing a great social media strategy. As a consultant, you can help them determine the best tactics, posting schedules and content for their target audience. As their follower count grows, so will your business.

5. Web design

There s nothing more off-putting than a poorly designed website, and often, it kills credibility. If you know HTML and have a good eye for design, you can launch a service to create attractive, easy-to-use websites for small businesses. Put your skills to good use for business owners who want to take their online presence to the next level. Build a comprehensive portfolio, and then create your own website to show it off and attract a steady stream of clients.

6. Resume/cover letter writing

It s a tough truth to swallow, but a standout resume and cover letter can make all the difference when you re applying for a job. While listing career accomplishments might seem like an easy task, the fine art of humble bragging eludes some of us. Find work by helping others to get hired with the aid of stellar resumes. Capitalize on the increasingly important social media branding bandwagon and offer to fix LinkedIn profiles as well.

7. Assistant/task manager

Do you have impeccable organizational skills? What about cleaning skills? Can you quickly and efficiently carry out these tasks? Maybe it s time to put those skills to good use by becoming an online personal assistant or task manager. Companies like TaskRabbit or Zirtual allow you to sign up for tasks you want to complete including data research, virtual assistant or running errands and begin building clientele.

8. Professional freelancer

You might not think of freelancing as a business, but with more and more companies turning to part-time contract workers to fill their skill gaps, it s not hard to imagine making a living providing businesses with a variety of freelance services. Depending on your skill sets, you could work for multiple companies in a variety of fields that offer you flexibility and a refreshing change of pace. According to the freelance job listing website Freelancer.com, tech services, content creation and web design are popular fields for contract work.

9. Affiliate marketing

If you re a person who loves leaving customer reviews on sites like Amazon, stop doing it for free. Word-of-mouth advertising is still a huge lead generator for many companies, and a lot of businesses are willing to share a portion of their profits with persuasive individuals who will promote their products to the public. If you have a personal website with a large following, this might be easier to accomplish (PR reps are always seeking out brand advocates they can send free samples to). Smart Passive Income breaks down three types of affiliate marketing and explains which one is most profitable.

10. Remote technical support

Many small businesses don t have room in their budget for a full-time IT employee, so when their systems go on the fritz, they ll usually call a computer-savvy friend or family member. If you have experience working on computers and networks, you can eliminate their need to call in a favor and offer immediate remote technical assistance.

11. Virtual consignment store

Bargain hunters and thrift store enthusiasts can turn a nice profit reselling their vintage clothing finds. Brand yourself by setting up an independent website as your virtual storefront, but use a managed service like Google Checkout to handle transactions. High-resolution images and catchy copy for your products will make you stand out in the sea of internet users trying to sell their used items.

12. Handmade craft seller

Online sites like Etsy and ArtFire are platforms that make it extremely easy for crafters who can produce a steady supply of quality handmade items, like crocheted blankets or unique painted glassware. Startup costs are extremely low if you purchase your materials in bulk from a craft supplier, and if you can turn around orders quickly, you ll be making a profit in no time at all. It s even possible to turn your store into a full-time gig.

13. App development

Mobile applications are more popular than ever, and people are willing to pay good money for ways to manage their lives from their smartphones. If you have a great idea and happen to know coding, you can run with it and create your app yourself. If you just have an idea and don t know the ins and outs of how to turn it into a reality, there are plenty of software developers looking to collaborate with people on app creation.

If you have ideas and words bursting within you, you ve most likely thought about starting a blog, at the very least. With the freedom to create your own beat and style your platform the way you desire, you can completely personalize your blogging experience and reach millions of people across the world. The larger the audience, the higher the chance you have at creating a successful business out of it. [See Related Story: How to Turn Your Blog into a Business]

The wedding industry is booming, and with all of the stress and pressure that piles on every couple during their engagement, it s nearly impossible for brides-to-be to enjoy their wedding planning. However, if you have a knack for organization and a passion for weddings, you can start your own career as a bridal concierge, dealing with the nitty gritty wedding details so the bride doesn t have to.

5 Unique Online Business Ideas, Small But Successful, on line business.#On #line

5 Unique Online Business Ideas, Small But Successful

Entrepreneurship has always fascinated me. I m amazed by the pride and sense of accomplishment that comes with building your own business, and I respect the risks that come with working for yourself. Even if your venture fails, as a business leader you still learn valuable lessons that you can use to make your next attempt more successful.

Taking a successful business model from someone else and building on it is no crime. In fact, it is how most leaders build businesses. It doesn t always take a stroke of genius to get to the top. But when those once-in-a-lifetime ideas strike, your window to act may be small. I don t accept the idea that all of the good ideas have been taken. These five unique businesses are proof that you can find prosperity, even in a market that may not have even existed when you first had your idea.

1. Santa Mail

When I first heard about Santa Mail, I had one of those Why didn t I think of that? moments. The premise couldn t be simpler: Parents order letters for children, and Santa Claus himself puts a note in the mail. For just under $10, your kids will get a personalized letter from Santa that is (genuinely) postmarked from the North Pole in Alaska. The site isn t flashy, but it s simple and effective.

Santa Mail has been around since 2003, and as far as I can tell, it was the first company of its kind. Since then, at least four sites offering the same service have popped up. Even though someone may come along and offer something better, for now, Santa Mail is at the top of its niche.

2. Alchemy Goods

Though recycling has been popular for years, practical-use items made from recyclable items and materials are quickly becoming more desirable. From clothes and bags to water bottles and wallets, these unique items are high-quality goods that let people show off the positive difference they re making for the environment. Alchemy Goods was originally born not out of ingenuity, but of necessity.

When Alchemy owner Eli Reich s messenger bag was stolen, he decided that instead of buying another, he would make one himself. With plenty of bicycle inner tubes lying around, he decided to make it the primary material for his new bag. Long story short, the completed product was a huge hit at the office, and Eli began to make them on a much larger scale. Today, Alchemy products are carried in many stores across the country.

3. Fetal Greetings

The greeting card business has been huge for years, and it seems to get bigger with every passing holiday. Fetal Greetings offers a special opportunity for expecting mothers: To have their baby greet the world in the form of a card! Holly Nill-McKay started the company in 1999, and while the idea may sound strange, I love it. It s a great example of a unique and clever idea that builds on an existing industry. The cards themselves are cute, and they make wonderful surprises to send to family and friends to announce a pregnancy.

4. Something Store

Do you love the feeling of waiting for something in the mail? I know I do, and that s why I tried out Something Store. A few years ago, I saw a piece in a popular magazine about an online store that sells mystery objects. I was intrigued. For $10 (no shipping cost), they send you a random item. It could be anything in the world. Since 2007, they ve shipped over 50,000 somethings to customers who wait with anxious anticipation.

I tried it and received an unusual, metal, spider-like object. It winds up and moves along the floor or tabletop. I looked it up and found that it usually retails for about $28. While I wouldn t necessarily have bought it in the first place, for $10 I got a pretty good deal.

5. I Do Now I Don t

Every day, couples in love get engaged. And every day, couples who have fallen out of love separate or break an engagement. When the latter happened to Josh Opperman, his fiancee was kind enough to return the engagement ring, and he didn t know what to do with it. Since the wholesale markup on engagement rings is insanely high, he would have taken a huge loss in returning it. So instead, he started his business, I Do Now I Don t, an online marketplace for unwanted engagement rings. Customers can buy rings at prices far cheaper than you d find at a traditional store, and you can sell at rates that are better than you d get if you tried to return the ring. Business started booming, and now you can buy and sell other jewelry items there too.

Final Word

This short list of examples just goes to show that not all of the good business ideas are taken just yet. It seems to me that when I get one of those genius ideas, I m always in the shower. By the time I get out and try to remember what was on my mind, it s gone. I hope it is not just me that this happens to.

How do you get inspiration to strike? And what do you do to remember your ideas and put them into action? Share your ideas, or any other unique sites or businesses you ve found. I m always looking for strange and intriguing things.

You Can Still Get a Free Business Listing on Yahoo

December 23, 2015

About Eric Shanfelt

Eric is the Founder and CEO of Local Marketing Institute. He has over 20 years of experience in digital marketing with multiple B2B and consumer media companies. Eric also has a passion for local businesses. especially the local microbreweries in Northern Colorado where he lives.

Believe it or not, 1 out of every 8 searches in the U.S. are still done through Yahoo, so you want your local business to be properly represented there. Yahoo has gone through a lot of confusing changes recently, but the good news is you can still claim a free local business listing. Here s how.

Earlier this year, Yahoo announced it was spinning off its small business division into a separate company called Aabaco. They said the local business services would be branded under the name of Luminate. To further complicate things, Yahoo then outsourced management of its local business listings to Yext .

Now Luminate is gone, Yahoo Small Business has become Aabaco Small Business, and Aabaco outsources to Yext to manage local business listing under a product called Localworks.

Confused yet? You re not alone!

Don t worry about all of this. There s only one thing that s important here s how can still get a free local business listing on Yahoo.

How to Claim a Free Local Business Listing on Yahoo

  1. Go to Yahoo, search for your business, and you should see a link to Add or update your business .
  2. That link will take you to http://www.yext.com/pl/yahoo-claims/index.html (you can just go here directly if you prefer).
  3. Enter your business information and click Find My Listings .
  4. You ll then see page that is powered by Yext. It s a bit intimidating with an error rate and all of these warnings that you re not standing out and not verified through Yext. For now, don t worry about all of this, just click the big Continue button.
  5. Next, you can update the information about your listing. Complete this page fully and don t forget to use the same NAP (name, address, phone) that you use everywhere for your business. Click the Continue button when you re done.
  6. Yext will then present you with four paid plans, but immediately below these plans is a tiny link that says, Claim your Basic Listing only on Yahoo click that link.
  7. You re now at the Yahoo Basic Listing Checkout page. Complete the checkout and click Place Order (it s free).
  8. Yext will send you an email to verify your email address. Click the link, create a password, then login to your account.
  9. The final step is to verify you represent this business. The easiest method is to have them call you, but there are other methods as well.

