Being a business analyst is mentally demanding. Every day, you face many challenges and responsibilities. Business analysts must brainstorm and form effective solutions to business problems. In the 1970s and 1980s, IT projects sought to automate repetitive tasks and convert records to electronic data for storage. In the late 1980s and 1990s, companies evolved their IT systems in an attempt at more savings or better service. The development of systems with unclear objectives, unmanaged expectations and unrealistic business cases led to the failure. Sometimes systems were developed only to follow the latest trend of technology. Business users grew steadily more frustrated with these barriers that limited their capacity to make change promptly, and as technology evolved, they began to buy and build localized systems themselves. This left many businesses with hundreds of systems linking in an unmanaged manner without real documentation. During this period, the systems analyst role evolved to the business analyst. The new role requires more than documenting process and applying technological expertise.

But if you’re still not quite convinced, here’s a deeper exploration of the question, ‘Why study business?’

First, it’s important to recognize that there are many different types of business degrees to choose from, offering different specializations and benefits, and applicable to people at different stages of development and with very different career goals.

Types of business degrees

The term ‘business degrees’ is typically understood to include a fairly wide group of courses, some highly specialized and others more interdisciplinary; some more academic and others primarily focused on practical professional development. You can categorize types of business degrees by level (ie. undergraduate, graduate, professional), and also by subject focus. Some of the areas of study likely to be covered by different types of business degrees, either directly or as supplementary elements, include:

At undergraduate level, and on some graduate-level business degrees, students are able to gain a foundation in many of these aspects of the business world, before choosing a specialization. Meanwhile MBA (Master of Business Administration) and Executive MBA programs are targeted at those who have already gained significant professional experience, and typically have more of a focus on professional development.

Whichever level you study business at, and whatever field of specialization you choose, you can expect all types of business degrees to have a strong emphasis on the practical application of theory, through the use of case studies, problem-solving tasks, project and team work, and often also internships and placement schemes.

Business graduates go on to work in myriad different sectors, and not all of them are those you would typically associate with business in general. More obvious careers with a business degree include roles in accounting and finance departments, which take in large numbers of business degree graduates. Other sectors with high demand for business graduates include marketing and advertising, as well as retail, sales, human resources and business consultancy. The diversity and plenitude of careers with a business degree underlies the subject’s appeal for many students.

The message really is: the business degree itself does not automatically mean a high salary – though graduating from a highly reputed business school with strong grades is certainly likely to open up some interesting opportunities and perhaps a large business degree salary. You’ll still need to prove yourself, and be ready to work hard, if you want to reach your career and salary goals – and be prepared for plenty of competition.

In the US 2013-14 PayScale College Salary Report, the average starting business degree salary was reported at US$43,500, with the average mid-career salary at US$71,000. The figures vary depending on the specialization: international business graduates are projected to start on US$43,800 rising to $US83,700 by mid-career; for finance the figures are $49,200 and $87,100; accounting $45,300 and $74,900; human resources $38,000 and $63,900; organizational management $41,900 and $60,300; marketing management $42,100 and $80,200.

For those studying at the master’s level, business degree salary expectations are likely to be higher. According to the latest TopMBA.com Jobs Salary Trends Report, salaries for MBA graduates average almost US$109,200 in the US and Canada. In Western Europe the average earnings for those with an MBA are a little lower overall – but this varies depending on the country, while expectations in Australia are around US$117,800.

If a top salary is important to you, it may be worth while researching the latest salary trends and forecasts for different business specializations, as well as looking into the world regions reporting highest demand for business graduates.

Internal accountants create processes to find and eliminate financial waste and fraud. Management accountants record and analyze financial information. Training

Although there are some associate degrees for accounting, a bachelor’s degree generally looks better to prospective employers. Some employers may even prefer that their accountants have a master’s degree in accounting or business administration with a concentration in accounting. And some universities and colleges offer a five-year combined bachelor’s and master’s degree program, which is a smart choice for students hoping to take the Certified Public Accountant exam. Most states require graduates to have a total of 150 hours of coursework, which equates to five years of school, before sitting for the exam. After passing, accountants will be able to file reports to the Securities and Exchange Commission, which makes them much more attractive to employers. Christopher Ekimoff, the director of FTI Consulting, a global business advisory firm, says, “Those three letters [CPA] really make your career. They will identify you in the marketplace, in the business world and in your career path as a professional willing to hold yourself to a higher standard and operate under a set of guidelines and principles that really set you apart.”

