THE LETTER

Feel free to use this letter of support below, submit your own original letter or even a mixture of the two.

AN OPEN LETTER FROM AUSTRALIAN LOCAL BUSINESS OWNERS IN SUPPORT OF MARRIAGE EQUALITY

We, local business owners from across Australia, write to express our support for marriage equality.

We recognise that diversity makes workplaces stronger and more successful. We support the right of our lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer (LGBTIQ) employees to work and live in environments free of prejudice and discrimination, enjoying the essential freedoms experienced by other employees and the broader community.

We believe that individual rights and liberties are critically important. They are essential in the creation of a healthy, harmonious and open society. An equitable society, free of discrimination, allows all employees to function at their best. This has obvious benefits for small businesses. Australia, a nation with a robust democratic tradition, would also benefit greatly from allowing all its citizens to be treated equally.

The Australian people are increasingly supportive of marriage equality, with a recent study showing 72 per cent believe same-sex couples should be allowed to marry. We agree. Globally, over 20 countries have passed laws to allow same-sex marriage, including the United States of America, Ireland, New Zealand, Canada and Great Britain which did so with lower support for marriage equality than Australia is seeing right now. Times have changed.

Not only is marriage equality the only truly fair option, but it is also a sound economic option, given that a happy workforce is a productive one. To remain competitive, and to attract top talent from around the world, organisations – and nations – must create a fair and respectful environment for all.

Equality in the workplace works; Discrimination does not.

We support the right for all our employees to have equal opportunities in life. We therefore support marriage equality.

What type of accounts should I use for ATM businesses cash flow ?

I use the cash accrual accounting style for my ATM business. I cycle cash through my ATM’s that I have entered into my QB as owners equity originally. I am wanting to balance the checking account. When that money cycles back through to my bank account and gets electronically deposited what is it considered? Is it an “other assett” or what? Then when I withdrawl to load machines again what type of account should I use for the withdrawls, a “short term liability” account? I really need some clearity.

You might say the cash is my reaccuring supplies.

Why do you want to report this?

I think I am tracking with Mistyblue. I have the income account for the surcharge fees that users of the machine owe me. The expense account for any fees for the particular bank where my money is cycled through. But what about the ST liability account. are you saying use this account type for the electronic deposits from user’s of my machine’s back to my account and use it for my withdrawls to load back into my machine. I thought I would need a “plus” and a “minus” sort of set up with the accounts?

This is how I have done this: I’ve set up a bank account for the ATM in qb as well a income account and I used a short term liability account. Of course a bank service charge account for the ATM.

The short term liability account is the cycle account (withdraw and well as put back) – The income part I separate to its own income account. This way tracking income, expense, and your main cycle account. Which bottom line each rec balances. Note: I would check as well with your accountant on according to your area on sales tax requirements.

More Actions

People come to QuickBooks Learn Support for help and answers we want to let them know that we’re here to listen and share our knowledge. We do that with the style and format of our responses. Here are five guidelines:

  1. Keep it conversational. When answering questions, write like you speak. Imagine you’re explaining something to a trusted friend, using simple, everyday language. Avoid jargon and technical terms when possible. When no other word will do, explain technical terms in plain English.
  2. Be clear and state the answer right up front. Ask yourself what specific information the person really needs and then provide it. Stick to the topic and avoid unnecessary details. Break information down into a numbered or bulleted list and highlight the most important details in bold.
  3. Be concise. Aim for no more than two short sentences in a paragraph, and try to keep paragraphs to two lines. A wall of text can look intimidating and many won’t read it, so break it up. It’s okay to link to other resources for more details, but avoid giving answers that contain little more than a link.
  4. Be a good listener. When people post very general questions, take a second to try to understand what they’re really looking for. Then, provide a response that guides them to the best possible outcome.
  5. Be encouraging and positive. Look for ways to eliminate uncertainty by anticipating people’s concerns. Make it apparent that we really like helping them achieve positive outcomes.
Do you still have a question?

Ask your question to the community. Most questions get a response in about a day.

VA Caregiver Support

Caregiver Services

You may know that VA provides benefits and services for Veterans, but did you know that VA also has a number of services designed specifically to support you in your role as a Family Caregiver? VA values your commitment as a partner in our pledge to care for those who have “borne the battle,” and we have several support and service options designed with you in mind. The programs are available both in and out of your home to help you care for the Veteran you love and for yourself.

Caregiver Support
Asking for help isn’t always easy especially if you’re not exactly sure what kind of support would be the best fit for your needs. Learn more about how VA’s trained professionals can help you find the services and support that are right for you and the Veteran you care for.

