  • What is Supply Chain Management, business supply.#Business #supply

Supply Chain Management: What Small Businesses Need to Know

The products that fill the shelves and barrels of your favorite retail store go through quite a journey to find their way to your shopping cart. Any physical good that can be purchased has to go through a supply chain, from manufacturer to supplier to retailer and finally to the consumer. But how do businesses manage their supply chains?

Supply chain management is a conscious effort to run supply chains in the most efficient and effective way possible. Such strategies include product development, sourcing, production and logistics, each of which assists in creating quality products and coordinating their flow to the consumer. The supply chain exists in many different forms, but the most common structure contains four separate entities:

    1. Suppliers. These entities provide the materials needed to create the product, whether they re raw materials or individual parts to a finished product. For example, Apple s iPad comes from a variety of suppliers: Samsung manufactures its processor chips, LG produces the touchscreen display, and Toshiba creates the flash memory.
    2. Manufacturers. This stage of the supply chain entails bringing together all of the parts provided by suppliers to create the finished product. Apple would take each individual part from the suppliers and put them together to create a finished iPad for distribution.
    3. Distributors. These entities store and sell the finished product, either at a physical storefront or through an online store. Locations like Apple stores and Walmart provide physical locations where consumers can buy an iPad, whereas online distributors ship the iPad directly to a consumer s door.
    4. Customers. Consumers create demand for products and ultimately influence the quantity of products and the overall supply chain structure.

The organizations that ultimately create the supply chain are linked together through both physical and informational means. The physical element involves the creation, shipping and storage of goods the obvious, visible part of the process. However, critical to the coordination of goods is the informational element that allows supply chain partners to communicate with one another and control the flow of goods.

Andrew Lynch, president and CEO of Zipline Logistics, told Business News Daily that having a strategy in place for an organized supply chain is vital to the success of a business.

Without a strategy, supply chain and transportation run the risk of becoming cost centers that can negatively impact a brand, Lynch said.

How to choose supply chain partners

A single business can t do everything by itself when it comes to the supply chain, so it s necessary to pick some supply partners. Lynch suggested asking the following questions to help you choose the best supply partners for your business:

    • Can the partner grow with you and serve a larger customer base as your company expands?
    • Can they provide any additional benefit, like niche expertise, helpful technology or other resources?
    • Does their organization match your company values?
    • What do their current or previous customers or partners say about them? Are they honest? Are they responsive?
    • Are they in a good area that drivers can easily reach?
    • What kind of investment do they require upfront? Is the cost necessary, or can you function without it?

    Reducing supply chain risks

Risk management is a key driving force to creating a supply chain. Reducing the costs of a supply chain carry inherent risks of reduced quality and unreliable shipping times. Common practices like outsourcing, offshoring, lean manufacturing and just-in-time all create increased risk levels. Countless industries seek after the right balance of risk and cost, using more modern approaches such as supply chain redundancies, information tracking, flexible supply contracts and risk assessment measures.

Lynch warned against cutting corners to save money on shipments. Rather than adding more overhead, small businesses are better off finding a partner who can take the work of transportation off their plate, he said.

Looking for transactional savings on shipments can hurt businesses in the long run, Lynch added. While $20 to $100 savings will be seen immediately, the long-term costs and impacts are significant.

Lynch also recommends paying careful attention to your transportation provider. He points out that the transportation provider is often the last person to interact with your customer, and so gives the last impression of your brand.

How to handle a disruption in your supply chain

Part of strategically managing your supply chain is being prepared for disruptions. Disruptions can occur for a variety of reason, but it s especially common in the event of natural disasters. In a survey of more than 1,000 businesses, the Travelers Business Risk Index revealed that when it comes to disruptions, the greatest supply chain risk is associated with getting materials from suppliers. This and other supply chain disruptions might become a problem after events like hurricanes, earthquakes, tornadoes, wildfires or other disasters.

Ken Katz, national property director of risk control for Travelers, suggested planning ahead for such disruptions.

