Working with Business Objects in SAP

By Swetabh Shukla, Infosys

Business Object type contains methods, attributes and events which give a component based view of any Business Process.

For example we have a Purchase Order business process. This process includes various small functionalities. It will have process of changing Purchase orders based upon requirements, functionality to retrieve the details of purchase order etc. Each of these functionalities is encapsulated inside a method. The method can call the function modules present in R3 system or can have there own code to execute some functionality. So if we consider Purchase Order as a Business Object then it will be identified by key field Purchase Order number. Each purchase order business object based upon key field purchase order number is different. It’s so because each purchase order is different and will contain different details.

So the methods contain business functionality. Attributes are just like properties of the Business object. For example for any purchase order Purchasing Group, Purchasing Organization etc are attributes.

Technically we can say that business object types are just like any template. At runtime we instantiate or create runtime objects for any BO (Business Object) type based upon the key fields we pass. Two runtime Business objects of same BO type are different from each other based upon the key fields we pass. So the key field is the differentiating factor for two or more runtime business objects of same BO type.

To Browse for BO open tcode SWO2 (Path – Tools – ABAP Workbench- Overview- Business Object Browser).

You can expand the nodes and can check various business objects in BOR. You can double click on the BO node and it will take you to BO display (SWO1).

1 Working with Business Object in our programs

For creating a Business Object and its attributes there are many already existing tutorials. So in this tutorial we will not discuss creation of BO and its attributes.

1.1 To create instance of a BO

To create an instance of BO we need to have the key fields of that BO. Key fields will be used to uniquely identify the BO. We can use the FM ‘SWO_CREATE’ to create an instance of BO in any report program.

The variable ‘object’ will hold runtime instance of the object type.

The other way is to use the macros defined in include cntn01

Internally the macro calls the FM SWO_CREATE. So you can either go for direct FM call or the macro call.

1.2 Container

Basically the term Container is used with reference to Business Objects and Workflows. The Container actually holds import and export parameters associated with any method of Business Object at runtime. When ever we are calling any method of Business Object we need to populate container for import parameters and after the method gets executed it returns the values (export parameters) in Container.

Business Object container is technically of type SWCONT structure.

Here ‘ELEMENT’ will be name of the variable/internal table which container holds and ‘VALUE’ will have corresponding value. For multi line variable or internal tables, the container will hold multiple values with same element name.

1.2.1 Lets take an example to check what Container is

For example let’s create a Business Object ‘ZSWE1’ with only one method ‘READ’. We will discuss the creation of BO in very brief.

Key field will be Purchase Order number (EKKO_EBELN) for BO.

Method READ will take Purchase Order number as input and will give all the Purchase Line items in it in an internal table.

Step 1. Create BO ZSWE1 for test purpose. You can give it any name.

Step 2. Now create a method READ

Save the method. Now we will create the parameters of the method.

Exclusive – SAP opens probe into South African unit kickback reports

Europe’s top technology company, SAP ( SAP ). has put four senior managers in South Africa on leave and begun a probe into reports that have dragged the company into an influence peddling scandal involving friends of President Jacob Zuma.

Europe’s top technology company, SAP ( SAP ). has put four senior managers in South Africa on leave and begun a probe into reports that have dragged the company into an influence peddling scandal involving friends of President Jacob Zuma.

South African media reported allegations on Tuesday that SAP paid kickbacks in the form of sales commissions to a firm linked to the politically connected Gupta family, helping SAP clinch a deal worth 1 billion rand ($76 million) with rail and logistics company Transnet and other state-owned firms.

AmaBhungane, a non-profit investigative reporting group that has a strong record of exposing corruption, named SAP in a story based on leaked emails and documents that it says show how the Gupta family unduly influences the awarding of government contracts worth hundreds of millions of dollars.

The ruling African National Congress party has been damaged by leaked emails appearing to show fraud in the awarding of state contracts.

“We’ve obviously seen the claims in the media. And we’re taking these extremely, very, very seriously.” Adaire Fox-Martin, SAP co-president for global customer operations, told Reuters in an exclusive interview on Wednesday.

