Top 10 undergrad business programs in the U, top business schools.#Top #business

Top 10 undergrad business programs in the U.S.

(Poets Quants) What’s the best undergraduate business program in the U.S.?

If you believe U.S. News World Report‘s annual ranking, it’s Wharton, hands down. If you think Bloomberg BusinessWeek would have a better clue about what makes a great business program, you would probably be surprised that Wharton doesn’t even make its top five. BusinessWeek prefers Notre Dame University’s Mendoza College of Business.

We’ve come up with a new way to look at the best programs, combining the results of the two most closely watched rankings of the undergraduate experience with a new and important wrinkle in the analysis: a university’s overall national rank in the annual U.S. News list. After all, a student who majors in business at any of these schools will be taking far more courses outside the business school during the four years he or she is enrolled in an undergraduate program. So the school’s overall reputation should be as important as the quality of the business program.

Using this composite methodology, the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School comes out on top, with a significant lead over the two schools that have tied for second place: Cornell University’s Dyson School and Notre Dame. The University of Virginia’s McIntire School of Business comes in fourth, while Washington University’s Olin School rounds out the top five. Many of the first-tier programs are well known. The business schools at UC-Berkeley, the University of Michigan, Emory University, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and Carnegie Mellon University complete the top 10.

Four of the top 10 undergraduate programs in business are at public universities. That’s largely because many of the best-known private schools that grant MBA degrees, such as Stanford’s Graduate School of Business, Harvard Business School, Columbia University, Northwestern University, the University of Chicago, and Dartmouth Tuck to name a few, do not have undergraduate business programs.

Wharton’s clear win is not surprising. The school boasts one of the most respected, and selective, undergraduate business programs in the country. The University of Pennsylvania has a 12% acceptance rate, and it doesn’t break its statistics down by school—though the rumors are that Wharton is harder to get into than Penn. A veritable Who’s Who of America’s Corporate Elite have waved hefty job offers at the roughly 650 students in the class of 2014, making freshly minted Whartonites among the most richly paid business undergraduates in the world.

With more applicants seeking a place in business programs throughout the U.S., it s also getting significantly tougher to get into a top undergraduate program. Average SAT scores at many of the highly ranked schools have risen steadily in recent years. At the Wharton School, average SATs are up 22 points to 1466 in the past three years alone (we’re using the older scoring method in which a 1600 is a perfect score, not the current 2400). That’s considerably higher than the overall average of 1050 for SAT test takers.

Demand is really growing at a higher rate at this point, says Lori Rosenkopf, vice dean and director of Wharton s undergraduate business program. Certainly, if we look at our own trends in terms of just pure applications over the last decade, we’ve seen an almost continuous rise, with the exception of the economic crisis of 2008. For the current application cycle right now, we’ve had a 13% increase in applications. I think it represents this understanding more generally that business translates through many spheres.

The Poets Quants system tends to diminish anomalies in any one ranking, a common problem with statistical analysis. Those odd effects lead to some fairly divergent results between the U.S. News and Bloomberg BusinessWeek rankings. While Wake Forest University’s business school is ranked No. 11 by BusinessWeek, for example, U.S. News puts it at No. 34. And while U.S. News gives UC-Berkeley’s business school a highly impressive No. 2 ranking, BusinessWeek ranks the same school at No. 15.

There are even more dramatic differences among other schools. Consider Northeastern University’s D’Amore-McKim School of Business. U.S. News has it at No. 72; BusinessWeek gave it 19th place. That’s a difference of 53 places. Then, there is MIT’s prestigious Sloan School of Management. U.S. News has it in a three-way tie for second place, behind only Wharton. Shockingly, however, the school failed to make this year’s BusinessWeek ranking at all. The year before, MIT fell out of the top 10 to 19th place largely because Sloan has fewer than 125 undergraduate business majors, about 2% of its undergraduate student body. Other schools have thousands of students studying business. “For a potential employer looking specifically to hire a large number of business majors, this isn’t enough students to make a campus visit worthwhile,” explained the publication.

Why are such dramatic differences so common among the two ranking systems? The inconsistencies can be chalked up to significantly different ranking methodologies. U.S. News’ results are entirely based on the magazine’s survey of business school deans and senior faculty, many of whom vote on the basis of a program’s reputation, not its true quality. They are asked to rate the quality of all programs they were familiar with on a scale from 1 (marginal) to 5 (distinguished).

