    Synovial Fluid Analysis #synovial #fluid #analysis, # #2006 #21st #abnormal #abnormally #activities

    Synovial Fluid Analysis

Synovial fluid analysis is a group of tests that examine joint (synovial) fluid. The tests help diagnose and treat joint-related problems.

    Alternative Names

Joint fluid analysis; Joint fluid aspiration

    How the test is performed

A sample of synovial fluid is needed for this test. Synovial fluid is normally a thick, straw-colored liquid found in small amounts in joints, bursae, and tendon sheaths.

After the area is cleaned, the health care provider will insert a sterile needle through the skin and into the joint space. Once in the joint, fluid is drawn through the needle into a sterile syringe.

The fluid sample is sent to the laboratory. The laboratory technician will check the sample’s color and clarity, and then place it under a microscope to check it for red and white blood cells, crystals (in the case of gout), and bacteria. In addition, there may be a chemical analysis, and if infection is a concern, a sample will be cultured to see if any bacteria grow.

How to prepare for the test

Normally, no special preparation is necessary, but contact your health care provider before the test to make sure. Tell your doctor if you are taking blood thinners, as they can affect test results.

    How the test will feel

Occasionally, the health care provider will first inject local anesthesia with a small needle, which will sting. The aspiration is done with a larger needle and may also cause some pain. The procedure usually lasts less than one minute.

    Why the test is performed

The test can help diagnose the cause of pain or swelling in joints. Removing the fluid can also help relieve joint pain.

This test may be used to diagnose:

    • Gout
    • Infection
    • Other inflammatory joint conditions
    • Joint injury
    • Osteoarthritis

    What abnormal results mean

Abnormal joint fluid may look cloudy or abnormally thick.

Blood in the joint fluid may be a sign of injury inside the joint or a body-wide bleeding problem. An excess amount of normal synovial fluid can also be a sign of osteoarthritis.

    What the risks are

    • Infection of the joint — unusual but more common with repeated aspirations
    • Bleeding into the joint space

    Special considerations

Ice or cold packs may be applied to the joint for 24 to 36 hours after the test to reduce the swelling and joint pain. Depending on the exact problem, you can probably resume your normal activities after the procedure. Talk to your health care provider to determine what activity is most appropriate for you.

Magic Jack: A great deal with a few limitations

You asked for it, you got it.

The gurus in the Web analytics department regularly furnish us with a list of popular terms plugged into the “Search” bar at It’s a useful tool, letting us know what readers are most interested in when they come to the site. One product in particular always makes the top-ten list of most-searched terms for electronics: the Magic Jack.

The Magic Jack, which costs $20 for the device and $20 a year for service, promises to “save hundreds, even thousands of dollars” by making your monthly phone bill disappear.” Quite a claim, so we added the Magic Jack to our tests of a slew of “as seen on TV” products, including the Slap Chop. ShamWow. Snuggie. and PedEgg.

The surprising result: Unlike most of the products hawked during late-night programming, our tests found that the Magic Jack actually works and could save you money—if you don’t mind a few drawbacks.

The Magic Jack works by plugging into the USB port of your computer, acting as an adapter for your home phone line. Calls are placed over the Internet—a VOIP service like Vonage or Skype, but less expensive—so you must have broadband Internet access and your computer must be on to make and receive calls. (Messages go to voicemail when the computer is off.)

Our tester made dozens of calls with Magic Jack over several days. Calls went through with no problems, and voice quality was generally clear, though less so than with a good corded phone. Some interference occurred when the tester tried talking while downloading a large file or playing an online game. If you can live with that, we think the Magic Jack is a great deal.

Update 1/06/10. A few extra caveats about the MagicJack— (1) You can’t use your current phone number (though the company says they’re working on it) and you should check if you can use MagicJack with your area code. (2) MagicJack is ad supported, and its end user license agreement states it may analyze the phone numbers you call in order to improve the relevance of the ads. (Thanks, Paul) (3) In case of power outages, we recommend keeping on hand a corded land-line phone or at least a cell phone for emergency calls.—Ed.

Wrightslaw – Functional Behavioral Assessments: What? Why? How? Who? by Stephen Starin,

    Functional Behavioral Assessments:
What, Why, When, Where, and Who?
    Stephen Starin, Ph.D.

The recent amendments to IDEA are final. School districts are now required to conduct functional behavioral analyses of problem behaviors, under certain circumstances.