Caregiver Support Line
With VA’s Caregiver Support Line 1-855-260-3274 assistance is just a quick phone call away. Whether you’re in need of immediate assistance or have questions about what services you may be eligible for, the caring licensed professionals who answer the support line can:

  • Tell you about the assistance available from VA.
  • Help you access services.
  • Connect you with the Caregiver Support Coordinator at a VA Medical Center near you.
  • Just listen, if that’s what you need right now.

If you’re just getting started with VA, calling the Caregiver Support Line is a great first step to take to learn more about the support that’s available to you.

VA’s Caregiver Support Line

Caregiver Support Coordinator
Your local Caregiver Support Coordinator is a licensed professional who can support you by matching you with services for which you are eligible, and providing you with valuable information about resources that can help you stay smart, strong and organized as you care for the Veteran you love. Find your local Caregiver Support Coordinator by visiting our Help Near Home page and entering your zip code.

Peer Support for Caregivers
VA has developed a Caregiver Peer Support Mentoring Program to connect Caregivers to one another, to provide support, and to learn from each other. Peer Support Mentoring provides an opportunity for Caregivers to share their experience, wisdom, skills and passion with each other and benefit from the guidance of others.

Caregivers of Veterans of all eras are eligible to participate in the VA Caregiver Peer Support Mentoring Program, both as Mentors and as Mentees. Mentors and Mentees communicate using email, telephone, and letter writing depending on what works best for both of them. Mentors receive training before being paired with another Caregiver and are volunteers with their local VA medical center Voluntary Services Department. Caregivers participating in the Caregiver Peer Support Mentoring Program agree to participate for 6 months, but many participate for much longer.

Not sure if you are ready for this, but would like to try it out? VA also offers a one-time connection through the Compassionate Connections Program for those Caregivers who many need some brief support from an experienced Mentor but are not ready or able to commit to a longer-term mentoring relationship.

To learn more, please contact your local Caregiver Support Coordinator who can be located by using the zip code look-up .

Caregiver Services
Below are descriptions of various services available to Family Caregivers of Veterans. If you’d like additional information or are interested in signing up for any of the services listed below, contact VA’s Caregiver Support Line or your local Caregiver Support Coordinator for assistance (see above).

Adult Day Health Care (ADHC) Centers
ADHC Centers are a safe and active environment with constant supervision designed for Veterans to get out of the home and participate in activities. It is a time for the Veteran you care for to socialize with other Veterans while you, the Family Caregiver, get some time for yourself. ADHC Centers employ caring professionals who will assess a Veteran’s rehabilitation needs and help a Veteran accomplish various tasks so he or she can maintain or regain personal independence and dignity. The Veteran you care for will participate in rehabilitation based on his or her specific health assessment during the day (ADHC centers are generally open Monday through Friday during normal business hours). The ADHC Centers emphasize a partnership with you, the Veteran you care for and Centers’ staffs.

Home-Based Primary Care
Home-Based Primary Care (HBPC) is a program designed to deliver routine health care services to your home when the Veteran you care for has medical issues that make it challenging for him or her to travel. Home-Based Primary Care is staffed with medical professionals who will come to your home. Some of their services are primary care and nursing, managing medication, and helping plan and put together nutritious and tasty meals. Home-Based Primary Care can also include physical rehabilitation, mental health care for your Veteran, social work and referrals to VA and community services. This program can help ease the worry and stress of having to bring a Veteran to and from a VA medical center for routine medical appointments.

Skilled Home Care
The Skilled Home Care service provides a medical professional who comes to your home to help care for a homebound Veteran. Some of the care a Veteran can receive includes basic nursing services and physical, occupational, or speech therapies. To be eligible for this service, a Veteran must be homebound, which means he or she has difficulty traveling to and from appointments and so is in need of receiving medical services at home. The Skilled Home Care service is similar to Home-Based Primary Care, but it involves VA purchasing care for a Veteran from a licensed non-VA medical professional.

Homemaker and Home Health Aide Program
Feeding and bathing another person can be very stressful, physically tasking, and time-consuming for you. Often times, taking care of a Veteran’s needs leaves no time for you to take care of your own needs. The Homemaker and Home Health Aide Program is designed to help a Veteran with personal care needs. Your local VA medical center can help arrange for a home health aide who will come to your home on a regular schedule to allow you time to take care of your own needs. Caring for yourself helps you stay strong for yourself and the Veteran you care for.

