A new book traces the changing face of locally influenced architecture across the globe and considers how it can contribute to a sustainable future

Habitat, is a beautifully produced book edited by Sandra Piesik, which considers how builders across the planet adapt to local conditions to produce a unique style of vernacular architecture influenced by their surroundings. The book illustrates how indigenous people and communities have learnt lessons over time and adapted to their environment while making the most of the materials at hand. This results in constantly changing styles of architecture which shift seamlessly as the locations change. This is all displayed with over 1,000 illustrations and a huge array of detailed maps, diagrams and essays as well as a detailed reference section. The book is organised into five climate zones; polar, temperate, tropical, desert and continental which brings together some surprising combinations of countries in far flung corners of the globe. Real Life Survival Game 3rd World Farmer

Rating. 7.8 / 10 – 22031 votes

3rd World Farmer is a serious-thought-provoking online game and business strategy simulation activity for high school teens and college students where you have to manage an impoverished farm in a dried out desert area of Sub-Saharan Africa. This is an exceptional survival role-playing game online, and gives you a striking, first-hand insight into extreme rural poverty, and the hardships and challenges faced by the millions of starving, struggling farmers and families of developing nations. In 3rd World Farmer, you have to make tough moral and survival decisions in order to provide for your underprivileged family, while enduring droughts, disease, poverty, corruption and war. How ethical will you be when you desperately need to pay your rapidly-ailing family’s food and medical bills? Will you accept virtual money to survive in return for storing chemical waste, and even housing terrorists?

The Deal: Your proactive mission is to help the head of the family turn this small farm in a developing nation into a commercial success. You must carefully budget and decide which crops to grow each year to sustain your family, and grow. There are several crops to choose from (corn, wheat, cotton and peanuts), and some prove more risky than others, providing potentially large earnings or huge losses. Make enough profit to invest in the necessary tools such as ploughs, harvesters and tractors to improve your crop yields. Increase your capital by investing wisely in essential buildings such as sheds, wells and barns. But remember, all investments have associated risks; wells can dry up, barns can be destroyed, and livestock may be stolen. Remember also Do not become too greedy! You must first prioritize your family’s health, or they may weaken, and be struck down by a deadly disease!

How to Play: Each year you must decide which crops to grow on your restricted budget. Use your computer mouse to select and buy crops, livestock, tools and buildings. Left click in the upper left corner of the game screen, and then drag and place the crops in your field. Left click your mouse again on a family member in the center of the screen to administer medicine and other options. When you have bought all your items for the season, click the “Right Arrow” in the top right corner of the screen to forward your circumstances one year in time. You then receive an annual report of how your farm has performed.

To succeed, you need to display good business acumen and strategic thinking skills to help ensure that your family, farm and community is safe and prosperous into the future. Carefully strategize and invest in “Communications” to coordinate sales with other farmers, “Infrastructure” for easier access to markets and “Crop Insurance” to give your family an income when your crops fail. Support a local “School” and “Clinic” for improved health and education services in your area. Donate to a local “Politician” who genuinely works for peace, health and prosperity for all. This will help benefit the long term well-being of the entire nation. When you have succeeded in purchasing the six above mentioned items, you win. Good luck with your new farming venture and survival challenge!

Discuss this interesting, thought-provoking game on the Learn4Good Games site with your friends, family and teacher! Whatever side of the fence or ocean you find yourself, you might take time to ponder how One world has a Third world.

Case Study: The World Business Forum (WBF)

Being held for the first time in Australia in May 2014, the World Business Forum offered business leaders the opportunity to hear influential minds and legendary CEOs discuss global issues and trends.

The Star Event Centre was selected to be the venue for the inaugural Australian conference, hosting the largest collection of senior executives for an event of its type. The impressive lineup of speakers included the former Director of Marketing of Facebook, Randi Zuckerberg, The Hon. John Howard and Professor Michael Porter of the Harvard Business School.

The Event Centre was at full capacity, set theatre style for the 1,750 attendees plus all four suites on level 5 were in action for VIPs and corporate sponsors. Breakout spaces in the foyer of the Event Centre and on Sky Terrace featured eight sponsor stands of varying sizes and food stations showcasing Australia’s freshest cuisine like QLD Spanner Crab meat and avocado brioche.

Speakers, VIPs and sponsors enjoyed a three course lunch in The Attic in the Event Centre, and at Bistro 80, whilst other guests ventured throughout the property to dine and hold meetings at signature restaurants including Balla. BLACK by ezard and Sokyo and in The Star’s own food court.

Volunteers from a hotel management school were recruited to direct guests internally and externally to the property assisting with traffic flow.

Aware that time is an executive’s most precious commodity, The Star meticulously planned the two-day event for all guests, from the speedy registration process onsite and clear signage, to the prompt catering at all tea breaks and flawless VIP management; a seamless and memorable experience was had by all.

In addition, custom menus were implemented across the property ensuring World Business Forum attendees’ lunch breaks were well timed and afternoon sessions could get underway on schedule.

Impressing all guests, Sydney put on an absolutely stunning couple of days of weather which allowed guests to utilise Sky Terrace for all morning and afternoon tea breaks, avoiding the need for well-established wet weather plans.

The 2014 conference offered accommodation across The Star’s two hotels to delegates. Responding to attendees’ desire to stay on site, for the 2015 conference, The Star has partnered with their client offering a discount code for accommodation at both The Darling and Astral Towers and Residences.

The 2014 World Business Forum was a major success, and has chosen to hold the 2015 conference at the same venue The Star for the second consecutive year, 27 – 28 May 2015.