That s it! You now have claimed and can manage your free listing on Yahoo.

Here s a video walk-through of the entire process.

The stock market is vanishing

The stock market isn’t what it used to be.

As noted by Steven DeSanctis, equity strategist at Jefferies, the sheer number of companies listed on stock exchanges has been dropping off precipitously.

The number of firms with shares publicly listed in the University of Chicago’s Center for Research in Security Prices aggregate index has fallen to 3,267 from a peak of 6,364 in 1997.

This, in fact, is the lowest number of listed stocks since 1984.

There are a number of possible reasons for this. Here’s DeSanctis’ breakdown:

“Between the lack of IPO activity. the pick-up of M A, and buybacks, the US equity world is becoming smaller and smaller, and this could be one of many reasons why active managers are lagging behind their indexes. Companies may not want to come public due to the additional cost of Sarbanes-Oxley or the fact that the private market has become a bigger source of financing than it has been in the past.”

While the answer is probably some combination of these factors, DeSanctis also thinks that the declining number of stocks may be affecting the performance of many professional stock pickers.

The argument is that with fewer companies to choose from, active managers are forced to crowd into certain stocks. Crowding makes it impossible to differentiate returns and causes these managers, in DeSanctis’ mind, to fall short of their benchmarks.

Valuing a Business based on Market Comps

The market approach offers you perhaps the most compelling way to determine the business value. Many business people and appraisal experts believe the market to be the ultimate judge of what a business is worth.

In this sense, the business market value is revealed by the price the business fetches in an actual sale. Comparison against the sales of similar businesses is the next best thing – you can gather enough statistical evidence to price your business quite accurately.

Key uses of market-based business valuation

Determining your business value by such market comparisons is especially useful in these situations:

  1. To set an asking price or offer price for a business acquisition.
  2. To defend your business valuation in a legal controversy or before the tax authorities.
  3. To justify your business value in a dispute such as partner disagreements or buyout.

Business fair market value estimation

Market comparisons are an excellent way to estimate the very important fair market value of a business. This is by far the most common measure of business value – and is the de-facto standard used in most business valuations.

Valuation Multiples: business value calculation

You can use a number of valuation multiples to estimate your business fair market value. All such multiples are statistically derived ratios that relate the potential business selling price to some measure of its financial performance.

Using the valuation multiples derived from comparable business sales, you can determine what your business is worth based on its recent revenues, net income, discretionary cash flow, EBITDA. total assets or book value, among others.

For example, you can take the Price to Gross Revenues Multiple and multiply it by your business revenue figure. The result is the market-based estimate of what your business is worth.

Example

ValuAdder offers you a set of intelligent tools to quickly assess your business market value. First, you select your business type from among 425 industries. Next, you enter the key financial parameters for your business. Finally, you calculate the fair market value range, average and median values for your business.

You can also explore how the businesses in your entire industry group are priced by the market. This is very useful to estimate the value of businesses that generate income from a number of profit centers, such as product sales and client services.

7-Eleven. Volkswagen cases show why we should push back on ‘corporate ethics’

Chairman and major shareholder of 7-Eleven Russ Withers sits in a Senate Committee hearing in Melbourne. Julian Smith/AAP

There is perhaps no phrase more hackneyed in the corporate world than: “good ethics is good business”. Against the image of the ruthless business baron who will stop at nothing in the pursuit of wealth and power, the slogan tells us there is no friction between being good and being successful.

As luck should have it (for corporations that is) it is argued organisations can stand up and be righteous about their do-gooding, and this will actually lead to the achievement of self-interested business results. The cake can be had and eaten.

But does this ethical catch phrase really hold sway in the corporate world? Events this September suggest not.

The month of the corporate scandal

September 2015 was mired in corporate scandal. German car manufacturer Volkswagen was raked over the coals for installing software in its cars that ensured it falsely passed emission tests. Eleven million cars were involved over a period of seven years. VW’s CEO Martin Winterkorn resigned over the affair and now faces possible criminal charges .

American corporation Turing Pharmaceuticals was publicly vilified for its predatory pricing when it raised the price of the drug Daraprim by 4000%. This is a drug used to treat infections associated with HIV and AIDS. Turing’s CEO Martin Shkreli was described by the Washington Post as “the most hated man in America”.

In Australia trouble arrived at convenience store chain 7-Eleven when the ABC’s documentary series Four Corners revealed its use of exploitative and illegal work practices to reduce its labour costs. Employees were being paid less than half the legal minimum wage. Young and foreign workers were especially targeted. The scandal saw the resignations of 7-Eleven’s chairman Russ Withers, and its CEO Warren Wilmot.

Bad ethics is good business

Each of these scandals has been scrutinised in terms of business ethics. We are not talking here about contentious and nuanced debates about the nature of morality. In these cases the ethical issues relate to cheating, lying, deception, law breaking, exploitation, and merciless profiteering. As far as any common understanding of ethics is concerned these things are on the far side of the thick and grey line that separates right from wrong.

What do these cases have in common? Each one suggests there was an ethos in place in these corporations that held that “bad ethics is good business”. Seven years of highly orchestrated cheating at VW meant increased sales. In 2009 VW became the world’s biggest car manufacturer .

Institutionalised wage fraud and labour exploitation at 7-Eleven kept store costs down, increasing profits both for franchisees and (especially) for the parent company. 7-Eleven has twice been names Australia’s “franchisor of the year”. Price gouging at Turing meant a drug listed on The World Health Organization’s essential medicines list could bolster the company’s profits by exploiting the sick and vulnerable.

Just don’t get caught

The “bad ethics is good business” approach was going well for these businesses until they got caught. These three cases have triggered debates still raging in all sectors of society. Heads have rolled and bottom lines are jeopardised.

Does this really confirm that “bad ethics is bad business”? Of course not. There is no doubt many other corporations are profiting handsomely from deceit, lies, fraud and exploitation. The scandals of September 2015 show that “bad ethics is good business … unless you get caught”.

It’s not just about not getting caught. It is also about the political, legal, social and economic implications of being found out. In the cases of VW, 7-Eleven and Turing there has been a massive public and media outcry about their reprehensible and selfish behaviour.

Bringing these corporations to justice was not the work of one heroic individual, nor the result of government action. It was a collective effort that involved NGOs, scientists, academics, politicians, the media and the general public. This was a victory of civil society and democratic dissent.

So, we can reformulate our proposal: “Bad ethics is good business … unless you get caught … and as long as you aren’t the subject of a public outcry”.

Democratic business ethics

When corporations speak of business ethics their idea is that they can keep it all in house. The ethics of business is largely seen as a matter of corporate self-regulation so that pesky outsiders won’t stick their noses into corporate affairs. The September scandals suggest an entirely different ethics.

If we want ethics in business, what we need is more corporations being caught and more public outcry. For business ethics to be effective they must be pushed onto corporations against their will. Business ethics is democratic, not corporate.

What we can learn from the business events of September is that ethics cannot be left to corporations themselves. Business ethics requires a vigilant democracy where the public and its institutions will hold corporations to account for their actions.

Business ethics, to borrow a phrase, is about keeping the bastards honest.

Fewer stocks listed on the stock market are vanishing #harvard #business

Expert Interview with Noah Wieder on the benefits of owning an ATM

Cash is still king in plenty of places, which is why ATMs are more popular than ever, says Noah C. Wieder, CEO of ATM Depot .

ATM users prefer to pay with cash to avoid credit card debt and interest charges, and merchants also prefer cash users; so having an ATM nearby helps them lower their credit card processing fees.

“So it’s a win-win for merchants who either own and operate their own ATM or who contract with an IAD to operate one for them,” he adds.

Noah recently checked in to tell us about the benefits of investing in an ATM machine and give us a crash course on becoming an independent ATM deployer. Here’s what he had to say:

Tell us the story behind ATM Depot. What’s on your site? Who should be reading it?

ATM Depot caters to individuals, investors, entrepreneurs and independent ATM deployers (IAD’s) looking for a flexible, friendly, experienced and honest ATM company. We believe in transparency in an industry where we see a lot of secrets and scams .

Who can invest in an ATM machine?

Literally, anyone can invest in an ATM. Retailers; commercial landlords; city governments looking to increase revenues at parks, museums and other public places; entrepreneurs; and anyone who can count money.

The cost to enter the ATM business is amazingly low. Many ATM models can be purchased for under $2,500 including shipping. The cost of not working with an experienced ATM company is the expensive part. The cost of learning from mistakes can get expensive.

A better question is who can operate an ATM. Most investors and entrepreneurs can invest or operate an ATM business unless they have a felony criminal record or have been involved in any type of financial crime.

What are the benefits of investing in and managing ATM machines?

It’s very similar to most passive income business models. Benefits include:

  • Working your own hours
  • Excellent annual returns (even on locations that only have three or four users per day)
  • Minimal investment, relatively low risk
  • Getting to meet and work with great people
  • No more trading time for money
  • Great ROI

What considerations should someone who’s interested in investing in an ATM machine make before purchasing one?

They should read everything they can about the business. A couple of links to some of the papers I’ve authored:

Of course, I recommend my book, The Amazing Money Machine, where I explain the entire business from start to finish. ATMdepot.com also offers serious investors a private members’ area where they can get proprietary information, forms and videos that are reserved for our IADs.

Get a handle on your cash with Mint.com .