The BusinessWeek methodology is much more complicated and inclusive. It is based on surveys of students, employers, and schools. The student portion of the survey alone includes 44 questions about teaching quality, access to faculty, school facilities, career services, and more. The corporate recruiter survey was completed by 301 of the 922 surveyed employers, a response rate of 32.6%. An attempt to size up a school’s academic quality, using such factors as average SAT scores for the latest entering class and the ratio of faculty to students, is also used based on both school- and student-provided data.

    School Information

Many schools offer undergraduate programs in business, though the best schools have a reputation for excellence that’s backed by national rankings and the availability of numerous program concentrations. We’ll explore three of these schools in depth and briefly look at a few others as well. Undergraduate business programs typically include a core set of classes in finance, economics, accounting, management, and marketing. They usually lead to a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) or Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Business. Here we look into business programs offered by three schools that were ranked by U.S. News and World Report for 2017.

University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, PA

The University of Pennsylvania had the number one undergraduate business school in the country, according to U.S. News and World Report for 2017. Unlike many other business schools, all undergraduate business students pursue a generalized Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Economics, which offers concentrations in 20 areas, including public policy and business, business ethics and legal studies, real estate, retailing, and statistics. All undergraduates are required to study a foreign language. Additional school features include the chance to establish professional contacts at recruiting events or use the school’s alumni database to gain advice from business professionals.

University of Notre Dame in Notre Dame, IN

The business school at the University of Notre Dame was tied as the ninth best in the nation by U.S. News and World Report for 2017. Undergraduates can earn a BBA with a major in accounting, information technology, or management consulting. Majors in marketing, finance, or entrepreneurship are also available. Students can also pursue research opportunities and study abroad programs in Egypt, Japan, or other locations.

    Top Business Schools for Undergraduates

    Top business schools

If you re interested in studying business, check out these top business schools first. Each has impressive facilities, professors, and name recognition. I ve listed the schools alphabetically to avoid the arbitrary distinctions often used to decide who should be number 7 or 8 in a top ten list. That said, the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania consistently claims the top spot in national rankings.

Even if you re not 100% sure that business is right for you, realize that all of these programs are at large universities where you can change majors fairly easily. In fact, some of these schools require students to take a year of liberal arts and sciences courses before admission to the business program.

If you re thinking of going on for an MBA, also know that an undergraduate business degree is by no means a prerequisite. The critical thinking, writing and math skills at the heart of a liberal arts education can serve you just as well, if not better, than a more narrow pre-professional degree.

    Cornell University

    Top business schools

Located in Ithaca, New York, Cornell University has several excellent options for undergraduates interested in business and management, and the university frequently places high on rankings of undergraduate business programs. Students can choose from the Dyson School of Applied Economics and Management, the School of Hotel Management, and the School of Industrial and Labor Relations. The Dyson School is housed within the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. Both Dyson and ILR are part of Cornell s state-funded unit, so tuition will be lower than it is for the School of Hotel Management. Prospective students need to designate which school they are applying to on their applications. Hotel Management is generally thought to be the best program of its type in the country. Cornell is part of the Ivy League, and it frequently ranks among the top universities in the country.

Emory University – Goizueta School of Business

    Top business schools

The Goizueta School of Business gets its name from Roberto Goizueta, former president of the Coca-Cola Company. The school is on Emory s main campus in the metropolitan Atlanta area. This highly-ranked school offers its students exchange opportunities with the Cass School of Business in London. The Goizueta curriculum builds upon a two-year liberal arts and sciences foundation. Students, both transfers and from within Emory, can apply only when they have attained junior standing. A minimum of a B average in pre-business courses is required for admission.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology – Sloan School of Management

    Top business schools

The Sloan School of Management, located on the Charles River in Cambridge, frequently finds itself on top-ten lists of undergraduate business schools. The Sloan School offers bachelor s, master s and doctoral degrees, and undergraduates can often take classes with graduate students. There is no separate admissions process for the Sloan School—students who have been accepted to MIT simply declare Management Science as their major at the end of freshman year. In 2008, MIT launched a new minor in Management Science. The mathematically-challenged should think twice before considering Sloan—the school has an unusually strong emphasis on quantitative analysis.

New York University – Stern School of Business

    Top business schools

Located in Greenwich Village in Manhattan, New York University s Leonard N. Stern School of Business is a great choice for the ambitious student who wants a top program in a bustling urban environment. The Stern School of Business is highly competitive with a significantly lower rate of acceptance than NYU as a whole. Unlike some other undergraduate business programs, the Stern School is a four-year curriculum — students must indicate their interest in business on their initial application to NYU.

The critical thinking, writing and math skills at the heart of a liberal arts education can serve you just as well, if not better, than a more narrow pre-professional degree.