The 2015 conference was another outstanding event that featured a stellar line up of speakers including Lynda Gratton, Professor at the London Business School, Steve Wozniak, the pioneer who co-founded Apple and Ben Bernanke, two-term Chairman of the Federal Reserve System.

The launch of the World Business Forum Sydney last year was a huge success with 2173 senior-level executives in attendance Australia s largest business management event.

The Star were instrumental in the planning and delivery of the Forum to ensure we exceeded expectations for both executives and sponsors. This was definitely achieved, as 100% of all executives surveyed mentioned that they would return again.

We look forward to working with the team at The Star again on the World Business Forum Sydney 2015 which will be held on 27th 28th May.

Doing Business 2016

Doing Business 2016: Measuring Regulatory Quality and Efficiency. a World Bank Group flagship publication, is the 13th in a series of annual reports measuring the regulations that enhance business activity and those that constrain it. Doing Business presents quantitative indicators on business regulations and the protection of property rights that can be compared across 189 economies—from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe—and over time.

Profiles 2016 Economy Profiles

2016 Regional Profiles

Featured Subnational Report

Doing Business in Spain 2015

This report measures business regulations and their enforcement across 17 autonomous communities and two autonomous cities in Spain. The report examines 5 areas as measured by Doing Business: starting a business, dealing with construction permits, getting electricity, registering property and trading across borders.

Featured Case Study

Measuring the cost of red tape

This note estimates the costs to firms from inefficient business regulations. Using the Doing Business data, we identify the time it takes in countries around the world for 6 major transactions regulated by governments: starting a business, transferring property, paying business taxes, exporting goods, importing goods and using courts to resolve a commercial dispute. Based on the data, we estimate that if the governments of 90 economies had applied best practice in regulating business entry in 2012, more than 45 million days of entrepreneurs time could have been saved.

Business Strategy

Business (or Strategic) management is the art, science, and craft of formulating, implementing and evaluating cross-functional decisions that will enable an organization to achieve its long-term objectives. It is the process of specifying the organization’s mission, vision and objectives, developing policies and plans, often in terms of projects and programs, which are designed to achieve these objectives, and then allocating resources to implement the policies and plans, projects and programs. Strategic management seeks to coordinate and integrate the activities of the various functional areas of a business in order to achieve long-term organizational objectives. A balanced scorecard is often used to evaluate the overall performance of the business and its progress towards objectives.

Strategic management is the highest level of managerial activity. Strategies are typically planned, crafted or guided by the Chief Executive Officer, approved or authorized by the Board of directors, and then implemented under the supervision of the organization’s top management team or senior executives. Strategic management provides overall direction to the enterprise and is closely related to the field of Organization Studies. In the field of business administration it is useful to talk about “strategic alignment” between the organization and its environment or “strategic consistency”. According to Arieu (2007), “there is strategic consistency when the actions of an organization are consistent with the expectations of management, and these in turn are with the market and the context.”

Before reading the rest, it is recommended that An Overview of Strategic Planning be read.

16 million color pen can match its ink to the shade of any real world object

Scribble is a pen that can scan the color of any object and immediately begin drawing in that color.

Images/Video:

ga(‘send’, ‘event’, ‘Entertainment’, ‘article’, ‘article-industry-impression’, );ga(‘send’, ‘event’, ‘Style Design’, ‘article’, ‘article-industry-impression’, );

While the 3Doodler has already enabled users to draw new objects into existence with just a pen and some 3D printing technology, translating the qualities of physical objects into digital materials is a bit more tricky. Scribble is a pen that can scan the color of any object and immediately begin drawing in that color.

The pen features two ends — one with a nib and one with a scanner. Users can press the scanner against any surface to capture its color, which is translated into a six-character hex code that stores its RGB value. The pen also features five refillable cartridges that are made up of cyan, yellow, magenta, black and white inks. When an object is scanned, the pen mixes the right amount of each ink to replicate its color and enable users to immediately draw in it. Alternatively, the pen can be connected to a device via Bluetooth or micro USB and the color can be used for digital work, while a stylus version of the device is also available for drawing tablets and touchscreens. Scribble s sensor can detect up to 16 million colors, and up to 100,000 scanned colors can be stored on the pen at any one time.

The pen is set to retail at USD 149.95 and the stylus at USD 79.95, with the team preparing a Kickstarter campaign in the near future. Are there other ways to bring digital capabilities into the physical world?

Orange County Amusement Park Injury Lawyer – Orange County Theme Park Accident

Theme Park Litigation

As residents of Southern California, our firm realizes that we are privileged to have some of the nation’s best theme parks at our disposal. Just like most people we have childhood memories of not being able to fall asleep the night before a family trip to the local theme park. It is no wonder that people flock to such parks in the pursuit of entertainment and the addicting adrenaline rush that makes adults act as if they were young again. However, does attendance at such parks or the willingness to ride a roller coaster give permission to such parks to inadequately maintain such rides?

Aitken * Aitken * Cohn has been involved in litigating two of the largest theme park cases that received nation-wide media coverage. In 1998 our firm represented a family in a wrongful death matter of a 34-year-old Microsoft Computer Programmer who was struck by a metal cleat which detached from a signature Disney ride “the Sailing Ship Columbia” in front of his wife and grandchildren. His wife was also struck by the metal cleat and she suffered severe facial injuries.

Aggressive investigation determined that the Columbia incident was caused by a variety of Disney failures. First, the Columbia Incident was caused by Disney’s failure to train its employees on the proper docking of the Columbia. Second, the Columbia was not properly maintained prior to the incident. Investigation established that the subject cleat was not properly secured and that “wood rot” also contributed to the incident. Third, expert witnesses contended that Disney used an improper rope to dock the Columbia. Authentic “hemp” rope was originally used; but hemp was replaced by nylon rope for economic reasons. Click here to see the verdict report in this matter.

