The recent release of Google s own version of Mobile Messenger includes all types of mobile communications while completely replacing Google Talk. Featuring video call supports along with others, Google Hangout app has an exception for AT T Samsung Galaxy S4 users. If you are an AT T user and want to use the app over cellular data, you will end up getting a message which asks you to connect to a WiFi network otherwise you cannot use the app.

According to AT T s official statement about the matter, the owners of Android devices who have installed the app after the purchase of the device can use it via both the cellular network and WiFi connectivity. However, if an app comes pre-installed on the device like Google Hangouts as it s replacing the G Talk then the customer can avail it via WiFi or has to be on the Mobile Share option from AT T. This way AT T is actually preventing some of the bandwidth being eaten up.

As an ecommerce platform, WooCommerce is more robust and has many more plugins at your disposal. Keep in mind that WooCommerce can be more challenging when it comes to customizing and coding requirements.

If you need to build an ecommerce site that is completely customized, I recommend a platform like nopCommerce. which is trusted by more than 27,000 store owners. If your business needs something extremely customized, a platform like Shopify or BigCommerce makes it difficult to complete these customizations. NopCommerce is a great option for those .NET developers.

My agency has helped guide countless entrepreneurs on their ecommerce journey. Here are some of the steps you need to take to get started on yours:

1. Start with a theme.

Your theme helps to reflect your identity throughout your site. Themes control your website s style, look and feel. Rather than paying a developer a lot of money to customize your entire site, you can simply choose a theme and have them add your products and images within the theme you choose.

Think of it like moving into a home. While you certainly don t have to build the home from scratch, there still is a lot of work involved to move all of your furniture into the home, decorate it, and make it livable. Each major platform will have a variety of different themes to choose from. Some are free and some can range close to $200 in cost. It all depends on your preference.

2. Choose a platform.

Shopify
If you are looking for a simple e-commerce website that won t require much housekeeping, but still has a classy design and great customer service, go with Shopify. According to e-commerce-platforms.com. Shopify is the most popular ecommerce platform. Shopify offers 20 templates that are free and about 120 more that you can pay for.

An upside to Shopify is that everything is hosted and supported by Shopify, so if you have any issues, there s one point-of-contact and no reaching out to another host or development company.

One of the downsides is that if you go with a free template, you could run into other online stores that look very similar to yours in terms of the overall look and feel. The paid versions of Shopify can help differentiate your online store a little better than the free versions. Another downside to Shopify is that you are redirected away from your domain name during the checkout process. Shopify also doesn t allow you to customize the checkout page — you are bound to what Shopify gives you, minus the logo and customized CSS changes. This could be a big disadvantage for many e-commerce store owners.

Even if you don t have development skills, you can finagle your way around Shopify to get your site up and running. Shopify s 24/7 support can also handle some of the technical details for you, but there will be a fee involved. There are ample plugins for Shopify, such as adding a color swatch if your product comes in multiple colors or a plug-in to integrate your storefront and ecommerce store with Square.

If you are looking for a hands-off approach where you can just sign up and have an ecommerce store launched in no time, Shopify is your best bet. Just be cautious if your store gets bigger and more customization is involved because you could be limited.

WooCommerce
WooCommerce is an open source e-commerce plugin for WordPress. The key takeaways from the prior sentence are WordPress, open source and plug-ins.

If there is something that you need to add onto your site that is more complex and requires customization, WooCommerce is going to be a better route. Open source means you can modify your store freely and there are no limitations. A closed platform, which is what Shopify is, means you can only modify your store to the extent that Shopify allows.As your business grows, often times, you need new features added onto your ecommerce website, and WooCommerce gives you this flexibility.

Let s say your ecommerce business heavily relies on key calendar dates for delivery, like Christmas and Valentine s Day. WooCommerce has a plugin that will allow you to add a calendar on the shipping page and select a specific date you want the package delivered. You may be limited with Shopify if you eventually want this feature added.

WooCommerce also offers thousands of different store designs through WordPress themes. You are less likely to run into the same exact design if you take the WooCommerce route. Many business owners are familiar with WordPress, which makes a seamless transition over to WooCommerce.

With WooCommerce, you also own and have complete control of your own data. Shopify controls your data since you are redirected away from your domain during the checkout process.