Home Telehealth
We know how difficult or challenging it can be to get the Veteran you care for to a VA medical center for assistance. The Home Telehealth program is designed to give you ready access to a care coordinator by using technology (e.g. telephone, computers) in your home. The Home Telehealth program enhances and extends care management to you, the Family Caregiver. The program is typically offered to individuals who live at a distance from a VA Medical Center. Home Telehealth services can also include education and training or online and telephone support groups. Please contact your Caregiver Support Coordinator to discuss which telehealth programs are available at your VA.

Respite Care
As a Family Caregiver, it can be hard to find time for a much-needed break from your daily routine and care responsibilities so that you have some time for yourself. Respite is time for relaxing and renewing your own energy, and respite care can provide you with the time to do that. If a Veteran requires a Caregiver, you are eligible to receive up to 30 days of respite care per year. The care can be offered in a variety of settings including at your home or through temporary placement of a Veteran at a VA Community Living Center, a VA-contracted Community Residential Care Facility, or an Adult Day Health Care Center. Respite care may also be provided in response to a Family Caregiver’s unexpected hospitalization, a need to go out of town, or a family emergency. Staying strong for your Veteran means staying strong yourself. By taking an opportunity to be refreshed through respite care, you may be amazed at how your fresh outlook will help you and your Veteran.

Home Hospice Care
During the advanced stages of a terminal disease, Home Hospice Care can offer comfort and supportive services for you and the Veteran you care for in your own home. The professionals who provide Home Hospice Care understand the challenges you face and are there to help you and the Veteran you care for ease into the final stages of life. An interdisciplinary team of health care providers and volunteers from a local community hospice agency provide the services during this sad and challenging time. The team is there for you 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Bereavement care (grief counseling) is also available for you and other immediate family members.

Manage stress: Strengthen your support network

Stress is a normal and unavoidable part of life — but too much stress can affect your emotional and physical wellbeing. According to APA’s 2015 Stress in America survey 1. average stress levels today are slightly higher than they were in 2014. On a scale of 1 to 10 where 10 is “a great deal of stress” and one is “little or no stress,” American adults rated their stress level at a 5.1 today, up from 4.9 in 2014. But worrisomely, a significantly greater percentage of adults reported experiencing a stress level of 8 or higher on the 10-point scale. Twenty-four percent of American adults reported this extreme level of stress in 2015, up from 18 percent the previous year.

Emotional support is an important protective factor for dealing with life’s difficulties. The 2015 survey found the average stress level for those with emotional support was 5.0 out of 10, compared to 6.3 for those without such support.

Loneliness has been associated with a wide variety of health problems including high blood pressure, diminished immunity, cardiovascular disease and cognitive decline. 2 In fact, low levels of social support have even been linked to increased risk of death from cardiovascular disease, infectious diseases and cancer. 3

The good news is that there are ways to seek out such support, and to nurture your supportive relationships.

The benefits of social support

As important as social support is, many Americans don’t feel they have access to this valuable resource. When asked if there is someone they can ask for emotional support, such as talking over problems or helping make difficult decisions, 70 percent said yes. However, more than half (55 percent) also said they could have used at least a little more emotional support.

In fact, experts say, almost all of us benefit from social and emotional support. And though it may seem counterintuitive, having strong social support can actually make you more able to cope with problems on your own, by improving your self-esteem and sense of autonomy.

You don’t need a huge network of friends and family to benefit from social support, however. Some people find camaraderie among just a handful of people, be they co-workers, neighbors or friends from their church or religious institution, for instance.

Yet social skills don’t always come naturally. Some people have trouble making social connections. Many others lose established connections due to life changes such as retirement, relocation or the death of a loved one. In any case, it’s possible to forge new connections to reap the benefits of a healthy support network.

Grow your support network

Cast a wide net. When it comes to your social supports, one size doesn’t fit all. You may not have someone you can confide in about everything — and that’s okay. Maybe you have a colleague you can talk to about problems at work, and a neighbor who lends an ear when you have difficulties with your kids. Look to different relationships for different kinds of support. But remember to look to people you can trust and count on, to avoid disappointing, negative interactions that can make you feel worse.

Be proactive. Often people expect others to reach out to them, and then feel rejected when people don’t go out of their way to do so. To get the most out of your social relationships, you have to make an effort. Make time for friends and family. Reach out to lend a hand or just say hello. If you’re there for others, they’ll be more likely to be there for you. And in fact, when it comes to longevity, research suggests that providing social support to friends and family may be even more important than receiving it. 4

Take advantage of technology. It’s nice to sit down with a friend face-to-face, but it isn’t always possible. Luckily, technology makes it easier than ever before to stay connected with loved ones far away. Write an email, send a text message or make a date for a video chat. Don’t rely too heavily on digital connections, however. Some research suggests that face-to-face interactions are most beneficial.