    Cornell University

    Best business schools

  • Best Business School Programs (MBA) – Compare Rankings, top business schools.#Top #business

    Best Graduate Business Schools (MBA)

    Top business schools

Choosing the right MBA program is a complicated decision that will continue to affect your career long after graduation. Our list includes only AACSB accredited schools as this is the most respected accreditation agency when it comes to business schools.

While it is critical to select a program that specializes in the area of business you want to study, be sure to consider the reputation of the school as well as the network of contacts you will build while you are there. For example, if you are interested in quantitative investing, then you might want to look into the MBA program at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. If entrepreneurship or venture capital is your passion, then you may want to apply to the Stanford Graduate School of Business. Both of these schools have stellar reputations for their programs in those specific concentrations, and their respective networks of contacts will continue to aid in the development of your career for years to come. It is also important to pay close attention to the Smart Rank, which weighs important factors for the institution. Additionally, it is beneficial to consider the average salary for graduates. While this should not be the single determining factor, it can help you make a decision once you have narrowed down your choices.

Read the following sections for more information on the various factors to consider when choosing a business school. Once you are ready to start researching, head back to the search results page and use the different filters to find the best business school for you.

    Rankings

Our Smart Rankings are based on the most important factors in the quality of a business school institution and are determined by rating each school on these factors.

GMAT and GPA of incoming students indicate the quality of the student body, which generally translates to the quality of the business school. We also include the average amount of previous work experience the entering class has and the acceptance rate (lower generally indicates higher quality).

It’s important to know that when you finish your MBA, you’ll be able to land a job with a decent salary, so post-graduation salary is taken into account when determining rankings.

U.S. business schools embrace fintech as students clamor for courses

(This June 8 story, in second paragraph clarifies courses are for business school students, not only MBAs)

NEW YORK (Reuters) – Leading U.S. business schools are trying to teach students how to become masters of financial technology, a sub sector of Wall Street that has grown in size and prominence, but because the area is still ill-defined and relatively new it is hard to develop courses.

Stanford University and Georgetown University business schools are planning to offer fintech courses for business school students for the first time this fall. New York University is planning a new course for undergraduates after launching a fintech specialization in its business school last year.

They join the University of Pennsylvania s Wharton School, Columbia University s business school and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology s (MIT) Sloan School of Management, which all launched similar programs in recent years.

The new courses are being driven by student demand, officials from those universities told Reuters in interviews.

A number of prominent startups have exploded onto the fintech scene in recent years, fostering interest in mobile payment apps like Venmo, digital loan platforms like SoFi and robotic wealth managers like Betterment.

Ten years ago everyone wanted to go into investment banking or in the trading side, said Reena Aggarwal, Director of the Georgetown Center for Financial Markets and Policy. Now the students are much more interested in innovation.

NYU s undergraduate course, for instance, attracted enrollments from twice as many students as expected.

But the burgeoning industry is so diverse that academics said it is difficult to construct a syllabus for financial technology 101. There are no textbooks and few professors have fintech expertise.

For fintech, some people mean bitcoin and cryptocurrencies; some people mean the technology JPMorgan uses for trading, said Angela Lee, Columbia Business School s chief innovation officer. Everyone thinks it s sexy, and a lot of people use it colloquially without knowing what it is.

Instead of developing traditional syllabuses, universities have been teaching students how markets are disrupted by new technology, helping them develop business ideas or offering classes on narrower topics.

For instance, MIT taught a course on blockchain, the technology that first emerged as a system underpinning the virtual currency bitcoin. Stanford s course will focus on financial inclusion, or designing affordable products and services for disadvantaged customers, said Kenneth Singleton, a management professor who will teach the class.

Universities have also invited financial technology executives to lecture.

There is no ready-made teaching material that you can put together, Antoinette Schoar, a professor of finance at MIT Sloan, said in an interview. You have to try your own curriculum or develop real life cases.

Those involved with the programs said learning about fintech can help students careers, whether they join traditional Wall Street firms or launch their own companies. They said it has also helped attract high-quality students.

One Wharton student, David Gogel, enrolled after developing an interest in fintech while working at American International Group Inc ( AIG.N ). He is now co-president of the FinTech Club, one of the largest professional organizations at the school, with 260 members.

Part of the reason I chose Wharton was because of its investment in fintech, he said in an interview.

    Best business schools

    Best business schools

    Best business schools

    Best business schools

Located in Greenwich Village in Manhattan, New York University s Leonard N. Stern School of Business is a great choice for the ambitious student who wants a top program in a bustling urban environment. The Stern School of Business is highly competitive with a significantly lower rate of acceptance than NYU as a whole. Unlike some other undergraduate business programs, the Stern School is a four-year curriculum — students must indicate their interest in business on their initial application to NYU.