Fox-Martin said SAP was putting the executives on administrative leave, pending the outcome of internal and external investigations that the company has initiated.

The German company has hired an independent international law firm based in the United States to conduct an external investigation and also will run its own, internal probe using SAP’s compliance organisation, she said.

SAP declined to name the four management-level employees, or their job titles.

Reuters has not been able to independently verify the allegations.

The Guptas, Indian-born South Africans, and Zuma have previously denied wrongdoing. Seeking response to the fresh allegations involving SAP, a Gupta family spokesman and Zuma’s spokesman did not respond to calls and emails for comment.

Transnet said in a statement that it has been an SAP customer since 2000 but that it was unaware of the parties reportedly involved in SAP sales to the company. “All queries related to our suppliers and any third parties should be raised with them directly,” the company said, referring to SAP.

Fox-Martin, who was named to SAP’s global executive board two months ago and is the executive in charge of overseeing sales and customers service operation across Africa, Greater China, Europe and the Middle East, is travelling to South Africa to meet with customers and employees.

“As a company we’re initiating a very thorough and very vigorous investigation,” she said.

SAP, the world’s largest supplier of business planning software that multinationals use to manage far-flung operations, is acting quickly to limit reputational damage for a company that is a leading supplier of compliance software and services, among its many products.

It also must ward off repercussions from regulators for possible U.S. foreign corrupt practice violations after it was hit last year with a $3.9 million fine by the Securities and Exchange Commission.

The company, whose stock is dual-listed in Frankfurt and New York, was found by the SEC to have failed to maintain sufficient internal controls to prevent a bribery scheme by a former sales executive who won lucrative contracts with the Panamanian government. (http://reut.rs/2vcPOIp)

“We feel that a fast reaction to this, indicating that we are working to get to the bottom of this, will actually indicate the seriousness with which SAP takes these allegations and our intention to conduct a fully transparent investigation on this,” Fox-Martin said.

She said the results of the investigation will be made public.

Carmaker Volkswagen ( Volkswagen ) of Germany, embroiled in an emissions-test cheating affair for almost two years, also commissioned an independent lawyers’ investigation but did not publish the results as it had indicated it would.

German industrial giant Siemens ( Siemens ) – which battled its own foreign bribery scandal a decade ago – has been swept up in a fresh scandal in which two of its gas turbines sold for use in Russia turned up in Crimea in violation of European Union sanctions.

Siemens filed a suit on Tuesday against a Russian state firm, saying the Russian company had moved the turbines “against its will”.

On Wednesday, South African Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa criticised corruption he said had damaged his ruling party under Zuma, opening a divide in the African National Congress ahead of a leadership contest set for later this year.

Zuma’s business friends, the Guptas, have been accused by ANC politicians and the opposition of using their close relationship with Zuma and his allies to influence the awarding of government contracts worth hundreds of millions of dollars. (http://reut.rs/2uaeyV4)

Ramaphosa called for a judicial inquiry into the allegations.

Case Studies

ArcelorMittal Case Study

ArcelorMittal is the world’s leading steel and mining company. Guided by a philosophy to produce safe, sustainable steel, it is the leading supplier of quality steel products in all major markets including automotive, construction, household appliances and packaging. ArcelorMittal operates in 60 countries and employs 260,000 people worldwide.

ArcelorMittal South Africa established a need for a business intelligence solution in 2011 and went through a rigorous process of researching and deciding on a business intelligence solution to take to Proof of Concept phase. “After our brief introduction to QlikView towards the end of 2011, I was quite skeptical that one business analytics tool can be so flexible and powerful. But I was mistaken BusinessIntelligent proved to us that a workable solution, with our own SAP Human Resources data, was possible within only 5 days!” said Tobie Otto, Senior Consultant – SAP COE.

“We decided to change our Business Analytics Strategy and give BusinessIntelligent a chance to add value to our business. In the last 6 months we have managed to create more than 10 QlikView solutions in several business environments, such as Human Resources, Treasury, Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Procurement Logistics and Plant Maintenance. The users of these models agree that these solutions are extremely user friendly, save them many hours of combining data from different sources and are very easy to use.”