The “Columbia” incident sparked a national debate over the safety of our theme parks. Particularly, in California, legislation was enacted specifically designed to ensure independent inspection of theme parks, such as Disneyland. That legislation provided mandatory inspection by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (“OSHA”). The Columbia incident also changed police response to accidents in Disneyland following the 4 ½ hour delay by the Anaheim Police to investigate the Columbia tragedy. The Anaheim Police Department has since placed a full time officer at Disneyland.

The new state law that resulted from the Columbia is now getting its first major test as workplace safety officials investigate two recent accidents. In one accident, two workers (represented by the Aitken * Aitken * Cohn) were seriously injured at Disney California Adventure while working on the Grand Californian Hotel. To see verdict reports click here. In another accident, a boy was seriously injured while riding the Roger Rabbit ride.

Recently our firm represented a family in a wrongful death matter of a 22-year old graphic designer who was killed on Big Thunder Mountain Railroad roller coaster at Disneyland, California. The young man was seated in the first car just behind the faux locomotive. Investigations conducted by OSHA and our experts revealed that the train derailed due to faulty maintenance. As the locomotive entered the last turn before the tunnel, the train’s wheels began falling apart. The derailed wheels slammed into the brakes attached to the floor. Upon impact the rear of the locomotive shot up and the nose down allowing the passenger case to be crushed under the rear of the locomotive.

Theme Park Injury Lawyer/Attorney

Theme park lawsuits can seem overwhelming since it involves numerous areas of laws such as premise liability, product liability and personal injury. It is our hope that we may use our experience and expertise in this area of law to help protect the rights of people injured at theme parks.

Aitken * Aitken * Cohn has successfully represented numerous victims of theme park accidents. The law firm has the compassion, resources and experience to consult the unfortunate victims of amusement park injury. Universities look into the future

The current funding crisis will transform Britain’s universities by 2020.

University campuses will be unrecognisable.

The conventional image of today, which is still fondly perpetuated in the media, is already as antiquated as college scarves and sherry with the tutor.

The 18-year-old school leaver, living on campus, studying full-time for a purely academic, three-year undergraduate degree is fast becoming a minority species.

The current financial squeeze, which is set to continue for the next decade, will accelerate a transformation that has begun in many universities.

Already more than one in three students studies part-time and one in six is from overseas.

The BBC News website is looking at the challenges facing higher education in the UK in a series of articles.

There will be more mature students, more studying part-time, more living in their own or their parents’ homes, and many more studying online.

There will be more tailor-made vocational courses, operated in partnership with individual companies and employers.

There will be more pick-and-mix degrees, with students accumulating course credits at different universities, even across different countries, and with gaps for employment in between.

Students will increasingly become consumers as we reach the tipping-point where their contribution to the cost of the degree is greater than that made by the government.

Private providers will take over an increasing share of the university market.

The all-round university will increasingly lose out to more specialised institutions.

Finally, universities will become more global.

A few may be allowed to go to the wall.

The most successful British universities will take in even more overseas students.

They will also run more courses based in other countries, either on their own foreign campuses or through partnerships with overseas providers.

Others, though, may start to lose out to the strong competition of overseas students from the US, Australia and, increasingly, from continental Europe.

With income from both overseas students and from government grants being squeezed, some universities will be forced to merge to survive.

A few may be allowed to go to the wall.

If some of this sounds far-fetched, then consider the facts.

The head of Universities UK, Professor Steve Smith, warns the sector faces an extraordinarily bumpy financial future .

‘Running on empty’

As he points out, the UK is cutting investment in universities just as other countries – the US, France, India and China – are spending more and expanding fast.

The latest modelling from the Institute for Fiscal Studies predicts there will be no more real terms increases in university funding in England before 2018.

That is a worse settlement than under Margaret Thatcher, when overall public spending on universities rose in real terms in every year bar one – though spending per student fell sharply.

According to a study by accountants Grant Thornton for Times Higher Education, one university in five was already in deficit by 2009, before the cuts began.

The average surplus held by universities is just 1.4% of total income. That is half the 3% recommended by the funding council.

In other words, much of the higher education system is already running on empty.

Consider too, that although universities are looking to other sources of income, they rely on the government for 60% of their income.

There is a long way to go before they can escape the problems of the national budget deficit.

So what are the prospects for universities? Many are holding out for the cap on student fees to be lifted.

But the independent review of student finance, led by Lord Browne, will not even report until the end of this year.

Whoever is in government by then, will need time to produce a response, to publish a White Paper, and eventually pass legislation.

If we have a hung parliament, the next government will be very wary of taking the unpopular move of raising tuition fees.

Is Congress finally going to take back its power to declare war?

#

The war in Afghanistan — the longest sustained military conflict in American history — could soon come to an end. So could any number of “humanitarian interventions,” “kinetic military actions,” “surgical strikes,” or any other euphemisms for war that the U.S. has relied upon for the past 16 years. And it could happen because one congresswoman who saw through the fog of fear and rage in the days after the 9/11 attacks — and presciently warned of the dangers of handing a blank check to the executive branch to wage war against an amorphous stateless enemy — was able to convince her colleagues that it was well past time for Congress to do its job with regard to sending our service men and women into battle.

Last week, Rep. Barbara Lee (D-Calif.) submitted an amendment into the House Appropriations Committee’s 2018 defense spending bill that would repeal the 2001 Authorization for Use of Military Force within 240 days of the bill’s enactment. The one-page act “applies with respect to each operation or other action that is being carried out pursuant to the Authorization for Use of Military Force initiated before such effective date.”