Unfortunately, IDEA does not provide specific guidelines regarding the conduct of a functional behavioral assessment. Each school district is left to its own devices when interpreting the guidelines and may opt for lower quality standards.

Below are my comments on conducting a functional behavioral assessment (FBA). These comments are based upon my formal training as a behavior analyst and over 20 years experience working with children, adolescents, and adults with serious problem behaviors. I’ve tried to avoid technical jargon for ease of discussion.

What is a “Functional Behavioral Assessment”?

The term “Functional Behavioral Assessment ” comes from what is called a “Functional Assessment” or “Functional Analysis” in the field of applied behavior analysis. This is the process of determining the cause (or “function”) of behavior before developing an intervention. The intervention must be based on the hypothesized cause (function) of behavior.

    Why Do Functional Behavioral Assessments?

Failure to base the intervention on the specific cause (function) very often results in ineffective and unnecessarily restrictive procedures.

For example, consider the case of a young child who has learned that screaming is an effective way of avoiding or escaping unpleasant tasks. Using timeout in this situation would provide the child with exactly what he wants (avoiding the task) and is likely to make the problem worse, not better. Without an adequate functional behavioral assessment, we would not know the true function of the young childs screaming and therefore may select an inappropriate intervention.

How Do You Determine the Cause or Function of Behavior?

There are three ways of getting at the function (cause) of the behavior: (a) interviews and rating scales,
    (b) direct and systematic observation of the person’s behavior, and
    (c) manipulating different environmental events to see how behavior changes. The first two are generally referred to as functional assessments whereas the third is generally referred to as a functional analysis.

Several different interviews and rating scales have been developed to try to get at the function (cause) of behavior. However, reliability is usually poor and these should be used only as a starting point for systematic and direct observation of the persons behavior. Relying exclusively on interviews and rating scales should never be considered a functional assessment. Besides having poor reliability, it would never hold up in court with an expert witness.

A more reliable method involves directly observing the person’s behavior in his or her natural environment and analyzing the behaviors antecedents (environmental events that immediately precede the problem behavior) and consequences (environmental events that immediately follow the problem behavior).

    Types of Problem Behavior

Problem behavior typically falls into one or more of three general categories: (a) behavior that produces attention and other desired events (e.g. access to toys, desired activities),
    (b) behavior that allows the person to avoid or escape demands or other undesired events/activities, and
    (c) behavior that occurs because of its sensory consequences (relieves pain, feels good, etc.). The antecedents and consequences are analyzed to see which function(s) the behavior fulfills. Problem behavior can also serve more than one function, further complicating the matter. The interview, combined with direct observation of the behavior is what most people use in determining the function of the behavior. This is fine when the data collected on the antecedents and consequences is clear. Most of the time this is sufficient in determining the behaviors function(s).

    Systematic Manipulation of Environment

In some cases, however, direct observation does not give a clear picture of the behaviors functions and systematically manipulating various environmental events becomes necessary. The most common way of systematically manipulating the environment is to put the person in several different situations and carefully observe how the behavior changes.

For example, to determine the function of screaming, we could arrange for attention to be given to the child each time she screams and measure how frequently screaming occurs. We could also make demands on the child, terminating them each time she screams and measure how frequently it occurs. In addition, we could leave the child alone and measure how often screaming occurs. If screaming is more frequent when attention is given, we hypothesize that it occurs to get attention. If screaming is more frequent when demands are made, we can assume that screaming has served to let the person escape or avoid demands. Finally, if screaming is more frequent when left alone, we can assume that it is occurring because of its sensory consequences. This third method should be reserved only for situations in which the functions of behavior are not clear through systematic and direct observation.

    What About Qualifications and Training?

An important question is “Who should be involved in the functional behavioral assessment?” The interview is important in gathering preliminary information that will guide later direct observation. As such, it is important to talk to the people who know the child the best: parents, teachers and significant others.

Direct observation should be carried out only by a person who has been thoroughly trained on collecting and analyzing this type of information. Directly manipulating environment events should be conducted only by a well-trained behavior analyst or someone else with a high degree of training and experience conducting these manipulations for they can pose danger to the person if not done correctly.

As can be seen, a functional behavioral assessment is more than a group of people sitting around a table trying to determine the cause. Although it is important to gather information from significant people in the persons life, it is not enough.

