Top three Windows 7 system monitoring tools

Sometimes computer systems stop responding. At other times, they crash. Occasionally, computers may start up slowly or shut down unexpectedly, and applications or services are interrupted or terminated. The cause of system instability isn’t always immediately obvious, and you can be left guessing what the root causes were. In this tip, I’ll introduce three of the best Windows 7 system monitoring tools that Microsoft has to offer.

Monitoring Windows 7 system reliability

The Windows 7 Reliability Monitor (Figure 1) displays a running line graph of hardware and software problems on a customer’s system, as well as any changes made, such as system and application updates. To open the Reliability Monitor, type reli into the Start search box and then press Enter. You can also access the Reliability Monitor through the Action Center. To do this, go to the Maintenance category and then click the View reliability history link. Items tracked in the Reliability Monitor’s history include application and driver installs and removals, application and hardware failures and miscellaneous failures, such as improper shutdowns.

Each monitored day is rated with a stability index value from 1 (least stable) to 10 (most stable), and the stability index is derived from the number of failures over time. Each index value corresponds to a graph point displayed in the system stability chart of the Reliability Monitor, which you can view by day or week. The visuals include icons for each type of event that occurs, such as software changes and application hang-ups.

Let’s look at an example to see how the Reliability Monitor helps resolve computer problems. Over a period of time, Windows Explorer would occasionally stop responding and then crash. The problem seemed to occur whenever I had a lot of tabbed browser windows open. After reviewing my computer’s reliability history, I discovered that Windows Explorer stopped responding because of a defective audio driver tied to the taskbar notification area. The Reliability Monitor can also report on a range of conditions that may cause hardware-related and Windows boot failures.

Using System Information as a system monitoring tool

The Windows System Information utility displays detailed insights into a customer’s computer hardware resources, components and software. To get started, type system in the Start search box and select System Information from the results list. The System Information summary screen (Figure 2) displays the items that are installed on your customer’s system.

Expanding the categories in the left pane (Figure 3) displays many different types of values, from hardware conflicts and interrupt requests to system drivers and environment variables. Any of these can be used to help pinpoint system stability problems when correlated with other monitoring data. Even though System Information isn’t a Windows 7 system monitoring tool in the strictest sense, it does track system properties that can help identify relationships between system components and software — and their related problems.

If you expand the Software Environment branch, you’ll find items for system drivers, signed drivers, environment variables, running tasks, loaded modules, services, startup programs and Windows Error Reporting (among others). In this branch, you can identify whether drivers are in a running or stopped state; start modes (boot, manual, system or disabled); running tasks with associated process IDs, priority levels and start times; and programs that execute at system startup with associated path and user names. You can do the same for loaded modules, network connections and Windows 7 system services as well. This data can help solutions providers identify problem symptoms and even their causes.

Using Event Viewer for Windows 7 system monitoring

The Windows 7 Event Viewer (Figure 4) displays monitoring and troubleshooting information gleaned from application, system and security logs that correlate closely with information found in the Reliability Monitor. Unlike the summarized snapshot of events that the Reliability Monitor provides, Event Viewer lets you drill down into specific events for more information. To open Event Viewer, type event in the Start search box, then press the Enter key.

Under the Windows Logs branch, solutions providers can view information about application issues, security audits, setup, system events and forwarded events, all of which have error, information or warning icons. The Applications and Service Logs branch lists information related to individual programs and parameters, such as hardware-specific events, Internet Explorer issues and a variety of Microsoft Windows properties.

By piecing together the events related to system instability or interruption, solutions providers can identify problems and often determine the root cause. Event Viewer has lots of information to aid in such investigations. Additionally, Event Viewer lets you create reusable custom filters to narrow events, schedule automated responses to events through Windows 7 Task Scheduler or collect events from remote systems.

Ultimately, it’s your analysis and diagnosis that solves system problems, because Windows 7 system monitoring tools simply serve as viewfinders into activities and events. But these tools do provide the means for you to analyze Windows events as they occur and over time, so that you can determine the best solution to the problem.