Follow your interests. Do you like to hike, sing, make jewelry, play tennis, get involved in local politics? You’re more likely to connect with people who like the things you like. Join a club, sign up for a class or take on a volunteer position that will allow you to meet others who share your interests. Don’t be discouraged if you don’t make friends overnight. Try to enjoy the experience as you get to know others over time.

Seek out peer support. If you’re dealing with a specific stressful situation — such as caring for a family member or dealing with a chronic illness — you may not find the support you need from your current network. Consider joining a support group to meet others who are dealing with similar challenges.

Improve your social skills. If you feel awkward in social situations and just don’t know what to say, try asking simple questions about the other person to get the ball rolling. If you’re shy, it can be less intimidating to get to know others over shared activities — such as a bike ride or a knitting class — rather than just hanging out and talking. If you feel particularly anxious in social situations, consider talking to a therapist with experience in social anxiety and social-skills training.

Ask for help. If you lack a strong support network and aren’t sure where to start, there are resources you can turn to. Places of worship, senior and community centers, local libraries, refugee and immigrant groups, neighborhood health clinics and local branches of national organizations such as Catholic Charities or the YMCA/YWCA may be able to help you identify services, support groups and other programs in your community.

Seek professional help

If you’re feeling stressed and don’t have anyone to rely on, psychologists can help. As experts in human behavior, psychologists can help you develop strategies to manage stress and improve your social skills. Use the APA’s Psychologist Locator Service wbrzdvtwbave to find a psychologist in your area. You can also visit www.mentalhealth.gov. a website of the U.S. Department of Health Human Services that offers resources in English and Spanish.

The drama follows Jenny as she meets her patients and learns to love the people who live in the East End.

    Desktop Support Technician Salary

Job Description for Desktop Support Technician

Desktop support technicians are usually the first people who are called when something goes wrong with a desktop computer in their company or the company’s network. The duties range from remote desktop assistance to providing support over the telephone to troubleshooting issues that arise with computers. Desktop support technicians must prioritize the issues they receive. For example, a computer that completely crashes is usually considered a high priority over someone who can’t figure out how to send an email.

Desktop support technicians may also serve other IT department roles such as ensuring that all of the computers in their company’s network are backed up, safe and secure. They may also deploy security updates to all the systems in their companies’ servers and computers to make sure they are never compromised. In addition, they may be required to show staff members how to use their company’s computer programs and networks and how to adhere to security standards.

The educational requirements for desktop support technicians generally include having an associate’s or bachelor’s degree in the IT field or a related area of study. Certain companies will accept those with a high school diploma or a GED if they have a sufficient amount of work experience in the IT field.

    Desktop Support Technician Tasks

    • Format, install, set up, maintain, and troubleshoot desktop and laptop computers with and for end users.
    • Coordinate with vendors to resolve problems.
    • Add or replace memory, new keyboards, motherboards, and other components.
    • Set up and troubleshoot domains, user accounts and software accounts.
    • Configure, test, and troubleshoot network connectivity and wireless access for local and remote computers or devices.

Winning grants and free support for your business: It’s a RAPP –

    #grants for small businesses

    #

Winning grants and free support for your business: It’s a RAPP

There are many opportunities for businesses to obtain free support and grants, both at start-up and during growth and development.

However, keeping up to date with what is available is a task in itself, with schemes appearing and disappearing on a regular basis.

Competition is high and success does not come easy.

If you follow the RAPP process when applying for grants and support, you will improve your chance of success.

    The RAPP process

R esearch – find out what grants and support are available.

A pplicant suitability – when you identify an opportunity, ensure you meet the criteria or conditions required for the funding before spending time on an application.

P reparation – take time to prepare and tailor the application to meet the specific criteria and conditions. Alternatively, P can stand for a professional who has the skill set and knowledge of the type of grant you are seeking.

P atience – take time completing your application (but without missing deadlines) and be patient waiting for the result!

Financial support in the form of grants can be found at three levels. National grants primarily focus on growth and capital investment, such as the government’s Growth Accelerator scheme, while regional grants come from a local board specifically set up to help a region that has government and local authority support.

Local grants may be available from a local council, for example subsidised rents for new start-up businesses or funding to help tidy up a high street retail unit.

There are also European grants and funding support, details of which can be found at UK Trade and Investment .

Where you live or trade may significantly increase your chances of success of getting funding, particularly if your business is in an area defined as economically disadvantaged.