This means that authorization to continue the generation-long war in Afghanistan, the routine drone strikes in places like Pakistan and Yemen, and the global battlefield that includes anywhere al Qaeda or its offshoot ISIS have set up shop, would revert to Congress rather than the president.

Lee — who has previously proposed legislation to repeal the 2001 AUMF five times dating back to 2010 — introduced the amendment with no preceding hype but won over other members of the committee in short order, including Republicans and military veterans, with Rep. Tom Cole (R-Okla.) saying, “This is something where Congress has collectively avoided taking responsibility for years.” According to BuzzFeed . the amendment was passed via a voice vote “with a resounding chorus of ‘ayes,’ and only one or two ‘nays’,” which seemed to shock even Lee, who tweeted (in part) “Whoa” when announcing her amendment had been adopted.

President Trump is the third straight commander-in-chief to invoke the 2001 AUMF, most recently relying on it to justify strikes against government forces in Syria. Say what you will about the monstrous Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, but he had nothing to do with 9/11 and the group who perpetrated the worst terror attack on U.S. soil — al Qaeda — is one of Assad’s mortal enemies. Clearly, we’ve lost the narrative when we’ve become “al Qaeda’s air force ,” as some critics of U.S. military mission creep have put it.

Congressional Research Service wrote in a 2013 memo that the AUMF was “groundbreaking” because it “empowered the president to target non-state actors” and “did not specify with states and non-state actors were included.” As a result, the AUMF (which passed on Sept. 14, 2001 in the House by a vote of 420-1 and in the Senate 98-0, with Lee the lone dissenting vote) has been publicly relied on for at least 30 military actions, including in various countries Congress has not declared war upon, such as the Philippines, Georgia, Djibouti, Kenya, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Libya, and Somalia.

Only three days after 9/11, Lee defended her vote against the AUMF — for which she was widely pilloried as “anti-American” and a “supporter of America’s enemies” — as a plea to pause the march to war “just for a minute” so Congress could “think through the implications of our actions so that this does not spiral out of control.” With children born in 2001 eligible to join the military in less than two years, no reasonable person can look at the 2001 AUMF and assert that the “war on terrorism” has been won, nor does our current slate of foreign conflicts look anything like a direct military intervention against al Qaeda and the Taliban government of Afghanistan who harbored them. Rather, it looks more like what Lee feared: “a blank check to wage war anywhere, any time, for any length, by any president.”

The fact that Lee’s amendment calling for repeal of the AUMF was adopted does not mean it will pass, and it may not even be debated because of cross-committee procedural quarreling. Speaking to The Daily Beast, a spokesperson for the House Foreign Affairs Committee cited House rules stating “a provision changing existing law may not be reported in a general appropriation bill,” and added, “The Foreign Affairs Committee has sole jurisdiction over Authorizations for the Use of Military Force.”

Whether or not this amendment survives, it’s telling that so many in both parties and both houses of Congress have finally come around to see the danger in allowing for a “blank check” to use military force, as also demonstrated by a Senate draft resolution written by Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.) and Sen. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.) to repeal both the 2001 AUMF and 2002 AUMF against Iraq, which was discussed earlier this year.

Though Democrats tend to paint themselves as marginally less interventionist than Republicans, it was a shameful abdication of congressional duty that President Obama’s party never demanded he prove his case for war for his many interventions (including the disastrous Libya campaign) over eight years in office. To be sure, Republicans were barely more interested in taking a new vote over the use of military force, because if the mission succeeded, the credit would be Obama’s. If it failed, the GOP could blame Obama.

So why did Lee’s fellow committee members — including Republicans and hawkish Democrats — come over to her once unthinkably naïve and/or unpatriotic side?

Perhaps they fear that keeping the authority to wage unilateral war in the hands of President Trump isn’t the best idea. Perhaps they accept that 16 years of endless war against an ever-redefined enemy without so much as a fact-based debate on the floor of Congress is enough. Perhaps they simply recalled that war-making is constitutionally their job and it’s well past time they took ownership of such a critical role. But whatever the reason, good for them. It’s about time.

Our Mission

At Censport, we take the word custom seriously, and a look through our gallery is evidence of this. Each helmet is unique, radiating the personality of its owner. As all artists do, we employ certain signature elements to convey the Censport brand, but we work these elements into a design that is a collaborative effort between client and artist, resulting in a finished lid that displays the individuality of the wearer and is truly one-of-a-kind.

We do not shy away from cutting edge techniques or materials. At Censport, we continually strive for improvement and innovation and we welcome the ideas of the client as a helpful muse in the progression of our art. We don t just want you to love your helmet; we want it to be a part of you. And we expect it to blow you away every time you see it.

Censport is your One-Stop-Shop we re Authorized Dealers of:

Craftsmanship

Thousands of working hours dedicated to the pursuit of perfection.

Versatility

Our designs are planned around the use of unique materials — from in-house chroming to hand-applied engine turned goldleaf, we make your helmet come alive.

Balance

We take the time to ensure that the two dimensional design on paper transfers to the three dimensional helmet with accuracy and symmetry.

“I ve worked with Tyler since 2006, and he s the guy I use for all my helmet designs and paint work. When I saw my latest helmet for the first time, I was blown away — it s perfectly symmetrical on both sides, you can t feel any ridges. It s a fine art that s not something many people can do, and you can tell Tyler takes lot of pride in his work.”