What are the disadvantages and/or risks associated with these machines?

As with any business, the biggest risk is loss of capital; however, with the ATM business that risk is minimized since the biggest investment is the ATM hardware, which is an asset that can always be moved to a new location.

Another risk is vandalism and/or theft, but inexpensive insurance is available; and in my 20+ years in the business we’ve experienced very few of those issues (but they can occur).

Machines do need to be serviced and cleaned regularly to make sure they remain in the best working order. While not usually an issue, there can be cash jams, printer jams, communication problems or electrical surges that can bring the ATM offline (a good surge protector is key).

ATMDepot.com offers toll free 24/7 tech support and most issues can be resolved over the phone, but if an ATM investor owner-operator needs more help, a field service call can be arranged quickly.

Where are the best locations for ATM machines?

This is a big question and also varies by geography.

While everyone knows that convenience stores, casinos, supermarkets and adult retailers are great locations, they are difficult to obtain.

The best locations are high traffic places where people need cash, like stores that don’t accept credit cards or where a bank might be several blocks away.

My book has an entire in-depth chapter dedicated to this topic. A good ATM company can help their IADs evaluate locations using a variety of tools including Google Maps (satellite view) to help access the area, Zillow or SearchBug Tools to hone in on certain neighborhoods and geographic characteristics to further evaluate the potential of a location.

Where do we go to purchase an ATM machine?

ATMs can be purchased from several different ATM companies; it’s important to compare features and models carefully. New laws and compliance requirements are forcing existing ATM operators to upgrade machines, and some non-compliant machines that should be recycled are showing up for sale on websites. Some machines are non-ADA compliant, some ATMs have old software and hardware that cannot be upgraded; so it’s important to purchase ATM machines from reputable firms with the most updated information on what ATM models are outdated.

I wrote an eBay guide about the five questions to ask before buying an ATM since I saw so many scams on eBay for used machines.

How are the machines stocked? Who handles stocking them?

There are several ways to load an ATM. It’s as easy as loading a napkin holder.

The person loading the ATM is called the vaulter. Vaulters could be the ATM owner, a professional independent cash vaulter, an armored car service, or a trusted third party. The important thing to remember is that if the vaulter is not consistent and lets the machine run out of cash, then the ATM owner and the store lose money and customers get upset. So vaulting is a very important component of the business.

The most costly vaulter is an armored car and a cash management service, but it’s also the most reliable. So for a very busy machine, this can be beneficial; but the ATM also requires a significant lock upgrade for armored car auditing.

The additional lock can increase the cost of the ATM by $600 to $650, which can be significant on a $2,500 machine. The least expensive solution is to have the location be the vaulter and share the revenue or pay a set per transaction fee.

What types of machine models are available?

We currently like the Hyosung and Genmega ATMs as they are fairly priced and very reliable. There are many different models, many of which suited to different applications. It’s best to work with someone from our office once a location is selected.

Recommendations can then be made based on available space, traffic estimates, cash needs, visibility, and indoor/outdoor or freestanding/through-the-wall models.

There are many questions that should be asked and answered before a specific machine is ordered by an investor. Preservation of capital, ROI, and profit potential should all be considered.

10 Inexpensive Ways to Advertise Your Small Business

Banner ads and print ads can be expensive. And they are not necessarily the best way to advertise your small or mid-size business. So to find how to get the greatest return on your advertising investment, Small Business Computing surveyed small business owners. Here’s what they had to say.

Invest in Google AdWords

Google AdWords and PPC [pay-per-click] can give you crazy amounts of traffic if you are tight with your campaign and run niche ad groups,” explained Andrew Riker an SEO specialist at WordStream. “Focused, long-tail keywords that are specific to your industry will cause the highest possible click-through rate and in-turn conversions.”

Riker adds that you don’t have to spend a lot of money to get a lot of traffic. “A small daily budget—$10-$20/day—can provide you with a large amount of traffic and in turn qualified leads, as long as the ad is relevant,” he said. If you’re new to AdWords or just want to keep up with the latest tips and info, be sure to check out Inside Adwords . Google’s official resource blog on all things AdWords.

Try Facebook Ads

“We tried print ads and banner ads, but for our money Facebook Ads provide us with the most focused consumers,” explained Chris Knollmeyer, Web manager for Carolina Rustica. “Being able to target specific demographics lets us pinpoint people we have not reached yet and provides us with a platform to reach out to them. This kind of targeting allows us to minimize extemporaneous clicks from consumers [who are] just browsing or searching for information and gets us the most for our money.”

“Facebook ads have definitely been the most successful overall,” concurred Megan LaBant Abrahamsen, the owner of Blue Star Bazaar. “I can set a small budget (less than $10 per day) and target specific customers – [by] age, gender, education and interests similar to my product categories.”

Even if people don’t immediately make a purchase because of the Facebook ad, many of them wind up “liking” her business, she said, which lets Blue Star Bazaar create a database of potential customers.

Get your Facebook Ads tips direct from the source: Facebook for Business .

Look into StumbleUpon Ads

“One of the best ways to advertise and get traffic to your website is by using StumbleUpon Ads ,” noted Chris Wise, the online marketing director at CustomerRave. “They cost as little as $0.05 a click, so for $5 you can get 100 unique visitors to your site. While the bounce rate is more often than not higher when using these ads, it’s a great way to advertise contests, giveaways and big promotions,” he said.

And if the content you are promoting proves to be popular and receives a lot of “likes,” you will start receiving free traffic from Stumbles, which can go on for months, even after you have stopped advertising.

Get Published Online

Another great way to advertise your business is to “submit articles on topics your customers may be interested in to reputable websites, such as Ezinearticles.com . Articlesbase.com . or TheFreeLibrary.com ,” said Matthew Kostanecki, a marketing specialist at Archon Systems.

“In exchange for the content, they allow you to include a couple of back links to your website. Not only does this provide you with potential traffic and leads to your business, it also helps establish you as an expert in your related field,” said Kostanecki. Can’t come up with a subject to write about? He suggests asking your customers about their biggest pains and problems.

Donate Products or Volunteer Services to a Worthy Cause

“I got the equivalent of $1,000 in advertising by building the website for the Rhode Island Rally for Recovery ,” explained Benjamin John Coleman, founder of The Origami Bonsai Company. And his investment of time really paid off—resulting in $5,000 in new business. That’s because when other vendors who participated in the Rally saw what a great job his company did building and maintaining the Rally website, they hired Coleman to help them with their websites.

Cultivate Bloggers

Find influential bloggers in your industry and ask them to review your product or service,” suggested Daniel Weaver, the president and owner of Daniel’sPromise. “Many will be happy to do so if you give them free product for them to use.”

That’s what Juppy, the maker of the Juppy Baby Walker, did. “When we started out, our company we didn’t have a lot of cash on hand to spend on advertising,” explained Mayra Sotelo, the COO for Juppy. “So we decided to seek out mom bloggers who would review The Juppy Baby Walker. This worked out great for us… because there is no better [endorsement of] our baby walker that fits in a purse than by a real mom who loves our product.”

And if you can’t find a blogger who will review and write about your product for free, there are also bloggers “who will write about your site/product/company in exchange for a fee,” noted Mike Scanlin, CEO of Born To Sell. And even with a fee, that kind of endorsement is typically more effective and less expensive than a banner ad.

Claim Local Listings on Google Places, Yahoo Local and Bing Local

“You’d be amazed at how many small businesses forget to sign up for services like Google Places, Yahoo Local, and Bing Local even though it’s free!” explained Mandy Boyle, the SEO manager for Solid Cactus. “Claim your local listing, fill out the information and take advantage of people searching for businesses in your area,” she advised.

Use Community Sites and Local Directories

Leavy uses a site called Quentin’s Friends . an invitation-only network where members can post recommendations and offers for their products and services for a very small fee. “The service is location-specific, so my ad is going out to thousands of people who are specifically in my geographic area, New York,” she said. And Leavy’s return on investment has been an impressive 6,500 percent.

Link Up with LinkedIn Ads

If you own a B2B company, a good way to reach your target audience is through LinkedIn Ads . “We are a small business and our target market is small business users,” explained Damian Raffele, vice president, marketing, AnyMeeting.

LinkedIn Ads has worked well for the company, because it allows them to target a specific audience by geography, demographics, job title or LinkedIn Group. “Being able to target users who belong to specific LinkedIn Groups…allows us to design ad copy that is tailored for them, which has resulted in great conversion rates, providing us with a great ROI on our marketing spend.”

Distribute Flyers

“If you have a small business that focuses on a particular area, flyers are a great way to advertise,” said Nathan Letourneau, co-founder of CampusBooks4Less. And they needn’t be expensive. Chances are you have someone in your company, or a friend or family member, who can help you design the flyer inexpensively (or for free) – and you can print the flyer in house or find an inexpensive printer.

As for distribution, “hire some high school or college students and have them put the flyers on parked cars, attach them to house entry doors and distribute them inside area businesses (to employees and on any bulletin boards, if allowed) and apartment complexes,” he advised. “We saw huge increases in traffic after having students distribute flyers on parked cars in our target areas.”

While not every method will work for every business, each advertising strategy is inexpensive enough that you should be able try a few to find out what works for you. Also, many of the sites mentioned, such as Google AdWords and Facebook, periodically offer advertising credits or discounts, which small business owners should use to their advantage.