It is not unknown for businesses to set up in or move to an area where regional or local assistance is more readily available.

When looking for or considering grant options, four points generally apply.

    1. Nothing is free; typically you must be prepared to put in some of your own funds. It is extremely rare for a grant to finance the total cost of, say, a start-up or project, unless it is for a very small amount. Many grants require match funding ie you need to match the funding from the grant provider.

For example, Growth Accelerator is a government-backed scheme providing mentor support, coaching and workshops for businesses looking for rapid growth.

The business has to pay a contribution towards the assistance; the amount depends on the size of the business, with the government contributing to the overall cost of the support.

A grant does mean that you are not giving up part of the ownership of your business, as you would if you were seeking equity funding or repaying the money and interest as you would on bank borrowing.

    2. Grants are generally available for a specific project, for example development of a new product or job creation.

Therefore your application needs to meet the criteria for which the grant or support is being provided. Grants are not generally available for just starting a business.

    3. The grant scheme provider will have objectives, strategies or aims which the funding supports, for example helping with youth employment.

Understand what the objectives or aims are when completing the application.

    4. You must have a business plan that explains what you require the funding for and which is tailored to the grant provider’s specific criteria and conditions.

A blanket application or plan is not going to work. On most occasions, your business plan will have to be entered into the provider’s prescribed application form.

Do not just think of grants and support as financial support. Other types of free support can come in many guises.

For example, when opening your business bank account you may be offered free book keeping software, and many local councils and chambers of commerce offer free training seminars on topics such as social media.

The type of product or service for which you are seeking funding supporting has a major impact on your chances of success. Key areas for which grants and support are readily found are:

    Innovation

There are a wide range of schemes and support to encourage research and development. The Technology Strategy Board (TSB) provides grants and support to help develop new products and services and put them in a position to be brought to market.

    Energy and environment

here are schemes specifically for developments that will improve energy efficiency or reduce environmental impact. Natural England lists a number on their website .

    Training

There is plenty of funding and support is available to develop skills, including those of the business owner, as well as support for new employees where the business will be providing training and development.

For example, the National Apprenticeship Service provides advice and support on starting a subsidised apprenticeship. Alternatively, it could mean taking on an intern from the local university for the summer with the university providing match funding to pay the student’s salary.

    Exports

Politicians’ emphasis on exports driving the economic recovery have led to considerable support and assistance for businesses looking to export the goods they manufacture. UK Trade Investment provide funding and subsided advice and services to help business export their products.

Business grants are notoriously hard to come by, but there is assistance out there if you know where to look. Follow the RAPP and hopefully you will be one of the successful ones. Good luck!

Once your logo has been loaded onto our website you may wish to place this logo on your own website to show your support. Please backlink to our main web page: australianmarriageequali ty.org

You may also wish to print this poster and place it in your front window. Included in that download is a meme to use on social media.

    E-mail Listserves. Start Your Own

Oscar Sodani is a founder of Help2Go and owner of Help2Go Networks. an IT consulting firm in the Washington D.C. area. Oscar holds the CISSP certification as well as industry certifications from Microsoft, Cisco and Novell.

With the exponential growth of e-mail, e-mail lists, commonly called listserves have become very popular. Listserves can be used in one of two ways:

    a) You can send out information to all your members/customers.
    b) You can create a discussion group that allows all of your members/customers to speak amongst themselves.

Communication is the heart of a business or organization. If you own a business, you need to keep in constant communication with suppliers, distributors, and most importantly, your customers. If you are running an organization, you must disseminate information quickly and efficiently to all of your members. The goal in both cases is to keep your friends close and in the loop. That way, they’ll keep coming back for more.

E-mail has become a ubiquitous part of our lives. Nearly everyone has at least one e-mail address. Many people have more than one! E-mail addresses are being given out for free by the major Internet portals, such as Yahoo and Microsoft.

    Why create a listserve?

First we’ll talk about option (a). Listserves allow you to send out information to all of your subscribers by using a single, easy to remember e-mail address. For instance, instead of remembering ALL of the e-mail addresses of people that would like to receive the Help2Go newsletter, I just send ONE e-mail to a special address, which automatically does the work of passing that e-mail on to thousands of people.

The listserve subscribers will not be able to reply to my message — this type of listserve is for sending OUT information only. If you use this type of listserve, you must also give your customers an e-mail address to which they can submit questions. Help2Go’s e-mail address is posted prominently in all of our newsletters.

Option (b) allows for a sharing of ideas between your listserve subscribers. This is often used in an academic environment so that students can converse with the teacher and each other, but it also has its uses in a business or nonprofit environment.