Tom Milner Tudor Sportscar Series GTLM Class

“I waited long time before deciding on a paint signature for my helmet bc it was important to me. I had a complicated design in mind that incorporated several symbolic references. The outcome surpassed my high expectations both in terms of design and qualify of execution. I really think he is one of the most talented designers and painters in all of motorsports.”

John Houghtaling CCR FORZA Challenge

“I live in Southern California, so I couldn t go talk to Tyler about design in person, but the helmet still turned out exactly how I wanted — and even better. There are little details on the helmet that make me wonder how someone has that much patience to create. Tyler is easy to work with and the amount of time he puts into the design really shows in the final product.”

One idea for your adult birthday invitations is to make the invitations look like mock passports.

With this, guests can collect various stamps during the party.

Another birthday party invitation idea is to send pretend travel tickets.

A final idea is to make an invitation to look like a travel book or spin off of the book Around the World in 80 Days .

Easy Party Food, Decorations and Adult Games

Pick some favorite places that the honoree has visited to spotlight with your food, decorations and adult birthday party games.

If you need inspiration, check out our Around the World Party Ideas to get you started!

An easy idea for decorations is to use travel posters of fun and exotic locations that are either favorite destinations or dream destinations. If you have the budget, you could even blow up photos of the birthday person at those locations. A print/copy center can blow up photos to be poster size.

Great birthday celebration ideas include great decorations.

4Fun Parties Party Store has large “scene setters” that will make you feel you are in that exotic location. You’ll also find affordable travel themed party supplies, napkins, etc. that you can easily purchase.

Also, for other activities you might consider special elderly adult party games and activities that this age group will particularly enjoy. We’ve created this list of adult games that any age will enjoy and they are all very easy to do.

Printable Birthday Games are also always an easy option. Just print from your home computer and you have fun adult party games ready in minutes. If you have mixed ages, you can even select games that everyone will enjoy. How easy!

Not turning 80? Change the 80 in this 80th birthday party idea to whatever birthday you are celebrating! This theme can really work with any age (it just won’t match the book title!)

Regular Season: No Stats Available

Postseason: No Stats Available

Experience: No Stats Available

Career record: No Stats Available

Ron Rivera was named the fourth head coach in Carolina Panthers’ history on Jan. 11, 2011.

Rivera served as defensive coordinator for the San Diego Chargers’ top-ranked defense in 2010 and playing linebacker for the Chicago Bears’ top-ranked defense and Super Bowl XX championship team in 1985.

Rivera worked with the San Diego Chargers from 2007-10. He coached inside linebackers before taking over as the team’s defensive coordinator midway through the 2008 season.

With Rivera’s guidance, the pass defense steadied itself – intercepting nine passes and yielding 229.6 passing yards per game and 11 touchdown passes over the final eight games. Those numbers contrasted to the first half of the season when San Diego notched just seven picks and was victimized for 265.1 yards per game and 14 touchdowns through the air.

In Rivera’s first full season leading the defense in 2009, the Chargers ranked 16th in total defense and 11th against the pass. One of the unit’s strengths was playing tough after offensive turnovers, giving up only 44 points, a figure that tied New England for the second-fewest in the NFL.

Those rankings improved in 2010 as San Diego led the NFL with an average of 271.6 total yards allowed per game and gave up a league-low 177.8 passing yards per game. Overall, the Chargers finished in the top five in 11 different defensive statistical categories despite not having any defenders selected to the Pro Bowl.

From 2004-06, Rivera oversaw the Chicago Bears defense, engineering the unit to two top-five finishes in the league. Under Rivera’s direction, five different defensive players went to the Pro Bowl: linebacker Lance Briggs, safety Mike Brown, defensive tackle Tommie Harris, linebacker Brian Urlacher and cornerback Nathan Vasher.

In his first season as a defensive coordinator in 2004, Rivera presided over a defense that produced nine more takeaways and 17 more sacks than the previous year and scored a franchise record and NFC high six defensive touchdowns. The Bears also thrived on third down and buckled down inside their own 20-yard line, ranking first in the NFL in third-down efficiency (30.5%) and topping the NFC in red zone defense (42.6%).

The following year, Chicago continued to build on the foundation Rivera laid in 2004. The Bears won their first of two consecutive NFC North titles and stood second in the NFL in total defense. In surrendering the fewest points in the league, Rivera’s defense went 43 consecutive quarters without allowing more than seven points – the longest streak in the NFL since 1969. Chicago also led the NFL in red zone defense (32.5%) and rated second in third-down efficiency (31.9%).

During Rivera’s last season with the Bears in 2006, the defense paced the NFL with 44 takeaways and finished fifth in the league in total defense and third in scoring defense, helping propel Chicago to the NFC Championship and an appearance in Super Bowl XLI.

Prior to becoming a defensive coordinator, Rivera spent five seasons from 1999-2003 as the linebackers coach for the Philadelphia Eagles, who advanced to the NFC Championship game in each of his final three seasons.

Following his retirement from his playing career, Rivera went into broadcasting. He covered the Bears and college football as a television analyst for WGN and SportsChannel Chicago for four years from 1993-96.

Selected in the second round of the 1984 NFL Draft by Chicago, Rivera played all nine of his pro seasons with the Bears. Primarily an outside linebacker, he appeared in 149 games with 62 starts (including 12 postseason contests with six starts) and posted 392 tackles, 7.5 sacks, five forced fumbles, four fumble recoveries, nine interceptions and 15 passes defensed. Rivera was a member of six NFC Central division title teams and a Super Bowl XX championship team in 1985.

As a player, Rivera was known for both his skill and determination on the field and his dedication of time and energy to the community. As a result, he was named the Bears’ Man of the Year in 1988 and earned the club’s Ed Block Courage Award in 1989.