According to the Travelers Business Risk Index, only 28 percent of small businesses have a business continuity plan, Katz told Business News Daily. We recommend businesses always prepare for the worst and don t assume that employees and suppliers will know what to do. It s best to have a documented plan that includes information on secondary suppliers and other backups.

Katz said that your business should identify threat; conduct a business impact analysis; create and adopt controls for prevention, mitigation and recovery; and test and adjust your backup plan often so that your business can be prepared and experience the least disruption possible.

In the event of an emergency, you can start to recover by first reaching out to secondary suppliers, said Erika Melander, manufacturing industry lead for Travelers. Communicating with customers is also important, she said.

Regular communication with customers and suppliers is essential until the supply chain has recovered, Melander said. This level of transparency helps to reinforce that there is a plan in place. It is also important to communicate with employees about next steps and how their day-to-day jobs might be affected.

Melander also recommended that businesses obtain proper insurance as early as possible into their operations, so that in the event of a disaster, they ll be able to get things up and running again quickly. She suggested contingent business interruption coverage as a possible insurance solution, and encouraged businesses to regularly check with insurance agents regarding coverage.

Supply Chain Management: What Small Businesses Need to Know

    Introducing eBay Business Supply

Today, we are excited to announce a significant rebrand of our business-to-business (B2B) offering: eBay Business Supply. which brings our Business Industrial category, our SAP Ariba Spot Buy and eBay Wholesale Deals solutions all under one umbrella. The B2B ecommerce opportunity is enormous – and growing: according to Forrester. the market is projected to grow from $780 billion in 2015 to $1.13 trillion in 2020. With eBay Business Supply, we will continue to address this opportunity head on by offering the broadest assortment of inventory, the best value, and a seamless buying and selling experience for all sizes of businesses.

At eBay, we’re always looking for ways to improve the shopping experience for millions of customers as they browse, discover and purchase from an immense selection of inventory. With eBay Business Supply. we’re making it even easier for businesses from SMBs to large enterprises to buy and sell supplies and equipment across more than a dozen major product categories, including Electrical Test Equipment ; MRO Industrial Supply ; Healthcare, Lab Life Science ; Manufacturing Metalworking ; Restaurant Catering ; and Heavy Equipment. And, because we are one of the world’s largest and most trusted marketplaces, we’re able to help companies navigate some of the category barriers that can discourage B2B ecommerce:

    • Selection. eBay is the only one stop shop where customers can find used, refurbished, new, long-tail and in-line selection.
    • Ease. eBay is a cost-effective, low-risk channel with a dedicated integration and account management team – and offers an efficient way to ship B I inventory through our flat rate freight shipping and global shipping program.
    • Trust. We have policies and criteria in place to protect buyers and sellers.
    • Financing. Through our partnership with Express. we create more opportunities for both buyers and sellers: helping buyers access equipment on eBay through financing options and providing sellers with more buyers who have the funds to purchase.

“As more and more businesses recognize the advantage of B2B ecommerce, we’re making some moves to bolster this category to anticipate and incentivize the market,” said Pooja Piyaratna, Divisional Merchandise Manager of Business Industrial at eBay. “Rebranding as eBay Business Supply is the latest step in signaling our commitment to driving this category for the benefit of our customers.”

Over the last few years, eBay has announced new offerings and partnerships within the B2B space for both buyers and sellers:

    • SAP Ariba Spot Buy. eBay partnered with SAP Ariba to build a solution that allows corporate procurement professionals and employees to purchase millions of Facilities MRO, Electrical Test, Technology, Office Supplies, Parts Accessories and many other business items from trusted, vetted eBay sellers within Ariba’s e-procurement solution. Buyers can even compare their negotiated catalog supplier prices with eBay seller prices which are often lower.
    • eBay Wholesale Deals. eBay launched an exclusive marketplace that connects qualified wholesalers—whom we’ve vetted for credibility and low prices—to eBay sellers.