A business can host a discussion about uses of their product, tips, and troubleshooting. By using the collaborative, helpful spirit of an Internet community, your customers will be able to help each other with problems and therefore lower your business’ customer support costs.

An organization can host such a list to further the discussion of ideas pertaining to the organization’s purpose. Not only does it offer a sounding board for your organization’s members, but you will find that the discussion will provide dozens of new ideas and approaches that you might have never discovered. The discussion will also keep your members interested and informed about your cause, which will only serve to improve your membership rolls.

    Creating a listserve

OK, you’re convinced. Now, how can you go about setting up a listserve of your own? If your company has a dedicated mail server on the Internet, you should look into L-Soft’s Listserv software. L-Soft pioneered the whole listserve software industry and has the best quality products available.

However, if your organization or business doesn’t have money to spend on a listserve, there are great options available. Several Internet companies have sprouted up in the past few years, offering listserve services for free. The most popular are Yahoo Groups and MSN Groups.

A caveat: these free services will add a sentence or an ad to the bottom of each e-mail sent through the service. It’s pretty innocuous, and we think it is well worth the services that you get. Try it out!

We greatly prefer Yahoo Groups, where Help2Go’s own email list is based, and so now we’re going to take you through the steps to create your very own listserve for free. (You may want to print this article out now, so you can refer to it as a reference).

A Yahoo Groups Listserve: Step by Step

    1) First, click here to go to the Yahoo Groups site.
    2) Click on the link to Start a Group Now .
    3) If you’ve never registered at Yahoo before, click on the link that says Sign Up Now. Otherwise, skip to step 7.
    4) Fill out the registration form and agree to the license agreement (after reading it, of course).
    5) Next, an e-mail will be sent to you asking you to confirm your new membership. Follow the instructions in the e-mail.
    6) Once you are confirmed, return to the Yahoo Groups web site and click on Start a Group Now (it may ask you to sign-in with your Yahoo ID and password.
    7) Now we have reached the Group configuration page. You will need to fill in the required fields and choose how you want your list to act. The different questions are explained below:

    Yahoo Directory
Yahoo keeps a directory of all the groups their service hosts. Choose an appropriate category and sub-category for the group you are creating.

    Type of Group
    You have three choices now.
    * Unmoderated means that any subscriber can post any message to the group. Choose this option if you want a discussion-type list (option (b) at the beginning of this article). However, do not choose this option if you are afraid of hostile or profane posts.
    * Moderated means that any e-mail sent by a subscriber to the list must first be approved by you before the rest of the group can see it. This is also for a discussion-type list. This demands significantly more time and effort than an unmoderated list, but you won’t have to worry about profane, hostile, or off-topic posts.
    * Newsletter/announcement is for lists where only you send out information (option (a) at the beginning of this article). No-one can respond directly to the list, so only your emails are seen by your subscribers.

    Membership
Your list can be Open. meaning that anyone who stumbles upon it can join freely and without your permission. Otherwise, your list can be Moderated/Restricted. so that only you can approve new subscribers to the list.

    Descriptions Language
Next, you must describe your group, both briefly and at length. The last option is to choose a primary language for your list.

    8) Read the Terms of Service. and then click the Accept button.
    9) The final step is to invite people to join your list. You don’t have to complete this section now — you can always invite more people to subscribe whenever you want.

Once you have finished all the steps, you will be presented with a link to your group’s home page. It should look something like this:
    http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mygroupname

This web page is your groups’ new home on the web. This is where you administer every facet of your new list. If you chose to have a moderated/restricted list, then you may be spending a lot of time on this page, accepting members and approving posts. However, if you created an open list or a newsletter, then you may not have to see this page at all!

The greatest feature of Yahoo Groups is its flexibility. There are many other sites out there that provide a similar service. We just chose Yahoo Groups for our tutorial because we felt that it was the easiest to use.

Have fun creating those listserves! And if you create an interesting group, send us an invitation to join!

Winning grants and free support for your business: It’s a RAPP –

Good luck!

    • your organisation’s logo
    • the web address to which we should backlink your logo

Once your logo has been loaded onto our website you may wish to place this logo on your own website to show your support. Please backlink to our main web page: australianmarriageequali ty.org

You may also wish to print this poster and place it in your front window. Included in that download is a meme to use on social media.

Good luck!

We want the TVT, TVT-O and TOT medical devices and mesh grafts for hernia repairs, stress incontinence, prolapse, bladder and bowel disorders to be stopped and taken off the market.