Reflections on the co-creation of innovative business ideas

From Participation to Collaboration: Reflections on the co-creation of innovative business ideas

Cara Broadley, Katherine Champion, Michael Pierre Johnson, Lynn-Sayers McHattie

The Glasgow School of Art (2), University of Abertay, The Glasgow School of Art

Keywords: co-design methods; knowledge exchange; collaboration; design-led innovation

Design-led innovation interventions are predicated on the importance of establishing complex disciplinary collaborations. This paper reflects on the effects of different co-design methods to support knowledge exchange and the co-creation of new business ideas with multidisciplinary participants. It draws on data collected from sandpit style events entitled Chiasma, undertaken as part of the knowledge exchange hub, Design in Action (DiA) in which co-design methods were used to bring designers, entrepreneurs, and academics together to develop innovative business ideas in Scotland. Employing a thematic analysis of idea generation, team formation, and idea development, we suggest that a more nuanced range of methods, tools, and techniques can strengthen multidisciplinary engagement and participation. We argue that such approaches can be enhanced by designers and researchers’ shifting focus from co-design methods to supporting collaborative mindsets in knowledge exchange towards innovation.

Expert Interview with Noah Wieder on the benefits of owning an ATM

Choose an On Demand Tankless Water Heater #tankless #water #heaters, #water #heater,

Stiebel Eltron Tempra Tankless Model Selector

* Smallest recommended model is based on average winter ground water temperatures in the selected region and a flow rate of 3 gallons per minute. A larger model than specified will provided greater flow rates. Incoming water temperatures may differ depending on water source, location, season, and climate. To make certain you are choosing the appropriate model, please measure your required flow rate and incoming water temperature.

Flow Rate in GPM at 60 PSI

Choosing an appropriate model of electric tankless water heater for your home or business depends on 4 primary factors:

Incoming Water Temperature

The chart on the right is designed to offer you a general model recommendation based on the typical winter incoming water temperatures in various regions of North America. The model recommended on the chart for your area is based on a desired maximum flow rate of about 3 gallons per minute and should be regarded as the smallest recommended model for a general whole-house residential water heater – selecting a more powerful model will provide higher flow rates. Our chart and recommendations also assume that your home has enough electrical service to support the model suggested – see below.

Maximum Flow Rate Desired

Before making a decision on a tankless water heater model, you should consider the maximum flow rate of hot water you really need. Most people tend to over-estimate their simultaneous hot water demand. See the chart on the right for a few flow rate guidelines for various hot water applications in the home.

Most homes will only demand one major hot water use at a time, or a maximum of 2 flow-restricted showers, etc. Generally, a maximum flow rate of 3 GPM will be sufficient for such applications. You are encouraged to measure the flow rates at your showerhead and various outlets in the home to get a more definitive estimate of your true flow rate needs. In warmer climates, it is possible to use one of our more powerful models to run flow rates of up to 8 gallons per minute (depends on climate) and still achieve a comfortable output temperature suitable for a shower. However, in northern climates, your flow rate expectations should be significantly lower (up to 3.5 GPM), depending on your incoming water temperature.

The following chart illustrates the maximum flow rate that can be achieved with each model based on a 105F output temperature. Most people shower at a temperature of between 98 and 104F. This chart is based on a 240 volt input voltage and maximum flow rates are listed for various incoming water temperature levels. If your home or business has less than 240 volt power (208v), your maximum flow rate will be lower (please refer to the Stiebel Eltron Tempra brochure for flow rate data based on a 208 volt input).

Simply look up your incoming water temperature and desired flow rate to determine your model choice. Don’t forget that incoming water temperature may change throughout the year depending on the season.

Incoming Water Temperature

  • Generally speaking, in the above chart, areas shaded in light grey are suitable only for small point-of-use applications (a single sink for instance).
  • Areas shaded in yellow may be suitable for homes with modest hot water needs and that use flow restricted showerheads. Very careful measurement of your actual water flow rate and incoming water temperature are recommended before making a final model selection.

  • Areas shaded in red represent the best model choices for general whole-house water heating demands. Areas indicating a maximum flow rate of 4.0 gallons per minute or more are generally satisfactory for running 2 showers at a time with standard showerheads.
  • Please note that your incoming water temperature could vary significantly from other homes in your immediate area, so checking your incoming water temperature is generally a more accurate means of determining which model is best suited to your home or business.

    Desired Features

Stiebel Eltron presently offers two Tempra Series Models, the standard Tempra and the Tempra Plus. The primary difference between the 2 models is that the Tempra Plus models feature Stiebel Eltron’s exclusive Advanced Flow Control technology. This technology automatically adjusts the flow of water when the unit’s sensors detect that the flow demand is exceeding the heater’s capacity. This feature is particularly useful in cold climates and other applications where the electrical service size does not permit the installation of a larger model and it may be desirable to handle occassional high flow demands. It is also desirable where high output temperatures are required for temperature critical applications (commercial dishwashers, etc.) where flow rates are not always predictable. All Tempra Plus Series models also feature a full digital temperature setting display.

Choosing which option is best for your needs is largely only a choice of personal preference and budget. Either model series is satisfactory for general residential applications.

    Electrical Service

Your final consideration when selecting an electric tankless water heater is the electrical service to your home or business. All Stiebel Eltron tankless water heaters require 208 to 240 volts, single phase power. Since a tankless water heater works on demand, it must transfer a massive amount of heating power instantaneously to the water. Accordingly, tankless water heaters have a high peak electrical load even though they will reduce your overall electricity consumption substantially. Accordingly, consideration must be given to the number of AMPS of electrical service your home has to support the operation of the heater and other simultaneous electrical needs.

You can determine how many amps of electrical service your home has by inspecting the main breaker (the one you use to turn off power to the whole house) in your electrical panel.

Please see that chart below for important electrical specifications for each unit.

    * Breaker size and wire gauge must meet all applicable local, state, provincial, and national electrical codes for your area – these are only guidelines that will apply to most installations. Some codes require use of electrical sub-panel for installation, especially when heater is not mounted within line-of-sight of the main electrical panel. Wiring should be sized to maintain a voltage drop of less than 3% under load. Please consult your electrician for more details.

The above specifications are only guidelines. If your home is already equipped with a large number of electrical appliances, you may require a larger electrical service than the one recommended above. Please consult an electrician before placing an order.

If your home does not have the minimum household electrical service as specified for your desired model, you can still purchase a Stiebel Eltron tankless water heater, however, upgrades to your electrical service will likely be required. It is recommended that you consult your certified electrician for a quote, prior to purchasing.

Please be aware that uninstalled units returned due to a home that has inadequate electrical service may subject to a re-stocking fee. Please see our POLICIES page for more details.

So, eBay’s just bought PreyPal’s way into another 15 retailers and VeriFone. What a total waste of eBay shareholders’ funds; and, don’t any of these retailers research anything before they enter into agreements with such clunky operators?

Read about it and weep, John Donahoe.

In addition to Visa’s V.me, there is now MasterCard’s PayPass digital wallet soon to arrive; another perfectly logical extension to the real banks’ traditional, professional, payment processing systems (and you don’t have to ditch the plastic) …

Goodbye clunky PreyPal, I can’t say that it has been nice knowing you …

What does GSM mean in a cell phone?

The GSM system uses TDMA to split a frequency into time slots.

Probably the most useful thing to know about the Global System for Mobile communications (GSM) is that it is an international standard. If you travel in Europe and many other parts of the world, GSM is the only type of cellular service available. Originally, the acronym GSM stood for Groupe Spécial Mobile. a group formed by the Conference of European Posts and Telegraphs (CEPT) in 1982 to research the merits of a European standard for mobile telecommunications. Commercial service using the GSM system did not actually start until 1991. Instead of using analog service, GSM was developed as a digital system using TDMA technology.

Using TDMA, a narrow band that is 30 kHz wide and 6.7 milliseconds long is split time-wise into three time slots. Narrow band means channels in the traditional sense. Each conversation gets the radio for one-third of the time. This is possible because voice data that has been converted to digital information is compressed so that it takes up significantly less transmission space. Therefore, TDMA has three times the capacity of an analog system using the same number of channels.

    Keep Reading Below

TDMA is the access method used by GSM, as well as the Electronics Industry Alliance and the Telecommunications Industry Association for Interim Standard 54 (IS-54) and Interim Standard 136 (IS-136). GSM implements TDMA in a somewhat different and incompatible way from IS-136. Think of GSM and IS-136 as two different operating systems that work on the same processor. like Windows and Linux both working on an Intel Pentium III. GSM systems provide a number of useful features:

    • Uses encryption to make phone calls more secure
    • Data networking
    • Group III facsimile services
    • Short Message Service (SMS) for text messages and paging
    • Call forwarding
    • Caller ID
    • Call waiting
    • Multi-party conferencing

GSM operates in the 900 MHz band (890 MHz – 960 MHz) in Europe and Asia and in the 1900 MHz (sometimes referred to as 1.9 GHz) band in the United States. It is used in digital cellular and PCS -based systems. GSM is also the basis for Integrated Digital Enhanced Network (iDEN). a popular system introduced by Motorola and used by Nextel. The incredible growth of GSM is a big part of why the acronym is now commonly thought of as standing for the Global System for Mobile communications!

If you were on a cell phone in Europe, you’d be using the GSM service. Click here to learn about making international calls from a cell phone in the U.S. or see the next page for more interesting links.

I m an 18+ year Master s degreed veteran teacher of middle school and high school students and coach middle school cheerleaders. I have a beautiful 7th grade daughter who has had her struggles with mean girl stuff at times, yet we often discuss her actions and how they may have contributed in some way.

She s actually doing a Social Studies Fair project on the possibility of the word bullying overused, because of it the VERY huge disparity and widening gap of what is to be considered bullying behavior. I d love to hear what others think. There are so many ways to look at it. And having grown up in the 80 s, when bullying was definitely a concern, but probably underreported, I often wonder if things are sometimes taken too far and reported as bullying , when it just may be poor problem-solving and/or ability to cope with a tough situation that may not really fall into a category of bullying but how can we define those categories? Though, I never want to take away from the true concern of actual bullying, as we know it is a REAL concern for many.
    What do you think.