As this category continues to grow, keep an eye out for more news and updates from our eBay Business Supply team.

Bee Hive Starter Kits, Protective Wear, and Beekeeping Supplies

Welcome to Golden-Bee: Your source for Beekeeping Supplies at affordable prices.

Golden-Bee is a leading source for high quality, durable and safe beekeeping supplies and equipment at affordable prices. Our beekeeping products are ideal for everyone, from beginners to professionals.

Beekeeping is rewarding for many reasons, but having fresh, organic honey straight from your own bees is possibly the most rewarding. The health benefits of honey have been well known long before modern medicine appeared. With the right working environments, your bees will yield better results, more honey, and livelier bees. Our beekeeping supplies and equipment are exactly what you need for the best hives because they are all fully tested for safety (for both the beekeeper and the bees), effectiveness and quality before coming to you.

Whether amateur or professional, you need bee equipment you can count on during the collection and harvesting processes. We carry a large selection of honey processing tools, medication and feed for the bees, and protective wear.

Our beekeeper kits are available for hives of any size, and we have kits that you can use to keep your hive active for up to a year. The kits contain medication, supplements, and other treatments you will need for one, two, or three hive installations. The packages contain bee supplies that your hive will need to stay nourished and free of infection, along with treatments that can reduce aggression and increase productivity while maintaining organic standards. You can also order assembled or unassembled hive kits to get you started.

Once you have supplies, it s important to have the right products to protect your equipment and hard work during the cold winter months. Hives become vulnerable while not in use, but we have a full supply of items to keep moths and other pests away from your comb. We ensure our products will not affect the quality of the comb or the bees that return to it once the weather warms up.

The beekeeping suit is one of the most important pieces in beekeeping safety, which is why all of our protective wear is safe tested and made to fit snugly without any openings for bees to get in. Our durable and high quality suits, veils, hats, sweatbands, cowhide gloves, and other protective wear contain easy to reach zippers and Velcro for easy access.

We truly enjoy being the best source of beekeeping equipment for all levels of experience. We offer a guarantee on our products, a friendly, knowledgeable and helpful support staff, and of course thoroughly tested and approved beekeeping supplies.

Browse our selection and contact us today if you have any questions about our beekeeping supplies and starter kits.

    Featured Products

Beekeeping isn t just a hobby. The ancient Egyptians and Greeks kept bees and harvested their honey. wax. and larvae as early as 2500 BC. People have known about the health benefits of honey since times long before modern medicine was invented, and while not much has changed about the bees themselves, the actual beekeeping supplies have gotten better. The right bee supplies can keep you, and the bees, safe during the collection and harvesting processes. Are you an amateur beekeeper who needs the right bee equipment for sale, or a professional that produces your own organic honey? You need bee equipment that you can count on, for your safety and the safety of your bees. Safe working environments yield better results, more honey, and livelier bees. At Golden Bee, we re committed to providing customers with the best beekeeping supplies available.

If you re just getting started and want to know how to begin the process of beekeeping, you re in the right place. We stock many different bee supplies that are right for you. Beekeeping starter kits and bee hive starter kits are available for beginners who want to learn more about bees and natural bee care while staying safe. We have plenty of beekeeping equipment for sale, including protective outerwear, medication and feed for your bees, and more.

    The Tools of the Trade

Need a smoker to sedate your bees during honey collection? How about honey processing tools to make the collection process quick and easy? Golden Bee carries a wide variety of harvesting, transportation, and control bee keeping equipment and parts for your installation. Our beekeeping supplies are hand picked for their effectiveness and their safety.

All of our tools are tested to be safe to use around bees, and safe for our customers too. Our high quality smokers are all selected because they re proven to work when you need them to, and because they re easy to operate. Our smokers are also safe for the beekeeper, with shielding to protect your hands and heavy gauge steel for increased durability. We want you to feel comfortable when you re handling your bees, which is why our bee keeping equipment is also made to be easy to grip while using protective clothing.