In addition to the CPA certification, accountants may also want to get the Certified Management Accountant certification, which requires a bachelor’s degree, two years of work in management accounting and passing an exam. There are also a handful of other certifications that accountants may want to procure down the line, including the Certified Internal Auditor certification and the Certified Information Systems Auditor certification.

“I wasn’t terribly interested in marketing in college,” says Kate Beihl, chief marketing officer at MetaCommunications in Iowa City.

But in 2003, when Beihl was hunting for a job in Chicago, where she lived at the time, she applied for a marketing position at what was then called Children’s Memorial Hospital (now called the Ann Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago).

Beihl ended up landing the job as marketing coordinator at the hospital and found that, in fact, she loved marketing. “I loved the variety of work that we were doing,” she says. “I loved the inside marketing that we were doing: Having a single client and being able to really, deeply understand the way the work that we did, whether it was creating brochures or a new campaign or signage, all led back to the growth of the organization.”

Non-Governmental Job Options

Non-governmental organizations that may hire international relations graduates include the United Nations, international consulting firms, private volunteer organizations and multinational corporations. Salary Information

In January 2016, Payscale.com reported that the median annual salary for nonprofit program managers with a Master of Arts in International Relations was approximately $40,000. During the same time, the site indicated a median yearly salary of around $55,000 for research analysts holding the degree. Other job titles and estimated salary ranges for those with master’s degrees in international relations are as follows:

  • Foundation program officer: $40,598 – $102,428
  • Research associate: $32,229 – $71,766

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported in May 2015 that political scientists earned a median annual salary of $99,730 and had a projected decline in jobs of 2% from 2014-2024. The BLS also reported a median annual salary of $44,190 for translators and interpreters in May 2015 with projected job growth of 29% from 2014-2024.

Florence Nightingale, the pioneer of modern nursing, lived more than a century ago, but her legacy lives on in hospitals, clinics and schools. And she backed up her nursing philosophies with research. Today, nursing research is just one of the exciting changes in the field, says Kathy McCauley, associate dean of academic programs at the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Nursing. Increasingly, evidence-based science is confirming the contributions nurses make to patient care.

So, who are the people making these contributions? A registered nurse is the professional you’ll likely have the most contact with during a hospital stay. They’re responsible for monitoring a patient’s condition, performing medical procedures and administering medicine. They are also responsible for charting a patient’s progress. These professionals work with a range of patients, from those who are healthy (and are proactively trying to stay that way), to those who are pregnant and bringing new life, to those who are nearing the end of life and hoping for a peaceful death. “Nurses have a very holistic view of health and well-being, and I really appreciated that perspective,” Erin Whitehouse, an RN and Ph.D. student at Johns Hopkins School of Nursing, writes in an email. “[They] look at an entire person and their situation, not just what medical concern they have.”

Many nurses also specialize and work with patients who have a certain health condition like cancer or diabetes. They can also specialize by body part. For instance, there are dermatology nurses and cardiovascular nurses, among others. RNs can also specialize by people group (like newborn babies) or by environment (like a school or hospital emergency room).

Registered nurses will be in high demand in the next decade. The Bureau of Labor Statistics expects the profession to grow 16 percent by 2024, opening up 439,300 new jobs.

Market research analysts help their clients figure out who their consumers are, what those consumers want and how much they’ll pay for what they want. Analysts reach these conclusions with traditional methodologies like focus groups and surveys, as well as newer technologies. “Our industry has changed so much even in the last five years,” says Ted Donnelly, managing director for the marketing research and focus group firm Baltimore Research and chairman for the Marketing Research Association’s national board of directors. “We have so many new tools in the tool kit.” One of those new tools is geofencing, which uses GPS or similar technology to construct a virtual fence around a business and deliver targeted advertisements to a customer’s phone as he or she walks through a store. Eyetracking, which monitors how your eye travels around a website, is another technology these professionals use.

Market research analysts also churn out reports on sales trends and consumer demographics, preferences, needs and buying habits. They must be able to present their findings to clients in an easy-to-understand way. The process of collecting and analyzing data is logical and quantifiable; gauging why target audiences might be attracted to a particular product is anything but. This is why some of the most successful analysts seem to understand human emotions as much as they understand logic.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts an 18.6 percent employment increase between 2014 and 2024, and 92,300 new job openings. A range of employers, including research companies, colleges and government agencies, should galvanize growth in this field.