    Thank you for your time!

Bullying is social problem and should be handled with all attention required.

    Aandelen Kopen says:

Bullying is part of being at school or at the workplace. You can try to ban it but you could also try a better approach. Make it a better environment where workers or children are more dependent on eachother. Bullying should be taken care of in the psychological way, not by making more rules.

Hello, my name is Hanna and I am 17, I myself have been through bullying, and am still currently getting bullied. I am judged each and everyday for something that happened a year ago that I couldn t control. Action needs to be taken a lot more. I have often had many thoughts of suicide because the bullying got way to much for me to handle . Nothing about bullying is right, and I honestly don t think that a lot of people take it seriously until its to late. I don t think many people really understand how bad it really is and how much worse it is getting. There should really be a lot more done and a lot more people paying attention and watching students and peer carefully, maybe get them alone and talk to them and see if anything is going on. Take more precautions and be more aware and more observant. I know that is easier said than done because I never let my emotions show. I would always hide them from everyone, but that still doesn t mean someone couldn t tell that something was wrong. I may not have shown it, but people could tell when I was having a bad day. As I have said before, I just don t think people really take bullying seriously. More people should be aware of the the consequences of bullying and understand that what they say, can never be taken back, they can t take back the damage that has already been done. Making more rules against bullying doesn t mean people are going to follow these rules. Innocent children take their life, because immediate action isn t taking place. If more people start suffering the consequences of bullying and more people realize, hey maybe this is serious and we need to start paying attention to our actions, they will start to see that it s not right, and they need to stop before more consequences are being put into action.

    Chris davis says:

Why do people bully it is so wrong but people should not be juged because of what there waring or what they look like there is girl i know named mone and she killed her self because she got bullied so all the bullies out there why do you bully people have you got bullied befor if so its not ok to bully because you got bullied so people need to watch what you say

Hello, my name is Aryanna, and I myself have been bullied since elementary. All the bullying that has happened to me has lead me to self-harm, attempt suicide and push everyone away from me. No one should ever have to go through what many people (including me) have gone through. No one ever deserves to get bullied, and it can really harm someone. For those people out there that think they are alone, you aren t, I promise. Things get better, trust me.

BULLYING IS UNWANTED .Some of the people at young age could give up their life because of bullying. Their must be supervision. parents who would care about their children. One of my GREAT wish :BULLYING would end.

i just want to say i m so sorry for everyone on here who has been bullied at some point. i have not been bullied but i understand how it can affect someone i have gone through something similar to being bullied but he doesn t know he s doing it. i know its not bullying but it has similar affects that hurts. some advice that i have is stay close to your friends and to the people you love because having them is better that fighting back or falling apart. also everyone wants bullying to end but everyone should know that it wont. the one thing we can do is stop in where we are ant start from there.

    On multi-user access to your iOS device #on #multi-user #access #to #your

Have you ever wanted to share your iPhone or iPad with someone else? If you share your Mac with someone, you can each have your own account. OS X is designed for multiple users. But iOS is not.

iOS does give you restrictions. the ability to limit the type of content accessible from your device. Restrictions lets you limit access to specific apps, like Safari, FaceTime, Camera, the iTunes/iBooks store, Siri, and AirDrop. You can prevent people from installing and deleting apps, from changing privacy setting, and a lot more.

Though restrictions is powerful and needed, it does take time to set up and, once set up, there is no easy way to switch everything back to all access mode for your own personal use.

iOS also offers guided access. an accessibility feature that lets you limit a device to a single app, control which features are available. Guided access is extremely useful if you will be setting up a kiosk or distributing devices to a controlled group, such as a museum tour, or students in a classroom.

There are no doubt technical hurdles to overcome to make iOS a truly multi-user OS on the order of OS X. And some might argue that the iPhone and iPad are personal devices, not designed to be shared. But how many times has someone asked to borrow your phone to look something up or, as a parent, how many times have you wanted to give your phone/iPad to your child, perhaps for entertainment on a long car ride.

As an aside, the latest version of Android, Lollipop. ships with multi-user support built in. I can t help but imagine that engineers at Apple are working on solving this problem for iOS, as well.

In the meantime, how about this idea? Add in support for a single profile tied in to restrictions. Then tie that profile into Touch ID and Passcode.

The idea would be, let me set up my restrictions profile with all the limitations and privacy I d like, then tie that to a unique passcode. If I login with my regular passcode or my fingerprint, I get full access. If I login with my guest passcode or fingerprint, I get the restricted access version, ideal if I want to hand my phone or iPad off to someone. No worries about accessing private information or accidentally deleting something of value.

Not that I don t like the idea, but why spend resources implementing a temporary solution? Why not just implement the proper solution first?

Life Insurance With No Medical Exam

Normally, if you’re applying for life insurance you are required to submit to a medical examination with regards to issues that may affect your insurance rates. For instance, you may be liable to pay more for life insurance if, during the medical exam, a doctor finds that you have a condition that indicates that you should be in a higher risk category.

Heart problems, high cholesterol or a history of strokes are some examples of issues that might put you in a higher risk category. For many individuals seeking relief from constant worries about their health, no exam life insurance is the perfect choice.

Who else might benefit from a no exam life insurance plan?

    • Those who need immediate coverage
    • Individuals suffering from health conditions, such as cancer
    • Senior citizens

    Pre-existing Conditions

Many life insurance companies charge exorbitant fees if you have what they call a pre-existing condition which puts you in a higher risk bracket. Life insurance companies want to make more money off of you than you give them in the long term, so if they expect your death to be a drain on their company’s finances in the near future, they want you to have paid in as much as possible. Life insurance with no medical exams provides the perfect solution for individuals who would have to pay a huge amount of money for a traditional term or permanent life insurance plan. It may even be possible to get whole life insurance without a medical exam .

Of course, you have to compare the monthly rates of each. Generally no exam life insurance is more expensive than the average life insurance plan and it offers the same services. However, it’s more of a one-size-fits-all insurance plan, making it a great choice for people who do have “pre-existing conditions” like a heart condition or who are significantly older. If this describes you, a traditional life insurance plan may ask for higher rates than a no exam insurance plan

Enhanced Privacy With No Medical Exam Life Insurance

Another benefit of purchasing life insurance with no medical exam is that you can keep your medical information private. Many of us feel a little bit leery that our private information is being viewed by some insurance executive or technician in a suit with nothing but dollars on the brain.

We’d like to know that information about our bodies is kept between ourselves and trusted physicians and doctors. Additionally, no exam life insurance is great for people who don’t enjoy doctors’ offices, needles or exams. They’re simpler, they are processed much more quickly, and they leave your family with more money to help with funeral expenses.

PPTP VPN Setup Guide for a Debian OpenVZ VPS – Put Dispenser

PPTP VPN Setup Guide for a Debian OpenVZ VPS

This guide is intended for those who want to set up a PPTP VPN on OpenVZ with Debian or Ubuntu on a capable provider such as BuyVM.net. Lots of time has been spent through trial and error trying to figure it out. Insight and portions of this guide have been taken from howtogeek.com .

To verify PPP is working, run:

    It should return this:

cat: /dev/ppp: No such device or address

    1. Install the pptp server package:

    2. Edit the “pptpd.conf” configuration file:

Uncomment the localip and remoteip lines and change them to something like this:

Where the “localip” is the address of your VPS, and the remoteip are the addresses that will be handed out to the clients, it is up to you to adjust these for your network’s requirements.

    3. Edit the “pptpd-options” configuration file:

Uncomment the ms-dns lines and change them to:

Where the IP used for the ms-dns line is the DNS server for the local network your client will be connecting to. In my example, I used OpenDNS s DNS servers.

    4. Edit the chap-secrets file:

Add the authentication credentials for a user’s connection, in the following syntax:

Make sure that you separate each entry with a single tab. It could be like this:

    5. Edit the MTU settings:

Add this line to the end of the file:

    6. Allow PPTP through the firewall (iptables):

Change 11.22.33.44 to your VPS s public IP address.

    After that, type in:

    7. Restart the pptpd for the settings to take affect:

If you don’t want to grant yourself access to anything beyond the server, then you’re done on the server side.

By enabling forwarding we make the entire network available to us when we connect and not just the VPN server itself. Doing so allows the connecting client to “jump” through the VPN server, to all other devices on the network. If you don t enable forwarding, you will not be able to browse the web through your proxy.

    Edit the sysctl file:

Find the “net.ipv4.ip_forward” and uncomment it by removing the # :

You can either restart the system or issue this command for the setting to take affect:

With forwarding enabled, all the server side settings are prepared.

Here is a script to reapply iptables settings at boot (in case your server restarts/crashes/etc.) Make sure you change the IP address to your VPS address.

Hope this works well for you, if not, let me know in the comments!

i installed and configured pptpd on my VPS. when i tried to connect from my windows 7 PC by using native pptp dialer i am getting Error 806:

    on ubuntu i checked log(/var/log/messages). there i got Mar 3 15:36:02 cloud pppd[1025]: Plugin /usr/lib/pptpd/pptpd-logwtmp.so loaded.

on windows 7 i got this error message

Error 806 The VPN connection between your computer and the VPN server could not be completed. The Most common cause for this failure is that at least one internet device (for example, a firewall or a router) between your computer and the VPN server is not configured to allow Generic Routing Encapsulation (GRE) protocol packets. If the problem persists, contact your network administrator or internet Service Provider.

please help me to solve this

Setup on buyVM, but getting slow speeds

    wget test from cachefly
    Saving to: `100mb.test.1 100%[========================================================= ] 104,857,600 23.9M/s in 4.6s 2012-04-01 09:15:17 (21.6 MB/s) `100mb.test.1 saved [104857600/104857600]

Server seems quick enough, have tested different OS versions but same issue tested a trial account with a VPN provider and had no speed issues

I ll have to retest the script and update soon. I ll see then.