Ready, set, launch.

The biggest mistake we see is that business owners rush to tell a developer they want an ecommerce site built without listing out all of the requirements involved. Use these values as guidelines to assess network bandwidth. But remember to obtain specific requirements from your vendor, since bandwidth needs are typically affected by the choice of codec, compression and proprietary system capabilities.

Also, the video conferencing bandwidth requirements in this table are for the amount of traffic supported inside the Real-Time Transport Protocol (RTP ) packet payload. The actual bandwidth on the IP network — after adding RTP, User Datagram Protocol. IP and Ethernet headers — will be about 20% higher. So, 1 Mbps video conference calls actually use about 1.2 Mbps of network bandwidth. I refer to these values as transport bandwidth (1 Mbps) and network bandwidth (1.2 Mbps) to avoid confusion.

To determine the right resolution and frame rate for your company, make sure users experience the video conference calls in the actual context where they will be used, such as the desktop, mobile device or conference room. Additionally, users should experience the video calls with the screens or projectors you plan to use, so you can determine if the quality is sufficient.

If end users are not comfortable with the quality, they will quickly resort to other methods of communication, such as a phone call or travel. Between quality and cost, there’s a tradeoff. So, while users may prefer high-definition 1080p 60 fps, the cost of provisioning sufficient bandwidth to support conferences at that resolution and frame rate may be cost-prohibitive, especially in underserved parts of the world.

Estimating concurrent video conference calls

The next step is to determine how many concurrent calls each WAN link must support.

For small offices, with only one or two video conferencing systems and no desktop or mobile video conferencing, assume the two systems are running concurrently. For larger offices, estimate how many video conference calls occur concurrently based on your busiest meeting times. A helpful guide is to assume half of your conference rooms are being used, then adjust bandwidth needs based on actual usage.

If your organization has offices across multiple time zones, factor in time shifts. Map the call patterns onto the network topology and create a spreadsheet to track concurrent call assumptions and the bandwidth per call. A spreadsheet will allow you to modify parameters to create what-if scenarios.

Beware of the video conferencing bridge

The video conferencing bridge, or multipoint control unit (MCU ), is a bandwidth hotspot. All video conferencing endpoints in concurrent multipoint video calls connect directly to the bridge. Thus, the bridge needs to be in a location that supports a high-bandwidth connection.

Increasingly, organizations are looking to cloud-based virtual meeting rooms to support a growing number of conferences without making additional capital investments in MCUs. However, cloud-based MCU services will place additional demands on your network for internet bandwidth.

New video conferencing strategies often put the bridge in a data center because it looks and smells like a server. But the best place for the bridge may be in a colocation facility near the core of the WAN service provider’s network. Bandwidth is inexpensive at these locations, and since video conferencing call connections come from all parts of the WAN, the bridge would be in the right place to support many endpoints. This approach also scales well as video conferencing calls grow within the company.

Small companies normally just use the built-in MCU capability in some video conferencing endpoints. This approach works well for small conferences with two or three rooms, but it doesn’t scale.

Multiple remote rooms connecting to the MCU in a small office room system will quickly eat up bandwidth. Here, again, cloud-based MCU services are nifty, because multiparty room conferences simply require each location to connect to the internet.

Managing bandwidth with call admission control

The last step is to make sure your video conferencing has call admission control (CAC).

The communications manager or gatekeeper is programmed to understand the network topology and how many concurrent calls are allowed on each link. If a new video conference call would violate one of those constraints, the call is denied. This mechanism ensures video conference calls get the bandwidth they need and maintain high quality throughout the call.

CAC is especially important for organizations that make heavy use of desktop and mobile video conferencing over the wireless LAN. since these applications can overwhelm a network if used heavily.

    Salaries in the Video Game Industry

    One of the fastest growing job markets in the country right now is in the video game design industry. This industry is taking in over $7 billion dollars in revenue yearly. So every employer in this job field is looking for the brightest, most talented new recruits they can find, and they are willing to pay those who fit the bill a very good wage. There are many employers like Blizzard, EA, and Microsoft leading the way and according to a Game Makers Salary Survey this is what they are willing to pay.