    Keep Your Hive Healthy

We offer more than just tools for the beekeeper; we also offer medicine and feed for the bees themselves. Happy bees make more honey, and healthy bees are happy bees. We offer many different packages for hives of any size, which include kits that you can use to keep your hive active for up to a year. Our kits contain medication. supplements, and other treatments that you ll need for one, two, or three hive installations. The packages contain bee supplies that your hive will need to stay nourished and free of infection, along with treatments that can be added to reduce aggression and increase productivity while maintaining organic standards.

Golden Bee also carries supplies that you can use to protect the equipment itself. A hive can be vulnerable during the winter months while not in use, but we carry supplies like Para-Moth Para-Dicholobenzen Crystals that can be used to keep moths away from your comb. All it takes is a few teaspoons and the right treatment schedule to keep your hive free of pests, without harming the quality of the comb or the bees that will be returning to the hive once the weather warms up again.

    Protection Where You Need It

Amazon eyes Office Depot deal to launch office supply business #business #ethics

    #office depot business

    #

A prominent activist investor has taken a stake in Office Depot, believing the workplace supply chain could be near a deal that will clear all regulatory barriers to its merger with Staples, The Post has learned.

The deal would involve Amazon, which is believed to be eyeing the corporate business unit of Office Depot, according to a person familiar with the investor’s thinking.

While no decision has yet been made about whether Jeff Bezos’ $272 billion market-cap company will ink a deal, there has been talk on Wall Street that the chief executive was looking to expand his Amazon Business footprint.

Chatter in recent days centered on Amazon weighing a bid for privately held W.B. Mason, the No. 3 office supplier, a second source said.

Amazon announced in April 2015 that it was starting Amazon Business.

This month, Amazon — answering a Staples subpoena in that chain’s battle with the Federal Trade Commission decision to block the Office Depot merger — said it wanted to keep confidential several operational planning documents that, in detail, explain its business goals and the requested investment that Amazon Business was seeking from the company as a whole to achieve its aims.

While Amazon has its own distribution centers, it likely would use some of Office Depot’s corporate accounts to jump-start its new office supply business, sources said.

An Amazon-Office Depot deal would create a stronger No. 2 player in the sector and help Staples get the FTC to reverse its decision to block the $6 billion deal, one source said.

Staples met with the FTC on March 8 and 9 about a settlement, it said during a pretrial conference on Wednesday.

Staples declined to give specifics, a court official said.

The FTC said during the hearing that it was clear with Staples about what it wants in a settlement and has not seen it yet, the official said.

That news of settlement talks caused Office Depot’s shares to rise 3.1 percent Wednesday, to $5.26. Shares are up 7.1 percent since Feb. 10.

In February 2015, Staples and Office Depot agreed to merge in a cash and stock deal that valued Office Depot at $11 a share.

On Monday, the FTC’s suit to block the merger goes to trial in a Washington, DC, federal court.

The activist believes there could soon be a settlement in the case, the source added.

There is little chance the judge reverses the FTC’s December 4-0 vote to block the deal. sources said.

The FTC believes the merger would cause too much concentration in the national office supplies space.

The FTC, before suing to stop the merger, rejected a settlement offer Staples was proposing to sell $550 million in corporate contract business to Essendant.

In February, Staples announced it signed the deal with Essendant but it is doubtful that divestiture would be enough to ease FTC concerns because Essendant, even with new business, is not large enough to effectively compete with Staples, sources said.

Staples declined comment. Amazon did not return calls.

The international supplier is invited by the buyer to apply for Business Link and join the buyer’s closed community with support in English and Mandarin.

    1. Buyer submits purchase order. The purchase order is based on the Buyer and Seller’s Agreement formed outside of Business Link.
    2. Supplier accepts purchase order. Supplier submits invoice, documents (Bill of Lading or Airway Bill) and payment claims.
    3. Buyer authorises secure payment via Westpac Business Link using the buyer’s credit card. 2

The services of other financial institutions or third party processing institutions may also be used to carry out an International Payment. Westpac will not be liable for any amount deducted by, or payable to, another financial institution involved in carrying out an International Payment.