FIND A PROGRAM TO LAUNCH YOUR DREAM CAREER. WHICH AREA ARE YOU INTERESTED IN?

Looking for the perfect music career?

    music business Degrees

Not everyone who works in the music industry is a musician or a vocalist. In fact, without the many people who handle the business side of the industry, many performers would never succeed in their chosen career. People who attend music business school manage the financial, legal and logistical aspects of the industry, which makes it possible for artists to concentrate on the creative aspects of their career. The demanding music business is highly competitive, and requires as much time, effort and dedication as crafting a career as a performer.

The curriculum of a music business degree blends musical knowledge with business acumen. Students may learn just as much about accounting and entrepreneurship as they do about music theory and harmony. It is precisely this type of unique blend of subject matter that makes it possible for students to succeed in the modern music industry. The highly competitive nature of this field makes earning an appropriate degree absolutely indispensable. Some colleges are offering music business degree programs on campus, but with increasing demand for flexibility, an increasing number of these schools are providing students with the chance to earn a music business degree online.

Before choosing a music business school, it’s important to ensure that it has received the appropriate accreditation. Institutions that have received the National Association of Schools of Music accreditation are a good choice. Additionally, prospective students should look for schools that have earned the approval of an educational organization that has received official recognition from the federal Department of Education. Accreditation by the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools, or ACICS, or another regional accrediting body demonstrates that a college offers an academically rigorous program with well-qualified faculty members.

    Associate’s Degree in Music Business

This two year degree option provides students with an opportunity to explore how business and creativity intersect. This music business degree is suitable for students who are performers and for those who have no musical experience. Curricula are typically designed to provide students with the basics of business and marketing along with exposure to music theory and concepts. Most programs also require the completion of general education credits. Usually, several electives related to the major are selected by the student, with these electives supporting the student’s chosen specialization. Common concentration areas include production of music, music marketing and disc jockey techniques, among others.

Prerequisites for entering an associate’s degree program typically include earning a high school diploma or GED. Many institutions require students to fill out a basic application form before being accepted. Once in the program, students can expect to enroll in courses like:

    • Accounting Principles
    • Introduction to Music Theory
    • Introduction to Business
    • Music Industry Entrepreneurship
    • Recording and Mass Media in the Music Business
    • Studio Music Recording
    • Computers and Technology in the Music Industry
    • Music Production
    • Introduction to Marketing

A number of career possibilities may open up for someone who holds this degree. Among them are:

    • Disc Jockey
    • Session Musician
    • Music Marketing Assistant
    • Assistant Manager for Artists
    • Promoter
    • Broadcast Production

    Bachelor of Science: Music Business

With four years of intensive study and training, people who hold a bachelor’s degree are ready to hit the ground running in the music industry. This type of music business degree provides the student with a more complete overview of the industry as a whole, and allows more time for the student to develop particular areas of interest. Accordingly, students will get to select many electives that support their area of specialization while also gaining a broad based general education that will serve them well in their career.

Basic prerequisites for entering a music business degree program include a high school diploma, SAT scores and an application form. Depending upon the school, other materials, like an essay, may be required for admission. After enrollment, the student will find that a wide variety of classes are available to them. Among them are:

    • Introduction to Music Business
    • Introduction to Music Marketing
    • Trends and Strategies for the Music Business
    • Aural Skills
    • Music Theory
    • Principles of Business Management
    • Business Law
    • Introduction to Recording Studios
    • Music Publishing
    • Intellectual Property and Copyrights
    • Recording Techniques
    • Launching an Entrepreneurial Music Business
    • Introduction to Songwriting

Much of the curriculum depends upon the student’s particular areas of interest, which allows individuals to craft a degree program that is particularly well suited to enable them to enter one of these careers:

    • Business Manager for Artists
    • Record Label Executive
    • Entertainment Attorney
    • Recording Engineer
    • Music Editor
    • Publisher
    • Promoter
    • Public Relations Executive
    • Recording Artist

    Masters in Music Business

Students wanting to acquire advanced business knowledge that is firmly rooted in an artistic atmosphere may choose to pursue a Masters in Music Business. The curriculum at most universities uncovers the structure of the modern music industry so that students may understand it completely and be better prepared to deal with its ever changing environment. Whether students decide to study on campus or online, they may have to complete an internship and an in-depth research project in order to graduate.

Prerequisites to enter one of these competitive programs typically include an undergraduate degree and a satisfactory score on the GRE. Letters of recommendation, work experience and essays or interviews may also be required. Approximately two years of full time study are usually needed to complete all degree requirements.