    Video Game Programmers

    If you are a video game programmer. and it does not matter if you specialize in AI, networking or graphic engines, you will on the average, earn more then the other jobs in the industry. The starting salaries are down a little from previous years but that is only because many people have figured out that the video gaming industry is almost recession proof and many college graduates are flooding the industry. Here is what you can expect to make.

    Programmers and Engineers first entering the business or with less than three years experience, you can start off by making, on the average, $50,000 a year. If you have between three and six years experience you can plan to earn $66K a year and if you have six years and up on the job you can make over $88K a year.

    Lead programmers make a little more when they are coming in, but you will have more responsibilities. The entry level pay for a lead programmer is close to $56,000 a year. Once you have at least three years under your belt you should be averaging about $83K a year. Once you have been in the business for over six years you will make over $90K a year.

    Video game technical directors have a lot of responsibilities so they are paid well, even at the entry level. For those coming into the business or having less then three years in the industry you can average $60,700 a year. Once you get between three to six year you can begin to make $73K a year. Those who last in the business for over six years you can expect to make just around $110K each year, one of the highest salaries for this job description was reported at $195,500.

    Artist and Animators

    In 2006 a survey found that artist and animators were making more money then the previous years and that was at all levels of experience. The largest increases in salary were earned by those with more then three years of experience. Artists have many responsibilities like giving the game its’ look and feel. It seems at the entry level artist may be paid a little less but once you have the experience you can actually make more money then coders. We found that the highest salaried coder made less then the highest paid artist. If you are an artist here is what you can figure on making:

    A video game artist that is either just entering the business or has less then three years of experience can plan on making, on the average $41,500 a year. Once you have gained at least three years your earning will increase to $53,300. A game artist that can last in the business for over six years will make $66,700 a year.

    Video game animators will make on the average, $46,700 a year for three years of experience or less. There is quite an increase once you make it past the three year mark, you can now make $67,000 a year. Once you have six years of experience as a video game animator you can now earn just over $75K a year.

    If you are hired as a lead artist or animator you can expect a salary of just over $64K per year until you have at least three years of experience. Once you have over three years on the job you will begin to make around $67K. Once you have seniority on the job you can make anywhere from $80,000 to a whopping $215,000 a year.

    Video Game Designers

    When you were younger you probably told your parents that when you grew up you were going to make video games. They probably did not pay much attention to your comments at the time, but now you can actually make that dream job reality. The technical term for those who “make” video games is a game designer. The market for games designers is very competitive and it does not matter whether you are self-taught or are highly educated. The good thing is this position also pays well at all levels of experience. You will also find that the more proven you are in the industry the faster your salary will rise. Employers are looking for people that can withstand the rigors of the job. One of the best pieces of advice for a newbie is to get a mentor to work with.

    A video game designer with less then three years of experience will make, on the average $46K a year. With between three and six years experience a game designer can bring home $55,600 a year. Once you have over six years of on the job experience you can average almost $70K a year.

    If you are the creative director or lead designer you can bring home $45,000 a year until you have over three years of experience. Then you can start to average $54,000 a year. Lead designers or creative directors with over six years experience will make around $81K a year. The highest reported salary that we were able to find for a lead artist was $180,000 a year.

    Video Game Producers

    The video game producers manage every aspect involved in creating a video game. They are in charge of every decision being made from beginning to end. They coordinate all the different departments involved, and make sure that the deadlines are met and the project stays on budget. Becoming a video game producer takes a little time and one of the best places to start is in Quality Assurance.

    Producers. some times referred to as the project lead usually has a minimum of three years of experience in the industry so we have no figures on what someone who has less then three years experience would make. Once you have had at least three years on the job you can expect to bring home $62,000 on the average. With over six years of experience you will begin to make an average of $80,000 a year.

    Executive producers have been known to make, on the average, $50,000 a year. Once you have over six years of experience you can start to command a salary of almost $82K a year. Executive producers with over six years of experience will receive a six-figure salary. The highest salary we found was $200,000 a year.

    Video Game Quality Assurance

    If you are video game enthusiast but have no technical skills applying in the Quality Assurance department is a great way to get your foot in the door. If fact most producers once started in the QA department and work their way up the ladder

    Becoming a game testers is a dream job for most video game enthusiast and you can get paid to actually play the games. You can expect to make $32,000 on the average if you have less then three years of experience. You really do not begin to make significantly more money until you have over six years of experience and then you can make an average of $50,000 ay year.