Article Serious Concerns with our Surgeons in the UK and the Lax Support from the Governing Bodies NICE and the MHRA

An urgent review is required on the medical devices TVT, TVTO, TOT and the use of mesh graft for hernia repair surgery plus the Governing Bodies NICE and the MHRA who regulate these medical devices.

The polypropylene surgical synthetic mesh used in the medical devices is the source of the problem and we want this surgery stopped. Many people around the UK are finding it extremely difficult to contact an experienced surgeon to treat mesh related complications and unfortunately many inexperienced surgeons are going ahead with what appears to be guess work surgery and making matters worse for their patients.

It is unbelievable to realize that one piece of mesh can cause such devastation not only to our health but it has also affected our quality of life. There are people who have lost their homes, careers, marriages, family and friends.

The greedy practices of the pharmaceutical companies, the un-educated on these medical devices, egos getting in the way of good surgical practice and also through ignorance from our governing bodies they have allowed these products to be used and it still continues today.

This petition is not just for sufferers to sign, we need everyone to sign it, as one lady said to me the whole globe should be signing it Please make her wish come true she is in so much pain and discomfort at this time along with many thousands of people.

That’s exactly what it seemed like to me as I read your first post.

Have they not done a colonoscopy relative to whatever was seen in the CT scan in the bowel?
Or maybe the plan is chemo for reduction, then scope-and-remove?

Try to find out what chemo regimen they are proposing; ‘at home’ sounds like Xeloda pills (5-FU) which sounds right for an initial reduction treatment.
Avastin (clinical IV) would be appropriate for the mets to lung and liver, BUT would require a 28-day cessation before attempting any surgery.

Try to do some ‘Dr. Google’ references from reputable sites (American Cancer Societ, Colon Cancer Alliance, National Institutes of Health) for reference, so that you’re giving information, not you/our ‘amateur medical opnions’.

Not sure why there not doing a colonoscopy. Maybe they don’t need to know if it’s already been more or less confirmed by ct.

Lesion, tumor, mass–I think they’re all the same thing, although mass probably refers to what they find before they confirm that it’s a tumor. I think some doctors like to say lesion better than tumor. It has a less ominous sound. But they’re not fooling anyone. They all refer to something growing where it shouldn’t be.

Specifically to answer your/his question, just from a general online medical dictionary :
Lesion. an abnormal change in structure of an organ or part due to injury or disease ; especially. one that is circumscribed and well defined.
Tumor (tumour). an abnormal benign or malignant new growth of tissue that possesses no physiological function and arises from uncontrolled usually rapid cellular proliferation.

Tumors are lesions. Not all lesions are tumors, so the lab work, imaging, biopsy etc. will tell if it is Stage IV or not, in the friend’s case.

I agree the language may be purposely softened or vague. cancer is more of a loaded term than lesion or mass for most people. We just get too suspicious ourselves, here, having been through all this stuff. Remember though, at this point with no biopsy they are still suspecting the possibility of Stage IV CRC, based on presentation and their experience. The real diagnosis is still to come.

Could these new eye drops cure cataracts?

A new study reports a natural compound that can clear up cataracts. Photo by WIN-Initiative/Getty Images.

If you live long enough, chances are you’ll get cataracts.

Cataracts, a condition in which the lens of the eye becomes cloudy, are linked to nearly half of the world’s cases of blindness. primarily in low-income countries that lack access to surgery. Cataracts also cause vision problems for 94 million people worldwide.

A study released this week shows that a natural chemical, produced in our bodies, can uncloud cataracts. The findings were made in rabbits and dogs, but if they hold true for humans, the chemical could greatly reduce the need for eye surgery to treat the condition, researchers say. But some scientists are skeptical of the finding.

The first signs of cataracts may appear as early as 30 or 40. though vision problems don’t typically start until 60.

“The population burden is huge. Basically everyone gets them by the time that they hit 80 or 90 years old,” said J. Fielding Hejtmancik, a geneticist at the National Institutes of Health who wasn’t involved in the study.

Throughout our lives, cells in the lens of our eyes migrate from the outer region of the lens to the center. As they do this, they stretch. Whole structural portions of the cell, like the nucleus and mitochondria, break down and eventually disappear entirely, clouding our vision in the process. The cells in the outer rim of the lens are young, while the cells in the center you’ve had your whole life.

The life of an eye lens. New lens cells, which are modified skin cells, start on the upper rim of the eye s lens and migrate to its equator. The cells squeeze inwards and then elongate, creating a stack of layers like the innards of an onion. At the same time, the cells ditch their machinery, like its DNA-packed nucleus and mitochondria, in order to keep the lens clear. Courtesy of Moreau K.L. and King J.A.,Trends Mol Med. 2012.

