Ad Buyers to TV: You Keep Raising Rates, We Quit Buying Ads

Ad Buyers to TV: You Keep Raising Rates, We Quit Buying Ads

Dave Campanelli isn t playing your game anymore, television executives.

As we head into the biggest week of the year for TV ad sales, Campanelli, one of the major players in the business of buying spots for advertisers, says his clients are are fed up with paying huge year-over-year pricing increases, whether ratings are up or down.

Campanelli, director of national TV at Horizon Media, noted that broadcasts networks handed an unsettling 10 percent price-hike to advertisers last year for the privilege of airing commercials during their primetime shows even though DVRs and streaming have disrupted the way consumers get their entertainment at home, driving commercial ratings down.

The negotiations will begin in earnest at TV upfront presentations to advertisers this coming week, where folks like Campanelli will be looking for deals. Should networks hike prices again this year, advertisers could blow through their budgets pretty prematurely or find somewhere else to advertise.

How many years can advertisers pay 10 percent over 10 percent over 10 percent and just keep buying TV? Campanelli asked rhetorically, of course, because he had the answer. You re going to scare people away from the medium altogether, and it s not like there aren t big places to go spend your money in the digital world.

Campanelli may be playing a little chicken, hoping broadcasters will blink before advertisers do. But he s not wrong.

In case you haven t flipped your calendar over in a while, this is 2017, and there are options. Though television as your parents knew it still has what Campanelli qualified as a relative efficiency compared to other media, the gap is slimming.

And on digital the alternative that many of Horizon s clients are beginning to look at more closely there s less resistance to lowering prices. Digital networks have far more advertising hours available, since the Internet is endless. So they re still mostly just looking to grab more volume or overall dollars. That approach makes actual price-per-thousand impressions (CPM) less of an issue, and thus, more of a bargain.

Everybody loves a deal.

We ll find out in the coming months where pricing for 2017-2018 ends up, and where advertisers ad dollars go.

Here s the remaining TV upfronts calendar:
NBC: Monday, May 15 (morning)
Fox: Monday, May 15 (afternoon)
ESPN: Tuesday, May 16 (morning)
Univision: Tuesday, May 16 (late morning)

Katherine Heigl, Rob Lowe and 10 More Winners and Losers in New Fall TV Schedule (Photos)

Click through to see who won and who lost in TV’s biggest week.

Winner: Katherine Heigl

The star has had a rocky time since leaving “Grey’s Anatomy.” Her spy drama “State of Affairs” got canceled last year by NBC after just one season. But now CBS is ready to bring her back in the legal drama “Doubt.”

Loser: Kermit the Frog

It’s not easy bein’ a 1970s pop culture staple. ABC tried to freshen Kermit and “The Muppets” for a 21st century audience. But viewers just never came around.

Winner: Laverne Cox

With “Orange Is the New Black,” she was the first trans person ever nominated for an acting Emmy. Now she’s got the lead in Fox’s remake of “The Rocky Horror Picture Show.”

The former Brat Packer has remade himself as a middle-aged comedy star, thanks in large part to his scene-stealing on “Parks and Recreation.” But it didn’t work on Fox’s “The Grinder,” which was canceled despite great reviews.

Loser: Patricia Arquette

The former “Medium” star headlined CBS’ “CSI: Cyber,” which turned out to be a rare “CSI: Fail.” The forensics drama was canceled after just two seasons.

Winner: Jerrod Carmichael

The force behind NBC’s topical sitcom “The Carmichael Show” won a crucial renewal for a third season.

Loser: Connie Britton

The former “Friday Night Lights” star is a free agent again after ABC finally canceled her country-music soap “Nashville.”

Winner: Ken Jeong

There aren’t many shows more hated by the critics than “Dr. Ken,” the ABC sitcom based on Jeong’s own experiences as a doctor. But Jeong got the last laugh – and a season 2 renewal.