In most programs, students complete music business courses like:

    • Principles of the Music Business
    • Emerging Music Markets
    • The Music Industry and the Law
    • Concert Management
    • Artist Management

They may also take business courses such as:

    • Management and Leadership
    • Financial Accounting
    • Business Ethics
    • Strategic Marketing
    • Business Law

Earning a Masters in Music Business degree is an excellent way for motivated students to really kick start their career. They will build industry contacts while also adding valuable experience to their resume. When they complete the degree, they may be qualified to hold positions like:

    • Owner of a record label
    • Top supervisor at a talent management firm
    • Managing executive at a publishing company
    • Music business teacher in a variety of academic settings
    • Concert Promoter

    Radiography

A student in the two-year Radiography Program attends lectures and practices the skills being taught in lab settings at the Coleman Health Science Center College. Further hands-on knowledge is gained during clinical experiences in Texas Medical Center institutions and various other hospitals and clinics throughout the area. Clinicals and classes conducted at these locations can begin as early as 7:00 a.m. The student is responsible for transportation to and from these locations as well as parking fees.

An individual who is interested in the Radiography Program is encouraged to complete all required academic courses before submitting an application for admission into the Program. Previous college courses that are transferable to the Radiography degree plan are assets to the applicant. Transfer credit must be approved by the counselor.

An individual accepted into the Program is required to pay a liability insurance fee. The students also must pay a fee each semester for a radiation monitor (dosimeter), a requirement in all clinical education courses. Background checks and drug screening are required on all accepted students and are a condition of continued acceptance in the program. A physical exam completed by a physician with documentation of required immunizations is also a policy for all accepted students. Hepatitis B vaccinations must be completed before students begin the program.

    A Career in Radiography

The Bureau of Labor Statistics, as of 2007 says, Radiographers produce x-ray images of the human body for use in diagnosing medical problems. They prepare patients for radiologic examinations by explaining the procedure, removing articles such as jewelry, through which x rays cannot pass, and positioning patients so that the parts of the body can be appropriately radiographed. To prevent unnecessary radiation exposure, technologists surround the exposed area with radiation protection devices, such as lead shields, or limit the size of the x-ray beam.

Radiographers position radiographic equipment at the correct angle and height over the appropriate area of a patient s body. Using instruments similar to a measuring tape, technologists may measure the thickness of the section to be radiographed and set controls on the machine to produce radiographs of the appropriate density, detail, and contrast. They place the x-ray cassettes under the part of the patient s body to be examined and make the exposure. They develop or process the images.

For fluoroscopic exams, radiographers prepare a solution of contrast medium for the patient to drink, allowing the radiologist, a physician who interprets images, to see soft tissues in the body. Radiologic technologists must follow physicians orders precisely and conform to regulations concerning use of radiation to protect themselves, their patients, and coworkers from unnecessary exposure. In addition to preparing patients and operating equipment, radiologic technologists keep patient records and adjust and maintain equipment. They may also prepare work schedules, evaluate equipment purchases, or manage a radiology department.

    Working Conditions

Most full-time radiologic technologists work about 40 hours a week; they may have evening, weekend, or on-call hours.Physical stamina is important, because technologists are on their feet for long periods and may lift or turn disabled patients. They work at diagnostic machines but may also do some procedures at patients bedsides. Some radiologic technologists travel to patients in large vans equipped with sophisticated diagnostic equipment. Although potential radiation hazards exist in this occupation, they are minimized by the use of lead aprons, gloves, and other shielding devices, as well as by instruments monitoring radiation exposure. Technologists wear badges measuring radiation levels in the radiation area, and detailed records are kept on their cumulative lifetime dose.

    Employment

Radiologic technologists held about 196,000 jobs in 2006. More than half of all jobs were in hospitals. Most of the rest are in physicians offices and clinics, including diagnostic imaging centers; and outpatient care centers.

    Salary

Median annual earnings of radiologic technologists were $48,170 in 2006. The middle 50 percent earned between $39,840 and $57,940. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $32,750, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $68,920. Median annual earnings in the industries employing the largest numbers of radiologic technologists in 2006 were:

    • Medical and diagnostic laboratories $51,280
    • Hospitals 48,830
    • Offices and clinics of medical doctors 45,500

    Certification

Graduates of the HCCS Radiography Program may apply to take the ARRT certification exam. To practice in Texas, radiographers must also hold a certificate from the Texas Department of State Health Services. Any individual with a previous felony conviction should contact the ARRT for a Pre-Certification Application at (651) 687-0048 Ethics Division concerning eligibility requirements.