Cannot Edit Permissions for Windows 8 Registry Key

Hello all, I have an odd issue with the registry in Windows 8. I’ve searched around quite a bit, and there’s a solution that keeps popping up everywhere, but it doesn’t work for me. Basically, I was trying to edit the FriendlyName of my wireless adapter, and so I discovered that there’s a registry key for it at:

So I found it, but alas, I don’t have the permission to edit it. So, I looked that up. It should be a simple fix, involving going to Permissions, Advanced, Add, adding a user, hitting ok a few times, and making sure to change the child object permissions. Not that I know everything about what I’m doing, but I have a good idea.

Yet when I follow these directions cited on many forums, I get the message, “Unable to save permission changes on. Access is denied”. This particular edit isn’t that big a deal, but I want to be able to enable editing of other things too. Any suggestions on why it won’t let me? Your help is greatly appreciated.

Better understanding of permissions in Windows, the ability to change other similar registry keys that are more important in the future, the possibility of helping someone else who has a more important key they need to change and the same problem with permissions. the list goes on. In our previous tutorial we explained to our readers how to enable Spotlight Feature in Windows 10. This is a new lock screen feature that displays some beautiful images from Bing.com and certain running Windows Apps. However, there seems to be no easy way to download and save the Windows Spotlight dynamic images and set them as your wallpaper or permanently as your Lock Screen. In Windows 10, the Wallpapers and Lock Screen images are stored in the C:\Windows\Web folder. But where are the Bing Spotlight images downloaded to? This post will answer this question and show you how to save the Spotlight Lock Screen images in Windows 10

Save Spotlight Lock Screen images

Open Windows File Explorer, switch to the ‘View’ tab and check the box adjacent to the title ‘Hidden Items ’ to force your Windows 10 OS to display all hidden files and folders.

Next, open up the ‘C’ drive (location where usually your OS is installed) and navigate to the following address:

In the Assets folder you will find a list of files. These files represent Windows Spotlight images downloaded from Bing.com. For viewing them, rename each file and use image formats such as .PNG or .JPG as extension.

Windows Script Host access is disabled on this machine

Windows Script Host or WSH, is a Microsoft technology that provides scripting abilities like batch files, but includes many more features. Such Scripts can be run directly from the desktop by double-clicking a script file, or from a command prompt. It can be run from either the protected-mode Windows-based host wscript.exe. or the real-mode command shell-based host cscript.exe .

Several HTML malware have been reported to use WSH objects as a result of which, those who do not require this feature, tend to disable it. But disabling WSH, will prevent users from running any scripts, including VBScript and JScript scripts, that rely on this technology and some software may require this feature to be enabled.

Enable, disable Windows Script Host

To enable or disable Windows Script Host, type regedit .exe in Run box and hit Enter to open the Registry Editor.

Navigate to the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows Script Host\Settings

Double Click on it and give it Value Data 1 to enable it.

  • A value of 1 will enable Windows Script Host
  • A value of 0 will disable Windows Script Host.

Click on OK and exit the Registry. If you don t see this entry, then you may need to create it, as it does not exist by default in Windows.

You will now, no longer receive the Windows Script Host access is disabled on this machine. In this way you can enable or disable Windows Script Host.

    Pressure Ratings: Design Pressure Ratings and Windspeeds

    Good discussion, I am going to offer a few comments on Design Pressure.

    DP ratings are established by testing the window to pressures equal to 1.5 times the DP requirement. In other words, if a window is rated to DP40, then it is actually tested to 60psf. If a window is rated to DP20, then it is tested to 30psf.

    One might assume that there is a direct linear correlation between DP rating and windspeed. One might also assume that a DP of 40 is twice as good as a DP of 20 – or that a DP of 80 must be twice as good as a 40 and four-times better than a 20.

    Actually, this isn’t the case in the real world.

    While a specific DP does equate to a specific windspeed, there isn’t a direct linear relationship between increases in windspeed and increases in design pressure. In other words, increasing the DP a certain amount does not result in an equal increase in the window’s ability to resist a specific windspeed or pressure.

    For example, a window with a lowly DP9 is actually rated for a 60mph wind and it is actually tested at 13.5psf which equates to a windspeed of about 72mph. A rating of DP9 is pretty darn low, but a 60mph wind can be a pretty significant gust.