An All-American at the University of California, Rivera finished his career as the school’s all-time leader in sacks with 22 and tackles with 336. As a senior in 1983, he set the Bears’ single-season record for sacks with 13 and tackles for loss with 26.5.

Born Jan. 7, 1962 in Fort Ord, Calif. Rivera lived in Germany, Panama, Washington and Maryland before his family settled in Marina, Calif. He attended Seaside High School in Marina and was a three-sport star in football, basketball and baseball.

Real World Examples on Application of Integers

Introduction

What do golf, football, bankers, and the weather all have in common?

The following activity is a Guided Tour which is intended to answer this question. Its purpose is to guide the users through a series of activities that will familiarize them with integers, the rules and some real life applications. In doing so, the users begin their exploration of algebra by building a solid foundation in their understanding of integers and evaluating the significance of integers in their mathematical success.

Real Life Applications

  • Weather – Look at the U.S. cities that are listed beginning with Albuquerque. The two temperatures represent the high and low temps. of the day. Identify the city that has the largest change in temperature and the city that has the smallest change.
  • National Debt – As you read the site, pay close attention to the big red number. That is our national debt, which is a HUGE negative number! Write a number that increases the debt! Be careful.
  • Checkbook balancer – Scenario: You are a high school graduate who lives at home and works at McDonald’s making $5.50/hr. You work 40 hrs. a week and bring home about $165/wk and $660/month after taxes. Your expenses are rent:$150, car payment:$125, car insurance: $75, clothes:$105, food:$70, cell phone:$50, going-out(movies, etc.):$100, misc.(gas,etc.):$55. Calculate your expenses and determine whether or not you make enough to afford your life style. If not discuss, some options or areas of cut back needed to live off of your salary. Explain where you would cut back, the new amount you would spend and why you chose these areas. Remember, determine the difference between necessity and want. Be realistic because you can’t live with momma forever!

    #cool business cards

    #

Whether it’s our translucent plastic cards. our laser cut wooden cards. our etched metal cards or our handcrafted letterpress cards. we strive for the exceptional.

We believe that your business card should be as unique as the person handing it out.

    No artwork? No problem.

We provide an entirely free design service to customers who don’t already have print-ready artwork. Once we have collected a few pieces of information, our design team puts together an initial concept and first draft. We then generate a photo-realistic digital mockup using our innovative proofing system. This shows exactly how the card would look once produced. Then, using your feedback, we make revisions until you are 100% happy with the layout. To request your design just click ‘get started ‘. You’ll be presented with a form that collects the information we need. You’ll also be able to upload an existing logo. We’ll then send you a digital proof.

    Completely Bespoke

No two people or businesses are alike. We’ve created artwork for tens of thousands of customers and never come across two organisations whose requirements are identical. We don’t believe in templates or cookie cutter solutions. Instead, we firmly believe that the development of the artwork should be a collaborative, creative process that is given the time and attention it deserves. It’s the only way to make sure that the business card is as unique as the person handing it out.

    Innovative Proofs

Customers need an understanding of how the final product will look and feel before placing an order yet the cost of tooling makes it impractical to manufacture physical proofs. We’ve solved this dilemma by developing an advanced digital proofing system. This enables us to generate digital proofs showing exactly how the card will look once produced. Coupled with our ability to provide free samples of previously manufactured cards, the customer can accurately assess the design and quality of their card before placing their order.

    Multiple Revisions

We love to design. We think we’re pretty good. But we are not naïve enough to think that the first design we send you will be a winner. There will be elements you like and some you don’t. Every customer has different tastes and priorities. So we don’t place an arbitrary limit on the number of revisions we’re prepared to undertake. Instead, we work with you, using your feedback to patiently revise and alter the artwork, moving the project forward until you are 100% happy with the way it looks.

Below is a selection of our favourite cards from the last seven days, each the result of the free design service offered to every customer.

Founded in 2007, our nucleus is a small, dedicated team of designers and craftsmen. T ogether we produce the worlds most innovative business cards.

We are renowned for our metal. plastic. wood and letterpress business cards and for providing a free, bespoke design service available to every customer who doesn’t already have print-ready artwork. We combine cutting edge design and workflows with traditional artisan manufacturing techniques, helping to preserve crafts that would otherwise fall by the wayside in our increasingly automated and impersonal world. And while it’s true that we ship to 129 countries. we firmly believe in supporting our community by employing locally and manufacturing all of our products here in the United Kingdom.

    GRAPHIC Designers

At our core we’re designers. Our company is built around the belief that an effective business card has to be as unique as the person handing it out. Our dedicated graphics team has years of experience, designing bespoke, original business card designs using innovative materials.

    Artisan Printers

Sometimes the old ways truly are the best ways. The handcrafted nature of our production process enables us to reproduce artwork that wouldn’t otherwise be possible. This dedication to traditional techniques cultivates a level of ownership and pride that’s simply not possible when production is heavily automated.

16 million color pen can match its ink to the shade of any real world object

Scribble is a pen that can scan the color of any object and immediately begin drawing in that color.

    Images/Video:

The World Class Manufacturing programme at Chrysler, Fiat – Co #world #class

    #

The company-specific production system (XPS ) of Chrysler is the World Class Manufacturing (WCM) concept, developed by the Fiat Group in 2006. But, what exactly is the WCM? And, what does Chrysler see as keys to success in WCM?