Someone knowledgeable about behavior must be in the classroom and/or family home directly observing and measuring the behavior. Although this takes time, it is usually time well spent because the intervention is more likely to be effective than one developed without careful consideration of the behaviors function(s).

    Dont Waste Valuable Time!

Time is precious. Time should not be wasted on interventions (behavioral or otherwise) when there is no evidence that this particular intervention is likely to work, for this particular child, in this particular situation.

PC Trouble? How to Check for Memory Problems in Windows

Is Windows misbehaving? One potential culprit you may not immediately think to check is faulty memory. Here’s how to do it.

Is Windows misbehaving? Maybe it’s freezing, crashing, or just not performing up to snuff. Diagnosing a general problem like this can be challenging. It could be software. It could be hardware. But one potential culprit you may not immediately think of is faulty memory.

RAM chips can go bad just like any other physical component. Fortunately, this is one piece of hardware you can scrutinize by running a memory diagnostic. If your memory passes the test, you can rule out this problem. If it fails, you know one of your RAM modules likely needs to be replaced.

To scan your memory, you can use Microsoft’s free Windows Memory Diagnostic, which runs a variety of tests on your PC’s RAM to see if everything is in working order. It’s built into all versions of Windows from the past several years, including Windows 7, Windows 8/8.1, and Windows 10. And it works the same in each version. Let’s give it a whirl.

First, press Win+R. At the Open field in the Run window, type mdsched.exe and click OK. Up pops the opening screen for the Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool.

Certain apps won’t work with the upcoming version of iOS unless they’re updated. More

  • Alcohol and Drug Problems-Topic Overview #adolescent #alcohol #use, #alcohol #abuse, #alcohol #addiction,

Alcohol and Drug Problems – Topic Overview

The overuse or abuse of alcohol (alcoholism ) or other drugs is called substance abuse. It can cause or worsen many medical problems and can destroy families and lives.

If you think you may have a problem with drugs or alcohol, take a short quiz to evaluate your symptoms:

Alcohol abuse causes over 100,000 deaths in the United States and Canada each year. It is the drug most commonly abused by children ages 12 to 17. Alcohol-related car crashes are the leading cause of death in teenagers. People who drink alcohol are more likely to engage in high-risk sexual behavior. have poor grades or job performance, use tobacco products, and experiment with illegal drugs. Alcohol and drug use may be an unconscious attempt at self-treatment for another problem, such as depression .

You have an alcohol problem if your use of alcohol interferes with your health or daily living. You develop alcoholism if you physically or emotionally depend on alcohol to get you through your day.

Long-term heavy drinking damages the liver. nervous system. heart. and brain. It can lead to high blood pressure. stomach problems. medicine interactions, sexual problems, osteoporosis. and cancer. Alcohol abuse can also lead to violence, accidents, social isolation, jail or prison time, and problems at work and home.

Symptoms of an alcohol problem include personality changes, blackouts, drinking more and more for the same “high,” and denial of the problem. A person with an alcohol problem may gulp or sneak drinks, drink alone or early in the morning, and suffer from the shakes. He or she may also have family, school, or work problems or get in trouble with the law because of drinking.

The use of alcohol with medicines or illegal drugs may increase the effects of each.

Alcohol abuse patterns vary. Some people drink and may be intoxicated (drunk) every day. Other people drink large amounts of alcohol at specific times, such as on the weekend. It is common for someone with an alcohol or drug problem to call in sick for work on Monday or Friday. He or she may complain of having a virus or the flu. Others may be sober for long periods and then go on a drinking binge that lasts for weeks or months.

Someone with alcohol dependence may suffer serious withdrawal symptoms. such as trembling, delusions. hallucinations. and sweating. if he or she stops drinking suddenly (“cold turkey”). After alcohol dependence develops, it becomes very hard to stop drinking without outside help. Medical detoxification may be needed.

Drug abuse includes the use of illegal drugs-such as marijuana. methamphetamines. cocaine. heroin. or other “street drugs”-and the abuse of legal prescription and nonprescription drugs. Some people use drugs to get a “high” or to relieve stress and emotional problems.