Training

Becoming a market research analyst requires at least a bachelor’s degree, but you could choose from a range of majors. The BLS notes that statistics, math, computer science and business administration are good specialties, but studying one of the social sciences, like communication, may also serve a budding analyst well. For instance, Donnelly has degrees in psychology, marketing research and consumer psychology. He says market research analysts should have both analytic skills and an innate curiosity about people. He recommends taking business management and statistical courses and says a familiarization with different software programs used for data analysis is helpful. Donnelly also recommends that analysts get their Professional Research Certification, which isn’t yet a requirement for most employers, but “it helps demonstrate that you’re very serious about what you do,” he says.

A Certified Nursing Assistant career is a great choice for someone who has a desire to help others but who may not have the time or money to attend nursing or medical school.

The required academic experience of a CNA is considerably less than that of a Registered Nurse who will likely have a minimum of a four-year bachelor’s degree or a doctor who may have eight or more years of school in addition to residency work. A CNA can expect to attend an accredited program for about two years to achieve an Associate’s Degree before undergoing certification testing. Some practices may require additional hands-on training but that varies by practice and does not follow a set routine.

Activities of a CNA may involve taking vital signs, weighing patients, assisting patients getting into or out of bed or walking, delivering messages, monitoring vital signs, collecting samples for testing, assisting with patient hygiene, feeding and monitoring food and liquid intake. CNAs may also assist doctors with diagnosis and treatment of conditions ranging from colds and flu to a yeast infection or more serious ailments such as diabetes and cancer.

This work may take place in a variety of settings that range from a doctor’s office or clinic to hospitals, long-term care facilities, rehabilitation facilities, outpatient care settings and even in-home environments where the CNA may work with limited supervision. It is important to know that a CNA is fairly low in the hierarchy of a medical practice’s staff and may be prone to being given jobs that are less desirable to others in the organization.

Currently, the average national salary for a CNA is about $29,000. While that may not seem like a lot compared to other professions, consider the stability and in-demand nature of the job. That is extremely beneficial, especially in a down economy. Additionally, CNAs pick up valuable knowledge along the way and with additional education have many doors to advancement available to them.

It’s an exciting time to be a financial advisor, since several decades ago, the position didn’t really exist. You were either a stockbroker or a community banker or even in insurance sales, according to James Kinney, a certified financial planner and founder of the New Jersey-based Financial Pathways. Now, however, financial advisors perform all these roles, from small independent practices to big investment firms.

“As a larger portion of the industry shifts away from the banks, brokers and insurance companies, additional opportunities have opened,” writes Eric Schaefer of the Virginia-based wealth management, investment and financial planning firm Savant Capitalin an email. “As this transition takes place, many advisors have gone independent or created ensemble relationships in new businesses. These new businesses need young, energetic and driven professionals to leverage the time of senior advisors and provide for the future continuity of the business.”

Put simply, financial advisors meet with clients and counsel them on their finances. This could mean sitting down and creating budgets to firming up retirement plans to giving advice about investing. Financial advisors can also invest a client’s funds and meet with him or her regularly to discuss their investments. Some are also licensed to sell insurance. Many times, financial advisors help plan a safe, comfortable future for their clients, but they’re also called upon when the unexpected occurs –perhaps an aging parent suddenly requires a live-in nurse, a couple plans on divorcing or a child needs to transfer to an expensive private school. Financial advisors may step in and make sense of these fiscal troubles and create a plan for moving forward. For that reason, Schaefer explains, “Good financial advisors and good teachers tend to have a lot of traits in common.” He points out that advisors must be able to listen to their clients; explain complex ideas in easy-to-understand ways; and be able to sympathize with their clients.

This is expected to be one of the faster-growing occupations over the next decade, with a projected growth rate of 30 percent through 2024, according to the Labor Department. That’s an additional 73,900 new positions on top of the 249,400 jobs financial advisors held in 2014. The retirement of baby boomers in need of financial planning advice is one driver of the expected growth. Still, employment may be tempered by the increasing number of online advisory tools, which may divert clients from seeking financial advice in person.

Training

To be a financial advisor, you need financial expertise and a desire to help people. A bachelor’s degree is typically a good starting place, but you can choose a broad range of degrees – from finance to business to something entirely different. Increasingly, universities have begun offering financial planning degrees, too.