    Imagine that we now look at a window rated to DP15. Sounds darn low and no one in their right mind would want a DP15? Well, 15psf actually equates to about an 80mph wind. Now, as mentioned, the window is actually tested to a level 1.5 times higher than the rating, which for a DP15 equals 22.5psf, and that equals an approximate 95mph windspeed. So while a 15DP doesn’t look like much, it really isn’t bad at all and it is probably acceptable for any application in the right environment.

    And btw, exceeding a window s DP rating does not mean that suddenly the window will explode or come crashing into your home killing everyone inside; it simply means that the performance values of the window are rated to a particular pressure. Can windows fail when subjected to windspeeds above the rating? Of course they can, but failure generally means cracked glass or warped frames or something similar and not necessarily catastrophic collapse. However, on the flip side, there are very good reasons why hurricane-prone regions are now mandating minimum DP requirements when building new construction or renovating.

    While back at the numbers a design pressure of 45psf actually equates to a windspeed of 135mph while a design pressure of 60psf by comparison equals a windspeed of 155mph and at the tested pressure of 90psf it is approximately 190mph. What you may now have noticed is that as the DP increases the percentage difference between design pressure and actual windspeed has decreased. In fact, you may also have already noticed that the ratios of the design pressures are the square of the ratios of the wind-speeds.

    So while 60psf equals four times 15psf, the equivalent windspeed difference has only doubled.

    My point being that while DP ratings can be very important, even crucial, in some environments, the idea that a person in an area that rarely or never experiences 100mph wind gusts is worried about the difference between a DP45 versus a DP60 is worrying over something that really isn t a significant factor in their situation window or door with a DP15 or DP20 can be every bit as good in the correct environment as a window or door with a DP80.

    Troubleshooting synchronization with Windows Azure Active Directory (WAAD) (Part 1)

    Introduction

    The Microsoft Azure solution allows synchronization of on-premises Active Directory with the Windows Azure Active Directory (WAAD), and that enables organizations to authenticate several services using WAAD, such as Office365, Exchange Online Protection (EOP), Lync Online, SharePoint online and so forth.

    The tool responsible for this synchronization process is the Directory Sync Configuration and the installation process is well-documented in the Office365 documentation, however we will work on some hints to guarantee that the installation is completed properly.

    The goal of this article series is to list some hints and tools to help exchange administrators troubleshoot Active Directory replication with WAAD. Most of the hints that we will show here are scattered on the Internet (a bunch of great tips here at MSExchange.org).

    The article series will start with hints during the installation of the directory synchronization tool, and some tools available for the exchange administrators.

    Installation process

    The goal of this article is not to provide a step by step guide of the tool, however there are a few steps worth mentioning to get things working and that will be our focus in this section.

    The first step is to get your trial account (go here) and as part of the process you will be assigned the first user name which will use the following format Name @ String-Related-to-yourDomain .onmicrosoft.com and after logging on to Office365 your first step is to activate the domain.

    After validating and activating the domain, the next step is to create an account to be the synchronization account in the cloud. Here are the steps that can be used to create such account:

    1. Logon on Office365 page (http://office365.com)
    2. Click on users and groups
    3. Click on +
    4. On the first page (Figure 01), make sure to fill out first name and second names for our future synchronization account. Let s use the domain that we validated in the previous step (in our Article will be Apatricio.info).

    1. On the Settings page, assign the role Global Administrator to the account (Figure 02) and as part of the process we must fill out the Alternate email address field, and then the Country.

    1. On the assign licenses page, do not assign any license and continue with the wizard to complete the creation of the new account using default values when appropriate.

    The last page will provide the temporary password. Log off the current session and log on using the new service account that we have just created. The first task will be resetting of the password. Make sure to use a strong password for this account.

    The next logical step is to enable the synchronization and download the tool (Figure 03). Both steps can be done by clicking users and groups, and then Set up located on the Active Directory Synchronization line. On the new page, click Activate at step 3, and download the Directory Sync Tool to the server that will be the responsible for synchronization.

    Before installing the tool, make sure that you install the .Net Framework 3.5 (includes .NET 2.0 and 3.0) which by the way will require the Windows Server media to be installed and .Net Framework 4.5. Both of them can be installed either from the Server Manager or PowerShell on Windows Server 2012 R2 server.