A few answers are given these days at the 4th annual Lean Management Journal Conference in Birmingham, UK: in his morning keynote, Mauro Pino—Vice President for vehicle assembly operations and the Head of World Class Manufacturing in the Chrysler Group—explains how Chrysler achieves manufacturing excellence across the globe . Pino stresses that WCM is how we do our business. Period. The presentation reminds me of the WCM factories I visited in Brazil, Spain and Sweden last year, all of which confirmed that WCM can be a powerful improvement system—if implemented seriously. Let s take a closer look at the concept of WCM.

The development of World Class Manufacturing

WCM was developed by Fiat and partnering firms in 2005. Hajime Yamashina, Professor Emeritus at Kyoto Universality in Japan, played a key role. (Note that the WCM concept of Fiat is not identical to Richard Schonberger s famous book from 1986 with the same name). From the outset, all Fiat-group companies took part in the new journey towards operational excellence. Consequently, WCM was launched in Fiat s automobile and powertrain divisions, in Maserati, in Lancia, in Alfa Romeo, and so on. The Fiat-owned companies CNH (manufacturer of Case agricultural equipment and New Holland tractors) and the truck- and engine manufacturer Iveco also use WCM as their XPS. In fact, today, companies as varied as the Royal Mail, Ariston (manufacturer of white goods), Unilever (consumer goods), Atlas Copco (industrial tools), Barilla (pasta) and 12 different transportation companies reportedly use the WCM concept.

The Chrysler Group joined the WCM when Fiat acquired majority shares in 2009 (as a consequence of the financial crisis driving Chrysler to bankruptcy). Today, Chrysler is known as the Comeback Kid. The incredible transformation is partly credited the WCM as a change programme. A stronghold of choosing WCM as an off-the-shelf XPS is that companies that join, get the benefit of a world class benchmark from the other participating companies. Today, 166 manufacturing plants in 16 countries are active partners in the worldwide WCM Association. 30 of these are Chrysler plants, whereas 45 belong to Fiat.

The content of World Class Manufacturing

The WCM system is made up of ten technical- and ten managerial pillars, illustrated as a temple (see below). The ten technical pillars are as follows:

    1) Safety (Occupational safety)
    2) Cost Deployment (Distribution of Costs)
    3) Focused Improvement
    4a) Autonomous Maintenance
    4b) Workplace Organization
    5) Professional maintenance
    6) Quality Control
    7) Logistics Customer Service
    8) Early equipment Management
    9) People Development
    10) Environment (and Energy)

And the ten managerial pillars are:
    1) Management Commitment
    2) Clarity of Objectives
    3) Route map to WCM
    4) Allocation of Highly Qualified People to Model Areas
    5) Commitment of the Organization
    6) Competence of Organization towards Improvement
    7) Time and Budget
    8) Level of Detail
    9) Level of Expansion
    10) Motivation of Operators

Key characteristics of the World Class Manufacturing concept

The Cost Deployment pillar is of particular interest because it differs from the typical XPS (see this post to learn what is typical ). Cost Deployment is a seven-step accounting technique for assigning actual costs to each loss and waste that happens in a factory. This way, the prioritization of which loss to attack first can be made with economical reasoning. An additional advantage of Cost Deployment is that all improvement work in the organization is assigned an equivalent saving potential. This motivates further improvements, and is the best argument for convincing remaining skeptics and cynics. To do proper Cost Deployment you need to team up persons from accounting, finance and operations.

Another key characteristic of the WCM concept, is that change always starts with a model area . The model areas are pilots for the implementation of the principles. For example, the plant typically chooses the worst performing machine as a model machine for the Autonomous Maintenance pillar. Through a dedicated project, using WCM tools and techniques, this model machine is brought back to basic condition and made the best performing machine in the plant. The learning points and good practices are thereafter shared with the rest of the plant. This is however a challenging way to implement an XPS; you risk making islands of excellence that do little good for the overall performance of the plant. I guess that s where cost deployment comes in again and ensures that practices are spread.

A third interesting notion in WCM, is the concept of zero . A manager in Brazil explained me: You can t discuss with zero; once you suggest another target, you ll get into all kinds of unfruitful discussions . The target of WCM is zero waste, zero defects, zero breakdowns and zero inventory. The model areas should prove achievement of zero for several weeks before solutions are spread.

For Chrysler, the latest WCM strategy is a strong focus on education . For that purpose Chrysler has built a World Class Manufacturing Academy (WCMA) in Warren, Michigan. The WCMA is a state-of-the-art training centre for all employees in Chrysler, making use of modern technology and the latest knowledge on practical training. Because 70 % of Chrysler s work force work in fair proximity to the Academy, many plants can afford sending their employees to training in Warren. The idea is that the plants should use Cost Deployment to identify areas of improvements, and then send employees for specific training in needed tools and techniques—not just general training.

WCM is not a static never-changing improvement programme. In 2010, an Energy sub-pillar was introduced in the Environment pillar to improve the ability to identify and implement measures to reduce waste and achieve greater energy efficiency . Obviously, a production improvement programme can also contribute to greater good!

    Enmu

I don’t know anything about MSU but I used to live near the Portales, NM main campus of ENMU. You cannot imagine how different the area is from the usual conception of New Mexico. Flat, dry, agricultural and Baptist. Very Baptist. Very, very mild chile sauce. They even sometimes put TOMATOES in it. No wonder we call the area Little Texas !

But ENMU is a good school and those folks know what they are about. If you do decide to go with them, you will not regret it.