Drugs like ecstasy (MDMA), ketamine, GHB, Rohypnol. and LSD, which are known as “club drugs,” may be found at all-night dances, raves, trances, or clubs. The use of club drugs accounts for increasing numbers of drug overdoses and emergency room visits. Inhalants like nitrous oxide may also be used at these clubs. Drugs come in different forms and can be used in different ways. They can be smoked, snorted, inhaled, taken as pills, put in liquids or food, put in the rectum or the vagina. or injected with a needle. Teens and young adults may be at risk for becoming victims of sexual assault or violent behavior in situations where these drugs are used.

Some nonprescription medicines, such as cold medicines that have dextromethorphan as an ingredient, are being abused by teens and young adults as a way to get a “high.” Glue, shoe polish, cleaning fluids, and aerosols, are common household products with ingredients that can also be used to get a “high.”

In the United States and Canada, approximately 40% of adults will use an illegal drug at some time during their lives. This does not include the use of alcohol or prescription medicines. Many people abuse more than one illegal substance at a time.

Drug dependence or addiction occurs when you develop a physical or emotional “need” for a drug. You are unable to control your use of a drug despite the negative impact it has on your life. You may not be aware that you have become dependent on a drug until you try to stop taking it. Drug withdrawal can cause uncomfortable and sometimes dangerous symptoms. The usual treatment is to gradually reduce the dose of the drug until you can completely stop using it.

    High-risk groups

Some groups of people are more likely than others to have problems related to alcohol or drug abuse. These groups include:

    • Teenagers and young adults. Approximately one-half of all high school seniors in the U.S. admit to having used alcohol or an illegal drug. Substance abuse in this age group increases the risk of involvement in crime, high-risk sexual behavior, accidents, and injuries. Teens that use alcohol and drugs are more likely to have poor school performance and have higher dropout rates. For more information, see the topic Teen Alcohol and Drug Abuse .
    • Women.
      • Although women are less likely than men to abuse alcohol, they are more likely to have alcohol-related health problems, such as liver disease .
      • Women are more likely to have problems with prescription medicines. More than two-thirds of all tranquilizers are prescribed for women. Tranquilizers, sedatives, pain medicines, and amphetamines are abused most often by women.
      • Alcohol and drug abuse in women increases the risk of developing other health problems, such as osteoporosis or depression .
      • Women who abuse alcohol and drugs attempt suicide four times more frequently than nonabusers.
    • Adults older than age 65. Drug abuse in this age group is a problem because of the high number of prescription medicines and the lack of coordination between doctors. Signs of alcohol or drug abuse may be mistaken for other disease problems or simply overlooked as a symptom of “aging.” Many older adults “self-medicate” with alcohol to help relieve sleep problems, depression. and other problems. Alcohol abuse is more common than drug abuse in older adults. Alcohol contributes to car crashes and other types of severe injury in this group of people. Urgent Review on TVT, TVT-Secur, TVTO & TOT Medical Devices including Synthetic Flat Graft Surgical Mesh
Target The Prime Minister Rt Hon David Cameron MP and Health Secretary Andrew Lansley MP
    Commenced 23 January 2011
Sponsored by TVT Messed up Mesh (TVT Mum)

We want the TVT, TVT-O and TOT medical devices and mesh grafts for hernia repairs, stress incontinence, prolapse, bladder and bowel disorders to be stopped and taken off the market.

Article Serious Concerns with our Surgeons in the UK and the Lax Support from the Governing Bodies NICE and the MHRA

An urgent review is required on the medical devices TVT, TVTO, TOT and the use of mesh graft for hernia repair surgery plus the Governing Bodies NICE and the MHRA who regulate these medical devices.

The polypropylene surgical synthetic mesh used in the medical devices is the source of the problem and we want this surgery stopped. Many people around the UK are finding it extremely difficult to contact an experienced surgeon to treat mesh related complications and unfortunately many inexperienced surgeons are going ahead with what appears to be guess work surgery and making matters worse for their patients.

It is unbelievable to realize that one piece of mesh can cause such devastation not only to our health but it has also affected our quality of life. There are people who have lost their homes, careers, marriages, family and friends.

The greedy practices of the pharmaceutical companies, the un-educated on these medical devices, egos getting in the way of good surgical practice and also through ignorance from our governing bodies they have allowed these products to be used and it still continues today.

This petition is not just for sufferers to sign, we need everyone to sign it, as one lady said to me the whole globe should be signing it Please make her wish come true she is in so much pain and discomfort at this time along with many thousands of people.

Helpful advice for signing the Petition