Loser: Bill Lawrence

Ouch. The “Scrubs” creator had not just one but two series canceled this month: CBS’ “Rush Hour” and NBC’s “Undateable.”

Winner: Kiefer Sutherland

The former “24” star has perhaps the most-talked-about new show of the year. In ABC’s thriller “Designated Survivor” he plays a Cabinet secretary suddenly vaulted into the White House after a terrorist attack.

Winner: Greg Berlanti

Now that “Supergirl” is moving to The CW, super-producer Berlanti will control 40 percent of the network’s programming.

Winner: Kevin James

“The King of Queens” is back. CBS has ordered a new sitcom with the oversize star, “Kevin Can Wait.”

Previous Slide Next Slide

It s been a memorable TV upfront week for Kevin James and Laverne Cox; maybe not so much for Connie Britton and Kermit the Frog

3 Ways to Get Cheap Cable Television #cable #tv #nyc #options

#

How to Get Cheap Cable Television

With all of the TV options available these days, it can be hard to find an affordable cable package that works for you. If you do not want hundreds of channels, but just want to get a few channels for a low price, you have come to the right place. This article will show you how to get the cheapest cable available in your area.

Steps Edit

Method One of Three:
Researching the Options Edit

Research the possible options. There are various options available to consumers, depending on what you’re after by way of basics, bundles and advanced uses. Knowing what options are out there can help steer your decision as to exactly what will meet your needs.

  • For example, in the United States, cable providers are required to offer a “basic cable option” that includes broadcast channels, local-access channels, and government and public-service channels. These packages are subject to government price control and are often available for under $20 per month. However, they are often not mentioned on the provider’s website. The next step up is “expanded basic” or “standard,” which costs more per month but offers a wider range of channels. These are generally shown as the cheapest package available on the provider’s site, even though a cheaper option exists.
  • Note that some providers may offer a small number of cable channels as part of their basic package.
  • Packages will vary depending on which country or region you’re living in. While it’s not possible to cover them in this short article, it is important that you read the fine print, as well as checking what your government communications agency sets out as the basic requirements for cable provision where you live. Your awareness of what is mandated by consumer or communications laws will help you ask the right questions to get the best deal.

Decide what level of coverage you want. If you want the cheapest possible package, you will certainly want to choose the “basic” package. If you want a larger number of channels for a relatively small monthly price, you may want to look into a “standard” package.

  • When choosing, be specific in the needs that you and your family or household has. For example, perhaps you all like sport but not arts, or you all like arts but not sport. It’s a no-brainer to go for the package that favors what everyone likes the most. It gets trickier when some of the household prefers sport, and some arts, etc. In this case, you’ll all need to reach compromises to keep down the costs.
  • Remember how many hours there are in a day. You can’t spend them all watching TV. Having access to many channels doesn’t necessarily equate to having the time spare to make use of the choice!
  • Don’t forget the possibility of borrowing, hiring or buying DVD sets from the library, video store or retailers for shows you like. If there is only one or two shows you like on some extra cost channels, it might be cheaper to forgo watching them now and wait for the DVD to come out instead. Or, watch the show online rather than purchasing extra channels you rarely watch.
  • Read the fine print on making changes to your package. If you sign up for 24 months to a set of kids’ channels and your kid turns teen and never watches them again for 18 months, be sure you can opt out of paying for those now-unwatched channels. Either that, or look ahead and don’t sign up for channels where householder interest may wane over time.

Tips Edit

Keep in mind that if you do not like any options, you can always call and ask for the basic package. In some cases, this may be the best way to start anyway, to see if you like what you get for the basic level or if it means you’re missing out. In many cases, you may simply decide that it’s sufficient for your needs and busy life, coupled with DVDs and online viewing, as you’re left with plenty of hours to do much more interesting things and not feel tied to watching TV because you’re paying so much for it!

    Comcast Free 30 day trial

Posted Wed February 20, 2002, by Gary H. written to Comcast Corporation

I am writing in the hope that you can help me address a problem I have with the experience at Comcast Corporation.