    Any lead QA person can expect to make $40,000 a year until you have over three years of experience. You can then anticipate a salary of $50,000 for up to six years of experience. With more then six years of experience you will begin to make $60,000, on the average. If you are really good and can last in the business you can make a nice chunk of change, the highest report salary for a lead QA is $215,000.

    Video Game Audio

    This is a growing field in the gaming industry and the average salary has been increasing the past few years. This is especially true for entry-level musicians. Right now it does not matter if you a musician, audio engineer, composer, or a director once you have six or more years of experience you will keep pace with the programmer’s salary.

A sound designer or engineer will make, on the average $74,000 a year, once they have reached six years or more on the job.

    Musicians or composers in the video game design industry will generally have a starting salary of $55,000 a year until you have around three years of experience. Once you have been in the industry between three and six years you will begin making $62K a year. If you have the staying power you can make on the average $90,000 a year once you have over six years in the industry. The highest salary we have found for a musician is $215,000 a year.

    Making a substantial living is relatively easy in this field; all you need is a good education and a resilient attitude. The wages quoted above are the result of a survey and adequately reflect the average salaries for each position describe. As with any industry the more experience you have the more money you can make. Now you can tell your parents that “yes, in fact you can make a living playing video games.”

    Lotus Birth: Does Not Cutting The Umbilical Cord Benefit Baby?

    Is there a new trend sweeping the all-natural birthing community?

    It’s called a “lotus birth,” and it involves leaving the umbilical cord attached to your baby — rather than separating it at birth — and letting it fall off naturally, on its own schedule, if you will. That schedule can range from three to 10 days, depending on the humidity in the air. The placenta remains attached to the other end of the cord for that time frame, as well.

    The New York Post suggested earlier this week that the practice is becoming increasingly popular among women, and other news outlets promptly followed suit in declaring the lotus birth a full-on trend.

    Mary Ceallaigh, a midwife, made the case to the Post that leaving the umbilical cord attached to the baby longer is a healthier choice. “There’s no wound created at the umbilical site, which lessens the chance of infection,” Ceallaigh told the Post. “It allows a complete transfer of placental/cord blood into the baby at a time when the baby needs that nourishment the most. Not disrupting the baby’s blood volume at that time helps prevent future disease.”

    So should parents be jumping on the lotus birth bandwagon? Is there a even lotus birth bandwagon to jump on?

    Both of those issues are somewhat up for debate. Hilda Hutcherson, a professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Columbia University, told Yahoo! Shine, that there is no scientific evidence to suggest that leaving the umbilical cord attached would provide health benefits to the baby.

    There has been research in the past few years which found that when doctors delay clamping the cord for three minutes, the baby receives higher levels of iron which prevents anemia, but beyond that time frame, leaving the cord attached to the baby serves no purpose because it no longer feeds nutrients to the baby.

    Indeed, researchers at the University of South Florida found in 2010 that leaving the cord attached for a short amount of time after birth can be beneficial, especially for pre-term infants.

    Experts have also argued though that leaving the umbilical cord to fall off on its own is not without risk. The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (RCOG) released a statement outlining some concerns in 2008, after a small number of women in the United Kingdom started practicing lotus births.

    “If left for a period of time after the birth, there is a risk of infection in the placenta which can consequently spread to the baby,” Patrick O’Brien, an RCOG spokesperson, said at the time. “The placenta is particularly prone to infection as it contains blood. At the post-delivery stage, it has no circulation and is essentially dead tissue.”

    Regardless of the potential merits and drawbacks, leaving the cord attached is not new to the natural birthing world. As Sarah Buckley, an Australia physician who advocates for lotus births. points out on her website, a woman named Clair Lotus Day from California began to question cutting the cord back in the 1970s. “Her searching led her to an obstetrician who was sympathetic to her wishes and her son Trimurti was born in hospital and taken home with his cord uncut,” Buckley writes.

    As for whether more women in the U.S. are currently choosing to leave the cord attached these days? That’s hard to say. There doesn’t appear to be solid data available on how common the practice is. Ceallaigh, for one, told the Post that only 5 percent of her patients opt for a lotus birth — not exactly a sweeping trend.