    #

Put a price tag on your business: A guide to business valuation

If you want to sell all or part of your business, you need to have an idea of its value. This information will help you understand the different approaches to business valuation, but you may want to seek professional guidance and advice. Prospective investors will also assess its value when they consider your proposal.

The process of determining the value is called valuation. You and the buyer or investor need to determine what you feel is an appropriate business valuation because it will be the basis for negotiating:

    • How much of your business the investor or buyer will purchase
    • How much the buyer or investor will pay (the price of the business or of its shares)
    • The return the buyer or investor can expect to earn

    Ways of valuing a business

Valuation is not an exact science, and there are different ways of valuing a business. Each of these methods is based on different assumptions and financial information, which typically results in a different value for each method. For instance, you could base a valuation on the assets of a business (how much it owns) or by taking into account projected revenues or cash flows. Investors generally prefer methods based on cash flows. It s important to know about a variety of methods because they can be useful as benchmarks to check the validity of the value and the price you determine.

    Earnings and cash flow-based methods:

    • Discounted cash flow
    • Going-concern value

    Discounted cash flow

From the investor s perspective, this is usually the most accurate and effective way to estimate a business value because it is based on future cash flows. These cash flow figures reflect the amount of money that is estimated to come into the business and will ultimately determine the investor s return on investment. The discounted cash flow method is used to answer three critical questions:

    • Value: How much is your business worth today, based on what it will earn in the future?
    • Rate of return: What is the buyer s or investor s expected rate of return, given the amount invested and your business financial projections?
    • Equity share: How much equity will the buyer or investor receive for their investment?

The discounted-cash-flow method is often preferred because it can be more accurate than other methods. Its accuracy and complexity are due to the fact that it:

    • Uses cash flows: It takes into account the projected ups and downs of revenue over a period of time.
    • Discounts the cash flows: It adjusts the cash flows by a rate that is acceptable to the investor to account for risk and the time the investor must wait for a return.
    How it works

In this method, cash flow predictions are discounted, or reduced, to adjust for the risk the investor faces and to make up for the fact that the investor could invest their money in something else.

Investors are looking to be compensated for their risk, and their benchmark rate or “discount rate” will adjust for the value of money over time. They will choose a discount rate and compare your proposal against that rate.

    Advantages and disadvantages

The discounted cash flow method allows values to be estimated even when your cash flow is fluctuating. A start-up or new venture may expect to lose money in the first years and then make money in later years. These changes in cash flow are taken into account by the discounted cash flow method.

If you use this method, keep in mind that:

    • Its accuracy depends on the accuracy of your cash flow projections. That is why your financial data and assumptions are critical.
    • It is a complex process, so you may require professional guidance.
    • It can give you detailed estimates, but it is important to remember that business valuation is not an exact science your numbers will be based on assumptions and predictions of future performance.
Value: How much is your business worth today?

Let s say financiers are considering an investment in your business, but plan to take their money out in five years. To them, your business is worth today what it can earn during those five years, plus their share of the value of the business at the end of the five years. However, future cash flow numbers and the future value of the business are unknown. The discounted cash flow method applies adjustments or “discounts” to account for those unknowns.

Using this method, the value is the total of the cash flows, adjusted or discounted, plus the value remaining (or residual value), also discounted.

Rate of return: What rate of return will the investor expect?

Investors want to calculate their rate of return. To do that they must compare the amount of the investment to the amount they will earn at the end of the investment period. But how can they know what they will earn in the future? Again, they must use the discounted cash flow projections to estimate the future value of their investment. To do so, they will need to:

    • Estimate the cash flow in the final year
    • Estimate the value of the business based on the cash flow
    • Calculate the final value of their share in the business
    • Determine their rate of return
    Value, return and exit strategy

The method used to calculate values and rates of return depends on the specific exit strategy used. Commonly-used methods include going-concern value, book value, and liquidation value.

    Going-concern value

The going-concern value method calculates your business value based on its capacity to produce a stream of cash flow in the future. The greater the cash flow your business generates in the future, the higher your business value today.

    How it works

The going concern value, like discounted cash flow, compares the current investment to the future receipts (cash inflows). This method uses the revenues of previous years to project future revenues, and it assumes those revenues will not change.

    Book Value

This value is the net worth, or shareholders equity, of your business as shown in its financial statements. At its most simplified, subtracting your liabilities from your assets will give you your business net worth or book value. Book value can be described as the historical value of an asset that, at a given time (the day it was purchased), represented the economic or market value of the asset, less its accumulated depreciation.

    How it works

To determine the book value, subtract your liabilities from the value of your assets. The difference gives you your net worth or shareholders equity. In practice, book value is seldom used in the process of securing venture capital, although it can be a realistic approach to measuring a small business net worth.

    Liquidation value

A liquidation value is assigned to a business being sold in order to satisfy its creditors. Tangible assets, such as land, usually have a liquidation value close to their market value. Inventories and accounts receivable, on the other hand, are usually valued at less than what is shown in the books.

    How it works

To determine the liquidation value, all assets are assigned distressed values, and all debts are totalled at book value. Most assets sold under duress are discounted from their fair market value. The difference between the distressed value of the assets and the actual or book value of the liabilities is referred to as the liquidation value.

The liquidation value doesn t reflect the real worth of an asset or a business; in most cases, it is substantially less than the market and book values. This method is typically used only if a business is in serious financial trouble.

Should I seek a financial advisor for help with valuation?

Business valuation is a complex task, and a financial advisor with experience in business valuation can be an invaluable asset.

    A professional valuator can:

    • Provide the experience needed to accurately determine the value of your business
    • Offer an objective view of your business worth
    • Give investors more confidence in the credibility of your valuation

    Conclusion

There is a saying in the venture capital industry: “The value of a business is only what someone is willing to pay for it.” In other words, the market, and your ability to attract investors and negotiate with them will determine the value or selling price.

Remember that many factors affect the value of your business. Seeking professional assistance can help you calculate an accurate value for your business.

Samsung Galaxy S4 Camera can t save pictures to SD card, remove microSD card write-protection, other memory issues

by Harold Hisona October 2, 2015, 10:39 am

Memory and storage problems are among the most common issues we received from Samsung Galaxy S4 (#Samsung #GalaxyS4) owners. I will address some of them in this post so if you are currently bugged by an issue or two, read on as you may find some answers.

The first issue I cited is about a unit that can t choose the SD card to be the primary storage. This issue occurs only if the device failed to read (and write) on the card. The second problem is a typical write-protection issue. Of course, the device cannot write on the SD card if it s write-protected the problem is only a few know how to remove the protection.

Read on to know more of these problems and how to tackle them in case you d encounter one in the future. If, however, you were trying to find solutions for a totally different problem, I recommend you visit our Galaxy S4 troubleshooting page where we list all issues we address each week. Find problems related to yours and try the solutions, if they won t work, then contact us through this form .

Galaxy S4 can t save on SD card

Problem. When I change my storage device on my camera from internal to the SD card and a pic goes to save it says it can be stored there and switches back just recently started doing this and then at the same time pictures that I delete from my gallery reappear on my phone .

Troubleshooting. Your microSD card may have been corrupted or already damaged that s why your phone can neither write nor read from it. The best thing to do to further troubleshoot the problem is to let your laptop or computer read it. The machine will immediately tell you if the card needs reformatting or not.

Once you inserted the card, your computer will either prompt you to open it or reformat it. If the latter pops up, it could be that the card is just corrupted and is unreadable or already damaged. Of course, if your computer can t read it, there s no way to backup the files saved in it and if you won t proceed with the format, you still can t be able to use it on your phone.

If you decided to reformat it, use the FAT32 format to make sure your phone can read it provided it s not damaged. Solving this problem will solve the issue with your deleted picture that keeps coming back.

    Remove SD card write-protection (Verizon)

Problem. Hi, I am unable to delete anything from the SD memory card under the My Files icon. When I try to delete anything I get the message saying Deleting Failed. After plugging in phone to computer with USB cord, I now get a message telling me the SD card is write-protected. There is no unlock switch on this sd card to turn off protection so I don t know what else to do.

My Samsung Galaxy S4 wants to complete an system update, but I need to clear up storage space first and am unable to because of this crazy sd memory card issue. Please help! Thanks so much.

Troubleshooting. There are several ways to remove the write-protection from your microSD card. You can remove it by changing the value of StorageDevicePolicies in your computer s registry or by using the command prompt to create a partition and reformat it. But the best and easiest way is by using the SD card adapter; there s a lock switch on the side that you can toggle and that will fix the problem.

Sorting photos by date in Galaxy S4

Problem. When I move my photos from my device storage to my sd card they get all muddled up and in the wrong order, not by time. I ve tried so so many things I just don t know what to do and it s very stressful and upsetting. Hope you can help.

Suggestion. That s one functionality Samsung should include in its stock Gallery app because for now, the app sorts photos by name and not by date. However, you can rename those files (yeah, individually) to bear the date they were taken just so they are sorted according to your preference, or you can use a third-party app that offer more sorting functions than the Gallery app like QuickPic. I hope this helps.

Galaxy S4 S Memos gone (ATT)

Problem. Received a pop up message saying not enough storage in device to open app. And I went to my storage and cleared or deleted the cache to open up memory. Now my S Memos are all gone. Everything else is the same but the notes are gone. Is there anyway to get them back?