I called Comcast and asked what I would get if I upgraded to their digital service . I was told I d get 4 more HBO s, 4 more Showtime s and a load of other channels. I said, OK, how much will this cost me. I was told right now we have a 30 day free trial for digital basic upgrade . Cool, so if I don t like it I could call and that would be it. I asked if I needed to have a check ready when they delivered the box and remote to which I was told no, it was part of the free trial.
So, we try it out, we don t like it, two reasons: one, can t record one thing and watch another without purchasing a switch; and two, lots of lame channels no one watches anyway. And why buy a cable ready TV if I need to have this ugly box and remote for other cable.

Anyway, the bill come the next month and it has raised $30.00. I call and ask why, they say that was the installation and taxes . I bring up the free 30 day trial, their answer is that excludes installation. I call three more times before they finally come and get their box and remote. The guy leaves me a receipt which states: disconnect digital service, Promotional free . So I call again, the nice man says I should fax a copy of my bill, the receipt, and a letter explaining what happened and he would take care of it. I do so. We go to pay the bill and they say it is for $89, to which we say NO, this was to be taken care of. They say, Oh, I see the credit here now. And we paid the regular $61.91. We got this months bill today for $101. I call one more time.

She says she can remove the installation charge. I said what is this other fee for she says: a charge for downgrading your service . Plus $2.56 for a late fee for not paying the original installation fee.

Let me say again: This was a promotional FREE 30 day trial that they are trying to get an additional $30 from me.

Because of this, I can t say whether I will remain a customer in the future, and I can t in good conscience recommend you to others.

Here is my proposed resolution to this problem: Here s what I d like to see happen: Take the word free out of all of your advertisements. It s misleading and dishonest. Give me the refund for the $30 your going to make me pay. Clean it up guys, I m gonna be telling all my friends about this experience.

Thanks for listening to me. I ll be even more appreciative once I receive your response.

Satellite Dish TV – DIRECT TV VS DISH NETWORK Reviews #satellite #dish

    Satellite TV Review

When making your own satellite TV comparison you may feel a little overwhelmed with all the satellite TV lingo. Never mind the triple LNB’s for a moment. We’re going to attempt to clear things up a bit. We created this site for you to compare satellite TV and cable TV, without high pressured sales.

You can avoid spending countless hours researching the differences between DISH and DIRECTV. We’ve got all of the information you need and the best places possible to get your new satellite TV system right here.

    DISH vs DIRECTV

Both DISH and DIRECTV offer top notch services and are constantly trying to improve their product and image. DIRECTV for example, recently asked us to change any mispellings like DIRECT TV, DIRECTTV, DIRECTV.COM, www.directv.com and www.directtv.com. We’ve had similar requests in the past from DISH as well.

DISH and DIRECTV are very similar in pricing and channels. DIRECTV is priced slightly higher than DISH, but has a few programming options like NFL Sunday Ticket, that you can’t get with DISH and vice versa. Neither system is superior to the other, but the small differences that you will find in this site will make all the difference in your overall happiness with your new dish TV system. Look to the right and you will see eleven different DISH vs DIRECTV comparisons that will help you choose the dish satellite TV system that fits you best.

    Cable And Satellite

Comparing cable direct to satellite is not the easiest thing in the world. First of all we can’t get access to the channel selection for cable providers, but chances are you have had cable at some point and know what channels and benefits they offered. You will find that cable TV is much more expensive and has less channels. Another major factor to consider when comparing cable and satellite is customer satisfaction. For years now, DISH and DIRECTV have been the leaders in customer satisfaction according to the J.D. Power and Associates website. Actually most cable TV providers got really bad ratings from J.D. Power.

    Choosing A Satellite TV Retailer

By now you have probably gotten ten million advertisements in the mail and everywhere you look trying to sell you satellite TV service. There is no equipment to buy and you get almost the same perks with every single retailer out there.