Lens cells are stuffed to the brim with proteins called crystallins. In fact, the protein content in lens cells is greater than any other cell in the body. Even so, the supportive covering of the eye remains transparent, allowing light to project the picture of the world onto our retina. The key to this clarity comes from how the crystallins are arranged. Like open window blinds, the proper orientation lets light through.

Many factors tweak the structure of these proteins over a lifetime, causing them to clump together and obstruct vision.

UV light exposure is one offender; it oxidizes proteins, changing their structure. Some genetic mutations can create these clumps too, leading to cataracts early in life, which is where ophthalmologist Kang Zhang of the University of California, San Diego found a clue for the new treatment.

“By screening families across the world for mutations that affect vision, we found four kids in two families with genetic aberrations in an enzyme called lanosterol synthase,” said Zhang, whose team reported the findings July 22 in Nature .

As its name suggests, this enzyme makes lanosterol an oily compound found in the skin or in waxy substances like lanolin, a substance used to protect and treat skin. Zhang and his colleagues showed that the mutations shut down that enzyme.

The researchers suspected that the lanosterol prevented the clumping of proteins in the human eye. To test that, they grew lens cells with crystallin clumps in a Petri dish. And indeed, after adding lanosterol to mix, the protein aggregates dissipated. Zhang’s team suspects that lanosterol breaks apart the crystallin clumps like a detergent splits dirt.

Buoyed by this result, the team tested whether eye drops of lanosterol could clear up age-related cataracts in dogs over the course of six weeks. A trained examiner then looked at before and after pictures of the eyes, and scored them based on a veterinary scale for canine cataracts.

“We saw an increase in the lens transparency and also decreased cloudiness of the cataract,” Zhang said, suggesting that lanosterol reversed the course of the disease. And since lanosterol is a naturally-occurring compound in our bodies, the side effects might be minimal in future human trials, he said.

Canine eyes with naturally occurring cataracts, before and after receiving lanosterol treatment. Controls (two columns on right) show dog eyes that didn t receive treatment. Courtesy of Zhao et al. Nature, 2015.

So that’s it case closed cure for cataracts found, right? Not so fast. Some outside experts are skeptical.

“It is very difficult to determine conclusively the effect of any reagent, including lanosterol, on cataracts,” said University of Washington biologist John Clark, who is also president of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, the world’s largest eye and vision research organization.

Clark points to the fact that the study didn’t directly look at whether the lanosterol deficiency caused crystallin clumps in the four kids with cataracts. Historically, these clumps would be examined if their lenses were removed after surgery, he said, but this study didn’t mention such an investigation.

There is also a chance that lanosterol keeps the membranes of lens cells from rupturing, another contributor to cataracts, Clark said.

“Not all cataracts are the same, and it is not a single disease,” UCLA ophthalmologist Joseph Horowitz said. Some cataracts become extremely hard depending on the stage of the disease, he said. As clumps form over the years, they become tougher to penetrate, and Horowitz questions the compound’s ability to break it down.

Zhang admits that lanosterol needs several more years of study before it’s ready human trials and agreed that the drug likely won’t break hard cataracts. But as all cataracts start as mild to moderate cases, he said, early intervention with lanosterol might stop future clumping.

“We did everything we can do experimentally to show lanosterol can dissolve crystallin protein aggregations in cell cultures, in rabbit and dog cataract lenses, Zhang said. “Obviously, we need to do more and our data need confirmation from other researchers. This is just a beginning.”

Horowitz’s skepticism stems in part from prior natural compounds that have been falsely marketed as cures for cataracts, such as the antioxidant carnosine (or N-acetylcarnosine).

“Carnosine is snake oil,” he said. “It isn’t approved by the FDA. It isn’t approved the Eye Institute. And only one group showed that it could deaggregate lens proteins,” Horowitz said. “But it’s a natural product, so people can buy it in a health store.”

Like Alzheimer’s disease or Parkinson’s disease, cataracts fall into a category of condition where people crave a “magic bullet” that can cure everybody, but Clark says such a drug is unlikely.

“Problems of aging, such as cataracts, are complex and multifactorial. We’re in a time of great optimism where we can quantitatively measure individual human diversity,” Clark said. While the idea of a magic bullet may still inspire us, scientifically we need to seize this moment to learn about the myriad nature of biomedical problems of aging, like cataracts, to improve the quality of life of our society, he said.

Hejtmancik agrees, but adds that Zhang’s research advances our understanding: “I view the research as opening a new door and pointing in a new direction in cataract therapy.”