However, Schaefer says, “My colleagues and I agree that 80 percent of our job is psychology, and only 20 percent is financial. I know successful owners of financial advisory firms that specifically recruit psychology majors for this reason. Though a business or economics degree will better prepare a professional to take industry exams or explain financial products, the ability to understand the core concerns and goals of a client or prospective client is much more valuable.”

The Certified Financial Planner exam is required to become a CFP –a distinction that looks good to employers. You can also acquire other designations if you want to specialize in a certain area of financial planning. For instance, you can complete the necessary coursework and exam to acquire the Chartered Retirement Plans Specialist, or CRPS, designation. And if you plan on buying or selling stocks or selling insurance, you’ll need to procure state-specific licenses.

Finding #1: The Business Analyst Salary Outpaces Other Professions

In the US, the average business analyst salary is $91,512. This number rose significantly since the $82,493 average salary reported in 2010, and is more than double the median household income.

The report summarized salary figures from five other countries in US dollars:

  • Average Business Analyst Salary in Australia: $111,949
  • Average Business Analyst Salary in Canada: $88,985
  • Average Business Analyst Salary in India: $18,086
  • Average Business Analyst Salary in South Africa: $57,893
  • Average Business Analyst Salary in the United Kingdom: $88,745

Finding #2: More BA Experience = Higher Salary

Across the board, the average business analyst salary increased with years of professional experience. Education did not have a significant impact on salary and in some countries had no impact.

This finding was consistent with the 2010 report. In fact, the 2010 report was more specific and indicated that each year of paid business analysis experience, salary rose by $923. (In contrast, for each year of paid software development experience, salaries only rose by $220.)

The good news for you is that even if you ve never held a titled business analyst job, you may have qualifying business analysis experience. While it s not a direct output of the report, investing the time in discovering your transferable skills and experiences could make a significant difference in your starting salary in your first or next formal business analyst position.

Finding #3: Business Analyst Salaries Diverged Significantly by Industry

In all countries, salaries diverged across industry. For example, in the United States, the lowest paying industry averaged salaries at $81,741 and the highest paying industry averaged salaries at $109,288 .

If you are considering focusing on a specific industry in your business analysis career, the report can help you make a wise financial decision. While exceptions always exist to every average, your choice of industry could have a significant impact on your long-term salary potential as a business analyst.

Business Analyst Salary What Are the Financial Benefits of Being a Business Analyst?

Are you wondering if your business analysis career goals make sense financially? Considering switching careers and wondering if you ll take a short-term salary hit? Simply looking to find out what salary a business analyst makes?

The most recent salary survey of practicing business analysts was conducted by the International Institute of Business Analysis (IIBA) in 2013. While the detailed report is available to IIBA members only, I obtained permission to share a few relevant details with our readers.

The report summarizes data from 2,085 responses representing 62 countries. Overall, the findings are positive for those considering a career in business analysis.

Finding #1: The Business Analyst Salary Outpaces Other Professions

In the US, the average business analyst salary is $91,512. This number rose significantly since the $82,493 average salary reported in 2010, and is more than double the median household income.

The report summarized salary figures from five other countries in US dollars:

  • Average Business Analyst Salary in Australia: $111,949
  • Average Business Analyst Salary in Canada: $88,985
  • Average Business Analyst Salary in India: $18,086
  • Average Business Analyst Salary in South Africa: $57,893
  • Average Business Analyst Salary in the United Kingdom: $88,745

Finding #2: More BA Experience = Higher Salary

Across the board, the average business analyst salary increased with years of professional experience. Education did not have a significant impact on salary and in some countries had no impact.

This finding was consistent with the 2010 report. In fact, the 2010 report was more specific and indicated that each year of paid business analysis experience, salary rose by $923. (In contrast, for each year of paid software development experience, salaries only rose by $220.)

The good news for you is that even if you ve never held a titled business analyst job, you may have qualifying business analysis experience. While it s not a direct output of the report, investing the time in discovering your transferable skills and experiences could make a significant difference in your starting salary in your first or next formal business analyst position.

Finding #3: Business Analyst Salaries Diverged Significantly by Industry

In all countries, salaries diverged across industry. For example, in the United States, the lowest paying industry averaged salaries at $81,741 and the highest paying industry averaged salaries at $109,288 .