So, how do you know which advertisement to go with when everyone from your local grocery store to your phone company is trying to sell you satellite TV service? It’s easy! Ask yourself these questions. Would you buy toilet tissue from a sandpaper company? Would you go the dollar store to get a part for your computer? So why would you get DISH or DIRECTV from your phone company or your local department store? When dealing with something as critical as satellite TV you want to get the best nationwide retailer you can find. The right satellite TV retailer will always have more perks, more experience and the best service. Hopefully, this comparison will help you choose the right system for you.

    In 1986, Shelley began playing the role of Jackie Shea on the TV show “Jack and Mike” co-starring Tom Mason and Tricia O’Neil. The show only lasted two seasons. However, while she was involved with the show “Jack and Mike”, Hack starred in productions such as “Troll” co-starring Michael Moriarty, Noah Hathaway, Phil Fondacaro, Anne Lockhart, June Lockhart, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus (1986); and “The Stepfather” co-starring Terry O’Quinn, Jill Schoelen, Stephen Shellen, and Anna Hagan (1987);

After “Jack and Mike”, Hack starred in “Bridesmaids” co-starring Sela Ward, Brooke Adams, Jack Coleman, and Stephanie Faracy (1989); “Blind Fear” co-starring Jack Langedijk, Kim Coates, and Ron Lea (1989); “Me, Myself and I” co-starring JoBeth Williams, George Segal and Don Calfa (1992); “Taking Back My Life: The Nancy Ziegenmeyer Story” co-starring Patricia Wettig, Stephen Lang, Gina Hecht, Eileen Brennan, Ellen Burstyn, and Joanna Cassidy (1992); “The Finishing Touch” co-starring Michael Nader, Arnold Vosloo, Art Evans, and Nancy Youngblut (1992); “Not in My Family” co-starring Joanna Kerns, Michael Brandon, Richard Gilliland, Dina Merrill, and Molly Orr (1993); “SeaQuest 2032” starring Roy Scheider, Jonathan Brandis, Don Franklin, Ted Raimi, and Stacy Haiduk (1993); “A Perry Mason Mystery: The Case of the Wicked Wives” co-starring Paul Sorvino, Barbara Hale, Maud Adams, William R. Moses, Kim Alexis, Kathy Ireland, Beverly Johnson, and Paula Marshall (1993); “L.A. Law” starring Corbin Bernsen, Jill Eikenberry, Alan Rachins, Blair Underwood, Susan Ruttan, Susan Dey, Jimmy Smits, and Harry Hamlin (1994); and “Tales from the Crypt” starring (1994).

Finishing out her on-screen career, Shelley Hack starred in “Falling from the Sky: Flight 174” with William Devane. Scott Hylands, Gwynyth Walsh, and Mariette Hartley (1995); “Frequent Flyer” Jack Wagner, Nicole Eggert, Joan Severance, and Kalen Mills (1996); “House Arrest” co-starring Jamie Lee Curtis, Kevin Pollak, Jennifer Love Hewitt, and Kyle Howard (1996); and “Diagnosis Murder” starring Dick Van Dyke, Barry Van Dyke and Victoria Rowell.

    Shelley Hack in 2008

In the 90s, Shelly began to take an active role in political fund-raising. She began performing extensive work in national, state and municipal election organization and registration – focusing on bringing women into the political process. She gained vast experience working with American political candidates and in the political process of the United States in her home state California.

In 1997, she formed Shelley Hack Media Consultancy (SHMC) a media consultancy firm that worked in pre- and post-conflict countries. It was a company that internationally specialized on projects that focused on the intersection between media and the development of civil society. She would go into war-torn countries and help them establish democracy through media, which was often done with the help of televised political debates. She started in Bosnia-Herzegovina and produced their first-ever televised presidential debates in 1997. She then produced other televised debates – in Sarajevo, Mostar and the two in Banja Luka. Then she became a registration and polling station supervisor in the 1997 Bosnia-Herzegovina elections.