    It is not a requirement but during the troubleshooting process, we will need to check Active Directory users object attributes and for that reason my recommendation is to install the Active Directory tools in the same server running the Synchronization Tool. You can add them by running Add-WindowsFeature RSAT-ADDS from Windows PowerShell.

    Install the tool using the default values (we will have to provide our svc.sync credentials, administrator credentials and decide if we are going to use Hybrid Configuration and/or password synchronization).

    Getting to know the Tools available

    After installing the tool and running the Configuration Wizard, the next step is to make sure that everything is working properly and we have a couple of built-in tools to validate the replication process.

    Our first stop will be on the root folder of the tool which by default is located at C:\Program Files\Windows Azure Active Directory Sync (Figure 04). We have 2 (two) tools – the first one is ConfigWizard which can be used to reconfigure the synchronization settings using the same wizard when we ran the tool for the first time.

    In the same location, we have the dirsyncSetup.log file in case something goes South during the installation, using that file we can always check the log of the installation process.

    The second one is DirSyncConfigShell which will open a Windows PowerShell and from there we can run the Start-OnlineCoexistenceSync cmdlet which will trigger a synchronization with WAAD, as shown in Figure 05.

    It is pretty cool to force synchronization and we can always check on the Application of the Event Viewer what happened but from a troubleshooting perspective the most important thing is to see what is going on. If there are any issues then we should be able to pin point the issue, right?

    We can do that using the FIM (Forefront Identity Manager 2010 R2) client which is the piece of software responsible for the synchronization process. The tool is installed by default in the following location: C:\Program Files\Windows Azure Active Directory Sync\SYNCBUS\Synchronization Service\UIShell. To run it double click miisclient (Figure 06).

    For starters the main page of the tool will have the Operations area where all the tasks used during the synchronization cycles are listed (Figure 07) with their status. When selecting any given operation from that list we will have the details at the bottom (statistics and export errors) which will help the troubleshooting process.

    Another set of tools that helps in some tasks is the Windows Azure Active Directory Module for Windows PowerShell that allows administrators more flexibility to perform some activities that are not supported using the Office365 web console. In order to install these tools, Microsoft Online Services Sign-in Assistant must be installed and both utilities can be found at Microsoft/Office 365 website.     Following are seven ways to find the Uptime in Windows OS.

    1: By using the Task Manager

    In Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008, the Task Manager has been beefed up to show additional information about the system. One of these pieces of info is the server’s running time.

    1. Right-click on the Taskbar, and click Task Manager. You can also click CTRL + SHIFT + ESC to get to the Task Manager.
    2. In Task Manager, select the Performance tab.

    The statistics should tell you how long it’s been running, although in some cases this information is not as accurate as other methods.

    5: By Using the Event Viewer

    Probably the most accurate of them all, but it does require some clicking. It does not display an exact day or hour count since the last reboot, but it will display important information regarding why the computer was rebooted and when it did so. We need to look at Event ID 6005, which is an event that tells us that the computer has just finished booting, but you should be aware of the fact that there are virtually hundreds if not thousands of other event types that you could potentially learn from.

    Note: BTW, the 6006 Event ID is what tells us when the server has gone down, so if there’s much time difference between the 6006 and 6005 events, the server was down for a long time.

    Note: You can also open the Event Viewer by typing eventvwr.msc in the Run command, and you might as well use the shortcut found in the Administrative tools folder.

    1. Click on Event Viewer (Local) in the left navigation pane.
    2. In the middle pane, click on the Information event type, and scroll down till you see Event ID 6005. Double-click the 6005 Event ID, or right-click it and select View All Instances of This Event.

    Fire Damage

    We had fire on Monday, August 19th.

    The fire has destroyed and rendered our building unusable for business operation.

    We have temporarily relocated to three (3) building down the road.

    Emergency File System Check

    On Saturday, we had to perform an emergency server maintenance, and had to bring the server down.

    The maintenance included file system scan, which cannot be interrupted once started.

    This maintenance was required in order to prevent data loss.

    The scan was completed on Monday morning, and all operation has returned normal.