If you are considering focusing on a specific industry in your business analysis career, the report can help you make a wise financial decision. While exceptions always exist to every average, your choice of industry could have a significant impact on your long-term salary potential as a business analyst.

Choose a banking related major. There is no investment banking major, so an individual must pick from an investment banking-related major such as finance, economics, business or accounting. Any of those majors should be fine. Having said that, increasingly banks accept and look to attract students with a mathematics or engineering background. The assumption is that students comfortable with quantitative sciences will find finance relatively easy to grasp.

While you are taking your classes, brush up on your spreadsheet and presentation skills. Investment banking is about being smooth with numbers. The right classes are great practice.

  • Make sure you are creating presentations with spreadsheets attached.
  • Microsoft Excel and Powerpoint are mainstream. Don’t spend as much time with alternate programs.

Get a summer internship. The best thing you can do to get an investment banking job right out of college is to get a summer internship at an investment banking firm before graduating.

  • Try for the big investment banking firms such as well known firms in New York or London. Getting an internship at a smaller investment bank is really just about as good. These firms are called “Boutique Investment Banks” and exist in many cities.
  • There are many reasons why a smaller bank may be easier to get an internship at. It may be in your town. There may also be a firm that is more specialized to what you have done. (For example, say you have interned at an airline. There are a couple boutique firms that pretty exclusively lease aircraft.) There may also be less competition. Lots of students haven’t heard of the boutique firms.
  • You can also get a summer internship at a regular bank (not an investment bank). That is not quite as good, but would still give you a huge leg up.

Hit the networks, and the social networks. Like anywhere, getting to know people outside of the interviews works great.

  • Join the investment banking club at your school, if there is one. That is a great way to network with potential employers.
  • Join Linkedin groups for investment banking.
  • Talk to alumni from your school that have recently joined investment banks. You can contact them via Linkedin or Readyforce or even Facebook. Ask them to lunch (if you are local) or a phone call if you are remote.
  • Don’t be afraid to travel to another city to meet people, if it will help you find better leads.

Look sharp when you meet the banks. They want people who can look the part.

  • The dress is classy, formal, and relatively old-school. It’s not, however, out on the leading edge of fashion.
  • If you are from California, say, and going to New York, dress up. Read up on business formal dress for both men and women .

  • Several popular websites and blogs cater to investment bankers. The language used is specifically aimed at finance professionals and reading gives you a better idea of the banker mindset.

Insurance agents are the men and women represented by some of TV’s most unforgettable ad campaigns. Insurance agents sell auto, health, home and life insurance. Commercial insurance agents also sell property damage and liability policies, employee and executive coverage and product liability. Insurance is a heavily regulated field, and agents must be licensed by their state.

Roughly a quarter of agents work for an insurance company and often sell its products exclusively. About half work for an independent insurance agency or brokerage and sell the products of many insurance companies. Nearly 20 percent are self-employed. Commissions are an important source of income for most agents, although a smaller number hold salaried positions. Agents spend considerable time developing and pursuing sales leads. Consumer policy agents do a lot of telephone and office work, while commercial agents are more likely to be out in the field with customers. Independent agents who work for a brokerage may have irregular hours, but they also have more control over their work schedules than agents who work for an insurance company or spend most of their time in an office. There tends to be a lot of turnover in this career, because many new agents struggle to earn sufficient commission income and switch to other occupations.

If you are a video game programmer. and it does not matter if you specialize in AI, networking or graphic engines, you will on the average, earn more then the other jobs in the industry. The starting salaries are down a little from previous years but that is only because many people have figured out that the video gaming industry is almost recession proof and many college graduates are flooding the industry. Here is what you can expect to make.

Programmers and Engineers first entering the business or with less than three years experience, you can start off by making, on the average, $50,000 a year. If you have between three and six years experience you can plan to earn $66K a year and if you have six years and up on the job you can make over $88K a year.

Lead programmers make a little more when they are coming in, but you will have more responsibilities. The entry level pay for a lead programmer is close to $56,000 a year. Once you have at least three years under your belt you should be averaging about $83K a year. Once you have been in the business for over six years you will make over $90K a year.

Video game technical directors have a lot of responsibilities so they are paid well, even at the entry level. For those coming into the business or having less then three years in the industry you can average $60,700 a year. Once you get between three to six year you can begin to make $73K a year. Those who last in the business for over six years you can expect to make just around $110K each year, one of the highest salaries for this job description was reported at $195,500.