For the next ten years, Shelley worked extensively in the Balkans and Western Asia. SHMC embarked on various projects including: the transition of the Bosnian State television to a public broadcaster; the development of ethnic balance within the Bosnian television sector; the production of television debates and public presentation training for politicians; and the Turkish-Armenian reconciliation through print and television. In 2006, the company became involved in strategic planning for the tender of a Balkan bank with a wide ranging portfolio of assets.

SHMC helped develop unbiased television, film, and associated media projects in war-torn and developing countries. Essentially, she helped develop television and film projects for foreign markets. And for two of those years, she helped the largest media conglomerate in Eastern Europe develop and build the latest film studio complex in the region.

I agree. After seeing the episodes with Shelly Hack, I say she was well appricated like a good bottle of the best wine well over time. I d say she truly came out on top in her final episodes particularly One love two angels where Kelly and Kris found themselves fighting over the same man who fell for both of them. It was up to Tiffany to save the day and she proved she could take command like bri would. It s a shame she was blamed for the shows downfall when it really was lame storylines and her chessy replacement that truly put the final nail in the coffin.

Shelley is one of the brightest, talented, kindest, giving, caring, honorable people I have ever had the distinct pleasure to know!
Her attributes are numerous, however, I personally know the tremendous contributions Shelley made in Reforming Media in Former Yugoslavia, which was a tremendous challenge at a minimum. Her dedication and sacrifice to reform in these war torn counties are admirable and selfless, to say the least!
She remains a priceless loving person, I am thankful and honored to call her my friend!

How to connect the TV to WIFI

Connecting the TV to a Wireless Network

To connect your television to your home network with a wireless connection, you need the following equipment:

    An Internet connection

    A wireless router

If wireless network security is enabled, your network security key

NOTE. Your TV has a built-in wireless adapter so no external wireless adapter is needed.

    Wireless Network Precautions

This TV supports the IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n communication protocols. Samsung recommends using IEEE 802.11n. Otherwise when you play video over a network connection, the video may not play smoothly.

To use a wireless network, the TV must be connected to a wireless router or modem. If the wireless router supports DHCP, the TV can use a DHCP or static IP address to connect to the wireless network.

Select a channel that is not currently in use for the wireless router. If the channel set for the wireless router is currently being used by another device, the result is usually interference and/or a communications failure.

Most wireless networks have an optional security system. To enable a wireless network’s security system, you need to create a security key using characters and numbers. This security key is then needed to connect to the wireless network.

    Network Security Protocols

The TV only supports the following wireless network security protocols and is unable to connect to non-certified wireless routers:

    Authentication Modes. WEP, WPAPSK, WPA2PSK

Encryption Types. WEP, TKIP, or AES

If the wireless router has been set to Pure High-throughput (Greenfield) 802.11n mode and the Encryption Type to WEP or TKIP, Samsung TVs will not support the connection in compliance with the new Wi-Fi certification specifications.

If the wireless router supports WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup), it is possible to connect to the network using PBC (Push Button Configuration) or a PIN (Personal Identification Number). WPS automatically configures the SSID and WPA key settings.

    Connecting the TV

    1. Press the MENU button on your remote.

    2. Use the navigational pad to select Network. and then click to enter the sub menu.

    3. Use the navigation pad to select Network Settings .

    4. Select the wireless network connection method. and the TV will automatically begin to search for wireless networks that are in range.

NOTE. If your SSID is not broadcast you can manually add your networks SSID by selecting Add Network .

    5. Select your wireless networks SSID from the list, and then click to connect.

NOTE :If your network is password protected you will need to enter your wireless networks password, when finished select Done and click to continue.

    6. The TV will attempt to connect to your network.

If successful OK will be highlighted, click to exit to the network menu.

NOTE. If you have high security on your network or need to setup your network information manually use the navigation pad to select IP Settings, switch to Manual, and make your needed adjustments.

    7. You will return to the Network Menu. Press EXIT to leave the menu.