    This is the first maintainence we’ve done in three years of continuous server uptime.

    Thank you for your understanding and appolgize for the down time.

    Where are Windows Server 2008 client access licenses (CALs) required in a Hyper-V environment?

    With Microsoft products, a CAL is required to allow clients to connect to servers and make use of services. CALs come in many forms and those used to connect to Windows typically come in either per-user or per-device mode. Windows Server 2008 R2 CALs are not required for the host computer, that which runs Hyper-V services. CALs are, however, required for any virtual machines (VMs) that reside on top of that host.

    In terms of licensing, what is the difference between Hyper-V and Hyper-V Server?

    Hyper-V and Hyper-V Server have very similar names and look like very similar products at first glance. But these two products are very different in terms of licensing. Hyper-V is a role that can be added to an instance of the Windows Server 2008 R2 operating system (OS). You must have a functioning and licensed copy of the Windows Server 2008 R2 OS in order to use Hyper-V.

    You can download Hyper-V Server for free, and it’s a standalone product with no licensing requirements. Hyper-V Server is often confused with Hyper-V because Hyper-V Server arrives as a feature-restricted instance of Windows Server 2008 R2 Server Core Edition. That feature-restricted instance is intended to run Hyper-V services only (including add-on services such as host clustering).

    How many extra VM licenses do you get with each edition of Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2?

    With the release of Windows Server 2008 R2, Microsoft announced that each one running a physical OS instance can also run a number of virtual OS instances. The number of additional licenses gained depends on the OS edition. Windows Server 2008 Standard Edition adds rights to run one virtual OS instance. Windows Server 2008 Enterprise Edition adds rights to run four virtual OS instances. Windows Server 2008 Datacenter Edition has special rights that allow a running instance to run unlimited virtual instances. These licensing terms have not changed with the release of Windows Server 2008 R2.

    Windows Server 2008 R2 Datacenter Edition allows you to run unlimited virtual instances. Does that mean I should always use it?

    Not necessarily. Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard and Enterprise Editions are both licensed on a per-instance basis, which means that a powerful computer and a less-powerful computer can be licensed for the same cost. Windows Server 2008 R2 Datacenter Edition is licensed on a per-physical processor basis. This change means that servers with greater numbers of physical processors require a more expensive license.

    Recall that Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise Edition adds four virtual licenses to every physical license, while Datacenter Edition adds unlimited licenses. Recognize also that more concurrently running virtual machines will require more processors to ensure good performance. Thus, a tradeoff between concurrently-running VMs and physical processors is necessary in order to find the best answer. Microsoft provides two different Windows Server virtualization calculators that can assist in determining which license makes the best sense.

    Does Microsoft’s four additional running instances licensing clause with Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise Edition mean that those instances must run on the same server?

    I get asked this very important question all the time because many businesses are unknowingly violating Microsoft’s licensing terms. Rather than paraphrase Microsoft’s licensing terms, allow me to quote from Microsoft’s Windows Server 2008 R2 Licensing FAQ page :

    The rights to run the four instances are assigned to the licensed server, and all the instances can run only on the licensed server. You may not move your rights to run an additional two instances to another server. However, if you have another server that is licensed for Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise or Datacenter, you may move the two workloads to that server and run them on that server provided that by running the additional instances you do not exceed the licensed capacity of the new server (one with Windows Server Standard, four with Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise, and unlimited with Windows Server 2008 R2 Datacenter).

    Allow me to quote again from another question on the same FAQ page. This second answer deals with the situation where a company wants to run a fifth VM atop a physical host:

    With a license for Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise, you may run up to four instances of the software in virtual operating system environments. If you want to run a fifth instance in a virtual operating system environment, you must acquire and assign an additional license to that server. It may be more economical to license the server with Windows Server 2008 R2 Datacenter or ‘step up’ your Enterprise license to Windows Server 2008 R2 Datacenter.