Artist and Animators

In 2006 a survey found that artist and animators were making more money then the previous years and that was at all levels of experience. The largest increases in salary were earned by those with more then three years of experience. Artists have many responsibilities like giving the game its’ look and feel. It seems at the entry level artist may be paid a little less but once you have the experience you can actually make more money then coders. We found that the highest salaried coder made less then the highest paid artist. If you are an artist here is what you can figure on making:

A video game artist that is either just entering the business or has less then three years of experience can plan on making, on the average $41,500 a year. Once you have gained at least three years your earning will increase to $53,300. A game artist that can last in the business for over six years will make $66,700 a year.

Video game animators will make on the average, $46,700 a year for three years of experience or less. There is quite an increase once you make it past the three year mark, you can now make $67,000 a year. Once you have six years of experience as a video game animator you can now earn just over $75K a year.

If you are hired as a lead artist or animator you can expect a salary of just over $64K per year until you have at least three years of experience. Once you have over three years on the job you will begin to make around $67K. Once you have seniority on the job you can make anywhere from $80,000 to a whopping $215,000 a year.

Video Game Designers

When you were younger you probably told your parents that when you grew up you were going to make video games. They probably did not pay much attention to your comments at the time, but now you can actually make that dream job reality. The technical term for those who “make” video games is a game designer. The market for games designers is very competitive and it does not matter whether you are self-taught or are highly educated. The good thing is this position also pays well at all levels of experience. You will also find that the more proven you are in the industry the faster your salary will rise. Employers are looking for people that can withstand the rigors of the job. One of the best pieces of advice for a newbie is to get a mentor to work with.

A video game designer with less then three years of experience will make, on the average $46K a year. With between three and six years experience a game designer can bring home $55,600 a year. Once you have over six years of on the job experience you can average almost $70K a year.

If you are the creative director or lead designer you can bring home $45,000 a year until you have over three years of experience. Then you can start to average $54,000 a year. Lead designers or creative directors with over six years experience will make around $81K a year. The highest reported salary that we were able to find for a lead artist was $180,000 a year.

They coordinate all the different departments involved, and make sure that the deadlines are met and the project stays on budget. Becoming a video game producer takes a little time and one of the best places to start is in Quality Assurance.

Producers. some times referred to as the project lead usually has a minimum of three years of experience in the industry so we have no figures on what someone who has less then three years experience would make. Once you have had at least three years on the job you can expect to bring home $62,000 on the average. With over six years of experience you will begin to make an average of $80,000 a year.

Executive producers have been known to make, on the average, $50,000 a year. Once you have over six years of experience you can start to command a salary of almost $82K a year. Executive producers with over six years of experience will receive a six-figure salary. The highest salary we found was $200,000 a year.

If you are video game enthusiast but have no technical skills applying in the Quality Assurance department is a great way to get your foot in the door. If fact most producers once started in the QA department and work their way up the ladder

Becoming a game testers is a dream job for most video game enthusiast and you can get paid to actually play the games. You can expect to make $32,000 on the average if you have less then three years of experience. You really do not begin to make significantly more money until you have over six years of experience and then you can make an average of $50,000 ay year.

Any lead QA person can expect to make $40,000 a year until you have over three years of experience. You can then anticipate a salary of $50,000 for up to six years of experience. With more then six years of experience you will begin to make $60,000, on the average. If you are really good and can last in the business you can make a nice chunk of change, the highest report salary for a lead QA is $215,000.

This is a growing field in the gaming industry and the average salary has been increasing the past few years. This is especially true for entry-level musicians. Making a substantial living is relatively easy in this field; all you need is a good education and a resilient attitude. The wages quoted above are the result of a survey and adequately reflect the average salaries for each position describe. “Beauty is only skin-deep.” It’s a familiar phrase that means what’s on the outside doesn’t always reflect what’s on the inside. But if we’re strictly talking about what’s on the outside – well, skin does have a lot to do with outer beauty. And a skin care specialist has a lot to do with helping clients attain that outer beauty.