Answer. If you haven t made a backup, then there s no way to get them back because it seems you have also deleted some data accidentally including your memos. Clearing an app s data is irreversible.

Recover deleted data after factory reset

Problem. Much to my son accidentally dead a factory reset on my phone and I have googled and searched and cannot find a way to get back any of my old things. Contact the replaceable games are replaceable but there are text messages and recordings I had that I need for court proceeding in a custody battle. And I m really hoping somebody can help me get those things back I could really use your help thank you.

Suggestion. For our level, there s not much we can do about deleted data or files, however, there are some applications online that are worth a try. I believe some of those lost files are very important to you so you might want to try programs like Yodot, Jihosoft Mobile Recovery, etc. You can actually find others by googling.

    Changing Galaxy S4 USB connection

Problem. Hi, when i plug my GS4 with laptop it start charging normally but i don t have access to MTP, to transfer files btw phone and laptop. How can i solve this issue?

Answer. This is not an issue. All you need to do is change the USB connection option and you can do so by dragging down the notification bar and tapping on Connected as a media device and choose MTP. That s it!

Galaxy S4 still can t install apps after putting in new SD card

Problem. Just added 32gb to my phone but my system still shows 16gb in one place and 32 gb elsewhere. When I try to download new apps I get a message that I don t have enough memory so I have to delete one of my existing apps.

Troubleshooting. The 32GB elsewhere is obviously your microSD card but the phone doesn t see it as the primary storage. To fix your problem, you need to move most of your downloaded apps to the SD card. Aside from apps, also move your pictures, videos and files to free up some space in your phone s internal storage (by the way, the SD card is an external storage device). After you did all these, you should be able to install new apps.

To move apps, follow these steps:

    1. From any Home screen, tap the Menu key.
    2. Tap Settings.
    3. Tap the More tab.
    4. Tap Application manager.
    5. Swipe left or right to go to the All tab.
    6. Scroll to and tap on the app you want to move.
    7. Tap Move to SD card.

Related Problem. Apparently I have no more storage space. I recently added a memory card. How can I move apps to the card so I have more space. I need to update my phone but can t until I free up space. Can you help?

Galaxy S4 can t read SD card after an update

Problem. The memory card I bought a few weeks ago isn t working since update keeps saying preparing so card removed as card it s like the phone isn t seeing it.

Troubleshooting. The update may have corrupted your SD card. It happens all the time and the worst thing is all your data and files will be lost and couldn t be recovered. The only solution is to reformat the card to make it useful again. Try using FAT32 format so the phone can easily read it.

What cloud backup would my photos have gone to?

Question. Hi, have saved pics to cloud but recently changed phone, what cloud backup would my photos have gone to? Many thanks. Debi

Answer. Hello Debi. That s actually the kind of question only you can answer. Try to remember what account you used when you backed the up. Your Google account should be the first, then your Samsung account, then the others. All you need to do is sync photos with all accounts you used with your previous phone and your photos will automatically be downloaded or synced to your phone.

Cincinnati Business Courier: Fourth Race Project Back on Track

by Chris Wetterich | Cincinnati Business Courier

A three-year-old plan to build a new apartment complex and garage in a key corner of downtown Cincinnati is back on track after years of delays, political saber-rattling, review and revision.

Later this summer, the Cincinnati Center City Development Corp. will demolish Pogue’s Garage at Fourth and Race streets and begin building a new garage, the podium for a $106 million, 225-apartment luxury tower to be built and owned by Indianapolis-based Flaherty Collins Properties. Demolition will take three to five months with construction of the 14-story building expected to begin by the end of the year.

The project will activate a sector of downtown that has some residential presence already with apartment and condo buildings on the west side of Fourth and Fifth streets, and, just as important, add much-needed supply to a Cincinnati housing market with pent-up demand.

“That’s a lot of bodies introduced to a part of town that straddles between Fountain Square and (west) Fourth Street where there is residential. There’s sort of a gap there, and this fills it in pretty well,” said Adam Gelter, 3CDC’s executive vice president for development. “Fourth Street in general, especially as you come east, is one of the better streets in town from an urban feel, but it isn’t tremendously active, particularly at night. The tenants on the first floor and the people above will bring a little bit more life to the street.”

Jim Crossin . Flaherty Collins Properties vice president for development, said the company is happy with how plans for Fourth and Race turned out.

“We think the project will be a great success,” Crossin said. “3CDC — they operate a lot of parking facilities. They’ll also take care of the loan and lease of the ground-floor retail, which is in their area of expertise. Our business is multifamily development. It works out great that they’re doing those two portions of the project.”

The company was not fazed by the long process of dealing with a change in city administration and shifting priorities.

“Almost everything we do is a public-private partnership. The public side of most of our deals usually involves the local municipality,’’ Crossin said. “We like them because in the end, it’s usually an opportunity to develop a special project downtown where projects aren’t easy to get done. It takes often working through the political process to get it done.”

Like other recent, brand-new downtown apartment projects, nearly half of the building will be a parking garage. 3CDC will build seven stories – first-floor commercial space, plus six floors containing 700 parking spaces – and Flaherty Collins Properties will build seven stories of apartments on top of that. Some parking will be reserved for residents while other spaces will replace those lost in the demolition of Pogue’s Garage.

The apartment tower will be C-shaped with an amenity deck on the eighth floor that includes a grilling area and resort-style outdoor pool.

Crossin said hiding the parking garage is an important architectural feature of the building. Atlanta-based Preston Partnerships, which designed the second phase of the Banks, will design the building, while Turner Construction will manage the construction.

“There’s screening on the garage to mask that it’s a parking garage,” Crossin said. “We wanted it to not look like a residential building sitting on top of a garage. We wanted a cohesive design that fits into the context of downtown.”

Flaherty Collins Properties aimed for a ratio of 1.1 to 1.2 parking spaces per unit. Asked whether he believes additional downtown apartment towers will need as much parking in the future, Crossin said that while the streetcar could reduce parking needs, “We’re still in the Midwest where you may need to use your car less, but everybody needs a car.”

If residents become less dependent on their cars, Crossin said, the parking spaces could be used by others.

“If you add more jobs downtown, which definitely seems to be going in a positive direction, those people will need places to park.”

The project is “addition by subtraction,” Gelter said. It gets rid of a hideous parking garage that empties via ramps on city streets. 3CDC expects to open the new garage before the overall project is complete, as it did with the 84.51 center at Sixth and Race streets.

“If nothing went back, it would be better than it is today,” Gelter said.

    First-floor retail also was key.

“As we build around the country doing urban mixed-use, our residents – the No. 1 thing they want is a walkable, urban environment,” Crossin said. We wanted to have street-level retail space that serves as an amenity to residents.”

Flaherty Collins Properties has developed 50 properties and 8,000 units, with many of their projects in Indiana.

The project will inject several hundred new residents in an area of downtown with a lot of longtime retailers, such as Koch Sporting Goods and Bromwell’s. Both developers and government leaders view downtown as having more demand than supply, with Downtown Cincinnati Inc. reporting an occupancy rate of 97 percent for residential units in 2015.

Even as Flaherty Collins Properties worked through the Fourth and Race deal, it considered other Cincinnati projects. It has talked to some downtown parking lot owners who other developers have reported have been reluctant to sell or join developments as equity partners.

“We’re getting a subsidy from the city. The land is being contributed also,” Crossin said. “If it were Joe Smith with a parking lot that’s very valuable land worth several million bucks, it doesn’t work. If rents can continue to rise, we’ll reach a point where those deals do work without any help. I think the city’s hope is that they’re priming the pump.”

Flaherty Collins Properties plans to keep looking for other projects.

“We think Cincinnati’s a fantastic market downtown,” Crossin said. “We think there’s more demand (downtown) than there are new high-end projects currently.”

    The Lowdown On Penny Stocks

Successful companies aren’t born, they’re made. They have to work through the ranks like everyone else. Unfortunately, some investors believe that finding the next “big thing” means scouring through penny stocks in hopes of finding the next Microsoft or Wal-Mart. As we’ll explain in this article, this is probably not the best strategy.

    More from Investopedia:

What Exactly Is a Penny/Micro-Cap Stock?
In this article we’ll use the terms “penny stocks” and “micro-cap stocks” interchangeably. Technically, micro-cap stocks are classified as such based on their market capitalization while penny stocks are looked at in terms of their price. Definitions vary, but in general a stock with a market capitalization between $50 and $300 million is a micro-cap. (Less than $50 million is a nano-cap.) According to the Securities & Exchange Commission (SEC) any stock under $5 is a penny stock. Again, definitions can vary, some set the cut-off point at $3, while others consider only those stocks trading at less than $1 to be a penny stock. Finally, we consider any stock that is trading on the Pink Sheets or OTCBB to be a penny stock.

The main thing you have to know about penny/micro stocks is that they are much riskier than regular stocks. For instance, junk bonds (bonds with a rating lower than BBB) are considered a much higher risk than those of investment grade (bonds with a rating higher than BBB). In the world of stocks the equivalent comparison is penny stocks vs. blue-chip.

What’s the Problem with These Stocks?
What makes penny stocks risky? Four major issues arise when you decide to buy these securities:

Lack of Information Available to the Public
One thing we always preach is that the key to any successful investment strategy is acquiring enough tangible information to make informed decisions. For micro-cap stocks, information is much more difficult to find. Companies listed on the pink sheets are not required to file with the SEC and are thus not as publicly scrutinized or regulated as the stocks represented on the NYSE and the Nasdaq exchanges; furthermore, much of the information available about micro-cap stocks is typically not from a credible source.