    AVR ISP (STK200/300) parallel port interface

    The best way to perform AVR ISP programming. It works even in low voltage systems (3V). To select it choose AVR ISP I/O or AVR ISP API from the Options – Setup menu and the parallel checkbox.
    You can connect directly to the target system (ISP) through the 10 pin connector, alternatively you can connect a PonyProg adapter card for AVR, AT89S, SPI eeproms, microwire eeproms and feed external power to the device.
    AVR ISP API on Linux version need the parport, parport_pc and ppdev kernel modules.
    On Windows2000/XP you have to select AVR ISP I/O and use a standard PC LPT port.
    Note that this interface doesn’t support I CBus devices, use the SI-Prog or EasyI2CBus interface instead.

    There are many freeware Trivial File Transfer Protocol (TFTP) servers on the Internet which are able to perform maintenance activities on Cisco products, such as upgrades to Cisco IOS software on Cisco routers. This document provides tips on how to select and use a TFTP server.

    Service Pack 3 (SP3) is a collection of updates for the Windows 2000 operating system. You can apply this service pack easily while Windows 2000 is running. SP3 includes the updates contained in Service Packs 1 and 2.

    Note that during the installation, backup files are created automatically so that you can remove the service pack later if you want to, unless you specifically choose not to have these files generated. If you would prefer that backup files not be created, select the Do Not Archive Files option. You should back up these files so that you can remove the service pack in the future if you want. If hard disk space becomes a concern, you can always move these files to a shared network folder and delete them from your computer. For more information, see article 290728. Windows 2000 SP2 Installation Information, in the Microsoft Knowledge Base. Note that although this article was written for SP2, it applies to SP3 as well.

    If a previous software installation did not complete successfully, you should restart your computer before installing the service pack. Update.exe automatically detects any installations that are pending completion and blocks the installation of the service pack until the computer is restarted.

    If you have already installed Service Packs 1 and/or 2, you should install SP3 without uninstalling Service Packs 1 and/or 2.

    If you have not installed Service Packs 1 and/or 2, you only need to install SP3 to get all of the Windows 2000 updates.

    Mono has an implementation of ASP.NET 2.0, ASP.NET MVC and ASP.NET AJAX.

    Mono’s ASP.NET implementations supports two kinds of applications:

    • Web Forms (Web Applications infrastructure).
    • Web Services (the SOAP-based RPC system).

    Running ASP.NET applications

    To run your ASP.NET applications with Mono, you have three classes of options:

    • Apache hosting: use mod_mono. a module that allows Apache to serve ASP.NET applications.
    • FastCGI hosting: use the FastCGI hosting if you have a web server that supports the FastCGI protocol (for example Nginx ) for extending the server. You also may use a web server that only has support for CGI using cgi-fcgi .
    • XSP: this is a simple way to get started, a lightweight and simple webserver written in C#.

    For deploying applications, we recommend the use of the mod_mono or FastCGI approaches, as that will give you all the configuration options and flexibility that come with using Apache or a FastCGI server.

    For quickly getting started, get familiar with Mono and ASP.NET, XSP is the ideal solution. Keep in mind that XSP is a very limited server and is only useful to get acquainted with ASP.NET and Mono, it only support HTTP 1.0 and does not provide much extensibility or configuration.

    More advaned users can use the HttpListener and the ASP.NET hosting to create their own hosts for ASP.NET applications.

    ASP.NET hosting with Apache

    The mod_mono Apache module is used to run ASP.NET applications within the Apache web server.

    The mod_mono module runs within an Apache process and passes all the requests to ASP.NET applications to an external Mono process that actually hosts your ASP.NET applications. The external ASP.NET host is called “mod-mono-server” and is part of the XSP module.

    To use this, you must download and install the mod_mono and xsp components of Mono. mod_mono contains the actual Apache module, and xsp contains the actual ASP.NET hosting engine, both are available from our download page .

    ASP.NET hosting with Nginx

    Nginx is a high-performance HTTP server which support running ASP.NET and ASP.NET MVC web applications through FastCGI protocol. See the FastCGI Nginx page for details on installation and configuration.

    ASP.NET hosting with XSP

    XSP is a standalone web server written in C# that can be used to run your ASP.NET applications with minimal effort. XSP works under both the Mono and Microsoft runtimes. The code is available from our download page (look for XSP web server) or from the git repository (module name: xsp).