SAB Limited Case Study

SAB is the second-largest listed company on the JSE Securities Exchange, as well as South Africa’s leading producer-distributor of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages and one of the nation’s largest manufacturing firms. The group runs SAP across its operations to manage its sales, finance, marketing, and supply chain functions, producing high data volumes across multiple systems in a complex IT structure.

In this milieu, SAB struggled to measure and manage output and perform data analysis. Business users employed various reporting tools to extract and analyse data, but these solutions proved complex and ineffective.

The company set out 18 months ago to find a solution that would allow it to combine and analyse multiple data sets across different systems. The solution had to be easy to use, fast and insightful in SAB’s ongoing quest to measure and improve operational efficiency. It also had to handle vast amounts of data (230 000 rows of data are added every day in the operational system alone).

SAB evaluated QlikView, introduced to it by the vendor’s implementation partner, BusinessIntelligent. SAB’s Operations department did a proof of concept against their requirements that outperformed the corporate IT alternative in terms of fit for purpose. After the proof-of-concept demonstrations, test users indicated their satisfaction with QlikView on all counts. SAB purchased 500 licences together with the QlikView SAP Connector and proceeded to roll it out country-wide.

Foodcorp Case Study

In its quest to be one of South Africa’s most innovative food businesses, Foodcorp, the country’s third largest food company, has well positioned itself as a leading manufacturer of great-tasting branded food products.

While distributing most of its products nationally to major retail and wholesale outlets, independent retailers, forecourts and the food services industry, Foodcorp also exports a number of products to Western Europe, the Middle East, Far East and the rest of Africa.

Operating 10 divisions through a decentralised business model, Foodcorp identified an urgent need to consolidate their reporting from all their different divisions, and across the full range of their brands.

As per Foodcorp’s initial brief, too much time was being spent on collating data and making sense of complex reports. A dynamic tool was needed to enable the company to accurately determine capacity, and quickly identify trends and analysis of data that would indicate where the business is, and isn’t performing to its full potential.

Traditionally there has been a strong reliance on a few key individuals to collate and analyse this data, and this concentration of skills can be problematic in the long run. A key objective was to put the data into a format that is clear to understand and widely accessible to decision makers on a self-service basis.

Quality Sugars Case Study

Seeking a quick and cost-‐effective approach to its need for integrated sales analytics applications,Quality Sugars, the sales arm of TSB Sugar, one of the largest sugar producers in SA, approached BusinessIntelligent to address this need.

BusinessIntelligent, a leading provider of business intelligence and application development solutions in South Africa, responded to Quality Sugars’ plea by illustrating the effectiveness of QlikView BI technology. A partner to BusinessIntelligent, QlikView is the fastest-growing business intelligence vendor globally and in South Africa, and the company ensures that new ideas and technologies facilitate the client’s improvement by consolidating reporting data.

The latter function particularly appealed to Quality Sugars, with QlikView further supporting the company’s mandate for a quick and cost-effective application of services. In particular need of an application assisting in an integrated approach to its sales analysis, Quality Sugars set out to investigate the feasibility and capability of an in-memory business analysis and reporting solution – which was perfectly matched by the benefits and functionality of QlikView.

LegalWise Case Study

LegalWise is a provider of affordable face to face legal assistance and advice, and also provides access to the services of a lawyer for those LegalWise members who need legal representation. Their reputation is such that one phone call by the company’s legal counsellors is often sufficient to bring most transgressors to their senses.

LegalWise has over 80 branches countrywide and is served by a highly experienced panel of 1,200 affiliated attorneys.

Previously, data collection and reporting costs were hidden in the operating costs of the company, which made it difficult to see and account for the value that went into gathering and extracting of information from previous sources.

LegalWise realized that they needed a tool to help them with improving the accuracy of reporting, setting a standard format for all reporting, increasing the scope of the reporting and also to enhance the extent of the data analysis for value add to the business.

Based on a recommendation from a business partner, the company decided to implement the QlikView solution from BusinessIntelligent. The solution contributed immensely to timely, more accurate reporting and prompt decision making. With easier access to data, strengths and weaknesses are easily identified for continuous improvement opportunities.