These specialists, or estheticians as they’re sometimes called, cleanse and exfoliate, wax and laser, moisturize and apply makeup to enhance a person’s overall appearance. A skin care specialist will first assess the condition of his or her clients’ skin and make recommendations on what can be done to improve their skin quality. For instance, chemical peels can reduce the appearance of fine lines or wrinkles; waxing and lasers remove unwanted hair; and exfoliating scrubs can slough off dead skin. An esthetician will also cleanse the skin, and in so doing, educate the client on which face washes, lotions and creams are best suited to him or her. Applying makeup is another piece of the job description, as is advising the client on a personalized skin care regimen. An esthetician might also perform facials, massages and other full-body treatments. A less glamorous part of the job includes disinfecting equipment and cleaning work areas.

Since skin care specialists stand face-to-face with their clients, they should enjoy interacting with people. Many times, skin care specialists find great fulfillment in helping people look their best, especially since the pay isn’t particularly high compared to other health care occupations. Respect and sensitivity are key traits, too. If clients show serious skin problems, skin care specialists may have to refer them to dermatologists.

The future looks bright for skin care specialists. The BLS projects employment growth of 12 percent from 2014 to 2024, which is faster than the average for all occupations. This growth is driven primarily by women clients – although men are increasingly seeking skin care specialists to battle the appearance of aging.

Training

Each state dictates different educational requirements for skin care specialists. All states, except Connecticut, require skin care specialists to complete a cosmetology or esthetician program and obtain a license. Educational requirements vary, ranging from 300 hours to 1,500 hours of courses, depending on the state. The average number of class hours is about 600. In order to get a license, skin care specialists will need to take and pass a practical and written exam. Many entry-level estheticians will receive further training on the job, especially if they work with chemicals. With new products constantly entering the market and medical advancements, the Professional Beauty Association and American Association of Cosmetology Schools offer continuing education through seminars and webinars, so specialists can stay up to date on the latest treatments and developments in the field.

Pros: Owners are great people to work with and for along with the Regional Manager and they are compassionate and family oriented. Cons: Long hours and feeling underpaid. On call 24/7 which often interrupts time with my family. Hi demand of deadlines and paperwork with many duties to complete and not having enough time to do so. The lack of TV and radio advertising to help build business. The constant struggle to find good Care Providers to place in Senior’s homes. Having to find Care Providers to fill in on cases over weekends, so the lack of professionalism with the independent contractors hired. Stress level is also very high worrying about keeping cases staffed and bringing in new cases.

Cons: Teams within VMware do not work together well. Senior management has difficulty operationalizing the goals of the business and separate teams have very little idea how other teams operate. The company has very few explicit procedures/systems which can make knowing where to go for help/advice/resources very difficult.

Business Analyst Salary What Are the Financial Benefits of Being a Business Analyst?

The report summarizes data from 2,085 responses representing 62 countries. Overall, the findings are positive for those considering a career in business analysis.

Finding #1: The Business Analyst Salary Outpaces Other Professions

In the US, the average business analyst salary is $91,512. This number rose significantly since the $82,493 average salary reported in 2010, and is more than double the median household income.

The report summarized salary figures from five other countries in US dollars:

  • Average Business Analyst Salary in Australia: $111,949
  • Average Business Analyst Salary in Canada: $88,985
  • Average Business Analyst Salary in India: $18,086
  • Average Business Analyst Salary in South Africa: $57,893
  • Average Business Analyst Salary in the United Kingdom: $88,745

Finding #2: More BA Experience = Higher Salary

Across the board, the average business analyst salary increased with years of professional experience. Education did not have a significant impact on salary and in some countries had no impact.

This finding was consistent with the 2010 report. In fact, the 2010 report was more specific and indicated that each year of paid business analysis experience, salary rose by $923. (In contrast, for each year of paid software development experience, salaries only rose by $220.)

The good news for you is that even if you ve never held a titled business analyst job, you may have qualifying business analysis experience. While it s not a direct output of the report, investing the time in discovering your transferable skills and experiences could make a significant difference in your starting salary in your first or next formal business analyst position.

Finding #3: Business Analyst Salaries Diverged Significantly by Industry

In all countries, salaries diverged across industry. For example, in the United States, the lowest paying industry averaged salaries at $81,741 and the highest paying industry averaged salaries at $109,288 .

If you are considering focusing on a specific industry in your business analysis career, the report can help you make a wise financial decision. While exceptions always exist to every average, your choice of industry could have a significant impact on your long-term salary potential as a business analyst.

“Beauty is only skin-deep.” It’s a familiar phrase that means what’s on the outside doesn’t always reflect what’s on the inside. But if we’re strictly talking about what’s on the outside – well, skin does have a lot to do with outer beauty. And a skin care specialist has a lot to do with helping clients attain that outer beauty.