    The easiest way to start XSP is to run it from within the root directory of your application. It will serve requests on port 8080. Place additional assemblies in the bin directory. Other XSP options can be set on the command line, such as the application directory and the port to listen on.

    XSP comes with a set of pages, controls and web services that you can use to test the server and see what ASP.NET looks like.

    For example, once you install XSP, you can try some samples like this:

    XSP supports SSL and TLS Client Certificates. For further details about setting it up, see the UsingClientCertificatesWithXSP document.

    Additionally, you can configure Mono-specific ASP.NET settings (to have applications that behave differently depending on the operating system they are deployed in) using the ASP.NET Settings Mapping engine.

    Debugging

    By default xsp and xsp2 run in Release mode, which means that debugging line-number information will not be available in stack traces when errors occur.

    To obtain line numbers in stack traces you need to do two things:

    1. Enable Debug code generation in your page. 2. Run Mono with the –debug command line option.

    You must enable debug code generation in your page using the Debug=”true” in the top of your page, or setting the compilation flag in Web.config (compilation option ).

    Use the –debug command line option to Mono, this is done by setting the MONO_OPTIONS environment variable, like this:

    To do the same with the Apache mod_mono module, use the MonoDebug true directive in your apache configuration file.

    Supported Versions

    Mono supports ASP.NET 2.0, ASP.NET AJAX and a handful of 3.5 controls.

    Limitations

    Mono’s ASP.NET does not implement the following features:

    • Precompiled updatable web sites.
    • WebParts APIs.

    How to Install SQL Server 2012 Express Edition

    In this post I am going to show you how to install SQL Server 2012 Express Edition on Windows Server 2012. I have included screen shots of each step to make things easier to follow.

    These steps should be similar on other versions of Windows, however some prerequisites may be required on older versions of Windows.

    If you haven’t already downloaded SQL Server 2012 Express. you can get it from Microsoft here. I downloaded the Advanced version because it includes Management Studio, although you can download that separately.

    Step 1.
    To begin, launch the install program and choose the top option to install a new stand-alone installation.

    Step 2.
    Read and accept the license agreement and click next. At this point you can choose the features that you want to install. You can also change the install folder if you do not want to install to the default location.

    Click Next to continue.

    Step 3.
    Now you can configure the SQL instance. If this is the first instance of SQL Server on your computer, you probably want to change this setting to Default instance. If you already have another instance of SQL Server, you will want to use Named Instance and give it a name.

    Click Next to continue.

    Step 4.
    The next step is server configuration. From here you can change the Windows services associated with this instance of SQL Server. You can keep the defaults here unless you want to specify different user accounts for the services. You can also change the default collation settings if you are not in the United States.

    Click Next to continue.

    Step 5.
    Now we come to the Database Engine configuration. On the Server Configuration tab you can select whether SQL Server will only authenticate using Windows accounts or you can choose Mixed Mode which will allow Windows accounts and SQL accounts. I usually set this to mixed mode and set a password for the “sa” account. You can also add or remove accounts that will be SQL administrators.

    Step 6.
    On the Data Directories tab you can change the locations of various files that SQL will use. Depending on your server configuration and the load that will be put on SQL, you may want to put the database and log folders on separate drives. For most people, you can leave the default values.

    Click Next to continue.

    Step 7.
    The next step configures Reporting Services. Set this to Install Only if you don’t need reporting services or may need them in the future. You can always go back and configure it later.

    Click Next to continue.

    Step 8.
    On the Error Reporting step, you can choose whether or not you would like to send error reports to Microsoft to help them improve future releases of SQL server.

    Click Next to continue.

    At this point, SQL server will install on your computer. This could take a while to complete depending on the computer you are using.

    Once the installation has completed, you will receive a screen showing the details of what was completed and if there were any problems.

    How to Find Your Computer – s Uptime and Installation Date #windows

    My computer s been running for 100 days without a reboot! I haven t reinstalled Windows in five years! Geeks love to brag about this stuff. Here s how to find your uptime and installation date on Windows, Linux, and Mac.

    Uptime is a geeky term that refers to how long a system has been up and running without a shut down or restart. It s a bigger deal on servers than typical desktops.