The MSU is on my radar as well. I am looking for an AACSB for the lest amount of tuition, as I am coming out of my own pocket.
U of Louisiana – Monroe has an AACSB MBA program that is 30 credits (with a lot of prereq’s which you cant CLEP and DANTES), and will be under 15k. I am CLEPing Principles of Management and Principles of Marketing the first week of January in case I decide on this one, and studying for the GMAT in March.
The U of Nevada – Reno EMBA program is AACSB, and has a cohort program that has a high grad rate, at 24k. Since I live in NV, it has been on the top of my list as well.
Also considering U of North Dakota MBA. and could possibly end up in the UNLV EMBA program since it is local.
I guess I am looking for some sort of name recognition as well, or at least a state one part of a state University system. This is all a tough package to find at a discounted rate. I just do not see the ROI on spending more than 30k for an MBA. with so many of them being turned out by so many schools these days.
At least I have it more narrowed down than a few months ago.

The World s Coolest Business Card Holder

Business card holders – who really puts a lot of thought into these? Well, people who work in offices certainly do. Patrick Bateman most certainly does. If you are in a sales capacity, I can’t imagine you not keeping a few business cards always at the ready. There are even professions that are essentially a part of sales that some employees don’t know. If you are in a customer facing position, or are adept at speaking persuasively to strangers you meet at the grocery store about the product or service your company provides, you are in sales! So that means that even you need to start carrying some business cards.

If you are going to carry business cards, you will need a good place to keep them. A wallet is not adequate for carrying a large number of business cards, not to mention that wallets are often very hard on whatever is placed within them. Your beautiful business cards will have folded corners, lint, and ink smudges pretty soon. Business card boxes are the way to go.

There are tons of styles to consider when buying a business card holder for men or women. The Best Wallet 2015 website has a great updated list for some of the world’s coolest business card holders. The styles range from soft to hard, leather to metal, and all are sleek and stylish in their own way. We are biased, but we think the Smart Armor Safe would make the best business card holder for men. It’s tough enough to protect your business cards, and opens up via Bluetooth for a cool and dramatic presentation!

So, have you checked the business card holder list? http://bestwallet2015.com/beautiful-best-business-card-holder-for-men/

    What – s the iPhone – s future? Think IBM – s

    #

What’s the iPhone’s future? Think IBM’s Selectric typewriter

The success of IBM s Selectric typewriter helped finance other innovations at the company, notably the personal computer..

OPINION: For the iPhone’s 10th anniversary, Apple is planning to release new and upgraded models later this year, with updated designs, improved cameras and better screens.

But a more important product launch actually began in mid-March, when the company quietly reintroduced the discontinued, two-and-a-half-year-old iPhone 6 in several Asian countries and Eastern Europe.

That might sound dull. But for Apple, which is banking on the developing world for growth, it’s actually a far-sighted move.

The company is acknowledging that smartphones have transitioned from elite niche products into mature technologies, owned by everyone and upgraded infrequently. And that means that boring reliability – not innovation – will define the iPhone’s future.

By now, most consumers know what they want from a smartphone (social media, text messaging, and so on). And better screens and cameras will only persuade so many to splurge on new models.

That’s especially true in emerging markets. In Kenya, users cite social media as the primary reason for upgrading from a feature phone, and used smartphones – which go for as little as $40 – work just fine for accessing Facebook.

True, the cheaper phones won’t look as good. But they do everything that late smartphone adopters want, and that’s good enough.

“Good enough” doesn’t sound great for Apple and other phone makers, which prosper off the relentless upgrade cycle.

But many well-known products have followed the same path, from ground-breaking innovation to reliable, profitable, “good enough” staples.

The KitchenAid Model K mixer revolutionised American kitchens when it was introduced in 1937, but has since changed only incrementally as it became a wedding-registry juggernaut. Maytag washing machines, Aermotor windmills, the Ford Model T, and the Browning M1911 pistol have gone much the same route.

Perhaps the product that most closely approximates the iPhone’s future is the venerable Selectric typewriter, from International Business Machines.

When IBM introduced the device in 1961, electric typewriters had already been around for decades. But the Selectric upended the business by enabling faster typing and the changing of fonts, thereby boosting productivity worldwide.

The technology also came packaged in a sleek, minimalist case quickly recognised as a landmark in industrial design.

Sales exceeded forecasts from day one, and eventually the Selectric captured as much as 75 per cent of the US typewriter market, as millions of office managers recognised that it provided exactly what they needed.

But a device so perfectly suited to its customers’ demands didn’t need much in the way of upgrades, and IBM had trouble extending the line.

The Selectric II, introduced in 1971, allowed users to change the number of characters typed per inch – helpful, but hardly essential to most office tasks.

A third model was introduced at the dawn of the PC era, but by then, increased competition and changing consumer demands meant the Selectric’s days were numbered, and the line was discontinued in 1986.

Yet it was hardly a failure. Its decades-long success helped finance other innovations at IBM, notably the personal computer.

In principle, the iPhone is becoming something similar: a tried-and-true model that simply matches customer needs.

In Malaysia, where I live, one authorised reseller is promoting the iPhone 6 with a big red sign that promises “Amazing Phone, Amazing Price,” with no reference to the model name or vintage. A clerk told me that the phone is selling well, especially to younger customers who can’t afford a newer model but appreciate the iPhone’s reliability compared to most Android phones.

Although not flashy, this approach should remain profitable for Apple for some time, and help pay the bills as it transitions to the next big thing.

It may sting Apple’s executives to learn that their iconic invention is evolving into the digital era’s equivalent of a typewriter or washing machine.

But in recent years, Apple has pushed hard to expand its services and content business, and more iPhones – no matter how old – help meet that goal.

If marketed well, the durability of the company’s older, duller phones could become an asset.

Meanwhile, if Apple wants to maintain its reputation as an innovator, it should acknowledge the iPhone as the mature product it has become, and redirect its vaunted creative energy to something new.