These specialists, or estheticians as they’re sometimes called, cleanse and exfoliate, wax and laser, moisturize and apply makeup to enhance a person’s overall appearance. A skin care specialist will first assess the condition of his or her clients’ skin and make recommendations on what can be done to improve their skin quality. For instance, chemical peels can reduce the appearance of fine lines or wrinkles; waxing and lasers remove unwanted hair; and exfoliating scrubs can slough off dead skin. An esthetician will also cleanse the skin, and in so doing, educate the client on which face washes, lotions and creams are best suited to him or her. Applying makeup is another piece of the job description, as is advising the client on a personalized skin care regimen. An esthetician might also perform facials, massages and other full-body treatments. A less glamorous part of the job includes disinfecting equipment and cleaning work areas.

Since skin care specialists stand face-to-face with their clients, they should enjoy interacting with people. Many times, skin care specialists find great fulfillment in helping people look their best, especially since the pay isn’t particularly high compared to other health care occupations. Respect and sensitivity are key traits, too. If clients show serious skin problems, skin care specialists may have to refer them to dermatologists.

The future looks bright for skin care specialists. The BLS projects employment growth of 12 percent from 2014 to 2024, which is faster than the average for all occupations. This growth is driven primarily by women clients – although men are increasingly seeking skin care specialists to battle the appearance of aging.

Each state dictates different educational requirements for skin care specialists. Educational requirements vary, ranging from 300 hours to 1,500 hours of courses, depending on the state. The average number of class hours is about 600. In order to get a license, skin care specialists will need to take and pass a practical and written exam. Many entry-level estheticians will receive further training on the job, especially if they work with chemicals. With new products constantly entering the market and medical advancements, the Professional Beauty Association and American Association of Cosmetology Schools offer continuing education through seminars and webinars, so specialists can stay up to date on the latest treatments and developments in the field.

Accountants make a pretty good living, and they have a lot of job security. After all, as long as people make money, they’ll need other people to handle it for them.

Put simply, an accountant is a person who keeps or inspects financial records. They’re “numbers” people who excel at organization and detail-oriented work. Since they deal with money – sometimes significant amounts of it – accountants must also possess a high degree of integrity.And because they’re constantly interacting with clients, accountants should be effective communicators. Patty Pogemiller, the national director for talent and acquisition and mobility for Deloitte, one of the world’s “Big Four” accounting firms, writes in an email, “Problem solving skills are essential in a client business like professional services. Employers are looking for people who demonstrate an ability to think analytically and approach a problem in a structured and methodical way. Can they objectively analyze and solve an issue? And once they have a solution, they must have the ability to communicate it to others – their clients, managers and fellow team members.”

In addition to preparing taxes for individuals, public accountants can also perform audits, prepare taxes and provide consulting for corporations, nonprofit organizations and governments. Internal accountants create processes to find and eliminate financial waste and fraud. Management accountants record and analyze financial information. Government accountants – at the federal, state or local level – maintain records of government agencies and audit private businesses or individuals whose activities fall under government regulation or taxation.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that 142,400 new accounting and auditing jobs will open up by 2024. This equates to an 11 percent job growth rate.

Although there are some associate degrees for accounting, a bachelor’s degree generally looks better to prospective employers. Some employers may even prefer that their accountants have a master’s degree in accounting or business administration with a concentration in accounting. And some universities and colleges offer a five-year combined bachelor’s and master’s degree program, which is a smart choice for students hoping to take the Certified Public Accountant exam. Most states require graduates to have a total of 150 hours of coursework, which equates to five years of school, before sitting for the exam. After passing, accountants will be able to file reports to the Securities and Exchange Commission, which makes them much more attractive to employers. Christopher Ekimoff, the director of FTI Consulting, a global business advisory firm, says, “Those three letters [CPA] really make your career. They will identify you in the marketplace, in the business world and in your career path as a professional willing to hold yourself to a higher standard and operate under a set of guidelines and principles that really set you apart.”

In addition to the CPA certification, accountants may also want to get the Certified Management Accountant certification, which requires a bachelor’s degree, two years of work in management accounting and passing an exam. There are also a handful of other certifications that accountants may want to procure down the line, including the Certified Internal Auditor certification and the Certified Information Systems Auditor certification.