    Windows Uptime

    Your Windows system s uptime is displayed in the Task Manager. Right-click the taskbar and select Task Manager or press Ctrl+Shift+Escape to open it.

    On Windows 8, click the Performance tab and look under Up time at the bottom of the window.

    On Windows 7 or Vista, you ll also find this information on then Performance tab look for Up time under System.

    Windows Installation Date

    You can find the date you installed Windows with the systeminfo command. First, open the Command Prompt press Windows Key + R, type cmd into the Run dialog, and press Enter. Type the following command into the Command Prompt window and press Enter (note that you must type Original with the capital letter on older versions of Windows).

    systeminfo | find /i Original

    If you are using Windows 7 or Vista you might need to use this line instead:

    systeminfo | find Original

    Linux Uptime

    Many Linux utilities display your uptime, from the top command to graphical system information utilities.

    There s also a dedicated uptime command to display this information. To see your uptime on Linux, open a terminal window, type the following command, and press Enter:

    Linux Installation Date

    There s no one standard way to see when you installed your Linux system. What you want to do is find a file that hasn t been modified since you installed Linux and see when it was created.

    For example, Ubuntu s installer creates log files at /var/log/installer when you install it. You can check when this directory was created to see when the Ubuntu system was installed. To do this, open a terminal window and run the following command:

    ls -ld /var/log/installer

    The time and date the folder was created is when you installed your Linux system.

    You might also try looking at the /lost+found folder, which is generally created when you install Linux and set up your drive. This should work on other Linux distributions. too:

    ls -ld /lost+found

    Mac OS X Uptime

    Your Mac system displays its uptime in the System Information window. Click the Apple menu icon on the bar at the top of your screen, hold down the Option key, and click System Information. Scroll down in the left pane, select Software, and look for Time since boot to see your Mac s uptime.

    You can also use the uptime command on a Mac, too. Press Command + Space, type Terminal. and press Enter to open a terminal window. Run the uptime command.

    Mac OS X Installation Date

    You should be able to find when your Mac OS X system was installed from its install.log file. First, open the Console application. Press Command + Space. type Console. and press Enter to open it. Expand the /var/log folder in the sidebar, scroll down, and click install.log in the list. Scroll up to the top of the install.log file and look at the oldest date there.

    If you ve been using your Mac for a while, there may be archived install.log files with the names install.log.0.gz, install.log.1.gz, and so on. Open the oldest one, which is the one that has the highest number in its name.

    This information is interesting, especially when you compare it with other people s computers. There s not much practical to be done with this information, of course it s mostly for bragging rights.

    Installing barcode fonts on Windows systems is pretty easy. If your installing from the zip archive, first download the archive. Then extract it (it is important to extract the files, not just view it in archive explorer.) Then:

    Windows XP:
    Go to control panel and open it. Then, find the fonts folder and double click on it. Finally, drag the fonts (files ending in .ttf) into the fonts folder.

    Windows Vista:
    After extracting the fonts, right click on each font and select “install” in the popup menu.

    On both systems it is very likely that you will not see the fonts until after you reboot.

    It can be quite a trick to install fonts on Windows machines. There are a few rules, though, that can allow an installer to install the free barcode fonts on both XP and Vista.

    1) User MUST have administrator access to install. Most install applications allow you to specify this as a requirement.

    2) The fonts should be installed in the Windows volume font folder, but this is NOT a requirement. The fonts can, in fact, be installed anywhere but the font folder is the preferred area for storage.

    This will get you through an XP install, but it’s not going to help you with Vista. In fact, Vista makes it difficult but it can be done reliably if you manually write the font into the registry. If you dont write the font into the registry Vista will not find it on it’s own, no matter what you do.

    The proper registry key for fonts is HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT \CurrentVersion\Fonts” You need to set the subkey to the font name and the subkey value to the path to the font. Any font stored in the fonts folder is considered local.

    For instance, If I were setting the value for a code128bwin.ttf font in the fonts folder, I would set the key to “Code128BWin” and the value to “code128bwin.ttf.” However, if the font were stored at c:\somefolder I would set the key to “Code128BWin” and the value to “c:\somefolder\code128bwin.ttf.”

    In any event, you should ensure the user is forced to restart before expecting the font to be available.