    Foreign currency conversion cancellation fee

If an International Payment does not proceed for any reason, or a Buyer amends or alters any of the details of that payment, Westpac will need to cancel the underlying foreign exchange contracts. As part of the cancellation process, it may sometimes be necessary to ‘unwind’ the underlying foreign exchange contracts used to lock in a Buyer’s International Payment rate. This will result in a Buyer’s International Payment being cancelled. A different or new rate will also be used in the cancellation process. Depending on market movements in the relevant foreign exchange rates, there could be a cost or gain arising as a result of cancellation. Westpac will pass on to the Buyer any such cost but may, at its discretion, decide to withhold any gains. Westpac will withhold gains if, for example, in its reasonable opinion, the International Payment was not amended or cancelled in good faith by the Buyer.

The amount of Australian dollars a Buyer will receive on conversion back into Australian dollars will depend on the prevailing Spot Rate of Exchange at the time Westpac effects a Buyer’s cancellation request.

We may charge you a tracing fee of $35 per request.

A Buyer may sometimes need to confirm the destination of an International Payment. Westpac can assist a Buyer by tracing the International Payment to confirm if it was deposited to the Seller’s account.

The services of other financial institutions or third party processing institutions may also be used to carry out an International Payment. In many cases, these institutions will impose payment or handling fees and charges and are beyond our control. Westpac will not be liable for any amount deducted by, or payable to, another financial institution involved in carrying out an International Payment.

Fees and charges imposed by other financial institutions or third party processing institutions may be deducted from amounts transferred to the Seller. If this occurs, this means that the Seller will receive less than the Payment Amount.

    Card payment processing fee

    Foreign currency conversion fee

    Business Link

Manage your cash flow more efficiently

    • Use your existing credit cards 1 to support and facilitate payment for imports instead of tapping into cash reserves
    • Take advantage of your card’s interest free payment terms and reward points 2 and utilise your potential early payment benefits
    • Free up your cash flow for other critical business needs.

Take the guesswork out of foreign exchange rates

    • Access competitive real-time exchange rates
    • Know exactly what a purchase will cost in AUD at the time of the transaction.

    Management of your international supplier

    • Manage your international suppliers on 1 platform allowing you to manage and track the entire supply chain process between you and your supplier; keeping you updated at every stage with email notifications
    • Store all important documents at each stage from purchase orders and invoices to shipping and payment.

    Secure payments

    • International payments are made securely via Business Link and processed by Westpac
    • Payments are deposited directly into the supplier’s pre-registered bank account without your sensitive credit card information ever being disclosed to the supplier.

    How it works

Business Link is an end-to-end online platform that facilitates payment for international suppliers by using your existing credit cards 1 with access to competitive real-time exchange rates

The buyer applies for Business Link

The international supplier is invited by the buyer to apply for Business Link and join the buyer’s closed community with support in English and Mandarin.

    1. Buyer submits purchase order. The purchase order is based on the Buyer and Seller’s Agreement formed outside of Business Link.
    2. Supplier accepts purchase order. Supplier submits invoice, documents (Bill of Lading or Airway Bill) and payment claims.
    3. Buyer authorises secure payment via Westpac Business Link using the buyer’s credit card. 2
    4. Payment is sent to the supplier’s pre-registered account.
    5. Buyer receives the goods.

    Business Link fee

    Business Link fee (excluding GST)

    • 2.5% of each Australian dollar amount that is debited to the Card under clause 3.7(b) of Section B
    • 0.25% Business Link Fee (inclusive of GST) 2.75% of each Australian dollar amount that is debited to the Card under clause 3.7(b) of Section B

Amazon eyes Office Depot deal to launch office supply business #sba #loan