    No Minimum Standards
Stocks on the OTCBB and Pink Sheets do not have to fulfill minimum standard requirements to remain on the exchange. Sometimes, this is why the stock is on one of these exchanges. Once a company can no longer maintain its position on one of the major exchanges, the company moves one of these smaller exchanges. While the OTCBB does require companies to file timely documents with the SEC, the Pink Sheets has no such requirement. Minimum standards act as a safety cushion for some investors and as a benchmark for some companies.

    Lack of History
Many of the companies considered to be micro-cap stocks are either newly formed or approaching bankruptcy. These companies will generally have a poor track record or none at all. As you can imagine, the lack of histories of companies only magnifies the difficulty in picking the right stock.

    Liquidity
When stocks don’t have much liquidity, two problems arise: first, there is the possibility that the stock you purchased cannot be sold. If there is a low level of liquidity, it may be hard to find a buyer for a particular stock, and you may be required to lower your price until it is considered attractive by another buyer. Second, low liquidity levels provide opportunities for some traders to manipulate stock prices, which is done in many different ways – the easiest is to buy large amounts of stock, hype it up and then sell it after other investors find it attractive (also known as pump and dump).

    The Problem for Investors
Penny stocks have been a thorn in the side of the SEC for some time because micro-cap stocks’ lack of available information and poor liquidity make these groups of stocks an easy target for fraudsters. There are many different ways these people will try to part you from your money, but here are two of the most common:

Biased Recommendations Some micro-cap companies pay individuals to recommend the company stock in different media, i.e. newsletters, financial television and radio shows. You may receive spam e-mail trying to persuade you to purchase particular stock. All e-mails, postings and recommendations of that kind should be taken with a grain of salt. Look to see if the issuers of the recommendations are being paid for their services as this is a giveaway of a bad investment and make sure that any press releases aren’t given falsely by people looking to influence the price of a stock.

Off-Shore Brokers Under regulation S, the SEC permits companies selling stock outside the U.S. to foreign investors to be exempt from registering stock. These companies will typically sell the stock at a discount to offshore brokers who, in turn, sell them back to U.S. investors for a substantial profit. By cold calling a list of potential investors (investors with enough money to buy a particular stock) and providing attractive information, these dishonest brokers will use high-pressure “boiler room” sales tactics to persuade investors to purchase stock.

    Buying These Stocks
Two common fallacies pertaining to penny stocks are that many of today’s stocks were once penny stocks and that there is a positive correlation between the number of stocks a person owns and his or her returns.

Investors who have fallen into the trap of the first fallacy believe Wal-Mart, Microsoft and many other large companies were once penny stocks that have appreciated to high dollar values. Many investors make this mistake because they are looking at the “adjusted stock price”, which takes into account all stock splits. By taking a look at both Microsoft and Wal-Mart, you can see that the respective prices on their first days of trading were $28 and $25 even though the prices adjusted for splits is $0.09722 and $0.02444 (at time of writing). Rather than starting at a low market price, these companies actually started pretty high, continually rising until they needed to be split.

The second reason that many investors may be attracted to penny stocks is the conception that there is more room for appreciation and more opportunity to own more stock. If a stock is at $0.10 and rises by $0.05, you will have made a 50% return. This together with the with the fact that a $1,000 investment can buy 10,000 shares convinces investors that micro cap stock are a rapid surefire way to increase profits. For some reason, people think of the upside but forget about the downside. A $0.10 stock can just as easily go down $0.05 and lose half its value. Most often, these stocks do not succeed, and there is a high probability that you will lose your entire investment.

    Conclusion
Sure, some companies on the OTCBB and Pink Sheets might be good quality, and many OTCBB companies are working extremely hard to make their way up to the more reputable Nasdaq and NYSE. However, the flip-side is that there many good opportunities in stocks that aren’t trading for pennies. You need to understand that this is a high risk area that isn’t suitable for all investors. If you can’t resist the lure of micro-caps, make sure you do extensive research and understand what you are getting into.

Cisco ASDM GUI tips and tricks for managing your Cisco ASA

Cisco’s Adaptive Security Device Manager (ASDM) is the GUI tool used to manage the Cisco ASA security appliances. In this blog I’ll reveal to you some of my favorite tips, tricks and secrets found inside ASDM. If you haven’t dealt with it before, ASDM is a free configuration, monitoring and troubleshooting management tool that comes with the ASA. In a nutshell, ASDM will manage all the features of the ASA appliance including FW, IPS and VPN. Unlike its big brother Cisco Security Manager (CSM), ASDM is made to configure a standalone ASA one at a time. CSM is the tool you would use to manage and share policy across multiple ASA’s, routers, and IPS appliances.

First, installing the tool. You can download ASDM from cisco.com or from your ASA itself. You can then run it inside a browser or download the ASDM launcher so it runs as its own application on your PC. I highly recommend ASDM launcher as the way to go. The ASDM launcher works for both Windows and MAC OSX (requires ASDM version 6.4.5 or later). Once launched it will look like the below image. You fill out the info and away you go.

A few secrets about ASDM launcher. First, to get the MAC launcher working you must install it directly from your ASA using a web browser. Currently, there is not a downloadable .dmg file on cisco.com, only a .msi file for windows.

Second, you see that cool “run in demo mode” checkbox? This can be a very handy feature and is available to everyone. To enable it, check the box and click on the link it provides. This will take you to cisco.com where you will need to download the ASDM demo .msi package. It will look like this:

Once installed, ASDM can then be used in a offline demo mode on a windows or mac computer. Demo mode provides you with several configuration types to choose from so you can make it pretend to be an ASA FW or a ASA FW with IPS or a ASA with SSLVPN, etc. The ASDM demo mode even models event logs. All in all ASDM demo mode gives you the experience of configuring and monitoring a live ASA.

Which brings me to another ASDM secret, demo mode is designed for windows but will also work on MACs. This is not something supported by Cisco or found in there docs. It is more of a hack, but a useful one for those (like me) that don’t like to run fusion on their MACs. Here is how you get it to work on a MAC running Lion:

-First, On your MAC install the ASDM launcher by connecting to an ASA via a web browser and clicking install launcher.

-Second, download and install ASDM demo .msi on a Windows PC.

-Next, Copy the Demo folder contents from C:\Program Files\Cisco Systems\ASDM to your MAC.

-On your MAC, open the folder the launcher app is in (usually applications\Cisco) and right click on the launcher app. Now click show package contents

-A new finder window will open. Navigate to /Applications/ASDM/Cisco ASDM-IDM.app/Contents/Resources/Java/demo

-Finally, copy the contents of the windows demo folder into this folder. Now Mac launcher demo should work great!

Here is a screenshot of ASDM demo mode on a Mac:

And here it is opened up:

Now that we have ASDM installed here are some quick tips.

    • Need to see if there are upgrades for your specific ASA type and version? Use the check for updates tool in ASDM. This software update wizard is much quicker and error free than going to cisco’s website downloading the images then uploading them to the ASA and configuring it to use them. This can all now be done with about 4 clicks right from ASDM. Huge timesaver!

    • Need to quickly see in/out throughput on ASA interfaces? On homepage click on an interface and below it will show the input and output kbps.
    • Need to quickly see your VPN sessions and their details? On homepage view the VPN sessions and click on details to see all the info about your sessions.
    • Packet Tracer is a must use tool for ASA admins. If you haven’t heard about it yet see my previous blog. Packet tracer lets you model how the ASA will react to certain traffic types moving through it. The new feature you need to know about is now tracer can model traffic based on usernames and FQDNs. Stuff like this:

    • Need to send an alert message to your clientless sslvpn users? Under tools you’ll find just such a feature. You can send any alert message you want to your users.
    • Need to get your ASA configured fast? Need to capture packets off the ASA quickly? Use the ASDM wizards! They save you time and eliminate common mistakes, especially for VPN setup. In this case wizards are not for dummies. There are all sorts of wizards in ASDM:

Can’t find where in ASDM to configure something? Find it quickly using the look for tool. You can find it on the ASDM toolbar. Just type in a keyword or two of what you are looking for and the ASDM assistant will take you there. Here is an example:

    • To speed up firewall rule creation use the drag and drop of objects. You can quickly drag and drop objects and service objects into your firewall rule table. If the object table is not open goto view/services to open it.
    • Need to find where an object is being used? Right click on the object and select where used. You will see output like this:
    • Need to put in a temporary rule that auto-expires after a certain time? Or maybe a rule that expires and only allows traffic during business hours for contractors? Use the time-based option in your firewall rules under advanced options on a rule. It looks like this:
    • Need to quickly add NAT to a server or any host object? Use the new object based NAT. This can be a huge timesaver.
    • Need to find botnet and other malware activity quickly? Turn on the botnet traffic filter license on your ASA and you’ll see all sorts of useful info on malicious traffic. Here is a look at just a couple of the botnet monitoring panels.
    • Think you might have a slow or broken connection to your authentication server? You can quickly check the server to ASA performance from your ASDM monitoring/properties/aaa server view. Great tool to help troubleshoot authentication slowness or other erradic behavior. It will look like this:

Need to see who is currently logged in to manage the ASA? Need to kick them off? You can do both from the Monitoring Properties Device Access ASDM/HTTPS/Telnet/SSH Sessions screen. Like this:

    • Need to troubleshoot the ASA connections? Need to parse the ASA logs real-time? The ASDM Log viewer under monitoring is a nice tool for just such activities. It is best suited to near or real-time log parsing. A few of the really cool tools are create rule, show rule, whois and dns lookup. Any of these can be accessed by right clicking on a log message. Again can be a big timesaver.

Well, there are some of my favorite ASDM tips. If you have some of your own to share please post them. If you have any questions let me know.

The opinions and information presented here are my PERSONAL views and not those of my employer. I am in no way an official spokesperson for my employer.
